Book Description

Why was this a #1 bestseller in Canada in 2002? Because it is an easy-to-follow, easy-to-stick-to, truly healthy approach to eating that is based on the Glycemic Index, the original science behind The Zone Diet, but eliminates that diet's complexity and tendency to leave dieters wanting more. If you can understand a traffic light, you can understand this diet--and lose weight permanently without feeling hungry, counting calories, or jeopardizing your health. If a food is in the green column, eat it. If it's in the red column, avoid it. And if it's in the yellow column, proceed with caution. Take bread, for example. White bread, with its high G.I. number, is red-because it's so highly processed the body digests it quickly, resulting in a spike in blood sugar, a release of insulin, potential storage as fat, and a quick return of the hungry feeling. Low-G.I. 100% stone-ground whole-wheat bread is green-the body takes a while to digest it, with no spike in blood sugar and a much longer feeling of satiety. Green, yellow, red: It's all here, with a full explanation of how the diet works, plus ratings for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, eating out or eating in. Includes some recipes, snack ideas, a shopping list, and tips on dining out.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-03

I bought this book for myself and am having such great success that I bought the book for my mother and sister. To date mom and I combined have lost 50 lbs. We have more energy and feel healthier than we have in years. Mom is 63 years old and keeps up with us if not better she says her energy level is just amazing. I have a total of 56 lbs. to lose. I have lost 22 lbs I know with this plan I will make it. This is a way of eating not just a diet but here's the beauty in it you can easily eat this way for the rest of your life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to lose weight and get healthy.

5 out of 5 stars 1st Book of the GI Diet.......2007-07-30

This book verifies and clarifies the idea of the insulin and glucose "yo-yo" weight gain. 20 years ago I read another book similar to this idea, "Sugar Blues", but it was considered "fanatical". I recommend this book to anyone who can't understand why they just can't lose weight.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Healthier Living = Weight Loss.......2007-07-25

I ordered this book in late April 2007 and found it a very easy read, with clear and concise charts and explanations. I, like many people, struggle with my weight and find that I have been undertaking the battle of the buldge for nearly 3/4 of my life, so far. I have had enough.

I have tried every plan and I liked Atkins, and had success with it, but I tweaked it and kept my carbs in check but ate lean meats, the "right" fruits and plenty of vegetables. If I eliminated too many of the good foods...I felt crummy.

Low fat by itself was not a good choice for me.

So, I read up on the Glycemic Index and in researching food lists, on the internet, I found this book. Wow! I am glad that I did.

I can't say that it, by itself, is some miracle breakthrough. Much, for me, is stuff that I already knew and found was true with my own body and metabolism. But the book gives great guides, easy to follow lists (RED < YELLOW AND GREEN LIGHT foods) and takes the guesswork out of eating right.

I have peacefully decided that while I need to lose 70-80 pounds to embrace a healthy BMI - I am not on a diet. I am changing my lifestyle. I am not making changes-TEMPORARILY- but permanently. This book makes that possible. I am still in the weight loss phase and am doing well.

Since the end of April, I have lost 37.4 pounds. This is by following the Glycemic Index and fueling my body with the food that will bring me the most satisfaction and energy. I have never been more satiated or energetic (and I need to be with 3 boys between 1 and 9!) I have also started walking and incorporating activity (real activity- not just chasing after my kids) into my lifestyle. I'm not a fitness guru and wish that I could get the weight off and keep it off without it...but I can't and it won't. I am walking 30 minutes, at LEAST 3 times a week or maximum of 5. That is all I have done differently. I am thrilled and amazed by my progress and am careful to not allow my mindset to change.

I don't want to be diabetic or have high blood pressure or cholesterol. I want to be a healthy, fit 37 year old wife and mother. This book is helping me. The recipes are delicious too!

I think that the high fiber with the low fat, whole grains, fruit and veggies...really helps keep me full and satisfied as well as selecting those foods that don't naturally cause sharp increases or declines in my blood sugar. Thank you, Mr. Gallup for not just being another fad diet or looking to get rich off all of the overweight people out there. Making a living/profit off of sound science and desire to share the knowledge is respectable.

It has only been 14 weeks and I am feeling very good with my results of 37.4 pounds down. I think that I will be satisfied with 45 more and I am taking it in "little bites".

Great book. I encourage you to make the change in your life too, as it is really something you can LIVE with!

5 out of 5 stars It Works!.......2007-07-09

I was able to get off insulin and any other diabetes medication (I am type 2)
within a year by losing more than 100 lbs! You have to combine it with exercise of course, but it works!

5 out of 5 stars Helped stopped Eating Disorders.......2007-05-28

I began following this book 2 weeks ago. I know that I don't really need to lose weight but having had eating disorders for over 40 years I am always searching for a way to lose a "few" pounds. Yes, I have lost 5 lbs.since starting the book, but the biggest plus of all is having my hunger satisfied to the point that I no longer suffer the constant craving of high sugar, high fat content foods to binge on. The dynamics behind the diet of regulating insulin is what its all about. It's only been 2 weeks, but so far for the first time in 40 years have I enjoy a normal relationship with food. Love this book!! It is so easy to follow and allows you plenty of good food all day. I'm grateful to have found it.

Book Description

When Jill Fleming obtained her bachelor of science degree in dietetics and a master's degree in nutritional sciences, she found herself carrying an extra 40 pounds. Since her plan was to work with overweight people to help them lose weight, Fleming knew she needed to examine her own lifestyle.

She began with simple changes: cutting back on junk food, drinking more water, moving her body. Her weight started to melt off. Fleming went on to develop the THIN CHOICES® weight-loss and maintenance program based on her own success, the success of her weight-loss clients over 11 years, and numerous surveys of thin people. Here she reveals her life-transforming approach to permanent weight loss.

The book is divided into 17 chapters, each describing how the habits of "thin" people keep them that way. From "Thin People Don't `Diet'" to "Thin People Don't Go to Bed Full," from "Thin People Eat Chocolate" to "Thin People Drink Water," you'll soon learn exactly what you need to do —and you'll understand the reason. Easy-to-understand analogies and visuals will help translate often confusing scientific nutrition information in layman's terms.

Latter chapters include recipe alterations and menu ideas, a summary of the THIN CHOICES program, and tips on maintenance once weight loss has been achieved. A suggested reading list provides additional resources.

Fleming writes, "It has been said that `where the mind goes, the body will follow.' Believe that you are a thin person; begin living like a thin person and soon you will become that thin person." And it truly does seem that simple.

4 out of 5 stars It makes sense.......2007-04-13

The book is not going to tell you anything revolutionary but employs sound common sense with lifestyle changes that are proven to help you lose weight. I especially liked what she had to say about identifying the feeling of hunger, only eating when hungry, and stopping when satisfied (even if you leave food on your plate). It basically shows you how being conscious of your choices and thinking things through rather than acting on impulse can lead to healthy behavior.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Guide To Living Healthy.......2006-03-23

Jill Fleming's book is a common sense approach to living healthy and losing weight~in that order. And it isn't difficult to accomplish these goals if we just apply a few simple lifestyle changes which Jill details in "easy to digest" form. As I was reading, I kept thinking to myself "this makes total sense, this is do-able". I even highlighted my favorite points and reference them from time to time.
It was an enjoyable, easy read and helped to kick-start my resolve of being a healthier person. It's also a wonderful gift for anyone you care about and want to be healthier.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a simple, common-sense approach to weight loss........2006-03-18

No gimmicks, no forbidden foods, no endless chapters of vague promises about the program to be described later in the (usually too large) book. This is a slim volume of tips and facts that make perfect sense and are completely doable.

The author is a dietician who ironically packed on 40 pounds obtaining her bachelor's and master's degrees and has been through the weight-loss process herself. Unlike most "diet" books, the testimonials are kept to a minimum and there is no sales pitch for packaged foods, tapes or DVDs.

Each short chapter outlines an important step to permanent weight loss in straightforward language, and the chapters address psychological, social, and physical aspects of achieving weight loss in a healthy way.

Whether you need to lose weight because you feel unhealthy, can't deal with the huge restaurant portions presented these days, are overstressed or too busy to think about your eating habits, you'll find the information in this book helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you back to common sense .......2005-10-24

This reminds me of things I was taught when I was a little girl by mother. The simplicity of eating and staying thin before we even realized the medical reasons or the explanation and understanding of what makes us fat. We have been given so much bad information with fad diets with self proclaimed cures and treatments when it is very simple. None of the diets out there tell you to stop eating when you are full. None of them tell you to listen to your body. There are bad fats and there are bad carbs but eating healthy and not eating too much is important too and not over feeding your body. This book will get you started on small changes at a time that will help you behave and eat like a thin person until you are a thin person. It also helps you and teaches you to indentify the reasons why you abuse food. The author is also a caring individual. I e-mailed her with a question and she replied to my e-mail the very next day with an answer and words of encouragement. That in itself is encouraging. I am sick of people getting wealthy on this growing epidemic. Every other TV commericial is trying to sell you something. You buy them all and you are still fat. If you want the refreshing truth...read this book! It is easy to read and to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Commonsense advise for permanent weight loss!.......2005-03-27

Jill Fleming a registered dietician with an MS in nutritional science developed the THIN CHOICES program. This program reveals the habits of thin people.

In her book "Thin People Don't Clean Their Plates", Fleming reveals her techniques. The book opens with inspiring quotes from Jill's clients. In the 17 chapters that follow, Jill explains exactly what thin people do that helps them stay that way. Though the 136 page book is slim, Jill gets right to the point instead of including the extra fluff many other "diet" books do. She doesn't spend time writing about why all the other diets out there (except hers) don't work and she avoids a lot of scientific, technical chatter.

Chapters include Thin People Don't Diet, Thin People Carry Snacks, Thin People Don't Go to Bed Full, Thin People Eat Fruits and Vegetables and more.

The bottomline is the commonsense that prevails throughout the book. If you want to lose weight and maintain it you will have to eat less and/or move more. Jill tells you simple ways to do this. I especially liked her information on walking. One thing Jill shares is that a 155 pound woman who adds 1/2 hour of walking to her daily routine with no other dietary changes can lose 26 pounds a year. Sounds very doable to me!

Fleming encourages you to give up dieting and adapt an approach that you can stick with for a lifetime. Simple suggestions to incorporate into your life for wellness and a healthy slim body.

Book Description

Would you ever consider going to the kitchen in the morning and grabbing five slices of bread for breakfast? No? Just one bagel or perhaps a bran muffin is more like it, right? Well, think again. Your morning bagel or muffin is probably equivalent to eating five slices of bread, maybe more. That’s most of your grain servings for the day.

And, that steak you ate last night? For all the calories and protein you consumed, you might as well have eaten 18 eggs. More than double the amount of protein you need in a day.

Surprised at just how much you are eating? Dr. Lisa Young isn’t. She has been studying how Americans eat for more than a decade, and what she found is astonishing. Portion sizes have subtly and steadily increased over the past thirty years and are now two to five times larger than they were in the past. Even the average dinner plate has grown several inches to accommodate more food. The portions we’re served are getting bigger and we keep eating. The end result? That’s right. Americans are getting fatter.

So what should you do about it? You may think that counting calories, fat grams, or even eliminating entire food groups such as grains is the way to keep this trend toward colossal cuisine from making you fat. The problem is, you don’t know how many calories, fat, and carbs are in your favorite foods. No one does, not even the experts. When nutritionists were shown several restaurant meals in a survey, not one person was able to accurately guess the calorie or fat content of the meals.

In The Portion Teller, you’ll develop portion-size awareness and learn how to lose weight without weighing food or counting calories. Using simple visuals such as a deck of cards, a yo-yo, a baseball, and even your own hand, you’ll find out what a serving size is supposed to look like and how many servings you can eat per day from each food group. The visuals are easy to use: If your piece of salmon at dinner is about the size of three decks of cards, you’ve eaten all your meat and fish servings for the day.

The plan is easy. You’ll keep a food diary for a short time to get you started. Once you learn how to size-up your favorite foods with the visuals, Lisa’s Portion Personalities show you how stumbling blocks can be easily overcome. Are you a See Food Eater who can’t stop yourself at the sight of food or a Special Occasion Victim who can’t resist that cake at an office party or a Volume Eater who always wants her plate to be full? As a long-time nutrition counselor, Young gives real-world solutions for tackling your bad habits. There’s a cheater’s guide, for those who must satisfy that late-night chocolate craving, as well as a survival guide for eating out and daily meal plans.

No forbidden foods, no calorie counting, no food weighing. The Portion Teller isn’t a diet—it’s a sensible eating plan and the end of diet deprivation. Welcome to diet liberation.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense!.......2006-11-10

This is a get-real "diet" book. Educate yourself and face the sometimes difficult truth that most of us eat more than we think we eat. Thanks to Dr Young for opening some eyes on this score. It's not a gimmick. This is information anyone can use to eat and live well. Do yourself a favor, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars I'm losing...........2006-11-02

I've always brought diet books that left me confused not even half way through or bored. This book here has helped to see how much food I was actually eating. It doesn't matter if you low carbing it or not...we just eat too damn much. So far on this diet only been on it for 4 weeks and have lost 11 pounds! I have incorporated fitness activity 3-4x a week as well has found a weightloss support group along the way.

5 out of 5 stars loved it.......2006-07-13

I usually shy away from diet-type books. After all, how great can any ONE be when there are thousands coming out every year??? But I loved the idea of being able to eat whatever I want, just by looking at the sizes of my portions. This book is a great primer to the idea that it's not WHAT you eat as much as it is how MUCH you eat.

Young offers terrific real-world equivalents to help you get your chops around how many servings are in that Extra Value Meal. I am still a bit confused, though -- wish she had some additional info on how to really determine how much you need to eat, and some more translations of real menus into portion sizes. I would also love to see more success stories (love those before-and-afters!). All in all, I highly recommend this book. I checked it out from the library, but ended up marking so many pages to take notes from that I finally broke down and bought my own copy.

5 out of 5 stars Smartsizing really works!.......2006-07-09

Portion sizes are a major problem for most of us. The Portion Teller is a roadmap for sensible eating. Highly recommended for those who are overweight, as well as those of us who want to stay trim.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent job Explaining Portion Sizes.......2006-03-08

The book does an excellent job of explaining portion sizes and what is a normal size meal. Will help anyone trying to drop a few pounds, or maintain her or his body weight they are at now. Good rules to follow for feeding childern-teach them at an early age what is normal proportions and they will have less problems later in life and prevent them from " super sizing" everything in site. Highly recommended.

Eating the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fat creates a hormonal response that leads to burning stored fat for energy, claim nutritionists Joyce and Gene Daoust. This book explains how the 40-30-30 diet works (40 percent high fiber, mostly low-glycemic carbohydrate; 30 percent high-quality protein; 30 percent fat), and how to plan meals following this formula. The "Sample Starter Meal Planners" are organized into three meal categories: Regular, Fat-Flush, and Vegetarian (heavy on cheese, eggs, tofu, and tempeh). There are a few recipes, such as Hearty Chili, Teriyaki Chicken Kabobs, Pizza, and Tortilla Turkey Roll-Up, and many quickly assembled meals, such as Scrambled Eggs, Tuna on Rye Crackers, and Open-Faced Ham Sandwich. A food value guide gives the protein, carbohydrate, and fat grams of many common foods. Though some nutrition experts would argue that this diet is too low in carbohydrates and too high in protein, the Daousts say that "There are no good or bad foods....The key is achieving the proper balance of the foods that you eat."

5 out of 5 stars Love this book, helped drop some weight.......2007-07-28

My husband visited a nutritionist and he highly recommended this book and that's how we found it. This book was great and the recipes were wonderful. Nothing too fancy or crazy in taste. Has sections for Vegetarians, for the Fat Flush which is a specific diet you do for a few weeks to kick your body into gear losing the fat as quick as possible, and then a section on maintenance with new recipes and meal plans. The Fat Flush helped me lose 8 lbs. the first week and my husband lost 12 lbs. (men loose faster than women). The meals are about balancing your carbs, protein, and fats. I plan to re-read it again to refresh the nutritional information and advice.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Pass This Up !!!.......2005-01-07

I have finally found a weight loss book that is simple to understand and easy to follow. What I found to be extremely helpful was the Meal Planner Conversion Chart. It's all figured out for you. You choose the plan that suits you best. Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www. S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this. I lost 9 pounds in three weeks. Went from a size 18 jeans to a size 16. This is the only way to go!!!

5 out of 5 stars Zone made easy for regular people!.......2005-01-03

My doctor started me on this book in June 2004. I am 5'6" and was hitting the scales at my highest ever - 200 lbs. I was having trouble fitting in my size 14/16s and couldn't stand the thought of buying new, bigger clothes. I have always been a woman that "knew" what was good and bad in my refrigerator (I've read just about every article about dieting written), and had trouble fitting in exercise - especially after having two kids. The Zone was outrageously complicated, and so many other diets had huge restrictions on fruit and most veggies, and just didn't seem to make sense from a nutritional standpoint - I couldn't stick with them for long. My cravings, weird rules and the heavy restrictions on almost everything I loved was always a bomb ticking away inside. Then I found 40-30-30.

It is now six months later, I've lost 40 pounds and counting. I have a new way to eat for life! I lost 14 pounds the first month, then seven, then six and the rest has been consistently coming off ever since and - get this - I haven't managed to fit exercise in yet (still trying). I was very religious the first three months, then fell in to more of a settled routine where I am comfortable with the general parameters without refering to the book or my notes very often. And the beauty is, since you are changing the way you build your meals, I can "cheat" - I really consider it more like living your life, not cheating. I had chocolate cake at my son's & daughter's birthday parties one month in to the diet, had a glass of wine WITH my dinner during the second month but it was no big deal! My new way of eating wasn't disrupted, weight loss continued, and I very rarely have any cravings - I find that most of them are psychological anyway (a habitual reaction to stressful situations, etc.). Odd thing is that most of the things that I used to REALLY love (all carbs), don't return the same old satisfaction anymore - just not the same response from my body - that's definitely not something I expected.

I even managed to stay "even" during the difficult holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year's). I thought for sure that my excesses would tip the scale since I seemed to indulge in so much! But here I am, right on track! Looking back, I seem to make enough slightly different choices at all of these events to still maintain some balance (like eating shrimp cocktail along with some chip & dip instead of a plate of straight carbs).

Some of the key things for me were:
1) The ability to substitute my ZonePerfect bars (Fudge Graham are best) for up to two meals a day - really a lifesaver when you're on the go at work and with the family and it's critical that you not skip your meals.
2) There are really quick & easy meals that fit in to a life that was used to all of the convenience foods.
3) Please, those of you reading those "the cost of good food is so high!" reviews... have you added up the cost of all of your sodas, chips, ice cream, etc., lately? Even with the cost of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, I'm still spending less.
4) New, clear approaches to fast food and restaurant eating is outlined - I even check the websites of different companies to makes sure my picks keep my carbs, protein & fat in balance - it would surprise you what some of the "healthy" items add up to!
5) I have almost completely eliminated hydrogenated oil and aspartame from my diet - not easy considering they're in darn near everything these days! (I'm not sure if that came from my doctor or the book.)
6) First meal within one hour of getting up, last one four hours before bed.

Good luck! It's a great book, clearly and simply written, and it's been a lifesaver for me!

5 out of 5 stars This book worked for me twice!.......2004-04-09

I bought this book in December 1998, at the recommendation of the womens gym where I had been exercising. I followed the "Fat Flush" sample meal planner and lost 16 pounds. Now it's April 2004, I am 5 months post pardum, and have lost 10 pounds in 5 weeks, using the same meal plan. I've lost the carbohydrate cravings and truely feel great! The sample meal planners are satisfying examples. Chapter 8 "Putting it all together" provides all the tools you need to creat your own 40-30-30 meals in the portions right for your weight and activity level. Chapter 4 "The Glycemic Index" is an excellent resource for good-better-best carbohydrate choices.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to a workable system.......2002-10-14

This was the first book I read on the subject of weightloss by combining macro-nutrients in the right percentage. I chose this over "The Zone" as it seemed more user-friendly, and I was right. The system can be complicated at first, until you get used to it, and the Zone's "blocks" are an additional complication.

The authors do a great job at explaining why it is so important to balance the right amounts of carbohydrate, protein and fat, and how to choose wisely. It could very well be the first health/fitness book a person reeds and the reader would not feel overwhelmed, as the information is given in a way that it can be easily understood without any previous experience or background in the field of nutrition. The data is complete but you don't feel you need to be a biochemist to understand it, like in some other health books.
The book also offers one week of menus, in different variations: the regular ones, the vegetarian and the "fat flush", for those who want a more rapid weight loss. The meal plans are furtherly taylored to your individual needs by establishing which type of 4 (A-D) you fall in, depending on your weight and activity level, and therefore being able to establish the right quantity of each food contained in the daily menus.

There is also advice on what to choose when dining out and nutritional info on common commercial products, as well as a food value guide (how much protein is in 4oz of chicken breast?) to help the reader make the right choices and design his menus following the 40-30-30 regimen.

Overall, a very good guide, which doesn't get 5 stars just because at an attentive eye (from someone who has a background in nutrition/health/fitness), the plan would be even better if it was lighter on the sodium and dairy, but still, it's a great improvement over the current nutrition of most people.
I would suggest it to anyone who wants to lose weight but also to anyone who wishes to improve his/her fitness performance and energy levels.

Book Description

"If you struggle with compulsive eating, here is my promise to you: I will show you how to lose your excess weight and keep it off permanently -- but only if you are ready to make a serious commitment."

-- Caryl Ehrlich

Nobody can successfully cajole, argue, or prod another person into shedding those excess pounds. It just doesn't work. The commitment has to come from within. But if you are ready to go for it, the Ehrlich 8-step program for permanent weight loss is a godsend. It is not a diet. It does not tell you what foods you must eat or which ones to avoid. There is no need to count the calories, fat grams, or carbohydrates you consume. The perfect solution for compulsive eaters, it is a behavioral approach to weight loss that teaches you how to change habits to overcome food addiction. Caryl Ehrlich, a former compulsive eater, developed this program twenty-six years ago for herself and has taught it to participants in her program with successful results for twenty years.

As Ehrlich observes, no deprivation diet will work for food addicts, because they use food the way other addicts use drugs or alcohol: not to satisfy physical hunger but to stuff down painful feelings -- loneliness, anger, boredom, sadness, and the like -- with a never-ending conveyor belt of food. "If you're eating for physical satisfaction, you don't really need to eat very much. But if you're eating to narcotize, you could back up a truck full of food to your home or office and it still wouldn't be enough."

Conquer Your Food Addiction shows you how to develop the skills necessary to approach food in a new way, and learn how to distinguish physical hunger from emotional hunger. The program explains the trickiness of addiction so that overeaters become aware of their unconscious, ritualized eating habits and awaken to a new, realistic relationship with food. Binge eating, guilt, and anxieties about food and body image will be dramatically lessened as understanding increases. Using original concepts and easy assignments, this proven program retrains the thought process so you see food in a new, better, and healthier way.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind - Get it!.......2006-09-13

Conquer Your Food Addiction is a one of a kind weight-loss book. Yet it's much more than that! As a behavioral approach to weight loss, it a manual for a new way of thinking, behaving, being and eating.

The author's basic premise is that one need not change the foods one eats, but, instead, one's habits. It sounds so basic, until we try it. As creatures of habit, our diets revolve around deeply-ingrained habits and rituals derived from personal history, a contemporary super-size culture, and daily life-styles. The main idea/goal is that if one is overweight, barring some medical condition, one is eating more than needed out of habit!! Change the habits/rituals and you change your food consumption.

Although this book is written for those who are food addicts, it speaks to all of us who more often than not use food as an emotional filler, and/or who just eat out of habit, social pressure, boredom and so on.

In terms of the actual weight loss, the author turns into a personal weight-loss trainer - in fact, she is one, for those who live in the New York area. Her goal is our goal: to reach our weight loss goal, regardless of how many pounds. Like a coach, she asks again and again, "What do you want to weigh?" This is tremendously helpful in sticking with it! By focussing on the goal, the issue is less about food and more about changing our habits, hence our outlook, about eating to get us to our permanent weight-loss goal.

I find this book one of a kind. In fact, I don't see another out there like it! I highly recommend it for someone who is serious about transforming both mind, behavior and body!

5 out of 5 stars A book after my own heart........2006-09-12

First of all, I didn't read this book in order to lose or maintain weight. I read it because of the title, "Conquer Your Food Addiction," which reflects my attitude toward food consumption and bodyweight, which is: If I'm eating more than I need to eat for proper nutrition AND enjoyment, and I am overweight but with no medical problem causing my excess weight, then I should pay attention to my eating habits and change them. The way I had lost weight and maintained that loss without feeling deprived of enjoyment, turns out to be basically the way the author of this book went about it, and wrote about it.

And, I, like the author, had other serious addictions--my own having been heroin, which I kicked forty years ago, and cigaret smoking, which I kicked eighteen years ago. I figured I didn't need an amount of food that caused me to be overweight any moe than I needed heroin or cigarets.

There is no book that is perfect for every person. Upon reading any book, one should learn from it what one can, and do whatever else is helpful for one as an individual. I find, for myself, that regular exercise three times a week, helps give me a sense of how much I need to eat. I also try to make my calories count. For instance, I have a sweet tooth, but I have found that instead of having a piece of cake with rich topping, I am truly satisfied with, for instance, a whole-grain rice cake or whole wheat matzoh with natural (non-hydrogenized) almond butter, topped with reduced fat sour cream or yogurt.

2 out of 5 stars Inconsistent and disappointing.......2006-08-31

Ms. Ehrlich (who has no credentials I have been able to discover) begins by promising that her program is not a diet, and that you can still eat anything you want. She goes on to essentially equate bread with dessert, and forbid sandwiches outright, along with anything else eaten with the hands. There does not seem to be any recognition that different people have a problem with different types of food or eating situations. Despite her claim that this is not a diet, much of the book is taken up by her meal plans.

With revolting illustrations and such recommendations as wearing tight clothes and tightening the belt before eating, she takes an aversive approach to food and eating in general. There is also a lot of focus on weight. "If you really want to weigh ___ pounds" is repeated as a mantra. Ehrlich prescribes an obsessive habit of twice-daily weighing, going so far as to insist that if the reader were serious about weight loss, he or she would pack a bathroom scale on trips. A person with a compulsive eating problem probably already has plenty of self-loathing, and it seems like some of these strategies could really backfire.

There IS some good advice in here--like the importance of recognizing small successes rather than focusing on failures--but not nearly enough attention to the behavioral aspects of compulsive eating.

2 out of 5 stars Self-contradicting plan.......2006-08-11

This book offers two main things- no diet to follow, and a new outlook on food for the reader. It encourages eating when hungry, in moderation, and encourages the reader to "repattern" thoughts away from food.

That said, the book follows with sample meal plans, demands that the reader cook all meals and explains what foods are forbidden. This seems to contradict the message of eating all foods in moderation. Also the reader is encouraged to weigh themselves twice daily. Almost all doctors and nutritionists will agree that once a week is ideal for weigh-ins, and more frequency can cause obsessive behavior.

This book is only for the strong-willed reader who is intellegent enough to pick and choose miss Ehrlich's methods. Many individuals with addictive tendencies, such as those targeted by this book, could find themselves in a spiral of bad behaviors and obsessions.

5 out of 5 stars This book made me think about what I eat.......2006-07-06

This review is written by a 44 year old woman that has struggled with losing weight for many years. The combination of too much work, and not enough sleep and exercise resulted in "excess storage tissue" as my darling husband likes to call it. If you have ever eaten something, even though you weren't hungry, this is an interesting book.

This book is written for those that consume the standard American diet. As a new vegan I found it a little difficult to modify to fit that lifestyle since the diet advocates eggs and animal protein in the session on meal parameters. However, I have been able to substitute tofu, beans and seitan in a way that seems appropriate to me.

The book is subdivided as follows:
Session 1: The Basics
Session 2: Meal Parameters
Session 3: The Fillers
Session 4: Number of Items
Session 5: Portion Size
Session 6: Quantum Leaps
Session 7: Comprehensive Review
Session 8: Home Base

The book is divided into sessions. The idea is that each chapter covers what the author would cover in a session if the reader were a client coming to her office. The chapters are very easy to read, and yet still make you think. I found myself trying to argue with the book that certain ideas are unnecessary. I must admit that I do not follow all the practices that the author advocates, but have incorporated most of them into my daily life.

The author advocates a few practices that are standard, like recording what you eat. No one likes to do this, but it does seem to work. The author also advocates weighing yourself twice a day, morning and evening. I think this is overkill and refuse to do it. But, weighing myself once a day is fine.

What this book did for me was to bring a general level of awareness to my eating. Having to record everything that you put into your mouth has a tendency to make you much more aware.

The most important thing that I learned from the book was the idea that I should be hungry when it was time for the next meal. What I mean by this is that if lunchtime comes and I am not hungry, then obviously I ate too much for breakfast. This seems like such a simple concept, but somehow it eluded me. With this new information I have been able to reduce my meal sizes dramatically and am still satisfied, but have begun to lose weight.

If you are looking for a push to lose a few pounds, or a lot of pounds, this book provides a very different way of approaching and thinking about food. In my opinion this is a very useful book from the perspective that it altered my thinking about food. I recommend this book to anyone that is struggling with excess weight.

Book Description

Fat is not the enemy!

Croissants. Brioche. Brie. To the American palate, these foods are fattening and oftentimes “forbidden.” Yet they are the regular staples of the French diet. And though almost half of all Americans are overweight, France’s obesity rate is at a low eight percent, while the French also boast fewer cases of stroke and heart disease. It’s clear that America’s obsession with low-fat and fat-free foods has ultimately failed.
In The Fat Fallacy, neuroscientist Will Clower explains precisely why the American diet sabotages weight-loss efforts and discusses how French eating habits can lead to better health and trimmer physiques. In this revolutionary work, Dr. Clower explains:

• How highly processed “fake foods” are the real culprit in the American diet
• Why it’s not just what you eat but how you eat that makes a difference
• Easy ways to adopt the habits of the French to melt the pounds away, including
complete dinner recipes—with dessert!

Finally, here’s a plan that cuts through the high-protein/low-fat debate. It’s not a gimmicky diet program but a way of life that will invite Americans to enjoy food like never before—while being healthier and trimmer than they ever could have imagined.

5 out of 5 stars The Fat Fallacy.......2007-02-08

It's a wonderful book, I've lost 10 lbs so far, by learning new eating habits, eating normal foods, cheese, bread, butter, chocolate, etc. It's amazing, Dr. Clower's French Diet works! Eating slower, smaller portions, but good oils, olive oil, butter, half-half in my coffee, etc. This book is worth every penny and more! I challenge you to read this book, not only to lose weight, but to slow down and enjoy life with your family and friends.

3 out of 5 stars OKAY............. But save your money, check it at the library first, I wish I had!.......2006-07-27

Goodness he stretches this book out. I prefer my information boiled down to essentials, clearly laid out and easy to use.

When it's a diet book you really use, it's necessary to find the information fast, not wade thru tons of personal stories and details.

That said, it's a good book with much the same as the usual french diet book weight loss secrets. Portion control, sensible natural food aka "whole foods", not fake plastic food. Food that has flavour and some fat to give a feeling of satiety.

But he drags it out far too long.

One the other hand the personal stories bring the diet tips into context so it's really good in terms of inspiration.

I've read better books, more useful books in the "french diet paradox" genre.

SO WHAT DO I SUGGEST? In order of preference (mine).

Get Anne Barone's Chic and Slim, C+S Encore, and or C+S Techniques from her website. Online sellers are selling them at hugely inflated prices, but she still sells from her own supply, you can find her website by googling.

She boils it all down to the "readers digest version".

I like her books enough to own them, even if ordering from her website was a bit extra bother. They are well worth it in my opinion.

Next is Gin Sanders Martini Diet. Gin does seem to have a caviar budget and isn't afraid to use it in the pursuit of a good figure and plenty of joie de vivre. Those on a budget need to read with an open mind taking it for inspiration and ready to substitute where necessary. Frugality IS a french tradition too.

French Women Don't Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano is a fun light read and like this book, inspiring, but better to get from the library first to see if it has what you need. As with ANY diet book really.

Next I would get this one by Will Clower, and maybe a Michel Montignac book for a rounded out look at the whole French diet paradox. Library first, then buy your own copy to mark up and highlight and dog ear the corners as any well used how to book should be.

Those will give you a broad range of ideas for designing your own "french diet".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read..........2006-01-23

Being a Neurophysiology which is a part of physiology as a science, which is concerned with the study of the nervous system. It is closely connected with psychology, neurology, clinical neurophysiology, electrophysiology, ethology, higher nervous activity and other schools of science makes the author more than qualified to write a book on how food effects the human body. And anyone who has lived in France for two years and has shut up and listened and observed, should be qualified in some way to discuss how the French eat and why they are so healthy compared to most Americans.

Having said that, I find the book full of wisdom that should a reader use even a small amount their life and health should improve alot. Sure the author drives home common sense things like stop eating faux foods, or eat small servings and he notes on page 122 'This diet is about giving up quantity for quality, about eating richer, better food and loving it more. Eating fewer calories falls out naturally from that.... You aren't losing weight, you are developing a healthy relationship with your food. Weight loss just happens.'

Going back to page 3 the author shows that in the United States 13,000 new fat free products invented in the last 15 years whereas in France you wont find such products. That the % of fat in the diet is lower in the US, 30-35% but 10% higher in France where obesity is almost unheard of. That in the US at least 30% of Americans are obese (this doesn't count those who are overweight or morbidly obese wheras in France the number is 8% and holding. Heart disease in the US is 3 times higher whereas in France it is 3 times lower. French women live years longer and French men 2 years longer than your average American.

And the author is 100% correct when he shares that people he has known (same with me) who have been in France for even a few weeks who have eaten in a total French way, are amazed that they lose weight and haven't really tried. And he shared on page 33 that 'Paul Rozin a scientist who explores the psychology of food, recently surveyed dietary viewpoints from many cultures. He pointed out that the French see food in terms of what it can do for you. Americans, on the other hand, view it in terms of the harm it can inflict'.

The author also shows keenly that Americans cheat when it comes to food whereas the French savour what they do eat which means that unlike the American cheater who eats fast in order to hide their mistake, the French not only can tell you what they ate and why they loved it, but can do so while eating 75% less than the average American.

The author also wisely reminds the reader that its their responsibility to stop making excuses and start making wiser choices. So what if when eating out the serving size is enough for three or four meals, grow up and learn to eat less and leave the leftovers or take them home for two more meals. Or better yet pick better places to eat where the serving sizes are more European in size.

The only complaint I have about the book is the title which I would have preferred to be The French Lifestyle Secrets to Permanent Weight Loss since studies show that only around 20% of people who diet succeed, whereas those who make lifestyle changes which are more permanent, have a much higher success rate.

3 out of 5 stars Good Ideas, mediocre writing.......2006-01-08

I kept getting the feeling over and over that the only reason the chapter I was currently reading existed was because the publisher gave him a minimum page count. The repetition and dry anecdotes made it a very boring read. The material would be much better suited in a pamphelt, or perhaps a website. I guess that doesn't make money though does it?

Also, I would like to let people know this is an eating *philosophy*, not a diet. I'm not saying that to sound pretentious, more so warning that if you're looking for a specific layout of how to do things, this is not the book for you. He gives loose guidelines and suggestions. It boils down to switching out low-fat foods for high fat, carbs are fine, eat less red meat (poultry and fish are fine), eat smaller portions and eat them more slowly. Oh and don't forget a glass of wine with your meal!

You could get the gist from reading these reviews, but if you really need the extra push and you have nothing better to do... go ahead and buy the book.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics.......2006-01-07

I read this book over a year ago and forgot about it. It all made sense to me, but I don't think I was ready to give up on the next "miracle diet." I honestly don't know what happened to that copy. Flash forward a year and there I was searching Amazon for a "non-diet" book because I was finally ready to give up on the diet stupidity that had only helped me GAIN weight over the years instead of shed it and keep it off. I rebought this book. I didn't know I had already read it until I got it and opened it up. I recongnized the graphics and the easy-going writing style.

Well, I reread it in a couple of days. I couldn't put it down. The advice is very simple, and I think once you're ready, this way of relating to food is a total pleasure! I've been waiting until hungry to eat, slowing down, taking smaller bites and the best part? I'm eating whatever I want to eat! This way of eating is so easy for me because I adore good cheeses, fresh fruits and veggies, fish, a good, dry red wine with dinner, and I eat meat, but only here and there. It was never the kind of foods I craved that were the problem (although any diet I was ever on since age 10 would beg to differ)... It was the quantity I was eating of the foods I was told I COULD eat. I think I've over-ridden my body signals for so long, I had no idea when I was satisfied, or what it even felt like anymore. It's still something I'm working on now because I'm so used to stuffing myself with "approved" foods from some list somewhere, to make up for not being able to eat what I really wanted.

I know this is my answer because even while on vacation, visiting my mother and grandmother (both life-long dieters), I still lost 2lbs in 6 days. I think I said, "no thank you, I'm not hungry yet" about 12 times a day as my mother would push food on me and my grandmother would watch, waiting to see what I'd say.

Anyway, if you're ready to give up on diets, tired of trying so hard and failing so miserably like I was, this book is for you. It'll help you to tune back in to your body, and help you change your habits for the better for long-lasting changes that will help your body shed the pounds naturally. After over 20 years on diets, I just wish I was ready for this message so much sooner. Better late than never, though! =)

5 out of 5 stars It Works.......2007-07-25

This works. It is not a "diet" but a better way of eating, for life. Dr. Jampolis shows how to add protein to your meals and snacks 6 times a day, add exercise, how to shop. There are no "specialty foods", just regular things at your grocery. I have lost fat, gained muscle, and still have lost weight. Her book is also easy to reference when one has questions, e.g. hitting a plateau and how to handle it Going out for dinner? - she tells you how to do it, enjoy yourself, but not stray. Even a glass of wine is ok. Weight loss is slow, but for me, unlike other quick-loss plans, this is permanent. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-03

This is a great book from a physician trained in nutrition (imagine that) who really knows her topic. She does this work day in and out with real folks like you and me. Too many diet/health books are written by celebrities or a person with no nutritional background; not so with this comprehensive program.
The good Doctor will cover all your questions in this book and if she doesn't please check out her web-site- drmelina.com - an excellent addition to the book. Actually the book continues on her site with recipes, up to date info and a great blog.
I have read so many diet/health books- this one truly is special- get it today!

5 out of 5 stars Take time to read this book!.......2007-06-23

I definitely fit the definition of a "busy person." Like many people, I do not have hours to devote to cooking healthy meals and working out at the gym. Nor do I have time to read a book about nutrition and exercise. But trust me when I say you need this book!

I had seen Dr. Melina's series on Fit TV and really enjoyed it, so when I saw her book (and it's title!) I had to have it. I have learned so much. Her meals suggestions have been a lifesaver for me - I consult the book every week when I plan my meals and buy groceries. And the success stories that she includes - real people who have the same busy lifestyle - are such an inspiration.

This is not some crazy diet that is going to throw your life into disarray; these are real tips that you can slowly incorporate into your life to change into a healthier person. Dr. Melina even tackles issues like "But I hate Going to the Gym!" and eating out at restaurants.

THIS IS A BOOK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KEEP GOING TO FOR INFORMATION,MOTIVATION,ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS WHY,HOW,AND WHEN.I AM IN THE PROCESS OF READING AND NOT APPLYING SO I CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW MUCH LB I LOST BUT ITS A SELF HELP BOOK AND EASY TO FOLLOW

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book.......2007-05-30

This book was a godsend. I had successfully managed to lose 65 pounds using a form of low-carb dieting. And though I was thrilled to be rid of the weight, I was left with the heavy burden of knowing that it would quickly come back as soon as I began touching carbohydrates. In fact I had become resigned to the idea that I was destined to live without love handles or my beloved bread. Reading the no time to lose diet helped me to learn how to eat sensibly and gave me a new sense of control in my life. Since reading the book actually lost 7 pounds I eat pancakes for breakfast one or two times a week and have some type of bread everyday. I can't tell you what a relief it is to live like a normal person and not have to be fat at the same time. As someone who has read virtually every diet book written I highly recommend this book as it will not only help you lose weight but it will help you live a happy normal life.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss Shoppers' Guide.......2006-08-06

This little book offers good suggestions for shopping for ordinary foods that help with weight loss. I found it helpful in starting my weight loss program.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-07-20

Another great tool from Dr. Shapiro! Small enough to take with you to the store!

1 out of 5 stars READ LABELS AND COMPARE.......2003-01-01

Really a no-brainer. All he essentially says is to read labels and compare calories per serving. Most products whether listed as "low cholesterol" or "low fat", etc. are not that much different in calories than their counterparts without these claims.

I do disagree with a couple things he says. Like "peanut butter" is ok for a spread. At 190 calories for 2 tbsp. (he says), it's pretty high in calories. He fails to mention that to make it spreadable, icing sugar is added!!! Read the label if you don't believe me. Only "pure" peanut butter from a health food store is better----because it contains only peanuts and you can usually watch them make it right in front of your eyes. Even soups have unnecessary ADDED suger. Why, I have no idea. And if they leave OUT the salt or sugar, the price dramatically goes up!!!! Another rip-off by companies for people trying to lose weight.

Also, he claims the amount of salt doesn't make any difference to weight. Well, I can notice a BIG difference when I eat anything salty. I retain alot of water because of it. My hands and feet both swell up the next day.

And one important point he seems to be forgetting. People mostly choose things that are fast, easy and cheap when they are in a hurry. They don't read labels and compare calories. You could spend hours and hours shopping and reading labels the next time you go to the grocery store. Time is not a luxury for most people.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect - Great Book.......2002-10-24

My purpose in writing this review is to let others know whether or not in my opinion, the book being reviewed is worth trading their hard-earned cash for. In this case, my opinion is a resounding "Yes." If you're shopping today, put this book in your cart and run to the checkout.

This book is a "little nugget." It is about 4 x 7 inches which should easily fit into a woman's average-sized handbag for easy reference. But, good news, this isn't a book that you need to tote with you to the supermarket. Dr. Shapiro shares some very simple principles that if you pay attention to, you can shop without any kind of guide and fill you grocery cart full of weight-conscious selections. I have already begun to use some of the principles Dr. Shapiro suggested.

Basically, the book is filled with good, common sense. Two things I found extremely helpful were his discussions on peanut-butter and on drinks we buy to swallow. He dispelled a common peanut butter "myth" and makes us aware that we have a choice between chewing our calories or swigging them down.

Dr. Shapiro's book also has helpful little hints and sidebars with comparisons in the book that are absolutely eye-opening. There is a small calorie-counter section in the back, if you want one.
By the way, Dr. Shapiro's tone in the book is light and refreshing. It makes you want to make the best decisions for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent companion book to PICTURE PERFECT WEIGHT LOSS!.......2002-08-15

Picture Perfect Weight Loss Shoppers Guide is the companion book to Dr. Shapiro's original book Picture Perfect Weight Loss (PPWL).

The book PPWL uses visual pictures to help readers realize the differences in calories between items. For example, you could eat one black and white cookie or eat a whole box of fudge pops!
The intent of the book PPWL is to help you become aware of your food choices in order to make healthier choices and/or lose weight.

The PPWL Shopper's Guide takes the information from the original book one step further by giving you brand name items to look for in your grocery store. The guide does not show the stunning pictures like the original book does. Instead it "walks" you through the supermarket aisles and helps you make good choices.

It's like having Dr. Shapiro or one of his assistants with you. At the beginning of the book Shapiro recaps the PPWL program. Then he teaches you how to read food labels. Next you are given a list of anytime foods. These are items to keep around all the time. Fruits and veggies head the list. But there are also some surprises, like tootsie pops, and frozen desserts.

Item by item, Dr. Shapiro walks you throught the grocery store and helps you fill your cart with delicious, nutritious foods that will keep the pounds off. You learn what to look for in the dairy section, frozen food aisle, meat area, bread shelf etc. Depriviation and dieting are things of the past! You can eat well, lose weight and enjoy by making simple changes!

Though smaller than many books the PPWL Shopper's Guide is not pocketsized. Its a book you would be more likely to read at home and then go shopping. I would like to see Dr. Shapiro put out an additional book. A tiny brand name shoppers guide that you could tuck in your pocket and use at the store. This book has that information but so much additional info that sizewise its more for home use and to make a grocery list from. Hopefully, Dr. Shapiro will put out a condensed, handy to carry version in the future.

The book is an excellent source of information and will help you make the best supermarket choices to improve your health and or achieve permanent weight loss!

    Book Description

What if you could lose weight easily--without diets, calorie counters, or complicated workouts?

For the last twenty-five years, Dr. Ronald J. Glassman has helped thousands of his patients lose weight—from five pounds to 150 pounds—and keep it off. And he knows that the answer to overeating is not another diet or exercise regimen. The answer is to harness the power of your mind. The Alpha Solution presents his phenomenally successful scientific approach to easy, permanent weight loss—and proves that you literally can think yourself thin.

For many of us, the result of years of poor eating, or eating for psychological and social reasons rather than nutritional ones, means that, subconsciously, we have been conditioned to eat the wrong foods in the wrong quantities. Despite our desire to be lean, strong, and healthy, we’re still subconsciously programmed to overeat, crave certain foods, and snack unnecessarily. This is why diets don’t work: Even if we know we should choose salad over pizza, our subconscious mind—ingrained with years of negative eating habits—undermines our efforts at every turn. The solution? Give your brain a new food blueprint by tapping into its “Alpha” state—the state right before you fall asleep in which your subconscious mind is open to suggestion and change.

Through a series of simple questionnaires, Dr. Glassman guides you through the process of identifying the food issues you need to overcome and creating two personalized scripts tailored to your specific weight loss needs. You will then record the scripts on a tape or CD and listen to the recordings each night as you fall asleep. The changes are immediate and dramatic—you will begin reaching for healthy foods, keeping proper portion sizes, and turning down the fattening, sugary foods you used to crave. Within days, your eating habits will be transformed and you will begin melting away the pounds—seemingly without effort!

Filled with success stories, The Alpha Solution is already changing the lives of people everywhere. Losing weight has never been this easy—and you will never have to “diet” again. What could be better than that?

    No counting calories
    No carb restriction
    No complex menus
    No special workouts

Finally, a medically proven way to change your relationship with food forever--no diet or exercise required! This revolutionary book reveals how to literally think yourself thin: by simply and easily training your brain to automatically crave healthy foods in the proper portions. Whether you want to lose ten pounds or fifty, The Alpha Solution will quickly make diet struggles a thing of the past—and keep you fit and thin for life!

5 out of 5 stars A New Way to Weight Loss.......2007-05-31

There are so many books and plans out there on weight loss and proper eating. A person can easily become confused. Living here in Alaska, I've learned how the extreme cold and darkness of winter can make weighty foods like chocolate almost irrestible. And there is nothing like a big pizza or Calzone after a below zero walk with our two Greenland Huskies.
Now there's a new way, which helps us attack our poor eating habits ---through self-hypnosis. The author works healthy weight loss through the brain, rather than the stomach.
Our minds can become so accustomed to late night snacks, for example, when we become fearful, or find it difficult to sleep.
Dr. Glassman said he himself had such habits and was quite overweight, but ultimately lost 100 pounds through working out what he calls "a healthy eating mind."
Briefly, he advises recording two personalized scripts on a CD or casette (if you still have one those antique recording devices). And then playing them at night when we lie down to go to sleep. The recordings identify the food issues we need to overcome. It is diffucult for me to see any part of me ever satisfied with a lot less chocolate, but I'd like to give this system a try.
He recommends that any person using this approach check it out with their doctor, but says that hypnosis in general is as safe as daydreaming.
It would be nice to shed some pounds. Maybe then I'll be better able to keep up with our lean and speedy Huskies!
