Customer Reviews:
Good Fundamentals Book by a Talented Writer.......2000-10-05
This is an excellent book for the modern fundamentals of aircraft control design. Most subjects are clearly treated with just the right amount of illustrations and examples. The author makes good effort of explaining procedures without resorting to function calls from some software package. The last of the book devotes relatively little space to modern control theory. I would hope this talented writer would create something more advanced in the future that would expand on his treatment of the state observer and the use of the cost function.
An excellent introductory book. Highly readable........2000-08-27
The best aspect of this book is the simplicity in the exposition of ideas and concepts while giving more than enough information for an introductory book. Fully worked out examples are frequent throughout the chapters and helps even further in getting good grasp of new materials. If the reader has taken introductory courses in Vibration and/or Feedback Control, the book should be an easy read. The book is roughly divided into two parts: The flight dynamics part and control part. In the flight dynamics part, the explanation smoothly leads the reader from equation of motion to the concept of stability derivatives and how they relate to dynamic stability. The derivatives are very well explained and then summarized in tables for a quick reference. In the control part, the author starts from the classic linear feed back control and proceeds to the modern state space method and introduces optimal control design using linear quadratic regulator. The control part is an amazing time saver. I have never seen a more efficient introduction to optimal control as applied to aircraft dynamics. If the reader wants a full fledged treatment of optimal control of aircraft, the materials presented here are far from enough, but as an introductory book, this is an excellent exposition that lets the reader get to pace quickly and have straight forward perspective on the subject. Although there were some blatant typos, it is an excellent work and I highly recommend the book.
A lot of info on aircraft control in a small textbook........1999-04-13
I found this textbook to include a large amount of concisely presented material on all aspects of aircraft stability and control and feedback control system design. It covers everything from the atmosphere, to development of forces and moments and equations of motion, to estimation of stability derivatives, analysis of dynamics and modes of motion, and handy reduced degrees of freedom. It also includes many examples of designing autopilots and stability augmentation systems. I really liked the examples which included both classical and state variable methods. Each chapter also has several interesting example problems. I would recommend this text for anyone in the field of aircraft or missile flight controls. The only dissappointing aspect of the text is what I consider an excessive number of typographical errors. I would caution anyone not to use the equations or formulas without first checking the derivation. The derivations are clear and concise enough that the reader should be able to find these errors.

Eyewitness: The Amelia Earhart Incident
ASIN: 1591143195 |
Book Description
In the seventy years since the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan during a flight over the Central Pacific, their fate has remained one of history's most debated mysteries. Dozens of books have offered a variety of solutions to the puzzle, but they all draw on the same handful of documents and conflicting eyewitness accounts.
Now a wealth of new information uncovered by the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) allows this book to offer the first fully documented history of what happened. Scrupulously accurate and thrilling to read, it tells the story from the letters, logs, and telegrams that recorded events as they unfolded. Many long-accepted facts are revealed as myths.
Author Ric Gillespie, TIGHAR's executive director, draws on the work of his organization's historians, archæologists, and scientists, who compiled and analyzed more than five thousand documents relating to the Earhart case. Their research led to the hypothesis that Earhart and Noonan died as castaways on a remote Pacific atoll. But this book is not a polemic that argues for a particular theory. Rather, it presents all of the authenticated historical dots and leaves it to the reader to make the connections. In addition to details about the Earhart's career and final flight, the book examines her relationship with the U.S. government and the massive search undertaken by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy.
For serious students of Earhart's disappearance, an accompanying DVD reproduces the documents, reports, and technical studies cited in the text, allowing instant review and verification of the sources.

non-scientists beware.......2007-09-11
This highly technical read is not for the mere curious reader or fan of this great American woman. This book contains a vivid picture of the search for America's sweetheart of 1937,Amelia Earhart and her navigator ,Fred Noonan. An intricate compilation of radio transmissions provides a picture of an overwhelmed search party, miscommunicated information and an under skilled pilot. This is not the whole picture and if one seeks a glimpse into the woman behind the incident this is not the book for you
Captivating read on Amelia's Misadventures.......2007-08-17
"Finding Amelia: the True Story of the Earhart Disappearance," Ric Gillespie, Naval Institute Press, Maryland, 2006, ISBN 1-59114-319-2, HC 242 pges., Notes 44 pgs., Index 8 pgs., Content & Forward 10 pgs., plus 40 B/W photos, map & DVD (for computer) to access photos, maps, logs of the Earhart misadventure.
A captivating narrative & chronicle of the flying life and times of pilot Amelia Earhart, both researched 18 years and written by Exec. Dir. of TIGHAR, an Internat. Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. We are provided detailed accounts of Earhart's two world flight attempts, neither successful, with the aviatrix's last contact being July 2, 1937 while enroute to Howland Isle from Lae, New Guinea and thence to California.
Glimpses are given of Amelia Earhart's quest for notoriety during her earlier years which found her intrigued by flying machines, seeking adventure, finding celebrity status & desiring increased role for American women. But, it is not a bibliography or even a book about Amelia. It is a book of Amelia's monomaniacal attachment to flying, her aeronautical skill confines, that emphasizes her attempts to encircle the globe, imprima her 2nd attempt going Eastward, departing Oakland, California on May 19, 1937 accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan in her Lockheed Electra 10E twin engine aircraft. There is detailed & documented accountings of the massive search by US Coast Guard and Naval ships & planes and detailed reference to ships' logs of communications, etc., and interviews with Ham Radio operators who credibly appear to have identified her signals. The many B/W photographs, maps and the DVD are commendatory to this scholarly study. A few readers may find the detailed readings, etc., of the ships' logs and radiocommunication transmission times and references to frequencies and harmonics confusing & tedious, but the author's intentions to present the factual data is preserved.
Amelia Earhart on Fantasy Island?.......2007-06-29
I have followed Mr. Gillespie's search for years, and it is, sadly, largely based on wishful thinking instead of facts, such as the fuel capacity of Amelia's Lockheed 10E Electra. Simply put, there is NO WAY it could have reached where he claims it is. The book is an interesting read, and reasonably well done, and there are some opposing viewpoints presented. Factually, though, it is an illusion (one that has paid Mr. Gillespie quite well for a long time). An entertaining read, but not historical research-just a flight of fancy--
Finding Amelia.......2007-03-19
The book is a good chronicle of the last flight, and what is (and isn't known). While there isn't anything really new that hasn't been covered before, the book is a good compliment to others previously published on the Earhart story. The focus on (mis)communications highlights the thread of errors that lead to the tragedy. The inclusion of the disc (a nice touch!) containing the source data allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.
Clarification on Amelia.......2007-01-10
Excellently written. Very informative. I think this book clears up why Amelia dissappeared. It is no mystery any more.

Book Description
Can modern science tell us what happened to Amelia Earhart? The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has spent fifteen years searching for the famous lost pilot using everything from archival research and archaeological survey to side-scan sonar and the analysis of radio wave propagation. In this spellbinding book, four of TIGHAR's scholars offer tantalizing evidence that the First Lady of the Air and her navigator Fred Noonan landed on an uninhabited tropical island but perished before they could be rescued. Do they have Amelia's shoe? Parts of her airplane? Are her bones tucked away in a hospital in Fiji? Come join their fascinating expedition and examine the evidence for yourself! The new paperback edition brings the search up to the present, including tantalizing evidence of campfires and charred bones found on remote Nikumaroro.

"The Forensic Search for Amelia Earhart".......2007-09-04
"Amelia Earhart's Shoes: Is the Mystery Solved?", Udated 2004 Ed., Thomas F. King, et al., AltaMira Press, NY 2001, ISBN: 0-7591-0131-0, PB 374 pgs., plus 23 pg. Notes, 9 pg. Biblio., 20 pg. Index, & 104 B & W photos, illus. or maps., 6" x 9".
This is an academic work by a contingent of skilled scientific experts whose writings & basic investigative work was coordinated, in part & on behalf of TIGHAR (Int. Group of Historical Aircraft Recovery) & updated 2004. The 27 chapters describe a forensic approach to solve the mystery of aviatrix AE's disappearance enroute 2,223 miles to Howland Isle from Lae, New Guinea, July 2, 1937.
The book's format & length makes for difficult reading: -- it is based on best available scientific evidences & hypotheses of multiple disciplines of archeology, geophysics, aeronautics, anthropology, and review of both private & governmental archival information in addition to tabulating their search findings on tiny remote South Pacific Phoenix Isle "Gardner", but renamed Nikumaroro, or "Niku". Author was a principle TIGHAR investigator taking part in expeditions to Niku, & he writes with authority, -- having "been there, done that!"
Inclusion of more than 100 photos, illustrations, maps, etc., makes the reading more easily understood & tolerable: -- for it is not a book one picks up and being enchanted 'reads from cover to cover' without pause. For readers who want an up-to-date analysis of AE's disappearance this book is best read after the reader is thoroughly familiar with AE's character, avocations, skills, life experiences's and accolades by the press, politicians & the powerful, -- for Amelia was a complex person living in exciting, changing times on the cutting edge of new technologies.
Many of the chapters begin with stanzas of word parodies to be sung to certain melodies, attributable to TIGHAR but not author King. The parodies I found to be highly irregular, unsettling & not in best taste, so downgraded book from 5* to 4*.
Welcome back, TIGHARs.......2006-10-27
Those persistent TIGHARs are back with more suggestive but inconclusive research about what happened to Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 -- somewhere.
Every so often, somebody shows up in Hawaii with a kooky theory about Earhart, ranging from shot by the Japanese as a spy to still alive and keeping house in New Jersey.
The International Group for Historical Aircraft Recovery is far from kooky.
For one thing, they appear to have managed the trick of being zealous without becoming zealots. As lead author Thomas King puts it, "Most people have more pressing things to do" than hunt for a lost airplane that, given the odds, would more likely than not be under three miles of water.
The TIGHARs work, for free, in their spare time, on the assumption that, despite the geographical odds, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan didn't just run out of gas and sink under the ocean. They think Earhart missed her target but may have crash landed on an intermittently inhabited (but in 1937 empty) island named Nikumaroro, where Earhart and Noonan might have either survived for a while or been eaten by crabs.
It's "a mystery that can't be put down," King says.
But hard to pin down.
Since the publication of "Amelia Earhart's Shoes" in 2001, the TIGHARs have run down more physical evidence, including things that look a lot like panels from a Lockheed Electra, but nothing definitive yet. The revised, 2005 edition is preferred over the first edition.
The story of the hunt also reveals a great deal of fascinating information about the South Pacific, which is big, mostly empty and weird.
HOW you solve the mystery is just as important.......2006-09-26
Who says historical research and science have to be boring? In Amelia Earhart's Shoes, Dr. Tom King and others take us on a winding (sometimes loopy, even!) journey that tries to answer the question: What happened to famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart and renowned navigator Fred Noonan in 1937 after they vanished during her around-the-world flight attempt?
Amelia Earhart's Shoes does not pretend to solve the mystery - it does show that by applying the scientific method to a popular event, you can strip away all the myths and fables and assumptions and come up with relatively simple explanations that can be tested to see if they are true or false. That the scientific method may upset a few of those legendary apple carts along the way is proof that it works - something is either true or not true, provable or not provable. In Earhart's case, the truth may turn out to be much more mundane than some of the more colorful "solutions" to her disappearance would have us believe.
There is a lot of information in Shoes, but it is presented in an easy to read, almost chatty style (think ghost stories around the campfire while making s'mores) that keeps you turning the pages to see what the heck is going to happen next. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has now been to the South Pacific eight times to try and prove or disprove their hypothesis that Earhart and Noonan missed their destination, tiny Howland Island, and landed on another deserted island, only to die (or perhaps be completely missed) before the frantic searchers could get to them.
Amelia Earhart's Shoes is a great read that should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in what really did happen out there in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean almost 70 years ago.
Fantastic, not at all dry!.......2006-05-02
I saw one of the people involved in this project speak at EAA's big national air show in Oshkosh, WI last summer. It was the most popular lecture session I attended while I was there. Interested, I picked up this book expecting a thorough but dry, academic read.
Was I ever wrong! This book is not only fascinating, it's funny! It's written with some dry humor that made me want to keep reading more. And the authors lay out a strong argument, to boot. It does make one wonder...
I Couldn't Put This Book Down!.......2002-05-03
I picked up this book at my library on a lark. I've always been interested in what really happened to Amelia Earhart, but always just assumed that her plane crashed into the ocean. This book, however, completely opened my eyes to a new hypothosis: that Amelia and her navigator managed to land on an island and send out radio signals for help. The information presented in this book isn't just wild guesses and conspiracy theories - the authors make a point of backing up their thoughts with cold, hard evidence. I was hooked from the first page and got so engrossed that I ended up not doing my work at my job just so that I could finish a few more chapters. The book also has a wicked sense of humor and debunks the myth that scientists are just stodgy old guys. I'd reccomend this book to anyone with even an ounce of curosity. I'm holding my breath until Dr. Tom King and the other authors put out another book on Amelia. I can't wait to see what they find!

Book Description
From the author of the classic study of the aviation industry, The Sporty Game, a new book that chronicles the high-stakes rivalry between the world’s two largest aircraft manufacturers—companies that will bet the house on a single airplane.
Long one of America’s most successful and admired corporations—and its biggest exporter—Boeing struggled to maintain 50 percent of the market share for commercial aircraft after being overtaken by the European upstart Airbus in the late 1990s. But Airbus did not remain on top for long. By 2006, the company suffered from mismanagement and had adopted the kind of complacent, risk-averse culture that had once characterized its competitor.
Incorporating interviews he conducted throughout the industry—with everyone from company leaders, past and present, and Wall Street analysts to design engineers and factory workers—John Newhouse takes us inside these two firms to help us understand their struggle for supremacy in a business based as much on instinct as on economics. He examines the critical issues that Boeing has faced in recent years, including its difficult merger with McDonnell Douglas, its controversial move from Seattle to Chicago, and a series of corporate scandals that made front-page news. And he analyzes the troubles that have beset a once ascendant Airbus, notably an institutional structure aimed at satisfying the narrowly focused interests of its European stakeholders. Newhouse also explores the problems that now face Boeing and Airbus alike: potential competition from China and Japan, the challenge of serving burgeoning Asian markets, and the need to undo years of mismanagement.
Boeing Versus Airbus is a fascinating, informed, and insightful tale of success, and failure, in the turbulent, do-or-die world of the aircraft industry.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for All Aviation History and Airline Buffs.......2007-10-17
If you follow the Aviation and Airline businesses, you need to read this book. It is well written and organized, especially in describing the alternating ascendency of Boeing and Airbus. As a fan of Boeing and US aviation in general, I am personally pleased to see Boeing in the lead right now. However, I will not be surprised to see the pendulum swing again, and I hope that John Newhouse will be around to write a sequel to this excellent volume. Oh, and by the way, every airline passenger needs to read the chapter on the airlines. in fact, if you buy or borrow this book, be sure to have some of your air traveling friends read that chapter. My wife hates to fly, but is fascinated by airline operational details. She loved it.
Well-written, detailed and enjoyable.......2007-08-28
As a lecturer of tourism and aviation, I find this book very helpfull by its ability of exposing the reader to "the story behaind the story": highlighting managerial, economical, and marketing decisions of the 2 giants: Airbus and Boeing.
Highly recommended!

Inside look at the giants of the aircraft industry.......2007-07-12
John Newhouse, an experienced journalist and former "New Yorker" writer, has already written one book on the airplane industry ("The Sporty Game"). His fans will welcome the return of his expert insights, and may see this as a bonus supplement or extension. He has collected some fascinating new material for this work, so it is deeply informative, though perhaps not as dramatic as its title portends, since the titular competitors take turns winning. Newhouse clearly conducted extensive fresh research, and he presents interesting interview material throughout, although he gets a little awkward when he uses numerical data. We recommends this look behind the hangar doors of the airplane industry to business historians and, especially, to aviation buffs.
The case study in aviation.......2007-07-10
If you are interested in the rivalry between these two firms, look no further than this text...everything you need to know is in this book.
Second Act.......2007-07-05
"The Sporting Game" by the same author was a blockbuster. It described how Boeing gambled its net worth on developing a completely new and revolutionary airliner, the 747. After a rocky few years, this became a great commercial success, vindicating the daring gamble.
The new book, "Boeing Versus Airbus," describes an equally primal contest for survival, and the diametrically opposite strategies pursued by Boeing and Airbus. Unfortunately, the book is neither as well-written nor as well-edited as the first book, repetitive and full of opinions that don't always stand the test of time. Think of the book as a collection of articles, put into one set of covers. If you are or were involved in this industry (as I was) it's still a good read -- but more like a magazine article than the coherent book I had anticipated.

Book Description
Few, if any, industrial phenomena have been as dramatic as the United States mid-20th-century shift from peacetime manufacturing to wartime production. While the years 1939 to 1945 saw explosive growth in the manufacture of every type of armament imaginable, none was more emblematic of the industrial climate than the proliferation of aircraft factories.Zeroing in on the crux of the American military-industrial complex at a critical moment, this volume documents the production of fighters and bombers by legendary companies like Boeing, North American, Curtiss, Consolidated, Douglas, Grumman, and Lockheed.Illustrated with 175 period photographsincluding 50 rare color photos never before seen in printThe American Aircraft Factory in World War II conveys the incredible acceleration of aviation technology that took place during this period.Author Bill Yenne considers the various prewar governmental acts that got the ball rolling, as well as the notable gender shift that occurred on factory floors. He also describes the construction of megafactories like Willow Run, factory-design considerations, and the postwar conversion back to peacetime production.

OK for tech exams - but there are some errors in it .......2007-09-30
Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.
Really GOOD.......2007-08-16

THANK YOU [...] ABOUT THE SHIPPING??? JUST ON TIME, MY PRODUCT WAS THERE ON MY HOUSE, WITH NO ROWS FOR PAYMENT, NO BUSY PARKING, ON THE CONFORT OF MY HOME. NEXT TIME I WILL LOOK FIRST ON [...]
Very helpful.......2007-01-17
If you want to pass your interview in one of those big major airlines, this book is for you.
As a reference book to mantain you in shape it's Ok too.
All pilots must have !.......2007-01-12
All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.
Exactly what I expected !!!.......2006-11-07
Marvellous edition with tons of technical questions nicely ordered by topic. A must have for every (commercial or private) pilot even for people not looking to go on interview straight-away, but just want to brush up their knowledge.
3 remarks:
- I have to agree with the previous reviews on the fact that there are plenty of errors, the least the author/publisher could do, is build a list with errata.
- some more illustrations would have been nice - but it is no reason for not buying this book
- pitty there's no CD with a quiz of the covered questions, but then again: it's a book (not software).

Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook: The Ultimate Private Pilot Book
ASIN: 1560276703 |
Book Description
PC-based simulations, though touted by many in the aviation community as excellent flight training aids, are not being used to their full potential. This guide and the accompanying CD illustrate how to get the most out of Microsoft® Flight Simulator with general suggestions, specific advice, and practical tools. Student pilots can use the comprehensive information to review specific concepts and prepare themselves for formal flight instruction, while certified pilots can upgrade their navigation skills, learn about advanced aircraft and procedures, and complement their real-world flying with additional hours in the virtual skies. The materials are equally suitable for flight instructors looking for new tools to use in ground school classes and pre- and post-flight briefings and virtual aviation hobbyists will welcome the in-depth information on flying in the real world.

Somewhat helpful.......2007-09-05
The first few chapters offer more background then actual gaming tips. I would have liked to see more material on flying commercial airliners on flight simulator. This book concentrates on small planes.
Written for flight instructors.......2007-08-23
The book is good about telling you what you can learn from using flight simulator. It does seem to focus on the flight instructor side. I haven't flown the practice missions yet, so I can't comment on those.
Great book for flight instructors...........2007-07-04
...and student pilots using MS Flight Simulator for help in their flight training. As a private pilot I still find FS an amazing program and found the book useful as a guide to use it for training purposes. As another reviewer noted, the CD included is worth the price by itself.

Helped me with my training!.......2007-05-29
This is such a great resource for my training, in fact i used it together with the flight simulator and another book, The In-Flight Diversion Handbook by john nghiwete, to help me with my pilot training which i did in Florida. i recommend it to all my friends.
A good place to start.......2007-05-12
Lots of good solid information, well written and thought out; I would recommend it highly.

It also provides modern approaches to lighting, signing, and marking of airfields. . .paving runways. . .and much more. Planning and Design of Airports is an indispensable reference for civil engineers, transportation engineers, government planners, architects, and all others involved in any aspect of airport planning and design.
Customer Reviews:
Airport planner and engineer's viewpoint - updated.......2000-02-08
The best of its kind for the technical detail. We have most of the other airport and terminal design books on the bookshelf (up to 2005 publication date), but every time we come back to using Horonjeff for the serious design of new airports and extensions. It is also good for layout design by the engineer for terminals - although the architects may want more books. But there is another book - the 2003 book titled Airport Systems - Planning, Design and Management by Richard de Neufville and Amedeo Odoni - that will become the definitive text on airport design for the first part of the 21st century. So you'll need both, especially if you have to deal with the complexity of systems and stakeholders that are part of medium to large size airports.
Horonjeff has got the full set of data tables and charts to enable you to design anything. I seldom need to use the ICAO Manuals on a daily basis, and only use them for cross checking an obscure point. The upgrade from the 3rd edition to the 4th edition was a big one - it metricated much of the book, added in the latest aircraft (late model 737, 767s and ER, and the 777-200), and generally updated the book. Examples of new information are some good stuff on runway/taxiway capacity, and some additions to ACN/PCN. Worth spending the money to update. Essential to buy if starting from scratch. The best textbook for a technical course on Airport Engineering. Needs Airport Systems to have a rounded and modern view of masterplanning (and the successor to masterplanning - dynamic systems planning).

Good Introduction To Aircraft Rescue And Fire Fighting.......2007-09-24
This text, prepared by the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), is a good introduction to aircraft (and airport) rescue and fire fighting. The book is easy to comprehend, yet is fairly detailed. There is a lot of good information on aircraft-specific fire fighting skills, as well as other relevant sections on issues like airport familiarization (lighting, markings, grid maps, etc.) and aircraft familiarization (engines, electrical systems, composite hazards, etc.)
The book is very strong in dealing with situational awareness issues (e.g. topography and terrain hazards, wind direction, hazardous goods), and is especially good at dealing with different types of apparatus and extinguishing agents (Aqueous Film Forming Foam, Regular Protein Foam, Film Forming Fluroprotein Foam, Purple K, etc.) and their application devices and method (aspirating versus nonaspirating nozzles, portable form proportioners, etc.) Basic skills and assessment techniques are strongly reinforced, and the place of fire fighters in Airport Emergency Plans is thoroughly explained.
The book tends to be a bit repetitive and occasionally tedious, but for someone with interest in aircraft rescue and fire fighting, this is an indispensable text.

Book Description
In the first hours there was nothing, no fear or sadness, just a black and perfect silence.
Nando Parrado was unconscious for three days before he woke to discover that the plane carrying his rugby team, as well as their family members and supporters, to an exhibition game in Chile had crashed somewhere deep in the Andes. He soon learned that many were dead or dying—among them his own mother and sister. Those who remained were stranded on a lifeless glacier at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level, with no supplies and no means of summoning help. They struggled to endure freezing temperatures, deadly avalanches, and then the devastating news that the search for them had been called off.
As time passed and Nando’s thoughts turned increasingly to his father, who he knew must be consumed with grief, Nando resolved that he must get home or die trying. He would challenge the Andes, even though he was certain the effort would kill him, telling himself that even if he failed he would die that much closer to his father. It was a desperate decision, but it was also his only chance. So Nando, an ordinary young man with no disposition for leadership or heroism, led an expedition up the treacherous slopes of a snow-capped mountain and across forty-five miles of frozen wilderness in an attempt to find help.
Thirty years after the disaster Nando tells his story with remarkable candor and depth of feeling. Miracle in the Andes—a first person account of the crash and its aftermath—is more than a riveting tale of true-life adventure: it is a revealing look at life at the edge of death and a meditation on the limitless redemptive power of love.

Awesome!.......2007-10-13
I echo all the encomiums and accolades. Deeply insightful book. Word of caution: some parts of the book might be difficult to digest, but rest assured that the story in its entirety is a very powerful one. I do not think that the way I think about challenges and obstacles I face in life will be the same hereafter. I cried a few times reading this book. I don't think any other book has evoked similar emotions in me.
EXCELLENT STORY.......2007-09-11
Must read for anyone who has climbed in the mountains and a must not read for anyone going to climb in the snow or fly ain a plane over the Andes. Scary and heroic and entertaining all at the same time. You won't believe the story unless you read it straight from a survivor. Not only a survivor, but THE survivor who walked more than 70 miles with one other person until they reached help. 72 days in the Andes, thats the only fact you need to know to want to open this book and read it.
Easy read that takes no time to read. Highly suggested
Miracle in the Andes.......2007-08-08
An inspirational and rivetting book. Well worth a read to jog you out of everyday mundanity. Maybe you should always take a few blocks of choccy in your carry on luggage!!
"Even in this place, ours lives are worth living".......2007-07-24
Readers will wonder what Nando Parrado has to say that wasn't already said in Piers Paul Read's masterpiece, "Alive." Even Parrado expresses his doubts that he can add something to Read's tale (he says Read told the story "masterfully"). But, behold a new masterpiece: Parrado and co-author Vince Rause have created a stirring, compelling piece of work.
Whereas Read's work is a facts-based recounting of the events, Parrado and Rause put you inside the head of the pivotal protagonist, the survivor most committed to striking out on an expedition. We see his commitment ("I tell myself that each step takes me closer to my father"), his fears, his horror at losing two family members at the crash site. Amazing stuff, shaped into powerful, declarative language by Rause. The text is crisp, sharp and fast moving. Rause captures Parrado's voice.
It's estimated that Parrado and fellow expeditionary Roberto Canessa traveled some 45 miles before running into a peasant herder tending to his flocks. That's 45 of the hardest miles imaginable. So hard, in fact, that the rescuers ask Parrado - as they ready to scale a 13,000 ft peak via helicopter - "Are you sure you understand this map?" They're simply incredulous (rightfully so) that these two had crossed the high Andes on foot ("Impossible!"). But, indeed they had. It's mind-boggling...a trip that has to rank in the annals with Shackleton's journey across the seas in a skiff back to South Georgia.
Alive revisited: Uraguayan rugby teammates struggle seventy-two days to survive a plane crash in the Andes.......2007-06-19
Those who read Alive, published in 1975, probably remember most: plane crash, Andes, cannibalism (not necessarily in that order). Crash survivor Nando Parrado's attempt to revisit the harrowing, desperate situation and retell the story of forty-five people on an intended 3.5 hour trip from Uraguay to Chile that went bad, reads amazingly well. So much so, and seamlessly, that it seems the co-writer, Vince Rause, deserves more than the second billing he was given; his name printed in tiny font below Parrado's on the cover. With a bit of background, excellent descriptions of the goings on up to, during, and after the crash, the fight for survival, a devastating avalanche, and the attempts to hike out, Parrado and Rause have done more than one might expect. Three criticisms: Parrado's contention that he agreed to participate in a hike for help even though he knew it was futile; the awkward though somewhat logical interchangeable use of "my father" and "Seler" (his dad's name); and the word "miracle" used in the title, considering Parrado's account sounds neutral to negative on the concept of religion and divine intervention. His description of the first inkling of a seemingly obvious food source, "My gaze fell on the slowly healing leg wound of a boy lying near me," [page 95] is haunting. Sensational but new (to me), the "meat" consumed by the survivors ultimately included the organs after the supply of muscle was exhausted. Dreams of his father, having lost certain family members during the ordeal, kept him going and the strong spirit of teamwork amongst the close-knit rugby players helped them achieve victory over the overwhelming obstacles they encountered. Sadly, the pilots, reluctant to continue on to the intended destination during a storm which had earlier forced them to land in Argentina, were prodded into their fateful decision by the vacation-hungry fliers and a looming limit on their allowed 24-hours of refuge in the country. One of the best-written books I've read involving an assistant author. Good companion reads: the original - Alive by Piers Paul Read, and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.
