Disappointed in shipping condition..........2007-10-08
I have purchased many items from Amazon and this is the first complaint. We bought this very expensive book set for our grandson as a birthday gift. The 13 books came in its own display box which was severly damaged in shipment. His Birthday was this weekend and had to give the gift before retuning it. For the price of books and not even free shipping they should have been packaged more securely.
Haven't seen it yet.......2007-09-12
I purchased this product for my granddaughter for Christmas, so of course I haven't seen it. However the service from Amazon was great. From ordering to reciving this product we've had great service
A Series of Unfortunate Events, Books 1-13.......2007-07-24
I think the series of unfortunate event is really good because the author tell the story in a fun way, unlike other stories, this book is really exciting. When I finish a chapter, I want to keep reading on because I wanted to know the ending quickly. I really like the character - violet on this story, she is really smart and calm all the times. I think the ending is really cool because it did not exactly tell us what happen, it leave us space for us to think
Unfortunate Events.......2007-06-13
A series of unfortunate events book one, by Limonene snicket
Have you ever been in a foster home? Have you ever experienced deaths like your mom or dad? This story is about three kids, violet, klaws, and sunny. Violet is the one how likes to invent things. Klaus is the one who is hand with words. Sunny is just good at biting. Then their uncle who is after their fortune their parents left them. He is very mean and will mar4ry violet for her money. If she doesn't sine sunny dies. Will she sine or not read the book and find out.
I liked the book because it is entertaining and because you never know what will happen next. Also because it is full of mystery. Last because there is always an answer for your question. I hope you read the book "A series of unfortunate event book one."
Best Books Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-02
I have read a lot in my ten years of life, but out of all those books,A Series Of Unfortunate Events have been the best. Some of it is funny, some of it is scary, and some of it is a little weird. If you mix that all together, you get 13 wonderful books. I wouldn't reccomend it for kids under 10 though, because like I said it is scary, although it's not always as scary as Lemony Snicket says it is. Some of it is a little violent, actually. Other than that they are great books. Oh, and people have been complaining about how some of the pages are uneven. That is how they are supposed to be! The End still leaves you with some questions, but when you find out the answer to a question your like, "O MY GOSH! VFD!"! And some times Lemony Snicket does something very unexpected, like in the 6th book when Esme Squalor pushes them down the dark elevator shaft, the next 2 pages were nothing but black, which was very scary because then I was reading in the car at night with no light but my book light. There are 2 reasons I am going to stop now. Reason #1: That is pretty much all you need to know, and Reasom #2 My hands ache from typing for 20 minutes strait. BYE BYE AND HAPPY READING!! :)

Picking up from the final pages of the Pentultimate Peril, this farewell installment to the ridiculously (and deservedly!) popular A Series of Unfortunate Events places our protagonists right where we last left them: on a large, wooden boat in the middle of the ocean, trapped with their nemesis Count Olaf, who has armed himself with a helmet-full of deadly Medusoid Mycelium.
The situation quickly and--this being the Baudelaires--predictably deteriorates. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves tossed in a storm so terrible that our beloved narrator spends four pages describing how he cannot describe it. From this point on, fans of the series' smarty-pants wordplay and acrobatic narrative can rest assured that they're in for more of the same (and how) in this 368-page finale, and Daniel Handler's deadpan Snicket continues to tutor a generation in self-referential humor (including one particularly funny bit regarding three very short men carrying a large, flat piece of wood, painted to look like a living room). Snicket notes, of course, that if you read the entire series, "your only reward will be 170 chapters of misery in your library and countless tears in your eyes."
There's one big question, though, for anyone who's made it through "the thirteenth chapter of the thirteenth volume in this sad history": is the final book a fitting end? That question is probably best-answered by one of The End's most oft-repeated phrases: It depends on how you look at it. Those looking for conclusive resolution to the series' many, many mysteries may be disappointed, although some big questions do get explicit answers. Not surprisingly for a work so deliberately labyrinthine, though, even the absence of an answer can be sort of an answer--and reaction to The End can be something of a Rorschach test for readers. Or, as Lemony Snicket says, "Perhaps you don't know yet what the end really means." --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Like an off–key violin concert, the Roman Empire, or food poisoning, all things must come to an end. Thankfully, this includes A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. The thirteenth and final installment in the groundbreaking series will answer readers' most burning questions: Will Count Olaf prevail? Will the Baudelaires survive? Will the series end happily? If there's nothing out there, what was that noise?
Then again, why trouble yourself with unfortunate resolutions? Avoid the thirteenth and final book of Lemony Snicket's international bestselling series and you'll never have to know what happens.

Appropriate but unsatisfying ending.......2007-10-18
The beginning of The End, Book 13 in A Series of Unfortunate Events, finds the Baudelaire orphans adrift with Count Olaf in an effort to escape the fire they started at the Hotel Denouement at the end of Book 12. They only started the fire because they needed to send a signal to the other members of VFD that the hotel was not safe, but nonetheless they feel bad for doing such a thing. They wash up on a coastal shelf and are approached by local islanders who live there. The siblings quickly find out that the islanders are, in fact, all the victims of former shipwrecks who have discovered that everything, eventually, washes up on the shore of that island. The Baudelairs must decide if the island is a safe place for them to be, if they can trust their new neighbors, and how to deal with the fact that Count Olaf, finally, is being considered the villain he truly is.
The children quickly learn that the leader of the island, Ishmael, is hiding things from the other residents. He has a food supply and cooking implements that he keeps secret, there are books on the island despite the fact that he says there are not, and he hides many items with which Violet could make interesting inventions that would lead to a more comfortable island life. The children also discover a book in which their parents previously kept a journal of their time on the island. The Baudelairs become more confused than ever and ultimately are faced with life or death decisions for which they must once again use their quick wits.
All along the author warns us that we should not continue to read the series because it will not end happily. I am sorry to say that he was right. In this respect the conclusion to the series is appropriate, but disappointingly so. It just kind of ends. We are left with more questions than ever before and *SPOILERS* the book ends with the children set adrift to maybe or maybe not rejoin society off the island. We don't find out if they ever see the Quagmire triplets again, we don't find out if they are able to access their fortune so they can sustain themselves, and they are impossibly left to raise a newborn by themselves. *END SPOILERS* The ending feels as though the author did not know how to end it and so he simply did. At the same time, it is vague and random as is most of the series, so the ending does not entirely stand out as out of place.
Overall, I think the series ended on a much lower note than it started out. The writing and vocabulary continued to be extremely creative, but the plot ceased being entertaining. It was a long way to go for not much of a reward.
Unsatisfying.......2007-09-24
I had such high hopes for at least a few answers to all the superbly intertwined questions developed in the previous 12 books. Unfortunately, after finishing "The End," very few were truly answered, and a long laundry list of questions remain dangling in the wind waiting for resolution. In fact I feel like this book created more questions than it answered. I can appreciate the author's style and desire to leave some of the resolution up to the reader, but in my opinion, it was too much, and I was left very unsatisfied. After 12 books of building suspense, "The End" is very anticlimactic.
Really fun book to read with children.......2007-08-26
I almost didn't read this book after watching the dreadful movies, but it was recommended, so I gave it a shot. I like to pick fun books and read them with my children. My 8 and 10 year old sons have really enjoyed these books, and it keeps them interested in reading. I have been hooked on Harry Potter, and these books do not captivate my interest anywhere near to the same degree, but they are a really fun series that I have had a great time reading with my kids.
A tacky ending to a great series.......2007-08-25
I've read most of the Series of unfortunate events books twice and after finishing the 12th one, I was very excited for the last to come out. The end of the 12th book sets up a great stage for the series end, were all our burning questions will be answered.
So, I get the 13th one the day it comes out. I read the book non-stop, waiting for the grand finale that will reveal everything.
So what did the ending reveal? nothing good. It really only reveals one thing, and its not even something I would have thought about if they hadn't brought it up. The only redeeming thing about the ending is that count olaf dies, which I'm sure everybody was eager for.
I would rather have Lemony Snicket release a FAQ answering all the mysteries in the series than having read this book
The World is Quiet Here.......2007-08-21
This book is so much more then i can put down. It is all so speachlessly true and powerful. I cried 4 times-and then went into shock! It's like Lemony says my thoughts. It is all so emotional-everything from Beatrice to the RING. V.F.D is expecialy important. I can not think of anything it needs. I promise that this book will be more then anything you have ever read. You won't be disapointed in the least. Please choose to purchase this book. If you don't you'll need help. That way you can learn the mystery of the ring and all of the other secrets that are dangerous to you- rather you know them or not. He warned you from the very bad beginning that it might be more then you can handle.

Inside AutoCad 12 For DOS ISBN 1562050559
While a co-worker was spending hundreds of dollars to
learn AutoCad
at the local collage, I learned as much at
the same pace at home with
this fine book. It should be sub-titled as a tutorial. The book begins
assuming you know nothing about AutoCad,
and carefully explains in a
straight-forward method all you need to know. Everything is done in
sequence so each excercise teaches
new commands to be used in following
drawings. It is a great primer
for new users learning 2-D basics, and I
have shared it with experienced users at work as a reference manual for
2-D
and 3-D drawings. The book comes with a disk with programs
to help
you learn which was a real time-saver for me. I would recommend this book
to all beginning and professional
AutoCad users. I have other titles from
The New Riders Publishing Company, and they have all been a very good investment.

Book Description
The most critically acclaimed of all of Dr. Frank H. Netter's works, this 8-volume/13-book reference collection includes: hundreds of world-renowned illustrations by Frank H. Netter, MD; informative text by recognized medical experts; anatomy, physiology, and pathology; and diagnostic and surgical procedures.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing set of books..........2000-11-28
My father is a doctor (both MD and PhD). He used this set of books once to explain anatomy to me so that I could understand a medical condition we were discussing. The drawings are incredible, Netter must have been a true genius with a passion for his work. What an excellent resource!
The greatest anatomy reference available.......1998-10-14
I am an aerospace physician and I routinely use the Netter series, not just for my own personal reference, but to illustrate to patients the anatomy, as well as the pathology of disease processes that they may be facing. It is a well-organized series of illustrations, with excellent descriptions. It is an excellent consolidation of all the commonly required information regarding any given disease process, and functions well as an all-around reference, not just for anatomy. Though some of the text does need to be updated, it still serves as the benchmark of illustrative anatomy and pathology, and is an invaluable addition to the library of all medical personnel, both medical students and physicians alike.
Excellent reference works for medical education.......1998-05-25
I have the whole CIBA set of Frank Netter illustrations, and treasure them both for their fine artistic work and their value as medical reference resources. I found them invaluable during my medical school days, especially for my neuroanatomy classes, and still make reference to them from time to time in my clinical practice. The texts for some of the older volumes need a little updating, but the illustrations are still pertinent, helpful as ever. These are helpful adjuncts to medical students and residents alike.

not up to Hamiltons usual standard.......2007-09-22
In all honesty, as a Hamilton fan and a fan of the anita blake series, I still have to say that "Mica" is quite a disappointment for all of us who was hoping for some alone time with our favourite leopard. Not much time to speak of at all, the book feels more like s hort story and ends before it even had time to begin. Though on th positive side it does have more of an actual story to it that the recent books in the "blake-series" as Hamilton has a tendency to get too wrapped up on moments to be able to focus on the book as a whole. I can however add that the folloing book "the harlequin" is a big step in the right direction so I will say there is still hope for us Anite Blake fans.
i love micah&nathanial!!!.......2007-09-01
i have followed this series in every book and i have been fascinated, intrigued and amused by the wonderful diverse characters, the poignancy and the love.there is a depth of love with micah and nathanial,a gentleness and tenderness and sweetness that is soo very hard to find any more since it seems most writers consider these emotions weaknesses.don't miss this novel .....
And the spiral continues..........2007-08-04
Laurell...what WERE you thinking?!
As a fan from your earliest works I shivered with each page, turning one after another until I realized with the closing of the back cover that this book had not improved from page one to the end. Is this the beginning of the end? A nail in your literary coffin, being hammered deep by a huge and heavy sledge hammer of fan and reader dispair?
I want you to know I resurrected faith against all who claimed it could not happen...faith that you will put The Anita Blake series back on track, show us more interaction between the characters in a verbal fashion rather than an olympic form of shagging anything that breathes (or doesn't *ick*). Where was the perverse humor we have come to love in your Anita Blake series? The quick come-backs and sly sniping? The slick patter? The mystifying and sometimes terrifying worlds within worlds?
"MICAH" was a sad shadow of those earlier triumphs and I hope, and pray, HARLEQUIN is a far better gift.
I am just one voice crying out, into the dark, for the rest of your readers. Can you hear us?
reading.......2007-07-20
This book was just ok in the reading area but the shipper was the faster sender I have ever deal with on the Internet.
The book was just way too short, making it like a chapter in size when compared to the other books I have read of this writer. WHAT THE HECK Happen here? I would like to drink more in the area of Micah but here I only got half of a taste.
Semi-interesting .......2007-07-16
I'm not quite sure that we needed a Micah book. He is the least intriguing character in the Anitaverse (aside from our beloved pet Nate, of course), and all that we ever seem to hear about him is that he's got kitty cat eyes, he's as short as Anita, and he's got a big wang.
This would have gotten less stars, but the how-it-came-to-be wereleopard story and the graveyard scene saved it. I found Salvia's questioning humorous and interesting. Franklin's susceptibility to psychic energy was a nice touch.
Overall, for a book that I wasn't looking forward to reading, it wasn't bad at all.

Customer Reviews:
Once Bitten............2007-10-05
Imagine the world as you know it gone, and you are constantly on the run. Pursuing you slowly but surely are a horde of exhaustless dead. In this graphic novel The Walking Dead 2, our little band of ragtag survivors finds themselves in a prison, literally. Surrounded by a fence, which keeps the dead out, they must now clear the grounds of any "leftovers" which might be hiding in dark corners. It's an enormous task. The good news is that they have a lot of food, and room to move around. The bad news is that the prison was still occupied by a couple of prisoners and they have no idea what crime these men committed to be there. Trust isn't an issue in a world where everyone must have each others back, including strangers. Each person there has lost someone, and human nature is to cling to anything you have left. Families are formed, friendships are tested, and enemies are quickly dispatched. The new rule is "kill and you die" which means kill one of the living and you will become one of the dead, but not the walking dead, just plain dead.
I wont give anything away, but I will say that I was completely shocked, disgusted, appalled, giddy, distressed, moved and keyed up by this novel. I know that they could never put this on film because they wouldn't ever get permission for such staggering "kick in the teeth" carnage. At one point I had to just put the book down and wait for the blood to come back to my face.
I can't stress enough how richly this graphic novel is drawn. The artistry, the sheer genius of it and the rawness just oozes off the pages. I have seen zombies in films that cannot mirror the ones that are on these pages. Their eyes are filmy white, skin peeled back by the rays of the sun, maggots dropping with every shuffled step, putrid organs now black with rot trailing behind. Their fingers, and arms and legs are bent at angles the human form wasn't meant to. It's a feast for the eyes, as well as the brain.
Dead and loving it.......2007-09-17
Robert Kirkman's ongoing zombie saga continues in this second hardcover collection, which collects issues 13-24 of the series (otherwise known as volumes 3 and 4 of the TPB's). As the story picks up, cop Rick Grimes, along with his pregnant wife and young son, and a group of fellow survivors, have found what appears to be an abandoned prison, which they plan to make into a sanctuary as the zombie plague continues to wreak havoc. What also occurs in this TPB plants the seed for chaotic future events, including the coming of a mysterious survivor named Michonne, and a big revelation in regards to the effects of the plague. Charlie Adlard's pencils are once again more than solid, with Cliff Rathburn's gray tones providing a stark look to the proceedings. Horror comics are rarely this good, but Kirkman has crafted a work of horror comic genius here that is clearly inspired by the works of the great George Romero. Just as his films displayed, Kirkman proves that the scariest thing about a zombie outbreak aren't the dead themselves, but the humans in the middle of it all. All in all, of you liked the first hardcover volume of the Walking Dead in the least, this second collection is a must own. For newcomers to the series, things only get better from this point forward.
Save the Trees........2007-07-25
If you're thinking about buying this, then you probably read the first one and liked it. In which case, then you're probably okay with terribly written graphic novels. Proceed.
I am still hooked and enjoying this series.......2007-06-12
The group is trying to make a life at a former prison. They are working out a way to adapt to the new life with zombies. They do not expect to be rescued because it has been over a year. I will be waiting for the third book in
November.
Another win!!.......2007-05-28
Just picked this up and DEVOURED it!! My only complaint is that I need more! What a great read and a wonderful zombie story! Highly recommended!!

A Dishy Read.......2007-08-27
Davidson can always be counted on for a good read. The opening scene of this book is particularly well written and unfolds in with riveting and intense detail. Compared to the other books in the series I think the story is a little grittier than previous books. I'd have liked a little more interaction with Marla. I like the way the characters age and grow during the course of the series. The introduction of Gus, so different from Arch, is interesting. With the exception of her husband Tom being too accommodating, the interactions with the police seem more realistic than in previous novels. My favorite part of this book is the way Goldie dishes up dirt on multiple characters when she starts digging. I also like the recipes being placed at the end of the book where it's easy to find them if I want to try one.
Not one of her best........2007-08-26
I have read all the books in this series and have always enjoyed them. They are quick, light and fast read. But this one made me feel like I had skipped a couple of pages or missed something in the last book. The introduction of the Charlie Baker character had me skipping back through the pages, I had know idea who he was and Davidson wrote it like we should all be familar with him????Then as the story unfolded she started to explain who he was, but more of that should have been done in the beginning. The Routt family were more annoying then sympathetic. The psator character wasn't developed enough.I think I cared less about the characters then in the past and there were too many of them and her usual characters (Marla, her son) were shoved in here in there to fill in.
Expensive Recipe Book.......2007-08-26
After gamely slogging through 232 pages of Goldy's feeling really, really bad about her friend Dusty's death, I skipped to the end. It turned out that two key characters hadn't been introduced in the first 232 pages (of 420), and that another character had only been shallowly introduced and characterized. Following the obligatory scene with Goldy's life being threatened, there followed a couple of pages of explanation of the perp's motivation that read like a plot outline. Too bad the book didn't live up to the outline!
The paperback places all of the recipes at the end of the book, instead of sprinkled through the text, which is a more interesting and fun arrangement. The recipes are the only thing that I can recommend--without having kitchen-tested any. However, I doubt that I will be purchasing another Davidson Culinary Mystery after having spent $7.99 for this turkey of a mystery novel.
Series Slipping.......2007-07-19
This series seems to have been going downhill for awhile now, and this book didn't do anything to reverse that trend.
I used to enjoy all the characters aside from spoiled rotten Arch, so it says something that he was the least annoying character in this book.
Goldy is a caterer. Tom is a cop. Yet he thinks nothing of letting her stick her nose into investigations, allows her to look over evidence, go out and interview people, etc. It just isn't realistic. Then again, the character of Tom isn't enjoyable in the least, as he comes across as Mr. Perfect -- the cop who cooks gourmet meals, polishes the furniture and goes into the station late during an investigation in order to help Goldy clean up a venue for a catering assignment. I really don't like when authors give their main characters flaws to seem more realistic, then ruin the effect by giving them a perfect spouse.
Speaking of flaws, Goldy's continues to be the way she cowers and caters to Arch. It's just unbearable. And with Arch's new brother in the mix, I expect future installments to give us twice the dose of Goldy's lack of spine.
Even the characters I usually enjoy most, Julian and Marla, were annoying in this book.
I hope the next installment is better, but I'm not holding out much hope.
Dark Tort CD (Goldy Bear Culinary Mysteries).......2007-06-12
Of this series, my first on CD. I missed the recipes. I know, they are read to you at the end of the "book," but I listen and drive, so it was not a big help. They could be included in the box, or list a site where one can go to DL the ones you want.

In their first adventure as Master Librarians, Jack and Annie go to the city of Pompeii to bring back an ancient story that is in danger of being lost forever. Little do they know they are saving the myth of Hercules! But before they can find it, the town's volcano erupts in a mighty explosion. Just when things look hopeless, Jack and Annie get some unexpected help from a certain mythic hero - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Excellent read for my 7-year-old.......2007-09-15
My daughter could not put this book down once she started reading it. She loves the MAGIC TREE HOUSE series so much!
Historically accurate.......2007-06-21
We paired this with the Discovery Kids Magazine on Pompeii and found out that this book is a great way to find out about Pompeii and what happened, not just as a tourist attraction. It really puts kids in the moment of the time period. Every detail, down to the arrangement of the city was accurate. You can actually find a map replicating Pompeii and show your child where Jack and Annie went. Wow. Talk about subject integration! You know it is a great book when you can go down the list of Bloom's Taxonomy and use the book to create activities for every level.
We are leaving today to buy every book in the series.
Perfect for homeschooling.
MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-02
My 1st grader hates to put them down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. When he was in kindergarten, the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not given her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
Vacation Under the Valcano - Magic Tree House #13.......2006-01-29
Shortly before leaving for vacation, Jack and Annie remembered that they needed to go to the magic tree house to solve a mystery. Morgan said "your aventure is going to the Roman times you need to find this book or it will be lost forever""WOW! I always wanted to go to the Roman times this will be fun Annie" said Jack.
The magic tree house takes them to the seaside town of Pompeii during Roman times, which was 2,000 years ago. Many Romans traveled to Pompeii for vacation. They built large houses called villas and planted groves of olive trees on the slopes of a nearby mountain called Mount Vesuvius.
As they walked into the town of Pompeii, they noticed there were no birds and the stream under the bridge was dried up. Once in Pompeii, a soothsayer said "go home". Jack and Annie walked by the town forum, public baths and the Temple of Jupiter while looking for the library.
When they get to the library, they start looking for the book "Vir Fortissinus in Mundo". After finding the book, Jack opened the door and noticed everything crashing down in front of them. The ground started to shake as Mount Vesuvius erupted into a deadly volcano. "That is what the soothsayer meant" said Jack.
Jack and Annie ran from the library and headed back to the tree house. As they ran, a great cloud of pumice, ash, and burning rock formed over the city. When it rained down on Pompeii,it coverd the town. They used pillows to cover their heads from the falling ash.
The tree house was in the olive grove on the side of the mountain. Jack and Annie were running towards the volcano while everyone else was running away from it. When they got to the dried-up stream, the brige. They were trapped in the pumice, when a big, strong man named Hercules saved them. He pulled them from the pumice and took them to the other side of the stream.
Jack and Annie made it to the magic tree house, which took them back home. Morgan made them Master Librarians and they went on vacation with their family.
Volcanos wow!.......2005-10-25
My son and I have been reading the Magic Tree House series for the last couple months and we love them. These are the first books that my son has taken a real interest into, checking them out and reading them on his own. Vacations under the Volcano is our favorite one so far. After checking out a bunch from the library we finally decided to buy a set, and he was so disappointed that this one wasn't part of the set that he bought it seperatly on his own. This book has sparked a whole new interest for him.
I like that this story is based on a real historical event. As opposed to some of the others, like Sunset of the Sabertooth, which is one of my least favorites. As far as the danger goes, which another reviewer mentioned, I think Mary does a great job keeping the stories exciting. They would really become dull if the kids only strolled through meadows. For another scary one try Earthquakes in the Early Morning.
On a side note, its good to read them in order, but we didn't and you definatly don't have too.

Book Description
Looming on the border of Portugal and Spain is the fortress of Badajoz. To lead an assault on its thick, sheer walls and battlements is suicide, yet Richard Sharpe must lead one. Inside the walls are his wife and daughter, and only he can save them. Outside is the misshapen, vengeance-crazed Sergeant Obadiah Haskewill, a man determined to kill Sharpe. Sharpe knows that in the heat of battle only the cold steel of his battered sword and the ruthless bloodlust of a soldier at war will protect him from the danger of both sides. Third in a series taking Sharpe all the way to Waterloo.
"Consistently exciting...these are wonderful novels." (Stephen King)

Another good Sharpe book.......2007-07-13
In the early months of 1812, Wellington led his army to French-occupied Spain. Captain Richard Sharpe participates in the storming of the fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. The siege of Badajoz is bloody for the British army. They failed twice before and now Wellington wants the fortress at any cost. As Wellington moves on Badajoz, a new Colonel and a new Captain arrive from England and the command of Sharpe's Light Company has been given to this new Captain who bought the promotion. Sergeant Hakeswill, who is ruthless, cruel, indestructible and Sharpe's oldest and toughest enemy also joins the company. Hakeswill could do anything to terrorise everyone in the company, including Sharpe and Harper. Sharpe desperately fights for his company, and for Teresa, the woman he loves and with her is Antonia, their daughter, both blocked in the besieged city of Badajoz.
Again, Mr Cornwell did an excellent job in Sharpe's company. I would highly recommend this book to any Cornwell fan and any history buff.
A high-water mark in the Rifleman Sharpe series.......2007-03-06
Bernard Cornwell's series of Sharpe novels has delighted countless readers over the years. Cornwell is (famously or infamously, depending on your perspective) writing these novels out of historical sequence, so even though while "Sharpe's Company" is in the middle of the Sharpe series chronologically, it is among the earliest books Cornwell wrote about Wellington's favorite rogue. And it is easily among Cornwell's best books ever - thrilling, ghastly, funny, and with perhaps Cornwell's greatest villain, Obadiah Hakeswill.
[Full disclosure - I read "Sharpe's Company" after reading the terribly disappointing "Hannibal Rising," and have Cornwell up on a bit of a pedestal right now. A gushing review follows.]
Like all soldiers from the stews of London, born without name or wealth, Richard Sharpe started life in the British army as a lowly private. While serving with Lord Wellington (then merely Colonel Wellesley), Sharpe had the misfortune of serving under Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, a grossly fat and evil man who knows that he cannot die - he even survived a hanging! Taking an instant hatred to Sharpe, Hakeswill has Sharpe flogged in events chronicled in Cornwell's "India Trilogy," a sub-set of the Sharpe novels. Sharpe swears revenge and thinks he has killed Hakeswill off . . . only to have the insane Sergeant return in "Sharpe's Company."
Hakeswill is the kind of man who will trump up flogging charges on a soldier in order extort sexual favors from the soldier's desperate wife . . . and then kill her and frame her husband. Truly evil, Hakeswill's love for rape is only matched by his hatred of Sharpe. So what happens when Hakeswill comes across Sharpe's lover, the gorgeous partisan Teresa? He must have her, both to possess her beauty and to ruin Sharpe.
And also, what is to happen when Sharpe finds himself demoted when a wealthier man buys his Captaincy and Hakeswill is put in charge of the 95th Rifles? A mere Lieutenant, Sharpe still outranks Hakeswill, but just barely. This gives Hakeswill the opportunity to ruin the Rifles, the only other thing Sharpe holds as dear as Teresa.
Things are dire enough for Sharpe, what with the return of the mad, gibbering Sergeant. But he must also contend with Wellington's siege of Badajoz, perhaps the most impregnable French-held fort in all of Spain. Even the redoubtable Major Hogan despairs of British boots ever getting inside that mountain of rock and guns. And yet Sharpe must lead men inside, if not only for his honor and to earn his Captain's bars, but also to save Teresa and his new-born daughter, Antonia, who live inside the fortress.
Cornwell writes a battle scene as well as anyone, and he has never been in finer form than with his description of the horrific siege. Perhaps shockingly for a proud Brit, Cornwell pulls no punches at the terrible crimes committed by the British soldiers once they crack open those walls - the robberty, rape and murder of the innocents is one of the most depressing passages you will ever read.
For high adventure, slightly leavened with comedy, you will not find anything better than "Sharpe's Company." Read these novels in order - don't start with this book, because the characters will make much more sense if you have the entire back-story.
A Great Series.......2006-08-15
This is another entry on the Sharpe series. It is fun, entertaining and very readable. Cornwell's research is as excellent as usual. He takes some licenses for the shake of the story and continuity, but this is OK. Some people are outraged by the portrait of some of the real historical characters, but historical characters are rarely depicted accurately in historical fiction, so I think this can be forgiven. Besides, usually a more serious account of these characters is given at the end of the book on the Historical Note.
Many people insist in compare this series with Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander. I don't think this is fair for any of the series, they are different entities. What they have in common is that once you start you may get hooked and devour one book after another...
And in the literary world today that is a rare and marvelous thing.
Hawkeswill kills everything including this book.......2006-08-11
I've eagerly poured through this great series, but was sorely disappointed to see a re-appearance of Sgt. Hawkeswill. His presence ads nothing to this book, other than a great unbelievable diversion.
Sharpe mutters about his life-long desire to kill his arch nemesis Sgt. Hawkeswill at least every 200 pages of every book in the series. Then Sharpe, who has not hesitated to kill before, finds Hawkeswill alone in a barn raping his wife, and then decides to let him go?????? This is the same man that murdered 500 innocent people just so he could leave a city, and now he suddenly wants an honorable public death for for his arch enemy??? Cornwell has made Hawkeswill into the ultimate evil nemesis, and he is just too evil and too lucky to be believed. Having Hawkeswill again and again dance around Sharpe and his friend Sgt. Harper makes Sharpe's other exploits all that more unbelievable. How could anyone that is so easily fooled by the insane Hawkeswill accomplish all the heroics described in this and other books? Here is a guy that tracked one enemy through mountains, rivers, etc. for weeks, just for beating him up, but when he finds Hawkeswill raping his wife (for the second time), threating to kill his child, after Hawkeswill has already killed his good friend Cpt. Knowles, and had Sgt. Harper flogged and demoted, he lets Hawkeswill jump out the window without even a chase???? The Sharpe character wanders all over the place from a vile evil killing machine to a goof-balled mush-mellon.
Fortunately, we have not had to contend with Hawkeswill for a long time in the series, and hopefully we will not see him again.
One of the better Sharpe novels.......2006-04-01
"Sharpe's Company" is one of the better books in the Sharpe series with a mostly convincing plot, a geniunely interesting series of complications for our hero Richard Sharpe to deal with (including a demotion, the birth of a daughter and the return of the evil Sgt. Hakeswill) and some really terrific battle scenes.
If you've read any of the Sharpe in India "prequel" novels ("Sharpe's Tiger," "Sharpe's Triumph" and "Sharpe's Fortress"), this is an especially rewarding book because of the return of Sharpe's old nemesis Hakeswill.
While a great adventure yarn, the book isn't quite perfect. As some previous reviewers have noted, there are a few contrived lapses in the way the characters behave, particularly the failure of the normally aggressive Sharpe to quickly and cleanly end his Hakeswill problem. But, if you've read the Sharpe in India prequels, you're likely to just see this as an ongoing weakness of Sharpe, who tended to do things in India such as force Hakeswill into a snake pit and then walk off without ensuring that the snakes actually finished off Hakeswill. (If I wanted to get all literary, I could possibly account for this by spinning out some psychological theory about Hakeswill's role as a distorted father figure for the orphaned Sharpe, but, hey, this really isn't *that* kind of historical novel ...)
