First published in 1950 and revised over time, Italy's bestselling culinary "bible," Il Cucchiaio d'argento, is now available in English. The Silver Spoon boasts over 2,000 recipes and arrives in a handsome (and weighty) photo-illustrated edition complete with two ribbon markers. Its chapters make every menu stop from sauces and antipasti through cheese dishes and sweets, with many standout dishes like Genoese Pesto Minestrone, Eggplant and Ricotta Lasagna, Pork Shoulder with Prunes, and Chocolate and Pear Tart; the book also includes a number of "eccentricities," like sections on patty shells and bean sprouts, surely not an Italian dining staple. Meant to be inclusive, the book also offers a wide range of non-Italian, mostly French formulas, supplemented by a few "exotic" and other non-traditional entries.
Though the recipe range is vast, it must be said that American readers, anxious to cook this authentic fare, will encounter problems. Translating a cookbook from one language to another requires cultural recasting as well as word substitution, and in this the book's editors have been lax. The problems include non-idiomatic usages, for example, calling for "pans" when "pots" is needed; awkward conversions from the metric system, resulting in requirements like eleven ounces of zite; and the inclusion of ingredients like cavolo nero (Tuscan cabbage), tope (a Mediterranean fish), and pancetta copatta (ham-stuffed pancetta) that are unavailable here and for which no alternatives are suggested. In addition, the recipes themselves are often insufficiently specific or detailed--even seasoned bakers will pause before cake recipes that don't specify pan size--and can also lack yields. Space considerations have also meant printing recipes in single, one-column paragraphs, which can make place-finding while cooking difficult, and there are typos and other goofs (one recipe for four specifies six cups of sliced scallions; another requires that a marinade be "stirred frequently for five to twelve hours").
All this said, many cooks--casual and serious alike--as well as cookbook collectors, will want The Silver Spoon. It's an essential document of the Italian table and as such a classic. Indeed, it would be hard to imagine a complete cookbook library without the book--a welcome evocation of a much-beloved repertoire by those who know it best. --Arthur Boehm

Great cookbook but you have to make local ingredient substitutes. Many innovative and tasty recipies. An excellent source for explanations of foods and spices.Italian like you've never seen italian..........BillKenney
A really nice book - some of the criticisms are off........2007-10-10
A few people criticized the book in earlier reviews for not providing enough detailed information about how to cook certain recipes. I wanted to point out that this was probably a cultural difference, one that Americans should just get used to if they really want to understand Italian cooking. To show that it really is a cultural difference, i point to two pieces of evidence.
(1) The book itself discusses how they had to increase detail in recipe-presentation for American tastes. That said, you shouldn't complain that its too vague - because this is just how Italians do recipes. (Chances are, they allow for a lot more variation in the outcome than Americans do, btw... if you watch Mario Batali, he notes that every Italian mother has her own version of each dish). The extreme specification of every last detail is a desire of American home cooks.
(2) If you look at the recipes by famous chefs at the end of the book, you'll notice a really funny difference. All of the chefs who are FROM ITALY provide directions for recipes that take up only 1/2 a page each. All of the chefs who are NOT FROM ITALY provide directions for recipes that take up the whole page. (The ones from the U.S. - Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali are the best examples of this). This should be a good sign to everyone that it's a cultural difference that you should try and co-opt rather than reject, if you're trying to understand Italian cooking as a whole.
A culinary masterpiece.......2007-08-28
This book is a treasure trove of delicious treats. The overwhelming number of recipes is countered by an efficient cataloging system, making it simple to find precisely what you wanted. The addition of famous chefs' sample menus is an added bonus that makes this book truly unique. I highly recommend The Silver Spoon to anyone who wants to explore the delights of the kitchen: from novice to pro, this book takes the cake.
Excellent, Italian Betty Crocker on Speed,Extrememly comprehensive ... but..........2007-07-18
Great book, really excellent recipes applicable to the beginner up to advanced cooks. However, the book really doesnt describe techniques for preparing the food which are really needed in the american market. As an example there are several recipes for squid and cuttlefish but no cleaning techniques which can complicated. I highly reccomend this book as a standard part of your cooking library, it is truly a goldmine of recipes, sort of an Italian Betty Crocker cookbook on speed.
Great collection - a few quibbles.......2007-07-01
This is a mammoth collection and many recipes sound terrific. A few problems, though.
What REGION claims the recipe? Italians are tied to their family regions. This information belongs in the recipes.
AMERICAN VERSION OF ITALIAN INGREDIENTS. What type chilies or lettuce, for example, would make the recipes as close to authentic as possible?
PICTURES. There are beautiful pictures of prepared recipes. There are no captions for the pictures, and sometimes, the reader can't guess which recipe on the facing page is pictured.
I'm enjoying using and reading this book, but I wish the publishers had done a little more editing for the U. S. market.

A Hit!.......2006-11-08
I read this book aloud to my class of 4th graders and they loved it! This book had humor, suspense, and positive messages. It also gave me the opportunity to teach a little about the history of the Gold Rush. A definite hit!
A good supplement to the Gold Rush unit.......2006-10-26
I definitely enjoyed reading By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman, and I think it would be a great supplementary source for teachers to use in the Gold Rush unit. This book is a ficitional story, but it is full of historical accounts related to the Gold Rush era. The main characters is Jack and Praiseworthy. They set out on a journey in search of striking rich when Jack's aunt became penniless. The two main characters went on a wild and exciting adventures where they encountered many life-learning lessons about themselves and the historical background of that time. This book is definitely a good resource to use in and outside of the classroom, because it provides historical information along with an inspiring story about friendships.
It had tons of action!.......2006-10-18
I liked By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman because it has a lot action. It's set in 1849. The main characters names are Jack and Praiseworthy. The book starts on a ship that's racing another ship to California. Jack hides a pig so the cook can't make Sunday dinner out of the pig. Jack and Praiseworthy get robbed several times. They go to the mining camps and try to strike it rich. I like the part where Jack and Praiseworthy go propecting. I recommend this book to ages 9 and up. If you like adventure and the Gold Rush, you would like this book.
"I ground in a few acorns for flavor.".......2006-08-18
BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is written for younger readers but is a delightful light read even for adults, who will get through this book in one sitting.
The story concerns young Jack Flagg of Boston and his faithful manservant Praiseworthy who, upon discovering that Jack's foster Aunt Arabella is virtually penniless, decide to set out for the California Gold Rush and save the family from poverty. Along the way, Jack and Praiseworthy have numerous adventures (they are forced to stow away aboard ship, they run afoul of the highwayman Cut-Eye Higgins, Praiseworthy, a model of rectitude, becomes renowned in the gold fields as "Bullwhip," the man who can win any fight, and they strike it rich), through all of which they persevere, largely because of their wit, their intelligence, and their reliance on each other. BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is a wonderful lesson in the nature of true friendship.
A fun story with a fine sense of historical place and memorably colorful characters, BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is a story for children of all ages.
Great book!.......2006-07-18
By the Great Horn Spoon! is a wonderful and entertaining book for ALL ages. This book can be used in the classroom when covering the Gold Rush period or it can be read for leisure. The story is about a young lad and his dreams and quest for gold. He has a noble cause and he learns valuable lessons from an unexpected source. I would definitely highly recommend this book!

Book Description
A parent's guide to raising financially responsible children in an age of unprecedented wealth
It is natural as parents that we want to give our children the best of everything. And in an age of unprecedented wealth and easy credit, upper- and middle-income parents can indulge that urge like never before. Yet, you have become alarmed over the impact this newfound affluence may be having on your children. You fear that through your generosity you are training your children to be greedy, selfish spendthrifts. The first parenting guide to focus exclusively on this increasingly sensitive topic, Silver Spoon Kids was coauthored by a psychotherapist who counsels people with money-related emotional problems and a lawyer specializing in estate planning.
Drawing upon their experiences as members of the renowned NYU Family Wealth Institute, they tell you how to talk to kids about money, how to teach them to handle it responsibly, and how to instill in your kids a sense of giving to their communities.
Customer Reviews:
How to help your children avoid entitlement.......2007-07-21
If you teach your children how to be financially responsible between the ages of 4 and 18, you have a much higher probability of having them not back at home living with you between the ages of 22 and 35.
Required Reading For Parents.......2007-05-12
I was introduced to this book while attending a financial seminar concerning the transfer of money to children. I read the book and passed it on to my children to use as a guide in bringing up their children. Money should give children an advantage to become happy and productive citizens. The sudden acquisition of money without adequate training in the use of wealth can have disastrous results as witnessed by the numerous sad stories of lottery winners. This book gives parents a guide on how to introduce children into the acquisition and proper use of money at an early age. Following the authors' advice can help parents raise financially responsible children.
Not for anyone who still works for a living.......2005-11-16
You do not *need* to give your children an allowance to teach them how to handle money. Really. The author's position is that you simply have to--and it makes you wonder if she also thinks it is okay to experiment with drugs in order to learn how to use them the "right" way. Just as you can educate children about the dangers of drugs without giving them any, you can also educate children about how to spend money wisely. One way is to take them grocery shopping with you, for example, and let them help you with calculating the best values for the money you have.
Others have said this book is good for those with middle class incomes. I disagree. If there will be any possible future scenario where your child will have to work for a living in any capacity, they need to know that money is NOT just handed to them, and that money belongs to the person who earned it (and the spouse, in community property states), NOT the children. This means that children need to learn that some things you do without compensation as being part of the family (chores), and other things you do in exchange for money (outside jobs or special jobs around the house) or something else (bartering). In real life, money is not just handed to you, unless you're on welfare. Someone has/had to earn that money at some point in time, and just handing money to someone will never educate them as to how to actually earn it.
This book might be okay for someone looking to leave their child a huge trust fund, where he or she just lives off the interest, but not for people trying to help their children truly make their own way in life.
Read this book along with your Dr. Spock!!.......2002-05-04
I work in the field of philanthropy have hosted many workshops on issues of children and money. The four hours I spent reading this book were the most educational and fruitful four hours I have ever spent on issues of how to raise children!! Whether your family is middle class or affluent, you will benefit from this book. In my opinion, the lessons offered by the Gallos on values and raising children go far beyond issues of money. I believe it is really a guide to raising well rounded and socially responsible children. I know I will return again and again to the chapters in this book both personally and professionally. Buy this book and read it!!
Practical Read for Parents.......2002-04-16
Silver Spoon Kids offers practical, hands-on tips for parents raising kids. Financial issues can be difficult to address and this book offers guidelines to meet just those needs. One need not be an expert in the field to grasp the concepts presented - they are perfect for all to understand and utilize. This book is a great resource and will be helpful to many.

Customer Reviews:
The go-to treatise for raising children.......2007-08-03
This book has been the go-to treatise for raising children since 1990. Dr. Hausner's contemporary message applies to all families seeking assistance with the issues related to childrearing. A great read and very insightful.
A great book for parents at any income level!.......2005-02-20
IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR CHILD'S MOTIVATION AND SELF-ESTEEM, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.
My husband and I, parents of three children (ages 7, 6, and 2) attended one of Dr. Hausner's speaking engagements in Coral Gables, Florida, and we were impressed by both her relaxed yet captivating speaking style as well as the content of what she had to say (definately (...) material). We were each given a copy of Children of Paradise, and I set to reading it right away. I am now on amazon to order 5 copies to pass along to my close parenting friends regardless of their income level. I plan to keep my highlighted, marked-up copy by my nightstand for easy reference for a long time. While the book contains some insightful strategies for wealthy families in handling inheritance and trusts - issues that are not present in most families in America - this book also provides some of the best parenting advice I have read regarding effective communication with your children, consistent discipline, and issues of control. In Children of Paradise, Dr. Hausner - without blame - discusses character traits of successful, "type A" personality parents and how these traits which have made them successful in their careers do not translate into successful parenting, but rather, can result in lowering a child's self esteem and motivation. I would argue that the same qualities can be found in parents of any income level coping with the competition and stress of daily life with children and careers during a time when we tend to demand perfection of ourselves and others. Dr. Hausner offers specific examples and techniques to improve how parents speak with and listen to their children - at any age - including teenagers. I have started to change the way I communicate with my children and I see results. In appropriate situations, I have stopped imposing strict punishments to control their behavior in favor of allowing my children to experience the natural consequences of their own failure to do what they need to do. (Not when it involves personal safety - obviously.) I am trying to stop telling them what to do most of the time (or just doing it for them) in the interest of expediency. I already see how my children are becoming more responsible with these changes and more confident. In short, this is a terrific book for any educated parent - career or stay at home, middle or upper class. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Children of Paradise.......2000-04-01
In recent history with so much instant wealth created from techno-stocks, it gives great insights on how to handle wealth in your family. Wealth may solve some problems, but creates others for families and this book gives solutions to avoid the pitfalls. It is helpful in keeping children of wealth grounded. Lee Hausner has worked with many wealthy families in the Beverly Hills School District and has first-hand knowledge in dealing with the issues surrounding children and wealth.

Spoon River Anthology(signet classics).......2007-03-14
This is incredile writing, Masters ability to give his characters a voice that reachs ones heart and mind simply amazing. Ernest Hyde, is an excellent example of this as well as Amanda Barker,Yee Bow and many others. These are the names of some the voices that Masters sets free. There dry innocent voices are oddly humorous and this is what i find the most refreshing. This is free verse at its finest.
Spoon River flows through humanity.......2006-06-29
Masters' Spoon River Anthology is as poignant today as when it was written. Part glimpse of history, part poetic essay on the eternal frailties of the human animal, the epitaphs are riveting from first to last. Read it. Then get a spoken word recording. Then read it again. You'll find these characters live on.
American Writing At Its Best.......2005-11-13
There IS an actual Spoon River in Fulton County, IL but no town by that name. Masters was speaking about that area because he was writing about what he knew. Like any great literature, it transcends time and place to have more universal meaning. Some characters are small town folk, others aspired to grow beyond and were thwarted by circumstance, while still others grew beyond Spoon River and were brought back home from their travels for eternal rest. "All, all are sleeping on the hill". Each character narrates his or her own brief story in a free verse poem, one per page. Some stories intersect as characters mention each other. It's interesting to cross reference characters in this regard. Sometimes the compliment of mention isn't returned. Upon first inspection, this might seem to be a rather morbid format. However, the characters speak more about their lives and human struggles than they do about death. Theirs are timeless tales about joy, accomplishment, pain, betrayal, discovery, loneliness and atonement.
This book is a real classic. It was given to me for my seventeenth birthday and I've collected several different volumes of it since then including one signed by the author. I think the dramatic format might still catch the attention of alot of teenagers and give them pause to reflect upon the deeper meanings in life. It's one of those must read's for anyone looking to read the American Classics.
We Are The Dead Of Spoon River..........2005-09-17
Upon its release Edgar Lee Masters' collection of free verse poems must have shaken the literary universe. In an era when the mores of polite Victorianism were still lingering in an America concerned with all things proper, Masters dared pen a book in which the dead of a small Midwestern town lie not in a state of reservation before Christian resurrection, but in a condition of stasis, ruminating on their lives and speaking with candor on all they may have done. The dead who speak from their graves in these wondrous poems reveal their secrets, their unfulfilled dreams, their disapprobation at humanity's conduct. The dead are to varying degrees wise, ironic, witty, bitter, content, confused, and moralistic. They have regrets, they mock the values of we who are living, they seethe with longing, they confess universal truths at long last, they await they know not what, the arrival of eternity or a continuation of their suspended state of evaluation, in conditions of calm, content, fright, or regretless joy. There is one thing none of those who have passed away from the streets of Spoon River to its hallowed acre on the hill, are and that is quiet.
One of a dozen or so American poetical achievements that most fully justifies our nation's pride in its own literary accomplishments.
Very interesting.......2005-08-27
This has lots of background and biographical information. Plus it includes other materials. Well done. I was a little disappointed in the quality of the paper.

Book Description
Anne Perry’s bestselling Victorian novels offer readers an elixir as addictively rich as Devonshire cream or English ale–enticing millions into a literary world almost as real as the original. While flower sellers, costermongers, shopkeepers, and hansom drivers ply their trades, the London police watch over all. Or so people believe. . . .
Early one morning, Thomas Pitt, dauntless mainstay of the Special Branch, is summoned to Long Spoon Lane, where anarchists are plotting an attack. Bombs explode, destroying the homes of many poor people. After a chase, two of the culprits are captured and the leader is shot . . . but by whom?
As Pitt delves into the case, he finds that there is more to the terrorism than the destructive gestures of misguided idealists. The police are running a lucrative protection racket, and clues suggest that Inspector Wetron of Bow Street is the mastermind. As the shadowy leader of the Inner Circle, Wetron is using his influence with the press to whip up fears of more attacks–and to rush a bill through Parliament that would severely curtail civil liberties. This would make him the most powerful man in the country.
To defeat Wetron, Pitt finds that he must run in harness with his old enemy, Sir Charles Voisey, and the unlikely allies are joined by Pitt’s clever wife, Charlotte, and her great aunt, Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould. Can they prevail? As they strive to prevent future destruction, nothing less than the fate of the British Empire hangs in precarious balance.
From the first sentence to the last, Long Spoon Lane is a miracle of suspense, of plot and counterplot, bluff and counterbluff, in a take-no-prisoners battle between good and evil. It is possibly the very best of all the wonderful Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels.

Bugged by Tellman.......2007-05-04
This intricate novel with its bombings and Parliamentary debates about increased police power have obvious echoes of our own time. (Patriot Act, anyone?). I liked the theme of Pitt's having to cooperate with archenemy Voisey, but Thomas comes perilously close to James Bond territory in his miraculous escape. What bothered me was Tellman. In the previous book he was Inspector; now he is Sergeant. Did Wetron bust him or is this just sloppy editing? Inquiring minds want to know. And I couldn't believe Wetron trusted him as far as he did Still, an absorbing read.
Not my favorite Anne Perry book.......2007-01-10
I usually love Anne Perry Books. I eat them up as she turns them out no matter which series is published, but I couldn't wait to finish this one. It just wasn't interesting. The usual historical data was prevelant, but the mystery itself left something to be desired. Kind of boring and I was glad to be finished so that I could move on to the next book.
Good...but what's with the editing?.......2006-08-18
Having caught a second wind, Perry continues what she started in Seven Dials by taking familiar characters to new and exciting places (psychologically speaking.) She's really revitalized the series. However, I wonder if she's switched editors with this one, and for the worse. I noticed a large number of typos and either clunky or downright erroneous wordings that never existed in the previous Pitt novels. It was distracting enough for me to knock one star off my review.
Past Meets Present in Another Anne Perry Gem .......2006-07-29
Long Spoon Lane: A Charlotte and Thomas Pitt Novel, by Anne Perry was another excellent mystery set in Perry's evocative Victorian setting. The mystery in this novel was not of the "knock your socks off who would have ever thought it" type. It was, rather, a very evenly paced novel in which many of the developments involved terrorism and the government's response to the terrorists' acts. It was very interesting to read about a piece of legislation that some of the characters supported. The legislation involved giving the police easier rules and access to search people and their homes. The obvious allusion to America's Patriot Act and the debate it has spawned is an excellent piece of the overall picture.
This book focused on Thomas primarily, and his relationship with one of his true enemies. His Professor Moriarty if you will.
I recommend this book and give it a solid and well deserved 4 out of 5 stars.
Disappointing!.......2006-07-09
I've just finished this book and found it rather annoying. Though I have enjoyed the Pitt series along the way, it seems that Anne Perry plays fast and loose with historical facts and, in this story, contrives an entirely unlikely key to resolve the plot.
Although no date for the story is given it appears to be set about 1880. The fact that Pitt and other characters have telephones at home, when the telephone was first invented in 1876 and not in general use until much later, is one problem. Another is a reference to someone's having seen another character's photograph in the newspaper, when photos were not used in newspapers until considerably later.
The chief bad guy in this story, police inspector Wetron, supposedly knows that one of his underlings is trying to catch him in illegal acts. So Perry has him leave a clue in his office that will lead the underling to his home, where apparently Wetron is planning on catching him. But the clue he leaves in his office is the real thing - a link to his criminal activity. How dumb can that be? And then he allows the underling to spirit him off on a wild goose chase in the middle of the night while his house is searched. The ridiculousness of this ruined the story for me.

Lots of people know the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle," but has anyone ever thought about what happens each night after it's read? The dish runs away with the spoon, and, presumably, they come back later, otherwise the rhyme couldn't go on without them. But one night, when the dish and spoon take off, they simply don't return! The fiddle-playing cat, laughing dog (who turns out to be quite a grump when he's not playing his part), and the sleepy, moon-hopping cow set out to search for their missing friends. Along the way they encounter Little Boy Blue, the spider from "Little Miss Muffet," Humpty Dumpty's repairman, and a big bad wolf. But will they catch up with the dish and the spoon before the next reading? And can all of them dodge the dangers of an after-hours, fairy-tale world?
Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel pick up where the nursery rhyme leaves off in this witty, entertaining romp. Young readers will "laugh to see such sport," as characters from fairy tales and Mother Goose mingle, make puns, and occasionally join forces to find the wandering tableware. The hilarious facial expressions and lively scenes by Janet Stevens invite readers to stay a while on each page. Stevens is the author and illustrator of the Caldecott Honor Book Tops and Bottoms. She and her sister-collaborator have previously teamed up on Cook-a-Doodle-Doo!, Shoe Town, and Tumbleweed Stew. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Every night the rhyme gets read. Every night Dish and Spoon run away. And every night they return--until tonight!
Where can Dish and Spoon be? The rhyme can't go on without them, so Cat, Cow, and Dog set out to search for their missing friends. But where to start? Should they go north? East? Northeast? They'll just have to read Fork's map, ask directions, and try not to get lost in Little Boy Blue's haystack or under Miss Muffet's tuffet or in Big Bad Wolf's kitchen--"FEE, FI, FO . . ." Oh no. Could that be the giant?

One of the best children's books .......2007-07-15
This is one of the best children's books I have ever read! The author does a great job of using multiple nursery rhymes and the book has some great play on words. This is a must-have in our library and I have also given it as presents to family members and teachers.
Awesome!.......2007-04-14
We LOVE this book! It is such a fun story, however, it goes beyond fun. It's has wonderful educational value. It has a map that my child loves to use while reading the book. She's learned to navigate the map on her own. It's wonderful. She sees all of the little details (like the sheep costume hanging in the Big Bad Wolf's house..."wolf in sheep's clothing"). We got it at the library & renewed it 2 times. That means it's getting purchased now! I don't want to deprive other children of reading this book!
Rhyme and Pun-ishment: And the DISH Ran Away with the SPOON.......2007-03-11
Colourful characters, corny humour and a considerable amount of complaining have made this collision of nursery rhymes a favourite adventure at our house.
This book ran away with me........2006-11-10
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. My kids giggled through the whole thing and asked me to read it over and over again. It's a great book for any age child. The younger kids can relate to the nursery rhyme connections and the older ones get some of the subtle humor.
* Anthropomorphic Dish, Spoon, THE WHOLE NINE YARDS ! *.......2006-06-20
Hey, diddle, diddle: What a 'Tall Tale' this is !
In southern Indiana we have been celebrating such stories at a 3rd Annual TELL-OFF. The Stevens' sisters would fit right in, along with their brother Jack (GREAT PORTRAIT, that!) who plays the role of "fixer-upper" when the crazed DISH cracks up.
Puns and "literary" allusions make this an entertaining read-aloud for adults who will doubtless 'catch on' to more than their young listeners.
The authors embroider the original Mother Goose rhyme & the story moves briskly - - halting along the way while its sleepy characters consider their next moves in looking for the missing DISH & SPOON. Janet Stevens has provided wonderful facial expressions for her characters, PLUS athletic bods! Amusing and colorful (Reviewer mcHAIKU is envious of the FORK's Hawaiian shirt), the characters sure sound like "down home folks" don't they? And we look forward to Stevens & Crummels' next collaboration.

Book Description
A practical guide that offers parents valuable advice on issues related to kids and money — no matter what their age or stage in life.
Customer Reviews:
Great book with excellent ideas!!!.......2007-08-23
This book is easy to understand and actually kind of scary how it relates to your own life. It's a book that all parents should read to help their children with life in general. You don't have to be wealthy to read this book....it's for all incomes. You don't have to be wealthy to have a spoiled child that expects too much either. Being a single parent, I'm grateful there are books to give advice on ways to help your child grow up to be responsible. It's common sense really....but to have it in black and white and know your not the only one with issues is comforting. Thanks so much!
How Much Help Did Mr. Buffone Really Get?.......2004-12-23
Mr. Buffone criticizes parents who financially help their children but I wonder, did Mr. Buffone's parents pay for his high priced college degree? Did they lend him money for his down payment on his first home purchase? Always look deeper than what you see on the surface.
Choking on the Silver Spoon.......2004-06-04
I highly recommend this book for parents who love there kids enough to work at raising them to be productive and successful individuals in a "give me" society. This book is an excellent resource for families of silver spooners as well as anyone raising children in a society that encourages getting something for nothing. I have a group of friends who are reading this book in a book club and discussing it weekly.
with a spoonful of humor too!.......2004-05-05
How do rich kids get to be such brats? Have you ever wanted to explain to your kids (& yourself!) what money is & is not, & what it can & cannot do? Then CHOKING ON THE SILVER SPOON is a good place to start.
Dr. Gary Buffone, advisor to the affluent, has written a readable & engaging guide which covers:
When Wealth Cripples: The Monetarily Mangled; Why Parents Worry; Recognizing the Silver Spoon Syndrome; Is Your Child a Silver-Spooner?; The Rising Tide of Wealth in America, & much more.
He explains why Money Can't Buy Them Love & how to go about Curing the Plague of Prosperity. & then he sets forth The Five Immutable Laws of Financial Parenting:
-- of Necessity
-- of Loving Limits
-- of Reciprocity
-- of Fiscal Responsibility
-- of Example.
Rebeccasreads highly recommends CHOKING ON THE SILVER SPOON for all parents (rich & not-so-rich) who want to raise their children with a better grasp of what money means in the scheme of things, & how having it affects your life.
A primer for passing down financial survival skills.......2004-04-05
Choking On The Silver Spoon: Keeping Your Kids Healthy, Wealthy And Wise In A Land Of Plenty by Gary Buffone (a practicing licensed psychologist and Director, The Family Business Century, Byron Harless Consulting, Jacksonville, Florida) is a very practical and accessibly written parenting guide meant for parents everywhere, whether raising toddlers, dealing with difficult teenagers, or keeping in touch with their adult children. Choking On The Silver Spoon deals with the very serious problem of handling children and money matters in a fair and balanced manner that will not "spoil" children, but rather teach them the true value of hard-earned wages, give them initiative to achieve, and help them better succeed financially when on their own. Of special note are the "five laws": The Law Of Necessity; The Law Of Loving Limits; The Law Of Reciprocity; The Law Of Fiscal Responsibility; and The Law of Example. This is superbly presented and highly recommended primer for passing down financial survival skills and endearing a healthy respect for work and the fruits of honest labor.

Fans of the fractured fairy tale genre will be very interested to learn the behind-the-scenes, never-before-told back story of the romance between the dish and the spoon of "Hey Diddle Diddle" fame. We all know that the dish ran away with the spoon after the cow jumped over the moon, but who could have envisioned the life they went on to lead? Winding up in New York City, the pair quickly finds fame and fortune in a vaudeville act. Unfortunately, like so many before them, the glory goes to their head and the money drains out of their pockets. Turning to a life of crime, the Dish and the Spoon learn the hard way that crime doesn't pay.
Mini Grey (The Very Smart Pea and the Princess-to-Be) pens a hilarious and romantic tale, accompanied by zany illustrations set in early 20th century Manhattan. The happily-ever-after ending will bring a smile to every face, human and utensil alike. --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Mini Grey’s spin on the nursery rhyme classic “Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle” is a love story of sorts that starts when “the dish ran away with the spoon.” In the midst of the Great Depression, Dish and Spoon become rich and famous vaudeville stars—until their taste for the high life puts them in debt to a gang of sharp and shady characters (depicted as evil knives). The cinematic presentation—with a touch of Bonnie and Clyde, a dash of “The Perils of Pauline”—proves that crime doesn’t pay and love conquers all. A visual treat with new details to discover again and again, here is absurd good fun for the whole family.

Going back in time to children's rhyme and tune... from a [...] Reviewer..........2006-12-17
"Hey diddle, diddle, The cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon... and the dish ran away with the spoon..." Have you ever wondered what happened to the 'Dish and the Spoon' in that long ago tune? Well... in a modern update by English author Mini Grey readers get reacquainted with 'Dish and Spoon'. In an oversize book, the story picks up with a record spinning a particular tune... i.e., recognizable by Dish and Spoon as they 'whirled around on the moonlit ocean'.
The duo became famous as they performed in a vaudeville show... What follows is only natural with fame -- money, a car, jewelry, furs... in New York City shopping at Bloomingdale's, Tiffany's... Alas, they soon overspend, and borrow from 'A gang of sharp and shady characters...' (literally, sharp utensils!). And what happens after that... as Dish and Spoon are unable to pay back the loan, and tragedy occurs. Oh No! Dish is broken... the tale jumps to twenty-five years later, after Dish had done his time in jail.
The jacket and inside illustrations are stupendously large, colorful, and wonderful, displaying the Statue of Liberty, the Cows jumping over a Liberty-head coin, a limousine, and the shady, sharp characters, no less. Brrrr!
Mini Grey has authored award-winning children's books, including her entrance into the writing field with 'Traction Man Is Here', and 'The Very Smart Pea And The Princess To Be'.
Also recommend books by: J.C. Andrews in his 'Andrew Lost' series; Mary Pope Osborne's 'Magic Tree House, Merlin Mission' series; the Disney Fairies series; and 'A COLOR OF HIS OWN' and other tales by Leo Lionni.
A Wild Ride!.......2006-11-10
The spoon narrates this version of the dish/spoon tale and it's a wild ride from the beginning. This dish, you see, has quite the taste for adventure and the spoon is so besotted, s/he can't help but follow along: "I don't know where we were going and I didn't care. I knew the dish would take us there."
And, "there" they go. First to NYC, starring in a vaudeville show, where they are a huge hit. But, like many a great adventurer, the dish "got a taste for the high life" and before you know it the money "was all gone." They go into debt to "a gang of sharp and shady characters," and end up on the run.
When the dish is injured, s/he tells the spoon to "run while you can." The spoon, who is clearly the passive character in this relationship, tells us, sadly: "But the dish was broken and so was I. I let them lock me up and turned away from the moon."
The spoon is locked away for twenty five years (!) and, upon release, finds work in a china shop. Lo and behold the dish is there and when someone "put a record on the old gramophone player," the tune inspires them to hit the road once again and entertain.
It's an old story, but Mini Grey shakes it up with dynamic, entertaining and funny illustrations. The "shady characters" who loan the dish and the spoon money? Some scary-looking knives, who cast long shadows. When the dish and spoon run away from said characters, they wear hilarious burglar masks. While I worry about spoon's passivity (Spoon! Listen up: the Dish is bad for you. You can do better), "The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon" is read-aloud fun--perfect for the four- to nine-year-old crowd.
NB: I read this book aloud last night to a five year old and discovered the dish is a she. No definite gender for the spoon, however.
Young picturebook readers will relish this different take on a classic........2006-11-06
Mini Grey's THE ADVENTURES OF THE DISH AND THE SPOON provides a different spin on the nursery rhyme: here the utensils run off into the night, sail to America, and become a vaudeville act - spoiled only by their very different adventures among street gangs of jagged knives and rusty forks. Young picturebook readers will relish this different take on a classic.
Hey, baby, they're playing our song. Let's get back together, that's where we belong........2006-08-09
Mini Grey, likes to do things a little differently. You would expect no less from a woman named after a car, I suppose. Back in the day, Grey's first picture book, "The Very Smart Pea and the Princess-to-be" got her a bit of casual interest by taking a pea's perspective. Her second title, "Traction Man Is Here", roped itself a highly prestigious Boston-Globe Book Award and presented to us the too-often dangerous world of an action figure. Now something entirely different has come along the pike and Grey has given us a book that's primed to knock our socks off yet again. We all know that old "Hey Diddle Diddle" nursery rhyme. You know the one I mean. With the moon loving cow, the fiddle-playing cat, and the dog who finds it all a gas? We've heard it all before, but what really happened to the dish and the spoon? Remember how in the poem they just took off without so much as a toodle-oo? For decades upon decades illustrators and writers have speculated as to the last known location of the intrepid duo. Now, at long last, we have the answer. They fled to New York City and their story is not necessarily a pretty one.
It happened one night. The record was playing, the moon was full, and Dish and Spoon just took off for parts unknown. A quick dive into the ocean, a sail across the sea, and before you know it the twosome find themselves in the Big Apple! It doesn't take long for the pair to hit it big on the vaudeville circuit and for a while it's all fame, fortune, and glamour. Unfortunately they go a little crazy with their dough and before you know it they've been replaced by a hot new act. Trying to get some money from a shady crew of knives, hammers, and tongs just gets our heroes into even deeper trouble. They attempt to rob a bank to pay back their debts but the Dish gets cracked and the spoon serves some time. Years later both have been deported back to Great Britain and in a junk shop the old lovers are reunited once again. And you know, there are people out there who have never seen Dish and Spoon tricks before. It's a whole new world and our heroes are back on top.
Grey first honed her talents for animating inanimate objects in "Traction Man Is Here" and in this book she goes all out on the details. Did you notice that when Dish and Spoon get their first glimpse of Lady Liberty she isn't sporting her usual greenish glow but instead a glorious coppery color? Did you see the evil knives and tongs going down a carnival slide near the end? How about the reappearing Liberty Head nickel that crops up from time to time? When Dish and Spoon are trolling about in their new jalopy, a nickel on the crest of the car identifies the year as 1933. The Liberty Head nickel motif was one of the more interesting and obvious details of the book, but there were plenty of others to catch the eye as well. Reading this book through several times you begin to learn more and more about the details of the Dish and Spoon escape. The cat with a fiddle, for example, seems to be the fellow who inspires the two to run away in the first place, bringing them together again at the end. As with all her books, Grey packs in the images and multiple storylines in new and interesting combinations.
The book is slightly more dour than its predecessor, "Traction Man Is Here". In that book, the most depressing moment in the story was when our hero couldn't defeat the villain because everyone was laughing at him in his bright green jumper. In "Dish and Spoon" one hero is cracked and sent to recuperate in Britain while the other does time for his crime. Still, it makes for a far more satisfying ending and I can honestly say that I've never read a picture book that presents spoon-dish love in such a sympathetic and truly touching manner.
Of course, Grey isn't the first picture book author to speculate on the whereabouts of Baby-We-Were-Born-To-Run Dish and Spoon. Just back in 2001 Janet Stevens came out with, "And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon". And while a lovely looking item and all, Stevens' creation cannot touch Grey's when it comes to pure bonified moxy. Grey brings to life the 1930s and 50s with more flair than you'd ever think possible. If you want to introduce young children to Depression-era America, or just need a couple of fractured fairy-tale/nursery rhyme picture books to pad out your collection, this should be one of the first items to purchase for your list. A tale of adventure, sterling silver, and true love. Fine fine cutlery indeed.

Not One Wasted Page.......2007-04-22
This book is filled-brimming with knowledge, page after page, and not one page is wasteful!
Filled with lore,
Filled with recipes.
My God, filled with information I couldn't believe existed!
Do you know what a syllabub is?
I did, we have an original syllabub, one that actually survived the Civil War. This cookbook describes in detail what they were used for, and the greatest of recipes for syllabub-the milk and wine mix.
This book is a history book, listing TRUE History!
How our ancestors ticked, and why you have that inclination to go back to those old traditional ways, because you have it in your genes, you are a descendant of these tough and true-grit individuals that fought and survived the most brutal of wars.
This book will make you proud, you won't be inclined to ever loan it out, because even if you let grandma borrow it, it probably won't be returned.
I forewarned you- don't loan it out!
Keep it, read it, and if tempted, just buy another one to loan, it's worth the price paid. Hurry now, before they read this review and decide to raise the cost! (too bad I couldn't make that smaller print)
Fabulous Food Folklore.......2006-08-07
Dabney captures the culinary culture of the Appalachians. Wonderful anecdotes and reminiscing carry the reader along. The Michie Tavern Apple Cobbler recipe is excellent (Almost like dining there again!). There is a factual error relating to Kentucky Burgoo. Dabney writes that this was first introduced to Kentucky by Col. Jaubert in 1810. Jaubert wasn't born until about 1840 according to census records and his grave marker. This error was no fault of the writer, though. Marion Flexner's 'Out of Kentucky Kitchens', which was sourced, also includes this error.
Yummy for the Tummy.......2004-06-16
Rose Houk went back to the Appalachian roots for these recipes.
Opossum, "take one opossum and slow cook him to get the fat out." Then she describes the people's stories how during the winter you might not have much more than a squirrel for meat.
I got a sense of the bravery and strength of character of the mountain people when they grew their own food during hard times and good times. Their meals reminded me of a simpler time when large families worked their land and survived together.
Besides all that, her story telling made me laugh.
Awesome.......2004-01-10
All I can say is this book is AWESOME. You must get it. I have never seen such quality, and old time cooking, and history wrapped up in one cookbook like this. I wish there were more books like this one. If we don't write down the knowledge these people had, and how they survived, and lived...we are making a tragic mistake. I cannot wait to start making some of the food listed from their recipes! I just saw this book last night at a bookstore in town. Don't hesitate to get this book, you won't be sorry.
Folksy shouldn't be dumb.......2003-12-27
The author of this folksy, breezy book is obviously in love with his subject. Unfortunately, he sometimes does not seem to know what he's writing about. On page 189 with a photo of hams hanging hock up, he quotes a mountain sage who says hams should be 'hung with the hocks down', but apparently does not notice the discrepancy. Five pages later he gives his 'modern update' to a traditional recipe: boil ham in water in a deep pan (not a pressure cooker) at 300 degrees. Funny, I can't get my boiling water above 212 degrees. Although he has a deep love of the subject, he does not appear to have a deep knowledge. There are many examples of inconsistencies. On page 313 and following, he describes a mountain personage Aggie Ross Lossiah and then on page 327 and following, he describes the same person, but calls her Angie Ross Lossiah. (These are not just typos; at each place he uses the name multiple times.) In the chapter on sorghum syrup, he says 'it is known in the mountains as "long sweetenin'." This is in contrast to "short sweetenin'" -- refined sugar.' Then in the chapter on honey, he says 'honey was considered the much-loved mountain "long sweetening" while sorghum was "short sweetening".'
The main purpose of the recipes in the book seem for entertainment. Many are cute, but most are either trivial and obvious, or else carelessly presented; for example, a recipe for blackberry dumplings calls for four ingredients: 1 qt blackberries, 1 1/4 c sugar, 2 c water, and "Berry mix". I have not figured out where to get the "Berry mix" (is that a commercial product?) or when to add it -- it was not mentioned in the directions. Also, there's that problem of boiling water at 300 degrees. Nevertheless, I found the book enjoyable and evocative of my own experiences in and with the people of the Southern Appalachians.
