4 out of 5 stars More interesting than I thought it would be.......2007-10-12

Sculpting A Galaxy has some 300 color photos spread over about 200 pages and is a large-format coffee table-size book. For true Star Wars fans, this is an interesting book, not so much a book to read but a book to page through when you've nothing better to do.

4 out of 5 stars for the fans.......2007-10-04

The book is great for star wars fans. It has loads of reference photos in a variety of production areas. If you want a good present or inspiration to sculpt this would do it.

2 out of 5 stars Giant coffee table book...mostly a retread.......2007-08-02

For those who have purchased the series of "Art of Star Wars" books, as well as "Star Wars: Sketchbooks" et cetera, this tome is impressive but not novel. Many photos from those earlier books are reused here. The problem is that they have been blown up for this larger format. Consequently, the blown-up recycled photos are slightly blurry. There are some wonderful photos of star destroyer details that have not been seen before...but is that enough to merit this huge new book? That decision is up to you, but I expected heretofore unseen, crisply focused photographs.

3 out of 5 stars Great Content, Defective Copy.......2007-08-01

The actual content of the book is top notch, with many great shots model shots. I also enjoy the accompanying stories, from behind the scenes. The problem is, the binding was already coming apart when I received it. A beautiful book, marred by a crappy binding.

I received a copy of this book as a present, that was purchased on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Un livre indispensable à tout fan de Star Wars.......2007-07-19

Bonne lecture

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!.......2007-08-01

This book is a gem. It is a treasure trove of detailed photographs of the wonderful costumes created by Trisha Biggar.
If you are a costume player or just a costume historian, you will find this book a marvel. This is one of the best books I've ever seen as a record of a movie of any kind.

5 out of 5 stars a MUST HAVE book for every Starswars fan !.......2007-03-30

Absolutely wonderful !
Fantastic pictures, you will shock all your Starwars friends showing it !
And Italian fans will recognize all pics taken at italian movies' locations: Como Lake (Villa Balbianello) where the Padme&Anakin wedding cerimony was celebrated, and Lenno village.
A MUST HAVE book for every Starwars Fans.

5 out of 5 stars Costume Haute Couture..........2007-02-23

I picked this book up at a local bookstore for a whopping $5.00 . I enjoyed the movies, but they definitely aren't at the top of my favorites list. This book appealed to me purely for the fashion, costume, and design aspects. And it delivers a beautiful display for all those things. I actually found myself reading the book (usually I just dissect the pictures and draw inspiration that way), and found it to be well written as well. The text, gives insight into how a large scale costuming production works for theatrical purposes. It illustrates all of the dynamics of organizing such a production from start to finish. I imagine this would be a good read for someone interested in the theatrical costuming field. Besides that, it is a wonderful coffee table book , or uber bible of clothes for the "Con" participant. Surely worth ten times what I paid!

4 out of 5 stars Simply breathtaking!.......2007-02-09

I finally got this book - now I don't know why I waited! Totally worth it!

Anyone who is a fan of Star Wars and even a casual fan of costumes will truly enjoy this book. The book is filled with exquisitely detailed photos and descriptions of all of the costumes from Eps 1-3, and many from Eps 4-6, but the focus is really on the costumes that dominated the last 3 films - those of Amidala/Padmé, the Emperor, Bail Organa, Obi-Wan, Anakin, etc. Some of the most creative details are illustrated on the numerous characters that only appear briefly at the senate meetings, and their attire reflects their status in society as well as the environment from which they come. There are close-ups of the detailed beadwork, stitching, tooled leather and fabrics used to create each work of art. There is also a visual reference at the back of the book with images of every Star Wars costume, and there are a few foldout pages as well showing the different styled robes and gowns for some of the main characters. The next best thing would be to touch the fabric! (Supposedly you can do that in the limited edition boxed version - complete with fabric samples).

Several character illustrations by Iain McCaig, Dermot Power, and others are shown - which is amazing to see the concept art of the character with their wardrobe, then the final masterpiece by Trisha Biggar.

A must for anyone in love with Star Wars and the imaginative design that set the stage for each character.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous book.......2007-01-09

Probably one of the five or ten best Star Wars books, up there with the 'Art of' books from the Classic trilogy. This is a terrific look at Trisha Biggar's amazing work, and gets into exquisite detail on many of the sumptuous costumes from the prequels. Whether you loved or hated the films, you must admit, the outfits were out of this world, and this book chronicles all that work and effort. Well worth a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars "a heavy yet wonderful Collector's piece".......2007-01-09

I was so excited when my package arrived and couldn't wait to open it.
What i got is an unbelievable box that holds a mass of little treasures, beginning with the little piece of Darth Vaders Cape and continuing with the book itself, the fabric samples or the also included DVD.
Everything is done with so much care for the details and you also get a certificate plus a little card with your book's collectors number. I don't regret my purchase at all. Even though it was a lot of money, it's totally worth it for every fan of the Saga who doesn't just like the ships, battles or lightsaber-fights. Also i have a little suggestion - be careful carrying it around - it is really heavy :)

5 out of 5 stars The One that I've been waiting for.......2006-04-02

Ever since I saw Episode One I have been fascinated by the costume designs of the Star Wars universe and finally here is the book that shows just how special these costumes are. With large photographs of the costumes and detailed close ups that show the attention to detail.

Finally my time in a galaxy far, far away has an end?

5 out of 5 stars The Fabric of the Galaxy!.......2006-01-15

This book is above and beyond excellent. From the way that the book is packaged, presented and written, not to mention the tangible supplements that are exclusive to this edition - such as the cloth swatch from Darth Vader's cape - what a thrill it is to actually own something that has literally been a part of the Star Wars universe!

This book is highly informative, insightful and entertaining.
Packed full of sumptuous photographs, illustrations, fold-outs, cloth swatches and an exclusive DVD - ANYTHING a Star Wars fan or those with only a passing interest in film costuming could ever want.

This publication is a must. It is simply an absolute joy to behold and a treasure trove for one and all who read it. I'm sure it is destined to become a crown jewel in many a Star Wars fan book collection!

I cannot recommend Dressing a Galaxy enough - go buy it, and May The Force Be With You!

5 out of 5 stars Bar None.......2005-12-10

You can buy whatever book you want on the Star Wars films, but not having this one is a crime. Photography is amazingly clear and detailed, the inserts are awesome, and the swatches...forget about it...they are priceless.

This is, by far THE package of the Star Wars empire. Destined to be a classic and one "to die for" in the Star Wars ranks. Don't, let it pass you by.

5 out of 5 stars Pricey, yes, but it's a stunning book........2005-12-09

I was beginning to think this book wouldn't come, because the release was put back twice and then it seemed to be unavailable. Well, I guess with limited editions of this price band it's understandable. I was kind of starting to not care, because at this price I was starting to think I should save my money. Then today, my other half called me at work to say this huge parcel had been delivered. Yes!
I got home an hour ago and, well, it IS huge. Extremely well packed, a box inside another box, and then the fabric-covered clamshell box with the fastended silk wrap. Lovely. I almost didn't want to unseal it any further, but carefully I did. The fresh print smell hit me first, and within seconds I got a headache from it. Opening the box gave me that geeky excitement I haven't had since, I don't know when. I'd made sure to wash my hands first. Then I opened it. The book is outwardly the same as the regular version, set into the right-hand side of the clamshell with a red silk pull underneath to help lift it out. On the other side, there was the replica wookie belt buckle, a certificate of authenticity, a companion DVD, and a special sealed sample of Vader's cloak fabric. All looked pretty good.

I lifted out the book with the pull, and noticed it's thicker than the regular version, with lots of the special inserts I'd read about. Nice and weighty, I put it aside, because underneath is a gatefold supplement containing a dozen or more fabric samples from the costumes pictured next to them. Lovely. Really lovely. And then, underneath that, a thicker booklet showcasing digital creatures from the prequels and their costumes. I then opened the main book to find the limited edition number. There are 2,500 of these books, and I got number 2,479. I think I was lucky getting this!

So often these collectors pieces are disappointing, but I have to be completely honest with this. It's a beautiful book, and I haven't even started reading it yet, which isn't going to make a lot of difference because of the quality of the whole package. If you can get hold of a copy, do it. I know it's pricey, but you'll get over that soon enough, and you'll have what I think is one of the best pieces of Star Wars memorabilia ever made.

5 out of 5 stars very good artbook.......2005-08-02

This is a collection of Dark Horses covers and posters mostly and some panels inside. This is a very good artbook to purchase for those who enjoy great art. I myself am not a Starwars fan but i love this book for the artwork.

3 out of 5 stars Its a nice book..........2005-06-19

...as i say, its a nice book with some great images. The only thing that bugged me was that I have seen better images on the net from comics than what was in the pages of this book. At the start of each chapter there are thumbnails of characters from numerous styles and comics, but in the chapters these images arnt inside...i thought they would at least put the larger whole images of those in the thumbnails in the chapter???? over all its nice for star wars fans and colour/action references...my real vote is 2 1/2 but there is no option for that so i chose a 3.

A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a collection of essays that set out to seriously explore the vast landscape of the Star Wars cultural phenomenon. Premiere magazine editor Glenn Kenny has complied 18 well-crafted pieces from a wide array of pop culture aficionados, including ribald filmmaker Kevin Smith and Onion satirist Todd Hanson.

The pieces range from serious scholarship to self-deprecating geek confessionals. Some--such as "Pale Starship, Pale Rider: The Ambiguous Appeal of Boba Fett" by Tom Bissell--tend toward the esoteric minutiae of fandom, and are sure to please the rabid devotee. But most are kindly universal and range far beyond the spacey subject matter into more human territory. Thankfully, most of the writers don't take themselves too seriously as they make the jump to hyperspace. Thus, the collection is a pleasure to read and an interesting foray into the passionate media culture surrounding the Star Wars universe. Overall, an excellent intellectual exercise for anyone who has ever found escape in a galaxy far, far away. --Jeremy Pugh

Book Description

A Galaxy Not So Far Away is the first ever exploration of the [ innumerable ways the Star Wars films have forever altered our cultural and artistic landscape. Edited by Glenn Kenny, a senior editor and critic at Premiere magazine, this singular collection allows some of the nations most acclaimed writers to anatomize, criticize, celebrate, and sometimes simply riff on the prismatic aftereffects of an unparalleled American phenomenon. Jonathan Lethem writes of the summer he saw Star Wars twenty-one times as his mother lay dying of cancer. Neal Pollack chips in with the putative memoir of a certain young man having problems with his father, written in the voice of Holden Caulfield. Erika Krouse ponders the code of the Jedi Knight and its relation to her own pursuit of the martial arts. New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell meditates upon the mysterious figure Lando Calrissian.A classic assemblage of pop writing at its best, A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a book for everyone who loves Star Wars films and seeks to understand just what it is about these films that has so enchanted an entire generation of filmgoers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A critical mass of critics . . ........2004-08-10

I was just out of graduate school and working in my first professional position when the first Star Wars movie (now known as "Episode 4") came out. I loved it. I had been a confirmed pulp-sf addict since the mid-1950s, and I was predisposed to enjoy the film for what it was, not for what the critics thought it was (and what they apparently wanted me, as a card-carrying intellectual, to believe it was). But I'm not too proud to admit that I also loved "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" when they came out. I mean, this stuff is great fun, right? The stuffier film critics, though, decided that George Lucas had killed the movies -- just as there were cries of anguish back in the late '20s, when the movies began to talk. Yes, the Star Wars universe has had a great influence on culture, and not just "pop" culture, but so have Gucci and Ronald Reagan and McDonald's. Most of the contributors to this anthology are of an age to have grown up on Star Wars, and the distinction can easily be made between those who don't take it, or themselves, too seriously (Jonathem Lethem, Neal Pollack, Erika Krouse, and Elwood Reed), and those for whom Lucas is Evil incarnate (notably Arion Berger and Tom Carson). The book is an interesting read for those, like me, with an interest in film-making and screenwriting that goes beyond just sitting there with a bag of popcorn, but I could only shake my head at some of the breast-beating Jeremiads.

5 out of 5 stars Not So Long Ago, Pretty Close to Home........2003-02-17

A GALAXY NOT SO FAR AWAY is a collection of essays that attempt to illustrate just how far reaching STAR WARS has impacted and influenced our society and culture. Most of the essays are positive, many are humorous, and several are nostaligiac in their reflections. Some, however are negative and a few are quite thought provoking. I especially enjoyed reading Kevin Smith's "Married to the Force" and Todd Hansen's "A Big Dumb Movie About Space Wizards". The two essays that paint the STAR WARS phenomenon in the most negative light "Jedi Uber Alles" and "Anakin, Get Your Gun" are also the two essays that made me pause and think the most. I also enjoyed the essay that illustrated just how STAR WARS has influenced hip-hop music, suggesting that hip-hop wouldn't exist (at least not in it's current form) without STAR WARS.

This book is not a collection of essays about "What STAR WARS means to me" (though there are a few of those in here). Instead, it is a book illustrating just how huge and powerful the little space opera that could has influenced our society. This is a great book for most STAR WAR fans or for anyone interested in popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars Star Wars Realpolitik.......2002-09-11

Don't listen to disgruntled Star Wars fans on this book. There are only a few out and out negative pieces here (one, "Jedi Uber Alles" by Tom Carson, is actually pretty good); most are fond, respectful, but above all they're *interesting.* No, this isn't a licensed love fest. Nor does it claim to be. It's about how the movies have affected our culture and our minds, and it's done so in good and bad ways. Star Wars, as this book's editor Glenn Kenny points out, did not at all kill movies. But it seems pretty inarguable that it made them louder and dumber, which (again as Kenny points out) is weird because George Lucas is the world's biggest independent filmmaker who controls with an auteur's pickiness his own product. But anyway: The really good essays here are Jonathan Lethem's (about seeing Star Wars 21 times in one summer), Tom Bissell's (about Boba Fett), Todd Hanson's (about The Phantom Menance), Lydia Millet's (about Darth Vader), Elvis Mitchell's (about Lando), and the above-mentioned Carson essay which I hate as a fan but admit makes some good points. There are also some really quite dreadful essays (say nothing but good of the dead) which I won't stoop to name. All Star Wars fans should get this book; it's important, and it's funny, and it has smart, tough things to say.

1 out of 5 stars Opinionated gobbledygook.......2002-09-05

I bought this book, imagining it was filled with fans doting on about my favourite movie series. But in fact, it was filled with that awful self-important ranting that so many annoying critics favour. Some of the chapters were ammusing trips down memory lane, a trip I can certainly share. But most were simply attacks on the Star Wars saga (a more and more common stance these days, since George has now decided that Greedo fired first, and since he introduced us to Jar Jar Binks, it has become cool to rag on the series). I began skipping chapter after chapter, constantly muttering under my breath, "Why did I waste my money on this opinionated gobbledygook!?"
Save your time and your money. Unless of course you enjoy listening to critics whine about how stupid things are.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-08-24

One of the funniest books I have ever read. You think the pieces are cute, and they are, but then they're serious, and you're stunned. What a weird, wonderful project and what a perfect gift for movie-lovers. Lydia Millet's piece on Darth Vader is a must-read whether you like Star Wars or not. This book should sell for a long, long time.

4 out of 5 stars Lot's of detail, but prices are too high.......2004-09-05

A very nice book with lots of basic information about lost of different Star Wars collectibles (you name it, and it's probably in there). There are lots of full-color sample pictures, but you will not see pictures of EVERY item in a given category (i.e., all action figures). My favorite part of this book is that it actually provides a brief description of every single trading card and sticker (and there are about 1000 vintage cards and stickers... and a lot more new ones, which it also describes). Card prices are broken down by full box, empty box, unopened pack, just wrapper, complete set, and each individual card. Figure prices are included for just about every possible card variation, as well as for a mint/complete loose figure. The bad news is that the prices for the action figures and trading cards (that's mostly what I collect) are often far too high. I don't remember buying or selling for such high prices either before or after this book was written. Finally, I don't think you need both this book and the 2000 pocket size edition by the same author. If you want more detail, go for this larger edition. If you want something that travels well, go for the pocket edition. They are basically the same book, you just have to decide if you want detail or portability (keeping in mind that the prices quoted in both are probably far too high).

4 out of 5 stars IF YOU THINK THESE ARE THE PRICES YOUR GONNA GET AT AUCTION.......2000-08-19

THINK AGAIN! THIS BOOK IS VERY HELPFUL IN IDENTIFING WHAT YOU HAVE. BUT...IF YOU LOOK THRU THIS BOOK AND THINK YOUR GONNA MAKE A KILLING ON EBAY, THINK AGAIN! THATS WHAT I THOUGHT. ITEMS ARE ONLY WORTH WHAT PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY AND MOST OF THESE PRICES SEEM HIGH. ACTION FIGURES AND RARE ITEMS ARE PROBABLY MORE "IN SYNC" WITH THE STATED MARKET VALUE THAN ALL OTHER ITEMS.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2000-07-09

I have recently goten back in to collecting Star Wars stuff, and found the book very helpful in finding items that I never knew existed. With the popularity of online auctions, some of the prices are not really reflecting the "market value" of some of the items, but it does give you a baseline to work with. It explains things in an easy to understand way, and won't lose you if you aren't a hard core collector. There are a lot of photos to help out.

5 out of 5 stars What a magnificant complete book with pictures........1999-06-10

This is a very good book. I bought this book last year, and even though there are a few photo errors, (a few pictures had incorrect titles), this book is complete and the content far exceeds any little flaws you can find. This book shows prices of pratically every Star Wars item ever manufactured, from Star Wars paper bathroom cups, to Star Wars bed sheet. From posters, pins, magnets, to action figures, movie theater promos and tons of foreign Star Wars items, this book has it all complete with prices and color pictures. Buy it, you wont go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Prices were Right on Target.......1999-01-02

Great Book, color photos were excellent, a hand full of photo title errors, but overall great book. Detailed listings covering every posible Star Wars item, and prices.
