5 out of 5 stars A classic book in spanish.......2007-01-16

What's not to love about this childrens favorite? Perfect for all those who start spanish in school.

5 out of 5 stars We love this book!.......2006-09-15

My daughter is only 20 months old now, but we began reading this book to her at about 14 months. She has learned the names of fruits in spanish and how to count to 5 within a couple of weeks of beginning to read it. It is one of her favorite books along with "Oso pardo, Oso pardo...". This is one of the required books for a spanish class that she will be beginning when she turns 2. As a spanish speaker it is a really easy book for me to read with fun pictures that my daughter enjoys. Even now she loves to put her fingers in the holes to count the fruit. For parents/caregivers who are not quite as experienced in reading spanish, it may be a little difficult to pronounce some of the words, but with some help you should be able to read the words effortlessly after a few times. My parents and in-laws don't speak much english and they love reading these spanish books to their granddaughter. It's a great way for them to bond.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish version of a classic!.......2004-12-05

This Spanish version of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is just as cute as the English version. Children will love the pages of varying sizes with holes where the caterpillar has eaten up the food.

You can also practice counting up to five with your little one as the bug eats one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, etc.

The vocabulary in this book DOES require a Spanish speaker in the home. My husband does not speak Spanish and this book is too hard for him to read to our babies, whereas he can read other Spanish board books. Additionally, as it is only in Spanish, my husband cannot compare the Spanish words to English.

Still, I think it's a great addition to your library if one adult speaks Spanish and you are trying to teach your children the language too.

5 out of 5 stars So cool!.......2004-05-23

In case you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats. The board book version has holes in the pages so the reader can see what he has eaten. It is so cute! The illustrations are adorable and the kids love it! We are a bilingual family so my boys have the Spansih version. It's super and very durable!

Book Description

Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, & servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life and her own depend on it.

4 out of 5 stars Yo, Yo,Yo!! By Jacky-Boy .......2007-09-10

Yo, Yo, Yo, Pay attention I'm telling you about a great book. Sheesh!! Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan shows how the life of a young rich girl is turns upside down and how she struggles to keep her family afloat. To begin, Esperanza's life is perfect. She lives on a huge ranch in Mexico surrounded by servants. Then, in a stunning turn of events her father is murdered by bandits. After the death of her father, the greed of her uncles forces Esperanza, her mother and three of their former servants to move to California to find work. Unknown to Esperanza and her family is that her greedy uncles want the ranch for themselves. Esperanza's uncle asks for her mother hand in marriage so they can both have the ranch. Esperanza's mother is unwilling to do so. So seeking revenge the uncles burn down their beautiful house. In the process they injure Esperanza's Abuelita (Grandmother). After sending her to recuperate with her sisters, Esperanza, her mother, Alfonso, Miguel, and Hortensia go to California. Once in California they go to a work camp. No sooner had they gotten settled in, then Esperanza's mother is taken ill by Valley Fever. Too weak to continue working, she is sent to the hospital and Esperanza must take over work for her to pay the bills. She is also saving to bring Abuelita to California. If you wish to know what happens you must read the book for yourself. Mwah hah hah hah!! Believe you will like it (if you don't then you're just a little weird). =]

This book was on my middle schooler's summer reading list. He loved the book. He finished it in 1 & 1/2 days.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Both Worlds.......2007-07-01

This has been one of my favorite books since I read it. It Is about a gilr who has luxury and over night all of that vanishes. She is forced to live in California and work hard. While she is ther she is trying to work. But then her mom gets sick and she works extra hard to pay her mom`s bills andraise money to bring her abuelita( grama) to her mom. She also has feelings for Miguel, a servant boy. I give this unbelievable book 5 stars. I would give it more if i could.

Book Description

Buenas noches, Luna

4 out of 5 stars Great for bedtime... but the rhymes were lost in translation.......2007-07-23

My 2 yr. old loves to call out every object in the pages. Since the text is meant to rhyme in the english version - wich gives it its charm- we read it in both languages. We are delighted by its simplicity and can't go a night without it. We love it and it will be passed on to my younger one.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic book, even better in Spanish.......2007-04-25

I think I love this book even more than my kids, & this is their favorite.
The simple rhyming lines are even more beautiful in Spanish. My kids can repeat the entire book... And who doesn't love Margaret Wise Brown?

5 out of 5 stars Great Spanish reinforcement.......2007-03-23

I've read Goodnight moon to my now 5 month-old baby every night since he was less than two months old. Since most of the books I have are in English and I want to raise my child bilingual, I decided to get our nightly routine book in Spanish for more reinforcement. It is great, he recognizes the book that we read in English, and I can read him in my native language helping him become a bilingual child.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet book..........2007-01-19

I love this book in Spanish as much as I do in English. It doesn't lose any of it's rythme in the translation.

5 out of 5 stars Clásico.......2007-01-19

Classic in Spanish. Most children own the English version, so the Spanish version will be familiar. I like that it is not bilingual, and the translation is very well done. Flowing "buenas noches, luna... buenas noches, habitación..." makes it easy for children to learn vocabulary. My kids love to find el ratoncito (little mouse) on each page and la luna. I am a fluent Spanish speaker, mother and teacher. I use this book as one of my staples in class for preschoolers from baby to age 5.

Book Description

Revised and updated with new phrases and vocabulary, new questions and answers, and new tables presenting basic English verbs, this favorite language-learning program is for Latinos in the United States and Canada who need to develop a practical, working use of spoken English, and who want to learn quickly and informally. Author William Harvey bypasses the dull rules of grammar and takes the practical route by presenting a series of informal conversations by speakers who converse in normal idiomatic American English. Emphasis is placed on correct pronunciation, and many helpful tips are offered, including short-cuts to clear spoken English expression and comprehension. Amusing cartoon-style illustrations help to convey understanding of English.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than a generic ESL book........2007-09-27

I teach English to adult Latinos, and the generic ESL text (i.e., a book not designed for speakers of a specific foreign language) we were using earlier was just awful. My students really love using this book, and I can absolutely notice a marked improvement in their English. One caveat is that if you are an ESL tutor or teacher, you need to have a good knowledge of Spanish in order to make proper use of this text.

5 out of 5 stars a good place to start.......2007-08-14

Ingles para Latinos is a good first book to study in a group or by yourself with a little help. Practical and user friendly.

3 out of 5 stars does not provide good pronounciation tips........2007-06-26

i was looking for a book for a spanish speaking friend that will teach the spanish speaker how to correctly pronounce English words. It's very difficult to do in a book because of the many dialect differences in spanish and because there are many English sounds that don't exist in spanish.

the "th" sound as in "the," or "three" (the spanish speaker from SPAIN or Cuba may be the few who may easily learn this because they tend to pronounce some of z's and s's like "th")

the "sh" sound as in "shoe," "radiation," "sugar," etc.

the letter "v" sound as in "vase" (in spanish, the "v" sound doesn't exist because it's identical to the letter "b." there's not a way to phonetically spell the english letter "v" in spanish without explaining that the "v" is "kind of like a smooth f"

The book doesnt teach the many different ways to pronounce each vowel in English (which is very important for a spanish speaker being that each spanish vowel has only one pronounciation). It doesn't emphasize the differences between:
a as in cap
a as in cape
e as in fed (the spanish "e")
e as in athlete (the spanish "i")
ee as in feed
i as in fit
i as in fight
o as in stop (the spanish "a")
o as in stove (the spanish "o")
o as in money
oo as in foot
oo as in spoon (the spanish "u")
u as in put
u as in puke

I would like to see a ESL program for spanish speakers that focuses on pronouncing as I have described.

5 out of 5 stars Perfecto!.......2007-01-11

I use this book with my Mexican boyfriend to better his SPOKEN English, and this book hits the nail right on the head. Although it's written by a "gringo", it is relatively free from grammar and translation mistakes. The style is good for the novice English learner and truly starts from one knowing NOTHING. The flow and progression of the book is more natural than some I have seen. We have finished the book twice and continue to use it for review and drills of vocabulary.

5 out of 5 stars Ingles para Latinos.......2007-01-09

Very helpful and clear. I have ordered 75 copies so far in the last 4 months--students find it clear and useful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful portrayal of a migrant family.......2007-02-16

I bought *Breaking Through* without realizing that it was a sequel to *The Circuit*. Nonetheless, you aren't lost if you start with *Breaking Through* I loved this memoir because it was one of the best portrayal of a migrant family.

This memoir chronicled the life of Francisco Jimenez from the time that him and his family entered America from Mexico to his entrance into college.

The Jimenez family saved up some money and entered into Mexico illegally. They were soon caught, after a time, and deported back. However, they were able to get papers and return. Despite living in the land of freedom and opportunities, the family has to work hard in order to survive. They worked in strawberry fields, lettuce patches and cleaned buildings.

Francisco is loving school yet struggled to stay on top as he also has to work. His older brother did well in school but worked nearly as much as their often-ill father did. The mother stayed home and took care of the children. However, she often substituted in their work when needed.

*Breaking Through* is a story of a family working together. It's also a story of one finding one's own identity in America. It's also a story of one trying to achieve the American dream.

You'll laugh. You'll cry. If you don't understand the Mexican culture, you'll find yourself puzzled at some things. Coming from a Hispanic family, I found myself nodding and taking strolls in memory lane.

Overall, it's easy reading for a great book.

Book Review on Breaking Through

Hi, this book Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez is a sad book. Why is it a sad book? A boy named Francisco struggles through life trying to keep his family together. He works and goes to school, also trying to keep his grades up. This book is a good book because of the Theme, believable charters, and a nice setting.

The theme is, heart breaking. It's heart breaking since a boy and his family have to face many difficult obstacles. The obstacles are not easy for Francisco and his family. They have to pay bills but they don't have any money. So the whole family except mom and the youngest ones have to work.

Besides the heart breaking theme there are nice believable charters. The charters sometimes where confused. They where confused because they didn't have money. No one to help them, and struggled to keep food on the table.

There also was a very good setting. The setting took place in many different places. Like school, fields, gas company, Twitchel and Twitchel. There are many different places. So that means that the family is all over the places.

So this book has a great theme. Wonderful setting that makes you feel like your there watching it all happing. Also nice believable charters that do things that you could relate to. So if you like heart breaking novels then this is the book for you.

"BREAKING THROUGH" BOOK REVIEW

The book is "Breaking Through" and the author is Francisco Jimenez. The main person in the book is the author. It is a true story. He has a mom, dad and brother. His brother's name is Roberto. I thought it would be a good book because the first sentence was "I lived in constant fear for ten long years."

You shouldn't read this book because there are a lot of Spanish words. The book is very long. It has 195 pages in the book. The Spanish words are very hard to read and you can't understand them.

The characters were papa, mama; Roberto and Francisco. They live on a farm or tent. Papa and mama are the mom and dad. Roberto is the brother. Francisco is the author and character in the book.

There are pictures of the author in the back of the book. The Jimenez's lived on a farm or tent. They grew up poor in America. They lived in a tent in America.

This book is very hard to read and it's long. The whole book is Francisco's life. I'd liked to sum up by saying I still don't like the book because I couldn't understand the words. In less you like reading Spanish you shouldn't read this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiring story for all readers.......2006-11-10

This is a wonderful book. It draws you into Francisco's life and really makes you think about how easy most of us had it as a child! A MUST READ!!

5 out of 5 stars Good Stories and Good Message.......2006-10-01

I bought this book after I'd read The Circuit because I needed to find out what happened to the family. I was intrigued by both books, found them fairly easy reading, and believe that they open up opportunities for discussion with teens. Thought provoking, well-written, very descriptive, somewhat depressing although I found the characters' spirit amazing and inspiring, and all together a very good read. Great for young adults as well as adults...highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing -- consider Jorge Posada's "Play Ball!" instead.......2007-06-08

After reading Jorge Posada's excellent children's book, "Play Ball!" at least a dozen times at my four-year-old son's request, I was excited to see "Out of the Ballpark" by Alex Rodriguez, one of the great players of our time.

Although other reviewers seem to love the book, my son can barely tolerate it and will pick any other baseball book before this one. He doesn't light up like he does with Posada's book, or any of his baseball books, for that matter.

His favorites are the amazing Casey At the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888 (Caldecott Honor Book), the entertaining Casey Back at Bat, the beautifully illustrated Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth and a book that features his favorite player, Dear Ichiro.

The story felt like it was trying too hard to me and never really developed the great rhythm good children's book authors seem to find. Take note: this is a fictional story loosely based on events in A-Rod's life...a fact that isn't revealed until you've completed the story. I probably wouldn't have purchased the book had I known it was fiction.

When it comes to children's books, Posada hit a homerun. A-Rod, well, I'll give him a bloop single...and I'm giving him that for picking a decent illustrator!

4 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2007-03-15

I find this a great book with some wonderful surpises inside for young boys and girls who are just getting into baseball. They can learn what it means to be part of team and it shows respect to one another. My grandson had a great time with it.

4 out of 5 stars Out of the Ballpark.......2007-03-10

Nicely written; very simply presented with good illustrations.

Children need to know the importance of long term goals and "practice makes perfect"...This story presents those values.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for children!!!!.......2007-03-10

I bought this book for my grandson and he loved reading it. Any book that can hold his attention is well written. Thank you so much for writing it.

Book Description

Michael Arroyo has a pitching arm that throws serious heat. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family's escape from Cuba, Michael's only family is his seventeen-yearold brother Carlos. If Social Services hears of their situation, they will be separated in the foster-care system—or worse, sent back to Cuba. Together, the boys carry on alone, dodging bills and anyone who asks too many questions. But then someone wonders how a twelve-year-old boy could possibly throw with as much power as Michael Arroyo throws. With no way to prove his age, no birth certificate, and no parent to fight for his cause, Michael's secret world is blown wide open, and he discovers that family can come from the most unexpected sources.

4 out of 5 stars Heat.......2007-10-16

The book Heat is about Michael Arroyo, a twelve-year-old boy, who loves to play baseball. The story takes place in the present day of the Bronx by Yankee Stadium. Michael lives with his older brother, Carlos. His mother died when he was a baby and his father died recently after they flew to their new home in New York from Cuba.
In the beginning of the story Michael sees a thief running from the police. The thief had just stolen a purse from his neighbor Mrs. Cora. Michael throws a baseball from homeplate to the center field fence, hits the thief in the back of the head, and knocks him out.

One day while playing catch with Manny, his best friend, he sees a girl behind the outfield fence. When he walks over to talk to her she runs away. He later finds out that her name is Ellie and she is the daughter of his baseball hero, El Grande.

The main conflict of the story is when the baseball coaches complain that Michael is too old to play Little League. So, the baseball commissioner bans Michael from playing Little League baseball. The only way that Michael could play baseball was if he could find a transcript of his birth certificate showing that he was twelve. Michael also has a difficult time with only Carlos and Mrs. Cora to take care of him. Carlos and Michael don't want to ask for help from Child Services because they are afraid they will be separated from each other.

Michael's team makes it to the championship game and in the last inning they are down by five runs. Michael turns around and sees El Grande, Ellie, Carlos, and some others walking toward him. Ellie gives him an envelope containing his birth certificate. Michael gets to come in and pitch the last inning of the game which was his dream. If the team wins they get to play in Yankee Stadium.

4 out of 5 stars Heat.......2007-10-09

Teaching fifth grade, I've discovered that boys do actually enjoy reading. Many love nonfiction books, some love fantasy books, but most enjoy sports books. The problem is that there are not a lot of good quality sports books written for boys this age. Thank goodness Mike Lupica came along because Heat is an all-around crowd-pleaser.

Twelve-year-old Michael Arroyo has been given a gift. Baseball is in his blood. He is a star among players his age. Without much money to his family name, baseball is all Michael has. It's all he knows. Living in the Bronx, in the shadow of Yankee Stadium, Michael has made a name for himself on the Little League diamond, too good of a name. While protecting an important family secret, Michael's age is questioned by his jealous opponents and with no way of proving it, Michael is forced to become a spectator of the only thing important to him.

"It's just a game." Children probably hear this all the time and I'm willing to bet the adults that say this don't remember exactly what it was like to be a kid. Often times to a child, it can be more than a game. To a child who's mother died while he was young, who's father recently passed away, and who's only sibling works night and day to barely pay the bills for the two of you to live in a dumpy one bedroom apartment in a country that you can't legally call your own, it's more than "just a game". It's a safe haven. The ball diamond is a place to escape to, and his teammates are his second family to escape with. And when you're as good as Michael Arroyo is, the baseball field can be a place where your dreams seem like they're not too far out of reach. Now imagine telling the boy that he can't even play because of a silly rule.

Oddly enough for a rousing sports adventure, most of the action in this book doesn't take place on a baseball diamond. As I said, this book is about so much more than baseball. Reading how Michael and his brother Carlos make it day to day living the way they do is exciting enough without the baseball thrown in. But the baseball diamond is where Michael is comfortable so it should come as no surprise that it is where Lupica feels at home as well. I actually found myself on the edge of my seat while reading a few of the ballgames unfold. While the dialogue between the characters is often times forced and unnatural, their comradery is very much believable, making you feel like one of the team.

Mike Lupica packs some powerful stuff into these pages, powerful things that stretch way beyond a baseball diamond. Michael is forced to deal with situations and handle situations that no boy his age should ever have to face. Michael does some fast growing up and is never able to just play the game he loves and truly enjoy playing it. Life isn't always fair though, and everytime it seems like it just might be, Lupica slams on the breaks and reminds us that it's not.

We've all seen the cheerful movies where the star player on a sports team faces some kind of tragedy, is forced to leave the team with the fear of never returning, and then miraculously shows up just in time for the championship game, leading the charge while taking his team to the promise land. We've seen these movies and read these books and at face value, Heat would appear to be one of those books but I promise you, it's not. Mike Lupica is so much better than that and this little baseball book, is about so much more than just baseball.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Baseball Adventure.......2007-10-06

My 10 year old son read this book. He isn't particularly fond of reading, so for him to say he loved a book and didn't want to put it down means it is a truly good book!!

2 out of 5 stars Heat.......2007-07-28

The author is trying to be a Tom Clancy type of author by taking a number of pages to explain one fact. The story line is good, when you can remember what it was. Should be more baseball action and less talk about the same subject.
My favorite books when I was growing up were the chip Hilton series, written be Clair Bee. They all had good story lines, but had one thing in common, they also talked sports. Mr Lupica gets away from this in all his books, whereas he could be the modern day Clair Bee if he so chose.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent YA Baseball Book.......2007-07-13

If you don't like books on baseball written for young adults, this book isn't for you. It does not transcend its nature. However, it is an excellent example of its kind and well worth your time if you like this kind of book at all.

The central character is well-drawn and sympathetic but his sidekick, his Catcher and pal is possibly even better and their interaction is funny also. Their is a love-interest but nothing innapropriate for kids that age happens and this romance may simply be the beginning of a long friendship, which would be no tragedy.

There are some very nicely done minor characters.

The narration is unobtrusive and fits the situation. The dialogue is not on the lines of adult conversation but it is mostly kids talking and is as it should be.

The baseball is fun and the story is worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Missing One Element.......2007-07-13

The book was very informative but I feel that it left out a key element.
In our area ( Dallas Texas) many of the Latino population perfers to buy a used mobile home that they ca get paid off as fast as possible. Being debt free is important to the Hispanics I've worked with. Many do not like to use banks and prefer to deal in cash. So financing can be challenging. Overall, a very good book.

I have been selling houses to Latino families 20 years. What I know, I found reflected in these pages and learned new details of Latino buying habits, family life and demographic distribution. Although the book aims to inform real estate and homebuilding professionals, it is really universal book about doing business with America's largest minority. Read this book, and you will never look at a Latin in the same way again, even if you are one. It's an eye opener that delights and occasionally drops your jaw as you realize the overwhelming impact of Latino growth on every aspect of business, politics and culture.

This is one of the best books my daughter has. The translation is perfect...my daughter loves it!!! The illustrations are excellent and she totally gets the point of the story which is not to be afraid of monsters because they are probably more afraid of her 8-)

1 out of 5 stars disappointing .......2007-05-11

I bought this online guided by the good reviews, but the book proved dissapointing. Though pictures are very good, the story of a boy that gets sent to bed for bad behavior and travels to an island where mosters live, and where he reigns as his king, has absolutely no soul nor magic. Story starts with the boy mother calling the boy "a monster". I know raising a boy is challenging, but I felt uneasy about that language from a mother to his son. In short, the very short story seems focused on the boy getting away with everything he does: no moral, no tenderness, no warmth. AND my kids found the pictures alluring but the book boring. I bought three books, read all of them to the kids and asked them to choose their favourites to keep, and this one was last.

Where the Wild Things Are was one of my very favorite books as a child. My nieces and nephew live in Mexico, so I bought this book for them. I cannot remember how many times I read it sitting on the couch with them in my lap. They loved it and I loved it. Very well translated and as always a joy to read.

Highly recommended!
