This series is a must have for any designer. Not only is it great for ideas, but a nice tool to have when a wishy-washy client just isn't sure what they want. If you are a serious designer, you must own all the Logo Lounge books.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2007-04-14

Great book for inspiration and search for the right ideas. This time RockPub. is making few more pages showing how the logos work in the graphic design environment.

I was excited to see foreign companies using the latest styles in advertisement, like the russian phone company "BeeLine."

Wold highly recoment this book for a graphic design major and advertisement.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2007-03-16

I've used this book a couple times now for inspiration, and it doesn't disappoint. It's organized by theme, which is very helpful since it allows you to consider the myriad different ways of approaching the same challenge.

Highly recommended.

Book Description

Features 2,000 logos and provides fresh inspiration to anyone looking to direct the design of their own identity.

A searchable database of more than 36,000 logos by keyword is available by subscription on the popular website, www.logolounge.com, launched in 2002 by author Bill Gardner. If you don't have a subscription but would still like to see the best logos on the site created by top designers who often maintain low profiles, then the new paperback edition of LogoLounge 2 is for you.

Recent noteworthy projects that are claiming the public spotlight are profiled in this book. It covers identities created for various industries such as airlines, networks, dot-coms, banks, and fashion, as well as lesser-known boutique projects in which the designer's name is larger than the client's.

The first portion of the book profiles ten top designers and spotlights their biggest, newest campaigns. A handful of their smaller projects are also featured, including some that have never before been seen. The second half of the book contains almost 2,000 logos organized by logo design (typography, people, mythology, nature, sports, etc.)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great series of books!.......2007-02-26

I'm very impressed with the wide array and organization of this book (and the others in the series). Such great colors, and layout... everything just makes me want to study every last detail on every last page. I've bought the first two... and have added the third one to my wish list. If you want to be a good logo designer but experience "designer's block," this should get you over that hump. Thanks, Bill Gardner, and all the fabulous designers who were featured in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Well edited.......2007-01-10

Well printed, well edited and an excellent resource for designers and creative individuals.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-11-10

Great for idea gathering and inspiration. It keeps you up to date with the newest logo designs.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing sequel.......2005-10-22

Logo Lounge 1 is a must-have in my design library - I refer to it often. Unfortunately Logo Lounge 2 seems lackluster, uninspired, and disappointing. While it contains the same quantity of logos as the first book, the solutions are much less imaginative and the profile section at the beginning is too long and the designers profiled, and their work, are difficult to relate to.

5 out of 5 stars The Culture A.D. review.......2005-10-07

The straight to the point advertising and design agency review. For our agency Logo Lounge 2 is a excellent visual reference. It allows us to quickly "thin slice" the visual trends as well as give us in depth case studies. It's a hot source for inspiration that puts your head in the right space for designing logos that speak intelligently and conceptually to help with branding opportunities for clients and their consumers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best shopping guide yet!.......2003-04-05

This book is fabulous. Not only does it explore (and I use the word "explore" because these listings go way beyond mere addresses and phone numbers) about 500 vintage and contemporary designer resale stores all over the U.S., Canada and Online, but with the information offered on each store (what kind of merchandise is carried, price range, return policy, store owner's personal collections, description of the store itself, etc.), I feel much more confident about shopping for my newest passion, vintage clothing (almost like the authors are holding my hand and walking me thru). I also found the section that describes designers from the '20s to the '80s, along with an explanation of what was going on the world during those times, fascinating. The glossary of fashion terms is also helpful, and I loved the listings of vintage expos all over the U.S. The quotes from costume designers, and learning about vintage pieces worn by Hollywood celebrities, is definately a fun bonus. Bravo!

2 out of 5 stars This book is not worth the money.......2003-04-03

This book is basically just a list of resale stores in some bigger cities. The same information could be obtained in twenty minutes with some basic research.

5 out of 5 stars Costume Design Apprentice says: Best Book Out There!.......2003-02-20

I LOVED this book, not only was it extremely informative, but it was very practical-the $ labels were the best! I used it on a very important project and it didn't let me down once! This resource was very helpful. It is a book for anyone who has been bitten by the vintage-shopping bug. Happy shopping!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2002-12-23

What a fabulous resource for lovers of vintage clothing! I have learned about stores in Toronto that I would never have found otherwise. The detailed store descriptions are wonderful - it's interesting to learn about the history of the stores, as well as about their owners.
And what a helpful book when travelling to other cities in North America! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars I've Found Some New Favorites!.......2002-11-05

I think the mark of a good guidebook is one that can tell you new things about your hometown. Retro Chic is a *great* guidebookbook. I purchased my copy at home in Seattle, and was pleased to see that my favorite retro sources were included -- as well as several new favorites I hadn't heard about before. The information on online resources is also quite helpful, and introduced me to a whole new way of shopping for unique resale fashions. I took Retro Chic with me on a business trip to Los Angeles last week, and was able to do some wonderfully affordable consignment shopping in a city that's completely foreign to me. What a fantastic resource!

This DOES NOT appear to be a book in which the authors were paid for reviewing particular stores. The information is well organized, up-to-date, and gives plenty of clues about the stores it reviews. Listings are honest and cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from price scales and credit cards accepted to the kind of merchandise available.

This book is a great resource for anyone with a retro fetish, and a no-hassle way for people new to the "scene" to find great resale outlets in their home town, on vacation, or online. I highly recommend Retro Chic and have bought copies as gifts for two friends who recently moved across country.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Expected a "Reference Guide", Got a Picture-Book........2001-12-21

I don't know where to begin except to ask what the jacket description has to do with the book?

I was excited about reading this "must-have reference guide" that "focuses on the essential elements that create a successful online portfolio." I expected to see samples of some of the best award-wining online portfolios along with discussions of the salient features that make them so successful and the means by which they were achieved.

I hoped for some descriptions or tips on how winning portfolio designers select and organize content, what types of interfaces and technologies they choose to present their work, how they translate that into success in their fields of work,...

What I got was a (bad) coffee-table book full of screen-shots of web portfolios with little snippets of hyperbole in accompanying blurb-boxes on every other page for the first 2/3 of the book. I never saw such a content-free "reference guide" in my life. Between pages 112 and 154 there is NO TEXT other than 2-word captions to thumbnail-sized website screenshots which are, frankly, a waste of the high-quality glossy stock on which they are printed. They are too small to make out any of the supposed "ooh and ahh" details. Worst of all, what little text there was to read was poorly written - rife with grammatical errors.

This book was an incredible disappointment, very ill-conceived, and falsely advertised. Would someone like to buy my copy?

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Visual Guide.......2001-11-21

Full of ideas and colorful layouts that help you navigate visually through the maze of creating a website. Great reference tool for showing how designers present their work.

1 out of 5 stars Bad purchase.......2001-11-16

This book has no content. You can barely read a bit about the websites featured there, and most of them are outdated. Although the book is published in 2001, websites there seem to be old.

I didn't agree with the choices of the websites this book features either. It seems like it has been put together by someone who really doesn't spend that much time on the Internet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lunchbox Studios.......2005-03-01

Isabella Valentine's report of Lunchbox Studios being out of business is not quite accurate - I just bought their font set today (03/01/05). The company is in transition, having moved recently from New York City to Los Angeles. The Web site has yet to be updated with the current contact information, so it's easy to understand how Isabella concluded that they're out of business (I almost gave up myself). Lunchbox is actually under the same roof as Reelhouse.com.

Actually I'm just as happy for Isabella's comment, since it led me to Lunchbox and their excellent set of fonts.

4 out of 5 stars Just one small problem.......2004-07-27

Yes this book has some of the best fonts online and gives websites on where to buy them.

Yes this book is excellent quality, full color, excellent graphics, accurate, edited wonderfully.

Yes this is a fantastic fonts book - one of the best I've seen.

But... one small problem. A huge majority of these fonts come one website (lunchbox studios) which is no longer in business. I tried to buy the fonts myself. The company turned off their phone, their credit card system, etc. even though their website looks like it is up and working. So even though the fonts may LOOK good in the book... they will most likely not be available where it says.

5 out of 5 stars Web Type is a Knock-Out (Editor's Choice).......2002-03-07

This book was selected as our Editor's Choice for March 2002 for several reasons...
First, it's a masterpiece of visual delights -- each of the fonts reviewed includes the font in creative use, actual publications where they have appeared, or simply a creative expression.
Most importantly, the book contains full descriptions, foundry, author/artist and details about the font. Then the second half of the book shows full font listings in both positive and negative. Sweet.
All in all the book is a delight to hold and browse. Even if you're not looking for a font, the visuals are stunning -- printed in full color on 100lb enamel stock.
We highly recommend "Designers Guide to Web Type" for your connection to the best fonts online... or purely for its aesthetic value -- making it the editor's choice in this month's Design-Bookshelf.com.

1 out of 5 stars Success Secrets ??? For Selling (Fill in the Blank).......2007-03-22

The CD never mentions designer handbags or any specific product sales strategy. Instead the CD offers general motivational tips for sales business focusing on personal improvement and goal setting. The recording is of low to moderate sound quality with the the contents an apparent phone conversation between the authors. It is curious and highly suspect that the authors are offering approximately 1700 versions of Breakthrough Success Secrets For Selling (Fill in the Blank) with no real distinction in content. Somehow these authors have created almost 100,000 Amazon listings of similar vague stuff. This suggests that they have a method of creating seller listings on Amazon which they are not disclosing to us. The CD's appear to be sold directly by the authors via the Weblaunch (Bowman) and Learntoberich (Orr) storefronts. Bowman also maintains the openvistas storefront where I bought this CD a few days ago for $0.67 plus S&H.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wide styles - limited access.......2004-06-18

Great reference and certainly worth the price. Some fonts are no longer on-line so I take away one star. (Not the fault of the book, however.)

5 out of 5 stars Better than Advertised.......2004-05-17

Given all the previous criticism below, I would have never bought the book. Luckily for me, I saw it at a retail outlet first before seeing it here.

I don't know what other people were expecting, but the book does exactly what it says, help find free fonts online. THIS IS THE INTERNET and information changes all the time! That being said, I bought the book 1 1/2 years after it first came out but was still able to find most of the sites and fonts. My only disappointment is that the fonts by Rodney Fehsenfeld are gone.

Who cares if the book lists the most popular sites out there, just do a Google search instead. At the top will be My Fonts, 1001 Fonts and other also-rans with thousands of hideous fonts that hopefully never see the light of day or page. Sure, it takes time to navigate different sites, but the fonts are FREE.
The designers wouldn't have put their fonts in the book without getting something in return---us looking at their sites.

One of the best things about the book is that it shows how a font looks on paper and composed with some sort of graphic. I don't have to squint at a fuzzy onscreen shot that looks okay only to find out later the font looks horrible printed. All in all, I found this book useful and was really glad to find it because I can't afford to just buy all the fonts I want and didn't know where to start looking for free ones either.

It's one of the few good books out there on the subject, and if people out there keep complaining, then there won't any in the future. NO, I AM NOT the Author.

2 out of 5 stars Great idea, good fonts, poor execution.......2003-10-13

This book was an impulse buy for me, after browsing through the handsome samples at a store. A collection of free, high quality fonts is a great idea, both for designers and for the foundries and type houses who use them as a means of advertising their other fonts. The editors worked to present quality over quantity (that said, previous reviewers take note: three Blambot fonts are featured here).

So why only two stars? I noticed before leaving the store that the book didn't include the fonts on CD. No big deal; surely the editors would include a way to download the collection somewhere online. Wrong!

Without a CD or at least a centralized online links list, guess what? You have to go Net-slogging every time you want to use one of these great fonts. Most can't be found at collection sites such as MyFonts and 1001Fonts. I'm no newbie, but getting these from their native sites varied from difficult to nearly impossible.

I tried every site in the book, and wound up navigating through Japanese, German and French pages with cryptic interfaces, filling out forms in Brazilian, running into out-of-date URLs, "404 not found" dead links, etc. It will definitely NOT be worth the hassle for many designers. For example, typelife.com had some of the best samples in the book. But this site currently has no links to fonts and hasn't been updated in at least three months.

Beyond that, there are problems with the "Free" part of the title. Some fonts here aren't free at all -- Borgstrand, Typing with Rudolf, and September Eleven are definitely (well, at this current moment) pay fonts. Other fonts such as Cypher 7, Freestyle, La Lienne, etc. are "not free for commercial use." In other words, you can write a letter with them or make an exit sign to your personal bathroom, but you can't use them in any commercial, paying job without buying additional rights. And there are other loopy restrictions: e.g., the Blambot fonts are only free if you're using them in independent comics.

On top of everything else, a fair number of the fonts are PC only, so Mac users have to find a way to convert them.

The fonts should have been included in Windows and Mac versions on an organized CD, even if it bumped production cost up a few bucks. Even without a CD, a simple online page by the editors with live, current links to the various fonts and/or typehouses would have made a difference. And "free" should mean FREE, or change the title or the fonts!

1 out of 5 stars Which internet?.......2003-05-19

Which internet are these people browsing? The internet I know shows apostrophiclab.com and blambot.com to be the most potent free font sites on the web, but they're not even mentioned in this book. What about the endless free offerings of Rich Gast and Graham Meade? Not in this book. I'm getting a refund, I hope.

1 out of 5 stars Why bother?.......2002-11-30

This book is too small. It lists some free font sites but does not list some of the most popular ones, like apostrophic lab, greywolf webworks, gemfonts, blambot and a few others. Buy something else because this book is not worth it.

5 out of 5 stars More than satisfied.......2003-07-28

A thin reference to 60+ symbol and icon fonts available online, this book succeeds on all levels: high quality and tasteful printing and layout, great content, and an inarguably fair price (when compared to many books of similar content and quality.) In addition to being a reference to the 60 or so symbol/icon fonts described, illustrated, and utilized in this book, but it is a pleasure to look at - whether searching for a bit of inspiration for your own creative twist, or for finding professional symbol and icon fonts on the web. I am very happy I purchased this book, and look forward to using it for some time to come. I highly recommend this book to graphic or web designers.
