Customer Reviews:
Picture Perfect is a Perfect lawn resource!.......2007-08-14
Picture Perfect is a must for anyone who is serious about their lawn. I found this book to be extremely informative and helpful in achieving the ideal lawn. It is very user friendly and makes obtaining the perfect yard obtainable for everyone.
Picasso of The Playing Field.......2007-07-02
Our lawn is looking great this year thanks to following the care and maintenance instructions in Picture Perfect. David Mellor's easy to follow guidelines on mowing make our lawn the prettiest in the neighborhood. Why do people scalp their lawns?
This book is not just about pretty pictures. David Mellor tells us about the facinating history of lawns. He shows us how to establish good grass from the ground up beginning with soil testing and fertilization and culminating with how to apply a distinctive design.
I am giving a copy of this book to my sixteen year-old nephew who started mowing lawns this summer. It will give him and edge over the competition.
After reading this book I see why David Halberstam called David Mellor "The Picasso of The Playing Field."
Perfect guide on a great subject.......2007-06-25
David Mellor shares his particular expertise with authority and in a straightforward way. I wanted to learn how to "design" my lawn like the pros and I got that and more from this book. It's a great supplement to your favorite basic lawn care guide (Mellor's other book, THE LAWN BIBLE, is a good one) and will have you mowing circles (or diamonds or stripes) around your neighbor's lawns.
Not Picture Perfect!.......2007-03-09
I wish I could recommend this book! I really do. You know when your 13-year old writes one of his/her first research papers and repeats him/herself in every other paragraph just to create "filler"? Well, that's exactly Mr. David R. Mellor's problem in his book, "Picture Perfect": he repeats himself over and over . . . and over again. Holy cow!
What IS a sign of a good "how to" book? Well, to me it is its thoroughness: you want to have all the info on the subject in one guide, right? (Or certainly, as close to it as possible.) Well, "Picture Perfect" is NOT perfect -- far from it.
There are many problems with the book. One, Mr. Mellor is a bad writer. His aforementioned repetition of many facts does not create an appreciation for diligence; it signifies a sense of belittlement and ineptitude. Furthermore, although his writing style is accessible for the most part, it is confusing at times during THE moments when it should be the most simple and easy to understand: in the chapter in which he describes how to actually make patterns, he is far too complicated in explaining a simple task . . . such as mowing parallel, adjacent lines in opposite directions! In the first few chapters, Mr. Mellor uses bullets and subchapters to enunciate clear and important points. Great! Yet when he finally gets to discussing the actual techniques of pattern making in Chapter 12, he lumps all points into one, making for a poor overview: the main points don't "stick" out. That's really too bad.
Two, the book is poorly organized. The first half -- yeap, half! -- is dedicated to A-Z lawncare. Come on! All he had to do was to state that there are many other books out there on lawncare, point them out, and get into the heart of THE subject. (That should have taken one paragraph.) And although very important, lawncare is NOT the subject of this treatise, right? (My favorite is Scotts.) Why try to outdo a book like Scotts in a few chapters . . . when the Scotts book covers lawncare brilliantly?! Makes no sense to me whatsoever! This IS, after all, a book on mowing patterns, NOT lawncare. All that Mr. Mellor had to do was to, perhaps, write an opening chapter of HIS advice, findings and nuances on lawncare, all of us having learned some from personal experience over the years. But no, Mr. Mellor tries to reinvent the wheel. In addition, to use black & white photographs in a book published in the 21st century is embarrassing! (No, not all photographs are black & white. But . . . ) Let me get this straight: this book deals with the visual sense, right? So wouldn't you want to use color photographs?! Get real! Furthermore, the illustrations in the chapter on making patterns are not used effectively: all mowing passes could have actually been shown in ONE illustration instead of several, thus making the instructions more accessible. Also, Mr. Mellor tells you that with practice, you will get better. OK, let me get this straight? I am supposed to pay $38.70 to be told that with practice I will get better at doing something? We already know that! That's the whole point of a "how to" book: it is supposed to teach you a subject so that you will decrease the amount of time for you to get good at something, right? Good Lord! (Nope, we're not done yet.) At the very end of the book, Mr. Mellor writes about some of his personal experiences when he worked at Milwaukee's County Stadium, one of which involved the chasing off of seagulls from the field. Again, let me get this straight: you are supposed to pay $38.70 to learn how another human being . . . chased away seagulls?! Mr. Mellor, you are very audacious! I thought this book is about making patterns on lawns? And finally, here is the greatest downfall of the book. The book is 160 pages long, yet ONLY 32 pages actually deal with creating lawn patterns. And actually, I am being too generous: only Chapter 14 deals specifically with pattern instruction which is . . . 18 pages long! So let me get this straight? You are expected to pay $38.70 for a book which only gives you 18 pages on that subject? Are you kidding me?!
Now, having made this last point, let's look at it from a different angle. What does the fact tell you that only 18 pages out of a 160-page book actually deal with the subject at hand? Well, it tells me that the subject matter is NOT all that complicated! Look, if you have, or even HAVE NOT, any gardening experience, but are practical and use common sense, you can create lawn patterns. Sure you can! It ain't that complicated as Mr. Mellor would lead you to believe. I was successful on my first try . . . and so will you.
Holy cow! Mr. Mellor, you need to seriously consider writing a second edition of this book in which you leave out the opening half on lawncare (and leave that to others), use color photographs only, and devote MUCH more effort and time to the actual subject: lawn patterns.
So, if you have ANY gardening savvy and do NOT need your hand held, then I highly recommend that you do NOT buy this expensive book. If you DO need to have your hand held, then buy this book . . . I guess.
Picture perfect: Mowing Techniques for Lawns, Landscapes, and Sports.......2007-01-16
The book is very small. I expected a larger book with lots of pictures. There are a few pictures, but the book itself was disappointing.
Book Description
Before he hit 400 home runs...
Before he was named
American League MVP...
Before he was AROD to
millions of fans...
He was Alex.
Just a kid who wanted to play baseball more than anything else in the world.
Baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez has drawn on his own childhood experiences to create this exciting picture book. It's the story of a boy named Alex who knows what it's like to swing at a wild pitch or have a ball bounce right between his legs. Alex is determined not to let his mistakes set him back—even if it means getting up at the crack of dawn to work on his hitting and fielding before school each day!
Full of the spirit of determination and joy in the game that put AROD in a league of his own, Out of the Ballpark is a gift from a great sports hero to every young player who dreams of becoming a star.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing -- consider Jorge Posada's "Play Ball!" instead.......2007-06-08
After reading Jorge Posada's excellent children's book, "Play Ball!" at least a dozen times at my four-year-old son's request, I was excited to see "Out of the Ballpark" by Alex Rodriguez, one of the great players of our time.
Although other reviewers seem to love the book, my son can barely tolerate it and will pick any other baseball book before this one. He doesn't light up like he does with Posada's book, or any of his baseball books, for that matter.
His favorites are the amazing Casey At the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888 (Caldecott Honor Book), the entertaining Casey Back at Bat, the beautifully illustrated Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth and a book that features his favorite player, Dear Ichiro.
The story felt like it was trying too hard to me and never really developed the great rhythm good children's book authors seem to find. Take note: this is a fictional story loosely based on events in A-Rod's life...a fact that isn't revealed until you've completed the story. I probably wouldn't have purchased the book had I known it was fiction.
When it comes to children's books, Posada hit a homerun. A-Rod, well, I'll give him a bloop single...and I'm giving him that for picking a decent illustrator!
Great for kids.......2007-03-15
I find this a great book with some wonderful surpises inside for young boys and girls who are just getting into baseball. They can learn what it means to be part of team and it shows respect to one another. My grandson had a great time with it.
Out of the Ballpark.......2007-03-10
Nicely written; very simply presented with good illustrations.
Children need to know the importance of long term goals and "practice makes perfect"...This story presents those values.
Great book for children!!!!.......2007-03-10
I bought this book for my grandson and he loved reading it. Any book that can hold his attention is well written. Thank you so much for writing it.
Out of the ball park.......2007-03-09
I bought this book for my godson Gage he is 6 and he loves this book because it is about baseball.
Product Description
Scholastic Books and Taggies, Inc. have joined together to create this finely crafted soft cover book entitled "My First Taggies® Book: Sweet Dreams". A soft fleece cover and beautifully embroidered interior spreads offer a unique opportunity for learning while snuggling! Featuring our Taggie tags that kids love to play with! This is already one of the UK's most popular soft books and it even washes clean! Measures 15cm square.
Amazon.com
Modeled after the popular Taggies baby blankets, My First Taggies Book is a soft fleece picture book with eight different looped ribbon tags to rub and pull and chew. The content of the book is very simple: three two-page spreads featuring a plush kitty, bunny, and puppy, along with accompanying rhymes. "Sweet dreams, little kitty,/ Rock-a-bye and nighty night." The point here is not the plot line, but the delightfully cuddly feel of the book and the interactive tags. Designed to be tactile and visually stimulating, each tag has a different print or texture, much like the satin edges of blankets or clothing labels that so intrigue babies and toddlers. A gentle and safe way to introduce the very youngest "readers" to the world of books. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Customer Reviews:
NIce book........2007-10-12
I thought this would be a great book but was disapointed. The tags don't have any texture on them so my sone doesn't really care about it.
Baby Loves Taggies Book.......2006-11-10
My six-month-old loves her Taggies Book. (She received it when she was four months old.) Now, she likes to hold it and rub the tags. It is perfect size to lay across her lap while she is in her car seat. Very nice.
My son loves those little tags.......2006-11-04
When my son first got the book, he was absolutely fascinated with the tags. He also loves to feel the velvety pictures. And it's also one of the first books I began reading to him.
Perfect for bedtime.......2005-08-25
This is a wonderful book that my nine-month-old has enjoyed since we received it as a gift when he was 2 months old. I don't understand the other reviews that say "it isn't much of a story". "Sweet Dreams", as the title implies, is a bedtime book. And it is perfect for that. Short, simple, engaging but not exciting, it is oh-so-soft and very comforting. My son loves it. He touches each animal ("kitty", "bunny", & "puppy") as we read, and I even stroke his face with the book once at the end as a final soother. It is the second of the two books we read at bedtime, the first being Baby Animals, which is a more active "Tough & Feel" book, but a good transition from active to night-night. I highly recommend Sweet Dreams for anyone looking for a comforting quiet book for bedtime reading with their baby. At nine-months, he seems far from outgrowing it; we will enjoy this book for some time to come.
An update at 13 months: still a wonderful way to go to bed. He can be teething or excited or anything other than sleepy. But when we start this book, he settles right down and gets snuggly and sleepy. After all, kitty, bunny and puppy are asleep in their beds, so it must be a good idea!
A perfect gift for your newest adopted family member.......2005-04-04
I think this is a perfect gift for any baby shower or new addition to your family. Especially for those who are adopting a child International like we did. We wheren't sure how much stimulation our daughter received in her Social Welfare Institute in China and so we brought this colorful book along. The book is a soft flannel and each tag is has a different color and texture and what child doesn't like tags of any sort. If you find this book in the book store or sometimes in a gift shop you can choose the colored tags and textures, for each one is different.
As a reading book, this is not and I am not really sure that's what this book was intended to be. I think this book is for stimulation of your babies sences. Can't say enough about this book and the taggie blanket, you just can't go wrong bringing to a baby shower on as one of the items packed in your already full bag on your way to be united with your daughters and or sons!

My son and I love to read about the curious monkey. This book is great!
george is wonderful.......2002-10-16
George is good to read after an exasperating day with your toddler or preschooler. It reminds you that it could be worse, you could REALLY have a monkey to care for, and your monkeys don't really mean to get into mischief, they are just very very curiouus.
Just as good as the original stories.......2000-06-22
To date my daughter has been reading the "Curious George" books that belonged to my husband when he was a child. I was a little skeptical that the newly written stories would capture the same spirit as those written more than 30 years ago. However, my daughter absolutely loved it especially as both the storyline and the illustrations were more detailed than usual and made it fun for her to point out different things and extend into a discussion with us about beaches, lifesaving etc. Like her other "George" books she has reread this one over and over.

Nina Laden's illustrations in this simple, rhyming board book are truly magical. The format is straightforward: on alternating two-page spreads, the words "Peek a" are repeated, opposite an illustrated page with a die-cut hole, behind which lurks a cow ("MOO!"), a green ghost ("BOO!"), and a mirror (you guessed it, "YOU!"). The youngest readers will delight in trying to guess who--or what--is peeking through the window, and can easily grip the baby-fist-size holes to turn the pages for the answers. The picture of the "ZOO!" is fabulous. Through the hole, all that can be seen is a wild pattern of colors, stripes, and spots. Turn the page, and find a wild kingdom of animals, one in front of the other: peacock, zebra, penguin, cheetah, elephant, and more. Ready for more peekaboo fun? Try Nina Laden's Ready, Set, Go! . (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Great for one-year-olds, according to my grand-nieces!.......2007-09-15
My grand-nieces, who just turned one year old, were fascinated with this book as soon as I gave it to them. That's the best reward I could have gotten!
Great board book for infants and their parents.......2007-08-31
My son has loved this book since we gave it to him at about 5 months old. He's now 7 months and in the "grab and eat everything" phase, but still settles down and studies the pictures in Peek-a-Who when we read it to him. I've already ordered several more for baby shower gifts. And just like some other reviews state, it's nice and short.
Her Favorite.......2007-08-15
This is my little girls favorite book. Sometimes we read it a few times at a time.
love it!.......2007-07-30
This is one of the best board books I have ever come across. My daughter received this as a gift at 5 months old. She loved it then and she STILL loves it (she's 9 months now). She will sit and look at it for long periods of time. It's also easy enough for my 3yo to read so he will sit and read it to my daughter. :)
TERRIFIC BOOK!!.......2007-07-15
MY kids LOVE this book. After reading it once, my 16 month old son could finish the sentences for me! I recommend this book for ANYONE with babies/toddlers. I have 1 y/o twins. One is a reader and one is a non-reader. Even my non-reader loves these books. Anything by Nina Laden will do!!
Book Description
Even with a 12-0 loss to start the '88 season, Cal Ripken, Jr. had plenty of reasons to love being a Baltimore Oriole. He was playing alongside his brother Bill, and his father, Cal Sr., was managing the team. They'd win the next one. But the Orioles didn't win their next game, or the next, and soon what was supposed to be a dream season for Cal slid into a nightmare of losses no one saw coming.
With brilliant and expressive color paintings from Ron Mazellan, future hall-of-famer Cal Ripken, Jr. shares the ups and downs of the Orioles' record 21-game losing streak, and reflects on the rewards of hard work, regardless of what's on the scoreboard.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Cal Ripken book.......2007-05-13
If you're an Orioles fan, the 1988 season was a horrible time. The O's lost 21 in a row to start the year. Cal Ripken retells this season in a children's book that teaches perseverance.
I bought this book for my 6-month-old son, knowing he won't be able to understand it for several years. The pictures are outstanding. (If you're an O's fan like myself, you'll get a kick out of seeing familiar names drawn as art.) And the message is a positive one.
I highly recommend the book. One question, Cal: When's the book on the 1989 "Why Not?" Orioles?
Book Description
"I've learned it takes heart to come out a winner every time, whether you win or lose."
--
Michael Jordan
Jonathan wants to win more than anything. But the Badgers haven't seen much of that lately. For Jonathan, the only good thing about the baseball season is being on the same team as his best friend, Michael. Jonathan wants to believe in himself and his team, but it's getting harder to do.
Then when Michael's uncle Jack tells the boys about his golden rules of baseball, Jonathan is confused. What could Uncle Jack mean -- there is more to a good game than winning or losing?
Deloris and Roslyn M. Jordan, mother and sister of basketball superstar Michael Jordan, tell a family story of personal best, friendship, and teamwork that will inspire. Kadir Nelson's radiant illustrations illuminate this story of what it really means to be a champion.
Customer Reviews:
This book is fair.......2007-08-11
I am a school teacher in MA. I noticed this book was on the summer school reading list for students entering the third grade, so I decided to read it. I am not a fan of books written by celebrities or relatives of celebrities. If Deloris Jordan was not Michael Jordan's mother it never would have been published. The plot and dialogue are hackneyed.
Sports lovers will enjoy this book.......2007-07-16
My 5 year old loves baseball. So this book was the perfect book for him. The illustrations were great, and the story was great. The golden rules are wonderful, and are a great starting poing in applying them outside of baseball. He reads this book frequently. Highly recommended.

BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-06
I liked the illustrations. Mia quit one day and the next day she changed her mind but someone said "No, you can't play" and I think that's a good lesson. If she wants to play, she should not have quit in anger.
Teaches good sportsmanship..........2006-07-12
The story is a favorite in our house. It's got cute pictures and a great message about being a good sport. When Mia quits she is made to sit out the next time and she realizes that it's more fun to play then to get upset about the game. It's nice that you don't know if she makes a goal at the end because it doesn't really matter if she does. What matters is that she's being a good sport.
My only remotely negative comment is minor - they use the word hate. It's not a big deal but we're working on having the kids NOT use that word so it turns into a "ummmm...she said hate..." Not a big deal at all and a good opportunity to show an appropriate way to use the word but it's there nonetheless.
Great message for little ones!.......2006-07-06
My four year old twins boys love this book and really got the message of the book. They just started playing soccer and were having a difficult time enjoying themselves and didn't want to see it through. After reading them this book, they see that it's just for fun and it's just a game.
mia hamm is a winner!.......2006-05-10
i like this book because it tells you to never give up and have fun even if you are losing.
Winners Never Quit is a winner.......2005-10-16
I purchased this book for my eight year old daughter. Not only is she a fan of playing soccer but loves Mia Hamm. Although the story was below her reading level, it made no difference to her or me! The story teaches how to be a good sport and still be competitive at the same time. I think this is an important lesson for children and adults to learn. The illustrations were adorable! The autographed photograph at the end was a bonus surprise! I didn't know that was part of the book.
