Book Description
How do language policies in education serve the interests of dominant groups within societies? How do policies marginalize some students while granting privilege to others? How do language policies in schools create inequalities among learners? How can schools further the educational, social, and economic interests of linguistic minorities?
These questions--the focus of the chapters in this book-- are at the heart of fundamental debates about the role of schools in society; the links between language policies and inequalities of class, region, and ethnicity/nationality; and conflicts between linguistic minorities and "mainstream" populations. The connections between language policies and inequality are examined, as well as successful efforts to use language policies in education to assert the social and linguistic rights of language minorities.
*All of the chapters are original and substantial contributions to the study of language policy and exemplify major theories and research methods in the field.
*The case studies are international in scope, including cutting-edge analyses of important language policy debates in North America, Australia, Eastern Europe, Africa, East Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific.
*The multiple meanings of critical language policy study are highlighted. First, the term refers to the field of critical linguistics. Second, the book seeks to develop readers' ability to critically "read" language policies--that is, to understand the social and political implications of particular policies adopted in specific historical contexts. Third, it features chapters that are critical of traditional analyses that fail to capture the full social and political context of language policies and too often accept uncritically the claims of policy.
*Sections are included on theoretical issues in language policies; the use of language policy for governance; the role of language policy in managing ethnic conflict; the link between language and globalization; and the impact of critical pedagogy on social change.
This volume is intended for scholars and other specialists in language policy, education, applied linguistics, critical linguistics, and language teaching. It is designed for use as a textbook in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on language policy and language education.

Book Description
FROM THE PREFACE Dynamic modeling, computer simulation, and modern control systems are valuable tools for use in both the design and operation of dynamic systems. From the "tools" point of view, this book is designed to show practicing engineers how to develop models capable of describing dynamic behavior and how to "solve" these models using computer simulation. The basic principles of process control are also presented so that the effects of different control systems on dynamic behavior can be established by computer simulation.

Basic Arrhythmias (6th Edition)
ASIN: 0131101439 |
Book Description
Developed out of the authors' numerous years of successful classroom instruction to hundreds of students in ACLS courses. This book contains the essential information necessary to prepare a candidate for the American Heart Association's ACLS Provider course. Concepts are presented in a logical manner that allows the reader to progress from a foundation of basic core knowledge (first six chapters) to more complex case management material. As the chapters progress, the information, cases and algorithms become more complex, requiring integration of the knowledge gained in previous chapters. Continuous reinforcement is a critical aspect of this book and will give your readers not only the understanding necessary to pass ACLS, but also the confidence to use it. For advanced emergency medical providers.
Customer Reviews:
ACLS...basic and advanced.......2003-12-31
This book takes you from basic ACLS algorithms through to more advanced ACS than is covered in the typical ACLS textbook. It is very well done and should be added to anyone's colelction who is either going to be taking ACLS or is looking for a book to pull off the shelf for review purposes. It will serve either reasons well and is a fantastic new addition to my collection of about 40 Fire/EMS textbooks.

Customer Reviews:
good advice about classroom process; less on specific scientific content.......2006-09-26
As a former educator who now finds it necessary to organize privately a science class for students in the K-6 range, I find it useful to have a painstakingly crafted position piece like this that advocates for such newer kinds of educational thinking.
As a scientist, I would think that younger teachers could get lost in all the meta-content, especially if they have little experience of having DONE science (as opposed to learning about it.) That said, for an experienced scientist, this book provides a promising change from the fact-cramming drudgery prevalent in weaker primary, secondary, tertiary, and even professional schools (notably law and medicine.)
Much of the information was thoughtful and well organized - such as the appendix on systems theory (aka complexity.)
Given rapid development in some sciences, perhaps the author was reasonable in not trying to provide more detail on what technical content to master. However, without a firm commitment to scientific substance, readers risk creating a holistic utopia light on content. Such a risk, though, is small compared to the much greater risk the book aims to prevent: teaching of dead facts rather than of the collaborative and often unpredictable experience of discovery.

Book Description
Arguing that the rescue of the Jewish people has been consistently misinterpreted, The Myth of Rescue states that no Jew who perished in the Holocaust could have been saved by any action of the Western Allies.
Presenting what was actually known of the Holocaust at the time and what actions were realistically possible, William D. Rubinstein traces the development of the arguments surrounding the debate and debunks the "myths" that were generated in the 1970s and '80s: the myth of the closed-door immigration policies in the years 1933-40 and the plans for rescue proposed by the democracies--including the bombing of concentration camps, the possibility that the War Refugee Board could have saved more Jews, and the rumors of negotiations between the democracies and Nazis to save Jewish lives.
Since its publication in mid 1997, The Myth of Rescue has commanded attention from all fronts, prompting a range of reactions--from vitriolic criticism to high praise. In this paperback edition, William D. Rubinstein addresses his critics in a new introduction, and armed with astounding scholarship, comments further on the many alleged lost opportunities for saving Jews available to the Allies.
Customer Reviews:
well written well researched - .......2006-03-10
William D. Rubinstein's book The Myth of Rescue is a critical look at the arguments made by historians of the Nazi holocaust that the allied countries could have done more to save the Jews under the control of the Nazis. The argument has been made that Britain and the United States closed their doors to Jewish immigration in the 1930's and ignored feasible plans to rescue Jews after the Second World War had begun. Rubinstein argues that this is a misrepresentation of the facts. In The Myth of Rescue, Rubinstein looks at these arguments and shows that the only reasonable course of action open to Britain and the United States was to defeat the Nazi's as soon as possible. Rubinstein wrote "that stopping Hitler's genocide was impossible without destroying Nazi Germany.
The first myth that Rubinstein discusses is the myth that Jews were trapped in Germany before the war because the surrounding countries refused to accept Jewish immigrants. Rubinstein writes that this is the standard historical view of Jewish immigration and has named it the "Myth of Closed Doors." Rubinstien argues that for an accurate look at pre 1939 immigration only the Jews living within the borders of Germany should be considered, because Jews living in other countries could not have been expected to predict that Nazi Germany would soon take over all off Europe, and those Jews living in the Soviet Union would not have been free to leave even if they had known what their fate would be. Including the French controlled Rhineland, Austria and the Sudentland there were only 500,000 Jews in Germany in 1933. In 1942, when emigration from Nazi controlled Europe was forbidden the number of Jews living in Germany had shrunk to around 139,000. 72 percent of Jews living in Germany emigrated between 1933 and 1942, with the vast majority leaving in 1939 on the eve of the war. The vast majority of the German Jews emigrated to Great Britain, France, Holland and the United States, which accepted over 85,000 Jewish Immigrants in the prewar years. Almost all of the six million Jews killed in the Nazi death camps were from conquered lands and those Jews that were German had probably already left their homes in Germany only to be recaptured in another country.
The Jews who did stay in Germany did so not because it was difficult or impossible to gain admittance into another country but because they did not want to leave and felt that the anti-Semitism of the Nazi's was just a "passing phenomenon and, in time, everything would be wonderful again."
The second myth that Rubinstien discusses is the myth that the European Jews could have been rescued. Rubinstien writes that since before 1942 all Jews, with the exception of those in the territory controlled by the Soviet Union, were free to leave and after 1942 were held virtual prisoner, no rescue would have been feasible without the destruction of the Nazis. Many historians argue that Hitler's Final Solution was not made until after 1941. Before this date Hitler's plan was to send the German Jews to some isolated place like Madagascar. They argue that this plan changed for two reasons. First, after 1941 the Nazis no longer had the ability to transport massive amounts of people off of the European continent. Secondly, it was after 1941 that virtually all nine million of Europe's Jews fell under the power Hitler. This gave Hitler an opportunity he could not pass up, to eradicate all of Europe of the Jews. If Hitler himself did not know until 1941 that he was planning to exterminate the Jews of Europe how can the U.S. and Britain be blamed for not knowing prior to 1939?
When the first accounts of the Nazi's atrocities started to reach the west in mid 1942, allied leaders realized that the best way to end them was by defeating Nazi Germany, a course of action they were already taking. Critics of the Allied Nations role during the war have claimed that they ignored feasible plans to rescue the Jews, but according to Rubinstien these critics cite these feasible plans in their works. Rubinstien does not just dismiss all post 1941 plans for the rescue of the European Jews. He takes several plans that were proposed during the war, analyzes them and explains in detail why they would have been unsuccessful. One plan submitted by the American Jewish Congress called for the sending of massive amounts of food and supplies to the concentration camps and ghettos. This proposal was made on the false belief that Hitler was exterminating the Jews only because he could no longer afford to feed them. All the plans offered involve negotiating with Hitler, and fail to completely understand the inhumanity of Hitler and the Nazis.
Another myth put forward in the The Myth of Rescue is that the bombing of Auschwitz would have halted the extermination of Jews and saved countless lives. Rubinstien dismisses this for two reasons. The first being that it was never proposed to the military. The only proposal coming close to the bombing of Auschwitz was the bombing of the rail lines leading to the camp. The second reason is that it was not until late in the war that U.S. bombers would have been in range of Auschwitz and that even when they were in range the U.S. resources were tied up at Normandy and the western front. When a proposal to bomb the rail lines reached of the U.S. Assistant of War John J. McCloy his official response was that "the most effective relief to the victims is the early defeat of the Axis."
The Myth of Rescue is a well thought out and exhaustively researched book. Rubinstien takes the most widely held criticisms of the Allied actions from 1933 to 1945 regarding the Jews and studies them closely for factual errors and flaws in theory. He uses first hand accounts, official documents and the works of many noted historians to dismiss the idea that more could have been done to ease the suffering of the Jews in Europe as pure myth.
When Rubinstien discussed immigration of Jews out of Nazi controlled lands prior to 1942 he used and provides the numbers from the census reports of Germany and the countries that they emigrated to. When he discussed the bombing of Auschwitz, Rubinstien poured over official Army Air Corps records and interviewed experts on the air war in Europe. The Myth of Rescue is not Rubinstien's opinions. It is almost all facts that he has provided the sources for.
Rubinstien claimed that when he began to write the book his intentions were much different. His thesis was that there was much the U.S. and Britain could have done to help the Jews, but as he honestly researched for the book he discovered that there was little more that could have been done.
a very surprising and important history.......2005-09-01
I've only just started reading this excellent historical analysis, so I can't comment on most of it, but those 40 or so pages I've read are very impressive. Like far too many 20th-century men, I've spent far too much time reading about this period and thought I knew all the salient details. Wrong again. William D. Rubinstein's dissection of current folklore about 1933-45 is an eye-opener: detailed, passionate and very well-written, the kind of history that I wish I'd read twenty years ago.
Some startling figures leapt off the page: that in 1933, 37,000 German Jews fled, but in 1934, perhaps 16,000 returned to Germany (Page 23). That British consular officials in Germany and Austria issued some 50,000 visas for admission to Britain that were never used (Page 28). I expect many more such revelations.
There has been a tremendous volume of careful revision of our understanding of the persecution of European Jews: Rubinstein has written one of the most interesting and challenging of them. It's refreshing to read such powerful criticism of those arrogant and self-righteous authors who assume that they can sit at their desks and second-guess the decisions that the democracies were forced to make over 60 years ago. Anyone who cares about historical accuracy and fairness - and the ethical dimensions of historical research - should read 'The Myth of Rescue'.
Good refutation of "Allies could have saved the Jews" myth.......2005-05-06
I really liked this book. It is a nicely written denial of all those assertations that pop up in various articles and books that the Allies, particularly England and the US, could have done much more to save the Jews than they did. Dr Rubinstein demolishes these arguments one by one in a systematic and historically fair manner. Other reviewers have outlined these "what-ifs" pretty well so I won't bother to.
I have two minor gripes with the book. The first is that it is too short. If Goldhagen could write some 500 pages on his ridiculous theory that the German people themselves, not Hitler and his Nazis, killed the Jews, than Rubinstein could have spent more than 216 pages (plus a ton of endnotes) on refuting them. My second complaint is that he seems to have minimized the role of Pope Pius XII and the Catholic Church in saving hundreds of thousands of Jews. He only calls the Vatican's role "controversial and much debated" - he should have done his homework a little better on this topic.
Otherwise, this is a well written and well reasoned book - very highly recommended.
necessary thought imperfect.......2002-01-04
This book restores common sense to an issue poisoned with a blame everybody paranoiac attitude common to victimized groups.
Adolf Hitler trapped Jews in Europe and his minions murdered them. The Allies were sacrificing their economies and the lives of their citizens by the thousands daily at full throttle in a life and death war to end his rule and his evil. And that was the only realistic rescue effort possible or at least conceivable to the Allies, including Jewish leaders of the time.
While this book is not comprehensive -- it is the first of its type -- it does give a fresh persepctive. One interesting detail among many is that the leadership of the Jewish Agency for Palestine originally formally opposed bombing Auschwitz for fear of killing more Jews.
The author hedges and fudges his case a little by saying that even if there was a failure of will or effort, there was nevertheless the failure of possibility as well. Not much to do except win the war as Jews were in the hands of an obsessed powerful psychopath.
But the main fact remains -- saving Jews from Hitler was a goal of the Allied war effort (and pre-war humanitarian efforts) but it was subordinated to the effort of defeating Hitler because that was seen at the time as the best means and because there was, in most cases if not all, little else to be done.
But blame the world is a common and appealing cry of victimized groups, to those who feel strangely comforted by finding racism and anti-Semitism everywhere and from everyone.
Thought-Provoking, But Could Be Expanded.......2001-08-18
One of the most convincing facts presented by this book is the information on the accuracy of bomb hits by Allied bombers. From this, the author Rubinstein makes it clear that a bombing raid on Auschwitz, even if "successful" would more likely wipe out the barracks and kill many Jews (and Poles, along with inmates of other nationalities) without putting the gas chambers and crematoria out of commission. And, although the author mentions Babi Yar as proof that the Germans did not need death camps to make the Holocaust work, this could have been further developed. For instance, Albert Speer pointed out that, had the death camps been destroyed, all the Germans needed to do would be to revert to the pre-1942 method of killing Jews (and millions of gentiles also): Local roundups of victims with mass shootings on the outskirts of towns where they lived, followed by burial in mass graves (or mass cremations on pyres). Many other facts in this book could be expanded. For instance, accusations that the Polish Underground deliberately (because of alleged anti-Semitism) did not sabotage the rail lines leading to the death camps can be refuted by identical arguments against their bombings, as told by Rubinstein: Destroyed tracks can often be replaced in hours or days, and there are several alternative railroad routes to the death camps. In addition, many of the routes to Auschwitz do not even occur in German-occupied Polish territory. Finally, if the Polish Underground proved incapable of rescuing millions of Polish-gentile inmates from the German-Nazi concentration camps, it can hardly be argued that they deliberately avoided preventing the Holocaust of Jews.

Book Description
In the aftermath of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and the systematic exile and incarceration of thousands of Japanese Americans, the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council was born. Created to facilitate the movement of Japanese American college students from concentration camps to colleges away from the West Coast, this privately organized and funded agency helped more than four thousand incarcerated students pursue higher education at more than six hundred schools during WWII.
Allan W. Austin’s
From Concentration Camp to Campus examines the Council's work and the challenges it faced in an atmosphere of pervasive wartime racism. Austin also reveals the voices of students as they worked to construct their own meaning for wartime experiences under pressure of forced and total assimilation. Austin argues that the resettled students succeeded in reintegrating themselves into the wider American society without sacrificing their connections to community and their Japanese cultural heritage.

5 Stars...Buy (& Read!) This Book.......2006-08-10
This book was very well written, very accurate, and an overall excellent study into the subject. One of the few I recommend to friends. Author is sharp as a tack.
