Yost President Mary Black Foundation, Inc.

Cheryl and James have created a valuable resource for both the novice and the experienced grantseeker/writer."—Marlene L. 5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-08-24

I have a huge library of Grant Seeking and Managing books. I purchased this one recently and was amazed...it's the BEST! I have since bought all of Cheryl Carter New and Jame Aaron Quick's Grant books. I now use them for every grant I put together. When I discuss the Grant world with the Non-Profits and Governments I work with I use the material found in their books almost exclusively. If you are new to the Grant world these are the first books you should purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2001-09-05

I am an intermediate grantseeker who hoped to find a book that would assist me in further honing my writing. This book did just that. It is concise yet substantial and provided me with a fresh approach that will be useful for years to come. The language is intelligent (the authors steer clear of trite, 'inspirational' language), clear, and honest. I suggest this book for anyone interested in the grantseeking process.

2 out of 5 stars Good Book with a Glaring Omission.......2001-03-27

There are excellent guidelines in this book. If you purchase it, you will be getting good information except for one very important area which appears to be completely overlooked. In today's grant market, you must know how to design good outcome measures. The concepts of goals and objectives come into play here (and are addressed in the book), but the buzz words are "outcome measures". I wish the authors had included a chapter or two on designing outcomes measures for both project oriented grants and for general operating grants (which are by far the harder to design).

The information here is good. It is easy to understand and, from my experience as a full time grant writer, right on the mark. Just know you will have to attend a workshop or find another place to learn about outcome measures.

3 out of 5 stars well-written steps to follow.......2000-01-29

In recently conducted grant workshops for teachers this guide was most helpful. For future workshops-- for educators applying for grants in their field, another title might be more appropriate and targeted to needs of educators. Educators usually have an RFP in hand and this book is helpful to find funding ....which isn't always the educator's focus at that moment.

5 out of 5 stars Grantseeker's Toolkit Review.......2000-01-06

Grantseeker's Toolkit is a must read for novice as well as experienced grantwriters. Cheryl Carter New and James Aaron Quick have laid out, in easy to follow steps, the complete grantwriting process. They have generously shared their own specific techniques that begins with formulating ideas for fundable projects to the actual writing of grants and ultimately to finding appropriate funders. It is a realistic and throrough approach that teaches readers how to prepare proposals that meet the requirements of funding sources. Grantseeker's Toolkit is divided into parts. Part I covers the designing of fundable projects that includes the development and refining of ideas, grantseeking strategies and designing and organizing the projects. Part II covers finding suitable funders for projects. This section explains federal, state, foundation and corporate funders and their general proposal requirements. Part III includes the development of the final project, explaining how to meet the grantors guidelines and the actual writing of proposals. Part IV takes readers through each step of writing proposals. The procedure teaches readers how to write problem statements, determine the operation of the project, laying out budgets and also shows readers how to prepare the final package for submission. Grantseeker's Toolkit provides an all inclusive method to follow for grant writing and thoroughly prepares readers for completing successful proposals I am certain purchasers of this book will be quite satisfied and will refer to it often when writing future proposals.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a house, design a whole neighborhood.......2004-09-17

Most of us like architectural books because we think, or possibly just dream of building our own ULTIMATE house. Here, however, is a book not on building a house, but on building an entire neighborhood.

It starts with a bit of history, the pattern books written in roman times. It brings them up to date with a survey of several American neighborhoods dating from turn of the century times. And finally it goes on to show what the authors have done as they designed blocks, sub-divisions and the like. It is intended to show what can be done to replace the common cookie cutter houses common in recent developments. It is a fascinating book that leads to thinking.

Here comes the story of the Hurricane: On June 17, 1966, two men entered the Lafayette Grill in Paterson, New Jersey, and shot four people, killing three. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a onetime contender for the middleweight boxing crown, and John Artis, an acquaintance of Carter's, were charged with the murders. In a highly publicized and racially loaded trial, the prosecution hinged its case upon the convoluted and contradictory testimonies of two lifelong criminals, and failed to present any definitive evidence of Carter and Artis's guilt. Nonetheless, both innocent men were sentenced to life in prison. Hurricane is a detailed, inspiring account of Carter's 22-year effort to exonerate himself and regain his freedom.

Carter's saga is rich and complicated, and James Hirsch deserves praise for his balanced treatment. He brings Carter's electrifying and complex personality alive without unnecessarily lionizing him, masterfully detailing his transformation from a defiant, intimidating man known for his dangerous temper and stubborn pride into a enlightened one who defeated despair and unimaginable injustice. Upon incarceration, Carter refused to behave like a guilty man--by defying the rules: rejecting prison garb and keeping his jewelry, shunning prison food, and failing to see a parole officer. His defiance earned him cruel punishment, but he compelled the rigid, unforgiving system to come to terms, at least in certain instances.

Though he began an earnest study of the law in order to issue his own appeals, he could not have won his freedom without the astonishing collective effort of others. After a 1974 front-page story in The New York Times revealed his plight, there followed an outpouring of public support that included celebrity endorsements from, among many others, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, and Bob Dylan, who immortalized him in the famous song "Hurricane". Though all the publicity turned Carter into an icon for a time, ultimately it was the efforts of a group of enigmatic Canadians and a team of persistent lawyers that helped Carter achieve justice.

He lost his family, his boxing career, and 22 years of his life, yet in the end, he refused to allow bitterness to consume him. When the charges against him were finally dropped in 1988, he spoke at a press conference:

If I have learned nothing else in life, I've learned that bitterness only consumes the vessel that contains it. And for me to permit bitterness to control or infect my life in any way whatsoever, would be to allow those who imprisoned me to take even more than the twenty-two years they've already taken. Now, that would make me an accomplice to their crime...
He emerged from the fight of his life with his dignity and humanity intact. --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description

In 1967, the black boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and a young acquaintance, John Artis, were wrongly convicted of triple murder by an all-white jury in Paterson, New Jersey. Over the next decade, Carter gradually amassed convincing evidence of his innocence and the vocal support of celebrities from Bob Dylan to Muhammad Ali. He was freed in 1976 pending a new trial, but he lost his appeal -- to the amazement of many -- and landed back in prison. Carter, bereft, shunned almost all human contact until he received a letter from Lesra Martin, a teenager raised in a Brooklyn ghetto. Against his bitter instincts, Carter agreed to meet with Martin, thus taking the first step on a tortuous path back to the world. Martin introduced him to an enigmatic group of Canadians who helped wage a successful battle to free him. As Carter orchestrated this effort from his cell, he also embarked on a singular intellectual journey, which led ultimately to a freedom more profound than any that could be granted by a legal authority.

4 out of 5 stars My Journey to Rubin.......2007-05-12

I loved this book almost as much as I loved the movie. For me it was one more step to tracking down the man, the legend. This is a wonderful book for anyone to read, from juveniles through senior citizens. The justice that eventually prevailed is of the feel good sort. It was such an incredible coming together of so many elements. I think that it should be included on recommended booklists in middle and elementary schools.

4 out of 5 stars Emotional Story Chronicling One Setback After Another.......2005-12-24

The life of Rubin Carter is certainly worth reading about regardless of what side of the debate you are on. Many people feel passionate about both his innocence and guilt. This book may help the reader decide for himself or herself, but it obviously has an innocent slant to it which the author makes known and makes no apologies.

The story as many of you know involved the conviction of Rubin Carter and John Artis for a triple murder that took place at a bar in Patterson, NJ. The men always maintained their innocence much to the chagrin of prosecutors. Whether Rubin did this crime or not is besides the question considering he got released from a Federal Court over a writ of habeas corpus issue. The court did not rule on whether he was guilty or innocent even though he had been convicted twice before for the triple murders. The Supreme Court judge that decided to overturn the convictions cited a "racial revenge" motive and prosecutorial withhlding of information as reasons to overturn the case. Therefore, after many intense struggles with personal demons and many years in prison Rubin Carter was released a free man. The book recounts his troubled life as a juvenile, his violent temper, his prize-fighting boxing days, and his many years spent in different prison institutions. Apparently while in prison Carter transformed these former attributes by personal study and reflection. He found some people from a Canadian commune to help go to battle for him and eventually won his freedom. It's a powerful story with a few problem areas. One problem area is that there are so many legal meanderings throughout the book that you begin to feel as if you are undertaking a tedious chore sorting through all of it. You lose the zest and earnest interest you first had when you started the book. The other problem area is it's obviously a very opinionated book meant to portray Carter as an innocent man wronged by the system. However, after reading about Carter's past, his media provoking of local authorities, and his temper, I came away feeling very ambivalent. Whereas, I expected to become totally convinced of his innocence I began to feel I wasn't for sure. Nevertheless, it's a compelling story if you can get past the legal "John Grisham" feel of the book.

Rubin Carter continues to fight to this day to overcome the hardness and emotional devastation he had thrust upon him while in prison. We learn that while he is thankful to be out he still has a long way to go to live the life he yearns for. To put to rest the demons bothering him (such as alcohol) and to be able to trust people is one of the great challenges he faces. One can only hope that justice was served in this instance and that he picks up what he has left of his life and makes the most of it.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK! It's that simple........2005-09-23

I have read both this and Rubin Carter's own The 16th Round. There are some things that I believe on both sides of the story. I do believe that Rubin did have a violent juvenile past, and was an angry man. Yet, if a person who is facing oppression on a daily basis i'm sure you would tend to have violent tendancies as well; it's easy to make statements about a man's life when we are in a prosperous 21st century and not in the 1940 - 1950's. I do agree that the film does cut out the large part of Rubin's transformation from a violent individual to a more spiritual one.

I am a young Australian who is not of the age to be around when Rubin Carter was set free. This case was so badly stuck together it provides a good look at the judicial system considering it kept an innocent man in jail for 19 years.

And one of the most insulting facts of the case was that when Rubin was set free from jail in 1985, he was set free because of the biased and racial case that was built before him. NOT because he didn't do the crime. Makes me aggrovated.

If you want a book that will open your mind and make you think independently, then buy this and the 16th Round straight away.

1 out of 5 stars This Biography changed my mind.......2005-09-22

Before I read this bio my only knowledge of the Hurricane case was from what other's had told me. Based on that I always felt the guy was probably framed. After reading this bio, I feel he was probably guilty.

By the first third of this book I found myself not liking Carter. It seemed obvious to me that this was a very angry and violent man who was also very dishonest. This book attempts to make a martyr of a man who seemed like trouble even before he was convicted of the alleged murder. It also attempts to explain away every bad thing this man did (and there were many) by trying to make him look like the victim.

The author nor Carter never once admit to any wrong doing on Carter's part regardless of what it may be. If just ONCE Carter had taken responsibility for some of his nasty behavior and poor dealings with other folk, I may have had a more open mind. But this is a blatant attempt at reaching for excuses for every thing that went wrong in his life. Carter and the author want everybody to believe that Carter was the victim of frame-ups, conspiracies, and racism at every turn in his life. I was not convinced.

The pattern that I found apparent in Carter's personality is that he only opened up to folks who could give him something he wanted and once he got it, he changed his personable and trusting come-on and threw them on the scrap heap. Often rationalizing his using of those who helped him by twisting it into some delusional offense against him. The best I can say for Carter is that he struck me as a very cunning con-man who ultimatley beat the system by using people for his own needs until he was portrayed in the main stream media as a martyr and a victim. I no longer buy into that portyrayel after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Skip the movie, Read this Book.......2004-03-02

I read this book and then saw the movie. This is a familiar formula for disappointment. The book is much better and richer than the movie. The movie portrays Carter as some kind of saint, deeply-principled, who is railroaded by the justice system. As the book reveals, Carter was a deeply troubled individual during the 1960's. Carter was a very angry person who seemed to antagonize authority. He was also an alcoholic and had selfish, chauvanistic attitudes towards women. These traits are overlooked in the film. In fact, the movie shows Carter a suave, kind person. The filmmakers probably skipped these aspects of Carter because they wanted the viewers to like Carter and root for him. In reality, Carter didn't seem a likeable person.
HOWEVER, the fact that Carter was a troubled, angry person doesn't mean he's guilty of murder. Some people seem to invest their dislike of "hollywood justice" and the "cause celeb" aura surrounding this case, into convicting Carter for the murders. Don't confuse the issues. Carter was not a saint but he's still entitled to justice. Part of this book is the story of the unraveling of the prosecutor's case. As a federal district court found, the prosecutors withheld vital evidence from the defense - evidence which the defense was legally entitled to. The prosecutors also resorted to prejudice during the trial to persuade the jury of Carter's guilt. This is the so-called racial revenge theory advanced by the prosecution.
The other important and most fascinating part of the book is the transformation of the man. During his prison sentence, Carter transforms himself, with the help of others, from an angry, troubled individual to a much kinder and complete human being. The movie, by overlooking Carter's bad traits, robs the viewer of this incredible growth of one person.
My advice is to skip the movie and read this excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars TELLS IT LIKE IT IS.......2004-05-10

I could have wished for better, more focused writing, as this book wanders around a lot -- but Dr. Carter provides plenty of examples of useful therapies that we don't get to try because Big Pharma can't profit from them. He shows how our "free enterprise" medicine is driven by profit and how large special-interest organizations (drug companies, insurance companies, government agencies, big bucks charities and especially, the AMA) determine what kind of treatments are considered "legitimate."

He shows how the government's requirements for testing new (and old, but never "scientifically" tested)) treatments, along with the almost fanatic belief in double-blind trials keeps good therapies from public use. Many other countries sanction these therapies, but in the US, allopathic medicine - led by the AMA -has a virtual monopoly on providing health care.

Since Dr. Carter wrote this book, the situation has improved a bit for alternative treatments, but overall, health care in the US is stagnant and disastrously expensive. If we had a system where the incentives were for delivery of good, cost-effective care for everyone, we would get fewer bypass operations, take fewer pills, and get fewer high-tech tests. But we'd be much better off as a society than we are with our bloated, overpriced profit-driven health care environment that mainly benefits big drug and insurance companies and highly-paid providers and executives.

The most shocking revelation in the book is how local medical societies team up with government to persecute providers who use unorthodox treatments. The medical profession claims it uses hearings to weed out bad doctors, but it seems these local medical societies mostly go after doctors who might have a treatment (like EDTA chelation) that doesn't cost enough. AMA doctors, hospitals, and even insurance companies would rather do a $30,000 operation than let someone suffering from clogged arteries have a $3000 treatment.

We Americans pay obscene (and unsustainable) amounts of money for health insurance only to be denied payment for treatments we may choose for ourselves. These denials of payment and persecutions of pratitioners are the actions of a monopoly protecting its own financial interest.

When will the American people demand a change? Wake up, America! You do not have the best medical care in the world, just the most expensive.

5 out of 5 stars A vociferous and articulate warning.......2004-04-14

Racketeering In Medicine: The Suppression Of Alternatives by physician and health issues consultant James P. Carter is a sharply worded expose of just how the financial bottom line is warping and skewing the manner in which medical treatments are researched, tested, and approved. A vociferous and articulate warning against the undue influence of pharmaceutical companies, and the suppression of the benefits of less costly alternative treatments, Racketeering In Medicine is a stimulating account of a very real problem present in American health care today and should be mandatory reading for health care activists, health care policy makers, and health care providers.

1 out of 5 stars Yes, science and reason is a conspriacy!.......2003-02-04

This book is an excellent example of the paranoia that grips people who don't understand the standards of science and reason. The author could well go on to write another book on the "conspiracy" of the criminal justice system that keeps us all poor by cracking down on bank robbers. After all, the banks have lots of money so why shouldn't we just go there and get some whenever we want? In like fashion, sCAMsters claim they have an "alternative" to scientific standards of medical care and complain when they are unmasked as charlatans and frauds.

5 out of 5 stars Racketeering in Medicine The Suppression of Alternatives.......2002-04-09

I found this book to be a most informative read. To those that think there is no conspiracy to halt or suppress alternative treatments , I have experienced this first hand as a german doctor in the US to further his education has had his visa revoked because he has used alternatives taught in his country and in many surrounding countries , yet his wife is allowed to stay until her education is paid for. This man donated time to a free clinic and is highly respected in our town.He has helped many people with herbal and alternative treatments including EDTA Chelation , but in peer revue was chastized by local doctors who were losing patients.BUY this book and find out for yourself....take your own health in your own hands....DON'T blindly follow orthodox medicine.......RSN

1 out of 5 stars Bogus pseudo-science, paranoid conspiracy theories.......2001-12-10

This has to be pretty much the most worthless book I've ever encountered. It details a vast "conspiracy" against the American people on the part of every reputable scientist who has ever walked on this earth (as vs. Dr. Carter's tame circle of quacks, who are of course perfect in Dr. Carter's estimation despite the fact that their so-called "studies" violate every principle of double-blind controlled research). If you are an adherent of wishy-washy new age "therapies" or you believe that the U.S. government is covering up the "fact" that UFO's are visiting our planet, you'll love this book. If you know a single bit of science, buy this book only for the comic effect.

    Book Description

Step-by-step guidance, insider tips, and all the tools you need to create budgets and financial plans that win grants

Grants are a major source of funding in the nonprofit sector, and nonprofits invest considerable time, effort, and resources into obtaining them. A key aspect of any successful grant application initiative is budgeting and financial planning. A well-crafted budget, clearly delineating when, where, and how grant moneys will be applied, goes a long way toward selling a grantor on an applicant's vision. Unfortunately, many nonprofit professionals lack the know-how required to create budgets that instill grantors with confidence. This book fills that much-needed gap. Authors James Aaron Quick and Cheryl Carter New walk you through the entire budgeting process, providing invaluable insider tips, guidelines, and rules of thumb. More importantly, they provide you with indispensable guidance including a complete, step-by-step budgeting system, with each step fully documented and accompanied by an arsenal of powerful tools, plus much more to help you transform your organization's vision-and mission-into reality.

4 out of 5 stars Great Step by Step to a Budget that Makes Sense.......2005-01-25

I discovered this book when writing The Complete Idiot's Guide to Grant Writing and found it terrific for learning how to put together a program budget. Having done this for years and having taught others how to do it, I found their approach clear and to the point. The many examples are especially helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Much more that you asked for...........2002-07-14

I have done many budgets and taught workshops and seminars on how to do budgets. The first response I had to this book is that I was glad I understood the process because if I didn't, I would not be able to understand this book. It is obfuscating, repetitive, and full of obscure, irrelevant quotes from such diverse sources as Humpty Dumpty, the Cheshire Cat and Shakespeare. As a matter of fact, I usually don't use obfuscating words or concepts myself, but this book has led me to do so. Having said that, I did gain new knowledge, new concepts and new viewpoints that will be very helpful. It was hard work to find these gems - I prefer direct, basic explanations since they usually avoid confusion. I also disliked Wise Guy and Wise Lady - text set aside in blocks - where he asks dumb questions and she give smart-aleck or condescending answers to dumb questions. Both are insulting to the intelligence of the reader.

This is definitely not a book that you pick up as a reference source when you are beginning or in the middle of preparing a budget. It is not a book for beginners, unless you have the time and patience to work your way through, chapter by chapter, learning their process step by step. Indeed, it would be a good text for a full semester class, with lectures and homework and steady progression through its many topics. Budgets don't really come into the picture until Chapter 5. The authors require that you learn or relearn their terminology relevant to grant writing before you can approach actual budgeting. Throughout the book they present concepts and ideas, and drag on through several paragraphs or pages saying what something is not before saying what it is. By their definition, of course - which you must accept to move forward.

This is really a book on preparing grant applications, not just budgets. Several chapters and sections of chapters are devoted to projects, programs, defining problems, defining solutions, project development, and program evaluation. Each is described in detail, with examples and forms, which are also available on the accompanying CD-ROM. By the time you get to Chapter 5 and see a budget form you are exhausted. But take a vitamin pill - Chapters 6 through 9 detail in depth the difference components of a budget, using their terminology. Which you memorized back in the beginning of the semester for the first test. Again, the explanations are exhaustive and belabored, and stated often in negatives, which is confusing. For example, Chapter 6 is dedicated to explaining direct costs. There are nine pages defining the different types of travel, including definitions of travel by watercraft and by animal. After all the various modes of travel are defined, the rest of the chapter explains how to acquire each of them on site and the different types of each. Bus travel is broken down into inter-city, intra-city, and chartered. They also describe express buses and local buses, and where and how to purchase tickets. More information than most of us need, to say the least. If you don't know the difference between an express and a local bus by now, you are in big trouble. Not that it is relevant to preparing a budget anyway.

The authors are committed to a budget format that uses very specific line items. They state that any item you can put in a budget can fit into one of their categories. Just for fun, I came up with a couple of items I would put in a budget that I couldn't fit into their scheme. And if you want to use their forms from the CD-ROM, you must do all your budgets according to their line items. You are on your own if you have a potential funder that demands you use their forms and their line items.

If you can ignore all the indirect, convoluted and useless information, this book has a lot to offer. Many concepts are very valuable and useful. Some of the forms are also useful. There are planning forms and evaluation forms in addition to more budget forms that usually appear in one place. Select the information that is relevant, ignore the rest and use what is applicable. Wading through the chaff to get to the wheat is not easy, but many of the kernels are worth the effort. And if you are taking or teaching a full semester course this could be a useful text or supplement.

4 out of 5 stars Book delivers more than budgeting advice.......2001-11-15

In providing a much-needed context for the discussion of grant proposal budgets, the authors have actually created a step by step, straightforward plan to design a sound project. They begin with how a good project springs from a problem that your organization can solve. Then they walk you through defining the project's purpose, goals, and component steps.

I am torn about this book, because I believe grant seekers should NOT be the ones to design programs; program staff ought to do that. However, I realize that in reality grants people often end up with this task, or can act as advisors and coaches to those going through the process. And in any case, we grant seekers need to understand the task of project design and how it relates to expressing a project in numbers and words when approaching a funder.

The book goes on to focus on budgets, after the groundwork of planning has been expertly laid. The sections on budgets are very useful for anyone dealing with government proposals.

So, while the book takes a stance I don't necessarily agree with - that the grant seeker is a project designer - I have rated it highly because it is sure to result in better planned projects for anyone who follows its advice.

    Book Description

Ministerial Ethics provides both new and experienced pastors with tools for sharpening their personal and professional decision-making skills. The authors seek to explain the unique moral role of the minister and the ethical responsibilities of the vocation and to provide ''a clear statement of the ethical obligations contemporary clergy should assume in their personal and professional lives.'' Trull and Carter deal with such areas as family life, confidentiality, truth-telling, political involvement, working with committees, and relating to other church staff members. First published in 1993, this edition has been thoroughly updated throughout and contains expanded sections on theological foundations, the role of character, confidentiality, and the timely topic of clergy sexual abuse. Appendices describing various denominational ministerial codes of ethics are included.
