Book Description

Manga from the Floating World is the first full-length study in English of the kibyôshi, a genre of sophisticated pictorial fiction widely read in late-eighteenth-century Japan. By combining analysis of the socioeconomic and historical milieus in which the genre was produced and consumed with three annotated translations of works by major author-artist Santô Kyôden (1761-1816) that closely reproduce the experience of encountering the originals, Adam Kern offers a sustained close reading of the vibrant popular imagination of the mid-Edo period. The kibyôshi, Kern argues, became an influential form of political satire that seemed poised to transform the uniquely Edoesque brand of urban commoner culture into something more, perhaps even a national culture, until the shogunal government intervened.

Based on extensive research using primary sources in their original Edo editions, the volume is copiously illustrated with rare prints from Japanese archival collections. It serves as an introduction not only to the kibyôshi but also to the genre's readers and critics, narratological conventions, modes of visuality, format, and relationship to the modern Japanese comicbook (manga) and to the popular literature and wit of Edo. Filled with graphic puns and caricatures, these entertaining works will appeal to the general reader as well as to the more experienced student of Japanese cultural history.

4 out of 5 stars A good effort but not an easy read.......2007-07-12

A scholarly book on the pre-cursor of present-day Japanese manga. Hey, if it's from the Harvard East Asian Center, you can't expect a leisure reading of a Time-Life edition on the topic. A well-researched book based on numerous primary Japanese sources, it weighs almost five pounds. Many interesting woodblock prints that shed lights on the daily living of the Edo period. Almost a five stars effort - but the annotations of the three primary works are located separately from the pictorial prints, which makes it awfully difficult to go back and forth between the pictures and the annotations, especially when the book weighs as much as it does. Otherwise, a pioneer work on the subject for which Mr. Kern should be well applauded.

5 out of 5 stars An excetpional art book.......2007-05-06

This is a rare and comprehensive look into the real orgins of comics in Japan. This long overdue study is magnificently illustrated and annotated with brilliant essays on the history of Kibyoshibon. Calling these proto-comics manga is a bit of a stretch, but then kibyoshibon were always a medium that invited exaggeration.

5 out of 5 stars A RARE LOOK AT A UNIQUE LITERARY FORM.......2007-02-03

With this richly illustrated (some 200 images) comprehensive volume readers are introduced to unique books that flourished during Japan's Edo period - the kibyoshi. While the kibyoshi format would lead one to believe it was a children's comic book, it was in actuality "possessed of a sophisticated if entertaining content, dabbling often in social satire and occasionally in political satire."

The kibyoshi, the author states, is the earliest comicbook for an adult audience in Japan. And, its audience was, of course, mostly male , educated, often merchants and artisans. It is at times compared to the modern Japanese comicbook, manga, a comparison explored by the author.

We are all well familiar with the bromide one picture is worth a thousand words, such is certainly the case in this fascinating volume. Woodblocks are amazingly detailed, such as Fig 4.22 which refers to the competition between fire brigades known for their high ladder acrobatics. It is said that members of one of the real life brigades was so insulted by the way they were depicted that they ransacked the homes of the author and publisher.

One of this reader's favorites is the caricature of a playboy, Enjiro, only son and thus heir of the wealthy owner of the D. Bauchery Shop. Enjiro is pictured with a satisfied smile on his round face and described as being in his twenties "without ever having contracted poverty or any other disease, thank you very much." We see his kimono clad figure lying on the floor, enjoying his pipe and dreaming of sensual pursuits.

The robust humor and abundantly detailed drawings evidenced by the authors of the kibyoshi make reading this volume a happy pleasure, while the historical data so assiduously collected by the author is illuminating.

Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-06-21

If you've always like the manga/anime art style but can't draw, then this book is for you. Just select different clipart from multiple character files to "create" your own characters. There are some good tutorials within the book, like how to apply different coloring techniques and effects in Photoshop, but individuals who already know how to use Photoshop might find this inadequate or merely a refresher course for what they already know.

On the plus side, there really are a great number of combinations and designs you can choose to create, including monsters, mecha designs, and male/female characters. And if you're short on ideas for character design, this might serve as a source for ideas. However, be wary of this item, as I truly think there maybe something wrong with the disc. Based upon the previous reviewer, I made a backup copy of the original CD, but I am happy to say, my CPU has had no problems reading it so far. However, while browsing through the book and comparing the files on the CD, I noticed that one of the character sets, "Evil Monsters", is missing from my disc. It is annoying to pay full price for a product and not receive everything promised to you... =/

Bottom Line: A good buy for the beginning manga artist and those who don't know how to use Photoshop. I think advanced artists who already know how to draw or use Photoshop might find it inadequete. Hope this review helped any potential buyers.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!.......2006-12-27

Needless to say I was very excited when I bought this product. Not being a very good drawer, I saw this program as an answer to my inability to create in this very popular art form. Well, I'm sorry I spent the money. Everything worked fine for the first figure. After that, the CD file would not react to any command given to it in photoshop. I don't know what the problem was ( it's possible the files corrupt with age )but I literally spend hours trying to figure out what was wrong. I just gave up.
Stay away until something better turns up!

    3 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate this higher........2005-11-06

The artist, Koh Kawarajima and his crew are very talented and are remarkable at what they do. The art in this book is very well done with innovative designs, vibrant colors, and astonishing backgrounds. The style of the manga in this book is my favorite, big eyes, long hair and cute faces. There is about 64 pictures not including the pencil drawing rough drafts in the back. I wish this is all I could say about the book, but it isn't.

The reason I can not recommend this book is this; girls that show too much. Most pictures are rather modest, but some go too far. A few pictures have girls that are barley clothed and some that aren't clothed at all. Some are intentionally sticking their butt and some are about to "fall out" of what they are wearing. Some are in bathing suits and some are in their underwear. This is typical for manga I'm sorry to say, and I can not advocate this for anyone.

      Book Description

manga /mon-gah/ noun A type of Japanese comic book published in anthologized series, vastly popular in Japan among adults and widely influential on advertising, visual arts, and particularly the Anime film genre.

The influence of manga—a central figure in Japanese mainstream culture for decades—has begun to spread outside of Japan, making waves in the West and influencing not only comic designers, but also advertisers, filmmakers, and creative professionals in general. But why is manga so insanely popular? Why do the Japanese obsess over it, pushing weekly distribution figures into the millions? Inside this mega-guide you'll get the skinny on the manga phenomenon and its superstars—both human and fictional—via 140 A to Z listings of the most talented and influential manga artists, from classic maestros—like Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astroboy) and Katsuhiro Otomo (creator of Akira)—to the hottest newcomers such as Reiko Okano and world famous artists like Hayao Miyazaki (creator of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away). Each entry includes biographical and bibliographical information, descriptions of main characters, and of course plenty of examples of the artist's finest manga spreads and covers.

      Bonus DVD includes:
      • 3 interviews with cutting-edge manga artists (1 underground, 1 traditional, and 1 top artist)
      • Tokyo manga shop tour: inside Tokyo's coolest and biggest (up to 150,000 titles in one shop!)
      • 900 manga covers

3 out of 5 stars Not worth the money; buy it secondhand instead........2007-02-18

I bought this title at a major discount, and boy, am I glad I did. The intention behind this book was good (feature a few pages on over a hundred of manga's most prominent manga-ka), but the execution was so poor, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. This was one project that was definitely rushed, which is a shame, because had the editors spent one more week proofreading it, all would have been perfect.

Some of the more obvious glaring errors:

      1. Covers and artwork duplicated several times and misprinted under the wrong artist. Good luck looking for more artwork by the mangaka, Yasuhiro Nightow (Trigun), because another person's artwork is duplicated under his section. He is just one of several artists who are missing artwork due to this same problem.

      2. Page numbers only on the opening page to each profile (makes finding this artist from the table of contents much harder than it should have been)

      3. No captions as to what title each artwork is from

      4. Artists in the table of contents half-heartedly listed alphabetically. The names start alphabetically with A's, then for no reason at all jumps to the "I's", then to "M's", then to S's, then jump back to M's again. Making matters worse is that the names are sometimes listed alphabetically by first name (rather than last name).

      5. No index to compensate for the shoddy table of contents or lack of captions to artwork

Worse than the glaring errors are the glaring omissions in who was listed here. Don't expect to see Tohru Fujisawa (GTO), Monkey Punch (Lupin III), Yuu Watase (Fushigi Yugi), Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alcehmist), Keiji Nakazawa (Barefoot Gen), or Hayao Miyazaki in here. I mean, I understand that no book can have it all, but how can you attempt to put out a definitive "who's who" of artists and not have these people in there?

One last thing about this book that put a bitter taste in my mouth was some of the imagery. Although I understand that some of the artists listed do pornographic art, was it really necessary for the editors to include the most graphic, revolting, and sexually explicit of their work, rather than stuff with some tasteful nudity or eroticism? Case in point: there's a few panels featured under one artist showing a hermaphrodite getting her phallus chopped off with a cleaver. Vile doesn't even begin to describe how disgusting this image is. I'm no prude, but c'mon... that's ridiculous. Stuff like that really takes away from what otherwise could be a cool coffee table book that you hope to show your friends or occupy your visitors.

All in all, my advice to you is that if you must have this book, either borrow it first or buy it secondhand or on discount. It's not only extremely frustrating to navigate, with so many mistakes and missing mangaka it's not worth the price.

      4 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-09-24

This is a heavy chunk of a book with lots of visuals featuring samples of the manga pages in the native Japanese language and thumbnails of selected manga cover art. The samples come in greyscale or full colour which I think is quite a bonus! Categories are sorted by manga-ka (manga author) and although it doesn't feature all the manga artists you might expect (for example Yumiko Igarashi who did the 'Candy Candy' series), most of the authors I love are in there, albeit their biography could do with some updating. Some of the content layout are confusing as what the other reviewers had said, there are a few discrepancies to be found. Otherwise, it's a really good book for re-reading & reference. The DVD-rom included makes for an interesting view too.

      4 out of 5 stars Editing mistakes..........2005-02-04

The book should get 5 stars but the editing mistakes are truly confusing, especially if you are unfamiliar with a particular artist's work. Each artist is supposed to have a couple pages of art as an example of their work, and in some cases the art is obviously not that of the artist being showcased. It's frustrating because the book is otherwise great! Also, the writing suffers from 'engrish' spelling and grammatical errors, but I actually like that! Either way, still a great reference for serious manga fans.

3 out of 5 stars Glaring Editing errors mar a great book.......2004-11-24

I am very impressed with this book's selection of artists. The problem is some of the images are mismatched, repeated, or noticably missing. I hope these errors will be fixed in a future printing or edition.

      5 out of 5 stars Manga monster........2004-10-06

What could be better for Manga fans than this chunky heavyweight book? The work of a hundred and fifty artists beautifully presented so you can compare their output, from the fragile, design oriented style of Maki Kusumoto to the gutsy in-your-face work of Tetsuo Hara or the child-like whimsy of Momoko Sakura. Each illustrator gets four pages, two with sample artwork and two for biographic detail and three cover reproductions in color. The back of the book has a Manga glossary and websites for some of the artists. I have a minor criticism of the book though, annoyingly the page numbers are only on the first spread of each artist and then positioned right into the spine.

Wait, there's more! As well as pages and pages of great comic artwork you get a knockout DVD, too. This has interviews with three artists, Usaruara Furuya, Naoki Urasawa and Reko Okano, lasting an hour and nicely they are presented as if they were speaking from frames on a comic page, plus there is a tour and interviews with four comic shop managers but the really great feature of the DVD are the nine hundred covers (presented in color and two at a time) and if you looked at each one for ten seconds you'll be watching for two hours and thirty minutes.

I think this is a pretty amazing package and OK, maybe it won't have everybody's favorite artist but I doubt you'll find anything better at this price.

      Book Description

More than a hundred years before Japanese comics swept the globe, the master engraver Hokusai was producing beautiful, surreal, and often downright wacky sketches and drawings, filled with many of the characters and themes found in modern manga. These out-of-context caricatures, which include studies of facial expressions, postures, and situations ranging from the mundane to the otherworldly, demonstrate both the artist's style and his taste. In addition to the landscapes for which he is beloved, Hokusai's mangas reveal his compassion for farmers, artisans, and peasants, as well as his keen eye for the absurd.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value.......2007-06-13

Hokusai Manga is Katsushika Hokusai's 15 volume encyclopedia of casual drawings (man-ga) or loose sketches. The last two volumes were published posthumously.

Rather than write an essay of why I think this is an excellent book, I'd like to just list some of the reasons:

      - Inside the US this is the only text (available in retail book stores) that devotes itself to Hokusai's Manga which is a shame because it is such a masterwork. Novelist James A. Michener wrote a book entitled "The Hokusai Sketchbooks" in 1958 but it is not in print anymore.

      - Both authors do a good job explaining the historical details of the Manga and Hokusai's possible inspiration. It would be nice to see more of Hokusai's own views but I understand they must difficult to come by.

      - The book consists of two introductory chapters by the authors and four chapters of selections from the Manga.

      - The sketches dominate the text which is the way it should be. The art can speak for itself.

      - I like the heavy paper the book is printed on and you definitely have the feeling you are holding a quality book. The weight of the paper also makes the drawings seem more like real prints.

      - The print quality of the art is excellent and you get the feeling they are sincere facsimiles of the originals in color and in texture.

      - The smaller size of the book is also very nice. I travel quite a bit and to lug around huge hardback tomes takes its toll on you.

      - Given my admiration for the paper, I'd still trade it for bible type paper to see more the sketches. They are marvelous.

      - I think you need to allow yourself to settle in and relax a bit whilst reading this as the subtleties of the drawings will tell you many stories.

There are modern versions of the manga still being published in Japan but as far I can tell they are not sold in the US (Midwest).

This book is amazing. I was looking at in a store contemplating buying it cause it was a tad bit expensive, when a stranger came up and told me it was a great book. I bought it and it really was worth all the money. It has such detailed instructions on how to draw some amazing manga. I have to admit there are a few pieces of art in it that are a bit inappropriate for little kids but it's still a great book and worth the money. BUY IT!

The Manga University Background Collection Workbook is actually a collection of pre-drawn backgrounds that you can use for your own manga works. There are currently about 3 workbooks; this first part being a background collection of places in Tokyo.

The pictures are divided into 2 parts; one in plain ink, and the other fully done in ink and tone. Depending on your preferences, you can use the one in plain ink and do your own “toning”, or you can just used the finished background.

There’s also an “advanced technique” section that teaches you advanced screen tones technique. Personally, I find this greatly useful and handy, although I would greatly appreciate if there were MORE examples in the book! It seems a little too “thin”, but then again, maybe that’s why it’s called a “workbook”. -_-0

Overall, the workbook makes for a really handy reference for both beginners and intermediate artists alike. Give this a try if you have trouble drawing backgrounds or would like to learn and practice drawing backgrounds.
