Book Description

Learn what Advergames are, how to use them, and how to create your own! Welcome to the world of Advergaming! Interactive games are one of the fastest growing forms of entertainment and theyíre on track to exceed movie ticket sales. Using them as an advertising tool, however, is a relatively new idea that is catching on fast. Advergames are created not only to entertain, but to sell a product, brand, or company. More and more companies are using these free, brand-centric games to supplement, and even replace, traditional branding methods. If you are a Web designer, graphic designer, or game developer, youíll want to learn more about Advergames. They're showing up everywhere, on the Web, cell phones, CD-ROMs, even embedded in email. The Advergaming Developer's Guide teaches designers and game developers the ins-and-outs of this innovative new form of advertising. It shows you how to create a variety of Advergames from the ground up, even if you have no prior game development experience. The book begins with a detailed overview of Advergaming, branding, gameplay, and the two main creation tools, Macromedia Flash MX 2004 and Director MX. From there youíll learn how to conceptualize, develop, launch, and track the success of your Advergame. In the last part of the book, you'll create your own games, including a linking, matching, puzzle, memory, pinball, makeover, arcade, and whack-the-mole type game. And finally, youíll learn about the business realities of Advergames through case studies with leading companies, including Blackdot, YaYa Media, Inc., and AGENCY.COM. This is the one resource you'll need to get started with Advergames, whether youíre a Flash/Director developer already involved in advertising and game creation, a game developer looking to expand your development channels, or a Web designer looking for an innovative new tool.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible for Beginners.......2007-07-18

If you are an advanced Flash or Director user this book might be tolerable, but as a beginner it is HORRIBLE. I have spent 3 hours so far on the first tutorial. Not because the concepts are difficult, but the descriptions in each step are so awful. Most simply, they don't explain the basic principles of how to do things, but then just jump into tutorials telling you to do things like " Set up a new layer and type this into the actions panel". How do I set up a layer, where is the action panel? The book never told me.

Even if you are an advanced user, the tutorials are very poorly set up. For example on one step they tell you to place a bunch of items on the timeline. After placing all 15, in the next step they start referring to different layers that the items are on and how to manipulate them. What they didnt tell you at any point before is that you were supposed to put all the items on specific layers and that the layers have to have specific names that they refer to later. How could this book possibly have gotten past any editors?

Conceptually: Great idea. Could be a very handy book.
In execution: Don't know how it ever got published.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-03-18

I love playing the games and this book tells the story behind some of the greats! Blockdot has a game site called www.kewlbox.com where you can play all of them!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read for background info.......2007-04-21

If you're learning design, this is a great way to start. It lays out the basics and has numerous interviews with current designers. It will help lead you toward a career in design if you pay attention to all their clues. It has many different examples of different design fields, so you can decide which one interests you most. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the color layout. For a design book, it should be more aesthetically pleasing, but it had only black, white, and green. I'm sure that's to keep cost down though.

5 out of 5 stars Great book depending upon your interest.......2006-04-10

I do agree with the previous reviewer that this book does not have practical advice in terms of performing graphic design related duties. There are plenty of books out there that you can acquire that will outline the process of designing, design elements etc... such as "The Elements of Graphic Design" by Alex. W. White.

However, this book as its sub-title clearly states is "A Guide to Careers in Design", and in that regards performs very well in outlining the myriad of different fields and industries that Graphic Designers are involved in. Also, they interview many key figures involved in these fields and pick their brain regarding the state of design, dynamics of their respective industry and also how one should best approach beginning a career as a designer.

I found the book invaluable in that it was like having wise uncles in dozens of different design industries and having a talk with you about, "How things really work." Somewhat light reading but still quite informative.

2 out of 5 stars Missed the mark.......2006-03-11

This might be a good book for someone who don't have any design experience. I was looking for direction in how to begin as a novice with some training rather than starting from scratch. This book is for those who would say, "Hmm should I get into graphic design? Where do I start I no absoultely nothing?". The description just wasn't very helpful to me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable.......2007-04-18

I think that this a really nice introduction to a career in graphic design field. Mostly it seems to be directed at someone who is in the middle of the road, so to speak, but I think that newbies will also find some nice tips on how to avoid headaches and pitfalls of this specific business.

4 out of 5 stars Good Practical Advice for Professionals New to Freelancing.......2006-11-06

This is a good guide for those designers who are thinking about going freelance. The book summarizes basics of the business, financial topics and absolutely necessary ethics. ALL freelance web designers without a formal business education should read and learn these fundamentals for being a professional.

5 out of 5 stars Best book yet.......2006-07-07

I've never bothered to give a review before, but this book is so helpful I had to put it down for a moment and give my two cents. I've been in the industry for four years and am in the process of going freelance. This book gives excellent advice for drumming up business. Not vague at all.

It would also be extremely helpful for people looking for their first job after design school.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book when I was starting out!.......2006-03-24

Well, here I was, too distracted to write a proper raving review because I was busy absorbing in all of the wonderful, easy to follow and sometimes downright humorous advice from a long awaited book that is refreshingly geared towards design professionals of any level. Novices will definitely appreciate the start-up tips from the perspectives of a virtual plethora of experienced design communicators from all over. More experienced designers will find helpful suggestions on effectively managing and growing their career. And of course, what good resource is complete without detailing some very useful advice about avoiding pitfalls and other related issues along the way.

With an abundance of references and resources that include contracts, networking, self promotion and more importantly, a guide on how to realistically rate your services, The Savvy Designer's Guide To Success delivers on an even more important level; raising one's awareness on the often underrated value of the Creative Communications Designer.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading.......2005-12-31

I was browsing the graphic design section of Barnes & Noble the other day looking for a different book on the same topic. I couldn't find the title that I was looking for, so I picked this one up, grabbed a cup of coffee, and started leafing through it. I read a few bits of the beginning chapter, where Fisher details the advantages and disadvantages of different traditional and not-so-traditional educational paths for would-be designers. As a freshman at a liberal arts college majoring in graphic design, I was immediately intrigued. I temporarily forgot about the book I had been looking for and bought this one instead. As a testament to how great this book is- I finished it in just 2 days. In fact this is one of the few books where I can honestly say I "couldn't put it down." Fisher writes in an informal, easy to read style. His approach to giving advice is very open-minded but very no-nonsense and practical at the same time. Most importantly, this book covers it all: everything from the initial education of the designer, to starting out in the industry, to self-promotion, legal issues, and dealing with one's mistakes and screw ups. Throughout the book Fisher draws on the experience of nearly 100 designers and deign firm owners and the pages of this book are dripping with references to other books, magazines, and great online resources for designers and other creative professionals. This book gave me some great insights on getting started as a graphic designer and has me even more excited about my career. Five stars, without question!

5 out of 5 stars Wish I bought this book sooner!.......2005-11-10

I am finishing up by degree in Graphic Communications in December. I checked this book out of our school library and didn't want to give it back...so I bought my own! What I love about this book is that it breaks it down by industry and specialty area. I also like the way it breaks down what you should include in your portfolio for those areas. It is nice knowing that there is more to Graphic Design than just being a Graphic Artist in a print shop or a newspaper. This book gives you an idea and an overview on what's out there. Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars good book for students.......2003-01-29

This book is a good overview of what it means to be a graphic designer. It goes through the different areas of design, and different job positions.
Everything you need to know about the design world is in this book.

There is a lot of good to be said for this book. But the thing that jumps out and slaps me in the face, right off, maybe because I have dealt with new design students and new professionals for the past several years, is a few dumb comments such as "If you are going to be a good designer, fine. If you aren't don't bother. The field is full of mediocre talents as it is."

And how, pray tell, does one know whether one is going to "be good" during the first year of ones study? --Or even during the first few years of ones professional practice, when sweeping out the place may be included in your job description, and hands-on real world work may come your way slowly and in small discreet bits? And doesn't every creative person at one point or another question the worth and validity of what he or she is doing, EVEN after recognition has started rolling in and they understand that their work is generally perceived by their peers as good? Further, I would ask whether everyone HAS to be a Saul Bass or a Neville Brody. Isn't design a broad enough field to encompass the work of those with less Olympian ambition? Comments such as the one above are relatively few and far between, to be certain. But where on earth was the editor when pompous uninsightful stuff like this flew in under the radar? Although the sheer snideness of the comment may make many jaded pros cheer, I have to wonder what useable information this kind of comment contains for the neophyte at whom the book is supposedly aimed? --To show that a lot of jaded pros have a really bad attitude?

I do not favor the Pollyanna view whether we are talking art or careers. But I believe it is impossible to know how you will fare at something before you have been doing it a while. Thinking otherwise --for example, that a teacher in a design 101 class can tell you whether you are "any good" (and I have seen or heard about many students asking this very question)-- just intimidates and discourages people from being brave enough to give the life that they would see for themselves a try. To me, that is way too limiting.

I bought this book to know about the game industry which I thought its an easy business to get into it.

for those who want to know about the differences between the Publishers and the developers, this book is just perfect and you will not need any other book for more informations. Its simple, direct and every word in it is important. once you read it, you will not leave it without finishing it. very exciting to read if you are curious about how those companies work together to make games or the processing of making games.

The guys who wrote this book are working for Activision which is one of the best companies in the game industry.

Buy it and you will read it twice or more.

5 out of 5 stars Game Plan: Breaking into and Succeeding in the Videa Game Business.......2007-01-12

Game Plan, a tag-team effort between Alan Gershenfeld, Mark Loparco, and Cecilia Barajas, is a detailed account of what developers, publishers, and all other aspects of the game making market, are interested in for new recruits. If you don't know the difference between a developer and a publisher, this is the book for you. It starts out on the basic of basic of levels, defining everything, from game console to mmo.

If on the other hand, you have been in the market for some years, and are seeking to forward your career, this is the book for you. It explains what you should do to get noticed by the big guys. It explains what you should do to get your dream game made, so you can sit in front of your screen for days on end, staring in awe, at the your own idea, made into a multi-million dollar production, making sky-rocket sales.

Or, if you just like to read for the heck of it, read this. That is, assuming you don't absolutely hate video games and everything to do with them, at the very bottom of your heart. As I was reading it, this book ended up getting me so excited, I was ready to go home and teach myself programming with nothing but an online manual, an open-source language, and 2 hours. But of course, that didn't work out.

An excellent and interesting read, which may or may not keep you up at night, depending on your devotion and drive to create games, and that stands for a lot, considering it is a non-fiction book, which I normally despise.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book.......2006-03-02

This 280 pages are for sure the most simple, direct and usefull text about the game development careers. We not only get the all picture, also great advices and directions in what we have as options in this game business, I recommend this reading not only for programmers (like me) but to everybody who feel lost and is looking for some path to follow. I tooked 2 days to read it, very clear writing.

5 out of 5 stars Full of details, I couldn't put this book down........2005-08-01

I am currently attending college for a BA in game software engineering. I saw this book and I knew I had to read it. The authors are very knowledgeable about the game industry. I am really impressed with the amount of resources listed in the back with websites, schools, software companies addresses, and suggested readings. This book is perfect for anyone looking to break in. I finished the 280 pg book in less than 2 days. It is written very well, and it is very easy to follow. I will be using this book for a long time to come.

3 out of 5 stars Light on Content.......2005-04-26

Good book for someone who's never been in a computer-related field and never been into gaming but now wants to get into games. But how many people like there are there?

I would argue that most people who want to get into the game industry are either in another tech. industry or are gamers. Either way, most of the content in this book is obvious and can be found on the web with minimal effort.

True - it's not a very expensive book. But even so - I felt a little cheated....

2 out of 5 stars Biggest Piece of Fluf In My Library.......2005-09-02

This book is 199 pages of fluffy copywriting. There's no substance!

I'll find myself reading a section that feels like a long winded introduction, then...POOF...onto the next topic. Over and over again.

The target audience of this book (Designers) is too broad. Because of that, everything is vague generalizations. Maybe Goldfarb could write about some specifics if the demographic was narrowed down to only one of the following: Graphic Designers, Multimedia Designers, Freelance Designers, etc.

If you need this book to tell you that a resume and portfolio are important to finding a new job, then by all means, pick up a copy. But if you've taken ANY classes in design or have ANY work experience, don't waste your time...

5 out of 5 stars read this cover to cover.......2002-07-05

After I read Careers by Design, I immediately ordered copies for everyone on staff at Portfolio Center and urged them to read it from cover to cover. That‚s how important I believe this book is. I can think of no more useful tool for illustrating the state of the industry today, how it is evolving, and what we must do as educators to ensure our students will be the utmost prepared to enter it. As for students, this book is required reading. Goldfarb offers smart insight into
everything from discovering your creative niche--and finding the ideal job--to giving your notice, and her wisdom concerning manners, ethics, and reputation is invaluable.

In addition to being one of the country‚s most respected design educators, he is an AIGA Fellow and a founding member of AIGA/Atlanta. His students have won more than 4000 design and advertising awards.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Roz Goldfarb!.......2002-06-13

I learned a lot in design school, but there wasn't much taught about how to actually go out and find a job. Two months after graduation, I was getting desperate when I saw this book in a store and picked it up. It distinguished the areas of expertise in the field and explained how to pursue opportunities in each of them. Chapter 12 is my favorite, because it told me exactly how I needed to be presenting myself to prospective employers. I am now weighing TWO (!) attractive job offers and, wouldn't you know it, I am using Chapter 14 of this book to guide me in negotiating my salary before choosing. Roz Goldfarb, you are a goddess!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Advice from the Best in the Business.......2002-06-13

Anyone who works (or hopes to work) in the design field wishes he or she had access to a corporate recruiter for advice and updates on the industry. Careers by Design gives you exactly that for less than twenty bucks. I worried about my portfolio, my resume, my contacts, wondering what had changed in the field since I was last "out there" and this book was my life saver. To say I highly recommend it is an understatement, because it is a no-brainer. Go out and get a copy of this book today, then know exactly how to get the job you have been hoping to find! It worked for me.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and useless.......2005-11-15

Blablabla. What a waste of words and what few relevant information for webdesigners! When I read the chapter about accessibility I thought: the author should have studied accessible writing first.
It was so useless I left it in the train. By far the worst webrelated book I ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to create standards-compliant web sites.......2005-09-05

Web standards are essential to good design, yet most titles covering web design don't focus nearly enough on standardization options and techniques. Learn how to create standards-compliant web sites using Web Standards Design Guide, which explains XML, CSS, xForms and much more. Designers learn when and how to use them, how to convert existing code, and how to fine tune workflow and processes to ensure both compliance and better service efficiency.

5 out of 5 stars Great informative Book.......2005-06-07

I really enjoy this book. The one thing that i like the most is the fact that i can keep refering to the book. It is Not just a Read once Book,Web Standards Design Guide is THE book to have to help make great web sites for everyone to enjoy! The Examples and tutorials are awesome, very real life samples.

5 out of 5 stars Where the Web is Going.......2005-05-14

It used to be that designing a web page was so simple. You learned a bit of HTML and started coding. You looked at what you had and altered it to suit. Then Front Page came along and you didn't even have to learn HTML.

Alas, no more. ==Why standards? Because you want to get the most interaction possible between your web site and things the might be visiting it. Things? Yes, things. You normally think of a browser visiting your site to display the page, but search engines use robots to visit as well, and you want your site to show up when when Google or Yahoo come to call.

The particular standards covered in this book include:

XHTML, the logical extension to HTML,
CSS, which has been around a while, but is largely ignored,
Accessibility, where you need to consider that your visitor might not have a mouse or a screen,
XForms, the upcoming replacement for HTML forms (note upcoming, don't use them yet),
XLink, the same thing to replace hyperlinks, eventually.

This book is kind of a heads-up on what web development is going to become. It's the information someone wanting to stay up to date or just starting to learn needs to know.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-08-15

This book was a perfect tool to benchmark my design studio. After 14 years of business I found that Foote's advice, assumptions and calculations were right on the mark ... even for a business in New Zealand. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars For large firms not small freelancers.......2007-08-02

This is not for me. It is pretty good for interesting reading, but not made for freelancers like me.

5 out of 5 stars Another great guide for the wanta-be entrepreneur who seeks to have her own small consulting practice!.......2007-04-29

This book is divided into four sections: organization, personnel, marketing, and operations. It also has four appendices. I really liked this book very much. I'm a volunteer SCORE counselor who regularly counsels SCORE clients on starting their own small businesses. I highly recommend the instant book to people similarly situated to my clients since it will help them better grasp and understand what is involved in starting a business.

If you want to put together a business plan (and you should if you want to start a business), then use this book to help you by looking at the following chapters:

1. A Solid Foundation
2. Structure and Facilities
4. Organizing
9. Positioning
10. Promoting
12. Pricing Your Services
15. Financial Issues

After you prepare your business plan and have your business up and running, then you'll be able to:

14. Grow the Business
16. Personal Issues (Cash Out).

I particularly liked the Case Study #6 in Appendix 2 (Failing to Institutionalize the Company). And Appendix 3 (A Designer's Short Course on Marketing) was very well done. Chapter 10 on "Promoting" was very well done given the amount of pages devoted to it.

I was a bit disappointed with the Sample Business Plan Form included in Appendix 4. But the book is not exactly set up to cater to people trying to write a business plan. So I can't be too critical here.

This book is packed full of content regarding the business of graphic design (and small business, in general). It will be well worth your time in reading it if you have any interest in small business. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The Culture A.D. review.......2005-10-07

Culture A.D. is an advertising and design agency (hence the A. D.) we write our reviews to be quick and straight to the point. The Creative Business Guide to Running a Graphic Design Business has become a vital tool for us. I wish I could say I've read the book cover to cover, but that's just not real. The truth is we use it for precise issues and targeted advice. Mr. Foote makes it plain and draws from real world experience and that's what we need. It's text book, well, non-text book information and well worth having. It's like have a "canned mentor".

5 out of 5 stars Practical Methods for Success.......2004-08-25

Foote gives well-researched advice and organizes it into easy-to-follow sections; perfect for anyone who has only twenty minutes to spare at any time. Model documents, role playing, case studies, questionaires and financial formulas will help you take the action needed to make your busines healthy. I look forward to other editions where corporate law and insurance in other countries is aknowleged. An appendix for Canada would be nice. It is still a must-have book no matter where you live.

Words of advice to those who plan, design, or edit newsletters from the author of Newsletter Design, Edward A. Hamilton. Follow the advice of this designer of world-renowned publications and your newsletter will never land in the junk-mail pile. You'll learn techniques used by the most successful publications to attract readers and rivet their attention. You'll learn to master simple but powerful page layout, sparkling typography that promotes clarity, strength and elegance. you'll learn how to edit and design with compelling journalistic photographs and vivid graphics. In addition, the book introduces a twelve-part grid design that not only opens up new creative possibilities and relief from the standard three-column page, it works perfectly with computer coordinates. There's plenty of support for desktop publishers using WordPerfect, Lotus, Adobe, and Quark. You'll get tips for spicing up your pages with tables, charts, graphs, pictographs, and maps, using simple software programs. It's all here. From logotype to printed pages, you won't find a more readable, on-the-money guide to designing newsletters.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful.......2002-10-10

This book is very useful and I use it as a guide when producing newsletters for my campus. The author's tone is a bit high-handed but the information is invaluable. There are examples of styles and set-ups for very fine standard styles. Not anything cutting-edge in it, though. The author is thorough in language useage and styles. Lots of what not to dos in here.

3 out of 5 stars Really old book.......2002-09-04

This is a good book with lots of tried and true design tips, but if you're looking to redesign your newsletter and give it a "current" feel, be forwarned: this book is almost 10 years old, and the sample newsletters they feature show it. I think it's a good book, but given its age it should be cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Designing a Polished Newsletter.......1998-08-23

With this book plus "Producing a First-Class Newsletter" By Barbara A. Fanson, I learned everything I needed to know to produce a very polished redesign of the monthly newsletter for my company's customers. Well worth the money.

Book Description

Designing Web Site Images is an instruction guide to web object design. It covers the creation and handling of graphics for the World Wide Web, including image management strategies, compression, palettes, graphic creation and manipulation, conversion, working with display text, simple animations, and PhotoShop's "onionskinning" techniques for animation. This book uses a practical, straight-forward approach to give users step-by-step, classroom-type instruction, without the need of a classroom. PhotoShop is the software tool of choice, but other downloadable freeware and shareware programs are used. This book establishes a balance between artistic quality and compression for creating web sites that not only look great but function well on the Internet.
