Daily Inspiration.......2007-09-12
I bought this book along with another of Melody's. I think she is a very caring and understanding person and this book gives me daily readings to keep up my spirits and know that I am not alone and I can fix my own problems. I wasn't expecting a daily devotional type of book, but I am so glad now that I have it. They say one day at a time.. and right now that's what I'm giving.
Ok.......2007-08-03
Not what I expected it to be. More religious than I prefer and definately works with the AA platform which wasn't what I wanted.
Great inspiration - I love it.......2007-06-03
Melody Beattie has an amazing way of inspiring and clarifying. I have loved everything that I have read of hers....Definitely buy this!
Recovery for Anyone a Woman or Man.......2007-05-17

Full of unsubstantiated statements.......2007-09-24
This book is full of generalizations and unsubstantiated statements. Even looking at the back cover you can tell it did not get much backing from serious people (the praise comes from other authors of similar books, not from researchers or universities, and the authors are not antropologists or sociologists, just regular people). You will find many statements like "90% of all people use a palms up handshake" without any studies or anything else to back that up. In general, it's like reading USA Today, no more, no less.
Great Book!.......2007-09-04

Secrets of non-verbal communication.......2007-09-01
If you read a lot of business books, this one is must have in your repertoire. It is a combination of lessons on manners, subconscious mind and communication. If anything, one will learn what is it that makes men and women different in the workplace and social gatherings, how to "read" people's reactions based on their body language and there are even helpful hints on how to diffuse conflict, uncertainty, or fend contempt from co-workers and superiors. One will learn good sales and negotiation tricks that are helpful during interview process, or office politics and power play. For well rounded business person, this book is a must have. Add to it work on NLP, emotional intelligence and business ethics and one can conquer it all. While some may find this book to be a tool on teaching manipulation, others will find it to be a useful too on staying ahead of the game. The only disagreement I have with the authors is in reference to the use of cell phone during interview process. I totally disagree that it is acceptable to act "busy and important" during interview process regardless if one is in the waiting area or in the room with the person interviewing them. If person interviewing you would rather take a phone call than listen to what you have to say during scheduled interview time, it is a sign that your interview is either not going well or you have lost the game already to another candidate. Why get more vulgar and add oil to the fire by making or receiving cell phone call. Your cell phone should be off (or in your car) while you are in the interview room. I am sure that any career coach or human resources professional will agree with me on this point.
Open your eyes to the hidden language.......2007-08-26
People in general can not hold back their body language when they feel strongly about an issue. As a Marketing major in college, I am finding observing the body language signals discussed in this book really does apply to the thoughts and feelings a person is feeling. You will be amazed by how you will look at people differently, more perceptively. A lot of times you will find that people are really feeling differently than you thought after a conversation just based on body language alone. Remeber any given message is 55% physical expresstions, 38% vocal (pitch), and 7% words alone. This book will indeed give you an advantage in every social interaction, who is feeling happy, frustrated, or bored. A great dive in to the subtle jungle of body language!
A great place to start..........2007-08-21
First off, I wish to preface this review by stating that I typically don't read these types of books. I spend my days absorbed in the 'financial world' as V.P. of Marketing for my company. Ergo, when I come home at night from the daily grind, or on weekends, I try my very best to forget about all of the craziness that I am immersed in during the work week. I typically enjoy reading classical literature or a handful of great, modern fiction writers of today (i.e. John Irving, Updike, et al...). However, a co-worker of mine highly recommended this one, so I gave it a shot. All in all, it exceeded my expectations, and I was for the most part pleasantly surprised.
If you are an experienced sales person (and no, that doesn't mean you have the films "Glengarry Glen Ross", "Boiler Room" and "Wall Street" memorized word for word) than odds are this book won't prove to be all that enlightening. You've already, like myself, pretty much mastered the art of understanding and using to your advantage the art of non-verbal communication. However, if you are just venturing into the business world or wish to become a super-star salesperson (God help you!), then by all means make this purchase. There is no doubt about it, more times than not it's not what you say, it's how you say it that really matters. For example, your posture, eye contact, facial expressions, common body gestures, handshakes, etc... all matter more than you will ever know. This book will assist you tremendously in understanding the great art of reading people and at the same time it teaches you to carry yourself in the best, most positive way possible. Like the old cliche ad goes - 'Image is everything'.
Allan & Barbara Pease need to be commended on their excellent, well thought-out, helpful and very easy to read little book. I wish this instructive manual would have been around when I graduated from college and began my career search. Oh how it would have helped me back then! I had to learn the hard way, through the school of hard knocks. This book can save you a lot of time and energy. You will become a better interviewer and interviewee, a more sophisticated, intuitive salesperson and in many ways a much more respectful and considerate human being. If I was teaching a college course on non-verbal communication, I would definitely recommend this book to my students.
Product Description
This book offers practical suggestions and advice for how to teach and learn those subtle messages that most people seem to pick up almost automatically but that have to be directly taught to individuals with social-cognitive challenges. Given the serious consequences that can befall a person who violates a social rule, the strategies and detailed lists of curriculum items make The Hidden Curriculum a much-needed resource.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference but scant on practical strategies.......2007-07-25
I purchased this book a year ago and it sat on my shelf until today. I dusted it off because I am developing a community-based social skills coaching program for an adolescent with high-functioning Autism. I recalled that the book had a nice list of the hidden curriculum for a variety of social situations (e.g. eating at a restauant, telephone skills, rules for dating, reading body language). There were a few in there that I never would have thought of. This was helpful as a jumping off point for making goals and developing a concise script for the sessions.
There is a section in the book on the strategies to teach the hidden curriculum, but it is limited in content. There is a brief description of a technique, examples of worksheets one could use, but there are no blank reproducible materials of the worksheets they used as examples.
I would recommend this book for those just starting out in the field and teachers or parents who want to know what words to use to explain to their child the "unwritten social rules."
By the way, I would also recommend that you "do not talk about how mucus looks or feels in the throat or looks in your tissue." :)
Totally Unhelpful!.......2006-04-02
I bought this book because a reviewer said it would teach people with Asperger's syndrome how to make and manintain eye contact. It doesn't. It just says you should make and maintain eye contact, it doesn't teach you how. This book only tells you what society expects of you, so if you already know what society expects of you, but just cannot figure out how to do it smoothly, don't buy this book. If you already know stuff like, "pull up your pants before coming out of the bathroom", don't buy this book.
Great Resource for Social Skills.......2006-02-19
This book is a must have for anyone whose life is touched by someone with autism. Myles teaches her readers that teaching social skills is not an insurmountable task. It just requires a conscious effort by all.
Finally! A simple solution!.......2005-04-24
One of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!
Bridging the Gap & Crossing into Neuro-neutral Grounds.......2004-12-24
This is another book that people on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum have been praying for! This sterling work helps decode and identify tacit Social Codes & Rules. For many people on the a/A spectrum, learning these nonverbal subtleties is a major challenge. a/A related conditions are neurobiological and affect sensory processing and integration as well as communication. People on the a/A spectrum encounter a wide range of social difficulties, many of which are addressed in this book.
This work gives good advice on how to make and maintain eye contact; how to position oneself when talking to and listening to another; how to appear natural in practicing these skills. This book also gives a good explanation of how to "read" people socially and how to learn to anticipate possible seeming changes in the Tacit Social Codes & Rules. People with neurotypical (NT) brains already know these Rules and NT readers also can benefit from this book by seeing what people on the a/A spectrum contend with. Rather, people on the a/A spectrum learn these behaviors cognitively as this is not intuitive knowledge among the a/A population. Once the Rules are learned, the next step is understanding when and how and to apply them.
Make a place for this book. It is every a/A navigator's best friend when it comes to improving social skills and interpreting human behavior. It is a bridge from the a/A population to the NT population and moves all, a/A and NT readers alike onto neuro-neutral ground. The information found in this book makes communicating in the NT world so much easier and so much more logical!

It's true that politicians blink much more frequently when they're lying, but what other behavior clues do people inadvertently give off? If you want to know if you're being boondoggled, how to tell if your date is interested in a serious relationship, or if you should take that new job, Jo-Ellan Demitrius will help you figure it all out. She gives away the tricks of her trade--jury consulting--in this eye-opening handbook for predicting the behavior and revealing the thoughts of others. She's consulted for more than 600 jury trials, including the O.J. Simpson, Rodney King, and John DuPont cases, as well as for Fortune 100 companies. If her name rings a bell, it may be because she's been on Oprah, Larry King Live, and 60 Minutes, among other television shows.
Much more than a collection of tips on reading body language, her book is supremely organized, detailed, and thorough, with lists of physical characteristics, vocal patterns, office props, and conversational behaviors that reveal much more than you'd think. She instructs on how to analyze hundreds of details of everyday living, from the style of the picture frame on your boss's desk to the odd way that an acquaintance swears up a storm, in order to uncover personality traits and predict future behavior.
Demitrius isn't a hocus-pocus intuition hawker; she's more of a scientist. "...over the past fifteen years," she writes, "I have tested this method on more than ten thousand 'research subjects.' After predicting the behavior of thousands of jurors, witnesses, lawyers, and judges, I have been able to see whether my predictions came true....I did not always peg them correctly, especially in the earlier years. But by testing my perceptions over and over, I have verified which clues are generally reliable and which are not." Her advice will prove valuable not just to lawyers but to businesspeople, parents, and anyone curious about their relationships. While the book is mostly aimed at deconstructing the behavior and characteristics of others, it's also useful for job candidates and anyone concerned with projecting the appropriate image. -- Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
America's top jury consultant, Jo-Ellan Dimitrius, can literally read a person like a book. By decoding the hidden messages in appearance, tone of voice, facial expression, and personal habit, she has accurately predicted the behavior of jurors, witnesses, lawyers, and judges in some of the most celebrated trials of the past two decades. Now in this phenomenal new book, she applies the secrets of her extraordinary success to the everyday situations we all face at work, at home, and in relationships.
How can you "hear between the lines" to detect a lie? When is intuition the best guide to making important decisions? What are the tell-tale signs of romantic attraction? How do other people "read" us? The answers lie closer than we might think. Hair style, clothing, grooming, hand gestures, the neatness of office or living room, the steadiness of the gaze, behavior around subordinates: all of these provide critical clues to a person's integrity, work habits, and sexual interests. Through vivid anecdotes and proven techniques, Dimitrius teaches us how to interpret these signs with accuracy and precision.
Whether your focus is friendship or marriage, career or family, romance or professional success, Reading People gives you the skills you need to make sound, swift decisions and reap the benefits from a lifetime of razor-sharp insight.

An interesting read.......2007-02-06
I'm a "human behavior junkie" so I read all of these types of books, This one is not too bad. It for sure has some interesting insights. I much prefer Lieberman's YOU CAN READ ANYONE. That book is very practical, and as is his style, not filled with any fluff or psycho-nonsense.
this is a dog.......2007-01-28
There is no significant insight to this author's offering other than right and wrong means nothing in the legal process-and of course, you can make money from a legal travesty-buyers should'nt waste their money-I did
Every day reading.......2007-01-26
Can someone please offer a little help. Someone very close to me has a difficult time communicating. I believe it's because she misreads or ignores social cues and is in denial about her feelings. She exibits passive aggressive behavior when she's angry and denies being angry, but I can see the hostility in her actions, even though they appear okay on the surface. It has been frustrating trying to point out specific actions because she doesn't see them as angry actions. I ordered a body language book, but I need a book on the psychology of intention, at least I guess that's what I need. Is anyone aware of such a book?
GOOD BOOK.......2007-01-13
the core message which was reinforced here is to go with your instincts about people.
BUT REMEMBER; there will always be that one who defies all prediction; that Joker in the pack!

Customer Reviews:
If you're going to buy one book on Non-Verbal Communication..........2007-01-09
I've recently become fascinated with the subject of non-verbal communication -- both as a scientific/psychological/anthropological discipline, and as a way to improve real life communication skills -- and I can honestly say whether your interest in 'body language' is scientific or practical, buy this book. I've bought many, many books on the subject and even purchased a home-study course on body language, and in my opinion this is the most comprehensive single volume on non-verbal communication available. The knowledge within this book is easy to practically apply and scientifically sound.
Other great books on the subject include:
Fundamentals of Non-Verbal Behavior (Ed. Feldman and Rime)
Unmasking the Face (Paul Ekman -- featured in 'Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction)
The Hidden Dimension (Hall)
The Silent Language (Hall)
The application of reading body language in photographs found in Kevin Hogan's Body Language course ([...]) is really valuable as well, and his practical suggestions for improving one's own communication are a smart distillation of what could easily have become a cumbersome amount of information in this area, but for detailed and thorough scientific work in the study and application of Body Language, start with Mark Knapp! Highly Recommended!!!
Great Resource for Researchers.......2005-08-19
This is a terrific compilation of research into nonverbal communication. It is a thoroughly sourced review of writings on nonverbal topics, tending toward a psychological, academic tone.
Note: If you are seeking original research, Knapp's and Hall's book would be a good reference aid. However, in this work they are content to primarily synthesize the work of others. That said, they do a marvelous job of collecting and reporting on a wealth of valuable insights.
Classic work in the field of nonverbal communication.......2001-07-24
Dr. Knapp has been a distinguished scholar in the field of communication for the past 35 years. This is a very small sampling of his honors: He is a Fellow of the International Communication Association and has served as its President. He received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Speech Communication Association in l993 and served as President of that association in l989-90. Dr. Knapp is the author of many articles and several books besides this one, including: Interpersonal Communication and Human Relationships (with A. Vangelisti) and Handbook of Interpersonal Communication (with G. Miller). Dr. Knapp has acted as consultant, lecturer, and trainer for over fifty different business organizations, voluntary groups, and government agencies. He is currently a Professor in the Communication Department at the University of Texas at Austin. ...
Dr. Hall has also been a well-respected scholar for over 20 years. She obtained her Ph.D. at Harvard and is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where she teaches social-personality psychology, interpersonal and nonverbal communication, gender differences and health psychology. She has published many scholarly articles and books on the subject of nonverbal communication...
Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction is a textbook used in communication and psychology departments at universities all over the country. It is considered a classic work in the field of nonverbal communication. Whether you are just beginning to read about this topic or you have studied it extensively, this book will be useful to you. There is an index, a comprehensive table of contents, extensive footnotes and lists of further readings on this subject at the end of every chapter.
In short, if you read this book, you can be sure that you have gained thoroughly accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive information on the subject of nonverbal communication. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Let's "talk" nonverbally!.......2000-03-26
It's enough to read the table of contents - and you're amazed, astonished of possibilities to communicate without the words! I just can't imagine how it would be to read the whole book... Super, turbo, extra, lux!

Customer Reviews:
Not bad.......2007-08-23
Its a pretty old book, published in 1980, but its contents are still relevant in today's context. I also purchased Michelle Dresbold's "Sex, Lies & Handwriting" and borrowed from my local library "Handwriting Analysis: How to make it work for you" by Andrea McNichol.
On comparison of the three, Miss Dresbold's book is more like an introduction that really gets your interest in the subject, but her outstanding analysis of Jack the Ripper really got me interested in the subject (one that the other 2 books do not provide)! Miss Dresbold also highlights more lucidly the characteristics of certain dangerous traits that exists in the handwriting of people, which might provide clues to a dangerous person.
Miss McNichol's book is more like a step by step process of guiding the reader into handwriting analysis; like a school syllabus, which makes for great reading for a first timer, and in fact one would be quite adept at Handwriting Analysis once finished.
This book, by Miss Amend and Miss Ruiz... I would describe it as similar to a manual, with the greatest detail and least "introduction paragraphs" and contains the most amount of sample signatures by famous people. However, it does not highlight to the reader what stuff to look out for in people; the book draws equality to all handwriting characteristics with little embellishments.
On a personal note, with so much SMS and email going on today, handwriting is probably quite underestimated and overlooked as a tool. Also, I'm not sure if handwriting analysis can apply to cultures that also has other written forms of language, which might 'interrupt' any rules of handwriting analysis as depicted in all three books. These cultures include the Chinese (Chinese Characters focuses on strokes), Indian (particularly rounded handwriting), Thai... etc.
Still, all three books are definitely one to keep!
ADD TO YOUR SKILLS.......2007-02-02
Add one more skill to your life skills inventory to be more successful in your journey.
No body can hide his/her real emotion since now, if he/she write you something !!
Invest in this book is my opinion. the rest is up to you.
"Basic" Book that will teach you more than the basics of handwriting analysis .......2007-01-28
I have read several books on this topic. This is probably one of the most complete on this topic and certainly the best when it comes to analyzing and interpreting the handwriting of the people you deal with everyday, from bosses to children, employees, spouses, parents, lovers and friends.
Some of the other books that I read on this topic covered a lot of theory.
But this one actually shows how to analyze handwriting in clear precise terms.
I really enjoyed the handwriting analysis covering famouns people. The material on determining whether someone was emotionally disturbed or suffering from other emotional issues was also very interesting. This is also one of the only books that I have read that did a thorough job explaining the meaning of writing rhytm. If you are as interested in this topic as I am, then you may also enjoy Palm Reading: A Little Guide to Life's Secrets.
An excellent book.......2006-12-30
This is the best book that I have seen about this subject. I have inherited about 500 old family letters and I thought I might get some more insight into the writer's personalities if I studied their handwriting. This book was a big help. The author explained how the handwriting was influenced by the character of the person and the results I got was generally consistent with the information I had gleaned from the content of the letters and family history. There were a few surprises though and I gained some important insight into a couple of the family members that I wouldn't have otherwise. I highly recommend this book as it was better than the other books I consulted.
The original.......2006-12-25
The original work on the topic of graphoanalysis. A classic study with many example illustrations and great explanatory text. A must have for an interest in handwriting analysis.

It's like they knew everything about me...had seen every interaction with anyone i knew, just knew my thoughts and the way i was inside and out...it's strong traits and weak traits were dead on...it described me as :over-confident, exhibitionist, and unbalanced, for weaknesses and magnetic, provocative and determined for strong...and as i read more and more into the profile of my birthdate, i realized it all related to me in some small or significant way through out my life...very interesting book...very curious indeed...pick it up and have a look...or you can check it out at the nearest book store if you wanted to...my friends and anyone else i come in contact with...love this book...glad to own one...
Writing on a razor's edge .......2007-09-28
Astrology is a really controversial issue, and I did not believe in anything related with this before read this book in an airport bookstore. Everywhere I read about my sign they tell me wrong stuff and general things. After read Goldschneider book, however, I begin to believe that there is some sense at all in this matter. He made no mistakes about me, and was absolutely precise about my way of thinking. I read friends, parents and relatives descriptions too, and the level of precision was also incredable, without deep errors or misconceptions.
The research he said he made can explain much of what is said. Even if the complete meaning of what can explain astrology is obscure yet, this book has a very accurate text.
I love this Book.......2007-09-28
This book is amazing! it really does seem to capture the essential nature and habits of individuals born on a specific day. Every one who has looked themselves up has been impressed with the accuracy. we use it as a kind of icebreaker or party game. we also find that it is helpful for gaining insight if you are going to introduce someone or speak at a memorial service etc. I plan on buying copies for my children and maybe a new one for myself because we use this one so much it is getting worn out.
Great book.......2007-04-09
I had seen this book in the lobby of a hotel in SF and enjoyed it very much. I was very pleased to be able to find it on Amazaon and even happier to be able to find it in new condition. It is now a conversation piece on our coffee table.
Undescribable!.......2007-03-10
My friend Marie had this book, and let's just say it lead me to my fiancee. I decided to read the descriptions of the relationships, between my mom and I, my brothers, dad, friends, coworkers... and of a new acquaintance. In the bottom of each description it mentions what type of relationship would work best with those signs, either "Coworkers", "Siblings", "Parent/Child", etc. It turns out, that mine and my then new buddy was "Love and Marriage". I freaked out and started mentioning all the things I hated about him and how I could never deal with any of those things. It could never be! He and I were so different. Well, needless to say, a year and a half later, we're engaged and own a home. November of 2008 we will be married.
I can't wait to see what it'll say about our kids!!

Book Description
In this Spanish version of The Mastery of Love, don Miguel Ruiz illuminates the fear-based beliefs and assumptions that undermine love and lead to suffering and drama in relationships. Using insightful stories to bring his message to life, Ruiz shows how to heal emotional wounds, recover the freedom and joy that are one's birthright, and restore the playfulness that is vital to loving relationships. Among the themes explored are the Toltec wisdom of the heart and the war of control.

Inspired to be authentic.......2007-08-31
I enjoyed all the books put out by Don Miguel Ruiz, but this one was truly awesome. I've learned a lot about myself and the love God has for each and everyone of us. I've read this book three times and probably will read it again and again. I enjoyed his wisdom and insight.
Love thyself unconditionally!.......2007-06-08
Wish I had read this book when I was 15 years old. Even now it has been a blessing in my life! It is never too late to realize how special you are and to value the differences in each one of us. This book taught me so much about self value, self love, self esteem and consequently empowered me to create my own happiness and enjoy "la pura vida". I shared this blessing with my whole family by giving them a copy of this enlightening book.

Book Description
Should you sweat the small stuff?
Absolutely, says Stephen Young-especially when it comes to those critical behaviors that can make or break performance. The reason is simple: no matter what you think you're saying, your words, gestures, and tone of voice can actually communicate something entirely different.
Too often, negative micromessages undermine morale, business opportunities, and ultimately your organization. Micromessaging examines the nuanced behaviors that we all blindly use and react to in our dealings with others. Yet as Young points out, these micromessages can reveal a lot about our own-and our superiors'-biases and preconceived notions. Learning how to constructively address these behaviors can bring about positive change.
Young offers a common language for encouraging open discussion in the workplace, along with skills to identify and address familiar micromessages; tools for deploying microadvantages; and real-life workplace scenarios, self-assessments, and solutions that help readers interpret and alter ingrained behaviors and their effects. He delivers valuable information on
- Cruicial leadership skills and how to acquire them
- Universal workplace cultural issues
- How expectations affect the performance of others
- Ways to speak fairly, not falsely
- Techniques that eliminate group think
- How to reset the "filters" you use to "screen" others
Based on research from MIT, Young's approach has already helped numerous Fortune 500 clients, including Merck, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Starbucks, IBM, Boeing, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Cisco, and Raytheon to increase leadership effectiveness. With its proven wisdom, you can experience what so many business executives worldwide have discovered and make it a powerful part of your leadership skill set.

Micromessaging: Why Great leadership is beyond words.......2007-05-30
Great book. Common sense put into action!! I read it aloud to my wife while driving on vacation. She loved it also.
Insightful advice.......2007-04-20
Micromessages are those subtle - and sometimes not-so-subtle - nonverbal messages that people send through body language, tone of voice and the way they inflect words. Micromessages signal at an immediate gut level how people feel about each other. You can use nice words when speaking to other people, but if at the same time you inadvertently send out negative micromessages, those nonverbal signals will have a more enduring impact than anything you say. Managers, supervisors and other leaders should become avid students of their own facial expressions, styles of personal engagement, body language and other nonverbal communicative attributes. Then they should try to send positive micromessages, not harmful ones that breed resentment and undermine performance. This book is easy to read and understand, but we believe that it delivers an important lesson: Micromessages matter, so mind your unspoken communications. Those small signals have a large reverberation.
Great book on understanding business relationships.......2007-03-24
I bought this book to help me understand business or the way people interact in a business setting. As a middle manager of a small business that is now part of a big business (aka recently acquired), I have been struggling with change in management, management style and culture. What this book is helping me understand is the messages that come from people in authority and how it impacts the rank and file; and likewise how my own emotions, thoughts and feelings impact the people who report too me.
While I have not yet finished the book, it does have me hooked and thirsting for more. As a technologist it also helps bridge the communication gap between technology and business. Being exposed to this subject matter has already opened my eyes to the fact that management and leadership are two very seperate skills. I now understand the power of effective leadership and has given me new thought in developing my career.

Great reference!.......2007-09-04
I love learning new things about my dogs, and this book taught me a lot!
Superlative study of canine body language!.......2007-07-28
We rescued an abused Great Dane puppy 3-4 months ago. She had been mistreated by 2 females in her short 6 month life, so she hated women. Within a month, I had been to the local ER twice with dog bites(not puppy mouthing, but snarl/lunge/attack bites). A behaviorist recommended this book as a way to identify the triggers and expressions that would tell me that the pup's very low fear aggression threshold was about to be crossed. With knowledge from this book along with many exercises and activities, the pup, now 85 lbs. is starting to calm down. This book has probably saved her life as we had to get her volatile and frenzied behaviors under control before she gained another 50 lbs.
A must read for all dog owners. Now we feel sad about how previous pups had communicated with us, and we were too dumb to catch the messages they were sending!
This book is very helpful!.......2007-05-28
I've had dogs all my life, but haven't actually studied them until recently. I find my old interpretations of dog communication were very human-biased. This book is very illuminating on how dogs really communicate. The author communicates the subject using excellent photos and photo sequences, which is such a help! I generally find text descriptions inadequate and even videos are difficult, because the sequences go by so fast. I think sometimes the author overdoes the interpretation, but as I gain expertise I may revise that comment. This is a great book and is one of my primary references.
Very useful book.......2007-05-28
I, and everyone I've shown it to, have found this book very educational. I thought I'd just use it as a reference, looking up specific body language as needed (which is a very good use for it), but I find myself reading it cover to cover because it's so fascinating. I've had dogs all my life, and trained them and loved them, but I can't believe how ignorant I was about their body language. As I read the book I see these behaviors in my dog and wonder how I could have been so unobservant. I think even folks who know a lot about dogs and training can learn some things from this. I plan to buy more to use as gifts.
Best Book For Understanding Dog Body Language.......2007-05-28
I volunteer at a shelter and am fascinated by temperment testing. While I have the benefit of watching a wonderful temperment tester each week, reading this book has been an incredible education. Now when I watch dogs tested, I can see what our tester is seeing... the freezing, the whale eye, the stress behaviors, and so on. I'm learning to better judge how a given dog reacts to other dogs or to cats.
For me, the benefits include being better able to know how to handle the dogs because I can better judge their personalities and shape my behavior to them, know how the dogs I handle are reacting to various stimuli, and be able to tell perspective adopters more about the dogs than I previously could.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who either works with dogs or owns a dog. You can't go wrong. The photos are so clear and the writing so easily understandable, that everyone can absorb the information. Be warned though... you'll want to read this book over and over and over again until the pages are well worn. It's just THAT good!
