5 out of 5 stars great and strange english humour.......2004-11-11

I have bought this book as a gift for friends ever since I owned my first copy. It is funny, beautifully illlustrated and guarenteed to appeal to all artistic types with an affiliation for Monty Python, Black Adder and all things English and comedic! Not for children, even though they love the picture. It stands alone although is really best enjoyed along with the other Lady Coddington fairy books.
I am currently buying a copy for my graphic deisgner and his illustrator wife. I have no doubt he will add it to his collection of published weirdness!

5 out of 5 stars Scotch-guard your wardrobe and prepare to be amused...........2003-03-01

...because Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells is, aside from nicely done art (by Brian Froud) and brilliant satire (by Terry Jones), a fairly good glimpse into the sort of creatures that are around even if you don't want them to be, even if you aren't the sort to have pixies and goblins about because you don't believe in them or believe in them so much it creeps the little creatures out. Check under your VCR or underneath the layer of papers covering a desk to see what I mean, as you've probably got Doggitus Mucilagus sticking some loose change to the wood.
Extremely funny and far from fiction, get it for yourself and as a gift for your favourite neat-freak.

5 out of 5 stars Rather inventive.......2001-07-03

Hilarious and all-together head-scratching, as you find yourself realizing they're talking about something you've been wondering about all along. You may have thought you were the only one undergoing the cruel and unusual punishment of these noxious fumes and stains, but here you find you are not alone... If you're going to read this aloud as a bed-time book or as a book of quotations, you are required by law to read it aloud with an English accent. If you cannot speak with an English accent or if it is terrible beyond measure, please read silently. Don't even mouth the words as you read. If by chance, you meet someone who is talking about smells and stains in a bad English accent, smack him. If he's bigger than you, you may let him off with a warning...or politely kick him and run, because big guys take longer to build up the inertia to accelerate than little guys. If he doesn't catch you and is breathing heavily, then run up to him and smack him. That should get the point across.

5 out of 5 stars Not just funny..........2000-12-12

...but also a bit disarming! Some of the stains and "odor" illustrations in the book look... well, "fresh". I'm not altogether sure that I want to know how the book publisher achieved this effect, but it definately adds bonus points in my mind.

So, the authors of the book claim to have found a gadget that allows them to communicate with smells and stains. Odd, to think that such things are sentient, but nonetheless, their commentary is, of course, hilarious.

Not that I mean to give anything away, but my personal favorite is "The Great Stain of the Apocalypse" and the theory surrounding it. You'll have to get the book (which I recommend) to find out more!

5 out of 5 stars Have been looking for uncle Quentin.......2000-06-20

So nice that you all found uncle Quentin. I do need to talk with him. Can't believe everything that you read. What he is not telling you about is all the fairies that escaped from London and landed in (of all places) Des Moines, Iowa. I need to know where to get in touch with uncle.

Dark, erotic and disturbing, Giger's work is among the most brilliant fantasy art of the century. This oversized and stunning collection contains 200 photographs, paintings, and sculptures, as well as interviews, essays, and autobiographical text. Foil-stamped dust jacket.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-01-06

Horrific? Yes, but beautiful none the less. The art in this book offers a great view into Giger's mind. Giger's use of the airbrush is phenomenal, giving his art a very realistic style to it. While flipping the pages, I felt like I was either reliving a nightmare or viewing satan's personal photo album. A truly unique experience.

I highly recommend this book based on its unique and excellently rendered imagery.

4 out of 5 stars A coffee table book for your torture chamber.......2002-11-20

Giger's art, like the music of Marilyn Manson, the paintings of Jackson Pollock, and the clothing taste of Cher, tends to provoke extreme reactions in people (the classic "love-hate" relationship). This book, as well as the first Necronomicon volume, delves deep into the subconscious and comes up with fists full of squirming demons and violent yet artful sexual imagery. Some people are so repulsed by these "shadowed" parts of the psyche that they condemn Giger's art in general, while others wallow in the decay and degradation he depicts, believing it to be a mirror of the world they see around them. I personally keep Giger's work next to that of Alex Grey on my bookshelf, representing the dark repressed side of human nature coexisting along with the transcendental, spiritual side. Some may call Giger's art spiritual; I personally find it far too celebratory of the flesh for it to be truly spiritually-themed. If you are considering buying this book, first of all be forewarned: it is graphic and disturbing, but if you're looking at Giger books to begin with you probably already knew that. Also, I find the first Necronomicon volume to be better than this one. But if you are a fan you definitely will not be disappointed. You should probably buy one of Giger's lower-priced retrospectives if you're only going to have one of his books, but the attractively presented Necronomicons are the logical next step if you find yourself wanting more. Giger's work is very yin; just make sure you have some yang on your bookshelf to balance it.

5 out of 5 stars totally Giger.......2000-07-07

Well as the Biggest Giger fan in the world i could never express the value of each book that he publishes. If your looking for something new, strange, fun, and exotic H.R. Giger is the man to see, with his uniqe style of erotic horror and morbid imaginTION this book has no exception, check it out today. you won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Life Is Good........1998-10-18

As Giger fans, this is an excellent follow-up to "Necronomicon", with more gorgeous pictures. Another excellent gift for that special weirdo in your life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Art of James Christensen.......2007-05-17

I love this book! I am an artist and illustrator. When I need inspiration to open my own creative juices, I study the pages of this book. Christensen's images come from a pure expression of the inner creative child blended with the quirky imagination of a "Renaissance" painter gone wild!

5 out of 5 stars Well Named Book from the Land a Little Left of Reality.......2006-01-01

There's really no way to tell what James Christensen's art is like. It's as unsatisfactory as trying to describe what chocolate tastes like to the person who's never tasted it. It has to be experienced to be appreciated.

This is a wonderful collection reproducing almost all of Christensen's earlier work. It includes some "serious" works of which the artist clearly is a master, but his fantasy art is unlike anyone elses. It takes flights of fancy and works of whimsy to completely new heights. The person who can go through this delightful romp among a truly creative genius' works and not find themselves smiling for most of it is suffering from an atrophied sense of humor.

If you like fantasy, get this book. If you like art, get this book. If you have a sense of humor and the willingness to use it, get this book. Warning: you may have to take this book in small doses, or your smile may suffer from overwork.

2 out of 5 stars Must be an acquired taste.......2003-03-29

I got this book as a Christmas gift along with a painting by the artist. He's a good artist. Make no mistake about that. But you'd better be an ardent gamer to really enjoy his subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Feast For The Eye.......2002-08-11

This book causes you to see through the eyes of a child again, playing with reality and delighting in possibilities. It gets your "imaginative juices" flowing to where you won't look at ordinary, every day objects in the same way again. The artist provides the reader with insight into his whimsy, while at the same time providing a magical feast for the eye!

5 out of 5 stars A Journey of the Imagination : The Art of James Christensen.......2001-07-10

Excellent. A book to read over and over again and discover new "journeys". Highly recommended for James Christensen fans and others who need a place to escape sometimes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have for any art fan.......2005-01-31

I recently purchased Spectrum 9, 10, and 11. These books are absolutely wonderful, and I would recommend them to any artist or fan of fantasy/sci fi art. They are extremely well put together, of high quality (reproduction wise), have a large number and variety of artists, and contain some of the most beautiful works of art I have seen. Some of the subject matter can be disturbing or somewhat sexual in nature (certainly nothing explicit, but not exactly innocent either), so I wouldn't recomend them for the very young (12 or under?) if you are a parent. These books are worth every penny and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Real Art.........2004-04-12

This book is like a kick-ass mobile art gallery. Anyone interested in some cool artists with real talent that you can't find in museums or galleries should have this edition on their coffee tables or on their mantles. A visual cornicopia of excellently presented ideas compiled in a book that will have you closely staring at the pages. Really cool.

4 out of 5 stars Consistent with the series........2003-04-04

Not unlike the other titles in the Spectrum series, Spectrum 9 provides a great overview of contemporary fantastic art, the best emerging artists, new trends, and samples of the forever-loved art. The artwork is much better documented with sources listed for further study of fantastic art.

If you've ever admired a cover on a sci-fi book, cool credits in a fantasy movie, or even action figures of your favorite super heroes, this book might be for you. The nice thing about the Spectrum series is that you do not need to reach for a specific volume to look at specific form of art. Each volume offers a pretty even and ,personally I think, good cross section of the current fantastic art and design.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular, As Usual.......2003-01-14

I have been patiently waiting (OK, maybe not so patiently) since November for Spectrum 9 to be released. Even though I had to wait an extra month and a half, it was well worth the wait. Once again, the Spectrum series provides us with the best in contemporary and fantastic art, and it IS fantastic. Entries range from weird, to gory, to funny, to beautiful. I began this series with Spectrum 8, then bought 7. Unfortunately, the other 6 are out of print (and cost a pretty penny), but these 3 will do. If you like sci-fi/fantasy art, this is the book for you. There's something for everyone, and in my opinion, there is not one bad painting in the whole book. Buy this today - you will get more than your money's worth.

Included are interesting notes about their most demanding commissions and why they chose the particular mediums used for them. This book is an excellent introduction to fantasy art.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2002-04-05

I got this book for christmas present and I was suprised, great illustrations from alan lee, john howe, brom, dave mckeane and chris moore. highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD BOOK FOR FANS AND ILLUSTRATORS OF FANTASY ART........2002-01-23

This 4.5 star book covers a wide variety of illustrators of traditional and computer media. Although this book is lacking in showing how the illustrators work it shows a good amount of artwork in progress by each of the illustrators shown. In my opinion Don Maitz and Brom are the only ones in this book that deserve the title on the books cover.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good.......2001-02-13

This Book is Fantastic. I know some people may have been dissapointed that it didnt mention as many Fantasy artists, but for that, you need to buy the "Spectrum" fantasy books. This book is Fantastic BECAUSE It took a few of the many great artists, and let them tell about themselves and how they made it to where they are and what theyve done, as well as some sketches and behind the masterpiece work. There was a wide variety of both fantasy and science fiction, paint, drawing and digital. Great for detail. But if you want an overview of MANY artists, its not what youre looking for, (as I said). The color and layout of the book is done well. Great book to have, especially if you're an aspiring fantasy artist.

3 out of 5 stars Too little and without promise.......2001-02-12

When I first recieved this book I was very disappointed. I've gone back to the book on a few occasions and I've come to the conclusion that, for me, it's decent enough. Some of the work in here doesn't come close to being considered masterpieces. While some of it is very good (Brom, Alan Lee, John Howe and Rick Berry particularly look good) some of the other work looks contrived and uninspiring.I'm not going to lambast the artists who created the work I didn't like. There's no point in being rude and I respect that these artists may very well have labored sincerely at their craft. Some of their work was even decent. On the other hand, I have to ask myself if they were the person on the street would they respond to images that look like spliced photos of leather clad fetish inspired fembots with what looks like gun barrels (?) for heads? I had to study that piece to make out that they were female even as they they had the basic scrawny model physique. While some of the work I didn't like communicated ideas I could relate to, others married the shocking with visuals in attempts to call itself art. Sensory response can be achieved by kicking a dog, however it's not likely to be considered art.Too make matters worse, while some of the work is graphic it's also over-stylized. If fantasy, as it's known to be, can be shocking (or just disturbing) as some of this work is, than once again we reduce the form to the lowest common denominator. "Wow! This is so cool." "Why?" "Cause I never saw this before." Is fantasy art be lowered to that most contrived form of visual impact that is called "conceptual art"? Please, count me out. Even worse is the fact that, for me, the unusual pieces were later viewed as just tacky and even later, boring. That's where I use the "contrived" label. Most of the other digital art was nothing short of boring even as it was unusual. What's the point of being unusual if it's still boring? Most of the traditional paintings were all right but, again, some of it was boring. What was the point the writer and editor were trying to highlight? In conclusion, there is some very good work in this book but there are also some works that left me wishing for straight up paintings and drawings again. The digital age has promised a lot and delivered very little. And none of it has inspired me to buy a print, frame it and display it. I'm still hopeful that it progresses beyond what's presented here.

4 out of 5 stars Nice designs.......2007-10-05

I wanted some design ideas for use in polymer and metal clays, and I came across the Dover CD series. I've purchased several and like all of them. This book is particularly good for women's faces. I like portraits and have begun making pins with faces as the central motifs. This book should help me create some new styles. I'm very pleased. The CD was easy to install and use. It's been a while since I used a clip art program--it was on floppy disks then!!--but I found it easier to navigate with this system than the older one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Designs and Easy to Use.......2006-11-10

I bought this and two other Dover design books with CD-ROMs and am completely satisfied with all of them. In fact, there are so many good designs that the only problem was trying to decide which ones were my favorites to use.

These are completely easy to use, just put the CD-ROM in the computer and it does the rest. I'm not the most tech-savvy person, so if say it was easy, it really was easy.

Although I bought these to use to dress up wedding invitations and programs, I can definitely see myself using these in the future for other projects. Great buys.

3 out of 5 stars Standard Dover Fare.......2006-02-25

A decent book, typical Dover publication, a few repeats from other books but most is new stuff. The cd works great and speeds up usage. Overall I was pleased with the selection.

Book Description

The Art of Walt Disney is one of Abrams' enduring classics. Thirty years and well over half a million copies after its first publication in 1973, it is still considered the definitive study of The Walt Disney Company's vast artistic achievements through the decades. The book tells the remarkable story of Walt Disney and the company he built, from Mickey Mouse to animated feature films to theme parks. Based on hundreds of interviews with Disney staff members past and present, the text is illustrated with more than 800 illustrations ranging from concept art to film stills to views of the theme-park attractions.

This revised and expanded edition covers all of the major projects since the 1995 edition, including the films Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range, as well as Disney's collaborations with Pixar: Toy Story I and II; Monsters, Inc. ; Finding Nemo (the highest-grossing animated film in history); and The Incredibles, due for release this year. The live-action films and Broadway productions are also covered, as well as the latest theme-park developments, including brand-new parks such as Tokyo DisneySea and Hong Kong Disneyland. AUTHOR BIO: Christopher Finch is a regular contributor to Architectural Digest and the author of more than 20 books, including The Art of the Lion King, Jim Henson: The Works, and Abrams' Norman Rockwell's America.

3 out of 5 stars a puff piece, however spectacular the images may be.......2007-02-28

This book goes through the entire Disney legacy, in what is supposed to be art criticism. As far as it goes, the text is pretty good, but they are mere accompaniments to the photos, which is the bane of many art/design books. Finch makes an effort at being comprehensive, though ultimately - if you read through the whole thing - it comes off as a vanilla milk shake, with virtually no depth and ultimately flattering to just about everything Disney.

Moreover, the beginning of the text is far stronger than the end, reflecting hte fact that this is an update. As such, the author worked much harder and dug deeper on the sections that covered Walt Disney's work and ideas directly - the subject of the first edition and far more interesting than later work - and then feels the rest is pasted on to update it. To cover the post-Walt Disney things, many of which represent great art in and of themselves - would merit an independent work like the first volume.

Futhermore, by separating the book into discrete sections devoted to film, TV, parks, etc., the author misses one of the most important aspects of the Disney company: its work is self-reinforcing through all the media. Thus, though the early TV shows did not get enough commercial sponsorship and hence lost money, Walt Disney viewed the shows as the ultimate tool to implant his brand in the minds of the young. Even the toys were part of this, though they are almost entirely neglected in this book. It all fits together, each part morphing into the others, which Finch fails to see.

The worst failing of this book, though, is its utter lack of analysis beyond crude evocations of historical context. Though purporting to be a critic, Finch does not ponder any of the company's impact on, or as a reflection of, American culture, particularly the dark side. Why do many people (myself not among them as I essentially love the DIsney legacy) despise the way the company transforms culture into its own immediately recognizable brand? What does it say about the American predilection to recreate realities, such as a mock European village, rather than seeking out the real thing (even at similar cost)? These are tough questions.

In the end, this reads like something directly out of a PR department. I enjoyed the images and some of the reconstrctions of the films. But this offers little in the way of true criticism.

This is such a great book with great information about the disney company and of course mickey! and lots of great pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Disney Lovers Dream.......2007-01-13

If you love animations from Disney, or the Disney success story, this is a must buy. My Wife loves this.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any and all Disney fans!!.......2006-02-23

This is not just a book for Disney art lovers -- it is a terrific background on the Disney Company as a whole and the process in the art of animation. It goes into detail as to the extent of Walt's genius and leadership abilities. Never the less, the art in this collection is phenomenal!! I personally love the preliminary sketches and the process that eventually become what you see on the screen. There is also a chapter on the role the Disney Studios played during WWII. I will cherish this edition for many years to come.

3 out of 5 stars A few words of caution before you buy it..........2006-01-19

This book gives good insight into the story of the Disney company. It was nice to hear an honest account of whether each movie was a success or failure with critics and audiences, though I feel some were a little shortchanged. A book of this size should have had a chapter (or at least a full page) dedicated to each movie. And while it is heavily illustrated, the text does not in any way rely on the pictures. I guess screen shots from the movies or brochure style pictures of the parks are "art" but based on the title I was expecting more unique in depth imagery like preproduction and concept art, storyboards, construction photos (from the parks).

If you have the older Concise edition of this book, then I don't think this one is necessary. So there are stills from a few more movies, but all the classics up to Fantasia 2000 are covered in the smaller book. Besides, the best of the new movies covered is Finding Nemo, and who doesn't have that on tape or DVD? Don't spend this much money on a few screen shots, just watch your movie. And I was particularly interested in seeing some of the new parks that weren't in the other book (California Adventure and Tokyo DisneySea) but alas they accounted for about 3 pages. Just a warning because the annoying shrink wrap prevents anyone from flipping through to decide based on the contents whether or not to fork over that much money (and the cover is so enticing...).

If you have never read anything about Disney this is a great place to start, but if you already have a collection of Disney books (especially this one's concise ed.) then this one doesn't have much more to offer. And if your true passion is in the theme parks, don't let this deceptive title make you believe that equal emphasis is given to the "Magic Kingdoms". There are way better (and cheaper) books on that subject that will give you much more insight.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2001-05-06

A nice coffee-table book, featuring both well-known and almost-forgotten pictures. There is a wonderful two-page Foreword by Ray Bradbury.

This book is divided into two sections. The first section, "Doorways to the Future," which has lengthy and informative narrative, focuses on the history of Sci-Fi art. Beginning with woodcuts, early mechanical drawings, and illustrations for the works of Jules Verne, this section gently leads the reader though the many stages of evolution of fantastic art. There are quite a few black and white drawings from such artists as Henri de Montaut, Joseph Clement Coll, Virgil Finlay, and Leo Summers (a colorblind artist who created some fine, detailed sketches). Also included are some examples from early "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers" comics.

The second section, "Masters of the Infinite," showcases artists in alphabetical order, starting with Paul Alexander and ending with Stephen Youll. Of course some popular artists are left out, but the samples of those who are included do give ample credit to those named (although some of the selections are not always among the artists' "best"). There are a few borderline Sci-Fi/Fantasy works in this book, from Frank Frazetta, Manual Sanjulian, and Boris Vallejo, though most of the art is focused on Science Fiction art.

The art in this book includes book covers, magazine covers, illustrations for stories, and commissioned/noncommissioned art. The colors are sharp and clear, edges are crisp and clean. There are many full-page pictures, even a few two-pagers. No pictures are "too small."

While a great book, I'm taking one-and-a-half stars off for the bad editing. Quite a few of the works are identified incorrectly (mislabeled), really they are just transposed in most cases. Still, someone should have caught these errors before the book was printed.

Recommended for Sci-Fi buffs.

Three-and-a-half stars, rounded up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-10-17

This is a truly wonderful, beautiful book. Opening the mind and eye to all sorts of great science fiction artists that might otherwise be forgotten. I spoke to Mr. DiFate about what caused the absence of the important artist Chris Foss from his book. He said there were problems with, first, getting Foss's permission (Foss wanted all his work to spread over the crack in the middle of the book, as if this would deter electronic copying), and then Foss dilly-dallied in sending his work to DiFate until it was too late to publish. Really too bad, because this is otherwise the best imaginable survey of science fiction art.

5 out of 5 stars A fine survey of a neglected field.......2000-05-15

I'll add just a couple of comments to the good reviews done on this. I see INFINITE WORLDS as a great survey of science fiction art - there is little purely fantasy art here. DiFate is himself a leading SF artist, and his narrrative in the book is enthusiastic and informative. If you ever get the chance to see him in person, as I did in Chattanooga, don't miss it! He clearly knows the field very well, but he uses artistic jargon sparingly. The book surveys a wide variety of styles, usually paintings but some in other media. Yet I think those who denounce his inclusion of earlier "pulp" art are missing his purpose in this. DiFate is trying to present here a history of SF art and to show its variety. He sees some of those "pulp" artists, especially Frank R. Paul, as very influential on later artists. Some of that work was of good quality, and takes up much less than half the book in any case. Incidentally, INFINITE WORLDS is also beautiful. The various sizes of the images is nicely balanced, and the book is large enough for full-page reproductions to look very impressive. Maybe this book will encourage more museums to take notice of the many fine science fiction art works that have been produced!

4 out of 5 stars A coffee table book, but a beautiful one.......2000-05-07

Infinite Worlds is divided into two lushly illustrated halves. The first half, "Doorways to the Future", is an eighty-odd page history of science fiction art. Di Fate goes back to Bosch and da Vinci, and then gives several pages to the late nineteenth century illustrators such as Robida and the early pulp artists before moving on to the genre work that fills most of the pages.

Di Fate's history is sound, and the stories are interesting, but he accompanies them with pictures that are distractingly gorgeous to look at and which make it hard to concentrate on the tale he tells. Page 34, for example, has a full page reproduction of the Startling Stories cover for van Vogt's "The Shadow Men" that shows a black robot firing a ray gun, with green rays shooting from its eyes, and a beautiful scantily clad woman struggling in its arms. How can you concentrate on the text with that sort of thing going on?

The second half (actually two-thirds by page count) of the book is called "Masters of the Infinite" and consists of (mostly) two page spreads of each of about a hundred artists. There's a little text too, maybe two or three paragraphs, to give you some context for the artist. Only the most influential get more than two pages--Freas of course, Frazetta, Whelan, Paul. Richard Powers gets four pages, which is good to see--he's not as well known now as he should be, perhaps because he did so much work for book covers rather than magazines; but he is a major figure.

There are a couple of odd omissions, which other reviewers have noted below. I'll just mention one: Chris Foss, who was perhaps the single most influential British sf artist ever. What makes the omission even more extraordinary is that di Fate acknowledges Foss' tremendous influence twice, on pages 82 and 84. Perhaps there were copyright problems, and Foss' work wasn't available; whatever the reason, it's a pity.

The only other negative comment I have is that the book is no more than a survey. Lovers of the work of any of these artists will have to go elsewhere for their fix of Bonestell or Finlay or Barlowe--no one artist has more than half a dozen works here. But that's what the book is designed to be, and *as* a survey it works wonderfully well.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Source.......2000-03-31

As a science fiction screenwriter and art designer, I looked a long time to find examples of classic science fiction artwork from the past century, and found myself limited to the covers of moldy and ragged original paperback editions. Then I found this book, which contained everything I was searching for in a single place. Here is a collection of the best work from the greatest illustrators, Chesley Bonestell, Paul Lehr, Richard Powers, Stanley Meltzoff, and countless others. This is a beautiful history not only of science fiction artwork, but of science fiction itself. My only complaint: like a lot of art books, the paintings are often spread over two pages, hiding the middle of the picture in the fold of the spine. But that's my only complaint.

3 out of 5 stars NO where does it mention..........2007-02-22

the art work is great. no doubt about it, but there is no mention of the fact that the whole book is in Black and White...no color...I really would not have bought it if i had known.

4 out of 5 stars Elvintastic!.......2007-02-18

The artwork is wonderful the ELves are a wonderful mix of smoldering sexiness tinged with innocence in their big wide eyes. A visual delight.

4 out of 5 stars Cute, pretty, and erotic female elves!.......2006-03-28

Melanie certainly has talent! Her pretty female elves are a joy to behold, with most of them wearing very little in the way of clothing! Also, I especially liked the occasional girl/girl theme along with the bits of bondage here and there.

If I didn't give this one five stars it's because I think Melanie's "erotica quotient" needs to be just a little bit higher. Too many of the drawings looked staged, almost as if the eleven girls are posing for a camera. And despite some flashes of eroticism, the overall images are somewhat tame with the same expressions and imagery. Still, not a bad collection just the same.

5 out of 5 stars SEXY AND EROTIC ELVES.......2005-08-22

This book was my first exposure to the art of Melanie Klegerman Fersko and it came as a surprisingly enjoyable treat. These are not Santa's Elves (unless Hugh Hefner took over for Santa), nor are they the elves of popular fantasy fiction. These are gorgeous elves, pixies, and sprites...bright-eyed, with full pouty lips and bodies to die for. Inside we have 64 pages of black & white illustrations, some in finished pencils, others in slightly rougher pencil, all featuring sultry, sexy elven vixens as we've never seen them before. Fersko's art has a very playful edge to it with perhaps a slight Froud influence. Lush detail and fine line-work is a mark of these pieces as you'll find a number of smaller sprites and such, all fluttering in the background.

These are not just everyday Faerie-kind, but Melanie gives us faeries of all types. Some of my favorite pieces are a wild, barbaric-looking elf, primitive and fierce in animal skins and grasping a spear. Then there is a gypsy-like, lovely Elven Tarot card reader, revealing the fortunes of an unseen customer. Another stunning piece is the "Devil-elf" on page 43, clad in leather and fishnet stockings and sporting bat-like wings, this is true dominatrix! Continuing with that Dominatrix theme is a piece featuring Santa's latest helper, clad in Santa cap and whip, making sure the rest of the elves keep up on their toy-making.

There are also several bondage illustrations in the book: A stunning nude elf is bound while her captors delight in her helplessness; Another elf has her hands tied behind her back and on her knees; And one more bondage piece features a bound & gagged elf about to be given away as a gift. The bondage pieces are not harsh, in fact their sauciness reminds me more of old 30's and 40's pin-ups. One can surmise that male elves have these folded up in their wallets for inspiration as they go out to battle the Orc hordes!

Fersko takes a popular fantasy convention and tosses them into a new and sexy light!
