Love 'em.......1998-07-27
I got my first set of Bookmarks for Cooks at an herb farm and just loved them. They act as "paperclips" plus you can write any changes or adjustments you make to recipes on the cards. My friends thought they were great so I got them all a set last Christmas. If you love cookbooks, these bookmarks are for you!
Nifty !.......1997-06-14
I got it as a stocking stuffer for someone else and changed my mind. On a whim I stuck one in a cookbook that I used to use paperclips - lots- on. What a difference! I no longer have to flip around but can scan the top of the cookbook & go right to it

Book Description
Bookmarks: Fluency through Novels is a series of companion textbooks to novels that provide teachers with creative exercises and activities to supplement the teaching of a novel. Bookmarks: A Companion Text for
Kindred is an integrated reading-writing skills text that addresses each of the seven intelligences identified by Howard Gardner: there are tasks and activities for the linguistically, logically/mathematically, kinesthetically, spatially, musically, interpersonally, and intrapersonally intelligent students.
The textbook is designed to be used along with Kindred, a novel by Octavia Butler (published by Beacon Press), which tells the story of a young black woman who disappears from her home in 1970s California to save the life of her white slave-owner ancestor in the early nineteenth century. Through the novel and textbook, students learn about nineteenth-century American life, the origins of slavery in America, the conditions under which slaves lived, the Underground Railroad, important historical figures (like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass), and the civil rights movement of the twentieth century.
Each of the six units begins with a preview of the reading and free writing topics, followed by exercises that improve comprehension and vocabulary building. Students use response journals to think about their personal connection with the novel. They are encouraged to discuss different topics and then write about what they've discussed. The Beyond the Novel section in each unit introduces factual background information in which students learn about slavery and other material mentioned in the novel. Puzzles and out-of-class activities are also included at the end of each unit.

Let this handsome volume introduce you to the great French painter Henri Matisse through a brief but informative biography and more than 80 full-color reproductions. Included are works from more than five decades in various styles- -early still lifes, Mediterranean allegories, vivid dance images, and the collages that so clearly say "Matisse." One of his last, most ambitious endeavors is a stained glass for a chapel at Vence in the south of France--one of the most acclaimed ensembles of church decoration of the 20th century.

Book Description
"BookMarks is a moving and revelatory memoir, as Holloway contemplates her own reading history as well as that of her family...this is a work of fiercely intelligent scholarship."-Susan Larson, New Orleans Times-Picayune
"Part memoir, part historical research on the reading habit of writers, Karla Holloway provides the reader with a rare opportunity to reflect upon his/her own reading experience: What have you read? How did you learn to read? Where were your 'protected and isolated spaces' for reading? How has that early experience shaped your current reading? A unique contribution to our understanding of the importance of reading in shaping our culture."-David S. Ferriero, Andrew W. Mellon Director and Chief Executive of the Research Libraries, New York Public Library
What are you reading? What books have been important to you? Whether you are interviewing for a job, chatting with a friend or colleague, or making small talk, these questions arise almost unfailingly. Some of us have stock responses, which may or may not be a fiction of our own making. Others gauge their answers according to who is asking the question. Either way, the replies that we give are thoughtfully crafted to suggest the intelligence, worldliness, political agenda, or good humor that we are hoping to convey. We form our answers carefully because we know that our responses say a lot.
But what exactly do our answers say? In BookMarks, Karla FC Holloway explores the public side of reading, and specifically how books and booklists form a public image of African Americans. Revealing her own love of books and her quirky passion for their locations in libraries and on bookshelves, Holloway reflects on the ways that her parents guided her reading when she was young and her bittersweet memories of reading to her children. She takes us on a personal and candid journey that considers the histories of reading in children's rooms, prison libraries, and "Negro" libraries of the early twentieth century, and that finally reveals how her identity as a scholar, a parent, and an African American woman has been subject to judgments that public cultures make about race and our habits of reading.
Holloway is the first to call our attention to a remarkable trend of many prominent African American writers--including Maya Angelou, W.E.B. Du Bois, Henry Louis Gates, Malcolm X, and Zora Neale Hurston. Their autobiographies and memoirs are consistently marked with booklists--records of their own habits of reading. She examines these lists, along with the trends of selection in Oprah Winfrey's popular book club, raising the questions: What does it mean for prominent African Americans to associate themselves with European learning and culture? How do books by black authors fare in the inevitable hierarchy of a booklist?
BookMarks provides a unique window into the ways that African Americans negotiate between black and white cultures. This compelling rumination on reading is a book that everyone should add to their personal collections and proudly carry "cover out."

Insightful.......2007-01-29
I really enjoyed this work of Ms. Holloway. It was very insightful on many levels. I appreciated her opening my eyes to the role that books played in the lives of many well known Black intellectual artist--lacking a better description. I also felted it was somewhat cathartic, for Ms. Holloway, because of the very personal and tragic event to have taken place in her life. Thank you Ms. Holloway for sharing. Blessings to you. A very enlightening read.

Customer Reviews:
Teensie bit disappointed.......2007-10-10
I am a little disappointed in these bookmarks. When you tear them out of the book, it cuts off one side of the bookmark so that only 3 sides of it have a white border. I think it looks odd to do this, and perhaps I'm the type that loves symmetry. Overall, not the quality I was expecting, but they are pretty.
Not what I expected........2007-03-03
From the reviews of these, I was expecting something much nicer then what I recieved. The patterns are nice, but the bookmarks are not laminated or anyway fortified. They also tear very easily.
They do the job.......2007-02-11
They're alright. These are not top-notch, as you have to fold & tear to create each bookmark. Not exactly designer edges. However, they work, and they're pretty.
Very nice bookmarks.......2007-01-29
These bookmarks are very pretty, and sturdy. The patterns on the bookmarks are very interesting, and fun to look at. :)
Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful Bookmarks!.......2006-10-14
I just received these bookmarks today and all I can say is WOW!
***
Above, you will find 2 of my customer images showing 10 of the 30 bookmarks.
***
They come in a book of 6 sheets (5 bookmarks make up each sheet).
***
The approximate dimensions of each bookmark is 7 1/4 inches (length) by 2 1/4 inches (width).
***
There are perforations to separate them.
Tip: When separating the bookmarks, make a point of separating each sheet first. Do this by bending at the perforation trail that runs all the way up and down the inside of each page. (Carefully bend the page back and forth a number of times to guarantee an easy clean separation.)
Now that the sheet is separated simply bend on each perforation trail between each bookmark to separate them. (Again, carefully bend back and forth a number of times to guarantee an easy clean separation.)
Another technique is to take the 3 staples out that hold the book together and "voila", the pages come away for easier back and forth bending and separation.
***
Each bookmark is laminated and "double-sided" with a beautiful marbleized design.
"Marbleized papers have long been associated with books. These one-of-a-kind masterpieces are often used as covers or endpapers in fine bindings and the 30 marbleized bookmarks presented here carry on the tradition. The intricate swirls and feathers of these striking designs will add a touch of elegance to whatever you are reading."
***
I believe a book of these would make a great gift for any friend or loved one.
***
In conclusion:
I enthusiastically recommend these bookmarks for marking your place in a book in between readings.
Personally, for me they seem to make reading a book all the more enjoyable!
***
I hope I have been helpful to you.
