Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
In the perennial favorite Boundaries, Anne Katherine introduced the concept and importance of personal limits. In Where to Draw the Line, she takes the next step with a practical guide to establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries in a wide range of situations.
With every encounter, we either demonstrate that we'll protect what we value or that we'll give ourselves away. Healthy boundaries preserve our integrity. Unlike defenses, which isolate us from our true selves and from those we love, boundaries filter out harm.
This book provides the tools and insights needed to create boundaries so that we can allow time and energy for the things that matter -- and helps break down limiting defenses that stunt personal growth. Focusing on every facet of daily life -- from friendships and sexual relationships to dress and appearance to money, food, and psychotherapy -- Katherine presents case studies highlighting the ways in which individuals violate their own boundaries or let other people breach them. Using real-life examples, from self-sacrificing mothers to obsessive neat freaks, she offers specific advice on making choices that balance one's own needs with the needs of others.
Boundaries are the unseen structures that support healthy, productive lives. Where to Draw the Line shows readers how to strengthen them and hold them in place every day.

Healthy Boundaries.......2007-09-14
This book is very well-written in easy-to-understand language. After reading this, I have a very clear idea of healthy boundaries and am now able to discern when boundaries are being violated. Definitely worth reading.
Inane psychology.......2007-09-10
I was very excited at the prospect of learning more about setting boundaries. However, this book was so low level and inane that I ended up just throwing the book into the trash. If anything, this book should have been titled "Intro to Boundaries if you have never heard of boundary setting."
Everyone needs to read this at least once.......2007-08-10
I work with people that have manipulators in their lives and their biggest struggle is boundaries and personal identity. It is very difficult to help a person understand this topic when it is so lacking in that persons life. This book makes this subject very easy to understand and apply to ones own life. If you think you don't have a manipulator in you life, read this book and see how fast you change your mind. The author is very non-judgmental and compassionate to everyone's preferences. There are no bad guys in this book. I love that!
Very helpful book..........2007-07-25
I love the great advice in this book. I'm learning how to keep people from walking all over me. It will take some time and effort but with this book I think I can overcome some of my problems in this area.
Excellent, excellent book!.......2007-06-12
Do you ever wonder how it is that people seem to walk all over you? Do you have a difficult time saying no? Are you perpetually overextended and running on empty? In clear, plain language and with easy to understand examples this book points out new ways to respond to old situations in a way that makes sense and will change your life. I recommend this book to any and all of my friends who seem to be struggling with the boundaries in their life. Understanding limits, how to set them, maintain them and respect them is a crucial key to self-maintenance and enjoying life.

Would Not Buy.......2005-12-07
Not helpful for me. It contained mostly definitions of terms, no useful follow thru information. Other books I have found are more percise.
Author of Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens.......2005-09-26
I have been a therapist in private practice for over twenty years working mostly with teens and their parents. This book is very well written, and I would recommend it to struggling parents. Setting limits and finding the strength to set them, with today's demanding teen takes work! Ms. Bluestein shows us how.
A self evaluation.......2004-04-08
I found this book to be more of a self evaluation of oneself. I found it frequently brought up memories from my childhood experiences , some O.K., some not. Lots of self evaluation questions. It made me think some of the difficulties I was experiencing with my childs behavior stemmed from my own reactions based on my experiences. It is very hard to detach oneself from your own history. It does bring up some good points but I do not agree with a few items. It seems to refer mostly to older teens and not as much to younger teens ( 13-14). It does get you thinking though and so one can get good things from it.
On target.......1999-03-23
I have been doing family therapy for 15+ years. This is by far the best book I have ever seen for parents of teenagers. I almost always recommend it. And I sure wish I had had it to read when my kids were teens. The biggest problem is it's hard to find. Now that I see that Amazon has it, that's no longer a problem.
Good ideas for raising kids of all ages.......1999-01-25
An empowering book for parents. Written in an easy-to-read conversational text, this book has plenty of good ideas. It teaches how to raise children without using anger, judgment or manipulation. It even includes suggested exercises so that you can use what you learn in a very personal way. I'd recommend it! Elizabeth Pantley, author of Kid Cooperation, Perfect Parenting, and Parent Tips Newsletters
Book Description
Now in a new, 60-day journal format, this program introduces a super-simple, four-step process that teaches aspiring artists how to develop drawing skills in as little as two months. In a humorous, down-to-earth tone, the innovative system breaks down complex classical concepts and leads novices through basic elements of drawing such as line, shape, value, and texture. Building both confidence and skill as they work their way through the exercises, students learn how to see shapes, lines, and contour, in addition to how to shade, create texture gradation, and draw from photographs. An accompanying DVD demonstrates the presented techniques.

Great Way to Learn.......2007-08-07
Have just been using this book for 10 days and can already see amazing progress and improvement. I have never had an art lesson but always wanted to learn. I an sure that with continued practice I will get where I never dreamed I could.
Sandi's system works wonders.......2007-03-31
I am a person who could not draw a straight line. My efforts at art were pathetic. I thought I was hopeless. But Sandi's method has helped me immensely. Anyone who follows the instructions, and does each step, should not fail. It depends on how much time you give it (practice, practice, practice) and how closely you follow the instructions. Even my 12 year old daughter gets amazing results when following Sandi's teaching. You will be amazed how using some simple techniques will turn you into an artist.
drawing instructions.......2007-02-03
Her book and method is amazing. She teaches us we all can draw if we really want to, it is only our own inhibitions preventing us from doing what we love. Her methos allows us all to draw fairly realistic even if you are more of an impressionist. Good for young and old. Gives many hours of enjoyment.
First class workbook - buy it!.......2006-10-01
If you are looking for a workbook this is one of two that I would highly recommend. I gave this excellent book four stars instead of five because I doubt that a real beginner would miraculously develop professional skills from it alone, despite the claims. BUY IT ANYWAYS. The instructions are basic, but sufficient. I am partway through the exercises, and this book has helped my skills a great deal even in ten or so quick exercises (and I have many more to do!). This workbook will show you how to really draw what you see - truely - and that's about it. You draw right in the book, though I cut the pages out to make the process easier. There are plenty of exercises, so you can develop with practice, instead of "wham! Bam!, Now you are an Artist!". I love the new techniques that I am learning. Definately buy this book for what it is - a workbook that will painlessly teach you some solid drawing skills.
I CAN DRAW!!!.......2006-09-22
Don't hesitate on buying Sandra Angelo's books, videos, or tools. Her approach to teaching drawing has opened a whole new world for me. I've nearly completed the "So You Thought You Couldn't Draw" book of drawings using Sandra's step-by-step technique and I'm completely astounded at my progress. As a beginner that could only draw stick figures and two-dimensional cats and dogs, I can now draw flowers, landscapes, and a variety of animals that one can actually recognize. Also, Sandra's videos are a must while working through the book. Using the book and videos together, Sandra clearly describes her techniques, gradually moving the student through a series of exercises that quickly shows results. The tools Sandra recommends and sells are proven and the best quality for a reasonable price. It took the pressure off of me to decide what tools would produce the best drawing. I intend to move onto to Sandra's Exploring Colored Pencils book and videos and then onto mastering the art of faces and the human figure. I'm also very excited about applying my newfound talent to art quilts too.

Very Different! There's Not Another Book Like This!.......2004-12-16
As a parent and Sunday school teacher, I am constantly on the lookout for new material to help students. When I discovered this book, the title drew me in immediately; but the content was incredible. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. When I finished it, I ordered enough for my entire Sunday school class. So far, every student that has finished the book has given the most incredible feedback I have heard from any book over the past few years. I highly recommend this book!
Awesome - This book blew my mind!.......2004-12-16
I was so excited to finally get a copy of this book. After reading this book, I was totally blown away! It completely changed the way I think about dating and relationships. I have been telling everyone I know about this book. I honestly feel that every student and parent needs to read this book!
Finally! An answer you can't argue with!.......2004-12-16
I am so glad that someone had the guts to write this book from this perspective. I was so encouraged by the author's story and his teachings. I totally connected with the author and loved how he just knocks you over the head with a bold new truth based on scripture that cannot be argued! Don't miss out on this one!
Absolutely Amazing - A must read!.......2004-12-16
How Far Is Too Far? Is a powerful and direct approach to the issue concerning sexual purity. It will challenge you to look at this age-old question in a fresh and creative way. The end result is a new theology of sexuality and how God sees His children in that light. How Far Is Too Far? is a must read for every family with young adults, students, and teenagers!
I wish I had read this earlier!.......2004-12-16
I've been going to church for years and this is the first book I have read concerning pre-marital intimacy that I felt the author had the right to give me advice. He really put his heart on the line and shared a part of his life before he began to teach what God had revealed to him. As a high school varsity cheerleader there is constant peer-pressure to succumb to the temptations of pre-marital relations. Trust me when I say, 'I wish I had read this book earlier.' I have had countless discussions with my pastor and youth minister about overcoming sexual temptations and no one has ever provided answers as clear as the author did in this book. The author's personal story gave me a new outlook on life and myself. I now know that I am worthy of what God has in store for my life and that I will NOT settle for anything less. I hope that my review will cause one extra person to read this book - It will change your life... It did mine!
Book Description
1999 saw two major international crises which, looked at side-by-side by Noam Chomsky, starkly illuminate the strategies of the Western powers in the new century. In this volume Chomsky convincingly argues that humanitarianism was not the moving force behind NATO's intervention in Yugoslavia, and that there, as in East Timor, strategic concerns were dominant and the fate of civilian populations incidental.
Customer Reviews:
Can't Argue With Facts.......2003-03-13
(...). I had always towed the party line about the evil Serbs and their misdeeds, but have changed my tune after reading this enlightening, if disturbing book. Some may accuse Chomsky of being an apologist for Serb atrocities, but it is clear after reading this text that all sides, most notably NATO, were engaged in quite troublesome behavior that cost many thousands of lives. I heard Bill O' Reilly dismiss Chomsky as a "revisionist," and it is sadly interesting that most critics of this and similar works simply stick a "communist", "liberal", or "revisionist" label on the author without ever addressing the points made within the work. If you are looking for a wealth of facts on deceitful and imperialist American policy in Serbia/Yugoslavia and Indonesia/East Timor, I doubt if a better source could be found.
Odious comparisons.......2002-02-13
Here Chomsky compares and contrasts the responses of western governments (specifically, those of Clinton's USA and Blair's Britain) to two instances of "ethnic cleansing", both of which received extensive media attention at the end of the millennium. In Kosovo, there was NATO intervention, a 78-day bombing campaign, and a much-publicised war crimes tribunal; in East Timor, at the very most, a few regretful shakes of the head and perhaps the suspicion that we are not, as yet, quite living up to our high ideals of truth, justice and liberty. Chomsky collates some of the facts underlying this apparent irony and shows that, as usual, the paradox has a rather simple solution. For example: (1) The indictment against Milosevic confines itself largely to crimes committed after the bombing began; it seems logical to assume that (a) "ethnic cleansing" in Kosovo was not a major motivation for the bombing, and (b) any crimes committed before the bombing are not a major concern of our new generation of moral crusaders. Nevertheless, on the grounds that they sanctioned and participated in "ethnic cleansing", Milosevic and his cronies have been routinely portrayed as the worst enemies of human life and moral decency since Adolf Hitler. (2) The 1999 massacre in East Timor (much advertised in advance as the inevitable consequence if a referendum concerning independence from Indonesia should go the wrong way) was the latest episode in an extremely well-documented record of slaughter dating from the Indonesian invasion of 1975. All the atrocities, including the accession to power of the Indonesian leader Suharto in 1965, with its attendant third of a million casualties, were carried out with western backing and with US armament and training. The solution to that paradox, then, is obvious: the west has, as is traditional, no problem with genocide just so long as it's done by the right people. Chomsky is adept at drawing out the salient points (e.g. the timing of the Serbian war crimes indictment noted above) from voluminous and often skewed information; and, as befits a scientist, his sources of evidence are painstakingly documented. The focus on two contrasted sets of events throws the Standards of the West into sharp and unpleasant perspective.
Never more relevant!.......2002-01-08
Chomsky uses the NATO bombing of Milosevic as a framework for analyzing the direction of Western foreign policy, specifically in East Timor. While NATO (remember, not UN) forces were destroying non-military targets and infrastructure in the name of a "just cause", US sponsored paramilitaries were rampaging through E Timor slaughtering thousands. It is the awareness of this hypocrisy (as well as the well documented FACT that NATO bombing would worsen the humanitarian crisis it was designed to alleviate) that forms the framework for his analysis. With recent events in the world (easy to predict for those of us who actually know our own foreign policy, our history, and the history of the regions and people in question) Chomsky is one of the few, non PC, intellectuals who are willing to actually hold their own nation to the standards that we hold other nations to. Not surprisingly, CNN, Fox, and the other worthless entertainment disseminators masquerading as flag-waving "news" outlets refuse to cover the obvious issues raised by Chomsky (or Zinn, Fisk, Pilger, Nader, Roy, Herman, Said; the list is much to long to list). Oh well, its just the bodies and misery of the "evildoers" (read: Bush Daddy's old friends who no longer know their place) that are piling up in the name of corporate US hegemony. Also, beware of negative reviews like the one above (nothing wrong with negative reviews, but it woiuld be nice if they would at least attempt to deal with and refute Chomsky's thesis) that quote passages completely out of context.
Another Chomsky classic.......2001-09-24
This is Chomsky at his continued best. His insight into and knowledge on American's involvement in Kosovo and East Timor is once again unparalled by other intellectuals. Chomsky is one of the most important assets to truth and knowledge ever to exist.
Old wine, New bottles.......2001-09-17
This is scholar and public servant Noam Chomsky at his analytic best. The focus is "new internationalism where the brutal repression of whole ethnic groups will no longer be tolerated," as thunderingly stated by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Never content with rhetoric, Chomsky examines the record of new internationalism for actual results, paticularly in test cases like East Timor, Kosovo, and NATO member Turkey with its repressed Kurdish population. The tone is sober, the style searching, the results depressing for a new millenium, demonstrating that more of the same old bloody double-standard wine is being served, this time in new rhetorical bottles. There's no need to editorialize on the professor's findings. They speak eloquently for themselves. Instead a salute is due him: his tireless ongoing pursuit of truth, pleasant or not, his refusal to bow down before the gods of government and media, his steady deep regard for the powerless and voiceless - all in modest, accessible fashion - recommend him as the conscience of the nation and the hope of a better America.

Nice art and practical drawing book!.......2005-12-05
This book is strong in the anatomy section, including muscles and figure drawing. It also supplies great examples and art about making comics, and would go well with the Wizard basic training book, and the Andy Smith book, Dynamic Comic books. The author supplies good examples for the establishing shot. There are many other ideas and concepts, and it is quite diverse. This is what makes it unique. The gesture drawings are as powerful as the ones by Karl Gnass (Spirit of the Pose), specifically the drawings on pages 112-113. Gnass is also a great gestural artist. The book is geared for both professionals and beginners. Though the Manga section is officially covered in few pages, I believe the entire book will help the Manga artist (for instance the perspective part)as manga artists draw in many styles. There are manys tips and well worth the price of the book. I have quite a few art books and this one goes well with them.
Other books to consider would be the Chelsea book on perspective, and the Jack Hamn books.
Manga, anatomy, watercolors, animals and more!.......2005-06-29
I found this book to be worthwhile. You can follow along with the exercises or you can simply admire the great art, especially the pen and ink and pencil work. The anatomy pages are well done and the author supplies well over 28 pages on this area alone. The concepts and tips are very useful. The animal section is approximately 14 pages, with some nice tips on drawing different styles, specifically on gorillas. The running horse, the cantor, on page 87, was helpful. The manga section is covered in about 8 informative pages. the graphic effects page was interesting. Overall I recommend the book because of the excellent art and the easy to understand and follow text. The watercolor story was beautifully executed, 11 or so pages.
great book.......2004-08-24
Theres alot of info and drawings in this book, well worth the
price. Mr. soltero also gives some good tips that you won't find in other books that obviously come from experience. Something you
will also notice is the use of more ethnic features and bodies.
As well as different body types. Something really lacking in the
how-to art books of today. I like alot of the tone work Mr. Soltero does with pen and brush. Whats really interesting about
this book is the collection of pictures, they run from fine art
to cartoon, anime, and watercolor. Its pretty neat to see all
this in one book, something i have'nt seen in any others.
Which makes Mr soltero a very talented artist to me.
Awesome book.......2004-06-13
This book is a great. It covers information that you might not find in other books, copyright info., characters and scripts, duo tone. The drawings are beautiful, especially the animal and human drawings. The perspective section was helpful as I have dreaded and feared learning perspective. He shows you concisely how to do it. I followed along and was able to do it! The overlapping concept on pg. 37 is just great, it truly helped my drawing. The sequential art section is good for storytelling, and the inking page shows you the direction or how to move your brush or get the brush stroke you want.
This book is great for beginners and professionals. It is easy to read and the drawings are just great.
The book is a limited edition, and my copy came signed. Hey, this book has quotes in the back cover from Dr. Seuss and Frank Frazetta.
Excellent Drawing Book.......2004-04-28
The most helpful sections dealt with human anatomy, storytelling, and sequential art. The sequential art section dealt with different viewpoints, and explanations on splash pages. I am an animator and graphic artist and I recommend to all artists. The perspective section was also informative. The manga section has few pages but the author provided different ways to draw a manga figure, easy to complex styles.

Very timely,very helpful-but too late for Clinton & Currie........1998-12-17
DeMars is practical, practical, practical. She tackles the most confudling dilemmas at work and provides an ethical compass to resolve them. You can always quit, but why not resolve the dilemmas and keep your job, too? I didn't always agree with her, but DeMars got me talking to my coworkers and my boss about what was the best solution-which was exactly DeMars' purpose for writing the book in the first place, I suspect. Yes, sometimes good employees do bad things--so here's what you do when it happens.
Very practical guide to resolving ethical dilemmas at work........1998-09-21
Bettie Currie, Fawn Hall, and Rosemary Woods needed this book. So did I. Lots of us face ethical choices that keep us up at night, or cause us to wince inside. DeMars uses lots of real-life examples to help us resolve the common dilemmas we find every day at work -- dilemmas about confidentiality, loyalty, office romance, harassment, information manipulation -- it's all here.
She also coaches us about how to get the ethics discussion going -- without losing our jobs.
My favorite chapters were on lying (only very little lies told for social convention and very large lies told to save lives are OK) and "the trouble with the boss" (here's how to talk to him about his profanity, disrespect, lies, thievery, harassment, whatever). DeMars says high ethics boosts productivity and retention of customers and employees, then shows us how to have those long-overdue conversations about how we treat each other. A great book, period. I am so clear now about where I need to draw "that line" between what I will and will not do, and I am so confident about how to do it.

Excellent reference.......2005-07-28
Nan was ahead of her time in providing guidelines for frontline employees struggling with ethical dilemmas. She offers real-world examples of how workers are expected to go along to get along--and how that can jeopardize their careers and make them vulnerable to legal action. The book is very readable and the average person can easily relate to the stories she tells. Most important, she offers usable advice for handling touchy situations. I interviewed Nan several years ago and continue to use her book as a reference when writing about business ethics. I hope she'll consider writing an encore--especially in light of the recently publicized corporate scandals.
Very Useful.......2000-11-24
I got this book at a discount table and almost put it down when I realized it was geared toward office professionals ( I work in social services) and I am so glad I decided to risk it. The scenarios she uses, as well as the tips she gives, fit for all sorts of people in a variety of fields. The book is well written and easy to read and understand.
More useful than $5,000 worth of ethics seminars........1997-07-02
This is the only book on business ethics I've found that skips the preaching and focuses on the practical. Office romance, confidentiality, loyalty, harassment, deception, games -- it's all here. This is, I think, the missing link between the lofty-sounding corporate values statements and the day-to-day behaviors that affect customers, vendors, and coworkers. DeMars says that doing the right thing on a personal level is the smartest, shortest path to a more profitable enterprise. She shares more than 100 true-life scenarios from her consulting experiences to support her points. For example, she tackles the tough questions of when is it OK to lie, when and how do you hold someone accountable for his/her behavior, and how can managers and subordinates recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas. Managers need this book as much as office assistants. Finally, I found the style of writing very readable and credible. I've attended a half-dozen expensive seminars for senior managers that lauded ethical business practices, but they were too long on theory and overlooked the implementation at the office level. The devil really is in the details when it comes to making decisions about behaviors, says DeMars. She gets it right, right away. This book would have saved -- and will save me -- lots of money and time. A very solid piece of work

"Finally! A handbook for the critical job of protecting the freedom of our churches, our children, and our nation -. tells us how to take a firm Christian stand with wisdom and reason."
Melody Green Sievright
Last Days Ministries
The past fifty years of American history have witnessed a remarkable steamrolling of Christian values and beliefs. It seems the media both perpetuates and chronicles increasingly bolder attacks as Christian liberties are ignored and violated. Christians feel themselves pushed beyond limits and, too often, do not know how to respond.
Constitutional lawyer Michael Farris has represented Christians in many of the best-known religious freedoms cases of the 1980s and early '90s. Where Do I Draw the Line? offers solid, practical advice. With principles and steps of action, Christians will be able to respond effectively and with integrity when faced with wrongful pressure coming from the institutions related to their jobs, communities, and schools that are supposed to protect and serve them.
Overviews on today's most pressing issues job harassment, Christian and home schooling, church-zoning restrictions and counseling liabilities, parental rights and public education will be explored. Readers will discover the best way to fight for their rights and freedoms, how to decide if litigation is advisable, how to find the best legal help, and how to maintain a peaceful manner in the process.

On the mark!.......2000-11-30
This book summarizes our often manipulated rights as Americans for freedom to follow Christian values. More impressive is the accuracy in describing how we, as Americans, have lost touch with why/how our country was founded. I recommend to all those who seek more information about our constitutional rights to follow established principles and how these principles are routinely trampled. This book inspired me, especially in light of the recent presential election.
