After evaluating numerous franchising books, this one has been the most useful especially if you are looking to franchise your own restraunt. The content of the book more than pays for steep price.

Book Description
Experts predict that by the year 2000, an astounding 50 percent of all retail sales will pass through a franchise chain. Yet, for all its growing importance, the franchise phenomenon remains largely undocumented and poorly understood, with very little grounded insight available on the management challenges that chains face. Now, with his landmark book Franchise Organizations, Jeffrey Bradach fills this void with a penetrating look at the key factors that shape a franchise's success. Using compelling examples from major restaurant chains, including KFC, Pizza Hut, Hardee's, and Jack in the Box, Bradach extracts the ingredients that make for a thriving enterprise. Clear and engaging, this is essential reading for understanding and managing today's franchise business.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and insightful........2006-04-08
Bradach looks at organizational issues and challenges as they relate to franchise organizations. He particularly focuses on fast food franchises which have a combination of company-owned and franchise restaurants.
He posits the four key challenges of the franchise organization as being:
Adding units
Uniformity
Local responsiveness
Systemwide adaptation
Most of the book addresses how the dual structure of companies with both company-owned and franchise restaurants assists with meeting these challenges. Bradach pays particular attention to the phenomenon of multi-unit franchisees.
Franchise Organizations was exactly what I was looking for in terms of the breadth and depth of knowledge. Bradach writes well, without pretension or overly-academic jargon. The book is bound with three appendices which cover the literature on owning or franchising, the design of Bradach's research, and the role of the field visit.
Recommended for other potential readers with an interest in the area.
Need better research design and deduction.......2002-12-05
This book was written by Dr.Bradach in 1997 but it stills a good reference today.
The comment I have, however, would be the research design is too limited. The research was conducted based on "food resturant chain" but the deduction (including the book title) seems to cover every franchise business. Is it possible that the research results for restuarant business only? We don't know. The research validation of the author still questionable to me.
The selected companies are too subjective, still. Several questions raised while I read the book about other franchise companies that the author didn't select. Although the author indicate three criteria (see research design of the book) to conduct the research, there is no mention to other companies that the author didn't choose.
This book is quite comprehensive but it can be one of the best reference book if the author go more detail (and change the title) for food restuarant business and add more detail about his research design.
Overdone.......2002-09-28
This book has a lot of good information but is buried within very long-winded writing.
MILLENNIUM MARVEL.......2000-06-27
THE BOOK IS A SYNTHESIS OF THE EXACT CORE ISSUES OF FRANCHISING IN AN ENLARGED BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AND IS HELPFUL FOR ORGANISATIONS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE WHO WISH TO ESTABLISH THE CHAIN THROUGH FRANCHISING. THE CASE LAWS REFERENCES COULD BE APPROPRIATELY GEARED UP AS EVERY BUSINESS HAS THESE FOCUSSES DESPITE OTHER ISSUES SUCH AS FINANCE, MARKETING, TECHNICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL.
Very informative and well researched.......2000-01-08
Great in depth research is what first striked me about this book. It has a focus on the restaurant franchise business, with 5 successful examples from the US. The book explains a lot about the details of the organizational work done in the franchise business. I have come up with a useful insight on the whole matter. It is a well written thoroughly researched book and at the same time interesting to read, with chapters and parts divided nicely if you want to go back and forth between subjects. Although I own an non-restaurant franchise, this book helped me understand how the system works and what I should expect from my franchisor in some managerial aspects. I would highly recommend it if you own or think about owning a restaurant franchise, or any other franchise for that matter.

GREAT BOOK!.......2007-10-11
I've lived in Austin for about 6 years and honestly didn't think I'd find too many new gems in this book. I was wrong!!!! I found a few of my favorite restaurants and stores, but now have a new list of places to hit. So far I haven't been disappointed and can't wait to try the guides for other cities.
Insider's guide to Austin.......2006-02-14
This book is witty, informative & right on target. It lists all the best places to eat & shop in Austin in an appealing one-page format with tantalizing photographs. Makes you want to get out there & visit each & every place!
Fun, Interesting, Motivating!.......2006-01-22
I love, love, love this book. As a new resident of Austin, I have no idea where to shop, eat or do anything else. And this book gives you such great ideas about what to do, where to go and what you'll find when you get there. There are so many great-looking restaurants and shops in this book. I can't wait to start exploring them. The style of writing and the photos add a lot to this great book. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
Discover the bygone city of Mark Twain and Stanford White, Harry Houdini and Edith Wharton in the venerable shops and restaurants that have served discriminating New Yorkers for generations. In Old World dining rooms, gaslit saloons, at jewelers, tobacconists, apothecaries, and more, these are the establishments that have endured by offering highly desirable goods and dining experiences. Visit the tavern where George Washington bade farewell to his troops, the haberdashery where Abe Lincoln traded in his backwoods cap for a more distinguished stovepipe hat, the Lower East Side delis, the coffee merchants of Greenwich Village, the purveyors of riding boots, andirons, brass beds, and nautical charts. From world-famous department stores to humble pasta-makers, this volume is a charming and useful guide to the living landmarks of New York.
Customer Reviews:
Not as Expected.......2007-04-02
The title is misleading. Only the existing businesses are reviewed, not those of noteworthiness that are no longer around but have a place in New York City's history. The book is a pocket edition with the briefest histories, I read the entire book in less than an hour! For the Amazon price of about $11 it was not worth the cost to return it.
Handiest book for history lovers.......2006-05-31
I'm fascinated with the history of New York, and I love the Victorian and Edwardian eras in the city's perspective. This book is packed with great stories about the founders of the said shops and restaurants, quick business histories and what to look for once inside the joint.
Makes an original and very thoughtful gift, and is a great addition to any New York lover's library.
A great book for New Yorkers!.......2002-12-12
I am a native New Yorker who has spent the past five years living in other cities, and being a little homesick, I still read the New York Times every day.
As I was reading the morning paper, I found an ad for this book, ordered it, and immediately fell in love with it! It is beuatifully laid out and wonderfully written. What's more, I always thought that I knew a ton about the city, but I learned so much from reading this book -- I had no idea that some of the restaurants and shops reviewed in the novel were so old. I also read about some really interesting places that I had never heard of.
I plan to give this book as a holiday gift to all of my fellow New Yorker friends -- both to those who are far away from the city they love, and to those who are right at home!
Even New Yorkers Need This Book!.......2002-09-07
New York can be a shopping paradise or shopping hell. One thing that anyone can always use is a real New Yorker to guide one through the city. That's what this book is. It's like having a best friend show you the way around, to the best places, the best shops you don't find in travel guides or online.
As a former New Yorker, this book took me back to the streets, the way it is to really experience it -- on foot, not from a taxicab or a rental car. The authors clearly know their way around. From bargains to classics to places just full of colourful history and anecdotes, it's a holiday guide for more than just shoppers. In fact, even New Yorkers will benefit from the pages of info, presented in a fun-filled, rewarding style. There are places I'd gone to for years and yet never knew so much about until reading this book. In fact, it's so much fun, it's like a weekend in New York. Okay, maybe not, but it sure will make you want to get there.
Now if we could only get one like this for Los Angeles... Oops, wait, that's impossible. I think I'm just missing New York...

This guy knows what he's talking about........2007-05-22
Gerry Frank is a local boy (Portland, OR) and keeps us informed about where to go in Oregon, but he also knows "all the right stuff" about New York. He is definitely a man to follow when it comes to finding a great restaurant and more.
Overrated.......2006-10-08
We bought an early edition of this book, and have found it wanting. Yes, there were some good shopping recommendations. But the ratings for restaurants and many other points of interest are just not that good.
The Blue Guide to New York is a much better bet, for my money, particularly given the book's inclusion of establishments long closed--or destroyed by terrorists.
My Bible for every trip to NYC.......2006-05-23
The 'List by Item' at the front of the store and restaurant chapters is invaluable. The boxed tidbits make this guide book easier and more enjoyable to read. With the changing of NYC the author's suggestion of calling a business before a visit sure makes sense.
gerry frank's new york.......2006-03-03
fantastic book for anyone visiting or living in NYC. the only drawbacks are (1) the absence of any subway map and (2) use of the index to refer back to specific items in the book itself i,e, it's all in there, you just have to work to find it.
Gerry Frank's where to find it, buy it, eat it in New York.......2006-01-15
I purchased the 2006-2007 edition of the book and am shocked to discover that it still includes New York's Finest French Cleaners & Tailors, three gnerations of the same family operating this quality business. The author hasn't bothered to update this edition. The business was sold to Orientals 2 years ago and service is no longer acceptable. The author has absolutely no credibility with regard to anything else listed in the book. I could list many more entries that are invalid. I guess all he does is slap a new cover on the book. This tells you all you need to know about the reliability of this guide - and the ethics of its author.

Disappointed.......2006-08-29
I purchased this book in hopes of finding many of the toys that I collected when I was a child. Many of the toys I have are from the early 1980's. A cursory glance did not show many toys before 1988. Astrosniks weren't even included, and they were quite popular! I'll be searching for a book that focuses on toys from the 1980's. If you're looking for a book that has toys from the early days, this is not the book for you.
An IDEAL McDonald's Collectibles Book!.......2000-02-07
This is one of the best McDonald's collectibles books I've seen! This book includes detailed color pictures, very accurate descriptions, release dates, and an estimated value for a wide variety of McDonald's figures including premuims released in the United States and Internationally. A very thorough and informative guide to McDonald's fast food toys!
You gotta look at this book! It's got all the toys from 1970.......1999-06-22
I love this book. I looked at this book in a bookstore. This books has all the toys from 1970 to 1997. I aslo love eating at McDonalds.
MORE GRIMACE!!!.......1999-02-26
Good book, although they could devote a whole volume to Grimace
Most definitive McDonald's Collecting Book.......1998-08-06
This book is for all, not just those who collect McDonald's memorabilia. My son loves to look at all the pictures and it is excellent to see all the different sets of toys, cause you can never usually get all the happy meal toys of a series. I highly recommend it!!!

Great for people with interest in fast food toy collecting........1997-11-21
This was my first book that got me started with fast food toy collecting. Its got hundreds of full-color pictures of many of the entire series of fast food collectibles from all the major restaurants, as well as plush toys, a foreign toy section, and index. It comes complete with price ranges, manufacturer markings, restaurant, name, and year (from the late 70s to some of 1996) as well as a spot to annotate the toys you own. This book is a must for any collector! John Gaska, Prattville AL.
