IS IT ME OR IS IT THEM?
Maintaining control in today's hectic workplace is a challenge -- everything is lean, competitive, and uncertain. What does it take to survive?
Making Work Work is Julie Morgenstern's most important book yet. Through the mastery of brand-new strategies, Morgenstern shows you how small changes in your thinking and behavior will help you achieve the seemingly impossible -- boost your value, increase your job security, and afford you the time to still have a life.
Morgenstern has helped clients of all levels take control of their work lives in every industry: from corporations and nonprofits to government agencies and small businesses; from executives and assistants to educators and salespeople. She's learned that no matter who you are, happiness at work involves feeling appreciated, in control, successful, and in balance. And achieving that is possible.
People rarely look at their jobs from a psychological and practical perspective at the same time, but Julie Morgenstern does. This book mirrors the individual consulting services she provides by showing you how to start with yourself and then tackle the more complex external issues of working relationships and the job. For every obstacle you encounter along the way, Morgenstern diagnoses the source of the problem (is it you or them?), and with insight and warmth, she provides simple grab-and-go strategies. These are small changes anyone can make to improve performance and efficiency at work.
At its core, Making Work Work is about your relationship to your job. With the reliable, methodical process taught in this book, you will:
feel less trapped and more in charge be able to make a bad situation better search for a job that's a better fit for who you are.
This is a provocative and life-changing book that will help you boost your clarity, confidence, and performance in any economic climate. With Morgenstern's guidance you can find a way to make work work.
Customer Reviews:
Morgenstern revolutionized our business.......2007-07-17
Nearly a year ago, I bought Never Check E-mail in the Morning and implemented the practices prescribed throughout the book into our busy real estate office. We were drowning in in our crazy workloads, and struggling under the pressure of always being available to our clients. With e-mail and BBs you can never turn off, especially in real estate where it's completely client-based. Morgenstern's techniques really revolutionized the way we did business and helped us to better manage clients' needs and our own sanity. Her strategies are so practical and address all the problems of working in a 24/7 global market. I definitely recommend it!
A different approach to organizing for efficiency.......2007-06-28
I read this book with some trepidation since I've read lots of organizing and efficiency books over the years. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this one, since it offers nine "competencies" that all should master, and number one is "Embracing your work/life balance". With this as the foundation, she builds all other competencies on this one. So, when discussing competency three (Choose the Most Important Tasks) or competency five (Control the Nibblers), they aren't described as in typical efficiency/organization books. Typically, these types of tasks are encouraged to allow us to 'get more done', but in this book, taking control of these types of issues is encouraged to allow us to achieve the ultimate goal of work/life balance, instead of making us more efficient cogs in the corporate wheel.
A nice approach, and well done.
Gave it away the next day.......2007-05-08
This book begins with a questionaire to rate your level of organization at work. I filled it out, scored it, and promptly donated it to my library. I am obviously more organized within my work environment than at home. Only buy this book if you are a mess at work and unable to complete projects on time.
Scrapple at Best.......2007-03-09
This book gushes of leftovers. It is a very wordy read and doesn't get to any practical sort of information until the latter half, most of which is not only a repeat of earlier books, but also common sense stuff (this coming from someone who doesn't instinct-wise have a firm grasp on time management) that i have gleaned from many other sources, and in a more concise format. although her other books are great, i don't recommend this one.
Disappointed. No useful advice........2006-11-07
I bought this book for myself, expecting to find some useful advice to help me organize my day a little better and to stay focused on priorities. I have been in management for 12 years and I expected this book to offer some new insights into time management and other daily challenges. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed and struggled to find some useful advice within the first half and have since put it down.
The book seems to target a junior audience with a certain type of personality that is more focused on fitting in and accommodating others, rather than those focused on leadership and results.
The book itself feels really cheap. I is printed on that cheap news-print paper like those crossword puzzle books.

Practical ideas that produce results.......2007-07-13
You won't get rich from simply reading a "How to Get Rich" book and you won't get organized and productive from just reading any book - you have to take action and implement the ideas.
I have used the principles and ideas outlined in "Getting Organized" for several years and found them to be extremely valuable.
Becoming more organized and productive is not a matter of what type of filing system or PDA you use, it involves making a habit of organized and productive behavior.
This book provides concrete tools for forming those habits. Simply outstanding!
a nice, integrated system.......2007-07-03
Crouch has some very solid ideas here, with practical applications. Worth looking at.

Look at the reviews carefully.......2007-05-10
I wish I would have looked at the reviews carefully before buying this piece of fluff! I now took the time to look at more than the gold stars and actually read those reviews, and it seems that 99.9% of them were written by people who have paid to have this author give seminars at their offices. I have a feeling they got a discount for each 5 star review they gave.
When you can't handle email or incoming/outgoing paperwork, no book OR seminar is going to help you ... perhaps your career path should begin with a McJob!
If you are looking for REAL organization books that apply to your home and office space, I suggest "Organizing From The Inside Out" and "Sink Reflections".
Will only be helpful for a few........2007-04-14
The book was NOT what I was expecting based on prior reviews. This is NOT a guide to life organizing and prioritizing but rather the author's idea of handling office incoming mail, a filing reminder system for phone calls to be made and work to be done, keeping things one needs to share with another individual in a central location, and scheduling and consolidating that sharing. For those who don't need a computer to do their job, have a memory like a sieve, or are super disorganized and don't know where to begin to start, this might be helpful, otherwise, save your money. His ideas are only practical in a low volume paperwork environment and with those who have non-technical professions. Some kind of portable, daily planner or calendar or a computer syncing PDA is much more practical.
Great Ideas to incorporate in everyday situations.......2007-03-18
Although the book was more concise than expected, I learned some values that I will always use. Recommend this book with its witty content.

New focus on clinical outcomes supports the latest innovations in evidence-based practice
Download Description
In its first two editions, The Clinical Documentation Sourcebook became recognized as the most comprehensive and useful practice management resource on the market. This Third Edition provides even more value, offering forms and documents for a broader array of client populations (including for the first time children, families and couples), as well as the full range of resources needed for compliance with the new HIPAA regulations. Redundancy is reduced from the previous editions, while integration of forms across sections is improved. Finally, the new focus on clinical outcomes supports the movement toward evidence-based practice in mental health.
Customer Reviews:
Below average software.......2007-10-06
The software does NOT work on an iMac. When used with Windows Vista, the forms are available to customize, however, they need streamlining and updating with regard to fonts, spacing, etc. The documents don't look as if they have been updated aesthetically since the first edition of the book. Disappointing.
The Clinical Documentation Sourcebook.......2007-07-12
This sourcebook is the best one I have found to assist with beginning a clinical practice and producing legal documentation.
A must have..........2006-11-10
This book was a life saver for me as I opened my solo practice this summer. Without it, I would have spent countless hours developing these forms myself. The feature that allows you to customize the forms is especially nice. I recommend this for new or veteran mental health workers.

Customer Reviews:
Incredible planning / problem solving tool.......2007-06-07
Really great reference book for identifying and solving problems, planning and information mapping. Takes several management systems and combines them in a practical, time-effective method for working individually or in teams.
Simple, but not simplistic.......2007-05-06
This book offers problem solving techniques that may be used well in the suggested sequence, and may be used independently, as well. And, of course, each technique employs Post-It Notes.
At first glance, it may seem that Straker's techniques are almost too simple -- simplistic. They are not. In fact, they reflect a deep understanding of the problem solving, and how to profitably involve groups in that process.
The book is short, well-organized, and clear. Reading it cover to cover won't take long and is time well spent. However, you can cherry pick his chapters and still benefit.
My partner and I recently introduced Straker's method (and book) to a client -- a Washington think tank. They were immediately able to reach faster, better solutions that included a broader range of input. They have become, in their words, "sticky note zealots." Well, me too.
Highly recommended.
Rapid Problem Solving with Post-It Notes (Purchased on 11/12/2006.......2007-01-11

Very good tool.......2006-11-07
This is an easy tool to follow the rules for problem solving. It has helped to reduce the time of response in hard difficult working situations. To maintain the level of usage, the students read it for present information in class in other ways, in more understandble way.
Constantly recommending this book to others.......2006-11-03
I'm the author of "Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative Thinking Techniques," and other books on creative thinking. As such, I read pretty much everything that's published that can be useful in facilitating creative thinking workshops and seminars. I find the ideas in this book fun, useful and extremely effective. I'm constantly recomending it to people looking for ways to become more creative in their personal and business lives.
Book Description
It can take hours to research family history and it is easy to become inundated with stuff - paper records, recordings, photographs, notes, artifacts, and more information than one would imagine could ever exist. The usefulness of the collection is in the organization - using computers, archival boxes, files, and forms to help you put your hands on what you need when you need it. Also included, in this book, are instructions on the best ways to store and preserve one-of-a-kind family relics.
Fifth in the National Genealogical Society's Guide series,
The Organized Family Historian will follow the same user-friendly format that makes the other books helpful at any level of genealogical experience. The NGS offers readers 100 years of research and experience.
Customer Reviews:
"Read, Do, Remember".......2007-05-13
When it comes to family research I cannot stress enough the need for it. Our generation is on the verge of losing our heritage and not passing it on to our children and grandchildren. Who we are is a direct result of who our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were. It takes so little time to write down names and birth dates. Trust me- it doesn't matter what your life was like growing up if you can't put it to paper and share it with someone you love. Even the bad things that may have happened don't change names and dates. Let your kids know where their grandparents came from. Let them know when their great-grandparents came to this country and WHY. Our ancestors left everything and started all over in a strange, new world. They did it for us. Don't ever forget and don't ever stop sharing. Use the tools in this book and put your information down and keep it for future generations. Utilize the knowledge of the genealogists that put this wonderful book together to help you achieve your goals. Catalog your treasures - even if they're not worth two cents. Money isn't everything - but the memories are.
The Organized Family Historian.......2007-05-12
I think this is a wonderful, helpful book for the beginning genealogist. I would have loved to have something like this when starting out. The inclusion of a CD rom with the forms makes the book worthwhile in its own. Each chapter really helps a new genealogist starting out to get organized. There are explanations of how to keep records and how to research. Anyone doing genealogy or teaching genealogy should have this on their bookshelf. The book even helps you get organized to write your family history.
The Organized Family Historian: How to File, Manage, and Protect Your Genealogical Research and Heirlooms (National Genealogical.......2007-01-17
This book is a great help in organizing the mass of data that appears when you do genealogy research. Also included is a CD with various forms for logging in those materials. Beside that, the book offers great ideas for internet use and other search help. I am a beginner and was pleased that the book offered help geared to my level as well as more advanced information. Well worth the price.
Beginner genealogists buy this book!.......2007-01-16
I wish I had purchased this book when it first came out. It would have saved me alot of time and effort. I did learn some new tricks however and find it valuable enough to keep near my desk. Well written and easy to understand.
Bits 'n Pieces are useful.......2006-04-07
I agree with Michael K Smith's in-depth review. My very short impression is: The book contains useful information, but it is short on hard advice. If you've never considered how to file information, this book would be very useful.
However, I consider myself to be very organized and logical but I keep coming across a roadblock of how to organize female ancestors. When the female is a fairly close relative, I manage to remember the maiden name and cross-reference it to the married name. But what do I do with female relatives more than two generations back? (my mental limit). I'm not great at remembering computer-generated reference numbers. (And, my computer is not always on.) I need a way to track females based on names. I did not find any helpful hints. Perhaps this is a roadblock for everyone. I can only say I was dissappointed as I believe this is a common problem. There should be a solution in a book claiming to help organize info.
I did like the section on heirlooms, although it is pretty much common sense.

Customer Reviews:
WONDERFUL !!.......2007-10-03
I am running a construction company and my basic mindset is functional business development. I recently purchased this Construction Operations Manual and I am extremely satisfied. The book almost perfectly addresses a wide array of issues, actually, it's phenomenal! It simply is a 'construction operations manual.' I have not read anything that would come close to this book in terms of running a practical construction company.
Furthermore, this is basic business development. In my opinion it is a balanced and structured way of creating and operating any business in general. Whether it be a construction, technology or scuba diving companies, these basic functional principles of running a business will not change. It is a fabulous book.
There is some room for improvement. The cd-rom with forms templates is fairly large and it forms facilitates many issues, however I personally have put together a compilation of templates 4x as large. Therefore, there is a way to create a better manual by adding more forms to the cd-rom.
Overall, i give the Construction Operations Manual two thumbs up, five stars and lots of support.
Just like buying a franchise.......2007-08-16
Most spend thousands in buying a franchise. This book has what you need to build a successful system yourself at much less cost.
Good but could be better.......2003-10-18
Author has huge experience in construction industry, but I expected something like a guideline - simple in structure, focused on essence. Topics are covered with plenty of words, could be simpler. However generally it is worth having this book.
Very good text.......1999-01-21
THe attached diskette did not contain all the forms and letters as so indicated by the author. THe author should verify the diskette before shipping. Other than that I thought the manual prove to be worth the purchase.

Great step-by-step guidance!.......2004-11-03
Because the books contains consise "To-Do lists" as well as flagged reminders of key organizing principles, it is easy to take the information from the book and apply it to each reader's own situation. Working as a professional organizer, I was able to utilize the information from the book to help my clients become less overwhelmed with all of their papers and stick to an organized bill paying system that works for them.
Organize Your Finances and Keep Them That Way!.......2004-10-27
This is an excellent guide that offers practical solutions to get your finances organized and keep them that way. Debbie Stanley's shining personality stands by the reader throughout the entire book as she offers a myriad of solutions to today's financial challenges. Her focus is on creating an organized, efficient financial system that works for you rather than you working for your system. The author emphasizes that even financial items need homes in order to manage financial clutter. Debbie offers recommendations for setting up financial files, automatic bill payment, financial software, daily mail, paper flow systems, and yes, even shopping excursions! The concept of being "organized enough" is stressed throughout as a pleasant reminder to keep it simple. This book is loaded with helpful tips, visuals and resources to help you save money, time, and frustration by creating a customized, efficient personal finance system. It's a "must have" book if you are ready to organize your personal finances and keep them that way!
Finally, an easy to follow book to organize your finanaces!.......2004-10-11
This book is great! I would have never guessed that a book on organizing finances would be fun to read, but this one is! It is easy to follow and is presented in a way that makes it quite simple to customize your own systems. In addition to all the wonderful financial advice (some which I did not even realize that I needed to know!), there is plenty of advice on organizing other area's of your life. For example, dealing with non-financial paper and clutter like magazine articles and catalogs. My favorite is the "room-by-room" files. They work awesome!
Every young person or couple just starting out should have this book! I'll be giving it for bridal shower gifts from now on!

Customer Reviews:
A bit disappointed.......2004-09-13
I was so excited for this book to come! I couldn't wait to read it. I have to admit that now after reading it, I am a bit disappointed. While it is quick and easy to read some of the information is extremely basic and elementary and I considered about half of the book to be a waste of my time (but hey, what's 25 minutes in the grand scheme of things?). I did however find some of the tips very helpful and practical. For instance, the book helped me recognize situations when it's okay to throw things away, something I never do. Overall, a good read with some helpful ideas. Just be prepared to skip over the stuff that you already know, and be able to apply the general deatils to your specific needs.
Quick Start.......2002-07-20
I was able to read this book in one night and still had time to make a game plan for tackling the organization project at the office for the next morning. There were a few ideas that were easy to implement; some so simple I can't believe I never thought of them before. (The Tickler Files!) After two work days, I had changed my work process enough to feel better, and thus have some relief. Not to mention, on day two, my director stopped mid-sentance when she saw the top of my desk and praised me for how clean and organized I was.
This book is a great place to start for some easy, immediate results. However, I need much, much more on PDA's, e-mail, case management, and paperwork flow. The success I had from the small investment of time here will keep me motivated to move on to books tackling the larger picture.
Great book to get you started.......2001-09-30
I was totally disorganized and swamped with paper everywhere. This book was one of 3 I bought and was the first one I read. It is easy to read and follow, and it brought order and gave me confidence to start my umpteenth effort to get organized. Absolutely recommend it to anyone who is in need of a kick start to getting organized.
Practical and simple to follow methods.......2000-09-04
This book is well organized. It offers practical and simple to follow methods. If you don't want to spend a lot of time reading, but to take action getting organized, this is the book to read.
Immensely practical; a one-time life experience.......1998-10-03
I ran into the first edition of Oganizing Your Workspace at a time when I needed to get my work habits reorganized. It was full of very simple, almost obvious suggestions on how to get out of grid lock, and how work in a focused way. It takes some "humility" for a "seasoned executive" to read through a book like this, but for me it paid off many times over.

Everyone hates the paperwork, but it's got to get done.......2006-02-28
The Organized Executive covers four topics dedicated to managing paperwork, tasks, time and staff. It specifically gives guidelines on planning one's day and setting priorities. It gives scheduling advice and a perspective on how to avoid time wasters. Staff problems from delegation to staff, expectations of staff, and management of staff is covered. The section on managing paperwork is covered first and provides a system for managing paperwork.
"The key to paper management is processing: that is, channeling each piece from your in-box to its appropriate destination." Learning a system that handles paperwork efficiently will result in greater accomplishments, more enjoyment from work, and result in spending fewer hours with paperwork.
Learn the TRAF technique to properly manage paperwork. The first rule in TRAF, before you can use this system, is to READ THE PAPERWORK. Use the following technique on every single piece of paperwork:
TOSS: "Man's best friend, aside from a dog, is the wastebasket," says Business Week. Ask yourself, "What is the worst thing that can happen if I toss this out?
REFER: Delegate paperwork to a staffer or others that are more qualified or trained to deal with the paperwork. Follow-up on paperwork that you delegate.
ACT: Use an action folder to ensure that items that need attention are together in one location. Later, this folder can be prioritized.
FILE: For items that can not be delegated or require action, but can not be discarded immediately, should be filed. Mark this filed paperwork with a discard date to know when the paperwork can be successfully tossed.
Sound suggestions; actual read takes effort.......2005-05-25
The 1980s book is continually updated. Stephanie Winston, also author of Getting Organized, presents a wealth of ideas for managing time, paper, and people more effectively. While she offers sound time- and task-management skills such as "the art of organization," "effective filing techniques," and other ways to promote efficiency, the book is packed with charts, exhibits, and "systems" and hence requires energetic readers.
It does not address the mental/spiritual aspects of staying organized and in control -- something readers want and, more importantly, need.
A Classic Text, Superficially Updated.......2003-03-28
The cover claims that the book has been "revised and updated for the digital age," but Winston's information on technological tools is both superficial and already dated. The term, "PDA," does not even appear in the index.

A life changing book!.......2007-01-12
This CD complements the book of the same title and is changing my life. Julie Morgenstern has taken me from someone that can't find anything in the mess to someone that can clean the whole house in 20 minutes with her book "Organizing from the Inside Out". Now she is helping me release that person that can't get anything done to someone that accomplishes the most important things daily with her book "Making Work Work". I cannot express my thanks appropriately. The words are not in the dictionary.
INSIDE OUT... works.......2005-10-26
