The New Southwest Home: Innovative Ideas For Every Room
ASIN: 0811811646 |
Amazon.com
Once upon a time these New Mexico towns were rough-and-tumble settlements peopled by drifters and dreamers. Sante Fe and Taos are still very much a cultural rendezvous, but far removed from their humble beginnings; Sante Fe has lately become known as the Beverly Hills of the Southwestern U.S. Among its full-time residents are the Dennises, the husband and wife author-photographer team who host this tour of their neighbors' private homes. The owners and designers weigh in with their own words about creating these eclectic sanctuaries, making it a very personal tour.
Book Description
At last, a beautiful, affordable style book that offers a rare insider's look at the highly personal and innovative aesthetic for which the Southwest is famed. Santa Fe residents Lisl and Landt Dennis have documented eighteen of the most unusual and awe-inspiring homes and gardens of the Santa Fe and Taos area. Meet the owners and designers, tour their homes, and witness the grand vision and loving detail they have devoted to their living spaces. With two hundred gorgeous full-color photographs, Behind Adobe Walls is an essential keepsake for the Southwestern native or visitor, and a visual inspiration for anyone who would like to create their own Santa Fe, wherever they may call home.
Customer Reviews:
perfect.......2007-09-15
This book is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Perfect condition and rapid delivery. Excellent service.
Nice photography!.......2006-07-29
I am a native New Mexican and even though the others did comment on how nice a book about "real" New Mexicans would be, I do love this book for the excellent photography. It is on my coffee table now and I just love looking at it!
The photos ARE in color..........2003-08-07
Unfortunately, the sample pages are in black and white. Never fear, they're actually IN COLOR in the actual book!
Got this for my Mom, she loved it!
I Live Here!.......2001-05-01
I would NOT loan out my copy of this book! I live in Taos (moved AFTER reading the book) and have since been to some of these homes, they are wonderful...and not at all pretentious...as one reviewer said. I use this book even today for inspiration in my own Taos home.
Colorful inspiration.......2001-02-21
I was specifically on a quest for inspiration for Santa Fe style decorating with bold color schemes, somewhat off-the-wall furnishing choices and the like. This book fit my needs perfectly, I'm happy to say. I agree with other reviewers that the book is rather limited in scope, but it was exactly what I was looking for. Beautiful photographs, clear writing, overall a very dynamic book.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (3rd Edition).......2007-02-15
This book is terrible. If you are a certified HVAC specialist, it is for you. However, if you are new to this then it is a total waste of money. Explanation is bad, example are nowhere relate to the section discussed. And worst of all, there is no answer keys. You will not have a clue if you are correct or not. Every chapter there are as least half of the review question are calculations, yet in each chapter there will be probably one page showing how calculation is done. Example one of the simplest thing:
COP = Cooling Effect / Power Input. If you look up the index, you cannot find the word "cooling effect", find out whichever chapter they discuss, or show you how to calculate the "cooling effect".
You are in luck if you do not have class that uses this book. You have bad luck if you have a "good" teacher that using this book. You are doom if you have a "bad" teacher who using this book, might as well drop it. Waste of time and money.
Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings, 2nd.......2003-06-20
Very good book. Helps you understand the systems inside (and outside) of buildings in use everyday that most folks don't have a clue about. If you are interested in understanding how your building equipment functions this is a good book for you. Down to earth and well written. Recommend to property management personnel.
Great book for newbies!.......2001-05-02
If ur stepping into the building services industry, this book will be a comprehensive packaged info for your reading pleasure. Includes lotsa real-life diagrams, plan routings, concepts and explanation. It's 4am over here in Singapore and I've just finished reading one of the topics, just imagine how attractive the contents this book has! However, the only and regretable drawback is: the units are empirical which make it very difficult for me for in my country, we use SI metric units.

Paintbrushes and Pistols.......2007-06-13
Paintbrushes and Pistols is the story of an unusual alliance that changed the American West and American art at the turn of the century. It was an alliance between Ernest Blumenschein and other immature, naive men of great artistic talent who became known as the Taos Society of Artists, Fred Harvey, a genius in the field of food and lodging, and the promotion-minded men who operated the Atxhison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad.
Together, they helped to create the westward migration that resulted in the vast cities and smaller towns that exist today. And together, the highly eccentric members of the Taos Society of Artists - the last artists who would devote themselves to capturing the dying West on canvas and in sculpture - radically changed styles of American fine art and commercial illustration.

Early Santa Fe and Taos Art Colonies in Mabel's World.......2002-06-07
In December of 1917, Mabel Dodge Luhan, a wealthy patron of the arts, arrived in the very rural community of Taos, New Mexico. She arrived with an emotional need that drove her to be a focal point and a catalyst in the New Mexico art community. Although she died in 1962, she is still a controversial figure in Taos, where her spirit lingers in her house; now a Bread and Breakfast frequently used for artists retreats. Her personal artistic expression is found in the books she wrote, but she is best known for the amazing role she played in drawing painters, writers, and other artists to Taos and Santa Fe.
"Mabel's Santa Fe and Taos" gives a brief biography of Mabel and of many of the most famous people whose lives she influenced. The people covered in this book include Charles Lummis, Adolf Bandelier, the Taos Society of Artists, Alice Corbin Henderson and William Penhallow Henderson, Witter Bynner, Spud Johnson, Andrew Dasburg, D.H Lawrence and Frieda Lawrence, Dorothy Brett, and Georgia O'Keefe. This book also contains historical information about the culture of Taos and Santa Fe from 1900-1950, weaving together the people and the places in Mabel's world.
The text is informative and well written. Black and white photographs of the people and places are found throughout the book. Although this is an excellent overview that could be appreciated and understood by those new to the subject, it can also be used to summarize previous knowledge of the Santa Fe and Taos art colony during this time period.

Customer Reviews:
A treasure for architects and serious decorators.......2003-01-14
Any architect or serious interior decorator exploring, or deeply into, the southwestern style will not be disappointed with this book. It is filled with hundreds of photos of interior and exterior features, including wide-angle views encompassing entire rooms, showing southwest fine art and artifacts in a domestic context. Don't be surprised that most of the photos are black and white--although there are dozens of color photos too. Instead, appreciate the play of light and shadow that finely crafted adobe structures have at their command. Black and white photos show this in high contrast. But don't let the photos overshadow the text that will provide an education to adobe architects of all levels. Anyone iiving in a true adobe, and wants to follow a classic southwest theme, will find lots of inspiration--and then the hunt will be on to find the kind of indigenous southwest decor seen here.
The ABC's of Santa Fe style homes.......1999-05-04
This book offers all one could want in the way of Santa Fe style home building. Seeing the interiors of actual Southwest homes is a huge inspiration when decorating. Filled with many informative photos.
Architectural details of Adobe Homes.......1999-04-19
This should be titled Architectural Details of Adobe Homes of New Mexico." The author has lived in Santa Fe and clearly loves it. The reader will get many ideas from the photographs of existing New Mexican homes to incorporate into their adobe home. However, I must say that after awhile, everything being wonderful, unsurpassed, great, wears thin.
Misleading Title.......1999-03-27
This book is a historical archive of what are referred to as homes. Mostly black and white photos of Indian dwellings that does not lend to actual interior decorating. This title belongs to the history section in a high school library. I had purchased and returned this work in the same breath.
This should be titled "A history of SouthWest interiors"........1999-03-01
When I purchased the book I thought that it would present a modern overview of southwestern interior design; however, it offered a historical overview complete with hundreds of black and white photos of ancient architect. If your looking for a history lesson without going to the museum, then this is the book for you. Incidentally, I returned it immediatly. It does have a fancy title though.

Book Description
The complex creative process of design is put into perspective by the Tao te Ching. Relax and pace yourself- take time to reflect and draw upon your inner resources- then let the Tao release you from the pressures of external forces so that the freedom to design can flow through you. The Tao shows you the way to tap your own abilities and transform them into inspired designs.

?.......2000-06-12
"Design is not just the intangible penetrating the tangible and the tangible assimilating the intangible." This is a quaote from the book. It this type of unfinished, incomprehensable, meanignless, open ended sentances which continues thoughout the book. (I use the term book loosely) I was a little leery of a book reviewed by the author twice and never by a reader. If I every was more disapointed in a purchase in my life it is with this book. A little hint to anyone looking for desgin advise; purchase a magazine with an interview of a designer. You will recieve more helpfull information in a two page article than in this 180pg. book.
Missed the nail!.......2000-05-23
Just by looking at how only the author himself reviewed the book twice, should have told me to stay away, stay away! But, intrigued by Taoism in general and a graphic designer by trade, I decided to give it a chance. The meaningless rambling from the reviews continued on into the book, and on and on in a downward spiral. I thought it would get better once I got into it, but it ended up being a waste of a day of my life.
