Customer Reviews:
important scholarly contribution.......2007-10-09
The book offers a nice introduction to the artist's life and times. Also provides excellent insights regarding the workshop and distinguishing between Rembrandt's art and that of his pupils. The scholarship is indepth and apt, most of the writers being part of the Rembrandt Project. There are 83 separate plates (most in color) with wonderful essays and explanations.
If you can't see Rembrandt in person, this is the book.......2006-10-10
This box set is the most prized possession on my bookshelf. I could not possibly do the pictures and information in this book justice with words. Some of the most amazing detail photographs of Rembrandt's surfaces that I have ever seen.

Book Description
We?re entering a new era. Mini-DV filmmaking is the new folk, the new punk rock, the new medium where anyone can tell his story. "$30 Film School" is an alternative to spending four years and a hundred thousand dollars to learn the trade. It is influenced by punk rock?s Do-It-Yourself spirit of just learning the basics and then jumping up on a stage and making a point, and by the American work ethic back when it was pure, before it became all about corporations crushing the little guy. Throw in the hacker idea that information wants to be free (or at least very cheap) and you?ve got our deal. Inside you?ll find many interviews from insightful independent filmmakers and artists, as well as a host of practical advice, knowledge, and resources.
Customer Reviews:
more than just a film book.......2007-02-24
I got this for my boyfriend, he's starting out in filmmaking. He's upset because I keep borrowing it from him to read, even though I'm not a filmmaker. This is an amazing book, with lots of advice on dealing with people and living life....FAR more than just a book on making video. there's even stuff on computer use that helped me with writing...but mainly, it's a GUIDE FOR LIVING, somehow hidden inside a flimmaking book.
Read it. Buy it. Share it. And if you're not a filmmaker, I'd recommend starting with the last chapter. "Closing Arguments."

Exspected much more! .......2007-02-20
I bough this book and though that it will be much exiting then it was. It was nothing special for me. This book is written by not professional film maker he is not seemed to be very successful. He didn't even finished the film school and makes ugly films. I didn't like them at all. This man has no talent. How can you learn from such a person?
Buy This Book!!!.......2006-11-16
$30 Film School is an absolute jewel of a book to have in your possession , as is covers every aspect of filmmaking from conception to distribution in a writing style that that is as straight forward and plebian as it is witty and concise. Michael Dean takes an approach to instructional writing that makes it seem like you are in the same room with him having a conversation. I read it straight through the first day I bought it out of sheer enjoyment and I have been referring to it on various projects ever since. Every question I have had about filmmaking has been answered and utilized in this book. I have used Dean's sage advice to attain fiscal sponsorship, to totally master my camera, to find cheap and professional ways around lighting and sound.
As I have read all of the reviews posted here, let me just state, if anyone has an issue spending 30$ on this book, they are not reading it the way it was intended. There are no quick fixes in like and you could read a whole library of books and never achieve what you want to. You have to get off your behind and do it. That is what Michael Dean is saying. If your intent is to become Michael Bey, I guess you should save your money. This is not a how to guide to becoming a Hollywood Mogul. If your intent is to figure out a feasible way to do what you love, to make art, this book will show you the way. I own at least twenty different books on the subject. THIS ONE IS THE BEST!
Wow..........2006-11-06
I bought this book...for...30 dollars and now i want it back! Dean really isnt that great of a writer...
Not to mention the simple fact that if Hollywood never excisted we wouldnt like films...I dont understand why everything has to be so Hollywood Bashing these days. Dean is a prime example of one of these types, if he wasnt lauding himself for his "DIY" tactics he was talking about about how "Punk Rock" he is or even "Those Hollywood rats...". i honestly think that Hollywood rejected him...so now he vents his anger through the book.
Sad.
i'll never get those minutes back..........2006-10-15
and not to waste too many more minutes on it, suffice to say this book left me unimpressed; poorly written and poorly executed. there was nothing of value in this book to me. do not waste your money.

Customer Reviews:
This was good 7 years ago.......2007-02-26
Graphic Design School has some useful tools for beginners, but more than half of the book is outdated. Graphic Design School has a few sections on design theory, and more than half the book are tutorials in photoshop, illustrator, etc.
The book boasts a bit how today you cannot talk about or teach graphic desing without addressing technology, This is where the book faulters. Technology tchanges so quickly now that this book's many tutorials end up being very obsolete (pre adobe CS). It would have been nice if this came with a CD that could get updates for tutorials, etc. A book like this needs to make a new edition atleast every 2 years to keep up.
New Graphic Design School.......2005-10-12
Loaded with illustrations, graphics and layouts, this intoduction to graphic design covers basics that will "charge" your creative batteries.
A must!? I don't think so........2001-01-06
Yes the book is visual. Yes it has examples of other student's work. Yes there is helpful information in it.
HOWEVER, having worked in the field for more than 10 years, I find this book simplistic, and frankly the samples of work included are not very good.
Why would I want to emulate design I don't like?
I found the examples to be dated, and I found the book lacking in teaching skills that designers really need to know.
If this is a fair representation of what is being taught in design school, we are in a very sad place.
There are so many other GOOD books out there. Buy one of those.
A Must for Web Designers.......2001-01-06
I have met many web designers who have never learned the basic skills of graphic design. "Graphic design School" is the best book out there today on learning the techniques and tools for basic graphic design practices. Swann covers the 'Language of Design,' 'Principles and Techniques' and 'Commercial Practice.' Short, concise and beautifully illustrated to relay the importance of knowing this craft for a solid design foundation.
Web colors are not mentioned, nor do you see anything about browser selection nor any debate over screen size. What you do see are the brief introductions to corporate design, logos, editorial design and packaging. All basics to build on for a graphic design career, including web design.
Graphic Design School.......2000-06-12
This book teaches the basic principles of graphic design as they are currently taught and learned. Graphic Design School is a must for any new designer or design student who is a visual learner, which of course most designers are. There are many examples of student's work. The next best thing to being in the classroom, because you can compare your progress with other students, and thus determine your viability in what can be a very competitive field.
Also and excellent teaching tool for more advanced designers, a back-to-basic guide for solving graphic problems and blocks.
Text includes many color photos and illustrations. Easy to follow along and genuinely interesting.

Customer Reviews:
only semi-informative.......2007-05-14
I was skeptical about by this book based on the cover, but as a graphic designer who is a little shaky on their pre-press skills I thought it would be helpful. Come to find out I should have gone with my gut. I did find a few paragraphs to be informative and helpful, but would not recommend this book to someone- especially not at it's suggested price. The book itself had alot of random information that did not seem to flow together and unless you knew some about pre-press you would have a hard time following and as someone with some pre-press knowledge you would not get your money's worth.

Book Description
This is a schizophrenic book. Between its covers are: a book about typography and graphic design, arranged around recent work from a single source and incubator, the Werkplaats Typografie (Typography Workshop/WT) in Arnheim, the Netherlands; a book about a specific approach and pedagogy, the methods that the WT uses to study and practice graphic design, in which students integrate all aspects of the discipline and its forms in their own expressive vocabulary; a book that presents a broad selection of work from a "school-in-progress," the WT, along with texts that articulate their common foundations and ideas. Actually, perhaps it suffers not so much from schizophrenia as from multiple-personality disorder. In any case, the WT was founded five years ago as a postgraduate course in graphic design; it functions both as a training site and a studio where professional commissions are executed for a varied clientele. Published in conjunction with Werkplaats Typografie.

Moving a Game from Your Head to a Computer Screen.......2006-08-16
Computer games have changed dramatically over the past few years. Long gone are simple Pac-Man type games. Today's computer are vastly more powerful than the early PC's and competition has forced the gaming industry into every more sophisticated games. In addition to the powerful computers, extremely sophisticated software has come about to assist game development.
As Mr, Schuytema says, however, the most powerful, the most important piece of software is your mind. The most powerful computers, the most sophisticated software don't have the crativity you have.
All of the rest of this book then is on simply using the tools that are available to take your creativity and make it dance on the screen. It begins with the development of a plan. What is it that the game is supposed to do, what's the setting, the characters, what objects do these characters use: gun, bomb, chocolate bar?
Then it goes into the tools that he recommends the starting designer to use, specifically the scripting language Lua. This is a simple to use, easy way to get started. You can certainly use it through the prototyping stage, at which time you may or may not need to go to something lower level like C++ or C.
He develops a simple game through the book so that he can use Lua to illustrate what he is doing. A CD is included with the book that includes the game and a bunch of Lua software.
