Book Description
Ahead Software's Nero program is the most popular CD and DVD burning software in the world. While it seems like it should be easy to burn CDs and DVDs, doing so can be much more complicated than it appears, and many users reach high frustration levels after burning multiple coasters that don't work.
This simple, task-oriented, step-by-step book covers the entire Nero program suite, including audio CD burning, data backup, managing photos, DVD video burning, designing CD/DVD labels, editing sound, creating a virtual drive and CD/DVD data disk, and playing audio and video. This updated revision to the bestseller (nearly 20,000 copies sold), has been completely rewritten to focus on the tasks that most people perform with Nero 7.
Customer Reviews:
States the obvious on usage of an inferior product.......2007-07-05
If you have no clue on how to use Nero, and somehow managed to get it cleanly installed (in itself not a fun process) then this book will re-state the obvious. All in all, given the horror of trying to install Nero 7, if you might have benefited from this book, you'll never get far enough on the software install to make the book worth buying.
One star or less.......2007-05-22
If you're an absolute newbe, this is probably a good book for you.
If you have any experience at all, pass on this one.
OK for a beginner.......2007-05-12
This book is pretty basic, but gives you the information you need to get started. If you need anything more than the basics, then best to download and print the voluminous manuals available at the Nero website.
Learner.......2007-01-31
This publication is one of the best that I have ever tried to work from. The author is vvery conversant, understandable and above all, organized. I would recommend this to anybody
Not very useful.......2007-01-15
The one part of this book I found helpful was the editing of audio files. This subject is not treated with much detail on the Nero website, but this book helps make some, not all, of the terminology understandable.
But for all other subjects, the information was not very useful. It was far too elementary and didn't delve into the difficult parts of the program.
I can't recommend this book.

Best Adobe Tutor.......2007-10-03
This is my textbook for a communtiy college class on Adobe Illustrator and it is a great book. I can go back and redo the lessons and get it!! I am a visual learner and this book is really a great tutorial. I am having fun in the class but missed two lessons and caught up on my own with the book.
Excellent Resource for Learning Illustrator.......2007-07-19
While it doesn't cover any of the new features in CS3, this is an excellent guide to get your feet wet in Illustrator. It includes step-by-step instructions and leads you gradually through all the basic features of the software.
Excellent tool for beginners.......2007-04-29
I bought this book for my husband to learn Illustrator (and also the companion book for photoshop). It is an excellent tool to teach the basics of illustrator, especially for someone who has never used the program before. It's not meant for people already familiar with the program but BEGINNERS, and it does a great job. I would highly recommend it to someone who wants to learn the basics. If you do the chapter work, you will learn Illustrator.
a great book for learning Illustrator.......2006-12-21
I have worked through every page and exercise in both this book and the official Adobe "Classroom in a Book" for Illustrator CS2. Chris Botello's book (this one) is far better in my opinion. Chris covers features, topics, and techniques that the official book completely ignores (gradient meshes, as one of many possible examples). I suppose the official book may have a couple of very minor things that this book doesn't, but no book like this is completely encompassing. This book certainly comes closer to giving a fuller picture of what you can do in Illustrator than the official book.
While I find that some of the comments in other reviews below to be exaggerated, I do agree that a very small amount of the instruction text in just a couple of the particular steps of only a few of the tons of exercises could be worded better, but it's far from incomprehensible. Just a tiny amount of thinking and experimentation reveals the "why" of any step you may find baffling. I might even suggest that if this simple book befuddles you, maybe Illustrator isn't right for you altogether. No one will be holding your hand when you are doing *real* work with Illustrator.
Think of my 4 start rating as more of a 4-and-a-half star rating. I would have given the book 5 stars if it had been in full-color and included a CD. A very small number of the examples refer to a color you should be seeing in the accompanying picture, but the whole book is in black-and-white. That isn't really a big deal, since it's always obvious what the text is referring to. About the CD: while I'm sure it was a smart, cost-efficient solution for the publisher, including a CD with the book's example files would have been nice. As it is, you must download the examples from the publisher's website. Still, that isn't really a problem.
So, for greater exposure to what Illustrator CS2 does and how to do it, I highly recommend this book. It covers many features, has lots of exercises, and it has better-than-what-some-people-would-have-you-believe explanations for everything. It is worth spending time with.
Easiest learning book I've ever used........2006-11-03
This text was bought for an art class for graphic design project production. At the time, I didn't know anything about Illustrator other than using the pen tool and some basic shapes and whatnot. While I haven't used many other references for Illustrator, this would have to be THE book I recommend for learning Illustrator. It goes through and systematically teaches you everything you need to know to be a mid to high level user of Illustrator CS2. If that's what you want to be, this book is for you.

Book Description
This book shows how to use computers in educational settings by combining learning theory and instructional strategies to help the reader design software for learning and instruction. The book has been extensively revised to include new approaches to multimedia instruction as well as updating established methods such as tutorials, drills, simulations, games, and computer-based tests. Constructivist and instructivist approaches are analyzed and presented. The book is not equipment or software specific. For people interested in Educational Multimedia.
Customer Reviews:
Intructional Technology at it's best........2003-05-12
Had to buy it for a class; execellent resource for it's target audience. Make sure you're a memeber of that target audience (instructional technologists) before you buy :)
The First Book on My Reading List!.......2003-05-06
If I could only put one multimedia learning book on my bookshelf, this would be it. The "General Principles" section provides one of the best overviews I've read of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Constructivist approaches to learning (although I do think they misrepresent the Instructional Systems Design process and treat it as a purely Behavioralist approach). This section also presents an excellent overview of the learning process. The book moves on to discuss methodologies and learning sequences at an unparalleled level, including a brilliant discussion of simulations and educational games. The book closes with an overview of an approach to Design and Development that's worth reading, but far less valuable than the previous sections. Of all my design books, this one has the most dog-eared pages and underlined text; the chapter-level bibliographies alone are worth the book's price! Anyone looking to delve deep into multimedia design for learning should have this book on his or her shelf.
Excellent breadth and and depth of coverage.......2002-10-06
This is an excellent text in terms of coverage and pacing. If you are interested in human-computer interaction, this is a 'must have' text. What astonished me about this book is that it covered more issues in HCI than many dedicated user interface design books. The text admirably blends practical considerations with theoretical concerns and trends. It strongly focuses on motivational issues surrounding users of learning packages(an area largely ignored in the bulk of standard HCI texts). Don't pass over this book.
I love it, it IS the bible of Multimedia design in learning........2002-01-06
I just find it very well put together.. It takes you through the various facets of designing a course/presentation that will actually be used and useful.
The source for multimedia production.......2001-11-09
The first clue as to the value of a book is the number of editions. Generally, the true standards in a field will continue to live and be revised. This book is the standard for multimedia design and production. The foundations and theory that are explored in the beginning are as valuable as the detail in the production process that is explained. The most significant aspect of this book has to be the detail concerning methods, especially instructional simulations. Simply a must have for anyone in the field of multimedia who is looking to develop products that go beyond the traditional page turner.

Customer Reviews:
A "must have" for anyone working with the details of JPEG.......2006-08-27
Created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the JPEG standard defines a toolkit of processes for lossy and lossless encoding and decoding of continuous-tone still images. This guide, which includes the the complete text of the ISO JPEG standards DIS 10918-1 and draft DIS 10918-2, offers detailed information on the JPEG modes of operation, signaling conventions, and structure of compressed data. It also provides a general review of image-coding techniques, so it does not assume the reader has expert status in data compression and coding techniques.
This is by far the most complete exposition of JPEG in existence. It's written by two people who know what they are talking about: both served on the ISO JPEG standards committee. If you want to know how JPEG works or why it works that way, this is the book to have. There are a number of errors that were in the first printing of this book that were all repaired in the second printing. The official specification of JPEG is not currently available on-line, and is not likely ever to be available for free because of ISO and ITU copyright restrictions, which makes it valuable to have in this book.
If you study this book in depth, you should be able to write programs that completely control the reading and writing of JPEG image files. This is different from most other books that contain scattered information on the JPEG standard and on image compression, but contain insufficient information for programmers who actually need to work with the standard on a pixel-by-pixel level. Also, considering this book was published by an "academic publisher", I was surprised at its accessible tone and numerous helpful diagrams. Note that if you are interested in JPEG2000, that this book does not contain information on that standard. The following is the table of contents:
Introduction.
Image Concepts and Vocabulary.
Aspects of the Human Visual Systems.
The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
Image Compression Systems.
JPEG Modes of Operation.
JPEG Syntax and Data Organization.
Entropy Coding Concepts.
JPEG Binary Arithmetic Coding.
JPEG Coding Models.
JPEG Huffman Entropy Coding.
Arithmetic Coding Statistical.
More on Arithmetic Coding.
Probability Estimation.
Compression Performance.
JPEG Enhancements.
JPEG Applications and Vendors.
Overview of CCITT, ISO, and IEC.
History of JPEG.
Other Image Compression Standards.
Possible Future JPEG Directions.
The definitive JPEG book for programmers.......2003-10-02
This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the JPEG standard. It has two distinct parts.
The second half is the JPEG standard itself. It contains all the technical details of how JPEG works, including pseudocode flow charts, and test data to verify JPEG compliance.
The first half is the author's (less formal) understanding of the JPEG standard, where he explains the details of the standard which might be unclear to the novice.
Everything from the aspects of the human visual system, to the mathematics of Discrete Cosine Transformation, to entropy coding, to JPEG file organization is explained.
I knew nothing about image processing before studying this book. After studying this book (for a long time) I was able to write a complete application and have total control over reading and writing JPG files.
excellent!.......2002-08-15
I laughed, I cried, it was better than GIF
The number one JPEG compression book.......2000-12-20
This is a very advanced book with many technical details. A must have for everyone working in the field of image compression. For the beginner there is some text in the first part of the book, but I think that this book is primary for people working with actual implementations.
JPEG : Still Image Data Compression Standard.......2000-07-06
The only way to go! This is a well written book that is structured like a text book, but stays true to the standard. Excellent overview of FDCT theory and Entropy Coding.

Customer Reviews:
Good explanation of the standard, but not really for application developers.......2006-05-29
Because large parts of MPEG-4 are still unimplemented, and therefore were unimplemented when this book was published, it is mainly about how one would implement MPEG-4 according to the standard along with pretty good details on different parts of the technology. Unlike MPEG-2 where the killer application was digital television, MPEG-4 does not target a major and exclusive killer application but opens many new frontiers. The first two chapters are mainly an overview of the standard - its origins, its objectives, and its possibilities.
All components of an MPEG-4 presentation are discovered recursively through object descriptors (ODs). The details of this approach are explained in chapter 3. SDL is a convenient shorthand to express bitstream syntax of inherently object-oriented structures in a C++ kind of way, and is explained in detail in the context of MPEG-4 with several practical examples.
Chapter 4 on the "BIFS", binary format for scenes, is another practical chapter. This chapter presents the principles of MPEG-4 scene description, which is BIFS. BIFS is the scene description format designed by the MPEG Systems subgroup [MPEG4-1] to complement the object descriptor framework presented in Chapter 3. Whereas the OD framework defines the objects and their characteristics, BIFS defines how the objects are combined together for presentation. Numerous example are shown along with the scenes they generate to help explain the concept. You won't be able to help seeing the similarities between VRML and MPEG-4 scene descriptions.
Chapter 5 examines MPEG-J. MPEG-4 terminals may vary from high-quality TV set-top boxes to wireless and handheld devices. The computational capabilities and the network resources available at these terminals differ considerably. Without MPEG-J, these wide variations in resources would make it very hard to achieve the dream of create once, run anywhere. Thus, the objective of MPEG-J is to add to the presentation engine an application engine that can associate complex programmatic behavior with the presentation based on user input and terminal conditions. Although this chapter does a very good job of documenting what the MPEG-J API's shall contain and do according to the standard, the fact is that nobody has implemented them. This leaves the reader with the false feeling that this is something that is available.
Chapter 6 is about XMT, which is a textual representation of MPEG-4 system structures. These MPEG-4 systems structures are represented as XML elements, with attributes of the element containing its values. This can all become very complex, with considerable overlap between SMIL, MPEG-7, XMT, and X3D. This chapter does a good job of sorting out the difference and interoperability of all of the standards through diagrams and examples.
Chapter 7, Transporting and Storing MPEG-4 Content, details the delivery abstractions defined by DMIF (Delivery Multimedia Integration Framework), and then explains the FlexMux tool, which is a simple syntax to interleave data from various streams. This is followed by in-depth coverage of the MPEG-4 file format as well as the specification of MPEG-4 over MPEG-2 Systems transport. Finally, a summary of the ongoing work to define the transport of MPEG-4 over IP is provided.
From this point on in the book, everything is very theoretical. There are good clear examples of what speech coding, natural video coding, and general audio coding all are in general and according to the standard, complete with mathematics and good instructive figures. However, if you are coming to this book to find out who has implemented this part of the standard and how to use MPEG-4 audio coding "out of the box", in a practical sense, you will be disappointed. The only exception to this is chapter 12, on synthetic audio, where the AudioBIFS and Advanced AudioBIFS are introduced and explained via some very clear examples. Again, you are going to see big similarities between AudioBIFS and VRML.
In summary, I would say that if you want a good understanding of the MPEG-4 standard and the technologies behind it, you will not be disappointed. If you are coming to this book as an application programmer who wants to insert MPEG-4 capabilities into a program you are writing in much the same way that you download and use the Java3D API, you will leave unsatisfied, because much of this standard is yet to be implemented. Also, much has changed over the last four years so a second edition of this book pointing out what has actually been implemented during this time would be helpful. Given the book's age and lack of implementation details on the trickier parts of MPEG-4, I wouldn't recommend paying more than the discounted used-book price for it.
