Book Description
The US Dept. of Education, in conjunction with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently unveiled a $50 million effort to expand research on early childhood cognitive development. A key issue identified requiring more information and research was the education and professional development of educators. Along these lines, Doug Greer has prepared a book discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using state-of-the-art science instruction materials.
The book provides important information both to trainers of future teachers, current teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. To trainers there is information on how to motivate, mentor, and instruct in-service teachers to use the best scientifically based teaching strategies and tactics. To in-service teachers, there is information on how to provide individualized instruction in classrooms with multiple learning and behavior problems, school interventions to help prevent vandalism and truancy, and how curricula and instruction can be designed to teach functional repetoirs rather than inert ideas. To policy makers and supervisors, the book discusses how to determine the effectiveness of curricular innitiatives toward meeting mandated standards in national assessments.
Doug Greer was recently awarded the Fred S. Keller Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education by APA for the research and application of the material covered in this book. School programs incorporating the material used in this book have produced 4-7 times more learning outcomes for students than control and baseline educational programs (see www.cabas.com)
The book provides research-based and field-tested procedures for:
* Teaching students of all ability levels ranging from preschool to secondary school
* How to teach special education students in the context of a regular classroom
* Best practices for all teachers to teach more effectively
* Means of monitoring and motivating teachers' practices
* A comprehensive and system-wide science of teachingpost modern-postmodern!
* Tested procedures that result in four to seven times more learning for all
students
* Tested procedures for supervisors to use with teachers that result in
significant student learning
* Tested procedures for providing the highest accountability
* A systems approach for schooling problems that provide solutions rather
than blame
* Parent approved and parent requested educational practices
* Means for psychologists to work with teachers and students to solve
behavior and learning problems
* A comprehensive systems science of schooling
* An advanced and sophisticated science of pedagogy and curriculum design
* Students who are not being served with traditional education can meet or
exceed the performance of their more fortunate peers,
* Supervisors can mentor teachers and therapists to provide state of the
science instruction
* Parent education can create a professional setting for parents, educators,
and therapists to work together in the best interests of the student,
* Teachers and supervisors who measure as they teach produce significantly
better outcomes for students,
* Systemic solutions to instructional and behavioral problems involving
teachers, parents, supervisors provide means to pursue problems to their
solution,
* A science of teaching, as opposed to an art of teaching, can provide an
educational system that treats the students and the parents as the clients.

Designing Teching Strategies.......2007-03-18
SMART! Nicely written and very clear language. Public school systems could learn alot from this book!
Most important text since Cooper, Heron, & Heward.......2006-03-31
This text explains EXACTLY how to make the everyday practice of teaching with ABA work BEYOND the one-to-one home program for a single student. It is the most comprehensive extension of "what to do and how to do it" since Cooper, Heron, & Heward's "Applied Behavior Analysis."
What Dr. Greer dubs the "ABA Systems Approach" springs from the university informing comprehensive application of behavior analsyis to schooling settings (CABAS schools). However, the text can also stand indepenent of that special environment; and its contents are immediately applicable to individual practitioners in home and community settings.
Chapters summarize advances in practice and current research in verbal behavior; creating literacy and mathematics curricula for students who need ABA methodology to learn; and how to supervise other professionals in advancing their ABA and research skills.
Especially useful are tables that translate students' performance trouble into potential repertoires that may not be fully taught or reinforcement contingencies that may be lacking; and team actions that would remedy those problems.
Book Description
Taking professionals and students step by step through conceptualizing, planning, and implementing an effective early literacy program, this book focuses on preventing reading difficulties and promoting success in at-risk 3- to 5-year-olds. The authors draw on extensive research and many years of influential work in real classrooms. A comprehensive framework is delineated for helping young children construct meaning from different kinds of texts, develop key oral language skills, and learn concepts about print and the alphabet. Ideas for tailoring instruction to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners are accompanied by clear assessment guidelines. The book also offers practical, how-to-do-it suggestions for setting up literacy activities and arranging the classroom environment. Concluding chapters bring the authors' approach to life with vivid depictions of a preschool and a kindergarten classroom in action. Two invaluable appendices provide additional useful resources: reproducible sheets for conducting literacy assessments and a primer on phonics for teachers.

Very good........2007-06-26
I thought this book provided a lot of useful information for someone who is beginning work in this field. I do feel like a great deal of it is targeted more towards preschool than kindergarten, but definitely addresses the needs of "at-risk" students. The assessment suggestions were weak in my opinion, but a good starting point.
Book Description
The award-winning Play for All Guidelines has become the industry standard for all planners, designers, and managers of outdoor play settings. It is the most comprehensive design resource available for integrating children of all abilities in the same play area. It addresses the full range of play-related issues; safety and risk management, accessibility and integration, maintenance, and -- most importantly--child development. This revised edition reflects the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the current U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's guidelines for public play areas.

I return to this book over and over as a reference for the design of play environments.

Direct Instruction: How to do book........2000-05-11
This book lays the foundation of the underpinning principles of Direct Instruction. The authors clearly and explicitly step the read through the DI model. The book is sectioned off into sub types. These are defined and and practical strategies are given to use the DI model with curriculum areas.
This book is a must for all those wishing to use the most effective teaching model currently available to classroom teachers.
Customer Reviews:
Good for ideas but..........2006-11-05
It's a good book to get ideas from but not that great if what you're looking for is theory.
Take a look inside........2003-09-25
For people who don't know much about children this is a good place to start. The book is divided into sections by age groups and lists what we need to keep in mind when creating products for the targeted age. It also has examples of products that are already on the market, in areas ranging from toys to food. I was very pleased with it.

A Revolution in Play.......2007-04-10
"Designing Outdoor Environments for Children" is a thorough investigation of how spaces for children aid in the development of necessary motor skills, intellectual and imaginative stimulation, and an early exposure to nature that will foster lifelong appreciation. No topic is untouched - history, design process, sustainability, case studies, and fundraising are all included. Not only is the text written in a clear, concise manner with many insightful images, but the text also provides the seeds with which a revolution in children's play will occur, hopefully soon. Designers, parents, principals, and teachers should all read, and will undoubtedly benefit from the unique concepts presented here. The environments for our children can become more inspirational, more nurturing, and should be made over; the authors tell you why and show you how.
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-23
I have found 'Designing Outdoor Environments for Children' to be an excellent addition to my library. I will include this publication as a part of the 'Introduction to Horticultural Therapy' class I am teaching. It will be very useful in helping students understand the essential role outdoor environments can play in teaching children about nature. The book is also an excellent resource in my own work designing residences and school playgrounds. Children, more than ever, need to reconnect with nature. The need to strengthen our interaction with nature cannot be overstressed today!

Beautiful but not much help.......2001-04-23
Every room in this book was gorgeous. However, unless you are a mural painter (or know one who will give you a break) or have a very large budget, then only about one third of the information contained in it will be helpful to you. Some of the rooms even required built-in nooks in the walls for the beds. It was a little more elaborate then I had anticipated--some of the designs painted on the walls were amazing, and there is no way someone who is not artistic (like myself) could even begin to attempt them.I just wanted some ideas for my daughter's room, not something that would make me sick because it was so beautiful and I couldn't do it! It is a great book, just be warned that you need a fairly large budget, or the artistic talent of Michelangelo.
Great ideas for a range of ages!.......2001-01-30
My husband and I have 3 children ranging from age 11 to age 7. We had several ideas about what we wanted and this book helped us to refine our ideas. The kids were very excited because they could look at pictures and discuss what they liked and didn't like about the suggestions.
My asthma has calmed down........2000-05-25
I have serious asthma, and my mom bought this book when it cametime to re-decorate my room, because there is a section for childrenwith asthma and other disabilities (like blind-ness, and kids in wheelchairs). I used to wheeze every night, and I couldn't fall asleep easily at all. Now, my mom made my room look really cool, and I can breathe easy. (For those of you who have the book, it's kind of like the jungle picture.) Thank you, Megan Connelly, you've helped me so much!
A must for new moms and dads.......2000-05-13
The perfect baby shower gift that will keep on giving until after they are grown. A lovely written and illustrated book.
"Smart Approach" is Wonderful!.......2000-05-02
I just wanted some help to decorate my kid's room... what I got was a book that drew me in. This well-written book is colorful and educational, full of beauty and ideas. It is enjoyable, readable, and "do-able." I could not have chosen a better book to assit in this project.
