Indian Designs.......2007-05-09
The book is great and very helpful. I do segmented woodturning and was interested in designs that fit this style of work. As a descendant of the Choctaw tribe, I was very pleased to find Choctaw designs included.
I was not thrilled to see it called "Indian" as I am not now and never have been a descendant of anyone from India. Native American is more acceptable.
Book Description
This beautiful art book tells the story of the "other Southwest," tracing the history of centuries of conflict and resolution between Natives, Hispanics, and Anglos, as well as their respective artistic accomplishments. This far-reaching collection of artifacts invites you to explore the achievements and art of cultures that overcame unfathomable obstacles to build the Southwest that we know today.

OFF THE COFFEE TABLE AND INTO YOUR PSYCHE.......2007-08-07
Was the movie Chinatown fact or fiction? In The Desert Southwest: Four Thousand Years of Life and Art, Allan and Carol Hayes tell you the real story behind the water deal that turned Los Angeles into what it is today -- and about the century after century of history that preceded it.
In school, you were told that the valleys of the Nile, the Tigris and the Euphrates were the "cradles of
civilization," but did anyone ever tell you that the southern Arizona desert is considered the cradle of civilization in the United States?
Recent excavations indicate that people began living an agriculture-based lifestyle in the Tuscon basin four thousand years ago. Why and how did the dry, hard-edged, hostile desert become the place where millions of Americans want to live today .. a place where, for centuries, talented artists, engineers and craftsmen have created everything from sophisticated irrigation systems to magnificent pottery.
Don't be misled -- this book would look terrific on your coffee table with its stunning photographs by John
Blom. But what's best about it is not what it shows you but what it tells you. This is much more than a coffee table book -- the words and pictures leap off the page and into your psyche.
Read it and you will never feel the same about the desert southwest again.
A wonderful read.......2006-12-05
This is a treasure book for anyone living in Arizona or trying to know it better. What a great read: funny and studious. The authors present their opinions with joy and research and tell you why they ended up where they are.
A great keeper and a great gift.
History that reads like a Tony Hillerman novel, only funnier ...........2006-11-22
This is not a coffee-table book, although it would look good on any coffee table. It's a meticiously researched
history-anthropology-archeology book that reads like a Tony Hillerman novel, only funnier. And it's filled with wonderful photographs (both historical and contemporary),some of which show things like things you could actually buy.
Many people think the history of the Desert Southwest began with the Pueblos and ended with Indian Gaming,
but this book traces its history, art and culture back for more than 4000 years. And it takes the reader far beyond New Mexico and Arizona to amazing sites in Utah, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Southern California and Northern Mexico.
My husband and I lived in the Southwest for many years and thought we knew a lot about the area -- but this
book opened our eyes. We lent it to Hispanic and Native neighbors, who said the same thing. I reccommend it to anyone as a fresh, readable exploration of a fascinating subject. And as a terrific take-along travel guide
to anyone planning a trip to the Desert Southwest.
By the way, if you're already into Pueblo Pottery, check out the first Hayes-Blom book, Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni.
A Gem of a Book.......2006-11-21

OK for reference.......2007-07-03
This book is designs only, in black and white, very little text reference. It could be a good book as a supplemental design for southwest decor artist, but not recommended as a starter. The designs are clearly drawn and good size. Not recommended as a "must have" for southwest native american designs.
Southwestern Indian Designs.......2007-02-17
This book ws interesting, and it did have quite a bit of information on the subject. Somehow I think that it could have given more information on the designs.
Book Description
Complete and detailed instructions and illustrations for creating your own Southwest Indian quilts. Has quick sewing tips, choosing fabrics and even how to construct a quilting frame.
Customer Reviews:
A Huge Disappointment.......2004-09-01
If you are a quilter looking for applique patterns, please, do not waste your money on this book. The "patterns" are nothing more than clip art type pictures that the author admits she got from coloring books. The user is expected to copy and enlarge an 8" picture until it is usable for a 40" piece and then seperate the picture into usable parts. Some pictures are too detailed for applique and she tells you they must be simplified. A large portion of the book is general quilting information that only a beginner would find useful.
Book Description
Sixteen handsome designs, adapted from rare artifacts, provide an excellent introduction to Native American art and culture. Motifs depict geometrical and abstract patterns, images of animals, human figures and more. Color with a variety of media and place near a bright light to produce glowing effects.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring!.......2000-12-29
As a stained glass artist, I'm always looking for new ideas. The Tiffany style, curvy Art-Nouveau is beautiful, of course, but it's just been _done_ to death. Here, the reader is shown the beauty of simple geometric forms and given a whole new world of stained glass design to explore and play with. These designs are reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's or Mr. MacIntosh. I had never consciously drawn a relationship between these two revolutionary artists and the native art of America before seeing this book. This is a great idea book for an artist looking for new designs and new ways to play with shape and color.

Nice simple one to start southwest designs.......2007-07-03
Nice basic reference book of documented southwest native american designs, primarialy focused on pottery designs. Some blanket and doll designs included as well. All renderings are black/white with reference to documentation. Great for art design projects for basic southwest decor. Designs are referenced to tribe and area and a little history included. Not a very indepth book, but a good basic starter for the southwest artist.
Book Description

This massive work describes the evolution of southwestern textiles from the early historic period to the late nineteenth century, establishes a revised chronology for its development, and traces significant changes in materials, techniques, and designs. Dozens of line drawings demonstrate the fine points of technique concerning weaves, edge finishes, and corner tassels. This is an essential resource for anyone who appreciates the intricacy of these outstanding creations.
Customer Reviews:
A singular effort that sets the standard.......2005-02-10
Every now and again a book is destined to become a classic. This is such a book. To describe this reference book as monumental is not using too strong a word. This is indeed a singular effort to provide scholars, collectors and interested readers with a must-have resource to understanding the origins and intricacies of some sought-after works of art.
For centuries collectors have coveted the hand-woven blankets, sarapes and ponchos of the Pueblo, Navajo, and Spanish American artists of the Southwest.
Indeed, the popularity of these objects is increasing, as evidenced by the long line of cars and attendant crowds gathering in the high school auditorium in Crownpoint,N.M., on the third Friday of every month.
Collectors, buyers and speculators meet at the school to examine hundreds of handmade rugs created by native artists. These would-be buyers vie for the sought-after items in a high-speed auction. These monthly sales are testimony to the never-ending popularity of Southwestern textiles.
As for this book, where to begin?
The author became the first curator of anthropology at the University of Colorado Museum in 1953. He remained at that post until his retirement in 1986, and later became interested in the history of Southwestern textile development.
His exhaustive research led him to visit dozens of museums and painstakingly study thousands of 19th century textiles. He supervised chemical tests of dyes from hundreds of yarns and spent years conducting research in both renowned and obscure archives in an effort to document the material and basis for textile development.
His work resulted in a classification scheme for Southwestern textiles that established a baseline for understanding, identifying and dating items of unknown origin. This book is the result of that research and will be the standard by which all future efforts will be judged.
The book contains 115 black and white figures, line drawings that demonstrate weaving techniques, edge finishes and corner tassels as well as 191 gorgeous color plates that enable the reader to visually determine the distinct traits of the three textile traditions of the Pueblo, Navajo, and Spanish-American blanket weaving art.
There are chapters dealing with fibers, yarns, dyes, fabric structure, tools, weaves and finishing techniques as well as 97 pages of appendix, chapter notes and an index.
This is a monunmental work that will appeal to scholars, collectors and general readers with an interest in the history of this Southwestern art form.
