2 out of 5 stars I can't recommend it.......2007-07-15

I greatly admire the work of Leslie Cabarga -- particularly in the book LOGO FONT & LETTERING BIBLE. Perhaps because of the aforementioned authorship, I let my guard down in purchasing DESIGNER'S GUIDE TO COLOR COMBINATIONS. The same tired layout is depicted hundreds of times in colors sampled from "historic" paintings. Though subject to personal opinion, I find the large majority of such colors are period dated or otherwise unsuitable for current graphic design projects. As with other books of this sort, the Live Color feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 renders this reference work unnecessary.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2007-04-16

I ordered this book for my college courses. It has been very helpful for several projects so far, especially when having to do projects that are historic in content.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful book.......2006-12-07

The book contains hundreds of color combinations derived from packages, posters, advertisements, giftwrap by designers over the past century. It covers Victorian period, Art Deco, Sixties, Modern times, etc.

On each page, beside the art piece, the author has posted a commentary related to the particular color combination which is often rather humorous and very much fun to read.

Underneath each color combination are listed CMYK colors used in that particular combination so that you can reproduce them in your graphic design program - Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc. - if you find a color combination you'd like to replicate or experiment with.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Color Combinationally Challenged.......2006-03-21

This book is an excellent resource for anyone in the field of Design. It not only offers a variety of color combinations to suit a particular style or time period but also includes the CMYK values to produce an exact duplication of the color(s) of your liking in the book (contingent upon monitor/printer callibration etc.).

2 out of 5 stars Designer's Guide to Color Combinations.......2005-08-04

The historical information presented was interesting but I found the format for color display dull and unimaginative. It did not really give a sense of the interaction of the colors displayed.

I had this book reccomended by a good friend of mind and it rules! This is everything you need to know about color and design. If you see a piece that you like, it'll tell you the process color code! It also comes with a CD & the cover rules! Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent design book for graphic desingers.......2005-10-21

This is a well-designed book showcasing some students work as well as more known designers like Ahn San Soo, and Art Chatry-in a word, many design examples in this book aren't the ones you seen in hundreds of other graphic design books out there. The work shown in the book aren't placed there randomly like a catalog display. They all effectively accompany a particular topic in discussion-about color.
There are seven chapters in the book:
1. Intro
2. The Terminology of color
3. Basic Color Theories
4. The Creation of Color Wheels
5. Color Calibration and Overprinting
6. Color Prepress and Printing
7. Behavioral Effects of Color
Note that the book for graphic designers. Those who want to study color theories and psychology of color may want to look else where. What l really like about this book is the discussion of prepress work and explaning step-by-step how to manange and correct colors. Like what you can find in the book, "Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color", there are also 19 pages of "color associations" which package designers may find useful. This book also blows away "Color Index." The book comes with a CD containing PDF files of "hue swatch system."

Each book looks closely at the aesthetic and applied use of color for specific purposes in this case logo design, which is unanimously credited as being the most commonly requested commercial design. To be successful in the field of logo design, designers need the skills and knowledge to create simple, bold graphics that will promote a particular company or cause, and provoke a desired response. J. Drew was my professor. He taught me at VCU- QATAR. He is more than a tutor. He taught me how to appreciate colors. "Colors sell a product" Some of my work is included in his book. The book has a huge collection of logos and identities from different region, different projects... etc I liked the arrangement of the works inside the book and how each logo has a brief explanation of the project. Thanks a lot to John Drew.

Book Description

This CD-ROM includes all 1250 color combinations from Leslie Cabarga's two best-selling color books: The Designer's Guide to Color Combinations and The Designer's Guide to Global Color Combinations. These books were the first to not only show color swatches in context, but to supply the CMYK and RGB color formulas so readers could re-create the colors to use in their own web and print designs. Now, all 1250 color combinations are provided on disk in both Illustrator and Photoshop files for Mac and PC so you can sample the swatches with the eyedropper tool, rather than having to type the RGB and CMYK percentages.

The first Designer's Guide to Color book provided 500 historic color combinations from the Victorian, Art Deco, Atomic 50s, Psychedelic 60s and Current periods. The second book provided 750 combinations of colors derived from the art and design of Asia, Africa, Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle and Far East, as well as from the USA. The Designer's Guide to Color Combinations CD-ROM contains none of the interesting and amusing text captions, the sample layouts that show how to arrange the colors, or the many wonderful illustrations from the two books. What it does contain are 1250 sets of scintillating color combinations covering every conceivable mood and manner from warm and passionate to super cool. The CD-ROM is a terrific companion piece to the books enabling you to quickly locate the swatch sets from any page, open only the files you wish and copy the colors right into your own designs. If you do not own either of the books, the CD-ROM is still a fantastic way to browse for great color combinations by opening any files at random and selecting your favorites.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eyecandy of great inspirational and practical value........2004-04-26

This is the second volume, following The Designer's Guide To Color Combination. I own both and regularly browse them, just for pleasure or for practical use.

For artists, designers and the general public interested in color combinations, this marvellous book offers a cross cultural approach to the use of color. Each page depicts an artists piece, which may be paintings, illustration or fabric, with a small description and why the color use is interesting. The main colors in the piece are then broken down into CMYK and RGB values. (For non computer artists: this means the values you have to type in graphic software to get the colors depicted).

And if all this is not enough, there is also a second example on each page with a variation on the palette of the main piece, but with the main colors structured in a different way, which may give another mood.

Add to each page, even more creatieve variations on the main piece, and you get an enormous amount of color combinations.

However, this book will not teach you color theory. The author takes a intuitive subjective approach which does not go any further than 'this is eye catching'. But when you are from the school 'I don't mind about the theory, just show me the pictures', this book is simply the best you can get.

If there is one negative thing I could say about this book: because the RGB and CMYK values are given for each piece it would be even more practical for computer users to add a cd, so they could straight away add all the palettes as files to their graphic software.

Apart from this: this is book which you'll browse and browse again.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Time-Waster (I Mean That in the Best Way).......2003-12-14

A practical book, a beautiful book and a wonderful resource. Even if you have no need for a graphic design book, this would make a great coffee table book to impress your friends. For the graphic designer, fresh color combinations can (and have for me) changed the direction of an entire project. I work with small business clients in a wide range of businesses and have found this book invaluable for starting new projects, establishing an identity or finding a few neat color combos for a flyer. This book is worth the money!

3 out of 5 stars Global Color.......2003-11-20

This book looks beautiful and does have many color combinations to inspire. I was disappointed by the lack of information on the background of why the countries covered would favor the colors they do. Also, Canada was not covered and sarcasm written about their tardy submission-so all Canadians should suffer because of this? The book would be useful if you have a number of color references already as this uses a different approach.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any visual artist.......2002-11-19

Along with its companion book in the series - The Designer's Guide to Color Combinations, The Designer's Guide to "Global" Color Combinations forms an essential reference for any visual artist or print publisher. I recommend these books to my students for their concept, storyboarding, color design, and animation layout work.

Each page breaks down a period, era, or style, and analyzes its color makeup with color and contrast swatches, CMYK data for each color, and a series of various combinations that are possible using the specified palette.

An artist could spend hours testing and comparing colors. Or they could look through these pages and find a color scheme in minutes.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty, but not helpful.......2002-10-24

The first in this series was a marvelous reference book. This one, however, seems more of an excuse for the author to "write" rather than illustrate color usage. The examples in the book are adequate, but not as comprehensive of a treatment of the various geographical locations represented as one would like. The commentary is superfluous and at times irritating.

Not a bad reference for color combo inspiration, but overall disappointing and does not live up to its predecessor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly powerful.......2007-01-11

This book is an incredible reference for color theory and history. The inclusion of full panels of color reference make it one of the most useful books on the subject I've ever found.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2006-02-24

I am in fashion design and have found the color palettes very useful in designing collections. Also, the text is informative without being boring.

5 out of 5 stars Great color palettes.......2005-07-09

I'm a graphic designer and this is a great book to look for color palettes. It explains what period the palette is from and gives you cultural information from that period. The palettes are different and beautiful. Margaret Walsh is a highly respected woman for her color knowledge.

3 out of 5 stars Unwieldly and Difficult To Use.......2003-12-23

The dual spiral constuction of this book makes any it practically impossible to read through the text while keeping the color swatches in view. I find the book to be shabbily put together - the spiral separated from the binding after one gentle use, so I was glad to have picked it up at a bargain book outlet.

There is some useful information in there, but getting it all together is not simple.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent analysis of color palettes across art history.......1999-01-06

This is an excellent book if you want to compare and analyze the basic color palettes used by various art movements and at different times in history. The unique double spiral bound book allows you to look at color illustrations and flip the palettes independently so you to compare and contrast palettes and artwork. I think this would be useful for artists and designers of all sorts including theatre designers.

Book Description

The eye, the camera's lens, and the computer screen all treat color differently. This important addition to the designer's reference library helps resolve the differences among the numerous media that contemporary designers work with every day. Comprehensive in scope, it brings together key elements of color theory, practice, and application, addressing a wide range of issues specific to graphic design in both print and digital media. Beyond step-by-step techniques for managing color in modern graphic design practice, Designer's Color Manual also addresses topics which help designers understand color in a variety of disciplines, looking at historical color systems, color in art, and the psychology of color, among dozens of other topics. Author and designer Tom Fraser also takes other graphics-related practices into account -- interior design, digital rendering, packaging and merchandise design -- aiding the designer in mastering the far-reaching effects of color in almost any project. Heavily illustrated with over 1,000 color images, Designer's Color Manual addresses an area that's been gray for too long in the full-color world of contemporary design.

3 out of 5 stars Error in book.......2006-07-04

A book dedicated to colors really can't afford making a major mistake as found on page 26 where Cyan is described as the mixture of Red and Blue. Not only in words, but also in a colorful RGB model. (Cyan is a mixture of Green and Blue). I just bought this book to get a clear introduction in (the theory of) colors and being and this mistake confused me a lot. Thank the Spirit for Wikipedia :).
Anyway, I still recommend this book because it tries to explore allmost every aspect of colors and I like the design !!
Jan Hoogesteijn, Amsterdam Netherlands

5 out of 5 stars A joy to read, especially for the beginner.......2006-03-30

I bought this book because I don't have an arts background, but am starting to expand my efforts in the field of graphic design. This book is laid out in a superb format. Each sub topic spans only a single double page, and there are plenty of pictures and captions to illustrate and reinforce the points raised.

The subject area is broad, and many different aspects of colour are covered ranging from the history and perception of colour to issues such as colour blindness right though to some common Photoshop techniques for colour correction.

As I sat holding this pleasantly heavy book in my hand it occured to me that I felt as if I was being drawn back into my childhood, staring with fascination into those "how things work" encyclopedia-style books with cut-out cross-sections of machines and other interesting tidbits. Do you remember how you could just keep looking at those types of books time and time and again, and just look at the pictures and captions if you wanted to?

This is a book that I feel I could put on my coffee table rather than my reference bookshelf, but that by no means that it is not useful as a reference, at least for me. If you are looking for detailed examination of something specific then you may want to choose a different book, but if you want to get a broad overview and awareness of something we are surrounded by all the time (colour!), then I think this is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Easy step-by-step techniques for using color in a design.......2004-10-10

Color is the foundation of successful design, and so many designer's guides focus on the finer art of using color effectively. Tom Fraser and Adam Banks' Designer's Color Manual brings together key basic concepts of color theory for a title which focuses on the marriage between theory and application. From color psychology and the underlying effects of color on mental state and observational arts to color in craft and the social environment, introductory concepts evolve into easy step-by-step techniques for using color in a design environment. Add over 1,000 color images and you have a winning text in Designer's Color Manual.

I'm not much of a designer when it comes to using color, but this guide didn't help me out.
The color schemes don't look very attractive, and the usage of the guide isn't very clear to me.
All in all, I would recommend using Adobe's (online) Kuler application instead of this set.

Book Description

Containing some 300 illustrations and minimum text, this is the most complete guide and study of color rendering of interiors ever compiled. Gifted teacher Wei Dong visually instructs readers step by step in every rendering technique, and provides hundreds of examples of common elements found in residential and commercial interiors. Remarkably broad in scope, from concept sketches to fully executed presentations, Color Rendering is also exhaustive in its coverage of the materials, finishes, and objects found in interiors.

4 out of 5 stars Great for students!.......2007-09-07

I am a senior interior design student and this book was recommended by one of my instructors. It gives good, very basic step-by-step instructions for rendering common building materials with different mediums (watercolor, color pencil, and markers). One issue that I did find was that some of the illustrations don't exactly follow the written instructions, but because of the format, that's a pretty small issue. This is a book that I'd recommend for beginning design students, but more advanced students may find this book a little too basic.

5 out of 5 stars Color Rendering Tips.......2001-12-14

I was introduced to Wei Dong's book in an Interior Design class on Presentation Techniques. It is an excellent book for all but the most experienced Interior Renderer. It focuses on the use of color markers and comes complete with practice exercises that help build your skill and confidence. I highly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars dissapointment.......2001-11-16

i recieved this book this book in the mail and had been eagerly awaiting its arrival. i don't know how else to express it other than i was very dissapointed. i have see Michael Doyle's fist edition of his Color Drawing and my original intent was to buy the second edition of that, but when i saw this book with its raving editorial review i decided to try this one instead. i mean who could turn down a book with a review like "the most complete guide and study of color rendering of interiors ever compiled" and "exhaustive in its coverage" i thought that this book was going to be wonderful. i think that i might have found it useful if i had never even picked up colored pencils and markers before. There was very little rendering of total interiors just objects or things that might go in an interior. If you are really looking for a complete source then i really wouldn't recomend this book, only a just starting out beginner might find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Referance Book.......2001-03-10

An excellent reference book for all designers. It gives great advise and tips for all forms of rendering both interiors and exteriors. The step by step instructions were not as informative as they could have been, but overall an excellent book for any designer.

Book Description

With over 1000 color combinations, this remarkable book assists with color choice in several important ways: it takes the guesswork out of putting colors together by showing in advance what they will look like; innovative color schemes provide new ideas; tint percentages for every color insure correct reproduction. This book is meant primarily as a professional tool for anyone associated with design or the design process. Because of the inclusion of screen values of the four process colors, this book will make perhaps its greatest contribution to those who realize their design through some printed process -- graphic designers, certainly; also environmental designers, advertising and package designers and probably some members of architectural firms who become involved in printed media. In a much broader sense, the book has real value to anyone who needs to confirm color suggestions and examples presented in a straightforward, pure and neutral way.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-08-28

Reading the other reviews, I expected this book to have some color direction in it. But it is just a color swatch book. The colors that are included are so minimal, this book was useless to me.

4 out of 5 stars One handy piece of knowledge for the aspiring designer.......2000-08-26

This book is simply essential if you come into design without knowledge of color. It also has some useful color combinations, small tips to understand color more fully, and gorgeous pictures. It is a good investment for any kind of artist.
