Book Description
Paris, the City of Light-its beauty and romance are matched only by its cultural riches. This stunningly illustrated book offers, in one definitive volume, the entire history of Paris's art and architecture, from the Gothic magnificence of Notre Dame with its renowned stained glass, to the engineering marvel of the Eiffel Tower, to the endlessly popular paintings of the French Impressionists, housed in the former train station now known as the Musée d'Orsay. In more than 800 color photographs and 720 pages, this book leaves no doubt as to why Paris is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world.
Paris, City of Art reveals the myriad treasures its artists and architects have created during the city's long and illustrious history, from the soaring cathedrals and the extravagant royal residences of Versailles and the Louvre (today one of the most important museums in the world) to the paintings of such neoclassical masters as Jacques Louis-David and such modern revolutionaries as Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. This deluxe, oversize volume is sure to appeal to every art lover, every Francophile, and every Parisian at heart.

THE FLAGSHIP BOOK OF PARIS.......2007-03-15
BY FAR THE BEST BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF ART OF ONE OF THE GREATEST CITIES IN THE WORD, WHEN IT COMES TO ART. THE HIGHEST QUALITY OF PAPER AND VIBRANT CRISP ILLUSTRATIONS.IF SELECT IT , IS REALLY AN INVESTMENT.
Parisian Perfection.......2005-04-05
This is an amazing book, it is HUGE. The photographs are of the first quality and are crisp. This book is 700 pages so you can imagine how thorough it is, it just goes on and on, page after page, one building more amazing than than the other. I have always loved Paris and the city photographs so well, much like Rome. This book is a steal at this price and that is saying something, I am surprised they can print it at this price and make money, the paper used is of the highest quality and that's what makes the pictures pop. The book goes inside buildings that are rarely photographed, that's why it is such a joy to find that the photographer is excellent and that the quality of the book is fantastic. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Paris and appreciates books of this quality.

Great overview to plan your trip.......2007-06-04
Context: I'm not an academic or a scholar; I'm a regular guy who likes visiting museums when I travel and I wanted to do a little researach before I left. This book worked well for my daughter and I to determine which parts of the museum deserved the most time (on a short trip) and to get a better understanding of the works. I'm not qualified to evaluate it from an academic perspective, but as a layman it was exactly what we needed.
"Beautiful book".......2005-10-04
I sent this book to my mother after we toured the Hermitage this summer. She loved it. Lots of narrative, which she may not take time to read, but the pictures are great.
Fine photography.......2002-09-06
Outstanding photography
I sent this book as a gift to my brother, who is a printer. He thought that pains had been taken with the photography to produce such fine prints. He compared it to another book of Restoration painters that he had once bought at the Guggenheim, having been thrilled with the original exhibition, but said that the Restoration photography had been careless and therefore did not print well, whereas the Hermitage collection exhibited outstanding photography. I didn't buy books that were available in St. Petersburg at the Hermitage because they didn't look good, but these were both beautiful and plentiful. I can't comment on the accompanying text, as I didn't read it.
A BEAUTIFUL TOUR OF THE HERMITAGE GALLERY!.......2000-08-31
I had very high expectations from "Paintings" when I ordered it, and they were all met! The volume contains beautiful fine quality, mainly full-page reproductions from the famous collection. "Paintings" is a beautifully designed, very substantial size volume which also offers Colin Eisler's very informative yet not imposing style of writing with which she guides us through the many periods of western art and the history behind Catherine the Great's collection. I, a Russian, can only appreciate the thoroughness with which the Hermitage collection is compiled in the "Paintings." I bought it along with "Paintings in the Louvre," both volumes are of the same format as if in the same series and will always be our priceless source for admiring some of the world's most treasured canvases.

The Next Best Thing to Being There .......2007-02-13
Beautifully illustrated, this book takes you on a well organised journey through the main districts of Paris but also informs on a differnent asthetic level such as the essential spirit of this city as seen through its architecture and its culture. The grande old history from the baroque and ancient regieme onwards is elegantly sought out with a particularly interesting chapter containing old master craftsmen at their trades and where you might find them. This is a book that you can simiply sit down with and devour in a glutonous way. I found this book, when sitting in one of those well heeled, and gracious bookshops, that sell good coffee and deadly cakes! Long story short - Amazon to the rescue and I am now enjoying the glories of it's pages right from my armchair. For anyone who plans to visit Paris (like myself)and/or anyone who loves things of days gone by, and wants to do so in thier mind.... give this a look. It's cheaper than an airfare and nearly as good.
Armchair and Reality Paris.......2006-06-07
I bought this book when it first came out, as a friend was leaving that very day to go to Paris. It kept me going until I was able to make my first visit in 2003. I have made two more visits since then.
I still go back to it and tell friends about it. It is one of the best photographed Paris books that I own. It brings you and your armchair right into the best of it...and allows you to savor the beauty. Voila!!!
Ah Paris.......2001-04-25
I'm surprised the other reviewer only gave this 3 stars. I think the photograghy is sumptuous and the text is quite lovely. These are the spots I remember and go back to in my imagination.
It's The Pictures, After All.......1999-12-16
The photographs within these covers are gorgeous - it's a perfect souvenir of Paris. In fact, if you buy this, you can think about leaving your camera at home. The text, translated from the French (original title 'Art de Vivre a Paris') is a bit gushy, and you might wonder, as I did, how much has indeed been lost in the reinterpretation. Never mind. Living In Paris has been in and out of print, so when it's available, get it! It's still cheaper than taking 5 rolls of your own shots to the Fotomat. And these are the pictures you'll wish you had taken.

Excellent resource.......2007-09-12
If you plan to travel Europe this book is a must have, especially if you are interested in history and the museums. It gives tips on how to get tickets without standing in long lines and other tidbits a tourist would not know. I found it to be very time saving and helpful. It definitely will increase my enjoyment while I'm on vacation.
Rick Steves' Europe 101: History and Art for the Traveler.......2007-07-30
I love reading the Rick Steves' travel books and was very pleasantly surprised by my new understanding of European History and how it relates to art after reading this book. Rick Steves puts everything into perspective and connects art and history in a clear and concise manner. As someone who didn't appreciate European History as a student, I have found this book to be a great tool to re-educate myself and feel I now have a better understanding of the art I will see while traveling in Europe!
You should Buy it!!.......2007-06-09
I was searching for a book like this for months. Already a fan of Rick Steves, I picked this book up and was more than happy with my purchase. This is a fantastic book to learn history or to learn about art. I used it to read while traveling Europe, but would read it as a leisure read as well. The photos are impressive, but more impressive are the diagrams and timelines to help meld it all together.
A touch of culture and history.......2007-05-18
Yes...if you want to travel to Europe, you should know what is written in this guide.
I found it very usefull and interesting, I am not a guy that are used to read about history and art.
Could Have Gotten 5 Stars, Except..........2005-10-04
If the entire book had been written like the first half I'd have given this book 5 stars without hesitation. Unfortunately, as others have observed, when he got to the Modern World Rick blew it.
The book is subtitled "History and Art for the Traveler." For the first 2/3rds or so of the book Rick stuck to the subject and the information was great. A wonderful overview of the early history of Europe and the evolution of art and architecture from ancient Egypt up until WWI. You don't get a lot of details, but as an overview it is well-written and fascinating. Just the sort of background that a traveller needs to really appreciate what he is seeing.
Once he got past WWI, though, it seems that Rick just couldn't stop himself from tossing in his personal political observations. Of course, politics and history are closely tied, so some political information is useful and necessary to understanding history. Good historians always include some political information. Sadly, Rick does not provide us with some political information. What he does is infuse all too many passages with his personal politics. At one point he includes a several-pages long dissertation that is nothing but a political rant--completely out of place in a book that is SUPPOSED to be about history and art for the traveller!
My other complaint about the book is that in some ways he is a bit of an art snob. He basically says that you don't have a right to criticize art if you don't understand it. He offers an analogy, saying that you can't appreciate the beauty of a '56 Chevy if you don't know a Volvo from an Edsel. I'm sorry, but that is simply not true. It is quite easy to have a deep appreciation for a '56 Chevy without know anything about Volvos or Edsels, or any other cars for that matter!
If no other car had ever existed, the '56 Chevy Belair would still be a thing of beauty. And you most certainly don't need to know anything about engines or transmissions to see that.
Having offered my complaints, I still give it three stars, because there is still a lot of useful information here. I would read up until the section on the Modern World. From there, skip to the description of Britain. Then read the section on art appreciation.
Even with its short-comings I think this book is worth the cover price. It's a good book. If Rick had stuck to the subject it would have been a great book.

Book Description
Roman in origin, the villa evolved from serving as a rural and farming center to a stately country residence. Over time the villa's agricultural function became secondary to a new ideal-a place for intellectual leisure and healthy country living. As a result, the new dwelling had to reflect a cultivated design as did its landscaping. Villas were no longer the work of unskilled laborers but of gifted architects, the best known of which is Andrea Palladio, whose style remains influential today.
In this fascinating volume, the author describes and illustrates 250 of the most remarkable villas from the 600-year-old tradition, some well-known houses, others generally overlooked. Presented here are panoramas and details of grand country villas and magnificent suburban estates, each with its own charm and history, and each of which contributes to a style that is still imitated in our century. The illustrations and text by Ovidio Guaita, representing decades of work, are grouped by region, north to south. Enriching the coverage, each chapter includes a profile of a personality-architect, builder, artist, or patron-whose work had a lasting influence on the culture of the villa.
Supplementing the color photographs of exteriors and interiors are architectural drawings of houses and maps. The appendices offer a glossary, a bibliography, and a listing of villas that may be visited
This splendid book should be of great appeal to those interested in architecture, art history, and travel.
Other Details: 400 illustrations, 300 in full color.

Vibrant Villas.......2005-04-23
This is a very informative and interesting book. The pictures though well executed are not as vivid as I expected, I don't know if it's because of the paper used or the exposer, they just don't pop vividly off the page like you often see in books of this price but they are well done and are clear. Having said that the villas covered are great and the picture ARE well executed, all the major areas of Italy are covered and the villas chosen are the best. I really did like this book, it's just that I have owned such fine books, I expect alot, but I do highly recomment the book to anyone interested the subject, it is a fine book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A must-have for "church-hopping" in Rome!.......2004-02-09
I have been to Rome 8 times, and this book comes with me every time! The floor plans for 50 of the most popular churches in the city of Rome are laid out for you, as well as what to see while you're in there. The author even thought to make the highlights of each church into a 'walking tour', so you're seeing the items in the order you'd be walking it, rather than criss-crossing inside every church. It give the history of the building as well as the names and dates of great artwork to be found. I'm sorry to find out it's out of print -- but it's definitely worth looking for used!

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Cover.......2007-07-23
This book could make you give up shopping. Pottery, cheese, glass...not one good tip on the outlets. The cover is beautiful.
Well Made.......2007-06-11
At last a different slant for the lover of all things Italian in Italy. Well researched and very readable. A great "homework" book for anyone wishing to bring home a little of authentic Italy on their next trip.
let out leather.......2006-08-31
I was dissapointed that leather shopping is not covered. That is one item I really associate with Italy and the author simply states that there are many nice shop. I rarely buy items such as pottery or glasss as shipping or carring it home is costly. This book would be great if these are your favorites.(pottery and glass) I did E-mail the author about leather shopping in Florence but no reply .
A Great Resource.......2006-03-07
If you are going to Italy and are interested in things specific to the region and made there, this book is a great resource for planning your trip and also a great companion through the actual adventure.
The photos are great. The text is informative. Plus, some things you may not have thought of on your own are covered and suggested.
Having just returned from a driving trip through Italy, I can say the book was definitely valuable although you need to supplement with your own research as to practicalities (such as how to get to places and actually find the shops within the cities).
Also, some of the cities actually publish listings/maps of the shops. So, for example, it is possible to obtain a map of the ceramics shops of Faenza from the city's tourist office.
We had some difficulties in trying to find some of the addresses, and some of the recommendations are a matter of taste, but these are details. I wish there were more books of this sort. A great resource!
simply the best.......2004-06-11
Being the owner of a furniture store, my last visit to Italy was a ceramics buying trip. The recommendations in this book were right on. The section on Deruta was especially good.
Book Description
The women of Paris have always been recognized as the world leaders of a classic, sophisticated look, that certain je ne sais quoi which has held such mystique for style-conscious women around the world. Here two native Parisians demonstrate what it takes to achieve the look of la petite parisienne, from building a collection of chic, timeless pieces (what the Parisian woman looks for in color, line, etc.) to choosing accessories, jewelry, perfume, and more. In addition, the book provides complete listings of not-to-be-missed Parisian boutiques, plus an indispensable glossary of French fashion terms. At once a practical style guide and a charming homage to one of the most popular destinations in the world, this colorful volume reveals the elusive secrets of Parisian chic.
Customer Reviews:
more entertaining than useful.......2007-05-17
This book was published the same year that I lived in Paris. I like it for sentimental reasons, it gives you a picture of the street fashion that year. One of the outfits in the book is identical to the favorite outfit of one of my french friends at the time. However, this book is now outdated and I agree whith J. Whithford that Elegance by Madame Dariaux is a far better book.
Outdated.......2007-05-12
As someone who has been to Paris many times and has many Parisian friends I find this book to be stuffy and out of date. Yes, true, there are still many women in Paris who dress in the "old school" way but the average woman on the streets in no way represents what these women are trying to sell. However, they do give some interesting advice that is classic and can be used and adapted for wherever you live or travel.
Snobbish shop owners name brands.......2006-11-03
I was very disappointed in this book. Mostly the mother-daughter team, who own a costume jewelry shop, tells you to buy expensive French brands you already knew about. The book is about half photographs of them wearing classic clothes that don't look particularly French---cream, khaki, navy and other neutrals. Very tasteful, and stylish in a quiet way, but nothing specifically French. Maybe that's the point. Entre Nous by Debra Ollivier was vastly more useful in understanding what makes french woemn seem more stylish. She is an American who lived in Paris for a decade married to a Frenchman.
Much Better Than French Chic!!!.......2006-07-15
I have "French Chic" by Susan Sommers also, and this book book by Veronique & Virginie Morana is more contemporary in my opinion. "The Parisian Woman's Guide To Style" is not written by an American in Paris, like Sommers. It was written in 1999 by two French natives who own a boutique in Paris. Although 6 years old, the pictures still look current in their simplicity. The authors have managed to capture classic French elegance without looking stodgy or outdated. Their basic wardrobe elemants and accessories apply whether your lifestyle is working mom, a college girl seeking to upgrade her image or even a socialite. There are some interesting beauty and style tips. The back of the book lists boutiques to check out when you're visiting France (if they're still there.) There are many great color photos as examples. The drawback is that all the recommended items are expensive and French-made, which isn't realistic for a woman on a budget. However, you can use this a guide to selecting and combining the best wardrobe pieces within your own budget when you visit department stores. You can always find good quality knock-offs.
I agree with J. Whitford, it's not worth getting.......2006-07-05
I bought this book, and several others in the whole french chic genre.
I agree Frederik Fekkai's book, A Year of Style, and Genevieve a Darieaux's book are supreme.
So is Things a Woman Should Know about Style by Karen Homer.
Leah Feldon's advice on dressing rich and dressing thin is along these lines and really good value if you are trying to create a core or capsule wardrobe along french chic lines. Which translated simply stands for quietly elegant.
Anne Barones 3 Chic and Slim books are terrific, available on her website, so you needn't pay the inflated prices on the web but they are definitely worth every penny. Google her name and the title, and the site should appear.
Finally Entre Nous was a great book discussing a lot of different aspects of french life including the diet, wardrobe, manners etc.
This book in comparison comes up WAY short. The pictures are outdated already, which wouldn't be such a problem if the text had anything of value to say.
The classic perfume list was interesting, as were the bits on what goes into the basics of a wardrobe
but you can figure that out using Karen Homers tiny but terrific little book Things a Woman Should Know about Style (which is a terrific companion to Genevieve a Dariaux's A Guide to Elegance-- it updates Genevieve quite nicely).
all in all I'd say hang onto your money, and buy:
Anne Barone's 3 Chic and Slim books,
Things a Woman Should Know about Style by Karen Homer and
Genevieve a Dariaux's A Guide to Elegance along with
Frederic Fekkai: a Year of Style (out of print now, but worth getting!) and
Does This Make Me Look Fat?: the Definitive Rules for Dressing Thin for Every Height, Size, and Shape by Leah Feldon
Leah has good advice on shopping for quality, and if you want more, she has an out of print one that dates back 20 years that still has good advice in it.
as well as Entre Nous by Debra Olliver.
That little "bookshelf" will net you a thousand times better advice on learning grace, style and chic than this little photo essay book.

Most travel guides are long on information and short on wisdom; readers going to Rome will find plenty of both in Enrico Bruschini's In the Footsteps of Popes. Bruschini, a noted expert on the Vatican, writes with the enthusiasm of Rick Steves and the calm assurance of a Fodor's guide, with a depth of knowledge about religious and art history that exceeds them both. His book is literally a step-by-step guide through the Vatican's museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica, with photographs and histories of every major point of interest, from the Pieta to Raphael's Transfiguration. Bruschini candidly informs readers of his opinions about what's worth seeing and what can be skipped. And he breathes fresh life even into descriptions of the best-known sites, as when he reminds readers of the familiar story of Michelangelo's creation of the Sistine Chapel's frescoes: for four years he worked lying on his back, "the paint dripping in his eyes." Details like that make In the Footsteps of Popes a valuable addition to the growing body of guides for spiritual travelers. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
In a tiny enclave in the heart of Rome lies the administrative and spiritual capital of Roman Catholicism, and the world's smallest independent state. Within its walls, during the course of the past fifteen hundred years, successive popes have commissioned and assembled an extraordinary collection of artistic works. Now Professor Enrico Bruschini, the eminent Vatican City expert and former fine art curator of the American embassy, takes readers inside the magnificent galleries and museums of the Vatican with a personal tour through its sacred halls. Drawing on his vast knowledge, Bruschini vividly brings to life works by Raphael, da Vinci, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, and many other artisans while sharing interesting curiosities about the artists, their art, and the historical context in which they worked. These intimate descriptions allow Bruschini to illuminate both the artistic importance of the featured works and their cultural significance as he explains the profound impact they have made on Western civilization for nearly two millennia. In addition, Bruschini's unprecedented access to areas rarely open to the public allows him to offer a unique, behind-the-scenes tour of the Vatican revealing its most intimate secrets and treasures. With rare photographs from the Vatican archives and helpfuI maps to aid future pilgrims in planning the perfect itinerary, In the Footsteps of Popes is an enticing book for Italian enthusiasts as well as armchair travelers to savor -- Bruschini offers an absolutely extraordinary Vatican tour that is not to be missed!

Hard to Use .......2006-02-05
I visited Tuscany & the Marches & Florence this past September (2005) and bought this book to guide me through planning a garden tour itinerary. Initially I thought the book's organization structure of grouping gardens in chapters devoted to a particular region would be perfect. It turned out to be very hard to use and frustrating. In the chapters, the gardens are sometimes listed by their name and sometimes by their town so there is no logical order. Plus on the maps the gardens are numbered haphazardly - the five gardens around Padua should be numbered sequentially but instead they are 2,3,4 and 8&9. The info for each garden though is detailed and lists the hours, fees, who to contact for appointment only gardens and nearby sights. It also covers the history of the garden. If you are going to tour gardens in Tuscany and Florence I would highly recommend a book I found in Florence at the Boboli Gardens. It is "Gardens of Florence and Tuscany - A Complete Guide" by Mariachiara Pozzana and is published through Giunti. The ISBN is 8809020642. It has MANY more gardens listed, lots of history and information and is well organized. Translated into English.

This is the most comprehensive guide I have found to Italian gardens open for visitng. Written by Penelope Hobhouse, one of England's foremost garden designers, it offers a real garden-lovers insight into what makes Italian gardens truly unique in style. The book is laid out in sections according to regions of Italy with good regional maps attached for route planning. Each garden has its own summary including an history of its design and later modifications, with elegant pictures, symbols denoting especial features, hours of opening, and other nearby sights worth visiting. "Gardens of Italy" is a slim volume perfect for not only plannning a comprehensive garden-accented trip from home but also small enough to carry whilst travelling. It is best used as an aide for advance planning rather than ad-hoc garden visits as many gardens are privately owned and visits are by appointment / advance arrangement only, a fact which Hobhouse notes in herforeword, but which after all is hardly her fault!
