GREAT FOR THE ASPIRING COMIC WRITER!.......2003-05-28
This is a great text that takes you through the creative process of several unique writing styles. The variety of script and drawings from a host of authors, really made this book encouraging to the aspiring comic writer. I'm looking forward to getting Panel Two when it comes out.
Why didn't some body think of this sooner?.......2002-05-07
It seems like such an obvious good idea.
It's a wonderful glimpse into the creative process.
Just received it last night, and I'm already half through it. I haven't done that since I was eleven and got Stan Lee's How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Not that this book has any similarity to that one. This is not a how to book. Its a more intimate, than any instructional book. Its a similar difference in experience to watching a biography to reading someones private correspondence. The presentation adds to the feeling as well.
Better than seeing pencils, better than watching a demo, or hearing someone try to explain the creative process. You actually see it and are part of it because this is what the artist sees, while he is in the process.
As a comic book fan for years and creative hopeful (which I believe is a large part of the intended audience), I hope this is first in a long line.
Great job, thanks Mr. Gertler.
Cool, helpful, worth the read.......2002-04-04
One thing that's bugged me in my various efforts at writing a comic book script is that no reference I checked seemed to agree as to what format is right. As this book explains, that's because there IS no "right" or "wrong" format, just different ways to do it.
Every script in this volume shows you something. Gaiman's reads like a personal note to the artist, Wolfman shows how plot-first can work, McDuffie shows you how to work in a recap, Kevin Smith shows a more movie-script style of writing and Kurt Busiek's entry... heck, when I read the original comic book I thought it was one of the greatest comic book stories I ever read, but the script for "The Nearness of You" just made it all the more powerful.
If you want to try to write comics, you could do a lot worse than picking up this book.

very very good.......2007-08-30
I would say that this is written for an advanced beginner in that you should be comfortable with the tools and getting around the menus. I have only been working with digital photography for a year and a half and installed photoshop cs2 about 8 months ago..This book will help you so much if you just complete the excercises (examples) starting at the beginnning..It's loaded with tips for the beginner.. I highly recommend it...
Great Book!.......2007-08-23
I am not one to leave a review but this book was so easy to read and follow that I have to let everyone know. Great tips, easy to follow with color pages and images....I just love it!
Photoshop CS2 FUN!.......2007-05-24
I learned a lot with this book. Exremely easy to follow instructions, and great tips!
An excellent resource.......2007-04-04
I purchased this book soon after I acquired a "beginners guide" to Photoshop CS2. Like most people, I wanted to apply some PS techniques to my images straight away. The "Top 100" tricks includes the majority of techniques I require and actually helps to understand the theory of the more formal beginners guide. This book does not assume that the reader knows all the terms and tools and by following the very clearly illustrated step by step instructions, even newbies to PS can achieve startling results. I've scouted round bookshops looking at the numerous PS CS2 publications - this is as good as any and better than most.
Excellent addition!.......2007-03-12
As a high school digital photography teacher I have found this book an excellent addition to my photoshop book collection. It is very easy for anyone to follow and we have great use from the five copies I purchased.
Book Description
How to choose a name and create a catchy mark
After the business plan, the first step for any new company is choosing a name-a seemingly simple activity which can be extremely challenging. The next and equally challenging step is designing a logo that is eye catching, appropriate, and reflective of the chosen name of the business. Even for the seasoned designer, this is a remarkably difficult task.
Logo Savvy will help readers understand how to define the right approach and achieve an innovative and unique solution for both the name and the logo design. Chapters showcase companies whose identities have evolved visually through the introduction of a great name, as well as companies which have developed a visual identity in tandem with a name. Case studies, corresponding side bars, and tips provide designers with the inspiration and tools they need to find the right approach for their own clients.

Inspirational.......2007-02-07
I bought this book to stimulate creative ideas in order to develop a new logo and stationery for our company. I'm not sure if everyone will rave about our new logo as that is a matter of individual taste, but I believe it's a 100% improvement over the old one.
This book did a great job of inspiring new ideas and reaffirming personal tastes. Plus, looking at neat logos, business cards, and letterhead in one compilation can spark casual conversation amongst strangers, friends and family since everyone has an opinion, right? For that reason alone, this would make an excellent coffee table book.
Great Logo's! .......2006-07-25
This is a great book with great logo's in it. I was captivated as I flipped through the pages. However, it does not give you any information as to how a particular design company came up with a clients logo. It is strictly just logo designs and nothing more. But facinating work.
Awsome.......2006-03-04
This was a great book. I plan on buying the rest in the series. It is full of great work and really helped me get ideas for designing other business systems.
The Culture A.D. Review.......2005-10-07
Culture Advertising Design shoot from the hip review. Letterhead & Logo Design 8 is solid design inspiration. This a "good look" for designers.
Excellent.......2005-07-24
i love this look, it's an excellent book for business cards and letterhead design, gave me good inspirations. worth to buy.

Tips of questionable usefulness.......2005-02-15
Written by a guy who works in human resources, this book is not intended for Photoshop Elements 3 (PE3) beginners, but nor is it sophisticated enough to satisfy advanced users. Instead, it has 100 usage tips of highly dubious usefulness to the typcical PE3 user, presented in no particular order. The biggest problem of this book is how cluttered and busy visually each page is. Even when the tip deals with a non-graphical topic like increasing the amount of RAM PE3 uses, the page is littered with background graphics, and you can barely see the relevant dialog box screen shot. Flipping through the book you'll likely get a headache from the circus of numbers and circles that dance on the pages like little red monsters. This book is a total visual disaster. (Don't believe me? Check out pp. 88-89, "crop photos to remove clutter" and tell me you don't see clutter there.)
The truth is, books on PE3 *can* be clean-looking and useful. My two favorites are Julie King's "Everyday Photoshop Elements 3.0" and David Busch's "Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0: Photographer's Guide." These books are not only easy on the eyes and mind, but have useful tips and advice. And they don't have the kind of silly marketing hypes this book's cover features: "TOP 100"; "5-STAR System"; "Tips & Tricks."
Review by Alaska Apple Users Group Member.......2005-01-07
Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks Photoshop Elements 3 is a collection of tips and tricks to assist an intermediate user in fully utilizing the powers of Photoshop Elements 3. Although I am excited about enhanced powers of Photoshop Elements 3 I was disappointed that certain enhancements of the new program were not available to Mac users. When I first glanced at the reviews of Elements 3 and read about the organizer tool I was excited - in fact it was one of the reasons I decided to upgrade from Elements 2. I guess that is what I get for leaping without properly looking. That being said there are tremendous enhancements to Elements 3 that make it a worthwhile upgrade for Mac users and Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks Photoshop Elements 3 is a guide designed to take full advantage of the program's powerful tools.
Thus, when I was reviewing this publication my disappointment was not the fault of the author, Denis Graham, but of Adobe in creating enhancements for Photoshop Elements 3 that were not available for Mac users. One cannot fault a publication for covering all the enhancements a software package. However, Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks Photoshop Elements 3 has three chapters covering an area that is unavailable to Mac users. If there is a legitimate criticism of this book it is that the book fails to include information on how a Mac user could use the Elements 3 browser tool in combination with the IPhoto's album tool to combine the powers of Elements 3 with the photo organizing tools of IPhoto 4.
I would not recommend for a beginner. However, it is a great collection of tips to fully utilize the powers of Elements 3. If you are familiar with Elements 3 but do not use it everyday then this is the publication for you. Where it shines is in the manner it can assist you if you have taken some pictures and you need to edit them or enhance them or you need to be creative with your pictures. The tip for the job you want to complete is easy to find. The book has a brief description of what you can do and then it graphically walks you through the steps. You do need to be familiar with Photoshop Elements because book seems to put you into the middle of the process and does not explain how you got there. Although the text in the graphical page shots are very small and difficult to read it gives you a good enough idea of what to expect and lays it out in simple steps. It lives up to its reputation as a visual guide.
The book is organized into 10 chapters. The last three are of little use to Mac users because they deal with how to utilize Photoshop Elements 3 organizing tools. Each chapter has a brief discussion of what is contained in the chapter. Each tip has a brief discussion and a screen shot of the action being taken with numbered steps to accomplish the action. The end of the section includes, inside a box, a special tips section and suggestions on how to use particular tools in a more powerful manner. The layout is very pleasing to the eye and it will be a book that I will keep handy for quick references and tips on the use of Photoshop Elements 3.
Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks Photoshop Elements 3 is an excellent guide for the intermediate level user. The cost of the book is very reasonable and I would recommend it as an invaluable tool for those people who, although they do not use Photoshop Elements 3 on a regular basis, want to utilize its powerful tools.

Beautiful & Creative.......2005-10-10
This book is very beautifully designed and put together. Wonderfully eclectic. A good reminder about how we fo and can get inspired by the smallest things. Also very funny. Read one story everyday to remind yourself that you really are a creative.
Inspired!.......2005-08-12
This is a fun read, like you are listing to the conversations between the author and the 40 top graphics designers. Besides their works, this book also let you know more about these designers in an approachable way. Different disigners get their inspiration in different ways. I am definity inspired by their conversation through this book.
Entertaining Motivation.......2005-08-02
I love the the featured designers' snapshots of themselves and their work space. The interviews are really well done, and I especially love the questionnaires with the designers' own scibbled notes and illustrations. It's really, really entertaining! You not only get to truly know them, but this book shows how unique these successful designers are and how they are deeply motivated-that in itself is inspiring. Every creative person should have this book. It's great fun and reference.
Fresh, Fuzzy & Fun!.......2005-07-20
I saw the author-Pash, speak at the How Design Conference in Chicago (June 2005). His presentation was about how he got the idea for this book. It was very cool and inspiring. I couldn't wait to get a copy and start reading it. This book is filled with 40 top graphic designers perspectives on what inspires them. Photographs of the designers and their work stations. As well as a survey page that they all filled out (and one for you to fill out too). It is the kind of book that is so much fun to read. You feel like you are right there in the moment. This book draws you in, includes you and most of all inspires you. This is a great book for a graphic designer to own.
Truly Inspiring.......2005-06-20
After buying this book (and being lucky enough to have it signed by the author!) I just couldn't wait to flip through it's pages and find out what inspires my heroes in the world of graphic design. I love the format the author has chosen for the interviews and being able to get a sneak peak into the designers' studios and see what inspires them. This book will remain a timeless addition to my bookshelf and I know I'll refer to it when I get stuck or need a bit of inspiration myself. The questionnaire is awesome, and I love how different they all are. It's a wonderful book and one that belongs in every designer's library.

It's O.K........2006-11-15
I probably wouldn't buy it again. I like a lot of detail.
A good method.......2006-03-18
As always the layout and the content to this book is superb. Quick learning is facilitated and I look forward to the next one.
Book Description
This book is a powerful reminder that there's more than one solution to every creative problem. Author Mark Wasserman has created a unique experiment in design that is much like the process of remixing music. Top designers were given the source files to one of 37 original designs and asked to reinterpret the original art into new creations. Ultimately, the project was not about making a design better, but about different visual approaches. Besides being a visual treat, these remixes can also serve as a creative jolt for those inevitable times when designers need a little extra inspiration.
Each section starts with an original design and detailed Q&A-style captions that explain the concept and process behind the design. The following redesigns--ranging from wild freeform creations to more subtle changes--are paired with insightful interviews that give readers a rare glimpse into the creative thought process.
In all, the book features 160 designers, from 20 countries around the world. Designers involved include such notables as Stefan Sagmeister, Dave Eggers, eBoy, KINSEYvisual, Joshua Davis (PrayStation), Modern Dog, The Heads of State, WeWorkForThem, Jemma Gura, UPSO, Aesthetic Apparatus, Brent Rollins (Ego Trip), Plinko, Deanne Cheuk (neomu), 2Advanced, Nonconceptual, Jon Santos, HONEST, kozyndan, Milky Elephant, Patent Pending (SubPop), Mr. Jago, and many many more.
With page after page full of never-before-seen artwork, this book is equally at home in a designer's bookshelf, and a non-designer's coffee table.
Customer Reviews:
Exercise for the Creative Imagination.......2007-06-08
This collection of original ads and the subsequent exercise done by at least 4 different design firms is a very interesting approach to an art book. I enjoyed the accompanying "interview" with each designer so you could align the feeling you got from the rework with their explanation of the approach.
So far so good..........2007-05-07
I work as a designer myself in an advertising agency and have only had this book for a short time, but really enjoy looking and reading through it. It has givien me inspiration and motivation in my own work. Also it has been a good way of seeing how other designers and artist percieve the same idea or concept. This book is great for anyone who wants to see or learn how other designers work, it's a good motivational tool.
Inspirational!.......2007-02-09
Right when I opened this book I already knew that I would be hooked. The idea that certain design work would be redesigned by other designers helps me to see that there is never one way to solving a problem. If you want a new perspective on a project you are on, perhaps this book will help!
Totally reinvents the 'redesign' genre of design books.......2004-09-30
If design books have one general fault, it is failing to keep up with the curve, the leading edge of graphic design. Things change so quickly. The subgenre of redesign books has been among the worst offenders in this area. That's because many have been content to take 15 year old designs and reconfigure them for today, in the process inadvertently passing off more or less standard results as special work. This book is a total break with this lazy tradition of contrasting your father's design and your own generation's. It does that by picking relatively recent designs for "what if" rethinking. The results play out as mind-blowing re-envisionings of already edgy design. To me that's what sets this book apart: the pieces being redesigned aren't ancient, they aren't the least bit stodgy. In most cases, the originals up for redesign could probably themselves have appeared in fairly recent design annuals, and may have, in many instances.
Rethink Redesign Reconstruct is a fresh, exciting book that stands out in a genre of the design book field that has settled into a comfortable rut. I would call it a definite must have among current design books.

Customer Reviews:
As a photographer it was..... disappointing.......2007-01-12
Maybe graphic designers will like it but I did not find the images something I wanted look at. Made my head hurt. It is packed with a lot of filler: reasons the artist did what he did, what his favorite things are, and why this project was so so difficult for him.
The best purchase I have made as a graphic designer-besides my computer.......2006-07-13
I work as a professional graphic design artist as well as a fine artist, and I have spent literally hours combing through the Photoshop how-to books in order to learn more innovative apporaches to the program.
Finding this book has made all of the work I have done to learn Photoshop worthwhile, and I really feel like it unleashed my ability to work with this program as an artist. Not only did it give me a ton of techniques to use when creating images, but I also turn to it whenever I have "artists-block" and just need to try something new. I began reading it when I was on vacation and I didn't even have a computer to work on, I was so intrigued by the thorough narrations of each artist explaining their unique techniques. The images really are stunning and tremendously multilayered; it was very exciting for me to learn new and unexpected ways to create images using Photoshop tools.
Seriously, this book has had a huge impact on my development as a graphic artist, and has allowed me to really expand as an artist in general.
Just another dumb Photoshop Book.......2005-09-16
Ok this book is just another bla Photoshop book. Nothing great not nothing new that has not already been mentioned in other photoshop books
Illustration Inspiration.......2005-06-23
Photoshop tennis anyone? In Photoshop Secrets twenty designers face off in ten different matches, two designers to a match. One designer starts an image through a combination of photo clips and Photoshop actions then passes it to another designer for the next "volley". Each match has ten volleys and produces ten completely unique images. These are images that fit the digital illustration genre. If you're looking for photorealistic techniques, check out one of Bert Monroy's books. How much you'll learn about Photoshop techniques certainly depends on your current knowledge level, but based on what I found this book will give you a few interesting things to try and, even more, a good bit of inspiration if you're interested in doing some professional illustration.
Disappointing.......2004-10-07
I realize that it's subjective, but the images in this book are not "stunning". Many are a jumble bag of doodles and diddling. Some are interesting. Hidden in the "tennis plays" there are some tips on Photoshop image making, but it's difficult to consider looking for them because of the dreariness of the imagery. This book presents the case for me that it may be best to check these kinds of books out more (e.g, reviewing the pages available at Amazon or actually handling in a bookstore).
Book Description
Valuable Insight Into What Makes a Logo Work
*Subject of logos is one of three top-selling areas in design books
*From the respected author of Logo, Font and Lettering Bible
*Provides insight into successful logos by showing previous iterations
With a convenient horizontal format, The Secret Life of Logos showcases a spectrum of logos (including rejected versions of the logo) allowing readers to determine what leads to a successful design. Featuring hundreds of logos never seen before, the book visually showcases the creative process behind each logo's development, and the behind-the-scenes decision making done by designers and clients."
Customer Reviews:
I wanted sketches.......2007-08-02
I really wanted to see the pencil- or pen sketched beginnings, quotes from clients and designers on how they felt at each step, and stuff about the creative process. I'd rather have much fewer projects (like 5) and many more details (like 10 pages about each project). 1 page for each company is not enough. I wanted to get inside the heads of the individual designers, not the owner of the dang firm or the art director or something, who didn't even think any of the ideas up! I wanted to use it to explain the design process to clients and potential clients. This won't do.
This is just a book full of logo design proposals, showing you the proposals and the logos that were selected. Then is has wordy, wordy (boring text, really) stuff about the client- design firm discussions.
BORING! Don't buy it. If you do, and don't like it, be a smarty, and follow my advice next time, K?
a great book on logos.......2007-07-19
This book is not only fun to read, but very informative. The author did great interviews with each designer and I got a pretty good idea of how each logo was created. The book is very organized and each logo got one full page with alternative ideas for the final product. It is a great coffee table book as well.
Loved it!!.......2007-07-04
I bought this book for my daughter who is studying computer graphics. I started paging through it and I couldn't put it down! It is interesting, creative, and very inspiring. It gives you a sense that it's okay to make mistakes during the process and mistakes sometimes spark more creativity. It really displays the importance of "listening" to your client. Listening is the inspiration for creativity. I loved seeing the logos that weren't selected and why they weren't and also the story behind the ones that were chosen and why they were.
Excellent for teaching or inspiration.......2007-05-21
For those in the design field and those just entering it, this is the perfect book for taking you step-by-step through the process of designing a logo as described by some of the world's best designers. With a little humor and a truck load of useful information, the editor (himself a designer with a few of his logos also in the book) interviews each designer finding out their tricks of the trade and how they get inspiration. The best advice comes in how to deal with difficult clients and what to do when your logo, though awesome, doesn't make the final cut. A must read for all designers of every level.
