Outstanding!.......2007-09-09
If you have really blown it, this book is an amazing and powerful blessing. You may feel like God no longer has any use for you and doesn't want your praise and that even if He forgives you, he'd just as soon you slink in the corners. I felt that way. And apparently many, many people who love God and blow it feel that way. I read the third part of this book first and am still working on her initial sections. I feel like this book warrants the attention of every Christian. We all need to be on our guard--all need to take seriously just how much there is an enemy who hates our relationship with God--all need to consider how to help each other and how to restore each other when we fall AND some of us may desperately need help and encouragement in knowing how to move on from horrible sin when we blow it big time.
Caution! Spiritual Growth Ahead!.......2007-06-30
I love Beth Moore and this book is no exception. Initially I purchased this book hoping to understand the experiences of others but I was profoundly changed by reading this book. I often have 3-4 books on the go at the same time and I rarely finish books to completion but this is one of the few books that I've read cover-to-cover. Be prepared to allow God to challenge and change you; it will allow you to look at others who have fallen with grace and mercy and prayerfully help them to repair. Thank the LORD that no one is beyond his mercy and grace!
Recommended Reading for Leadership.......2007-06-20
I highly recommend this book to be read by all Christians, and especially those who are in leadership, whether it be as the pastor of a large church or as a lay person. You don't need to have "fooled around and gotten into trouble" for this book to be highly useful. We are without a doubt living in an age of deception and seduction. One look at the number of Christian leaders that have fallen, whether by an affair or by believing and teaching error over truth, and you can quickly see how hard Satan is gunning for the Church. Just like in the garden, the enemy is waiting to seduce us with a lie - and he doesn't care what the lie is - so long as he can insidiously lead us away from truth. "Insidious", by the way, means "to develop so gradually as to be well established before becoming apparent" - which is exactly what Beth writes about and what happens in seduction - all of the sudden you realize you are in big trouble and don't even know how you got there.
This book is not written to those who do not believe in Jesus. Nor is it written to those who willfully sin and are looking for a convenient excuse for their sin (i.e. the devil made me do it). It is written to those who are fully devoted followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, those who love Him with all their heart and would never want to sin against Him. It is written to strengthen our armor of protection and to help sort things out for those who have been "had" by the enemy, as they stand bewildered looking for an explanation as to what the heck just happened to them. It has been a great help to me both personally and in ministry, for we are not to be unaware of the enemy's schemes. As Beth writes; "The lion has no right to be in our yard. One broken slat in our fence can say, 'come right on in my yard'. Yes, wise are we when we become frequent surveyors of our fence lines."
The author writes in a clear and simple way so that all may understand. The message shoots straight and has God's blessing upon it - a testimony to the amount of prayer and fasting that went into the making of this book. And as always, Beth encourages her readers to go deep in the Word of God and prayer ... these two are forever indispensable. You will be blessed as you ask the Lord to show you areas that you are or might be vulnerable to the lies of the enemy, and therefore, not to somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. If, however, you've found yourself in trouble, I also recommend that you read "Get Out Of That Pit", also by Beth Moore, after you read this book. The "pit" analogy will give you a good visual to help steer clear in the future from the pits that got you into trouble in the first place. But I do recommend that you read "When Godly People Do Ungodly Things" first. If your heart desires God above all else, this book (with the Holy Spirit's help, of course) will help you in your restoration.
Incredible Insight.......2007-05-08
A friend of mine gave this to me to read. This book was absolutely amazing. The insight that Beth shares is incredible. Beth lays it all out there for us to see and understand in her down home Texas way. She's absolutely great. She not only addresses what happens, but gives many examples of how and why these things happen. Beth also gives step by step instructions for recovery. What a mighty woman of God. I so admire her ability to be transparent to her readers. I couldn't put this down once I started reading it. I would highly recommend this book.
Spiritual armor.......2007-01-06
Amazing book for anyone who has ever felt bomarded by or "stuck in the web" of satan. This book travels through how a Christian can fall into sin, how to healed, and how to renew fellowship with God and live a Godly life. This book has been amazing for my walk with God and I highly recommend it!

a good success book.......2007-07-22
Cloud does a good job on how to have a successful life. First, you must find what you would like to do as a career. Second, deal with problems by fixing it or eliminating it. Third, create a well thought out plan step by step all the way to reaching successs. Also think about options and see if they will hurt you or help you in the future. Fourth, be proactive, be a person of action. Fifth, be dilligent and industrious by doing something and make progress, no matter how small the progress is. Sixth, Be sure to fix what you hate in a positive way. Seventh, do not seek justice for yourself, seek rather to give mercy and forgive. Eighth, study and grow in humility. Ninth, realize that you cannot please everyone.
Profound, important lessons of life.......2007-05-04
This takes some study and time to read, but the basics rules of life in the book come from decades of counseling and therapy work by this fine doctor.
My favorite and most difficult to achieve? To do the right thing, even though others may become angry or upset. So hard if you are raised to be polite and always try to please. But totally necessary to accomplish what you must in life.
Good job, Dr. Cloud.
The best book for building a life.......2007-04-21
This is the best book I have read for finding success in life - hands down. Any of these "Nine Things" can bring about a great improvement in the reader's quality of life. All of them together is a great foundation for building a life of legacy.
Read it, study it. It's worth the time.
One thing you simply must do: read this book!.......2007-02-08
I have read a lot of motivational books over the years and expected this one to be full of the same type of advice, warmed-over. I was really surprised by how good the book is. I even gave a copy as a Christmas gift to a friend who has a degree in counseling. And in my Toastmasters club, I gave a speech about this book, and one listener recommended it to her book club, and now they're reading it. The book is written in a way that grabs your attention. It's full of ideas on how to gain control of your life and how to handle relationships in a better way.
Book Description
Bestselling author and expert on leadership John C. Maxwell shares the only rule that matters-in business and in life. How does a person judge what is ethical?Sometimes it's clear. In the past year or two, ethical lapses in corporate America have been well documented. But is it always easy to see where the line is in life? What's the standard? And can it work in all situations? John C. Max- well thinks it can. In THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS BUSINESS ETHICS, Maxwell shows how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard-regardless of religion, culture, or circumstances. Along the way, he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common pitfalls that throw people off the ethical track, and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to personal integrity.

Save your money and go practice the Golden Rule.......2006-05-11
This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes. First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it. Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business. Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?
I'll save you $9.72 (+s/h) and the 45 minutes it'll take you to read this. Here goes... Unless you were raised by wolves, it's pretty likely you've heard of the Golden Rule. Ok, now think about how this rule can be applied to all of your business dealings. That's it - you got it!
Whew! Now that you have an extra $9.72 in your pocket and 45 minutes of free time, go practice that Golden Rule by treating your kids/grandkids/neighbors to some ice cream.
Return to the Golden Rule.......2004-09-15
In a recent newspaper, in one day ... Enron chief pleads not guilty, Adelphia execs found guilty, no retrial in stock scandal ... and this was just the front page of the business section. On that same page, I noted the use of the phrase, "ethically amoral." Have we finally reached a point where we can construct such phrases? Corruption, moral relativism, the meaning of "is," have you had enough?
If you are looking for some insights into the problem and perhaps an alternative approach, here's your book, There's No Such Thing as "Business" Ethics. Maxwell writes, "...There's only ethics." Maxwell is right, and through interesting stories and common sense he argues for the adoption of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
I read this book in hopes to validate my own research for my book, Swapping Lies! I felt that perhaps my call for a return of honor to the workplace was a bit too much, too naive. I was surprised to read that I am not the only one who feels this way. Maxwell is calling for the Golden Rule! Many will consider the Golden Rule a bit naïve in today's world, yet it is principle that successfully guides us in our business endeavors. A principled and focused leader is not naïve. In fact they are a constant source of strength and confidence to all. Spend just an hour to read this book. It may change you and your company.
Golden Rule as the General Guideline for Ethics.......2004-04-15
Book Overview:
This is a motivating, short, and easy to read book that tries to persuade the reader to adopt and apply the Golden Rule to their life as the ethical standard. Although the title of this book could mislead and create the wrong impression that it is intended to be read by businesspersons, this book can be used by anyone, since the general purpose is to apply the Golden Rule not only to the business environment but also to the personal life of the readers.
The book will generate great results and deep impact in the life of those persons, whom regardless of their social status or occupation, find themselves lost or disoriented regarding to their ethics standards. Throughout examples and real life stories in several aspects, the author illustrates his points and creates consciousness among the readers. At the end of each of the seven chapters, readers will find four to six straightforward questions that will help them look inside themselves and reflect what they have just read.
The author starts the book by citing ethical issues that have been creating concern in our society. Afterward, he focuses in the benefits and the importance of the Golden Rule. Subsequently, readers will find valuable tips of how to start thinking and applying this concept, which give introduction to other concept known as character. In chapter 5, the book encloses five factors that are considered to be the deceivers for people to follow an appropriate ethic path. Later, in the following chapter, the Dr. John C. Maxwell persuades readers to follow eight of his suggestions of how people can develop strong character in order to pursue golden opportunities. Finally, the author invites the readers to pursue the Golden Rule instead of the "Real Gold" by adopting five practices.
The Golden Rule works, This Book Falls Short.......2004-03-02
The application of the Golden Rule to our everyday lives is something that we can all agree is good. John Maxwell does a good job or defining the golden rule, its worldwide acceptance, and how we can apply it to our everyday. It was more like a walk down memory lane; to a time when a teacher or mentor first explained the concept to us. However I do have a few concerns with Mr. Maxwell's book. First there might need to be a better job at researching Fletcher thoughts on Relativism...in his book he labels Fletcher as the father of mordern day Realativism...quoting (or rather misquoting) Fletcher's statement that love can justify anything. I am in not postition to defend Fletcher, for I am not that familiar with his work, however he does not just use the term love. Rather he uses the term Agape Love, coming from the ancient Greek...the highest and purest form of love...one that God would have for us, a term any minister or pastor of the Christian Faith would know very well. Second after page 86 the book get repediative and seems to get off track. This links to my last issue with the book and why it gets a bit off track, as it turns into an advertisement for Mr. Maxwell's corporation, the last several pages are nothing but adverstisements asking you to visit their web site for free character quiz and then taking you down a road of Buy...buy...buy our products. Not what I expected and was somewhat disappointed. In short taking some know concepts, putting a somewhat of a new spin on them and then publishing to add another book to the list of those authored. Part of the disappointment is that I know this book could be better.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, December 1997: The first three books in Bill Cosby's Little Bill series, which fall somewhere between Fat Albert and Fatherhood in sensibility, are designed to help kids cope with tough social situations. In The Meanest Thing to Say Little Bill must figure out how to avoid the challenge offered by the new kid in his class, "The Dozens," a duel of insults Bill doesn't want to join. With his family's help (which is free of preaching), Bill finds a solution.
Dr. Alvin F. Poussant, a frequent Cosby collaborator and advisor, adds a useful introduction to explain why Little Bill not only beats the game, but also goes on to befriend its instigator. (The publisher recommends the book for ages 4-8, but because the author is Bill Cosby, kids up to age 10 would probably accept the counsel offered by this volume and others in the series.)
Book Description
Michael Reilly has introduced a new game to Little Bill and his friends. You get twelve chances to say something mean to another kid--and whoever comes up with the biggest insult is the winner. Insults start flying: "Jose hops with the frogs in science lab!" "Andrew eats frogs for dinner!" "Little Bill shoots baskets like a girl!"Little Bill tries to think of really mean things to say in retaliation. But Dad teaches him a strategy that enables Little Bill to save face while remaining the nice kid that he really is!

Cosby tells "stories about situations children often face.".......2007-03-15
The Meanest Thing To Say is not about saying mean things back to mean people. And it isn't even about mean people. What it IS about is children learning self-control, level-headedness and heart. When the new kid, Michael, calls Little Bill names, and says he has to think of the meanest things to say back the next day, Bill is frustrated and anxious. This comes up at home and his dad tells him to just say, "So?" to everything. Little Bill does this and it halts Michael. It takes two people to fight. But the moral of the story doesn't stop here. Bill observes Michael is a new student and maybe just needs a friend. So he invites him to play basketball with him and they become friends.
Unfortunately it is reality that children can be very mean and hurtful. As parents, we need to teach our children how to handle bullies and it's equally as important to teach them not to BE a bully. Also, just ignoring mean actions and words doesn't always work. Everyone has good in them and we all, ages 2-102 need to offer kindness instead of anger. Great job, Cosby! Thank you and please keep writing. Peace & Soar!o8E
LEARN HOW TO TALK TO PEOPLE.......2006-11-10
THIS BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT LEARNING TOOL. IT IS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT AND I AM SURE IT WILL BE READ AND EACH CHILD WILL LEARN FROM IT!
Great lesson.......2006-03-16
I just got this book yesterday for my son who just turned 3 years old. He really enjoyed it and after reading it, he kept asking me to read it over. He was very interested because he started asking questions at the end. He just started preschool and I wanted to introduce him to possible situations he might go through while in school. This story gives a great lesson on how to handle a situation when someone says something mean to you. My son also enjoyed it because the situation takes place in school and at a basketball court, which he can relate to because he started school and he loves to play basketball.
Secret Weapon Against Bullies.......2006-03-03
I was looking for a book to help my 9 year-old deal with other kids who say cruel and demeaning things. My son and I sat down and read the book together and then discussed how saying "so" when mean things are said takes away the bullies power. We decided that "so" was his new secret weapon.
My son was so excited when the very next day at school he used his secret weapon and it worked. He has also shared the book with a few of his classmates and it has helped them too.
GREAT BOOK!
Excellent Message -.......2006-02-22
An excellent message and a good chapter book for those readers who are starting to gain confidence.
Book Description
"Whatever" is now the password into civilized youth culture. Alarming numbers of Christians eighteen to twenty-five years old believe that there is no such thing as absolute truth. Yet, Ryan Dobson proclaims, we can't even function if we believe that everything is relative. In his first book, the impassioned youth speaker explains God's establishment of absolutes, using relevant examples to awaken Christians to the world's desperate hunger for absolute truth -- and the church's duty to proclaim it.
OUR GENERATION IS BEING DESTROYED BY RAMPANT TOLERANCE.
Somebody’s cheating at school?
âWell, that’s his business.â
Your roommate wants an abortion?
âI wouldn’t do it, but hey, it’s her life.â
Accepting everything means you believe in nothing. When it comes to right and wrong, sitting on the fence won’t get youâor the people you loveâanywhere. Passiveness is not love. Love is getting in people’s face and telling them the truth.
Finally, someone has the courage to point out that some ideas are simply stupid. Honest and unflinching, Ryan Dobson will show you how to back up your beliefs and be intolerantâin love.

Shallow, quick and to the point... and then?.......2007-09-20
I highly recommend this book for someone with a short attention span, little or no training in philosophy and has trouble reading in-depth material. Pretty much a short read (took about an 40 minutes) that offers introductory ideas of the very basics of apologetics with a modern theme that appeals to teenagers.
I think this would be a half decent book for 12-15 year olds, maybe even some 16 year olds but that is about as high as I would go before someone would be thinking "and then...?"
The stylized text and tone of the author had me thinking he was a 20-something writing verses a 40-something year old, I will give him props for having a message that reaches the youth but I would expect more from such a book with a engaging title.
A Call to All Christians.......2007-03-30
Christians in this country are so persecuted. As Pat Robertson said, "Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history." Liberals are sending Christians to concentration camps, not allowing them to get married, making them eat at seperate restaurants, and enslaving them. The Horor! Ryan Dobson, you go put those hippy-liberals back where they belong.
(just in case anyone was wondering, this was meant to be sarcastic)
Good, but not the greatest........2006-11-01
First, I can see how someone who is not an evangelical will have a problem with this book and the things that Dobson has to say. In fact, he says in the beginning of the book that he knows he will "lose some readers" because of the truths that he expounds on in this book. Is the book a great read? - well, yes and no. Keep in mind that the target audience for this book is young people, I would guess teens and early twenties. For someone older, or more mature, then I am sure that a book by the elder Dobson (Christian author James Dobson is his dad) would be a better read. Yes, Ryan Dobson can come across as intolerant to someone who does not take the time to read the whole book and understand what he is saying. Yes, it can seem slightly annoying that he (and some of his friends) seem to have "perfect" lives. However, in the whole scheme of this book, I think he presents a down to earth and "real" message to today's young evangelicals. I think this would be a great book for a youth group or youth Bible study to read and discuss together.
Jesus Christ..........2006-10-10
...would loathe this book. Its message is the polar opposite of the love, acceptance and forgiveness that Christ personified with His life and death.
"One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important? Jesus answered, `The first is, "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength." The second is this, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." There is no other commandment greater than these.'
-- Mark 12:28-31
"You shall love your neighbour as yourself" - is it sinking in yet? Dobson and his followers are *defying Christ*, not following Him, so I do not consider them Christians.
Be Intolerant.......2006-09-15
Must read for any one with young children. Great thought starter for those seeking the Truth.
Book Description
Seminary professor, radio broadcaster, and former pastor Steve Brown is tired. He confesses, "I'm tired of glib answers to hard questions, irrelevant 'God words' and stark, cold foundations on which no house has ever been built." So he set out to revitalize his faith by reexamining his thoughts and his faith. And he shares his invigorating discoveries with readers. A potent tonic for those whose faith feels flat, What Was I Thinking? fully engages the heart, mind, and soul.
Customer Reviews:
Of all things, you're thanking your captor.......2007-06-06
If you've ever heard the "Key Life" radio program, then you've probably heard the rich, authoritative, made-for-radio voice of Steve Brown, who is also a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, where his rich, authoritative, made-for-seminary voice has dispensed wisdom and knowledge to students for a number of years now --- and to his own congregation and countless audiences at seminars and conferences
Or has it? Well, yes and no. Yes, a great deal of what his voice has dispensed could be described as "wisdom and knowledge." But a lot of what he dispensed was, as he puts it, "irrelevant God words." An older and wiser Brown admits: "I was wrong. I got the words right, but I missed the tune...if we get the words right but can't sing the tune, we miss the grandeur of the song." He's singing a new song these days, one based on a faith that is "far more radical and far less cerebral" than he once thought it was.
That's good news for the reading public, because Brown felt compelled to set the record straight about his skewed way of thinking in print. Ever the entertaining author, Brown is at his best when he's vulnerable and self-deprecating, and with a title like WHAT WAS I THINKING? you can be assured that he is, indeed, at his best here.
Each chapter title betrays Brown's former faulty way of thinking. In "The Holy Spirit Is Working in a Lot More Places Than I Thought He Was," for example, he encourages Christians to quit limiting their lives to involvement in "religious" activities and entertainment and to instead engage the wider culture around them. The activity of the Holy Spirit, he writes, is not limited to Christians and the church. "It isn't where we go, what we see, and what we hear that determines what is appropriate and right for the believer. It's what we bring to where we go, to what we see, and to what we hear that determines what is appropriate and right for us as believers," Brown believes.
Individual chapters address Brown's once-misguided views of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, supernatural warfare, people ("a lot worse than I thought they were"), people again ("a lot better than I thought they were"), self-righteousness, obedience, love and the world; the chapter on self-righteousness alone is worth the price of the book, and then you get all those other wonderful chapters as a bonus. He concludes with this chapter: "Things Will Work Out a Lot Better Than I Thought They Would."
Throughout, Brown reveals his special brand of humor. This is a guy with a doctorate who teaches seminarians things like "how to develop a Christian mean streak" and "how not to be a weenie"; who obsesses over his hybrid Honda Accord and whether it's symbolic of his judgmentalism; who comes right out and says he likes to sin; and who admits that Monday morning is depressing because that's when he has to pray. You just have to keep reading when a well-known, well-respected Christian leader writes stuff like that.
"Keep reading" is what you'll likely do once you start, because Brown has this charming way of captivating his readers and holding them hostage. Before you realize what just happened to you, you've finished reading --- and of all things, you're thanking your captor.

Great Read.......2007-02-06
I have read several of Steve Brown's books and have always enjoyed them. This one though really exceeded my expectations. He asks himself many of the same questions I have found myself asking after I passed the AARP age. His forthrightness and honesty was like a fresh drink of water. I have since purchased and given away several more copies to my friends and family.
Superb.......2007-01-05
This is a wonderful book. Steve Brown is a very gifted communicator and he does a wonderful job of providing an encouraging vision of the grace of God in this book.
The Truth About Being a Christian.......2006-11-14
Steve's book is the most honest appraisal of the Christian life that I have seen - short of the Bible itself. He writes in an entertaining manner, and the book is easily read and understood, even aloud. In one word, 'awesome' comes to mind as a description.
What Was I Thinking? Things I've Learned Since I Knew It All.......2006-11-10
Very enlightening book.

NECESSARY GUIDE FOR PRE-TEEN BOYS.......2005-10-02
Bill Zimmerman, the author, was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his writings for young people about current events and issues they face. He is former editor of Newsday, the nation's largest newspaper, and author of over a dozen books. 100 Things Guys Need To Know is an EXCELLENT cartoon styled book for pre-adolescent and adolescent boys to help them cope with the changes in their bodies, emotions, and relationships in a positive way. Nothing is more important than helping a youth know that making wise choices amidst peer pressure and internal quandaries is a good thing. This book is the perfect tool to help any boy (ages 9 - 13) thrive in his teen years and understand what is happening to himself internally and physically as well as socially. The book teaches good skills and positive choices and healthy habits in six categories: Self, Body and Mind, Family, School, Relationships, Future. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It is written to the youngster himself and is easy enough to understand, and the cartoons help the boy identify with situations common to every teen. The book is also an excellent one to read with your children to open conversation about issues you may not know he is dealing with at school or other areas of his life. A WONDERFUL book to give any boy you know, love, and want to make wise choices in order to navigate the turbulent teen years successfully and create a happy, future for himself. read and pray to remember what you've read.......2007-01-22
In just the last five years I've heard about a number of miracles. And the details of what God did in people's lives have gotten hazy sometimes though with something to jog my memory I always come back to, "o, yes, that was amazing." How this evangelist is experiencing God is a gift to carry around with you inside the day as you plan or seek to hear your next step. The Holy Spirit led me to this book to give away but first to open it and...if we ask God to do even greater through us and for His glory, and we want to want what He wants, awesome awesome life is coming towards us for us and for more than we can imagine. This is what I received from Even Greater. And praise God for the vessel He has molded called Brother Bonnke for love of Africa, and for His love of each and every one of us.
