1 out of 5 stars Not that great a resource.......2007-03-28

I am a firm believer that cookbooks should remain in the kitchen. This book did not really provide me with any new recipes of use. The one recipe I did want to use for a client operation, I resourced the online materials and followed it through but was unable to have it turn out. If the experiment was a cake, it would have been in the compost bin.

Most of the book is taken up with two page layouts that show you how different effects work. Well I have been pretty familiar with the graphic pen filter for a long time, so most of the book which touched on those was wasted pulp.

There was nothing here that really wowed me about either the work, the layout or the subject matter. Maybe a first entry user of Photoshop might find it interesting , but I can't really recommend this title to a serious Photoshop user. I couldn't even give this book away at my user group meeting.

2 out of 5 stars If you know photoshop...you know most of this stuff in the book.......2007-03-04

Just a pretty rehash of photoshop filters and effects.
Skip it if you know photoshop
If you don't and like big picture learning this will teach you effects...but it won't teach you photoshop.

5 out of 5 stars Next Level of Photoshop Artistic Quality.......2007-01-10

I have been Fooling around with Photoshop-CS2 for years, i have been able to produce Amazing Effects. Many of my greatest Photoshops were done by Accident, because i wasn't sure were to start or in what direction to go in. I got this book and right away i saw some i have done but wasn't sure how i did it. Plus they have Tons of other effects you can do, by the time your done you will have Museam Quality Photos. Most people will ask you to do Photos for them to hang up in there house as a Center Piece.

5 out of 5 stars I use this book all the time..........2006-11-12

This is a great book that gives you well laid out instructions with invaluable visual aids throughout the book. I am constantly referencing this book for tips and techniques, and I have also combined many of the different areas I have learned into new effects. I would certainly recommend this book if you are looking for usefull tutorials that you can use in our work on a regular basis.. The best part is, this book is helpful for everyone from the beginner, to novice, to advanced users.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies.......2006-09-10

Like everyone else who rated this book, I would've given it five stars for all the stated reasons if I had been using Photoshop for a year or so.

Unfortunately, the author is an expert and assumes everybody who reads the detailed instructions in the book knows exactly what he is talking about. Apparently, he only had experienced Photoshoppers review or try to follow his instructions prior to publication. Thus, it can be a very frustrating experience for a newbie to try to duplicate projects presented in the book. (If the book was designed to be a cookbook, then it should contain detailed fool-proof instructions and avoid statements and/or instructions that only experienced Photoshoppers understand.)

It is a shame because, with just a little bit of extra work, this would've been an absolute must-buy for anyone whether they were experienced Photoshoppers or had just bought their first copy of CS2.

I'm sure the author is thinking "I can't make the instructions any more clearer than what is in the book." If the author is preparing another book, I suggest that he submit his instructions to a few newbies to determine if they can duplicate every project without tearing their hair out.

I'll bet they can't.

1 out of 5 stars As a photographer it was..... disappointing.......2007-01-12

Maybe graphic designers will like it but I did not find the images something I wanted look at. Made my head hurt. It is packed with a lot of filler: reasons the artist did what he did, what his favorite things are, and why this project was so so difficult for him.

5 out of 5 stars The best purchase I have made as a graphic designer-besides my computer.......2006-07-13

I work as a professional graphic design artist as well as a fine artist, and I have spent literally hours combing through the Photoshop how-to books in order to learn more innovative apporaches to the program.

Finding this book has made all of the work I have done to learn Photoshop worthwhile, and I really feel like it unleashed my ability to work with this program as an artist. Not only did it give me a ton of techniques to use when creating images, but I also turn to it whenever I have "artists-block" and just need to try something new. I began reading it when I was on vacation and I didn't even have a computer to work on, I was so intrigued by the thorough narrations of each artist explaining their unique techniques. The images really are stunning and tremendously multilayered; it was very exciting for me to learn new and unexpected ways to create images using Photoshop tools.

Seriously, this book has had a huge impact on my development as a graphic artist, and has allowed me to really expand as an artist in general.

2 out of 5 stars Just another dumb Photoshop Book.......2005-09-16

Ok this book is just another bla Photoshop book. Nothing great not nothing new that has not already been mentioned in other photoshop books

3 out of 5 stars Illustration Inspiration.......2005-06-23

Photoshop tennis anyone? In Photoshop Secrets twenty designers face off in ten different matches, two designers to a match. One designer starts an image through a combination of photo clips and Photoshop actions then passes it to another designer for the next "volley". Each match has ten volleys and produces ten completely unique images. These are images that fit the digital illustration genre. If you're looking for photorealistic techniques, check out one of Bert Monroy's books. How much you'll learn about Photoshop techniques certainly depends on your current knowledge level, but based on what I found this book will give you a few interesting things to try and, even more, a good bit of inspiration if you're interested in doing some professional illustration.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-10-07

I realize that it's subjective, but the images in this book are not "stunning". Many are a jumble bag of doodles and diddling. Some are interesting. Hidden in the "tennis plays" there are some tips on Photoshop image making, but it's difficult to consider looking for them because of the dreariness of the imagery. This book presents the case for me that it may be best to check these kinds of books out more (e.g, reviewing the pages available at Amazon or actually handling in a bookstore).

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Series.......2007-03-28

At the end of a long day of conference seminars, it is nice if they have a seminar that is more fun and informative rather than the heavy learning types. This book reminds me of that. A great read, but more from an intrest point of view. I didn't find too much to learn from here, but found with intrest, the techniques intriquing. It's refreshing to see how others go about using Photoshop to achieve an effect that I would have used a totally different approach on.

The subject matter and layouts are beautiful and well laid out, detailing the work of five great artists. Each section evokes the emotion of the work and guides you through the thought process to achieve the end point.

Great library read or a gift for that designer in your life. Priced a little high, but fits in the gift budget.

4.5/5

4 out of 5 stars A great addition to any artist and Photoshop users collection........2005-08-13

If like me you don't know anyone personally who happens to be a great artist and expert Photoshop user at the same time then you'll find a friend in this book. I've learned a few tips and it's great to know I've got them from such accomplished talent.

My only criticism of this book is that it is just not long enough. I'd have loved it to include a much larger spectrum of artists contributions thus divulging a great many more secrets that readers could make use of. A follow up title would be greatly welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Peek Over The Shoulder Of World-Class Artists.......2005-06-01

If you are a traditional artist considering incorporating your computer into your artistic repertoire, this book is a great starting point. Even if you have already discovered how helpful your computer is for creating artwork, you will find the techniques in this book will extend your digital skills. Although Adobe Photoshop is widely considered the industry standard in professional image editing and photo retouching software, this book is about using Photoshop as an art medium. In this book, part of the O'Reilly Designer's Notebook series, you will learn from and be inspired by nine world-class French artists who used Photoshop to create the featured artwork.

As you progress through the book, you will look over the shoulder of these artists as they discuss how they incorporated Photoshop into their artistic approach. The accompanying full color images show the progression of each artwork from start to finish. This is not a step-by-step instructional manual; instead the artists talk about how and why they used the Photoshop software to achieve certain results. After scanning in a pencil sketch or creating the beginning sketch with the digital pen and tablet, these artists used the layers feature in Photoshop to a great extent. By working with each element of the design on a separate layer, they found they where less limited artistically - nothing done digitally is irreversible.

The book doesn't concentrate on just one style of art. The nine artists chosen to be showcased in this book represent a wide range from childrens' book illustrator to video game artist. Bengal is a graphic novel designer and artist. Hippolyte, Joel Legars and Marguerite Sauvage are illustrators. Nicolas Bouvier is a video game artist and art director. Benjamin Carre is a book illustrator and game designer. Judith Darmont is a painter. Nicolas Fructus is a graphic novel artist. Antonie Quaresma is a layout artist, computer graphics designer and colorist. The book was originally published in French and was translated by William Rodarmor.

5 out of 5 stars A winner for Right Brain Artists.......2005-05-30

Take nine world class French digital artists, add Photoshop, a dash of good writing and a heady helping of creativity and you have "Illustrations with Photoshop". As a digital artist, I was intrigued by the title though suspicious. I was an Illustrator devotee but found limitations when it came to colorization. Photoshop is the means to unbelievable eye-poppin' illustrations. I've found most how-to design books to be bland, dry, deserts of left brain techno-babble. I was surprised to discover a full-color right brain revival of design and effect. The book itself is well designed and flows well over the glossy pages with artist notes and lots of pleasing images devoid of stark techno-structure. There is enough variety of art styles represented that it will appeal to most creatively inclined readers.

The contributors span the horizon of artistic endeavors. Video game designers, graphic novel artists, illustrators and a bona fide painter reveal artistic, inspirational photoshop insights elevating 2D illustrations to stunning art. Each artist selected one of their works and walked through their project from concept to completion. Included in the commentaries were not only the technical methods but the artistic motivation for each enhancement. The instructions are clear and very clever. They unveiled many of the mysterious and dubious filters and pallets that were once drop down menu baggage. The other bonus was the eye candy images and layout that illuminated each process and why they chose that direction. This was obviously a book by artists for artists that will fire the imagination and creative possibilities for our own art. It has some fantastic pointers but is not likely to be worth the price for the family photo retoucher who just wants to take the stain out of Aunt Mary's blouse. For the zealots of digital design and effects, it is an appetizing oasis and a must have for your library. Bravo to O'Reilly Books for an impressive winner.

4 out of 5 stars something that expresses the artist's creativity.......2005-01-28

Another book in O'Reilly's series on Photoshop, by a group of French artists. Directed at a user already proficient with Photoshop basics. The emphasis is on serious artwork. In this sense, it differs from standard Photoshop texts which tend to describe Photoshop usage in very mechanistic terms. Quite understandable, as it's the obvious way to explain a computer program's use.

But what this book aspires to is to suggest that you can rise above merely using Photoshop as a craftsman. Instead, it elevates Photostop to the tool of an artist. As an example, there is a chapter, Voyage to Porto. The author describes making traditional pencil sketches of Porto. Complemented by digital photos of the town. Then the bulk of the chapter goes into how these two media are integrated with Photoshop into something that is far more than just a digital photo. Something that expresses the artist's creativity.

    Book Description

It has been more than twenty years since desktop publishing reinvented design, and it's clear that there is a growing need for designers and artists to learn programming skills to fill the widening gap between their ideas and the capability of their purchased software. This book is an introduction to the concepts of computer programming within the context of the visual arts. It offers a comprehensive reference and text for Processing (www.processing.org), an open-source programming language that can be used by students, artists, designers, architects, researchers, and anyone who wants to program images, animation, and interactivity.

The ideas in Processing have been tested in classrooms, workshops, and arts institutions, including UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, New York University, and Harvard University. Tutorial units make up the bulk of the book and introduce the syntax and concepts of software (including variables, functions, and object-oriented programming), cover such topics as photography and drawing in relation to software, and feature many short, prototypical example programs with related images and explanations. More advanced professional projects from such domains as animation, performance, and typography are discussed in interviews with their creators. "Extensions" present concise introductions to further areas of investigation, including computer vision, sound, and electronics. Appendixes, references to other material, and a glossary contain additional technical details. Processing can be used by reading each unit in order, or by following each category from the beginning of the book to the end. The Processing software and all of the code presented can be downloaded and run for future exploration.

First - What's wrong Jaw Line? Did you not get accepted to Art Center or were you rejected by Industrial Light & Magic? You're not even a blip on the radar of these artists until you do something worth recognizing so please indicate where your book is on Amazon or keep your envious mouth shut.

Now, on to the review - The book is comprised of some of the better artists working in film and entertainment design today. Please keep in mind, this book is a nice reference tool for artists looking for a way to keep motivated and learn a few things along the way. I agree, there could have been more sketches and character development, but I'll take this for what it is - a pleasing reference tool for those of us who obviously haven't reached Jaw Line's impeccable talent.

    Enjoy the fine work.

2 out of 5 stars Putting the vanity in "vanity press"..........2007-03-20

You should definitely get this book if you want to learn how far self-promotion can take you. Or alternately, you could save your 30-some-odd bucks and just take this review to heart.

I bought the book to keep around as inspiration--printed out jpeg's just don't cut it and they don't last, right? I also bought it to check out what my competition was doing out on the Left Coast, sort of to light the fire under me.

    Well.

The book is printed nicely, and I felt that a lot of the text was pertinent and interesting. The images, though?

    Well.

The bulk of the book (the first part) is the seven LA guys showing off their work, and a lot of it. Some were pretty ok, but there are several guys who may be experienced, commercially viable pros, but whose work blows. I mainly found the best images to be in the "and friends" part, which is the second half of the book where various other guys get an image or two displayed.

There are some nice visual pauses that come from z-brush and sculpy images, but there are just too many instances of very high-tech high school art. There were no Craig Mullins, Dussos or Syd Meads in the bunch, it's safe to say.

So, take the tip: even if you suck or are abysmally average...promote, promote, promote--and one day, you too can get seen!

5 out of 5 stars Concept Design 2: Works from Seven Los Angeles Entertainment Designers And Seventeen Guest Artists.......2007-02-12

An interesting book as these artists are now moving on in their careers and we see the results of their work in film and other entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to any digital artist's collection........2006-09-07

I bought this book on a wim. The title and the size of the book led me to believe it would have some descent sized pictures and would be a good collection of original ideas. I wanted something that would inspire me to work harder on my own work. And that is exactly what I got.

I am quite pleased with this book. It is worth the price. There is a good variety of subjects, some that impress me, some that don't. But all the work is skillfully done. There is little in the way of artist comments or direction on how to achieve the effects they achieve, but that is the way I like it. This is more about the work. More text would mean less space for artwork. The artwork is mostly digital, however, there is an appropriate amount of sketches, too. The last few pages have information on the artists and their websites(if an artist has one).

I am disappointed there aren't more sketches or character designs. Most of the work is mechanical or environmental. It needed more character designs to balance it out, in my opinion.
There are some artists I didn't care for, subject matter I didn't care for(the concept cars for one), but nothing irritating or offensive.

The wide range of subject matter means there is something for everyone in this book. I gave it four stars, mainly because it doesn't contain more of the type of work I'm interested in. But if I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. It works great as reference material and is a good addition to any digital artists collection.

3 out of 5 stars Good and bad (and very bad).......2007-05-30

The book is simply comprised of 8 examples of work done by 8 different people working independently. You will quickly come to the conclusion that the only thing that most of the 8 "authors" were trying to do was to impress the reader on how technically proficient they are in using Photoshop, not necessarily showing the reader how to accomplish something. If this wasn't bad enough, the examples used were mostly very lame at best. To make matters worse, whatever they accomplished is now completely out-of-date as all examples were done in Photoshop 6, 7, or CS.

You may ask me "Why in hell did you buy the book?" The answer is simply: one of the 8 examples in the book is Thibault Granier's "Bloody Mallory" - a matte painting of an eerie abandoned church done for a low budget movie.

Although his Bloody Mallory tutorial is available on-line, I wanted a hard copy. The price of the used book was worth it.

      1 out of 5 stars Photo Retouching with Photoshop: A Designer's Notebook.......2006-08-15

This book is not what the cover appears to indicate - although ording online, it was the title more than the cover that attracted me to it. Sure it has some sections on restoration - which to me indidcates retouching, but a lot of it is about photo illustration.

Very well explained and well put together, this small book shows a good representation of some of the ways one can integrate photos that result in something that is nigh impossible in one shot alone.

The book covers restoration, body manipulation, sky and contrast fiddling, montages, photo art and commercial artwork. The problem with this book is each chapter is different from the rest. I see no need to have all of these together, rather split them up into an expanded book for each section. I had no intrest in the artwork of a photo illustration of a woman in the sky, but was interested in the body manipulation and the photo restoration. But each of those chapters were not detailed enough. You will run into many different situations and one photo or example is not enough.

More please - so I can select the titles that pertian to me. Its like putting fine cabinetry and house framing and boat building in the same book because you want to appeal to those with a saw as a tool instead of Photoshop as a tool. Photoshop is used in many different facits and never to the breadth by one that this book would like one to believe.

Limited appeal until its broken out into a series and added with more depth.

Title: Photo Retouching with Photoshop - A Designer's Notebook
Author: Demonstrated by Leading French Artists
      Translated: Marie-Laure Clec'h,
      Publisher: O'Reilly

This Designer Notebook is but one in a series, and having experienced this one first, it has piqued my interest in discovering the rest.

My Inner Geek (OK, I admit it, I wear my Geekness like my heart on my sleeve) enjoyed the inclusion of not only the software used to create certain effects and images, but the hardware as well. There's something satisfying in knowing one of the designers profiled probably took great pleasure in revealing the minutiae that they use a Gretagmacbeth Eye-one spectrophotometer to calibrate their display weekly. And I curse them, for now I must have one.

Emphasizing certain aspects of the artists' craft are simulated Post-It notes (do I use the "registered trademark" superscript here? - I think not - this is a local SIG, not the New York Times! - the Post-It attorneys may feel differently), an effective device that not only drives home a point, but enhances the casual yet sophisticated nature of the page layouts.

What sets this book apart from most is the multidisciplinary approach. Some authors are photographers, some retouchers, some designers - all are very talented, and present their methodologies in clear and cogent fashion. An immensely appealing concept, well-executed. I will definitely seek out additional Designer's Notebooks. As soon as my Gretagmacbeth comes in. I just love saying that.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Approach To The Usual.......2005-06-28

The title of this book is somewhat misleading. Photo retouching and Adobe Photoshop is not a new idea. Photoshop has been the industry standard for photo editing for years. However, what I liked the most about this book is that it was about more than the basic photo retouching covered in most books on Photoshop.

That being said, Eric Mahe discusses his approach for turning a photo into an artistic statement as opposed to just retouching the original photo. First, he reworks the too-white sky by replacing it with a sky from a second photo. He then isolates and enhances the subject of the photo, a little girl's face, using the Photoshop Calculations command.

Gerard Niemetzky worked on restoring a 100 year old photo. In his workshop, he discusses the scanning technique he uses to maintain the embossed aspect of a photo within a frame when converting it to a digital image. He also discusses the sequence of steps and adjustment layers he uses to make this very faded photo look almost like new.

Starting from a photo of an old church and graveyard, Thibaut Granier worked on a matte painting destined to be a backdrop for a movie scene. To achieve a haunted, eerie effect, he first replaced and then subdued the sky in the photo. Next he used a montage approach to build up the graveyard with individual grave markers. Each marker was added one at a time to the foreground of the picture and then manipulated to blend into the atmosphere of the photo.

As with all books in the O'Reilly Designer's Notebook series, each professional artist shares his or her expertise and artistic approach in a step-by-step workshop with accompanying full color examples that show the progressive steps to the final result.

The nine French artists featured in this book are Gerard Niemetzky, Dominique Legrand and Antony Legrand, Eric Mahe, Vincent Risacher, Francois Quinio, Thibaut Granier, Poisson Rouge and Cyril Bruneau. The book was originally published in French and was translated by Marie-Laure Clech from the original entitled Retouches Photo avec Photoshop - Les cahiers des Designers 05.

I was drawn to this book by its cover with an antique photo, which was then shown being restored in nicely illustrated and explained steps using Photoshop in the first chapter (called a "studio"). Surrounding each step of restoration are great tips from how to scan the photo, to what to restore, to how to do it including showing how to use various Photoshop tools. This is what I always wanted to have a book do: really illustrate every stage of photo restoration.

The following 7 chapters (also each called "studios") equally demonstrate with wonderful step-by-step illustrations more great things Photoshop can do to improve and enhance images. Each is written by a different French author who is a specialist in some aspect of Photoshop. In all, these additional "studios" are equally well done and help both the beginner and more advanced Photoshop user really gain valuable insights and skills into making Photoshop achieve its great potential.

      Cons in a few words:

I really don't have any major cons with this fine 96-page book. My only suggestions for improvement would be to add a glossary and index, so that the definitions of some terms could be found easier, plus topics located faster in the book.
