This book is written in unnecessarily complicated language and does not present information in a way that is easily understood. I teach graduate courses in quantitative methods and I made the mistake of ordering this book for one of my courses without reading it first. It was a disaster!
Unless you are getting a doctorate and need to know lots of complicated formulas without adequate explanations, DO NOT buy this book.

I have used this textbook for an upper level math class and although the book was hard to follow, I really feel that it did present the information in a well laid out format. Some of the words were hard to grasp, but as for the problems in the back, I found them very useful. I hope anyone out there will in fact give this book a chance.
ABSOLUTELY THE WORST TEXTBOOK FROM A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE.......2003-03-12
I am currently taking a Quant Meth class which is using this as the textbook. By far, this is the worst textbook I have ever encountered as a student. It is hard to understand and the answers that are given in the back do not explain how to get to the final solution. Because the problems are not paired (that is 1 is not like 2, 3 is not like 4, etc.) and the only answers are to the EVEN problems, you are basically lost. There is a website for the 9th edition that is "under construction" currently, so there is no help there. This is not a book conducive to learning. Teachers and colleges - PLEASE think twice before you choose this for your curriculum. Both you and your students will be miserable!
Quantitative Methods 8th Edition.......2002-02-01
I am a professor using this book to teach a graduate level Quantitative Methods math class. This book is hard to understand for the students. Exercises included at the end of the chapters are hard to figure for the student based on what is presented in the text alone.
For the instructor, no teacher support is available except a solutions manual. All other texts I have used provides sample lecture material, additional cases, etc. This text provides no such support with a useless web site.

This is the best service manual I have ever seen. It makes Chilton or Audel manuals look like kids books.
This book has it all. It covers the TT from lug nuts to adjusting your front and (on Quattro equipped cars) rear caster and camber. It tells you the model differences, and how to service each type, not simply the most popular, like many other manuals.
The thing is about 2.5" thick, and weighs about 8 or 10 pounds (my best guess) I enjoy just reading it, but it can be a bit unweildly unless you have a table or surface to rest it on, its that big!
The book covers 1.8 180 HP, 1.8 225 HP and the newer 3.2 250 HP models, bouth coupe and roadster. It covers the sound systems, both stock and Bose systems with the CD changer. It covers Haldex unit service, it shows most special factory tools (hint- many can be fabricated from the pictures)
I know I'm gushing over this manual, and honest- I do NOT work for Bentry publishing!, the book is simply awesome, a term I usually reserve for much more exciting things than service manuals. The book is much more than I expected, it really delivers the goods.
If you own a TT, GET THIS BOOK! Even if you don't do your own work, you will be a much better informed consumer when you roll your baby into the evil Audi dealer's spiderweb -ahhh, I mean service department...
Note, the Bently web site sells this for $89.95 plus $12.- shipping, so the Amazon price with FREE SHIPPING, is a fantastic buy.
Note: You can also get this book on CD/DVD, some people will prefer that, and I usually am among those who prefer it on dosk, but wit a shop manual, I like to have the book to lay on my workbench while I work.

My self like it better then the electronically manual. And more important you can use it everywhere. The CD ROM version can only be used on one PC

Just about everything you need to know..........2007-08-27
I recently purchased a used 03 Passat and love it. I drove my younger cousins in the car and they managed to make the backseat ashtray, that is supposed to fold nicely into the center console, unable to catch and stay closed. We had originally ordered this manual to help offset the cost of having the oil changed by a mechanic, but we were able to read and know exactly how to fix the ashtray and save an $80 visit to the dealer.

This very large book is sort of redundant now that you can buy 'The Complete New Yorker' (ISBN 1400064740) on eight DVDs and see every cover and page from 4,109 issues. I'll most likely buy the DVDs too, if only to be able to see the covers large and also to have a look at all the ads from the first February 21, 1925 copy onwards.
Still, being able to see the covers on screen is not really the same as opening this lovely book and flipping through the pages. Each year starts on a spread with a selected cover big on the left, the right has a couple of covers above a list of issue dates and the relevant artist, the next two spreads from each year display twenty-four covers 3.25 by 2.5 inches wide and I think this is a reasonable size to appreciate the artwork and follow your favorites.
The New Yorker is probably the only consumer magazine not to have changed its cover design since the start, even the National Geographic eventually junked their yellow border for a more contemporary look. Because the NY doesn't have cover lines the format still works, even down to using the logo typeface designed in the Twenties by the first Art Editor Rea Irvin.
This book is just delightful and you can slowly look through the pages and enjoy the amazing range of artists and styles, the whimsy of Mary Petty or the hard line graphics of Gretchen Dow Simpson. Whoever did the cover the quality is always maintained.

I have Bentley manuals on all of the VW's I've owned they give me the info that I need. Of course if I need a how to manual I'll turn to the Haynes Manual.
I like the Haynes format better.......2007-05-16
This bentley book is basically an exploded parts diagram, with alot of footnotes referenced to each separate part. This book is fine for factory techs, who've been schooled in detail on the car, but for the home user, it leaves alot to be desired. I like the Haynes format better, in that they walk you through a procedure, instead of just giving you an exploded parts diagram. Also, some things are just missing from the Bentley, and you still have to scratch your head for an hour, and search their huge book, before you realize you have to just figure it out for yourself. I think the book could be alot better, especially due to its high price and large size. One positive, is they list the fault codes in back, but you can find even better lists of the DTCs online, so you don't need the book to read the codes. Please, Haynes, write a manual for this car! I'll buy it!

The manual has detailed descriptions on how to take elements apart, but when it comes to codes it let you hang. I have a series of error messages which are also spelled out in the book, but it does not point you to the faulty part.
It would be a good idea to have an additional section which points you in the right direction based on the error codes.
Overall I would recommend the book since there is nothing better out there.

Bentley is the best manual for working on vw beetles from the early air cooled ones to the new water cooled models! No other manual is as complete!

Weird, beautiful, absorbing, difficult, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a surrealist text loosely based on the life, suffering and reincarnation of Anne Frank, with guest appearances from a pair of Siamese twins menaced by the cold and carnivores, a two-headed boy bobbing in a jar, anthropomorphic vegetables and a variety of immature erotic horrors.
Mangum sings his dreamlike narratives with a dreamer's intensity, his creaky, off key voice occasionally breaking as he struggles to complete each dense couplet. The music is like nothing else in the 90s indie underground: a psychedelic brass band, its members self-taught, forging polychromatic washes of mood and tribute. The songs stick to one narrow key, the images repeat and circle back, and to listen is to be absorbed into a singular, heart-rending vision.

A great essay, detailing who was there at the creation of indy-music's greatest album, and who was left after it all disappeared. Makes you feel like you were there, too. If I were giving the In the Aeroplane cd as a gift (and I often do), I would definitely include this great little book as well. Viva Jeff Mangum!! Come back to us.

I bought this book for answers to questions I have about the lyrics to this album, not for answers to questions I have about the 90's or about living in a commune.

Hey, check this out: a smart, competent writer with a passion for a wonderful album actually got enough inside access to write something meaningful about it! I think this is the way the 33 1/3 series should work - the book complements the album, and made me go back and listen to it with fresh ears. Strongly recommended for fans of E6 or Aeroplane.

This is a amazing little book about one of my most personal and favorite albums. NMH were such an emotive, passionate band and I am so pleased that Kim Cooper equals that same level of feeling.
What's even better is that Cooper doesn't just deal with the making of the album, but rather gives a mini-history of the band and somehow in only 104 pages she pulls this off and goes into detail about the making of the album, the following tours and eventual decline into obscurity.
Truly wonderful!

I should have known better when I read a review that started with "this book is a work of art..." Are reviews like this written by someone close to the authors?? Needless to say, I purchased both the desktop edition and the enterprise edition and have found myself turning to other Access references instead (or searching Google Groups for info).
In short, these books deal with complex concepts that the intermediate developer probably will never need to know. My work with Access has involved developing simple apps with some VBA work - which is the reason why we use Access in the first place, right? If you NEED to stretch Access to its absolute limits, consider purchasing these books. If you have normal needs from Access, look elsewhere.
Probably good if read like a novel.......2005-03-24
This book is a paradox. It's huge and filled with lots of information. It weighs a lot and has lots of pages.
WHY then, do I refer to it time and time again and never find anything I am looking for?
After attempting to use this book as a reference guide for the past few years, I have given up. It simply does not have the information I am looking for. I am tired of being in a bind while developing an Access tool, grabbing this and looking for a topic, only NOT to find it.
This book DOES have information, though. Lots of it. Used as a reference guide, it trepidates close to offering solutions to common problems. Scan through it and it will *touch* upon topics I need to know about, then veer off into some unknown space that is not what I need. Then I end up going to google groups where I find what I need quickly.
And that reminds me. The index leaves a lot to be desired. The words are large and, for long topics, it is easy to get lost because it is difficult to see which sections are indented (some sections are so long there are no indentations).
Just the other day I was trying to learn more about Access's .Text versus .Value property for textboxes. Surely, in a book of this size, there MUST be a paragraph devoted to it, right?
If so, I'd like to know where it is. Google groups...found it.
So as a reference guide, this book sucks.
HOWEVER, if this book was read from cover-to-cover and the material memorized, THAT would probably yield some good learnings. But I don't use computer reference books that way at all. This book would be way too big and dry for that.
Bottom line, I spent 59 bucks on this thing and it takes up a lot of room on my bookshelf. It would probably be a good book if read cover-to-cover. I can't think of 1 topic this book has helped me through during the development of Access tools.

This book is simply fabulous. In fact both Volumes 1 and 2 are brilliant. If you need accurate, detailed, and to-the-point information about Microsoft Access then this is the only way to go.
The Developer's Handbook has everything anyone could ever need to know about Access. Granted, it is not for Access beginners, but if you have a handle on tables, forms, queries, and reports, and you aren't afraid to get into a little bit of VBA, (i.e. if you're not in the market for "Access for Dummies" or "Access in 24 Hours") then skip the books for intermediate users, such as the completely inadequate Access Bible, and get the Developer's Handbook.
Part of my job is developing Access databases for small businesses and I use this book on a daily basis. I have yet to find a single feature in Access that this book does not cover. And if you're trying to do something with Access that it doesn't readily perform, chances are this book will tell you exactly how to do it, or it will provide a work-around for the problem you are facing.
Do yourself a favour: don't waste your time buying other Access books. Get the Developer's Handbook and you'll save hours of frustration.

the coerced programmer's bible.......2001-12-11
If you have the (mis)fortune to fall into the world of Access development as I did, you cannot go wrong with this book. I've been working with Access since version 2.0, and using the ADH since their 97 version. It's not really for an Access beginner, of course, but it can teach you everything you need to know to go from being an intermediate user to being a power developer, in really CLEAR language, and with tons of really reusable answers. I've looked at other Access books, used a few in my time, and they just read like books about Access. This gives you answers.

Whether you're upgrading to Office 2000 or using the application suite for the first time, odds are that you'll need some help getting up to speed. Microsoft Press covers all of the bases with Microsoft Office 2000 8-in-1 Step by Step.
In trying to keep the needs of every user in mind, this book might intimidate the novice and yet go too slowly for the power user. In comprehensively touring the eight main programs in the Office package, it may be best suited to intermediate users.
Anywhere from two to five lessons on each application explain usage, including tutorials that show you how to design business cards or schedule meetings. As part of a training program, this would make for a pretty good reference book since each lesson ends with a table of quick explanations for performing the tasks you've just learned.
Microsoft Office 2000 8-in-1 Step by Step comes with a CD-ROM containing examples and multimedia walkthroughs for many of the lessons valuable to "hands-on" learners. Between the lessons, the diagrams, and the information in the book, you should be able to master Office with some patience and diligence. Of course, this is a Microsoft book, so if you're looking for bug reports or unofficial tips and tricks, you'll have to try elsewhere. But if a no-questions-asked tutorial and reference is good enough for you, there's nothing better. --Rob Lightner

Step By Step.......2001-12-11
I ordered the book and it came propmptly. More promptly than getting Office 2000 loaded on my machine. It looks a bit more simplistic than what I was looking for but it looks like a great book for someone just getting started.
Great initial investment pursuant to MOUS certification.......2000-12-12
My goal for 2001 is to obtain the MOUS certificate at the Master level. I have used MS products with the concentration of my experience centering on Word and Excel. I have used Access sporadically and with intermediate level performance. My experience with PowerPoint leaves much to be desired since I mainly use the wizards. My funds are limited so I wanted an all-inclusive reference (with CD Rom for practice) which would provide a basis for my study. I bought the book from another source (please forgive me oh mighty Amazon) and in terms of area concentration I would say it is intense concentration on beginning information, greater than average concentration on intermediate knowledge and average concentration on advanced applications. This is not a problem - I plan to buy books which center completely on each package as I master the foundation of each package. I would disagree with anyone who states that this is not for the advanced user, with constant upgrades and education there is no way anyone can ever retain each ounce of minutiae that can be acquired; this book is an excellent refresher. For the beginning or intermediate it is an excellent basis for further study.
A Good Introduction to Microsoft Office 2000.......2000-04-04
This book does a great job of explaining the basic concepts of all of the Microsoft Office programs. It also has good practice excerises. It does not, however, touch on any of the advanced or complicated features.

Far from insightful, this installment of 33 1/3 is an embarrassingly sparse concoction of definitions and song by song "analysis," little of which gives the reader any new insight into 69 Love Songs.
The first and lengthiest half of this edition is a lexicon. This would be fine if it were original. The content, however, is not unlike that which can be found on various websites devoted to the band and without having to deal with Beghtol's pseudo-intellectual blathering. Remember Mr. Beghtol, merely posing and spouting off like an intellectual does not an intellectual make.
The second half of the book is a song by song reflection from those involved and not so involved with 69 Love Songs. There are some insightful comments found here, however, it lacks any depth as to the process involved in the creation of the album. I would have been much more interested in reading about Stephen Merritt's thought and recording process rather than how the album got someone through a really rough patch in their life. Am I the only one who doesn't care how an album affects others?
The last section, considerably shorter than the other two, is an interview with Mr. Merritt. Unlike Daniel Handler's expansive interview for the box set, don't look for any insight here. Silly questions with silly answers. "Spit or swallow?" Brilliant and hilarious. Well, maybe ten years ago.
Unlike most of the 33 1/3 series Beghtol's 69 Love Songs installment could have been condensed down into a short pamphlet. That is if you were to take out all the pointless filler and vainglory.
For the benefit of all involved, I pray that this will be L.D. Beghtol's final attempt to squeeze whatever juice the 69 Love Songs franchise may still possess. His boorish sensibility and pretentious meanderings are stale. Unlike Stein, Thomson, Cocteau, or his hero O'Conner, Beghtol's attempt at acerbic wit is dull and far from the mark.
All in all Beghtol has perfected the art of average with a book that should, no doubt, be considered an embarrassment for the good folks at Continuum.
Not the best in the series.......2007-02-24
A little too fragmented and idiosyncratic for the casual listener/reader. The glossary of terms used in 69 Love Songs is fun and informative, but beyond that, its hard to penetrate.
Best 33 1/3 ever!.......2007-01-05
Thanks to LD Beghtol, we now have a book to accompany the already expansive boxed set of 69 Love Songs. Split into thirds, the first part being a hilarious lexicon featuring words found throughout 69 Love Songs (with extensive footnotes to boot!). The second part goes song by song with notes (tempo, key, style, things to listen for!), quotes and memories from preformances and recording from the members and noteable friends. The third part includes preformance notes and a sassy interview between the author, Stephin Merritt and a friend. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of humor, a pulse and good taste in music. A must have for fans of the Magnetic Fields, Stephin Merritt, LD Beghtol and fun.
great book, great subject.......2006-12-09
If you're a fan of the Magnetic Fields (and you probably are, since you're reading this), then you should waste no time in picking this book up. Every page sings with the same brilliance as the box set of the same name, making it a worthy addition to Continuum's excellent 33 1/3 series.
