Basic Reliability: An introduction to Reliability Engineering

Book Description
Today's marketplace demands product reliability. At the same time, it places ever-increasing demands on products that push the limits of their performance and their functional life, and it does so with the expectation of lower per-unit product costs. To meet these demands, product design now requires a focused, streamlined, concurrent engineering process that will produce a product at the lowest possible cost in the least amount of time. Design for Reliability provides a systematic approach to the design process that is sharply focused on reliability and firmly based on the physics of failure. It imparts an understanding of how, why, and when to use the wide variety of reliability engineering tools available and offers fundamental insight into the total design cycle. Applicable from the idea phase of the product development cycle through product obsolescence, Design for Reliability (DfR) concepts integrated with reliability verification and analytical physics form a coherent stage gate/phase design process that helps ensure that a product will meet customers' reliability objectives. Whether you are a high-volume manufacturer of consumer items or a low volume producer of military commodities, your goal is the same: to bring a product to market using a process focused on designing out or mitigating potential failure modes prior to production release. Readers of Design for Reliability will learn to meet that goal and move beyond solidifying a basic offering to the marketplace to creating a true competitive advantage.
Customer Reviews:
Very practical for commercial products.......2001-07-12
This book is definitely a strong addition to the body of knowledge for Reliability Professionals and for any Company that wants to improve the business competitiveness by improving the product reliability.
The book clearly provides the correct focus on the customer, but it also elaborates on the fact that one customer is the corporate business enterprise.
The book shows the optimum sequence of DfR activities in the development phases. This book also has impressive details for the specific DfR elements. It is also an excellent resource for guidance into specific details.
I like the balance of graphics with text and the graphics added excellent additional understanding.
This is an outstanding Industry leader that has documented the implemented practice in this book.
I did not attempt to verify every mathematical formula.
Technical Content From Author.......2001-05-12
As one of the authors/editors of this book, let me describe the valuable technical content. First, let me impress upon you that this is a rare practical work in reliability written by members of a highly technical company that apply reliability science every day to products. Thus, academics are stressed only as a tool. Therefore, this book has something for everyone. It starts off with a management perspective on how to organize a reliability program. Chapter 1 - 5 overview a unique stage-gate approach to growing reliability. What tools and building blocks are needed from a management perspective to be world-class. What tests to perform when is also key. This approach assures optimum reliability grow in a commercial atmosphere of on-time reliable product deliveries. The book then evolves technically providing essential engineering topics. Chapter 6 describes key information for performing process reliability studies. Chapter 7, is without question a compact chapter on failure analysis that describes each analysis tool including SEM, SAM, EDS, FTIR, FIB, SIMS, etc. The numerous physics of failure analysis examples in diffusion, corrosion, intermetallics, ESD etc are illustrated with detailed FA images. Then Chapter 8 provides what you need to know for reliability statistics. It covers basic definitions for failure rate, CDF, PDF, the main distributions used (Weibull, lognormal, Exponential, Normal). A well-organized chapter presenting key essential reliability statistics needed in industry. Chapter 9 details accelerated testing, the primary historical equations governing temperature, temperature-humidity, vibration and temperature cycle/shock, and electromigration. It provides common sense guidelines for assessing overstressing. How to use these equations for test planning. Advance topics including Step-stress and how to describe life distributions as a function of stress. Chapter 10 on Accelerated Reliability Growth is fairly unique. What tests do you perform and when, using stage-gate and recent accelerated reliability growth mathematics for planning. Growth can be obtained and assessed in a timely manner. Chapter 11 provides the essential for system reliability. Series, parallel, and n of k subsystems as well as predicting reliability using both Bellcore, and 217 methods are addressed. Chapter 12 is an excellent overview of FMEA. Chapter 13 teaches methods for evaluating product risk and conducting risk program management. Lastly, Chapter 14 is an advanced topic, thermodynamic reliability engineering. No other book teaches thermodynamics and how the 1st and 2nd laws are fundamental to the science for Physics-of-Failure. In no other book can a reader find derivations for accelerated testing time compression expressions in fatigue, temperature-humidity, Miner's rule, and diffusion. Additionally, an advanced Arrhenius kinetic topics on logarithmic-in-time aging are provided. This topic as a seminar received the highest ratings at the 2001 RAMS conference. Thank You - Alec Feinberg.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-08-13
This book arrived in excellent condition. The book is easy to read with great examples.
Active Training.......2006-11-10
This book is an excellent supplement for teaching employee training and development as a course. I'd recommend combining it with Noe's text (Employee Training and Development) for a college or graduate level course on this subject. The book is also a good stand-alone reference for teaching aspects of active training to a firm's curriculum development staff.
Activate Your Training.......2006-10-07
Mel Silberman is the master of active training. Just skimming his book gave me a handful of new ideas I applied to my training. Reading the book helped me to revamp my training courses to include many more participatory training exercises.
Everybody loves being involved, talking, interacting, and exploring during training. Lecture, however, is too often the default methodology. In some ways lecture takes less time to prepare and is less risky, but is it more effective learning? In this day and age, linear, slow, from-up-front training just isn't effective. Instead, shift over to active training that engages and empowers participants to learn rather than be taught. I'm reminded of Winston Churchill when he said, "I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught."
Silberman gives idea after idea of how to spice up lectures, or better yet, replace them with other a dozen other learning methods that actively involve the participant. The 100+ exercises and examples in Active Training makes it easy to incorporate non-cheesy learning activities that really work.
Wake up your participants! Get active.
Wow!.......2003-03-01
Great book with plenty of practical comments and ideas which allow you to design a truly active session that both, your audience and you, will enjoy.
The best book in training i have read since i am training.......1999-11-03
I have pleasant meetings with you book Active Training at the last weeks. I am very impressed from it. The book is the best book that has been written about active teaching and learning. The book taught me new active ways as well. The book could help you diagnosis your faults at training and remind you what you forget to do. The book is very friendly. Active Training make it clear that you can be the best trainer if you just work for it. "Active leaning" might hurts but it helps you to grow. I am very grateful about the adventures. The book function like a mirror that tell you where your lipstick is not polished , so you can correct it. The book gave me new insights even I am teaching for 10 years already . The book is like a mentor If you like you can give your hands and travel at a virtual exelent training class.

Customer Reviews:
A fine, comprehensive textbook on real-time systems.......2006-09-21
This is a fine, comprehensive textbook for real-time systems. It covers many aspects of real-time systems in an even, consistent way. For basic, foundational knowledge, Laplante's book in its third edition is probably the finest that I have encountered.
The book is foundational and gives a good overview of concepts important to real-time systems. Don't expect to find the latest "fads" in programming or interesting "tricks of the trade" in the book; that is not the purpose of his book. I use the book to confirm and review basic concepts when developing real-time concepts.
I have 24 years experience in developing various real-time systems: medical devices, military equipment, and spacecraft instruments. I also lecture and write about real-time systems; Laplante's book is a necessary part of my library of real-time books.
A comprehensive treatment, yet written from a practical perspective.......2006-02-13
As you might imagine from any IEEE Press text, the treatment is practical yet comprehensive. The writing is clear and the author makes extensive use of diagrams wherever applicable. The author also does an excellent job describing RTOS architecture and feature utility depending on the scale of the system, which is a rare find in other books on the subject.
Although the text is not as heavily mathematical as some of the other texts, the author does present analytical techniques as needed, so the book is perfectly useful for system performance analysis. The book is very straigthforward to read and apply, so I would higly recommend this text to students both practitioners. In fact, the information is so accessible that I would go so far to say that it belongs on the bookshelf of anyone that works with real-time embedded systems, even at the academic level.

Customer Reviews:
Old book for Linux 7 Admin.......2002-10-02
Although it is claimed that this 2nd edition has been updated for RH Linux v7.0 from v6.2, it doesn't show any updates using the GUI admin improvements included with RH Linux 7.0. The limits of GUI is Xwindows using Xfree86, tacked on in Chap 14.
Most of the install processes are the typical woefully inadequate, glossed-over, dated procedures for v6 through a command line. No showing of a typical server installation which is the main subject of book, but then the author has another book for Server 7, 0-7645-4786-0
There is no showing of the version of LinuxConf working under Gnome or KDE, what is in the book is text version of LinuxConf v1.19
Most of the rest of the book is CLI based commands for admin tasks includes network, dns, email, ftp, apache, and nfs. The Appendix has a 77 pg common command reference.
Outstand Linux Resource!!!.......2001-09-24
I was new to Linux and had bought several books for reference. This is by far the book I used most. Kabir took me step by step in setting up my own Linux server in my home. I now have a Linix server acting as a Windows Domain, and am getting ready to deploy a Samba server for a client in order to avoid the costs associated with Windows software. He is exceptional in explaining how to get you up and going in practically all the services offered on a server. Good job Kabir!
Excellent intro to Red Hat Linux.......2001-09-03
I've found this book to be a great introduction to Red Hat Linux. I've been using Linux on and off for the last few years, but I've only ever had a superficial understanding of it. This book was very useful in helping me figure out what's going on with Red Hat 7, including specifics on the boot sequence. The book also has good introductory chapters on Samba and Apache; enough to get you started at least.
Intermediate to Advanced / Solid Book.......2001-08-31
If your running RH7 or you already know how to move around and edit files in linux, this will be a good book.
However, I have determined that it is impossible to have "the know all" book on linux admin. The subject is just too large for one book. This book will come in useful for its purpose, administering a RH server. But to cover it all you must buy other books like The UNIX System Administration Handbook, A good Sendmail book, a good Apache Server book (I don't recommend O'Reilly's Definite Guide). You will also need a good Linux security book and some sort of command line reference book like O'Reilly's "Linux in a Nutshell".
If you are a beginner, you will need this book and eventually all the others I have mentioned, but you MUST have another book to help you along. If Coriolis ever publishes an up to date RH7 version of "Setting Up a Linux Internet Server Visual Black Book", then it would make a great pair. Even the old version of the Visual Black Book will still help the beginner just fine but it's always good to have the latest.
Linux is free but learning it will cost you. Go ahead and get the book then go get all the other books.
Quick and to the Point.......2001-07-09
I was upgrading an older Red Hat installation to 7.1 and needed some quick and directed guidance to configuration files whose locations and formats have changed. This is the only book I found that spent it's time doing that and didn't waste the first 400 pages on "Why Linux is good and what this whole open source thing is about."
An unusually high signal to noise ratio.

The Circuit Designer's Companion, Second Edition
ASIN: 0780353765 |
Book Description
"Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is an engineering discipline often identified as black magic. This belief exists because the fundamental mechanisms on how radio frequency (RF) energy is developed within a printed circuit board (PCB) is not well understood by practicing engineers. Rigorous mathematical analysis is not required to design a PCB. Using basic EMC theory and converting complex concepts into simple analogies helps engineers understand the mitigation process that deters EMC events from occurring.
This user-friendly reference covers a broad spectrum of information never before published, and is as fluid and comprehensive as the first edition. The simplified approach to PCB design and layout is based on real-life experience, training, and knowledge. Printed Circuit Board Techniques for EMC Compliance, Second Edition will help prevent the emission or reception of unwanted RF energy generated by components and interconnects, thus achieving acceptable levels of EMC for electrical equipment. It prepares one for complying with stringent domestic and international regulatory requirements. Also, it teaches how to solve complex problems with a minimal amount of theory and math. Essential topics discussed include:
- Introduction to EMC
- Interconnects and I/O
- PCB basics
- Electrostatic discharge protection
- Bypassing and decoupling
- Backplanes-Ribbon Cables-Daughter Cards
- Clock Circuits-Trace Routing-Terminations
- Miscellaneous design techniques
This rules-driven bookformatted for quick access and cross-referenceis ideal for electrical and EMC engineers, consultants, technicians, and PCB designers regardless of experience or educational background."

Terrible book.......2004-07-06
This book looks perfect on paper. The subject matter is important, it talks about many practical concepts, the cover is cute, etc. But trying to read this book I was very disappointed. The author has just cut and pasted some well-known ideas but doesn't explain anything clearly. Despite knowing the subject I found it painful to follow. I wanted to throw the book away after reading a few sections, but I kept telling myself "it can't be that bad, the material is fine, let me give it another chance". But the book is that bad! It is no excuse that this is a "handbook". There are many books that are not textbooks that do a great job explaining things. I feel sorry for anybody who is trying to learn by reading this book. If you are a beginner read Howard Johnson's classic "Black Magic" book. If you are more advanced read Clayton Paul or books on Microwave design.
I donated my book to the city library, but I was very tempted to throw it away to save somebody else from struggling with it.
OK, but missing something.......2003-10-29
So far it has been useful in my designs. They seem to be better and I am sure the book has helped with certification. It has some very useful information. Unfortunatly, it does not have much supporting information or theoretical proofs. Perhaps this helps the non-math oriented user, but I can't imagine why a non-math oriented user would need such a book or what such a person would be doing designing for EMC. As an engineer, I don't take things on face value without understanding of why. The lack of general theory also makes it difficult to extend the information provided to areas not covered in the book. In short, I'd like to know a bit more about why.
good for a lot of EMC/EMI pains.......2001-07-30
I got this book because the boss said to find something to help resolve the FCC/CE and other world EMI/EMC compliance issues we have, and it was instantly used and had the answers we needed.
It covers power and grounds, signal integrity, and used with Howard Johnson's book (High Speed Digital Design), gives a strong insight to the PC board layout issues of high speed digital and analog electronics.

Not A Must Own, But A Good Book.......2000-06-01
Today, product performance requirements and environmental concerns force designers and productassemblers to become more aware and involved in electronic packaging and interconnect decisions than ever before. Product performance requirements spiral from the effects of increasing operating speed, decreasing package size, lowering cost, and reducing time to market. These spiraling requirements decrease the emphasis on traditional component packaging, raise new component packaging and handling issues, and place more responsibility for packaging on the assembler, all the while increasing component and product complexity. Environmental concerns drive new requirements for cleaning, interconnection, and reclaiming and conserving resources; and political responses to issues, previously beyond the scope of influence on engineers and scientists.
Maybe addressing all of those issues is too much to expect of one book, but Charles Harper comes close in the latest (3rd) edition of Electronic Packaging and Interconnection Handbook. While many books have a narrower focus, few books in electronics cover the breadth of topics in Harper's Handbook. Major sections are: Fundamental Technologies, Interconnection Technology, and System Packaging Technology. The section on Fundamental Technologies has chapters on Materials For Electronic Packaging, Thermal Management, Thermal And Mechanical Stress Behavior In Electronic Packaging, Connectors And Interconnection Technology, Wiring And Cabling, and Solder Technologies For Electronic Packaging And Assembly. The next section, Interconnection Technology, includes chapters on Packaging And Interconnection Of Integrated Circuit Packaging, Surface Mount Technologies, Hybrid Microelectronics And Multichip Modules, Chip Scale Packaging And Direct Chip Attach Technologies, and Rigid And Flexible Printed Wiring Boards
Mr. Harper wrote this book to aid in the practice of implementing electronic designs into products. In Harper's multi-disciplined approach to describing electronic packing and interconnect, he calls on 19 recognized specialists from industry and academia to make sense of this complicated, interdisciplinary field. It is a unique collection of key data, facts, practical guidance, and circuit and package design basics. The book covers the practice of electronics packaging from the fundamentals to new technologies. It can be read, understood, and used by design, quality, and manufacturing engineers to build a foundation of practical knowledge of topics and without a need for complex analysis. It's a good starting point to learn about an unfamiliar topic, because the book provides information on wide range of topics that are just beyond the range of the familiar areas of one's day-to-activities, regardless of one's field of endeavor.
Another point of comparison is another handbook. From a breadth of coverage, clarity of purpose, discipline, and execution; Juran's Quality Control Handbook has to be the bench mark for evaluating for all other handbooks. From that perspective, Harper falls short. Admittedly, Juran has a thirty year and two edition head-start, but it is better organized and written, tightly edited, and has overcome Harper's single biggest shortcoming, an index of limited utility.
The Electronic Packaging and Interconnection Handbook is a good book, covering a broad range of topics that will fill-in the gaps of knowledge between other books on your book shelf.
A Professional writes a professional book.......2000-05-31
I know Mr. Harper is well-known in electronic packaging field. His presentations have been read and studied in China. I think this book must be a best-seller in electronic packaging world. I wish I could buy one if it is possible in China.

Book Description
Weblogs--frequently updated, independently produced, and curiously addictive--have become some of the most popular sites on the Web today. The Weblog Handbook is the first book to explain how weblogs work and explore their impact on the media landscape.
There is no formula for creating a superb weblog--but there are lessons to be drawn from maintaining one. In The Weblog Handbook, Rebecca Blood draws on her experience as an early participant in the weblog community to share what she has learned in three years of "living online."
With a clear and engaging voice, Rebecca explains how to choose among the available tools, even walking the beginner through the process of creating their first weblog. Along the way she answers commonly asked questions concerning weblog etiquette, how to attract readers, and the qualities that make a weblog stand out, alerting the novice to considerations--and pitfalls--they didn't know to ask about.
For students of digital culture, The Weblog Handbook provides an account of the history of the movement, an explanation of the "weblog method", and a thoughtful examination of weblogs and journalism.
Finally, Rebecca examines how the weblog community has grown and changed, the dangers confronting it, and the ways in which weblogs are affecting and affected by both online and offline culture.
Customer Reviews:
decent and wise counsel.......2007-02-25
Rebecca Blood loves her craft.
In a world moving as fast as the cyberworld is, a book written in 2002 and reviewed now in 2007 is bound to show its age. The Weblog Handbook does so.
Yet for sheer, innocent (but not inexpert), joyful description of a weblog community that discovered itself almost accidentally between 1999 and 2002, this delightful little book is both a period piece and a still-useful introduction to weblogging for novices.
Seven well-written chapters make the experience of reading this old-media production (ironies abound) a pleasure.
'What is a Weblog?' (chapter one, pp. 1-25) does what its title makes obvious. Along the way, the author utilizes her impeccably accessible prose to highlight the serendipitous, communal, and artistic-creative aspects of most blogs, or at least of those that set the movement afoot.
Blood's second chapter (her generous first-person style makes a reviewer who has never met her refer to her simply as 'Rebecca'; 'Why a Weblog?', pp. 27-37) dispenses wisdom regarding how the beast can take over the life of the beast-er. She indicates three motives for blogging: 'information sharing, reputation building, and personal expression', with careful attention to what the practice does for the writer as well as for the reader. The secret is to align what one already does with one's life as Daily Chronicler of Something.
Chapter three ('Creating and Maintaining Your Weblog', pp. 39-57) puts the 'p' in the first word of the author's subtitle. A newbie in the field will appreciate the absence of condescension as Blood introduces him to the nuts and bolts of his new hobby.
Every successful artist or otherwise public persona experiences that memorable moment when she understands who she is in her given role and why that is a natural place to be. According to Rebecca Blood, bloggers are no different (Chapter four, 'Finding Your Voice', pp. 59-76). Though she gives due attention to the blogger-audience dynamic from several angles, she is very much aware that a blogger who wants her craft to be an integral aspect of her life finds her voice (including the topic upon which she can write knowledgeably) and sticks with it.
Rebecca concludes 'Finding an Audience' (chapter five, pp. 77-99) with this judicious and provocative statement: 'If your objective in keeping a weblog is to gain a wide audience, I advise you to quite today. Webloggers who care about the size of their audience are always unhappy.'
By the time she has worked her way to that declaration, however, she has provided twenty pages of helpful guidance to, well, finding and building an audience. One gains the impression that here is a woman of balance, willing to help you do the thing you want to do but aware that it may turn out to be something other than that. Kudos to her for writing a professional manual that takes itself with appropriate levity.
Blood utilizes her sixth chapter to blend garden-variety journalistic ethics and etiquette with the peculiar idealism of the early weblogging community (chapter six, 'Weblog Community and Etiquette', pp. 101-125). Though she breaks her counsel into 'do not do' and 'do' categories, her approach is not rigid. Rather it is altruistic, idealistic, and communal. Even if those traits do not guarantee a better world, they are better than their alternatives. Blood capably guides the novice through the unspoken expectations that linger like minefields before the new weblogger who is clueless, belligerent, or some combination of the two. Reader beware.
Chapter seven ('Living Online', pp. 127-145), provides Blood with her clearest opportunity to disclose what the experience of doing what the title suggests has meant to this civil and entertaining author of 'Rebecca's Pocket'. As with so much of what she has written here, the basic principle is common sense, even if that uncommon virtue must now be applied to a recent and uncongealed new medium of public disclosure. Living online does not mean that the blogger or his friends, acquaintances, and even the defenseless objects of his drive-by observations do not preserve and need a private life. Blood offers sensible guidance for observing those limits and avoiding the unwelcome intrusions to which technology has added such unwelcome afterlife.
An afterword and several appendices complete a fine introduction to what in the hands of some must be regarded as a craft.
When entering theological seminary many years ago, I was urged to read Helmut Thielicke's A LITTLE EXERCISE FOR YOUNG THEOLOGIANS. That slim, heartfelt volume did not teach anyone how to be a good theologian, yet it punched above its weight by setting a course for decent progress by practitioners of a craft who would now be more aware of self and community than would have been the case had Thielicke kept his pen locked away.
Rebecca Blood's little book does the same for aspiring bloggers. Perhaps all that one has with which to repay her are five well-earned stars.
A good general non-technical guide that is showing its age.......2006-01-17
Rebecca Blood of Rebecca's Pocket wrote this 200 page tome in 2002. I finished reading it in 2006. I would say about half of the information provided is dated or anachronistic. While her blog is full of interesting reading material for a technophile, the book needs a major overhaul.
Where is it useful? It's filled with practical advice as the title suggests. Most of that practical advice is more related to being a decent human being than it is to blogging. The Weblog Handbook is a good read if you are ethically challenged or prone to getting into flame wars with other citizens of the virtual reality we called the Net. It's a good read if you want to blog for the long term and aren't sure what sort of writing will make people come back to visit you again and again.
What isn't useful? Blogging is, like most new technology, a rapidly evolving animal, and this book should be updated annually to keep up with the state of the genre. Blogging is just now emerging as a serious alternative source of valuable information about the world. Also, if you're looking for advice that will help you pick the best tool to blog with, this book is not going to help at all. In fact, no book will help much with that. A single author blog, in my opinion, here in 2006, should be written and published, in every case, with WordPress. It's by far the most elegant tool out there.
The Weblog Handbook doesn't mention either it or Movable Type, which is what Rebecca's Pocket is based on.
If you need help figuring out how to blog in a civilized fashion, so that you will actually find and keep an audience, then The Weblog Handbook might need to go on your reading list. Other than that, I would say avoid this book unless it is re-released with more relevant information about the current state of blogging. Technology books have a very short shelf life.
Rebecca herself is a class act, and so is Rebecca's Pocket. However, a major overhaul of The Weblog Handbook is long overdue.
Update: Rebecca read my review and noted that she has hand coded the site up until six days ago. I never visited her during the hand coding days. Rebecca certainly practices what she preaches in the The Weblog Handbook and is a maven when it comes to dispensing sage advice regarding blogging etiquette.
I still believe that The Weblog handbook would be a more useful tome if it included a chapter or two on current blogging tools and if it was updated annually or every other year.
Nicely Done.......2005-10-08
Rebecca Blood's account of blogging, her story from the early days to the present, woven into a neatly structured account of what blogging is and how to go about it, is a pleasant read. The book is not technically deep nor philosophically profound, but well written and pitched at an appropriate level for the average starting web-logger.
One of the ways to measure the value of a book is to ask if the reading of it has changed the way one does things. The question is not so much "What did I learn?" but "What impact did this have on what I do?"
The answer, of course, is person bound; a book that has changed the way I behave may have no impact on someone else's actions. Rebecca Blood had a direct influence on my projects. For example, WikiDiction now has a space for linking to relevant quality blogs; added after finishing the chapter "Finding an Audience".
Nice work Rebecca.
Answers the Right Questions.......2005-09-12
Covers all the information a totally uninformed but interest person would need to know to get started. It is obvious that Rebecca Blood not only enjoys blogging but wants it to be the best it can be. Her chapter, "Living on Line" discusses practical advice such as not writing when one is angry and the ethics of being a part of an on-line community. It was satisfying, enjoyable, thought provoking and useful.
Makes me want to start my own weblog today!.......2005-08-22
I like Rebecca's Pocket and have been considering starting my own blog so I purchased this book. The best thing about this book is that Rebecca is obviously very enthusiastic aboout blogging, especially about what it can do for the confidence and writing abilities of the blogger. The book gives some practical questions potential bloggers need to ask themselves before starting a blog. The only reason this book isn't rated higher is that it is a little outdated - but it still has good information.
Did I end up starting a blog after reading a book? Not yet. I still haven't been able to answer for myself the question posed by Rebecca, "If you spend 8 hours + a day in front of the computer for work, are you willing to spend an additional few hours in front of a computer at home writing your blog?"

If your looking for derivations - this is the wrong book for you
There is also a shortage analysis techniques.
This book is packed with quick formula and would might be quite useful as implied by the "design handbook" name. Some of the later chapters cover some interesting details but could use more discussion which is quite brief throughout the text. See contents.
