BLOWN AWAY.......2007-06-08
I CAN ONLY ASPIRE TO HAVE A SMIDGEON OF THE TALENT DISPLAYED IN THIS BOOK.
Wildlife artist.......2007-05-13
I found this book good for painting backgrounds for wild animals and settings to place the wildlife in, something I have not always found easy.
It also gives examples of different lighting effects which I found useful.
It covers all types of mediums.
Great Talent!.......2006-12-04
After reviewing several books on painting animals, I chose this book. The artist provides in depth advice. The book also explains how to prepare masonite board to paint on. I've never done this, but I want to try it. This is a great book that is easily understood.
If you buy one book on wildlife and animal painting in oils, this book should be your first choice!.......2006-08-09
I have been an professional artist for over 30 years, and I recently purchased about 7 books on painting animals to improve my skills.
This book by far, no comparison, is the best. The information
and painting demos and examples are easy to understand and follow, and would help any artist no matter what level they are at.
His paintings along with those of other artists included are
top quality, offering a feast for the heart and eyes to any
artist.
Edward Aldrich gives you some of the best painting step by step
information, not leaving you asking questions, like some books.
He tells you exactly how he paints to get the warm and glowing
results to create his beautiful wildlife paintings.
Plus tons of other great painting information.
This is the best money I have spent on a book on painting.
If you like his paintings you will love this book.
Thank you Edward for really giving of yourself, sharing your art, and knowhow, and choosing great examples of other professionals.
I have learned so much, your book is a gem!
Book Description
Artists and naturalists will master their ability to render lifelike depictions of a wide range of wildlife in a variety of still and action poses in this unique instructional. Amberlyn begins by offering a discourse on animal anatomy, basic animal structure and characteristics, and the animals' natural environment. Such details are examined and explored through more than 300 detailed animal studies.
More advanced topics include drawing the three major animal categories: carnivores/omnivores (wolves, coyotes, weasels, raccoons, and bears), hoofed mammals (deer, elk, moose, caribou, and sheep), and small mammals (rabbits, squirrels, mice, beaver, and armadillo). Readers will transform their mediocre interpretations into drawings that truly capture the essence and subtleties of the animal, its mood, and its habitat.

Excellent Book.......2007-03-16
I checked this book out at the library before I decided to buy it. It is wonderful. It doesn't just show you how to draw each animal. It focuses on each aspect of the animal and different types of each animal. An example would be the cat family. It shows you how to draw eyes, paws, ears, face, nose etc... It shows you direction of the fur, so however you draw this type of animal you will be accurate. In the cat section, it explains the Canadian Lynx, Bobcat, and Mountain Lion, with all their subtle differences. It then shows you how to draw the Mountain Lion.
I believe I have learned a lot in this book. It is, by far, the best drawing book I have ever read and used and I think it is a necessity to anyone wanting to learn how to draw animals. I highly recommend it!
More expensive version of Jack Hamm.......2007-02-01
The book is all right. I learned a few extra things that I didn't learn from Jack Hamm's How to Draw Animals. But I kept feeling like I was reading Hamm's book a lot. If you don't have a lot of money, Hamm's book will give you just as much for almost half the price.
And both books should really be called How to Draw Mammals. There's nothing about reptiles, birds, or fish in them.
A Keeper.......2006-02-03
I'm the type of person that buys a lot of books, and if I don't use them much, I re-sell them or give them away. But "Drawing Wildlife" has become one of my favorite reference books that I'll never get rid of. I make animals and people (sculptures) from wool, using the process of needle felting. This book has become one of my most used guides to get proportions correct, expressions authentic, and shading/coloring accurate. The author even explains which direction theh animal's hair lays, and gives beautiful details down to the toes or hooves. In whatever medium you create, if you include wildlife, you need this book.
Great reference for North American Mammals.......2005-05-26
If you're at all interested in learning more about drawing North American mammals, this book is SOOO worth it! She goes into detail about structure, the simplified forms of the animals, their movements, and the hair patterns! She covers a lot of species other books have missed, like the small rodents, the cacomistle, the opossum, and others. My only real quibble with the book is the title (which I think J.C. didn't choose, anyway- the publisher named the book.) Every time I open this book, I find something new to marvel at. Her knowledge of animal anatomy is amazing and extensive. I hope she does a book on drawing birds as well!
Both Skill and Passion..........2005-05-17
J.C. Amberlyn's first art book is remarkable in several aspects. Not only does she have a clear, concise way of passing on her hard-won knowledge of anatomy and artistic technique; she also delights in sharing her love and respect for the amimals that she portrays. Her simple, direct instructions will be of use to the seasoned artist who lacks her years of field observation, as well as young people just starting to draw.
This little volume is destined, I think, to become a standard reference to those who value the "nuts & bolts" basics of wildlife art; one of those books that are kept at hand to review again and again. It's a "keeper".

The best way to teach drawing I've ever seen!.......2005-08-20
I was thrilled when I received my copies of Steve Barr's books. His approach to teaching the art of drawing cartoons is fantastic! From the beginning, he points out that there are "No Rules!". I love this approach for teaching children, and also for "big kids" like myself! People of all ages will learn a lot from his books, and have so much fun along the way. Each book shows step-by-step ways to accomplish adorable cartoons. I highly recommend this book to parents with budding artists, and to schools for their art classes!
Book Description
With clear instructions and detailed illustrations, this guide reveals how artists can render anatomically correct versions of two popular owl species: the screech owl and the snowy owl. Wood carvers, sculptors, and other artists are provided with detailed line drawings that document the bird’s natural behavior and demonstrate how to realistically portray their heads, beaks, and claws as well as their top and underside feather patterns. More than 50 scaled illustrations of the outsized snowy owl are accompanied by convenient scale charts, while nearly 100 life-size drawings are offered for the smaller screech owl. An opening section on the physiology of both species and their habits, comprehensive field notes, and exclusive color charts with paint references by Lori Corbett complete this invaluable resource.
Book Description
Representing more than 60 species found throughout North America, this portfolio includes field sketches, drawings of footprints, and photographs of animals taken in their natural habitats. Rather than a drawing manual, this is a reference geared toward artists of any media interested in drawing animals. The book's large-scale format facilitates detailed sketches that capture the true nature of the species. Flat artists can use this guide as a starting point for larger compositions, while sculptors and woodcarvers can use it to define natural-looking poses for their subjects.
Customer Reviews:
This book is beautifully Done, however, if you want birds in flight? This one is dissappointing.......2006-02-28
This book, as does all of Mr. Lindstrand's work, shows a very high level of skill through sketchwork done on a huge variety of animals both land and air. There are many birds of prey showing great detail and nuance of differences between each one shown. I had hoped for more work on the Eagle. While there are some good pointers and sketch workups on the Bald Eagle I have yet to find a viable sketch of one of these majestic birds while in flight. this seems true of the other bird depictions in the book as well. The other animals of the cold country north are all shown very nicely in all their magesty, but these birds are lifeless and flightless for the most part and I was sorely dissappointed for that reason. The sheer number of birds included is astounding and I had hoped for more activity of form and flight shown in the work than what I actually found to be there.
Excellent book.......2000-03-05
This book has an extremely wide selection of animals showing actual pictures, footprints, evironments, and drawings of the animals themselves in a variety of poses. Also included, are numerous field notes with regard to habitat, animal behavior, and likely scenarios for drawing these animals in natural settings.
Book Description
Compiled with artistic attention to detail and texture, this book offers photographs, sketches, and field notes useful to environmental artists who want to render deer with greater accuracy. All species of North American deer are profiled in a wide variety of seasons and settings, ranging from the Florida Keys to the Alaskan frontier. Artists who work in mediums such as woodcarving, scrollsawing, painting, woodburning, sketching, and illustrating will learn how to capture deer in motion and at rest.
