Book Description
Even in a digital age dominated by the Web and DVD's, print media remains a primary means of communication in our culture. Exploring Publication Design tackles the unique challenges encountered in designing books, magazines, newspapers, promotional literature, and the various other types of print publications. Highly regarded author and design educator Poppy Evans identifies the design and communication issues specific to publications and then examines the ways in which design principles and techniques can be applied to solve these design challenges. The book's wide-ranging coverage includes the most effective ways of organizing content and using type and color, sources of visual images, the ins and outs of page layout, professional opportunities in publication design, and much more.

good design book.......2006-11-10
a really good, general design book that's easy to understand and makes perfect sense. gives great ideas and explains how to accomplish good designs.
A nice introduction to publications design, but..........2005-12-27
I am a beginnner in the realm of publications design and I was looking for a good introduction to the field. This book offers just that. It serves as a great guide for things that you will need to study in more depth if you want to function in this realm of design. The writing is very reader-friendly. It is not too wordy or "text bookish". Here is a break down of the chapters you will find in this book:
1.) Publication Desing Within an Historical Context - Exactly what it says: The history and development of graphic design as a discipline.
2.) The Principles and Elements of Publication Design - Basic design principles as applied specifically to publications.
3.) Using Color Effectively - Color is a lot more complex than one might think, and managing its use is an important part of visual communication.
4.) Understanding Type - Typography (big shocker).
5.) Page Layout - One of the most valuable chapter (IMO). Discusses grid systems and properly organizing pages.
6.) Imagery - Different types of imagery, possibly sources, using it effectively etc.
7.) Publication in the Third Dimension - Another of my favorite chapters. Introduces you to printing concerns such as paper weights and binding techniques.
8.) Design Principles at Work - Case studies of specific publication types (magazines, newspapers, newsletters, catalogs etc.).
9.) Professional Opportunities in Pubcliations Design - Awesome chapter detailing the different areas one can find work in (yes, there are quite a lot).
Overall this is a great introduction. However potential buyers should note this. These subjects definitely require further reading and study, but this book is a great starting point.
My only real complaint with this book is in regards to another book in the Design Exploration series that Poppy Evans co-authored: "Exploring the Elements of Design". This book can be a bit repetitive if you already own EoD. Some chapters may as well have been copy and pasted between the two books. That's how similar they are (ESPECIALLY the imagery chapter). Quite a few of the diagrams are copied directly from "Elements" which did annoy me quite a bit. Despite this, the chapters not appearing in "Elements" make this book more than worth the money as far as I'm concerned.
One other complaint is proof-reading. This book could have used a better dose of it. There are not that many mistakes, and I may just be nitpicking, but there were a few points where I said to myself "How did they not catch that?" For instance, in a diagram discussing gridlines, the caption references the gridlines that are supposed to be "indicated in red". Ok, this is good, except for the fact that the grid lines are actually blue. This is such a small mistake, I know, but I would think that the publishers would be more concerned about spotting inconsistencies like this.
Overall though, this is a great buy. I really enjoyed it. If you are still not sure about the purchase, you can always visit www.delmarlearning.com. I went to the website out of curiosity and discovered that they have a few sample chapters posted online in PDF format for most of their books. A big help!
Book Description
What do designers need to know about typography? The answer can be found in this richly illustrated book that examines the varied uses of type in contemporary visual communications. Exploring Typography takes a concise but thorough approach to introducing and examining the principles of typography. Coverage begins with a brief history of type and a survey of how type is classified. Readers then learn about the physical components of letters and the rules of legibility, readability, and style. Subsequent chapters survey the creative use of emphasis, designing effective layouts, using grids, and developing original type styles. Finally, the author examines contemporary challenges in type while introducing terminology and concepts relevant to designing with type in a digital environment.

Great job!.......2007-01-10
I teach at a 4 year university and had been unhappy for a while at the textbook we were using; but like any big ship, it takes a while to steer in another direction. In the meantime, I had a lot of time given to checking out possible exchanges and I was so glad that I found this book. It is everything many of the others in its genre are not.
One issue from a previously used textbook was the layout and the amount of material being presented. It was not only clumsy for a book on typography, but tragically full of errors; in spelling, grammar and facts. This book, "Exploring Typography," covers all of the important information for a first introduction into the subject. It gives a nice overview of the history of written communication starting with pre-historic man, up to the present digital era we are in. It also challenges us to think outside of where we are now and to grasp typography's place in the future.
The thing I enjoy perhaps most about the book is its easy layout. Students often have so much to read in their studies, and sadly many only skim the surface for the relevent information to get by. The layout is broken into bite-sized paragraphs, lots of images and consequently keeps their interest longer. A number of chapters highlight a present-day typographer or designer, which gives students a look at their upcoming peers as they look toward graduation.
For those interested in using the book as a textbook, I would certainly recommend having a look at it. It is a very easy-to-follow book for any age level and is definitely worth exploring. Tova Rabinowitz has done a very nice job in supplying future and current designers with something they can tangibly use and apply into their design.
Exploring Typography.......2006-05-26
Thomson Delmar Learning just sent me the book Exploring Typography to review for use in my classroom. I think it is one of the best on the subject and know it will be adopted for use in my classes. I teach at an independent high school in Vermont and also at the state college near by. The book is well organized and the illustrations are great. It must have taken a lot of effort and time to write; I am always in awe of someone that can bring light to a difficult and confusing subject such as typography....great book!!!

Adobe InDesign CS2 @work: Projects You Can Use on the Job (At Work)
ASIN: 141801432X |
Book Description
In the real world, page layout projects don't come with directions and the "recipe book" approach of most software books does little to prepare designers for the demands of a highly competitive industry. Exploring InDesign CS2 takes a different approach. With an emphasis on typography and critical thinking, the book transforms the novice into a professional typesetter- one who is grounded in industry-standard design principles. In addition to gaining professional proficiency while using the new features of Adobe InDesign CS2, users learn to begin a project while visualizing the end design, to identify the project pitfalls and challenges, and to independently strategize the best production sequence. Chapters and projects are carefully ordered to move readers from basic operations to creating complex documents using multiple master pages and paragraph and character styles, with each chapter building upon the skills presented in the previous chapter. As in industry, the emphasis throughout is on productivity, including preplanning and utilizing keyboard shortcuts.

Not for beginners.......2007-09-08
I am currently using this book for an online InDesign class I am taking, and I have to say I really do not like it at all. I have no previous knowledge of InDesign and this book has managed to make me dread doing the work. It is very confusing. One example is the book does not explain the measurement system until the middle of chapter 2 and yet, there are several projects in chapter 1 that you need to know how to set a certain size margin. This seemingly simple task turned into an all out panic session--trying to figure out the point and pica systems and convert it to inches with no knowledge of how to go about doing it. In every chapter, I spend more time trying to figure out stuff on my own than I spend applying what I've learned. Another thing, the writer does not spend enough time going back over information already learned. For example, Rydberg stresses the importance of learning shortcuts, yet might only tell you how to do it once. There are step-by-step instructions; however, half of the time he'll only tell you what the outcome should be and will fail to tell you how to go about doing it. It's not like Classroom-in-a-Book where they give you detailed step-by-step instructions every single project you work on. This book is not for people who have little patience, have no knowledge of InDesign, and don't feel like wasting time trying to figure it out.
Not for Beginners.......2007-02-21
Can a book be TOO hands on and complicated? Reading it was like trying to read a medical manual. It's not so much filled with beginner's information and practical applications to help novices, but an in-depth, unnecessarily complex analysis into the world of InDesign. This book is great for people who already know how to use InDesign and want to hone their existing skills, but useless for beginners who just want to first learn the basics of HOW to use InDesign.
Best Book for InDesign Beginner!.......2007-02-05
I've been determined to learn InDesign for the longest time. I've came across books after books but just thought they were too confusing. I was finally introduced to this one by my professor. This one is so easy to read. The chapters are well put together in a nice appropriate order. I cant see how someone doesnt learn InDesign through this book! The author even manage to teaches typography! (which will explain why you even need to know about kerning and tracking, etc. option on top) They're are projects and test at the end of the chapters that ensure that you will learn. They're are these "try this" examples throughout the books. Basically its very hands-on and that's a good thing. To learn something you literally have to try it right? So if you do everythign like it said I cant see why you wont learn InDesign.
But yeah I've sit in Barnes & Noble reading all the InDesign books they offer and went to libraries checking out different books there too and this is truly the best of them all! I am finally learning InDesign!
I dont normally write a reviews but seriously I've been searching the world for something that would teach me InDesign and now its such a relief.
Wealth of Info!.......2007-01-06
I agree with the last reviewer...Terry did a wonderful job. I came from practically no page layout background and found this a great place to start. It isn't exhaustive in technical InDesign training, but makes up for that with lots of useful "real world" information that manuals don't cover. I highly recommend it to any beginner. Thanks Terry!
Exploring In Design CS2 by Terry Rydberg.......2006-09-18
This an exceptionally well written book. I truly cannot say enough good things about it. Makes learning fun. Involves purpose and clarity with wit and humor. I love it. Thank you Ms. Rydberg, and keep up the good work!

this is a pamphlet, not a book.......2007-02-21
If you want an advertsing pamphlet telling the good things that can be done with MS Publisher, you'll like this. If you want guidance on how to use the program, look elsewhere. For the same money, you could probably get more useful info from the various MS Office books that devote 30-40 pages to publisher

It was helpful. I am doing a newsletter ans it did not have much information regarding this type of publication. I have used it some.

Highly Satisfied.......2007-10-14
I was a printer, both newspaper and commercial, for over 20 years and I found this book to be highly informative and educational. If you're interested in learning the professional way to create publications with InDesign CS3, then this book is for you. It builds on the basics, both publication and InDesign CS3, and works it's way from basic to producing advanced publications. It's easy to follow, has plenty of projects with student handouts and files, and will help you in building your publishing prowess. For me it was a great instructional tool and took me back down EMemory Lane from my printing years, if you get what I mean? Thanks for the trip, Terry!
Mac users CAUTION.......2007-09-24
I bought this book because of the 5-star rating. I'm a medium to advanced level page layout designer and have worked with both PageMaker and Quark in the past. At first this book has clear instructions for both Mac and PC users. But then it deviates and the instructions become less accurate, at least for a Mac. I'm spending an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out where stuff is. Good example: book says for Glyphs, choose Text, Glyphs. No way. Acutally, you have to choose Windows, then Type & Tables. On the plus side, this book is nicely designed and is an excellent source for learning typography and page layout. But MAC USERS PROCEED WITH CAUTION especially if you're new to this type of program.
Great Book by Great Teacher.......2007-09-17
I have used Terry's previous book when teaching InDesign CS2 and really love the update for CS3. This book has many great projects for helping you learn InDesign and makes teaching and learning InDesign a real pleasure.
Great Book by a Great Teacher!

Excellent learning for motivated users.......2007-09-04
I am a new learner to InDesign. This book is thorough, rigorous and well organized. I have many books on other software programs which I have used to teach myself those programs. This is the best work book I have used on any software program. As I neared the last chapters I was having a problem understanding one step. I emailed the author and she, Terry Rydberg, responded to me promptly and with great detail to answer my question. Don't skip the additional projects at the end of the chapters. These enforce what you have just been taught and really help this information stay in your brain so you know it rather than where you have to look it up. There are also very few errors in the book which is common place in workbooks on programs that have just released a new version. So if you are a serious learner of InDesign CS3 this is THE book for you.
