Book Description

Exploring how today’s most compelling architecture is emerging from new forms of collaborative practice, this title of AD engages three predominant phenomena: architecture’s relationship with digital and telecommunication technology; the media; and economies of globalisation. The articles in the issue explore the relationship between these readings and examine, for the first time, the implications of these phenomena upon forms of architectural invention and production. While much attention has been focused upon the influence of digital media on architectural form and technique, little has examined its far broader implications for forms of architectural practice. Yet, as with modernism and the professionalization of architecture at the end of the 19 th century and the rise of architectural corporations in the mid-20 th century, the future of architectural design will inevitably depend upon reconfigurations of architectural authorship.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking about the future........2007-02-17

Architectural Design is a magazine in book form that consistently pusheds the state of the art in design, nominally in architectural, but in reality all kinds of design. In this issue the general subject is taking advantage of the communications capability of the internet for collective or collaborative design efforts. A lot of the discussion is not specific to architecture, but is on the general developments in social, economic and political organization in the form of peer-to-peer networks and communities.

The articles here typically represent the absolute state of the art as it exists today. As such, they serve only as an inkling of what might be there in the future. Examples: Working with Wiki - Wiki from the Hawaiian word for quick - are on line platforms where anyone can make entries without supervision. The Grid - a worldwide collection of computers of (generally) extremely high performance that allow huge problems to be approached. At this time the Grid is quite small, only a handful of supercomputer centers, but it promises to change many of the ways we have approached computing.

5 out of 5 stars The State of the Art as it Exists Today.......2006-03-31

Computer gaming continues to grow at a very rapid rate. In fact much of the development of the new higher speed chips and of course the high performance video cards are being driven by the needs of the gaming people.

Computer gaming software also continues to grow, perhaps even faster than gaming itself. Because of the rapid state of software development, no one author could possibly keep up with all of the changes that are taking place.

So in this book Steve Rabin, of Nintendo of America has gotten almost sixty of the most advanced gaming software developers to write articles explaining the state of the art as they are helping to develop it. The writers come from a mix of software companies, universities, independent consultants, and game hardware developers. This is the state of the art in the development of artificial intelligence for games.

Beyond the Net, say Foster, Kesselman, and a host of impressive contributors, lies the Grid. While the Net allows users everywhere to share information, the Grid will allow users to share raw computing power. The goal is to put full supercomputing capabilities into the hands of anyone who needs it while providing for more efficient use of the supercomputers of tomorrow. The potential benefits to science, government, and business may well be beyond imagination.

Foster and Kesselman have gathered together essays, proposals, and ruminations of more than 30 distinguished stars of the high-speed computing and networking world in order to do four things: make the case for developing computational grids, provide ideas on how such grids may be designed, demonstrate how the grids might be used, and point out the research still needed to make it happen. While the book was written to serve as a possible textbook in advanced networking, it makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the future of network computing.

The text covers Grid applications, the programming tools required, the services that will be provided, and an examination of Grid infrastructure. Despite being the work of so many authors, the chapters are logically arranged so that the knowledge needed to understand one chapter is provided by those that precede it. --Elizabeth Lewis

Book Description

The Grid is an emerging infrastructure that will fundamentally change the way we think about-and use-computing. The word Grid is used by analogy with the electric power grid, which provides pervasive access to electricity and has had a dramatic impact on human capabilities and society. Many believe that by allowing all components of our information technology infrastructure-computational capabilities, databases, sensors, and people-to be shared flexibly as true collaborative tools the Grid will have a similar transforming effect, allowing new classes of applications to emerge.
-From the Preface

In 1998, Ian Foster and Carl Kesselman introduced a whole new concept in computing with the first edition of this book. Today there is a broader and deeper understanding of the nature of the opportunities offered by Grid computing and the technologies needed to realize those opportunities. In Grid 2, the editors reveal the revolutionary impact of large-scale resource sharing and virtualization within science and industry, the intimate relationships between organization and resource sharing structures and the new technologies required to enable secure, reliable, and efficient resource sharing on large scale.
Foster and Kesselman have once again assembled a team of experts to present an up-to-date view of Grids that reports on real experiences and explains the available technologies and new technologies emerging from labs, companies and standards bodies. Grid 2, like its predecessor, serves as a manifesto, design blueprint, user guide and research agenda for future Grid systems.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing but an Overview of Where Grids Are in 2003 and Where Could They Go.......2005-12-08

I am intensely interested in the current state of Grid technology (Dec. 2005) and want to begin an implementation or the participation of a modern Grid. I got the book yesterday and am now done with it. This book should never have had a second edition. I skimmed through all 748 pages in about one hour. It is repeat of topic after topic by different authors rehashing the same 'issues' that anyone who found this book has probably already learned as much in his Googling.

This is frustrating, WHERE IS THE MEAT!!!! in Grid technology. No one seems to have a decent book. Its almost 2006! Someone, teach me how to build a Grid and run Hello World on it please!

2 out of 5 stars Poor tech, poor future insights.......2005-04-07

Before buying this book, I also bought the first volume. Personally I would say the first one being more interesting and technically adequate to whom wants a professional insight on what grid computing is. The second book seemed to me a simple marketing strategy: no new topics, no technical insights. Just an annoying list of accomplished grid deployments ranging from scientific installments to commercial ones.
I'm actually disappointed. I was hoping Foster et. al. could give me some new and interesting insights on what are the real problems of advanced grid computing concepts and techniques instead, I received a book great only for making the references to my thesis (I was doing my master thesis on grid mapping algorithms).
Moreover, most of the deployed scenarios explained in the book can be easily find on the net by searching for scientific documents on specific grid topics. Seems more of a collage of articles rather than a deep analysis of actual grid challenges, techniques and pros&cons.
I would suggest such a book only to newby wanting to get an overview of what grid computing is and what has been done to date.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book into the future.......2004-01-29

This is a great buy and an excellent book into the future. Very well explained collection of topics.

4 out of 5 stars Hear the authors out.......2003-07-08

Boy, when was VA declared an imagination-free zone? Don't the critical reviewers of this book have any belief in the possibilities afforded by grid computing? To complain that the book is light on technical detail is somewhat churlish, because the purpose of the book was to examine the possibilities, not show you how to code one up in an afternoon at the comfort of your desk.

Can there be any doubt that computing grids will start to become popular in some form or another? I don't think there is any doubt at all. Perhaps when some of the research and early work is complete and the standards agreed, some enterprising author can write a book on grid computing with more technical meat on the bone, but until that work is done, what would be the point? I suspect there just isn't all that much technical detail to point at yet.

To my way of thinking, all the possible uses and configurations of computing grids are still to be discovered. If you are one of the explorers intent on doing something new and different with the technology, then this book is for you. If you are only content to follow the crowd, once all the technical details have been worked out and served up on a plate to you by somebody else, then by all means skip this book and wait for one with more technical gravitas.

5 out of 5 stars Startling look into the future.......2002-03-21

I don't understand some of the critical reviews of this book. The fact is that Grids do exist today and are being used by Research oriented companies. About two dozen companies are already serving clients in the realm of grid computing. Platform Computing, United Devices, and Avaki are just three companies who are helping to create the future of the grid computing. The web succeded because it connected everybody. Until larger grids are contructed for business enterprises I agree that grid computing will not grow. The book does a great job of showing what the future may be like in terms of grid computing. Someday your computing resources will come from your local Grid Computing Company just as you get electricity from your Power Company. How that comes to be is still the ultimate question.

Book Description

New technologies in engineering, physics and biomedicine are demanding increasingly complex methods of digital signal processing. By presenting the latest research work the authors demonstrate how real-time recurrent neural networks (RNNs) can be implemented to expand the range of traditional signal processing techniques and to help combat the problem of prediction. Within this text neural networks are considered as massively interconnected nonlinear adaptive filters.

Ø Analyses the relationships between RNNs and various nonlinear models and filters, and introduces spatio-temporal architectures together with the concepts of modularity and nesting

Ø Examines stability and relaxation within RNNs

Ø Presents on-line learning algorithms for nonlinear adaptive filters and introduces new paradigms which exploit the concepts of a priori and a posteriori errors, data-reusing adaptation, and normalisation

Ø Studies convergence and stability of on-line learning algorithms based upon optimisation techniques such as contraction mapping and fixed point iteration

Ø Describes strategies for the exploitation of inherent relationships between parameters in RNNs

Ø Discusses practical issues such as predictability and nonlinearity detecting and includes several practical applications in areas such as air pollutant modelling and prediction, attractor discovery and chaos, ECG signal processing, and speech processing

Recurrent Neural Networks for Prediction offers a new insight into the learning algorithms, architectures and stability of recurrent neural networks and, consequently, will have instant appeal. It provides an extensive background for researchers, academics and postgraduates enabling them to apply such networks in new applications.

I give this book 5 stars. It is a must have book, very well written. It has good balance between rigorous theory and authors reasonong regarding the subject.
I'm not a beginner in this field, and still I found a lot of interesting ideas, that can help not only to improve quality of the net, but also make you see "bigger picture".

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected insights that make you go: "Aha!".......2001-11-28

"Recurrent Neural Networks for Prediction: Learning Algorithms,
Architectures and Stability," approaches the field of recurrent neural networks from both a practical and a theoretical perspective. Starting from the fundamentals, where unexpected insights are offered even at the level of the dynamical richness of simple neurons, the authors describe many existing algorithms and gradually introduce novel ones. The latter are convicingly shown to yield better prediction performances than traditional approaches, when applied to real-world data. They also dedicate a considerable amount of time on the (practical) issue of nonlinearity analysis of time series, which is or should be, indeed, the cradle of all proper modelling and/or filtering solutions: nonlinearity should be assessed prior to choosing the appropriate model and/or filters, since linear ones are to be preferred if sufficient for the problem. I would recommend this book to any researcher who is active in the field of recurrent neural networks and time series analysis, but also to researchers who are new in the field, since the book offers an extensive overview of the current state-of-the-art approaches.

    Book Description

Past and current research in computer performance analysis has focused primarily on dedicated parallel machines. However, future applications in the area of high-performance computing will not only use individual parallel systems but a large set of networked resources. This scenario of computational and data Grids is attracting a great deal of attention from both computer and computational scientists. In addition to the inherent complexity of parallel machines, the sharing and transparency of the available resources introduces new challenges on performance analysis, techniques, and systems. In order to meet those challenges, a multi-disciplinary approach to the multi-faceted problems of performance is required. New degrees of freedom will come into play with a direct impact on the performance of Grid computing, including wide-area network performance, quality-of-service (QoS), heterogeneity, and middleware systems, to mention only a few.
Reflecting this new reality, the Dagstuhl Workshop on Performance Analysis and Distributed Computing, organized by members of the European Working Group APART, was designed to bring together researchers from both the high-performance computing and the distributed computing areas. Indeed, attendees with expertise in a variety of topics in computer and computational sciences arrived in Dagstuhl at the end of August 2002 to discuss the state-of-the-art and the future of computer performance research as it applies to systems, applications, and Grids.
Performance Analysis and Grid Computing comprises selected contributions encapsulating this scientifically rich event. The articles are organized in three parts: Performance Modeling and Analysis, Performance Tools and Systems, and Grid Performance and Applications. It will provide invaluable reading for researchers and developers in the areas of performance analysis, high-end computer systems, and Grid computing.

      Book Description

With VLSI chip transistors getting smaller and smaller, today's digital systems are more complex than ever before. This increased complexity leads to more cross-talk, noise, and other sources of transient errors during normal operation. Traditional off-line testing strategies cannot guarantee detection of these transient faults. And with critical applications relying on faster, more powerful chips, fault-tolerant, self-checking mechanisms must be built in to assure reliable operation.

Self-Checking and Fault-Tolerant Digital Design deals extensively with self-checking design techniques and is the only book that emphasizes major techniques for hardware fault tolerance. Graduate students in VLSI design courses as well as practicing designers will appreciate this balanced treatment of the concepts and theory underlying fault tolerance along with the practical techniques used to create fault-tolerant systems.

      * Introduces reliability theory and the importance of maintainability
      * Presents coding and the construction of several error detecting and correcting codes
      * Discusses in depth, the available techniques for fail-safe design of combinational circuits
      * Details checker design techniques for detecting erroneous bits and encoding output of self-checking circuits
      * Demonstrates how to design self-checking sequential circuits, including a technique for fail-safe state machine design

      Book Description

Defining a formal domain ontology is generally considered a useful, not to say necessary step in almost every software project. This is because software deals with ideas rather than with self-evident physical artefacts. However, this development step is hardly ever done, as ontologies rely on well-defined and semantically powerful AI concepts such as description logics or rule-based systems, and most software engineers are largely unfamiliar with these.

Gaševic and his co-authors try to fill this gap by covering the subject of MDA application for ontology development on the Semantic Web. Part I of their book describes existing technologies, tools, and standards like XML, RDF, OWL, MDA, and UML. Part II presents the first detailed description of OMG’s new ODM (Ontology Definition Metamodel) initiative, a specification which is expected to be in the form of an OMG language like UML. Finally, Part III is dedicated to applications and practical aspects of developing ontologies using MDA-based languages. The book is supported by a website showing many ontologies, UML and other MDA-based models, and the transformations between them.

"The book is equally suited to those who merely want to be informed of the relevant technological landscape, to practitioners dealing with concrete problems, and to researchers seeking pointers to potentially fruitful areas of research. The writing is technical yet clear and accessible, illustrated throughout with useful and easily digestible examples." from the Foreword by Bran Selic, IBM Rational Software, Canada.

        Book Description

Although Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) is generally thought of as a research area at the intersection of machine learning and computational logic, Bergadano and Gunetti propose that most of the research in ILP has in fact come from machine learning, particularly in the evolution of inductive reasoning from pattern recognition, through initial approaches to symbolic machine learning, to recent techniques for learning relational concepts. In this book they provide an extended, up-to-date survey of ILP, emphasizing methods and systems suitable for software engineering applications, including inductive program development, testing, and maintenance.

Inductive Logic Programming includes a definition of the basic ILP problem and its variations (incremental, with queries, for multiple predicates and predicate invention capabilities), a description of bottom-up operators and techniques (such as least general generalization, inverse resolution, and inverse implication), an analysis of top-down methods (mainly MIS and FOIL-like systems), and a survey of methods and languages for specifying inductive bias.

        Book Description

Looking to the future, Intelligent Skins sets out the principles for the design of the intelligent building envelope. It highlights an exciting new approach to the area, where the fabric of the building responds to external changes and internal demands.

The prime objective is to control internal environments through a responsive building fabric rather than by energy consuming building services systems. The authors examine the potential for integral intelligence within the fabric of the building and explore the evolution of information technology and smart materials which have allowed a whole new category of design principles to be created.

        * Gain a comprehensive knowledge of the evolution of the 'Intelligent Skin'
        * Explores a new approach to Intelligent Buildings, focusing on the fabric of the building responding to external changes and internal demands
        * Includes over twenty cutting-edge international case studies

        Book Description

Nonmonotonic reasoning provides formal methods that enable intelligent systems to operate adequately when faced with incomplete or changing information. In particular, it provides rigorous mechanisms for taking back conclusions that, in the presence of new information, turn out to be wrong and for deriving new, alternative conclusions instead. Nonmonotonic reasoning methods provide rigor similar to that of classical reasoning; they form a base for validation and verification and therefore increase confidence in intelligent systems that work with incomplete and changing information.

Following a brief introduction to the concepts of predicate logic that are needed in the subsequent chapters, this book presents an in depth treatment of default logic. Other subjects covered include the major approaches of autoepistemic logic and circumscription, belief revision and its relationship to nonmonotonic inference, and briefly, the stable and well-founded semantics of logic programs.

The book covers all aspects of default reasoning, nonmonotonic reasoning , autoepistemic logic and circumscription in sufficient details. A little background of first order predicate logic is adequate to read this rich and valuable text.I offer it to our graduate program on nonmonotonic reasoning at ETCE department, Jadavpur University, Calcutta. My research scholars also like the book very much especially for its clear but elegant presentation.
