A Masterful Resource Written by a Master - THE Source on Drawing Realistic Clothing.......2007-08-08
Burne Hogarth was one of the very first artists I came across when I began teaching myself to draw, and Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery is one of the very first of his books that I purchased. Very few books that I have come across deal with the folding and wrinkling of cloth and other materials in so meticulous and compendious a manner as does Hogarth. Wirtten less as a 'how-to' and more as a series of well-designed examples, Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery covers nearly every kind of clothing wrinkles one might think of, and provides exceptionally detailed illustrations to show you how you can apply these lessons to your own work. While other books give short shrift to drawing realistic-looking clothes, this one is simply THE only source you will need on how to give your characters' costumes that extra pop of realism. An indispensible book, and highly recommended.
Student Artist-Modeler-Animator:.......2007-06-08
As most Hogarth's books, this one is not at the least descriptive. The drawings are a bit more frequent, and you may find it useful. Some of the drawing I did not enjoy too much, but, all-in-all, they still demonstrate the proper material. The author provides 4 decent approaches to the illustration of wrinkles in different situations, mostly differenting dependent on the type of physical movement the character (human, in all cases) makes. Most of the book talks about drapery, but there is some information on how to apply the same principles onto skin.
This is a must-have for a character designer, whether you work in 2D or 3D. It will provide a beginning artist with the basic understanding of the dynamics of drapery and clothes, but it won't be much use for a medium-to-experienced studio artist, especially when she/he draws from life.
Definitive, but pricey considering alternatives that exist........2006-11-25
I owned this book for years, and as a picture reference it covers every conceivable wrinkle and drapery situation. But when I had to sell off most of my library, I faced the fact that I simply never used this book. The copious but maddeningly abstract text and little arrows never succeeded in helping me think about wrinkles so that I could predict them and do them without reference. And if you're just copying them for reference, you'd really want many more pictures of commonplace clothings rather than one each of every possible kind of clothing. The truth is, leafing through a bunch of magazines or stop-framing DVDs is more likely to get you exactly what you want.
And yet, while seeking to revive my cartooning habit recently, I found I did want a printed reference on clothing wrinkles -- but only if it were cheap. Following the suggestion of another commenter here, I got a copy of Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure, used, for under five bucks. And I highly recommend it. The twenty-ish pages on clothing wrinkles at the end of the book are obviously not as definitive as Hogarth's treatment, but they are aimed dead-on at the practical needs of the contemporary artist (and fortunately, men's clothes have not changed that much in the decades since it was written -- at least not from the wrinkle standpoint). It's at least as good a practical guide on this subject, and includes a wealth of material on similar topics that somehow get skipped in most art books -- men's and women's shoes, for instance. For five bucks or less, a much better value than the Hogarth. Though I can't rate the Hogarth below four stars, and understand five: he does his utmost to deliver, and the illustrations are marvelous.
Drawing clothing, wrinkles & drapery from *memory*..........2006-05-05
Probably the *easiest* way to learn to draw clothing is to copy photos right along with pictures by our own favorite artists. That *seems* to be the most direct approach. But couldn't we profit from a book on this subject? The answer here simply is- Yes!
This is intermediate info here- a *much* better book for beginners is Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm. It contains a brief yet excellent section on clothing, wrinkles & drapery, in addition to the obvious figure drawing skills- my highest recommendation!
Burne Hogarth's accomplishment here includes a brand-new vocabulary for identifying & describing pretty much all possible wrinkles. He does more than describing with words- he *depicts*. The entire book is drawn with a red-orange pencil-crayon, and all drawings are by Hogarth himself. Packed with illustrations- every single page has a drawing on it- most include instructions-words. It's basically learning by example here; these drawings are meant to be copied. Yes, many examples are a bit overly wrinkled, as some have pointed out, but I think he does this in a positive way. What good is a book on wrinkles if the drawings barely show any? This book is great for fashion artists and anyone concerned with drawing from memory. It's not entirely necessary for everyone however; moderately recommended.
Other books worth considering: Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure; Barbara Bradley's Drawing People: How to Portray the Clothed Figure; George Bridgman's Drawing the Draped Figure; and even some of the many Japanese animation & comicbook instructionals, like How to Draw Manga: Bishoujo Around the World by Hikaru Hayashi. Check 'em out!
Exagerrated for better understanding.......2006-03-28
I can only recommend this book to every artist out there, because it's the only one that covers this very important subject -- how to draw clothed human figure effectively. And not just sitting or posing human figure, but a figure in complex motion.
Let's face it; this subject is not for beginners. You need to have some clue and love for drawing. Also, this book book is even challenging for artist used to paint and draw lifeless poses and naked figures. Yes, Burne Hogarth challenges all of them, same as Michelangelo challenged and criticized Tizian, emphasizing Tizian's lack of will to study drawing and human anatomy. Although one of the greatest painters and masters of color in human history, Tizian had his shortcomings in the eyes of Michelangelo. Just compare their two distinctive styles and you will understand why.
Drawings in this book are well presented but exagerrated for our better understanding. Simply, if we don't understand how our body moves under the cloth, we'll have no idea how to render wrinkles and drapery. In other words, this books gives understanding, sets the basic principles and rules, and encourages us to study subject matter profoundly.
Art is not easy. Drawing human figure is difficult, but drawing clothed human figure is even more difficult, because wrinkles will show all the shortcomings in our artistic skills. Drawing better and drawing more, and exploring great references such as this book will make us better artist in all respects.

Customer Reviews:
Great Basic Colored Pencil Book.......2007-05-24
This book has absolutely gorgeous drawings, something lacking in most of the other colored pencil books. It contains all the basics one would need to learn before picking up a colored pencil; everything from A to Z. The book is easy to read and fun. There are no lenghy discussions on the theories of the colored pencil medium: it gets right to the point. The second half of the book has detailed instructions on how to achieve certain textures, which I haven't seen in other books, such as glass, copper, silver, lace... all with absolutely jaw dropping examples. I bought it along with "Drawing for Right Side of the Brain", which makes a fantastic course on the mechanics of drawing itself. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
A partial solution at best.......2007-05-17
A better title for this book would be Color Pencil Solution Book for Realistic Still Life Drawing. People and animals have merely one or two appearances each among the examples, and land- and seascapes have no representation at all. It would have been an excellent reference to showcase multiple styles also, but we see only the work of the two authors, whose styles are very similar. The topics that are presented are well presented, and if realistic still life is your thing, this book will be a good resource. But if your interest is in multiple styles and landscapes or portraits, you'll often be looking elsewhere for solutions.
Very helpful .......2007-03-08
There are so many ways to use colored pencil. I like Janie's work, she is so precise and accurate. This book helps you with various techniques. It's like a trouble shooter for your colored pencil art work.
A fabulous book.......2006-06-16
I have read many coloured pencil books, but this is the only one I have bought or kept. I refer to it often for ideas on how to combine colours or figure out a problem. Some might say that it isn't broad enough, but you have to be willing to take the basic ideas and develop your own solutions as well :-)
Better than the $175 workshop I just attended!.......2005-04-19
I just paid $175 to attend a colored pencil workshop by a woman that I thought was going to really help me with my work instead she said that this book was what got her started. I found that 99% of what this woman taught in the class was ALL from this book I already owned!! So save yourself money on workshops from so-called "famous" teachers & invest in this book!! You won't be sorry & it will teach you so much!!!! By the way, the reviewer who wants a less realistic approach to cp , there are too many cp books out there like that already (Bet Borgeson, Michael Warr, & 2 Walter Foster ones).

Review of advanced techniques.......2000-08-29
This book is OK if you are a Pro/e user with moderate experience. It explains about start parts - which I've found to be lacking in all the proe users I've met for exaample. Also the assembly techniques are ok. I would take exception to the book being aimed at advanced users. Anyone who has used proe extensively will find this book unfulfilling. Also it contains little or no reference to sheetmetal.
Finally a good Pro E book.......2000-06-22
I have bought about 4 books now on Pro/E. First two were introductory and that was fine because i was just starting to learn Pro/E. The other two were junk. However, this book is great. The book is definetly designed for a user who has already covered the basics. If your just learning, start with some basic tutorial books and then get this one. Shows some real good stuff and well laid out.
Techniques for today.......2000-05-11
I felt this book was well written and easy to understand. We all know how boring technical literature can be and how difficult some examples are to follow. This book gives clear step-by-step direction that is straight to the point and delivers a message of not only advanced techniques, but also of proper modeling and design fundamentals.
Well written & helpful.......2000-01-08
And I thought I knew Pro/E! A must have!
Excellent book for the somewhat experienced Pro/E user.......1999-12-07
This book presents several excellent tips to get the most out of your Pro/Engineer experience. It has several well laid out sections on everything from creating start parts to setting up drawings to doing simple surfacing. It is well written but does assume a decent working knowledge of Pro/E. It covers such topics as correct assembly techniques, the new intent manager, patterns, sweeps, and skeleton models. The book is an excellent source beyond what is taught in the basic Pro/Engineer courses currently offered. It is really a must have as far as I'm concerned. Well worth the money.

Book Description
Pro/ENGINEER Solutions and Plastic Design guides readers through practical examples of plastic components modeling, teaching robust modeling techniques and providing inside tips to delivering a manufacturable design. Using a series of exercises and tutorials, readers will learn to identify and model part surfaces for injection molding, split design assemblies into components, and use analytical tools to evaluate the quality of the finished design project. Because Pro/ENGINEER CAD models designed for manufacture in plastic are less intuitive to work with, the overall philosophy of how to approach such a part design as presented in this book differs sharply from the basic building block construction techniques in other Pro/ENGINEER tutorials.

If you want to learn how to design plastic parts on Pro E this book has absolutly no interest... It shows beautiful models but figure out yourself how to create them on Pro E. Good luck!
Not worth it........2000-05-12

Just not much here.......2000-04-28
I am in between a novice/intermediate user level in Pro E 20. I have a small background in plastics injection molding but mostly silicone molding. This book spends most of the time explaining basic injection molding design (things like draft, runners, core/cavity). But very the discussion of these features is very basic and mostely antedotal. You could learn just about everything covered in this book in about 1 hour talking with a mold designer and probably alot more with the mold designer. If you have been commissioned to start designing molds then you will need a hell of alot more then this book offers you. The final section of the book has work excercises designing parts. But it just tells you to design some parts on Pro E, NOT how to use Pro E to design the parts. I have done several tutorials that cover general features of Pro E but was looking for something that gave some new features in Pro E and HOW tos on those features. Not in this book.
Useful for those new to the design of molded plastic parts........1999-07-25
Excellent book for people new to the design of injection molded parts. A good introductory text with an overview of some common processes used to manufacture molded plastic components. If you are new to the design of molded plastic components and are a novice or intermediate Pro/E user then this book will serve you well. Basic design considerations are presented along with techniques on how to capture them using Pro/E.

Very useful book for the fledgling artist.......2007-05-20
I bought this book after struggling to draw birds. While it does not focus specifically on birds, it does cover many different mediums and teaches a few simple techniques that are invaluable to any artist, whether they paint or draw animals, landscapes or humans. While this book does not specifically deal with the subject of digital painting and drawing, many of the techniques within can be adapted to a digital format. I highly recommend this book to any artist, no matter their specialty. The lessons learned in this book have been invaluable, but may be difficult for a younger reader to understand.

Artists Complete Problems & Solutions Handbook
ASIN: 0715314955 |
Book Description
The invaluable handbook for all drawing students takes a practical problem-and-solution approach to a range of popular subjects, showing common mistakes and how to overcome them.
The book is divided into 12 themed sections to help teach specific areas of interest. Each section contains three to four spreads showing the common mistakes beginners can often make. Typical errors are shown on the left-hand page with annotations by the author highlighting what the problem areas are. On the right-hand page, Friend shows how a better, more realistic depiction can be achieved, looking at each component and providing comments for guidance.
After the problem-and-solution pages, the author shows how the drawing techniques covered can be combined to produce a complete picture which integrates all the lessons learned. The information throughout is presented clearly with plenty of useful annotations. The handy size also allows readers to take it wherever their sketching leads them.
Trudy Friend is an accomplished artist and teacher who teaches specialized courses in all mediums. She has also written for The Artist and Artists & Illustrators magazines.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent drawing course.......2003-10-20
This is the most helpful book on drawing techniques in pencil, there are so many books showing spectacular drawings without actually any hint how one can develop and reach that professional level. This book gives hundreds of very practical advises and helps to establish your own style.
Anyone who wants to improve drawing skills and make the process of learning more systematic and enjoyable do not hesitate, just get the Trudy Friend's book, and start practicing under experienced artist instructions!
An Excellent Reference.......2003-05-11
This book is worth the price if only for the author's wonderfully expressive drawings - and her detailed "before and after" solutions cover a broad range of the pitfalls that a beginning artist faces in learning to draw landscapes, forest scenes, still life, people and animals. The style is direct and readable, and Ms. Friend's drawings (I found the cat on page 109 irresistible) provide numerous examples of how much can be expressed using nothing but pencil and paper.
FINALLY....A BOOK ON LEARNING TO DRAW!.......2001-08-08
AFTER PURCHASING THIS BOOK ..., AND WAITING IN EARNEST FOR IT TO ARRIVE I WAS MORE THAN PLEASANTLY SUPRISED AT THE CONTENT FOUND WITHIN. THIS BOOK IS THE REAL DEAL...! TRUDY DOES AN AMAZING JOB DISPLAYING HER TECHINIQUES TO BOTH THE NOVICE AND THE EXPERIENCED ARTIST, REGARDLESS OF WHICH CATEGORY YOU HAPPEN TO BE IN.....EACH CHAPTER EXHIBITS A "DO" AND "DONT" FORMAT FOR EACH OF THE DRAWING THEMES, SUCH AS PORTRAITS (MY FAVORITE!), LANDSCAPES, ANIMALS, ETC. ON THE LEFT PAGE IS PORTRAYED THE "DONTS", WHAT NOT TO DO , AND ON THE RIGHT SIDE, THE CORRECTED METHOD, THE "DO"S IF YOU WILL.....BY ANALYZING THE LEFT PAGE YOU CAN THEN TRAVERSE ACROSS TO THE RIGHT PAGE AND SEE HOW THE TWO TECHNIQUES DIFFER, AND HOW TO IMPROVE YOURSELF..AGAIN,FINALLY A BOOK ON HOW TO DRAW!

Book Description
How does the facade design of a building influence climate design? How can planners guarantee flexibility of usage, determine the technical strategy and select from available systems accordingly? How is the maximum comfort for both users and residents to be attained? This volume offers a comprehensive approach to energy efficient building design in addition to providing practical planning aids for a wide selection of building types. In order to realize an integrated planning process, the book examines the interaction between design, climatic requirements (room temperature), and the necessary building technology and equipment, using a large number of international projects as examples.
