2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2004-03-31

Evans' book is retread of an early 1980's volume, and most of the book seems to be picked up from the earlier version. There is a lot of clip art, which is now hopelessly outdated (guys in suits, women in dresses, etc.) and should have been deleted. Evans actually had to the gall to title this book "THE NEW" when it is basically a reprint of a hopelessly out-of-date volume. Architectural illustration in this day of advance computer graphics relies heavily on the latest styles of drawing, illustration, fashion, cars etc. and the ancient art techniques and drawings offered here would earmark any illustration as hopelessly dated. Nothing like an illustration of a 15 year-old-car parked in from of a million dollar home to mark you as a hopelessly out-of-touch illustrator. There is a small section of more recent full color illustrations inserted into the black and white remainder, but again, the illustration style, done in early computer graphics, is muddy, dated and not very well done. Any volume claiming to be the "ULTIMATE" should include a CD with vector files of the art for use by the reader/illustrator. Evans must think that there is a large pool of architects out there who are going to forego their slick and beautiful clipart 3-D disks in favor of scanning in Evans' dated art as a bitmap and trying to work them into their renderings. Most of the text seems to have been picked up verbatim from the 1980's edition, and describes illustration techniques in terms of t-squares, triangles, pencil lines and ink! Computer graphics doesn't seem to even exist in this edition! Despite, the gee-whiz cover color illustration, this edition is a tired, out-of-date reprint turkey that should never have seen daylight -- the publisher and Evans should both be ashamed to have put out this edition. The hype on the cover is totally inacurate and borders on false advertising. Stay clear of this one.

4 out of 5 stars The New Complete Illustration Guide (2nd Edition).......2001-05-30

The book's contents are very useful & helpful to me. I like the drawings of people presented in different scales & sizes. Colored figures are also helpful because it saves me time to think of what color to put on clothings & cars for my drawings. There are various vehicles in different angles/ views that I found very useful for most of my illustration. I strongly recommend this book to all illustrators whether they're beginners or professionals because it's the best book that I've ever used.

Dear mr. Grice:

I loved your book so much, that I have decided that this is what
I would like to do. I am unable to go to college, but I have completed architectural drafting at a local art school. What do I have to study to do renderings such as the type you have in the book? (10 stars!)

If you do get to read this, please contact amazon so that you
can answer my letter.
I tried to find a site where I could send you an e-mail, but
was not succesful.

Thank you so kindly.

This book is absolutely fabulous! It does not give instructions
on how to do this type of work. It is only to inspire. If
you have a passion for learning architectural illustration, as
I do, you will reach the heavens after looking at some of these gorgeous drawings. There are illustrations in airbrush, pencil, watercolor, tempra, and by computer. If that's what you are
looking for, it's worth every penny!

4 out of 5 stars Ocean Liner Postcards in Marine Art........2002-08-18

I echo the opinions of the first reviewer`s comments if not his star rating. As a British collector of Liner postcards I probably am biased towards it`s "Britishness" but it is unquestionably the best [and admittedly the only]book on this subject available.Look, love Liners- like lots!

3 out of 5 stars A Very British Book.......2001-05-03

This book could have been written in 1925. It is a model of its kind: well-organized, quite literate, and with very valuable details, appendices, and a good index. There are lists of publishers, timelines, and most important, Artists -- and that list indexes the particular card(s) in the text. Further, in this little book there is a capsule history of passenger shipping from 1837 to 1950 --and it is a far better-written, more lucid and more informative narrative than most of what passes for history these days in larger size picture-books. If you read this book you will have taken a giant step toward being a serious collector.

That said, there are drawbacks as well as virtues in this little book's Britishness. Most of all, it concentrates almost entirely on British shipping, with perfunctory nods to the Germans (lightly represented), the French (hardly represented at all), or the (completely ignored) Dutch, Swedish, Italians, and Americans. And despite the virtuosity of the artists represented there is a certain sameness about the examples.

That really didn't bother me. This is a beautiful little book about a wonderful little subject. If it takes no note of the sleeker, more stylized Art Nouveau or Deco styles popular on "the Continent," it does give a very good exposition of the realistic yet painterly artists, many of whom (Wyllie, Dixon and Shoesmith for example) were superb draftsmen as well as painters --talents sorely needed, then and now.

I only hope Mr. Wall will tackle the other countries in another volume -- and I will rush to buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Woefully inadequate.......2001-02-14

The world of ocean liner postcards is a fascinating one, filled with exquisite exterior and interior views of long-gone ships. But this volume misses most of the best. Where are the gorgeous chromolithographed Hamburg-America cards, whose detail is astonishing and artistry is breathtaking. Has Wall never seen one? Wall has a single North German Lloyd card, out of hundreds of beautiful examples I've seen. Why? Where are the lovely Red Star cards, some so beautiful they've been turned into posters and reproduced and are for sale even now. Where are the delicate Japanese cards, so different from their European counterparts? Has Wall never seen them? Apparently not. The cards reproduced here are almost entirely British, as if only British steam ships mattered--and yet these are the most common cards available today and among the least distinguished. Furthermore, a fair number of Wall's examples are in such poor condition that no collector would have them in his or her collection. Worse yet, Wall's book is filled with small inaccuracies. Normandie cards, he says, are rare--and yet I have seen at least 200. For the person interested in ocean liner postcards--and there is good reason to be interested, both for artistic and historical reasons--this book is a shame. It could have been remarkable, but it was evidently put together by someone who has very little knowledge or experience of these miniature artworks. By the way, at one time I had 7500 different ocean liner postcards in my collection, so I think my opinion has considerable validity. I bought this book hoping to show my wife what the best ocean liner postcards were like, what my collection was like when I owned it. I wasted my money. Instead of buying this book, spend you money at a postcard show. If it's a good one, you'll find a number of cards better than any in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A unique must for ocean liner buffs.......1999-08-22

August `99 OCEAN LINER POSTCARDS IN MARINE ART 1900-1945 is a very attractive, nicely produced little handbook (the first of its kind) aimed chiefly at ocean-liner buffs, for whom it will surely be a must-buy. The book may also be of interest to those who recall the age of ocean liners and perhaps even sailed on them. The reproductions of more than 200 color post cards of passenger ships are surprisingly good, as are many of the paintings themselves. For some reason, artists - even marine artists - often have difficulty in representing ships in a way that is anatomically accurate, as it were: the perspective may be off, the stacks too high, the hulls to large and looming. Not to worry: most of the paintings commissioned for post cards - which after all were marketing vehicles - are imbued with an irresistible romantic aura that overcomes all defects. Regrettably, the information about the ships depicted in this nifty book is quite sketchy and the text, which presents short histories of the lines involved, is rather dry.

    Book Description

NYSR produces the Portfolio every few years, both as a showcase of the very best in contemporary architectural illustration, and as a resource for architects, developers, and designers who wish to commission renderings of their own. This edition is by far the largest we have produced to date, and features over 360 color renderings by 46 top illustrators, a foreword by Alan Ritchie of Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects, and contact information for each artist.

The illustrators featured in the NYSR Portfolio represent a broad array of styles and techniques; from traditional media such as watercolor and gouache, to digital renderings, to hybrid renderings that combine computer and hand work. As a design professional, you know that renderings are often the most public face of your project prior to construction. The right rendering can help sell your ideas to clients, prospective tenants, regulatory bodies, and communities. Within the Portfolio, it is our hope that you will find the right illustrator for your project.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource.......2007-08-02

Though most of the artists in this New York professional group have websites of their own, as well as their Society site, to see samples of their work, the book is well-printed in excellent color and easy to take to meetings, stick in a briefcase and discuss with clients, or simply review when you're tired of peering into the monitor. The book itself offers a broad survey of illustration styles, useful to others in graphic arts. Also, the rendering services that are promoted here are of interest beyond the New York region, just as New York architects do work all over the world. It's a semi-annual publication that I've followed and used since it began a dozen or more years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with useful drawings of every type!.......1998-10-03

I rate this book 5 Stars because it is so comprehensive in its variety of people and objects. The sheer volume of choices of style, poses, type of items -- this is like an artist's candy store.

I used this book first as a student, and now as an interior designer. It is a helpful tool to be used to augment visual presentations. The addition of these items adds "life" to otherwise static room renderings.

While it is true that a VERY FEW drawings are not actually to scale, the vast majority of this book is extremely accurate. Some sections state scale specifically, others indicate "random scale." It's up to designers to have the ability to tell whether something fits the scale of the drawing they are working on.

I don't hesitate to recommend this book for anyone who wishes to add a little life to their drawings.

3 out of 5 stars errors in trace!.......1997-10-12

Althought the drawings are very good in TRACE, they are NOT to scale! Look closely at the 1/2 inch scale, and you will see that the reclining woman is 8 feet tall! The page header indicates that the drawings are to scale, and as designers, we need them to scale, the fact is this is a misrepresentation. I am surprised that this error, which occurs frequently in this book, escaped the editing process!
