An unprecedented package that gives readers the content of three important references by one of today's most influential design writers. This is a master class in the principles and practical fundamentals of design that will appeal to a broad audience of graphic artists and designers.
Customer Reviews:
Not attractive, but a useful reference for 2-D design.......2003-01-03
This is a combination of two books by the author, covering the essential principles of form and design in a textbook style. It won't inspire the artist, but does provide technical information that can be useful, especially for computer graphics artists.
The 3-D content of the book is less complete than the 2-D, and the pictures are primarily black and white. Visually and text-wise, this book is boring, but it may provide valuable technical information for those that are delving into the principles of design on computer. It's helpful for visalizing typical design usages like similarity, anomoly, gradation, radiation and rotation--with black and white shaded illustrations showing progression of design.
Written long long ago... yet still up to date!.......2002-01-22
This book is actually a compilation of two old books from the same writer. As he stated in the intro - it covers essential principles of form and design in very basic, formal, scientific way. This may be a bit dry for some, and the illustrations are very different from popular design books. It's nothing arty but it does mention crucial points for designing.
The content is not about mind-blowing inspiration, ongoing fashion/trend of design, or stupid sensational gimmick... it's just simple and pure - it describes principles of form!
These principles can be applied anywhere, anytime... any purpose... no limitation.
I read these books long ago and still I go back and see it again. I am a 3D/CGI animator now and I believe this book will be useful for either DTP and CGI users alike.
This book uses same terminology as in computer graphic:
What is Grid? Unit? Superunits? Grouping?
Vertex, Faces, Polygons, Normals...
Transforming - scale, position, rotation...
They were old books in one now(bundled), but there's nothing seems outdated here!
swanky.......1998-11-25
Wucius wong's Principles of form and design is just the essential book for all designer.
Excellent digest of visual design concerns with examples........1998-04-30
This book compiles Wucius Wong's earlier works "Principles of Two-Dimensional Design", "Principles of Two-Dimensional Form", and "Principles of Three-Dimensional Design". It's a good reference for design conventions (similarity, anomoly, gradation, radiation) with examples. Three-d section uses geometric constructions and doesn't use plastic examples. Strong 2-d resource. Less useful for 3-d.
Book Description
*Covers rehabilitation and preservation of buildings and entire neighborhoods *Analyzes the key elements of the urban environment *600 beautiful full-color photos enrich the text

A Deserved Classic But Incomplete.......2006-11-20
You'd expect a book with the title "Graphic Design Manual" to be comprehensive, covering all the fundamentals of graphic design. This book falls far, far short of being a complete guide to graphic design. To give you an idea of how short, the book has a dozen pages of text. That's it. I know graphic designers are fond of pictures but 12 pages of text out of 172 for a manual? (I'm reviewing my copy which is the 1965 edition.)
That said, this *is* a good book on design. The little text that there is is informative and the graphics nicely illustrate and extend the text. Much of content of the book has to be generated by the reader himself, as he reads the brief introductory text and then studies the examples.
Hofmann's approach is logical and hierarchical. He starts off with the basics and illustrates each with a simple series of graphics. Then over the course of a few pages the examples get progressively more complex but still depend upon and illustrate the point/s being discussed.
I highly recommend this book to someone who wants to learn or refresh their grasp of the fundamentals of design. Hofmann is a master and the graphics he has chosen for this book are compelling and informative. This book is probably beyond the novice level as it is so compressed, with very little discussion of each point but a lot of examples. A beginner will be hard pressed to follow the development of examples without some more guidance as to what he is looking at and how the more complex graphics relate to the original point. But still, you will learn a lot from this book, especially if you return to it later in your design education.
In short, despite its title this book does not cover graphic design, it covers the elements of design, things such as the dot, the line, text and illustration and the interplay between these elements. You will not find any discussion of important principles such as hierarchy, alignment, grids, layout, color (in fact all graphics are black and white). This is however a valuable book that deserves careful study and will teach you a lot about the fundamentals of design.
Bible of graphic design???.......2003-10-18
Even though Armin Hofmann has made a grand contrubution to the design world, I surely don't consider this book as a beginners manual. The one book that I can only consider to open the beginners horizon is "A History of Graphic Design" by Philip B. Meggs. In the long run, this is a good book, but not for the freshman.
GRAPHIC DESIGN BIBLE.......2002-02-23
THIS BOOK IS THE BIBLE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN...FOR ALL OF YOU GRAPHIC DESIGNERS, YOU NEED TO KEEP THIS BOOK AS A GUIDE. THIS BOOK CONTAINS THE FOUNDING PRICIPLES OF DESIGN. IF YOU ARE A NEW OR HAS BEEN DOING DESIGN FOR A AS FOR YEARS, THIS OLD BOOK IS THE TESTEMENT OF WHAT GRAPHIC DESIGN IS ALL ABOUT!

The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design
ASIN: 0750644362 |
Book Description
CAD Principles for Architectural Design is aimed at design students and practitioners interested in understanding how CAD is used in architectural practice. This book makes connections between the basic operations that are common to most CAD systems, and their use in practice on actual architectural design projects.
The ways in which CAD is integrated into the design processes of several leading edge practices is illustrated. Arising from these case studies is the emergence of a contemporary phenomenon of integrated CAD, in which all aspects of design schemes are brought together within computational frameworks that support the analysis of design proposals.
Szalapaj's view of CAD is one in which computers constitute a medium in which designers can express design ideas, rather than viewing computers as problem solving machines. For creative designers to successfully exploit CAD technology, CAD systems should reflect designers' intuitions as described by designers themselves
*Learn how to express your design ideas in CAD
*Understand the principles of CAD that are essential to all architects
*Turns theory into practice with an international range of contemporary architectural projects
Customer Reviews:
Thanks a million.......2007-10-02
The book has minor water damage(not a big deal) and arrived really fast. Thanks for getting it to me before my classes got crazy.
I give it an A..........2006-12-30
I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future class. But overall, I give it an A...
Everything you know about design principles but forgot.......2000-01-02
Pros: A definite must-have book and recommended reading for designers, artists and teachers. Excellent for art teachers seeking project ideas for students in traditional art/design media, also provides a design refresher for teachers with students in digital media, as the principles apply to web, cd-rom and new media design (but not animation. However, there is a section on objects in 3D space).
This book covers key design principles and art techniques that you may have forgotten after art school.
Cons: A lot easier to read for precticing artists and designers; may be brain freeze to art students goggling at the compact knowledge. Not recommended reading unless student is mature enough/is in the higher years/is truly interested.
Initial impression based on format, book thickness and the language used may appear too stiff and seem like very heavy reading at first, specially to first time art educators. Read the book in topics you need in order to digest info better.
After a while the format becomes familiar, the information astoundingly clear/well researched and you realize the book was brilliantly organized. Eureka!
As with all art/design reference book collections, this makes a good backbone book that could be supplemented by others, as it cannot cover everything. Ex: For selecting/using type and organizing layouts try "The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams, Peachpit Press. There's a web book version as well.
Final comment: Basic Visual Concepts and Principles, a thumbs up, definitely must have reference.

Clear, sensitive, and insightful.......2002-10-10
With the many approaches now available to artists working three-dimensionally there is, more than ever, a critical need for intelligent and carefully organized texts that can provide theoretical structure for students setting out on their journey to shape their ideas and environment. Stephen Luecking's recently published "Principles of Three-Dimensional Design: Objects, Space and Meaning" does just that by providing the kind of thorough, thoughtful, clearly written, generously illustrated and well organized text that will be of benefit to students now and for many years to come.
My students loved this book........2002-08-20
My students loved this book! They found that complicated ideas were presented to them in a fully understandabke yet sophisticated way. The size is very managable, and it was easy for them to read any chapter several times to absorb the many layers of understanding. The illustrations were multi-national and did a fine job of representing women as well as men. My only suggestion would be that the second printing be done with higher contrast. It is a relief to have a thorough and complex 3-D text that is also accessable and satisfying for the students to read.
great 3-D overview.......2002-06-25
I used this book for a class and I found it very easy to follow and well organized. There were good visual examples from a wide variety of current artists. I liked that it involved a large amount of art theory, but also provided a good practical reference for the kinds of projects we did in class. Overall, I think it gave a very solid introduction to 3-D design.
Poor text and book........2002-05-21
I found this book a very poor text. The information was muddled, There was no educational objective. Nowhere was there any reference of the author's credentials (education nor art). The Photos were irrelevant, provincial and of poor form. Vocabulary had no educational quality nor purpose. It is a forty dollar magazine that is most overpriced.
For the general reader, there is no purpose. Nothing enlightening, broadening nor of memorable value.
Book Description
Featuring techniques for assemblage and surface alterations never before seen in a mixed-media art book (kit-bashing, wiring, egg-shell texture, casting and more), Altered Curiosities offers a new twist on a hot topic.
A fresh variety of projects (such as hair barrettes, jewelry, a drawer pull and a bird feeder) prove that artistic assemblage and collage styles can be expressed beyond wall art.
Readers will learn a new storytelling approach to their mixed-media art. Altered Curiosities goes beyond construction techniques to help readers discover how to create a personal narrative with objects and visually tell a story, not just infuse a piece with meaning or symbolism.
Two very important things make this book stand out from the crowd of other collage, mixed-media and assemblage titles: the projects (full of oddities and the unexpected) and the techniques--several of which have never been published before. A common element of Jane Wynn's style is to find an object, break it and put it together again (sometimes more than once), and she loves using anthropomorphic associations to tell stories in her projects. Step by step, readers will learn her unique method and her sought-after techniques. Along with surface alterations (faux-aging, patinas and the use of unusual household products) Altered Curiosities teaches metal etching with rubber stamps, simple wiring to create dramatic lighting, instruction for altering simple toy figures (making two-headed animals, for instance) and more.

A Must Have for Your Collection!!.......2007-10-15
I highly recommend this mixed media art book to add to your collection of treasured books! Fascinating, imaginative, soulful, artist Jane Wynn so generously shares with us many of her unique projects and clever techniques. Her prose will delight, warm your heart, and make you stop and think. This book is a wonderful celebration!!
A very funky book.......2007-10-12
Just when I thought I had seen all there was to assemblage out comes this book. Jane Ann Wynn has been extremely generous in sharing her techniques with us and also in encouraging us to use methods such as soldering that we might be too scared to use otherwise. One of the things I really like about the book is that the art work that is presented here is not cute and whimsical but groovy, edgy and even disturbing with a good dose of humour thrown in. The bird-feeder is really something else and the jewellery is very cool. Highly recommended.
Wonderful!.......2007-09-30
As an artist who loves to experiment with any form of altered art this book hits the spot. I was immediately attracted to this book because of the awesome cover then I opened it and started to read. I instantly got goose bumps and an overwhelming urge to CREATE SOMETHING! The photos are beautiful and leave you wanting more, more, more and Jane Wynn gives step by step instructions that make these works of art doable. She invites you into her world with wonderful stories that inspire and motivate you. If you are in a rut or just need that little bit of something to jumpstart your creativity this book if for you. This book is a treasure and should be a must for anyone interested in altered art.
Best Book Ever on Altered Items.......2007-09-28
I ordered the book Altered Curiosities and received it yesterday. I absolutely love this book. I have purchased others only to be disappointed. Jane Wynn gives indepth instructions and it is awesome. She really inspires you and shows you ways to get the creativity going and in directions you would never think about. This book is such a treasure and should be added to your collection for Altered items. What a talented creative mind and I hope she keeps writing more books because I will buy them all.
