Pretty Pictures no instruction.......2007-09-08
Very pretty pictures. Not what I was looking for. I want to see the step by step process not a list of what was used. Very very unsatisfying. I returned it. Not worth the money for nice photo's.
Book Description
The saga of Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, continues in PAPER DOLLS, writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra's award-winning VERTIGO series. In addition to catching up on the adventures of Yorick's monkey Ampersand (whose body holds the key to stopping the male-killing plague) and telling the origin of Agent 355, PAPER DOLLS chronicles Yorick and 355's search for Yorick's fiancee Beth in Australia -- a search that yields a large dose ofunwanted publicity for the Last Man, and deadly consequences for those he cares for!
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Yorick has finally arrived and is a position to look for Beth. However, he runs into a big problem when a journalist from a less than broadsheet quality newspaper finds out he is still alive, and is a story she definitely does not want to lose. He does eventually find Beth, and he certainly gets a hell of a surprise when he sees her.
A three-hour tour, with a stop in the outback........2007-05-12
Brian K. Vaughan, Y: The Last Man: Paper Dolls (Vertigo, 2006)
(Note: this review contains major spoilers for earlier books in the series. If you're not up to date with the series, and you plan to read it, don't read this review until after you've read book six.)
Vaughn's Y: The Last Man just keeps getting better as it goes on. Yorick and co. are on their way to Japan to search for the kidnapped Ampersand. This book focuses on a part of the trip where the crew stop in Australia to look for Yorick's missing girlfriend Beth. As always, Paper Dolls features almost nonstop action, but the action never gets in the way of character development. If the series stays this good, Vaughan will have created one for the ages. ****
Fantastic.......2006-12-26
The beat ongoing Vertigo series since Preacher keeps rolling along with Paper Dolls, which gives the answers to some questions as well as opening a whole new batch of new ones. Yorick, Agent 355, and Dr. Mann have finally arrived in Austrailia in search of Yorick's girlfriend Beth, only instead to find a journalist who plans on making Yorick's existence the headline of the century. Also in this volume, Yorick's other Beth who he had a fling with, is in a bit of an unexpected situation. Not to mention that Agent 355's origin is revealed, and Yorick's kidnapped pet monkey Ampersand (the only other living mammal on the planet) makes a break from his ninja kidnapper in Japan. Fans of the series pretty much know what to expect here in terms of the story and art, with Brian K. Vaughan further orchestrating the ever evolving story while dropping hints of what is to come here and there. Pia Guerra's art remains the solid work that you'd come to expect as well, and at the same time it's nothing spectacular. All in all, Y: The Last Man continues to be pure comic gold, and here's more proof.

Customer Reviews:
Great ideas for everyone........2007-04-16
I think this book has great ideas and styles for everyone. Some of the ideas are very simple that anyone could do (I am not an artsy/creative person at all), while other ideas are for the more crafty person.
This book was so helpful to me, I saved a lot of money and my invitations are much more personable and more my style than anything I could have bought at a store.
Must be crafty.......2007-04-12
I have found that I am obviously not very crafty. The book tries to lay out the details on how to make the invitations for those of us that are crafty challenged. I decided that there was to much work involved with making your own invitations. There are very nice designs in the book for those people that are willing to put the time and effort into making the invitations.
Wedding Invitations.......2007-03-08
I was looking for more formal invitation options. The term "artful" is correct in the title, for they were crafty. I did not find them to be "stylish" according to my taste.
Helpful.......2007-02-21
This is a nice book. However, it would have been even better if there were more invitation styles included in the book.
Fun and creative ideas.......2006-11-10
This book has a lot of creative ideas for sending out your standard wedding invitation. None of them are extremely hard (though I would skip the one that has your photo plastered onto some sort of zippered card).
Book Description
Paper Engineering explores graphic design that extends beyond 2D. From the simplest fold in a letterhead to the structural intricacies of a pop-up book, the construction of 3D paper objects requires as much input as the surface decoration.
This stylish and inspirational book unfolds the conceptual complexities of paper engineering, studying the techniques of eminent designers in Europe, Japan and the USA. Case studies are illustrated with photographs of finished work, as well as detailed diagrams and commentary. Paper Engineering also explores the functions of paper architecture in graphic design, ranging from pop-up books, invitations and point-of-sale to packaging.

Book Description
A longtime teacher of the art, whose work has appeared in galleries and publications, shares her intense enthusiasm and knowledge in a lavishly illustrated guide to techniques, materials (specialty papers, crayons, inks, waxes, graphite), and projects. She shows how to make rubbing projects with children, create souvenirs while traveling, and store and display the finished work.
Customer Reviews:
Fresh, comprehensive, and unusual.......2007-03-23
It's not easy to find a really good book about making rubbings. In fact, this is the only one I've seen.
This art form is accessible to almost everyone, yet few realize the resources around them.
"Making Paper & Fabric Rubbings..." covers a wealth of ideas and techniques. You'll enjoy this at home, but especially as you travel. If you keep a diary or journal, you'll find wonderful new ways to illustrate it with rubbings. If you're a fabric artist, rubbings can be great material for unusual quilts and wall hangings.
Even better, once you start making rubbings, you'll look at the world in a different way. You'll notice more than colors and shapes, but also textures.
I go through a lot of books. Some delight me at first, and then I don't refer to them again. This one is a keeper.
"Hard" is relative -- "Sketchy": Hardly! + GREAT PIX !!!.......2007-02-20
Yo,
I got one of these for my artist sister, then read the surprisingly high-ranking tempest-in-teapot review below, and immediately perused the book, including especially the "Methods" chapter. This title definitely rates 5 stars, without reservation.
First of all for the *superb* color reproductions of a huge variety of exceptional rubbings (i.e., rubbings of exceptionally beautiful objects).
Then I read the Methods chapter sections -- comprising 5 or 6 diverse methods (including wet and dry paper techniques and even Gyotaku -- Japanese "Fish Printing"!). Each is spelled out step-by-numbered-step (with up to 9 steps), including preservation -- of both the rubbing and the rubbed object.
"Sketchy"?? The first Methods chapter page sez it all: Here are the simple basics, now try them on a variety of objects around the house, and you'll quickly learn about the major problems and challenges (listed FYI), and the medium's opportunities. 'Nuff said, now go out and try your hand at one or more of the "field trip" methods so fully spelled out. This ain't rocket science, it's quick ramp-up fun!
The book also discusses rubbing's history, kids' projects, papers, crayons etc., and lays out a dozen crafts projects -- all on shiny white paper, compleat with pre-printed bookplate on the front fly!
What's not to like, or more to ask for?!? DO get this bargain title (through Marketplace resellers) if you're the slightest bit interested in this fascinating and potentially hugely educational craft medium. Enjoy, enjoy!...
Intriguing Art Form.......2000-11-15
Rubbings of Gravestones have been an art form for centuries and Ms. Firestein has researched her medium thoroughly. I just wished she had gone into more detail on how to begin. She needs to include details for first-timers. Her instructions were very sketchy and hard to follow.

Customer Reviews:
Better Pages from Better Cropping!.......2007-08-30
I didn't think that Memory Makers would be able to top the original book, "Memory Makers Creative Photo Cropping for Scrapbooks", but they did with this book! Instead of presenting the first book with some slight modifications, Memory Makers generated all new cropping ideas and examples. Both of these books will be of value to anyone who scrapbooks. I guarantee that this is not the same old scrapbook publication.
Great Photo Cropping Ideas.......2007-08-03
So many wonderful and useful cropping ideas. I've tried them and my scrapbook pages are too good to be true. These unusual crops truly made my pages a work of art.
Cutting Edge Photo Cropping for Scrapbooks.......2007-03-09

Great ideas to liven up scrapbook pages!.......2007-01-09
This is a book provides new ideas for cropping to enhance your scrapbooks. The page descriptions are clear and easy to understand. This is a good book for the intermediate scrapbooker.
Another great buy.......2006-09-11
As always with these kinds of books - another great read and guide for scrapbookers!

Paper Engineering: 3D Techniques for a 2D Material.......2007-10-10
Every popup technique is actually demonstrated with a small example! This book has saved me so much time and frustration - excellent reference for anyone who creates popup books!
Practical, Well Designed Learning Tool.......2007-08-22
This book is really a well thought out workbook. The pages are designed so you cut out and assemble the pop-ups, then paste them into the book as a resource. You might want to get two, or to copy the flat page before you cut it out to have a reference for what you started with. All this said, this is an excellent, well thought out learning tool, and because YOU do the assembly, you learn more and pay less. I might have wished for line drawings with more examples of how the pop-ups could be used, but that is a very small quibble, about an outstanding book.
I'm a little disappointed.......2007-07-20
A little disappointed with this book. It is a good place for beginners to start, but doesnt go into the more technical aspects of pop-up construction. The ideas for shapes and pop-ups are explained, followed by a cut/fold/paste model you can put together yourself. However, there are no formulas given about what degrees of angles can be used, what the ratio of the planes to the bases are. Not a bad book, just not as advanced as I had hoped based on the cover drawing. Yes...I judged the book by it's cover :)
Awesome Book.......2007-03-21
This book is awesome -- teaching you the principles of paper engineering so you can make countless creations.
Artsy-Craftsy, not just Artsy.......2007-03-17
The book contains templates from which one is able to base designs, which is nice, however most of the designs were not exactly what I was wanting. Everything is kind of basic and "craftsy", whereas I was searching for something more art-oriented, more detailed and creative. Thankfully, I bought this with another, which exceeded all my expectations. The title of that book is The Pop-Up Book: Step-by-Step Instructions for Creating over 100 Original Paper Projects.
Book Description
Through hundreds of eye-popping reproductions, All Wrapped Up! celebrates gift wrap that most ephemeral of paper products from the groovy 1960s. The modest palette and conventional patterns of the previous decade eventually yielded to the riotous colors, op art, and psychedelic visions that defined the late '60s, charting a course through the entire spectrum of mid-century graphic design and commercial illustration. Popular imagery of cute animals, adorable children, barbecue iconography for dad, funky florals, and Santas of every stripe grace these pages. A thoughfully wrapped present is a gift in itself, and All Wrapped Up! is the perfect package to celebrate the popular designs of the most visually exuberant decade of all.

A perfect little coffee table art book. Lots of great, colourful scans and not much annoying text...unique and fun!
1960s "Adult Kids re-Collecting Our Childhood" Must Have!.......2006-06-29
I hardly ever write a review here, but I ordered this book for myself for Christmas 2005 and have been looking at it probably weekly since then. As a 43 year old child of 1962 and collector of everything 1950s, 60s, and 70s, this book brought SUCH a smile to my face when I initially flipped through it and has continued to bring joy. For those of us who truly relish images/graphics/design styles from our past -- feed your brain with THIS book and feel your dopamine and serotonin levels spill all over themselves as you take that trip down memory lane into Christmases, birthdays, and baby/bridal showers past! Then, buy a copy for all of your retro type friends!
wow!.......2006-01-04
this book is amazing! i don't know how they found all these incredible patterns! the book is just jam packed with those fun wrapping papers from the 60's. a great gift for any pop-arty design fan!!!
Groovy Gift - Gotta Get this Book!.......2005-05-04
This book will bring back so many memories. If you're 40 something, you'll want a copy for yourself, one for your parents and more for your 40-something friends. It's a scrapbook of the groovy generation and the perfect gift for the person who thinks he has everything! All Wrapped Up is a gorgeous book. My kids loved looking through it. It sparked a lot of conversation about what it was like to live in the 1960's.
You'll not only remember every birthday you had in the 60s but you'll start to remember songs you forgot, commercials you saw on television and the gifts you received. This wonderful book is a treasure.
KEEP THIS OUT ON THE COFFEE TABLE!.......2005-04-10
A most delightful look at 1960s! I have to say, as an artist, I ripped-off a couple of the cool ideas I found on the pages of this book! The Christmas section if wonderful and the animal section is ultra hip with a lot of retro creatures to conjur up a few smiles. Lots of beautiful patterns in the flower power section and the masculine section is a laugh out loud! The author gives a nice overview of the industry and there is a concise little history of 60s design in the front. I never write reviews but I really did love this book!

Book Description
This follow-up to the Paper Rad collective's recent hit, Paper Rad, B.J. and da Dogs, is both a return to form and a move forward. Comic strips, psychedelic imagery and the group's trademark lo-fi digital wizardry lend Pig Tales Digest the feeling of an old-school variety show. Bounding from stories, to suites of gag cartoons, to drawings of Alf, Miss Piggy and other pixillated creatures, this book literally ricochets between silly humor and serious satire, raising the house style of exuberant digital Neo-Primitivism to new heights. This well-priced, accessible sampler, featuring an introduction by the artist Donald Baechler, is sure to reach a wide audience.

Customer Reviews:
Eye-opening intro to illustration for technical wordsmiths.......2001-04-21
I bought this book when it was freshly published. At the time, I had written software and hardware documentation for two years. I'd made some clumsy attempts to add illustrations (beyond screen shots) to my manuals, but my results were clearly amateurish. Horton's book was the right mix of theory and practical application for me to quickly improve my illustrations. From this book, I began to develop a sense of when and how to use illustration in lieu of text and to supplement text. I also learned several rules of thumb for effective presentation of illustrations in my manuals.
This book didn't make me a graphic artist. Instead, it gave me the vocabulary and mindset I needed to learn more -- sometimes just by looking at the work of an experienced graphic artist. The foundation Horton gave me continues to serve me well, for which I am grateful.
A superb book, well-researched and easy to understand.......1999-01-06
No matter what your background or previous design experience, this insightful book will help you design better documents, both online and in print. First selling the importance of visual communication, Horton goes on to explain what elements are required for effective visual communication. Horton extensively cites the results of scholarly research but proffers an easily understood masterpiece from which any reader will benefit.
