Book Description
Most of us know him as one member of the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but what you may not know is that at the same time Graham Nash was rocking the world, he was also pursuing a parallel career in photography and digital imaging. Nash Editions—the world’s premier fine-art digital printmaking studio, which Graham co-founded with R. Mac Holbert—represents the pinnacle of those efforts. This book uses thought-provoking essays and glorious artwork to sum up not only Nash Editions’ achievements but also the state of fine-art digital printmaking. After a brief history of printmaking, you’ll reach the heart of the book: an essay by Holbert on the genesis of Nash Editions and fine-art digital printing (which details the studio's interactions with major artists like David Hockney); an essay by MoMA consultant Henry Wilhelm (which includes a technical comparison of traditionally and digitally prepared prints); and commentary from Nash Editions artists. The book’s more than 100 illustrations include Nash Editions artwork, photos of artists in the studio, images of the machines used in digital printing, and illustrations of the proofing process.

history.......2007-10-10
The history of digital photography has twists and turns, and the Nash Editions book gives us a record of some of the key events. Worth reading, and the images are splendid.
Inspiration Through Examples and History .......2007-06-16
With respect to the nature of this book's content and message Eric Burrows' review title hit the nail on the bean: "Not how to do it but how it happened". Don't buy this book with the expectation of learning technical tricks for printing. Rather, "Nash Editions; Photography and the Art of Digital Printing" is a retrospective look at the pathfinding inkjet printing work of Mac Holbert and Graham Nash. The book actually consists of several essays by various authors, including Mr. Archival Permanence himself, Henry Wilhelm.
I found this book to be a fascinating stroll down the relatively short (to-date) path of fine art inkjet printing. But I also found it strangely inspiring. After spending a couple of hours with this book I felt compelled to devote even more effort to my own printing.
A must have book, but ..........2007-06-14
Nash Editions deserves all credit for kick starting the fine-art/inkjet revolution but I'm not sure this book adds much to what is already well known. For sure there's lot of great images herein, but the presentation is a bit sloppy. We hear the same story over again from multiple participants and (in my copy at least) the more interesting narration from Holbert ends mid sentence. If you're interested in the history of the inkjet, this is a book you'll have to have but the lack of care/thought in its presentation does seem a little like exploitation.
High expectations.......2007-05-06
Just a few years ago the terms "art" and "inkjet print" weren't tolerated in communal context. Now, as with many media evolutions, sensibilities have to a large degree changed. One of the forces instrumental in altering the art community's entrenched mindset against the inkjet process has been a small digital fine-art inkjet photography studio by the name of Nash Editions. Through the collaborative pioneering of a handful of deep-pocketed, influential, and very determined artistic entrepreneurs, Nash Editions helped develop, refine, and establish broad acceptance for the digital fine-art inkjet printing. This is their story.
At first blush this lavishly printed (and expensive) book promises a consuming elegance that sweeps you away. It has star power too, with one of the leading personalities none other than Graham Nash of Crosby, Still & Nash fame. It also includes rich and very personal histories of the birth and labored growth of the digital printing service company, of permanence in various photographic media, and of photography itself as a medium of expression. The book also includes images by a broad selection of visual artists spread throughout in an eclectic smorgasbord.
But there are a few elements that detract somewhat from the book's rich objectives. With several authors contributing, certain parts of the story get repeated - several times in fact - and the tone at times begins to sound slightly obsequious and self-lauding, to the point that one is led to the impression that Nash Editions (the company) was pretty much the sole entity that dragged digital printing from practically nothing in the early 1990s to it's high level of sophistication and acceptance today. While Nash Editions can certainly claim historic "firsts" in several categories within the digital printing revolution, a thoughtful person might wonder if there weren't just a few other significant contemporaries working toward the same goals. And on a purely technical note, one of the sections of the book ends in the middle of a paragraph, leaving the reader guessing as to the intended conclusion; perhaps a little tighter editing would have been helpful.
So, should you buy this book? Yes, if you're a photographic artist interested in the history of the digital printing process or the concept and science of photographic media permanence. And of course it will serve too as visual stimulation and a contemporary two-dimensional artwork study; one can learn a great deal by looking carefully at other artist's work.
Not how to do it but how it happened.......2007-03-31
Although I knew roughly of Graham Nash's involvement in the early days of digital printing I did not know the detail. Having been fooling around with digital printing about as long as Nash, but without his money or expertise, I found the book fascinating. This book will not tell you how to get the best print, but it does tell the story of the people who had the vision and knowledge to start it all off. A good read with some good essays by photographers who were involved. I think that it is a worthwhile addition to my photographic library. An eye opener to those who just push the button and a good print comes out.

Book Description
Tim Rudman's first book on lith printing, a specialized method of photographic printing that produces strongly graphic or exquisitely delicate prints, is the canonical work on the subject. Inevitably, since it was first published in1998 there have been significant developments in both materials and techniques for traditional-lith printing, as well as the introduction of digital methods, used to simulate the process or expand its creative potential.
Now Rudman follows his classic text with an insightful and informative exploration of lith printing today. In addition to his own work, he includes many examples by leading practitioners from all over the world, who show the whole range of effects that can be achieved by adopting a wide variety of different approaches.
Book Description
Spotlights "green" technology, safe for all artists Distinguished author has worked with Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, Romare Bearden, and other top artists Techniques range from the traditional hands-on to the latest in digital screenprinting
For many years, screenprinting was oil-basedand presented significant health risks even as it damaged the environment. Today, fortunately, screenprinting has shifted to water-based technologies. Now Roni Henning, a leading expert on screenprinting, offers her tips and techniques for getting the most out of these safer, "greener" water-based methods ranging from the traditional hands-on methods to the latest digital technology. She explains separations and color correcting, then discusses the artist-printmaker collaboration, giving intriguing examples from her own work with such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, and Romare Bearden. Henning also offers step-by-step instructions for monoprinting, her own direct-to-screen watercolor process. Illustrated with glowing examples of the printmaking medium, including works by Bearden, Jack Youngerman, Gene Davis, and Elizabeth Osbourne, this is the definitive work on an increasingly popular art.
Customer Reviews:
The author works "with you" and doesn't talk "down to you".......2007-08-16
If you are a curious person, interested in learning the art of silk screening, in as direct of an approach as possible, I personally feel that this books author does a great job of articulating her theories and principals in a very user friendly fashion.
The above sentence is an example of how most technical books would use the English language to make the readers brain ache . . .
If you are curious about silk-screening, I think the author of this book does a great job of explaining things in a clear and understandable way.
The above sentence is an example of how I felt as I made my way through Roni Henning's latest book, "Water-Based Screen-printing Today".
Having had the privilege of actually attending a function honoring Roni Henning's artistic works, and having the pleasure of speaking to her in person, I have to say I walked away with the impression that the author is truly passionate about "teaching".
She has a special, "down to earth" air about her, like most artists, yet she also presents her thoughts and ideas in a regimented, professional and interesting way.
It's that kind of approach that makes her lessons and her book a very easy and comforting guide to follow when exploring the art of silk-screening.
"Water-Based Screen-printing Today" helped turn what was just a curiosity of mine, into a blossoming hobby.
While it might be true that actual silk-screening classes, with true hands on experience can't be replaced by a book, for me this book provided enough helpful information, for very little money, to help me decide if silk-screening was something I might wish to pursue further.
I don't think you can ask much more from a book such as this.
I hope to some day make it to one of the authors workshops that she has on occasion throughout the country, so that I may find out if I have the ability to take my hobby to an even more fulfilling level.
Great Teaching Tool.......2007-08-08
This practical guide to the silk screen process is really useful. There are plenty of illustrations and detailed instruction on how the author achieved the look shown. Of course, as with all art making, there is always more than one way to do something. The author explains how projects are handled in their particular shop. The section on halftone screens is very useful, as is the explanation of monotyping. This book takes the time to explain ways of making the process work "at home." I used sections out of this manual for a beginning silk screen class, and they found it helpful

Terrific Digital Printmaking Book.......2002-09-18
While searching out another photography book, I stumbled upon this one and bought it on a whim. What a revelation! I am totally thrilled with the book, the authors' writing, and the info - both aesthetic and concrete - inside. I've had several print b/w darkrooms - bathroom affairs that I've loved - but no longer have the space. I really have missed the print-making experience. Thus Creative Digital Printmaking opened new and exciting doors to me. Even better, it clearly explained how to handcolor digiprints, something I'd done with my b/w images, but never imagined I could do with a digital print.
The book's instructions and explanations are masterful - clear and concise, yet full of exciting techniques. While the book takes the reader on interesting creative journeys, Airey also focuses on the concrete, such as how to calibrate a monitor and the best way to scan a negative or photograph. The combination works. So do the excellent photographic examples. If you have the urge to make digital prints that last and ones that resonate with and excite viewers, this book will guide you on your way. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Practical and inspiring.......2002-02-18
You can spend weeks following web users groups that discuss specific papers, inks, printers and combinations of archival inks and papers etc. You can subscribe to numerous artists' magazines. But in this book, you can save yourself months, because of Theresa Airey's practical information and lists. The book not only helps photographers looking for quality in printing but it also gives people who hand tint photos good advice with the current lineup of digital materials. From the applications standpoint, I like that this book takes readers from basics to difficult, creative projects. The listings for companies, websites, papers and other media are excellent. To Amphoto Books: Please give us more from this talented and extraordinarily helpful author.
BASIC Digital Printmaking.......2001-12-08
BASIC Digital Printmaking -That should be the title of this book. Perhaps for the amateur photographer who is unfamiliar with basic digital processes. There is so much more that can be done, missed completely by this book.
The book is filled with cheezy Photoshop effects equal to those "star" filters back in the 70's. cheezy, cheezy, cheezy...
Informative & Enjoyable.......2001-11-27
For those who endeavor to perfect fine art digital printmaking, this is the book to read. It is a "how to" and so much more. The book covers paper, ink, techniques, hand coloring and the practical application and intereaction of all of these variables. The book is cogently written and elegantly displayed. It is a must for anyone's library who wishes to expand their horizons in the digital printing arena. Ms. Airey is a master of her craft and it shows.

Book Description
In 1984 a radically new graphic design magazine set out to explore the as-yet-untapped and uncharted possibilities of Macintosh-generated graphic design. Boldly new and different, Emigre broke rules, opened eyes and earned its creators, Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko, cult status in the world of graphic design. After a decade of publishing, the jury is still out on Emigre. But now, thanks to this comprehensive 10-year retrospective, you can reach your own conclusions. Are Emigre's Mac-generated graphics important, influential and controversial
or just plain ugly? You decide. "The only people who have trouble reading Emigre are graphic designers who have been trained to make type clear. The rest of the world doesn't live in that purist atmosphere." Chuck Byrne, Print Magazine, September 1992 Here gathered together for the first time, you'll find: Every Emigre cover ever issued A full catalog of over 80 Emigre typefaces Emigre's most striking editorial layouts Plus stimulating and provocative commentary from both Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko How has a magazine that prints just 7,000 copies managed to outrage so many graphic designers while inspiring so many others? The answer is in your hands.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful retrospective of Emigre type foundry.......2006-07-30
Nowadays it's hard to remember that there was ever a time that Emigre was considered shockingly radical. With the massive surge of alternative type foundries and indie type designers, it's pretty hard to think of Emigre as "indie" any more. Not to mention the huge success of their typeface Mason--slapped over so many album covers and print ads in the last thirteen years that it's become a pest font damn near approaching that of Cooper Black or Hobo. But Emigre WAS radical, as this book reminds us. And they did more than just start a revolution in computer designed type. Their real value was to reintroduce a kind of type-centric design renaissance that hadn't really been seen since Jan Tschichold's "The New Typography".
Emigre made typographic design solutions exciting again. They also taught me a great lesson--type is something to think about and rant about--it's not just window dressing to go around the art. Who needs to design around a photograph when with the right font and some imagination you can ditch the photo altogether and have something considerably more challenging?
Anyway, if you can't tell, I think pretty highly of this book and agree that every designer should keep a copy around. More importantly, I think design students should look at it to get an idea of what IS possible with type--not just Emigre type, but with a true typographic approach to design, which I think the Emigre style embodies.
The book is several years old now and evidently out of print. Still it's worth the trouble to buy a used copy as they pop up from time to time.
A Must Book for Every Graphic Designer.......2003-07-24
The Emigre story traces the fascinating development of a magazine that introduced digital typography to the design world.
Rudy Vanderlans created Emigre in 1984, the year in which the the Macintosh computer changed graphic design and typography forever.
In its early years, the brilliant experimental type/design publication featured fonts designed Zuzana Licko, a pioneer in designing typefaces on the computer for the computer. Her early bitmap fonts, designed to be used on dot matrix printers, created an uproar in a design community that was already reeling from the drastic changes in typesetting and production methods. With the introduction of high res PostScript outline technology, Licko's designs became more sophisticated and designers began to appreciate the ability to design with typography in ways never thought possible.
This book traces the journey of digital type from shocking to mainstream and contains fascinating quotes from influential design professionals. Of special interest are many examples of the best work from the early Emigres, including all of the bold, memorable covers.
A must for every graphic design library.
Strickly for typographers only.......2002-05-16
I think this book is a wonderfull thing for typofreaks and i recommend it full heartedly for any typographer out there.
As for the rest of us mortals in the design cummunity, i dont believe there anything of interest in this book ( or should i say - large notebook) because it has no 'eye candies' of any sort, printed in two colors (black and ochre), has too much text in it and in general- looks bad.
innovative.......1999-11-29
The emigre magazine in one book, is cool, a impresive book, with a great size, like a big magazine shows the innovative design of the rudy vanderlas magazine trough the years, is a lovely book, buy it!
buy a bigger bookshelf for this one.......1998-03-17
Somewhat of a biased reviewer, I recommend this book to any person that loves typography and wants to see the results of tremendous creative forces within the field. Or, if you have wanted to do something for a long time but didn't think you could do it ... also recommended for you.
