Book Description

For the past 39 years, the covers of Rolling Stone have depicted the great icons of popular culture, from John Lennon, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Madonna to Steve Martin, Uma Thurman, and Richard Nixon. Often it was an appearance on the cover that launched a performer's legendary status in the first place. An enormous hit when it appeared in 1997 as Rolling Stone: The Complete Covers, 1967-1997 (nearly 100,000 copies sold in all editions), this fantastic collection has been revised and updated to include the covers since 1997 up to the much-publicized 1,000th cover, slated to hit newsstands in May 2006.

With an updated introduction by Jann S. Wenner as well as new excerpts from the magazine and quotes from photographers and their celebrity subjects, this nostalgic journey down the memory lane of pop music, entertainment, and politics is irresistible.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-08-08

I would have liked more information about what was in each magazine. Even if it was just a paragraph about the times and the person on the cover. But on a whole it was very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-27

This book brought me back so many, many years. I remember so many of these covers. It was a present for my husband and he just loves going through the book all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Still rolling along.......2006-11-15

If you have the original large 1998 edition this latest book is just a continuation, though smaller in size, up to the thousandth edition in May/June 2006. I was rather impressed with the earlier book except for the silly tiny type dates and photo credits for each cover, amazingly set in four point. Fortunately someone has realised that tiny type is not really readable in a domestic lighting environment so the cover dates and photo credits have been upped to just over five point, still rather small though. Apart from this all the other text is readable and combined with the excellent design and printing makes this a wonderful book to look at.

Like the first book it is not just a memory jogger of covers, there are plenty of sidebar excerpts from the magazine. It is the covers though that are the five stars plus. Not many consumer publications manage to consistently retain a quality cover look over so many years and in the Stone's case with the same logo since January 1981. Look through the index of photographers and illustrators and you'll see why the covers look so cool: Annie Leibovitz shot 142 of them, Herb Ritts has forty-six, Richard Avedon eighteen. With this sort of quality no wonder it always looked good. Even the early issues in the rather inflexible newspaper format had a distinctive cover style.

I think this beautiful looking updated book will be a strong seller (not least because of Amazon's bargain price) for those who lived with rock for the last thirty-nine years.

Quirky observation: the book's title is on a wrap-around strip of paper (rather bizarrely called a belly band in the trade) and I can't see it staying in one piece for long as this is just the kind of book that will enjoy a lot of handling.

Book Description

Steve Tolleson's approach to design might best be described as scientific: it involves relentless research in which every element of a project—down to its letterforms—is subject to rigorous study through almost imperceptible permutations. The end results of this process are designs that are meticulously executed, sometimes cerebral, but never without emotion and wit. ?
Soak Wash Rinse Spin investigates the cycles of the Tolleson Design creative process through a textual and graphic layering of information involving four phases: research (the intake of as much information as they can gather), collaboration (with the client and with the other members of the creative team), visual exploration (the workbook process, which includes refinements and the examination of multiple options), and environmental influences (consideration of the ultimate purpose of the solution).

5 out of 5 stars good for designer.......2007-07-12

it's a little expensive but it's worthy when i got it. very good book for graphic designer.

5 out of 5 stars W O W.......2005-03-15

This compilation of tolleson design work is just amazing. the book features a lot of their best works and is very inspirational. definately worth buying, and its expensive, in fact, its really affordable, making it even more worthwhile ;)

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of inspiring design.......2003-06-13

I was a bit concerned about buying this book after reading complaints about type size, but after some debating I decided to just buy this book and decide for myself... and I'm glad that I did. Sure the type is small and a bit hard to read. But there are only significant ammounts of type on the first twenty pages. The majority of the remaining 268 pages contain mostly images. Some pages contain no type at all, other than page numbers.

This one gets 5 well deserved stars. Forget the type complaints and pick up a copy of this valuable addition to any designer's book collection.

3 out of 5 stars Beauty in Imperfection.......2002-07-22

Soak Wash Rinse Spin's typesetting forces you to stop reading after too few pages. You really want to dig in but are quickly demoralized into putting it down.

Sagmeister's, "Made you look" was studied in wonder over a 10 hour session immediately after opening the package. I had never heard of him and i was quickly converted into a believer, all other scheduled items became secondary. Long lines of sans serif tiny type are the only thing that stopped this book from having an impact of similar strength.

An unrelated note, within one week, the binding cracked.

One research misjudgement on my part was to assume the book was published very recently and included their newest projects (see tolleson.com) It was published in 2000 of course, some projects have glimmers of past trends.

Nothing compares to the sheer visual firepower Tolleson blasts with both barrels. There is a beautiful logic flowing with every peice and you feel drawn into the scientific precision of the studio's creative process.

A printer's eye glass would be a fun attachment to assist in reading this book, which despite it's flaws is a proud part of my collection.

3 out of 5 stars What's the point of this size?.......2002-04-19

This is a portfolio of work that is always interesting and often beautiful. The approach is as stimulating as the work and, sadly, this is where the book is done a great disservice by the size of the type. It is simply too small to read comfortably and seems to invite its dismissal. Everything seems irrelevant- small type not intended to be read because it's not important. It's unnecessary and unforgivable- an elementary folly that made me question the whole book.

4 out of 5 stars Don't let the wanna-be's steer you away from this collection..........2007-06-08

First - What's wrong Jaw Line? Did you not get accepted to Art Center or were you rejected by Industrial Light & Magic? You're not even a blip on the radar of these artists until you do something worth recognizing so please indicate where your book is on Amazon or keep your envious mouth shut.

Now, on to the review - The book is comprised of some of the better artists working in film and entertainment design today. Please keep in mind, this book is a nice reference tool for artists looking for a way to keep motivated and learn a few things along the way. I agree, there could have been more sketches and character development, but I'll take this for what it is - a pleasing reference tool for those of us who obviously haven't reached Jaw Line's impeccable talent.

Enjoy the fine work.

2 out of 5 stars Putting the vanity in "vanity press"..........2007-03-20

You should definitely get this book if you want to learn how far self-promotion can take you. Or alternately, you could save your 30-some-odd bucks and just take this review to heart.

I bought the book to keep around as inspiration--printed out jpeg's just don't cut it and they don't last, right? I also bought it to check out what my competition was doing out on the Left Coast, sort of to light the fire under me.

Well.

The book is printed nicely, and I felt that a lot of the text was pertinent and interesting. The images, though?

Well.

The bulk of the book (the first part) is the seven LA guys showing off their work, and a lot of it. Some were pretty ok, but there are several guys who may be experienced, commercially viable pros, but whose work blows. I mainly found the best images to be in the "and friends" part, which is the second half of the book where various other guys get an image or two displayed.

There are some nice visual pauses that come from z-brush and sculpy images, but there are just too many instances of very high-tech high school art. There were no Craig Mullins, Dussos or Syd Meads in the bunch, it's safe to say.

So, take the tip: even if you suck or are abysmally average...promote, promote, promote--and one day, you too can get seen!

5 out of 5 stars Concept Design 2: Works from Seven Los Angeles Entertainment Designers And Seventeen Guest Artists.......2007-02-12

An interesting book as these artists are now moving on in their careers and we see the results of their work in film and other entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to any digital artist's collection........2006-09-07

I bought this book on a wim. The title and the size of the book led me to believe it would have some descent sized pictures and would be a good collection of original ideas. I wanted something that would inspire me to work harder on my own work. And that is exactly what I got.

I am quite pleased with this book. It is worth the price. There is a good variety of subjects, some that impress me, some that don't. But all the work is skillfully done. There is little in the way of artist comments or direction on how to achieve the effects they achieve, but that is the way I like it. This is more about the work. More text would mean less space for artwork. The artwork is mostly digital, however, there is an appropriate amount of sketches, too. The last few pages have information on the artists and their websites(if an artist has one).

I am disappointed there aren't more sketches or character designs. Most of the work is mechanical or environmental. It needed more character designs to balance it out, in my opinion.
There are some artists I didn't care for, subject matter I didn't care for(the concept cars for one), but nothing irritating or offensive.

The wide range of subject matter means there is something for everyone in this book. I gave it four stars, mainly because it doesn't contain more of the type of work I'm interested in. But if I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. It works great as reference material and is a good addition to any digital artists collection.

Book Description

Martin Venezky is not your typical point-and-click designer. While he is adept at operating a mouse, he is just as comfortable cutting and pasting type from old books or collaging found signs or making his own photographs. What results are the unique creations of a unique eye. And with this eye and his design firm, Appetite Engineers, Venezky has created beautiful and influential work for Speak and Open magazines, the Sundance Film Festival, Reebok, and numerous publishers and institutions.
It Is Beautiful...Then Gone presents Venzky's commercial design work as well as new graphic work created for the book; details of the wall collage that define his office and his aesthetic; the singular photography, collections, and notebooks that define his personality; and text that explains -- or at least questions -- it all. Venezky's philosophy that life and design are a continuation of each other permeates this elegant book filled with hundreds of idiosyncratic, deeply wrought examples.

Martin Venezky's It Is Beautiful Then Gone (1568984561, $40.00) provides an unusual artistic approach: Venezky hones 'Slow Design', using raw materials and old design tools of collage and cut-and-paste to create an artwork which will intentionally age and decay over time. By this process, Martin Venezky maintains, the art evolves and changes and the artist develops a closer connection with the tool over the machine. It Is Beautiful...then Gone provides his commercial design work plus new graphics created just for this book: some 700 images in all.

from the very first opening of the cover you know its gonna be a high-classmagazine cover book. It features new artists, and old, with very rich photos and informative captions on many. Very rich color, so rich you forget you're looking at a book on magazine covers. Features Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson, Green Day, Hole, Nirvana, the Wallflowers (hense the back) and more for those who like the artists. Others such as Elvis, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan (hense the cover) and Sharon Stone, exploring all the intimate stories behind some of the MOST famous covers. Documents every, or almost every cover in the history of the infamous Rolling Stone Magazine in their run. An essential for cultural info buffs and makes a nice present.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Covers.......2001-11-28

The covers of Rolling Stone Magazine have been controversial, memorable and are a marker for musicians that they have made it. Some covers have created a stir such as a teenage Britney Spears posing in a provocative outfit, a topless Janet Jackson with a pair of male hands covering her and the last photograph session of John Lennon in which he is naked on a bed next to a fully clothed Yoko Ono. Most of the covers are simple photographs of everyone from Bob Dylan to Richard Nixon and even Dr. Hook who sang a song called "Cover Of The Rolling Stone", but they are some of the best works by the some of the best photographers in business like Annie Leibovitz and Herb Ritts.

4 out of 5 stars Rock'n'Roll in graphical historical detail.......2001-10-21

This book is a virtual history of American rock'n'roll. Each cover says something about the times, such as the now rather melancholy shot of Nirvana, form early 1994, on the verge of a huge comeback, just months before Kurt Cobain shot himself, or Annie Leibovitz's moody 1971 study of John Lennon, then deeply into his Working Class Hero phase. Rock'n'roll stars compete for cover space with politicians and film stars, depending upon what the issue or the hot stuff of the day was - Warren Beatty and Jerry Falwell both feature in political and pop-cultural contexts (the shot of Beatty is from 1975, when he was promoting Shampoo, a film set just days before the Kennedy assassination) and the text is sprinkled with plenty of choice quotes form both camps, making this a book to be slowly savoured for its pictorial and historical content time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2001-10-19

Seeing many of the covers again (I was a subscriber in the seventies) is like going back in time - and seeing many of the covers for the first time makes me wonder why I stopped being a subscriber.
I bought this book after having seen an exhibition of Annie Leibovitz, and to me she is still one of the greatest.

4 out of 5 stars A little more than a coffee table book, in fact.......2001-09-07

The book is a graphical historical document, showing all the covers from Rolling Stone magazine until the time of its edition. It could be argued that this is nothing more than a marketing gimmick to leverage off the work of photographers of the stature of Annie Leibovitz. But in fact, just like the Rolling Stone magazine has been since its beginning, this is about the history of music since 1967 until 1997. The deaths and triumphs of everyone are in it: Morrison, Hendrix, Lennon, Cobain, alongside Madonna, U2 and all your favorite stars.

Book Description

Legendary Harper's Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch had a favorite saying: "Why to eat bacon and eggs every day?" The designers at San Francisco-based design firm Cahan & Associates, in their hunger for fresh ideas, find inspiration in the most unexpected places, such as an oddly sculptural piece of discarded metal in the alley near their office, or a conversation with an elaborately tattooed bicycle messenger. From these eclectic ingredients the office serves up in-your-face graphics that are exceptional for their visceral impact yet still convey the strategic thinking behind each piece.
The firm's working methods, involving extensive exploration, collaborations, and play, are documented in this monograph through interviews with found Bill Cahan, clients, and vendors; writings by colleagues; photo essays; proposals to clients that were accepted and rejected; and finished pieces, providing a portrait of a firm for whom process is just as important as product.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Informative and insightful.......2003-09-10

I found the book to be extremely enlightening. Really getting into the process and the approach of the firm was awesome. Not the most eye catching book but for content, it was phenomenal. Preaching concept, communication and being open-minded, the book really reinforces those strong ideas in graphic design. It's definitely not for everyone, but I strongly recommend it to designers who strive to do great work that has a purpose and communicates.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious Waste of Paper.......2001-08-26

...If you want inspiration get DesignAgent or SoakWaskRinseSpin. I'm not sure what these guys were thinking. It has twelve pages of code, about 30 pages of one word written in different colors. There is hardly any real design. Just a waste of paper. It's not even artsy in a good way. Sorry to be so harsh. But it's not even a good coffee table book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2001-06-18

I ordered this book and promptly returned it. Normally, I am a fan of Cahan's work, but this was nothing like the clean, intuitive style I have grown accustomed to seeing from his office. And, that is not to say change is not good. It just so happens, this one isn't.

5 out of 5 stars Between Flesh and Spirit.......2001-03-22

Pure genius. This design house's work transcends the merely informative...It approaches high art. The most stunning examples are the works for bio-tech firms which bring out the "soul" of these very esoteric groups by relating the scientific with the human, the pain with the patient, the successes with the tribulations...often on a single page with only a word and a picture or two

An ability to lock in a word with an image into a tight presentation makes their design a high form of conceptual art (with feeling, mind you) rivaling that of any "fine" artist/group from Bruce Nauman to the Situationalists.

If you want to see what "mere" graphic design can achieve, get this book before you buy yet another one about the "new typographers".

2 out of 5 stars Collage material.......2000-11-16

By itself, this book has no soul, but it's worth buying to appropriate from.

Perhaps the point of the book is that the firm works best in tandem with the client; without a client, there is no dynamism.

But, for the beauty of the images, the quality of its printing, its many papers and series, the book should be cut up, glued together and offered as the collaboration Cahan etc. thrive on.

    Book Description

In 1984 a radically new graphic design magazine set out to explore the as-yet-untapped and uncharted possibilities of Macintosh-generated graphic design. Boldly new and different, Emigre broke rules, opened eyes and earned its creators, Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko, cult status in the world of graphic design. After a decade of publishing, the jury is still out on Emigre. But now, thanks to this comprehensive 10-year retrospective, you can reach your own conclusions. Are Emigre's Mac-generated graphics important, influential and controversial…or just plain ugly? You decide. "The only people who have trouble reading Emigre are graphic designers who have been trained to make type clear. The rest of the world doesn't live in that purist atmosphere." —Chuck Byrne, Print Magazine, September 1992 Here gathered together for the first time, you'll find: Every Emigre cover ever issued A full catalog of over 80 Emigre typefaces Emigre's most striking editorial layouts Plus stimulating and provocative commentary from both Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko How has a magazine that prints just 7,000 copies managed to outrage so many graphic designers while inspiring so many others? The answer is in your hands.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful retrospective of Emigre type foundry.......2006-07-30

Nowadays it's hard to remember that there was ever a time that Emigre was considered shockingly radical. With the massive surge of alternative type foundries and indie type designers, it's pretty hard to think of Emigre as "indie" any more. Not to mention the huge success of their typeface Mason--slapped over so many album covers and print ads in the last thirteen years that it's become a pest font damn near approaching that of Cooper Black or Hobo. But Emigre WAS radical, as this book reminds us. And they did more than just start a revolution in computer designed type. Their real value was to reintroduce a kind of type-centric design renaissance that hadn't really been seen since Jan Tschichold's "The New Typography".

Emigre made typographic design solutions exciting again. They also taught me a great lesson--type is something to think about and rant about--it's not just window dressing to go around the art. Who needs to design around a photograph when with the right font and some imagination you can ditch the photo altogether and have something considerably more challenging?

Anyway, if you can't tell, I think pretty highly of this book and agree that every designer should keep a copy around. More importantly, I think design students should look at it to get an idea of what IS possible with type--not just Emigre type, but with a true typographic approach to design, which I think the Emigre style embodies.

The book is several years old now and evidently out of print. Still it's worth the trouble to buy a used copy as they pop up from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Book for Every Graphic Designer.......2003-07-24

The Emigre story traces the fascinating development of a magazine that introduced digital typography to the design world.

Rudy Vanderlans created Emigre in 1984, the year in which the the Macintosh computer changed graphic design and typography forever.

In its early years, the brilliant experimental type/design publication featured fonts designed Zuzana Licko, a pioneer in designing typefaces on the computer for the computer. Her early bitmap fonts, designed to be used on dot matrix printers, created an uproar in a design community that was already reeling from the drastic changes in typesetting and production methods. With the introduction of high res PostScript outline technology, Licko's designs became more sophisticated and designers began to appreciate the ability to design with typography in ways never thought possible.

This book traces the journey of digital type from shocking to mainstream and contains fascinating quotes from influential design professionals. Of special interest are many examples of the best work from the early Emigres, including all of the bold, memorable covers.

A must for every graphic design library.

2 out of 5 stars Strickly for typographers only.......2002-05-16

I think this book is a wonderfull thing for typofreaks and i recommend it full heartedly for any typographer out there.
As for the rest of us mortals in the design cummunity, i dont believe there anything of interest in this book ( or should i say - large notebook) because it has no 'eye candies' of any sort, printed in two colors (black and ochre), has too much text in it and in general- looks bad.

    5 out of 5 stars innovative.......1999-11-29

The emigre magazine in one book, is cool, a impresive book, with a great size, like a big magazine shows the innovative design of the rudy vanderlas magazine trough the years, is a lovely book, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars buy a bigger bookshelf for this one.......1998-03-17

Somewhat of a biased reviewer, I recommend this book to any person that loves typography and wants to see the results of tremendous creative forces within the field. Or, if you have wanted to do something for a long time but didn't think you could do it ... also recommended for you.

Over the course of the past 35 years, California-based fine art publisher Crown Point Press has established one of the finest reputations in the printmaking and publishing world. Founded by Kathan Brown, the press is most renowned for its innovative and experimental uses of the oldest and most traditional printmaking processes: etching and woodcut. Under Brown's direction, Crown Point's master printmakers have worked on an astonishingly broad array of projects, including those of John Cage, Tom Marioni, and Pat Steir. The press has also printed and published important minimalist and conceptual graphics, as well as editions by such painterly painters as Richard Diebenkorn, Francesco Clemente, and Helen Frankenthaler. More than 200 full-color, beautifully reproduced prints in this softcover volume document the entire history and development of Crown Point, confirming its unique and enduring contribution to the transformation of 20th-century printmaking.

    Book Description

Crown Point Press in San Francisco, founded in 1962 by Kathan Brown, is a world-renowned center of contemporary printmaking. It has published work by such major figures as Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Sol LeWitt, and Wayne Thiebaud, while bringing to attention prints by many younger artists, including April Gornik, Anish Kapoor, Eric Fischl, and Francesco Clemente. Crown Point Press is known for presenting social and political issues in a range of printmaking media, from hard- and soft-ground etching to drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco acquired the Crown Point Press archive in 1991. This collection of nearly 800 works contains one impression of every print the Press has ever produced. Also included are over 2000 working proofs and preparatory sketches. Now, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has organized an exhibition of these distinctive prints. Chronicling Crown Point Press's dedication to artistic quality and commitment to innovation in printmaking technique and subject matter, this book also presents Kathan Brown's notable contributions in transforming the printmaking landscape of the twentieth century.

    4 out of 5 stars A Record of Achievement.......2002-06-02

Crown Point Press is one of the leading American printer/publishers of original fine prints, emphasizing intaglio (etching) techniques (although at various periods it has also sponsored woodblock projects). This book is a celebration of 35 years (as of 1997) of printing at Crown Point, and consists of three essays, plus the catalogue of the exhibition that followed the acquisition of the Crown Point archive by the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco.

The first essay is a history of Crown Point Press, and particularly of the unique vision and direction given to the Press by its founder and first printer, Kathan Brown. Although occasionally tedious (as when it lapses into lists of the artists who worked at the Press during a particular period), this essay provides interesting discussions of Brown's evolving philosophy, her interactions with artists belonging to various art movements, the different goals of the artists, and so on. You also get a small glipse into the economics of print publishing.

The second and third essays were what I found most interesting. Karin Breuer shows how the working proofs contained in the Press's archive document the artist at work, and the very different working methods that can be effective for different artists. Steven Nash discusses the interrelationships between an artist's work in printmaking and his or her work in other media.

Two-thirds of the book is the exhibition catalogue, which shows the truly amazing breadth and quality of the work done at Crown Point over the years. Although Brown has had a particular affinity for Minimalist and Conceptual art, she has invited interesting artists across a wide spectrum of "isms" to work at the Press, and the list of participating artists reads like a "who's who" of American art in the second half of the 20th Century. Particularly significant artists at Crown Point have included Richard Diebenkorn, John Cage, Wayne Thiebaud and Sol LeWitt, all of whom are well represented in the catalogue.

This is certainly not a "how to" book, and it is probably still too soon to be able to look back and really say "yes, this artist or movement was significant," or "this Press made a difference in American art," or even "this is the lasting contribution made by the post-WWII resurgence in printmaking." This book provides an important record, however, of 35 years at one of the most important American printer/publishers, and as such makes it easier to think about these questions and begin to glimpse answers.
