Book Description
Since the earliest days of the movies more than a century ago, moviemakers have been intrigued by "the greatest story ever told." They have tried, with varying degrees of success, to capture the life of Jesus on film.
In Jesus at the Movies Barnes Tatum has created a fascinating and exhaustively-researched viewer's guide to the movies about Jesus. Tatum guides the reader film-by-film from Sidney Olcott's silent classic "From the Manger to the Cross" through Denis Arcand's award-winning "Jesus of Montreal" to the future of Jesus movies. With his experience as author, biblical scholar, and teacher on religion and film, he presents this unique look at Jesus films in all dimensions: as cinematic art, as literature, as biblical history and as theology.

A comparison of plot dynamics in different films.......2002-08-09
Jesus At The Movies: A Guide To The First Hundred Years by W. Barnes Tatum is a comprehensive guide to virtually all the major Hollywood films made about Jesus Christ to date. The films range from such silent era epics as Sidney Olcott's From The Manger To The Cross and D.W. Griffith's Intolerance, to Norman Jewison's Jesus Christ Superstar and David Greene's Godspell. From the seven last sayings attributed to Christ on the cross, to the story of Jesus from a Judaic as well as Christian perspective, to a comparison of plot dynamics in different films, Jesus At The Movies is a thoroughly researched, heavily annotated, broad-ranging and exhaustive guide, analysis, and review. Enhanced with a selected bibliography, filmography, and an index, Jesus At The Movies is a seminal, invaluable reference work for students of film history in general, and the movie representations of the story and person of Jesus Christ in particular.
The film Jesus explored.......2000-10-25
A fascinating look at how Jesus has been portrayed in the movies. I have seen (and own) several of the movies reviewed. I didn't figure I needed another "Jesus flick". However, the discussion on several of these films has caused me to go looking for them. The changes in how (and who gets to) portray Jesus over the years is intriguing - and it is easy enough to read that I wasn't intimidated. I plan on using this book as a starting point in a Lenten discussion where we will watch several of these films.

Idiosyncratic!.......2005-10-27
The writer, in his own view, depicts how art is used through ages to portray the sociological, philosophical, political and economical trends of those particular ages. However, the author fails to see how also art is used in a mercantilist way, without a single clue to express the trendy message of the time, but to become the next big-new thing in the market. Finally, the author sees to much into art to look for reasons and reactions to socio-economic trends here in the US and the world, while in the mind of many artist, their aim to produce a piece that will produce a more comfortable and secure financial present and why not future, is not addressed in this book! I have to add, the research on every artist and piece of art addressed here is thoroughly done, accurate and very well documented. My two stars are actually for his research but not the theme of the book.
What's the point?.......2001-08-20
He says that "we seem to be at the end of a long experiment..." This book is a collection of ridiculous historical observations with an astonishing lack of depth from a constitutional lawyer, and the author rolls over every possible historical event like a steamroller. The book presents itself as history, but it's really the author lamenting the loss of Christian values and how technology has been bad for society. Strange.
A moving synthesis of art, politics, and philosophy . . ........2001-06-13
Constitutional lawyer John Whitehead displays a flexible intellect as he explores the intellectual and social movements in art, music, film, literature, politics, and philosophy over the past century. The book is extremely readable and provides an interesting way to survey vast amounts of accumulated thought. Readers will be hard pressed to reconcile the fact that Paula Jones' attorney and the writer of this book are the same man.

The Absolute Best Book Ever.......2003-05-14
This is an awesome book for any 2-3 year old, big sibling. The poor mother's haggard face is a sight to behold. My daughter loved it...especially the end where she came to realize that it is her duty to teach everything she knows to her baby brother. My daughter is now 4 and still likes to have this one read to her.
Awesome sibbling book!.......2002-05-20
I love this book for my 3-year old daughter. I purchased this book when she was just beginning to walk and talk because the story and illustrations were amazingly true to life. I believe this book helped my daughter see her own potential as she was learning to walk, stomp her feet, and eat spaghetti. Great up-beat rhythm that is fun for both of us. For our next baby, I plan to keep reading this book so my daughter understands that she will be the "big sister" one day. "Hey, Little Baby!" is one book that is very much a part of our lives. Highly recommend this book and often share it as a great, sibbling book with friends.
An Adorable Book.......2000-08-25
Very rarely a book comes along that a parent doesn't mind reading over and over again! My 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son both love this book. The illustrations are so incredibly cute...my daughter loves pointing out all the details in the pictures...the cat being her favorite character. It's easy for me to relate to the expressions of the mother, and the story sums up the life and antics of an older sibling to a T. We got this for our daugher shortly before our son was born and she's yet to tire of it. I'd definitely recommend purchasing this book.
GREAT BOOK.......2000-08-01
This book was excellent. My Daughter loves it and loves to hear it over and over - it reminds her that being a baby isn't much fun since they don't do much and she can do so much that she wouldn't want to go back to being a baby but she'd love to show them and teach them as they grow up. I recommend this book to anyone thinking about a second child or even to anyone who's little one wants to remain a baby instead of growing up into a toddler.
Great for closely-spaced siblings!.......2000-04-04
My three-year old recently received this book and "reads" it to her baby brother. She loves the concept of being able to teach him things. And we all love the illustrations! The drawings of the mother trying to get everything done around the house while also enjoying the kids are priceless. And the story is fun!

Do *Your* Kids Know the Stay-Safe Rules?.......2006-12-15
"Don't Talk to Strangers, Pooh!" is part of the "My Very First Winnie the Pooh" series, which also includes "Roo's New Baby-Sitter" and "Tigger's Moving Day," among others.
In this book, Winnie the Pooh learns that his good friend Christopher Robin is going to his Grandma's house for supper all on his own. Pooh and Piglet are worried about him being all by himself, but Christopher Robin tells them that it isn't so scary if you know what to do to stay safe. He gives them a set of rules to follow and they put them to good use later on. Christopher Robin is very impressed with how well they learned them.
Christopher Robin's rules include "Don't talk to strangers" and "Never take a ride with a stranger" among others. They're all included on the last page at the very back of the book. At this time, or any time, it is always important for kids to know what to do to stay safe when it comes to strangers, but to also know that they can be safe with their friends. These favorite characters, Pooh, Christopher Robin and all their friends can help them to learn just what to do.
Non-threatening way to teach caution about strangers........2000-09-13
This book was wonderful. Talking to children about strangers can be difficult. You want them to be cautious but don't want to frighten them. How do you tell them that not all strangers are bad and still warn them that some are dangerous? Get this book - it is a great, non-threatening way to teach your children to be wary of strangers. Christopher Robin explains to Pooh & Piglet that most strangers are nice but some aren't. Since you can't tell which are which, you never talk to any strangers. The best point, I thought, was how Christopher Robin explained that strangers are not people who looked strange but are people you don't know. That's a hard point to get across to kids. At the end, is a list of "Christopher Robin's Stay Safe Rules." I plan on buying a copy of this book for everyone I know who has kids, that's how great I think it is.

Book Description
n this concise and penetrating study, Roger Barnett illuminates the effect of operational, organizational, legal, and moral constraints on the ability of the U.S. to use military force. As the tragic events of September 11 demonstrated, potential adversaries can take advantage of these limitations, thus spawning "asymmetrical warfare." Barnett defines asymmetrical warfare as not simply a case of pitting one's strength against another's weakness but rather of taking the calculated risk to exploit an adversary's inability or unwillingness to prevent, or defend against, certain actions. For instance, launching chemical, biological, or suicide attacks; taking indiscriminate actions against critical infrastructure; using hostages or human shields; deliberately destroying the environment; and targeting noncombatants all constitute possible asymmetrical warfare scenarios. Against these acts, the U.S. has not prepared any response in kind. Indeed it either cannot or will not undertake such responses, thus making these attacks especially difficult to counter. This refusal to retaliate in an "eye for an eye" fashion complicates the dilemma of American policymakers who seek to wield power and influence on the world stage while simultaneously projecting a peaceful and benign image. Barnett concludes that the U.S. must create a formal system of selectively eliminating the constraints that dictate our response to certain situations or scenarios. Failure to make such changes will only increase paralysis and, when the use of force is required, contribute to the already heightened risks.
Customer Reviews:
response.......2006-08-28
The first reviewer despite his technical expertise may have missed the point, this is use of current skills and inventory against those who employ asymmetical warfare methods. It is a mindset for dealing with such tactics and utilization of our ready resources. I found it informative and useful and wish more policy makers would read it.
Re Unfettered Conventional Violence, NOT Asymmetric Warfare.......2003-07-06
There is nothing objectionable about this thoughtful and well-documented book except its title. It is simply not about "asymmetric warfare" as Ralph Peters, G.I. Wilson, Bill Lind or any of a dozen other authors including myself might speak. This book provides a reasoned and respectable argument against limiting in any way the degree to which strategic nuclear and conventional forces might be utilized. The author systematically discusses operational, legal, and moral constraints that, if permitted to stand, could in effect give a challenger relying on asymmetric means something of an advantage.
The book does not, however, consider for a moment that our existing heavy metal military is anything other than the ideal blunt instrument with which to wreak our will. It does not discuss asymmetric challenges as a range, it does not evaluate the effectiveness or ineffectiveness (whether operationally, or in terms of cost and sustainability) of varying alternatives for dealing with asymmetric challenges (e.g. soft power including covert action), and therefore the book should more aptly have been titled "The Curtis Lemay Handbook for Squishing Mosquitoes with Multiple Nuclear Bombs" or even better, "Don Rumsfeld's Press Briefing on Why B-2 Bombers Were Called in Against 18 Taliban Guerrillas in Afghanistan."
Asymmetric warfare, this is not...

Book Description
In Fighting Firewater Fictions, Richard W. Thatcher describes and explains the emergence and perpetuation of the 'firewater complex' - the cultural construct of an informally sanctioned, destructive, binge-drinking norm in First Nations reserve communities.
The complex has reified alcoholism as an inevitability in the First Nations - an approach that has resulted in essential aspects of collective and personal responsibility being vacated in favour of therapeutic interventions assisted by social personnel of questionable expertise. This substitution has had the effect of relieving government policy-makers and reserve leadership from accountability for problematic community development strategies that have long since outgrown their support capacities.
Thatcher argues that the conditions that give rise to extraordinary alcohol abuse rates in First Nations are largely traceable to the hopelessness associated with multi-generational unemployment. Fighting Firewater Fictions calls for community re-organization around a band development policy that looks beyond the reserve, and outlines a strategy that shifts the current, exclusive emphasis on the needs of alcoholics towards the neglected counselling and non-residential service needs of potential or actual binge-drinkers. This is essential reading for anybody working in, or seeking to understand, aboriginal communities that are experiencing problems with alcoholism.

Worst book I have ever read.......2006-04-08
Period. The author may be good in this field or research, but he definitely needs to improve his english language-Is he a native english speaker? Long long sentence, awkward structure, poorly chose words only leave reader in confusion.
Above the field.......2005-09-12
I have taught a design course using Montgomery's text and found it tiring. A more appropriate title to that book would be "Experimental Design for Industrial Engineers," as the overwhelming majority of examples and exercises were of the I.E. persuasion. For a class of Statistics majors, the text was very difficult to motivate. Many students stopped using it and just relied on lecture notes.
After the myriad of complaints, I spent Spring Break searching for a better book. A colleague recommended Oehlert's text. Chapter 2 on randomization methods was a perfect foray into the Normal-theoretic ANOVA, which is incredibly well-developed in Chapter 3. Theoretical arguments are juxtaposed with solid examples in what can best be described as an expository triumph. Chapter 6 on checking assumptions should technically come next (and I cover next it in my course), followed by contrasts in Chapter 4 and multiple comparisons in Chapter 5. The author does a very good job avoiding the "cookbook" approach to multiple comparisons so often seen in other texts. Chapter 7 on power analysis and sample size determination is one of the best I have read, even though most instructors omit this topic. A stylistic split comes thereafter: go to blocking designs or factorial treatment structures? I followed the author's lead, but one could go either way. Chapter 11 introduces random-effect models, with Chapter 12 building off of that with mixed-effects models and nesting. One of this book's strongest features is in Chapter 12: Hasse diagrams for deriving expected mean squares. Chapter 13 introduces variance reduction through blocking, though more detailed examples are needed. This is as far as I was able to get in one semester. I had planned on covering Chapter 14 on incomplete block designs, which upon my initial reading also seemed to lack detailed examples.
In terms of software emphasis, the author clearly prefers a package from his university. It is freely downloadable, but requires the learning of new syntax. For my class, I offered both R and SAS demonstrations as a supplement to the text, with researchers preferring the former and practitioners preferring the latter. Some students relied on SPSS.
After Spring Break, I referred my class to this book. My summer course then used this book as the required text, and it seemed to be very well-received. As far as I know, it is still being used now.
My favorite design book.......2004-01-29
I have taught from this text at the senior/applied masters level three times, and my enthusiasm increases as time goes on. Students generally share my favorable opinion. I have also taught using other texts (incuding Montgomery), and this one is my current favorite.
Oehlert takes design seriously, not just the analysis of experiments. He is obviously an experienced statistician with deep knowledge of both practice and theory. As a bonus, he writes well and uses excellent real examples.
Aspects of the text that stand out as different from other texts include:
1. A detailed explanation of different error rates for multiple comparisons. More detail is present than is useful for a beginning student, but the exposition is excellent as a reference for those who need it.
2. An unusually well-informed (and practical) discussion of assumptions.
3. Discussion of SAS Type II errors. Common practice is not always the most sensible, and the author's advocacy of the Type II approach for many problems is compelling.
4. A good discussion of mixed model assumptions (restricted and unrestricted models). I have not seen a comparable exposition of this potentially confusing issue.
5. The use of Hasse diagrams for mixed models. I had not worked with Hasse diagrams before I used this text, but find them to be useful tools for analysis of complex designs.
My only quibble is that some items in chapter 13 could be introduced earlier....although probably not fully covered. In particular, RCBDs without interactions could appear (with appropriate caveats) along with factorial designs. I confess some ambivalence on this issue, noting that I only quarrel because I am starting to get rushed for time by chapter 13.
If you want a cookbook, go elsewhere. If you want a highly mathematical approach, this is also not for you. For a serious treatment of real statistical issues, however, both analysis and design, I doubt if you can do much better.
One of the few truly modern MS level texts.......2004-01-11
Unlike the market-leaders that are showing their age, this book takes a modern point of view of experimental design, not excessively tilted towards industrial settings. It's also the only book showing how to use Hasse diagrams to find expected mean squares, which is by far the easiest way. The book also pays considerable attention to the design, not just the analysis, of experiments. It emphasizes practical, rather than mathematical, depth and insight. It's terrific.
Not very good.......2003-04-16
We are using this book for a Masters level graduate course in Experimental Design. The book is poorly written. It seems like it is basically a compilation of lecture notes. I would use Montgomery over this text. Even our professor admits that it is useless to study from.
The plus points are that it covers certain things that other text books don't (Error Rates, SNK, etc.). These are only covered minimally, though, and don't make up for the poor coverage of most of the other subjects in the book.

Book Description
How much do children's early experiences affect their cognitive and social development? How important is the parent's role in child development? Is it possible to ameliorate or reverse the consequences of early developmental deficits? This vitally important book draws on the latest research from the social sciences and studies on the brain to answer these questions and to explore what they mean for social policy and child and family development.
The authors affirm that sound social policy providing for safe and appropriate early care, education, health care, and parent support is critical not only for the optimal development of children, but also for strengthening families, communities, and the nation as a whole. Offering a wealth of advice and recommendations, they explain:
-- the benefits of family leave, child care, and home visitation programs;
-- the damage that child abuse inflicts;
-- the vital importance of nutrition (and breast feeding) for pregnant women and young children;
-- the adverse effects that occur in misguided efforts to disseminate research too early;
-- and more.
Written by experts in the field of early child development, care, and education, the book is essential reading for parents and policymakers alike.

Book Description
This volume presents the proceedings of the First International Conference on Applications of Databases, ADB-94, held at Vadstena, Sweden in June 1994. ADB-94 provided a unique platform for the discussion of innovative applications of databases among database researchers, developers and application designers. The 28 refereed papers were carefully selected from more than 100 submissions. They report on DB applications, for example in air traffic, modelling, maps, environment, finance, engineering, electronic publishing, and digital libraries, and they are devoted to advanced database services, as for example image text and multimedia modelling, fuzzy set based querying, knowledge management, heterogeneous multidatabase management, and intelligent networks.
