Book Description
Many people think modernist architecture never flowered in California north of the San Fernando Valley. NorCalMod dispels that notion in a copiously illustrated history showcasing extraordinary examples of its proud contribution to the Bay Area and environs. As a style, modernist architecture was hotly debated in its day (why create modern structures where such distinctive Victorian and Arts and Crafts buildings already existed?) pulling heavyweights such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Lewis Mumford, and Walter Gropius into the fray. Ultimately, that existing "Bay Region Style" would remain the area's architectural hallmark, but not before hundreds of important modernist projects, many still standing yet unjustly neglected today, had been established. The remarkable photos in this book open our eyes to a long-lost chapter in the history of California architecture and make NorCalMod a volume to be enjoyed by those interested in California history and style as well as by architecture students and professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Of both particular and general value; a fine piece of work........2007-05-30
This is an accessible, well-written and thoughtful book; a rarity in current architectural discourse.
Furthermore, it is handsomely designed and illustrated with beautiful archival photography.
Though it focuses on the seemingly narrow topic of the neglected/suppressed history of modern architecture in Northern California, its value is much broader.
More generally, it provides lucid insights into the mechanisms of architectural history and, by extension, the very nature by which we come to understand and appreciate our built environment in the present age.
Great, Important Work.......2007-05-17
This underappreciated topic finally gets the attention it deserves. Great photos, interviews, etc which are obviously the result of extensive research. Color photos would have been nice.

Genius Moves Beyond the Predictable.......2001-12-22
For almost a decade, New York Times art director Steven Heller has contributed a column to PRINT magazine called "Separated at Birth," inwhich he features twin-like pairs of otherwise unrelated designs. In 1993, he and Julie Lasky wrote an entire book on "appropriation" in design, titled Borrowed Design: Use and Abuse of Historical Form (Van Nostrand Reinhold). This book is in part an extension of that, in the sense that it unearths and juxtaposes examples of graphic design that seem to be indebted to earlier efforts in art and design. It is shown convincingly, for example, that the abstract crosses in the work of the Russian Constructivists were probably inspired by the clerical garb of Russian Orthodox priests in the 15th century; or that the famous pointing hand in James Montgomery Flagg's "I Want You For the U.S. Army" poster (1917) was anticipated by a ubiquitous advertising display for a drink called Moxie (1911) and a World War I recruiting poster (1914) in which Lord Kitchener (in a pose identical to that of Uncle Sam) "points a finger" at unenlisted British males. For good or bad, this book has very little text: Other than a brief paragraph that introduces each icon, its only commentary is a well-written opening essay. But it offers an almost unparalleled wealth of more than 500 full-color illustrations of historic examples of graphic design. -Roy Behrens, Ballast
Recurring themes and styles.......2001-04-08
This book illustrates the recurring ideas, themes, styles, and forms that graphic designers have used over the past century. It shows me that nothing is really new, but it takes a talented designer to make the old seem like never before.
Book Description
From the Jolly Green Giant to bumbling Cap'n Crunch, advertising characters are as much a part of twentieth-century America as the familiar products they symbolize. Culled from one of the world's most extensive collections of promotional product icons, What a Character! presents a nostalgic assortment of advertising figures, including some of the most popular characters ever created. Lively, full-color photographs and an informative text offer an entertaining look at the remarkable history and enduring design of these pop culture icons, with their timeless appeal for consumers of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Small folk, big sellers.......2002-01-20
This delightful book of at least three hundred photos of advertising characters shows the public face of commercial America. Companies realised that a three-dimensional figure built brand awareness. Look through the photos and you have to admit they do look cute and so very collectable too.
This book is the author's second attempt at the same subject, he wrote an earlier book called 'Advertising Character Collectibles', more or less the same items in each book but the earlier copy had perhaps a bit more historical detail about the companies. I prefer 'What a Character', the photography and design are so much better and I think these count for a lot in a strongly visual book.
Both books have a photo of the character I would love to have, the Kraft Cameraman from Kraft Television Theatre. Yours for fifty cents and the end flap from a Velveeta carton in 1954, yours now for at least $100 without the end flap!
***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.
BTW The author has produced another super book along the same lines: 'Meet Mr. Product' (ISBN 0811835898) and published by Chronicle, too.
Great gift for the bright and quirky.......2001-06-11
I ran across this book in a offbeat-stuff boutique and couldn't put it down. An amazingly comprehensive view of all kinds of advertising characters over a century. This can't help bring back childhood memories, whether you're 20 or 85. And the writing is quite interesting as well. This one quickly made my gift list for some hard-to-choose person's birthday or christmas.
Super Snappy!.......2000-05-24
I love this book and love giving it as a gift as well. The thick colored photographs glorify these quirky, spooky, adorable, impish, goofy figures. This is not just another boomer collector on my kitchy 50's coffee table book. Oh no! The writing is musical, provocative and sociologically insightful. I'll never look at an advertising character again in the same way. Chronicle does tasteful stuff but this book with it's tribe of characters is a yummier feast for those who long for magic from our breakfast cereal and motor oil and in moments once spent between the twilight zone and Mr. Clean . Bye bye kittie!
Book Description
How did artists of the twentieth century use their work to respond to their unique personal experiences and moment in history? This provocative question is explored in this engaging new book on American art. By focusing on broad, defining themes, embodied in the work of such pivotal artists as Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, the authors look at how art provided a means for re-imagining America, visualizing what it had become, and where it might go in a century of turbulent change.
Richly illustrated with 400 color images, Imagining America is organized around three main themes: nature and the ways diverse artists responded to the transformation of the landscape from pastoral to industrial; how artists as different as Thomas Eakins and Jackson Pollock demonstrated the perpetual inclination to reinvent both personal and national identity; and the ways that key artists like Stuart Davis, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat taught us to understand the media and popular culture on a deeper level. The authors also provide a context of social history and parallel developments in American music and film.
With an innovative design, a fabulous selection of iconic images, and an engaging juxtaposition of visual themes, Imagining America presents American art and artists in a completely new light.

Blah!.......2003-01-07
The only thing I have to critisize on this specific volume is, that it overrepresents a couple of artists and leaves out so many. Other than that , looking at the "critics" here... I see all the blurb that always comes up when it comes to erotica - there is always a reason why this specific work is bad, why there are maybe some nebulous other ones that are not that bad(but probably will be shredded by a similar reviewer on their page...) People that classify Picasso as a disturbed scribbler, maybe just shouldn't write about art or keep it with Norman Rockwell.
Improved artwork over what 17th, 18th, 19th century offered.......2002-09-27
Artork improves compared to the 17th-18th and 19th century collections, but it is still often ugly. The gems are few - but those are delicious. I went looking for some of the best artists to see if they had non-erotic works and can't find them. These few were able to sketch/paint people who looked real and maintain an artistic style. One man could run his work in any modern gentlemans magazine and people would wonder who this fabulous new sexy author was, he's that high quality.
Mostly, though, these are repulsively ugly or amateurish works. Picasso's erotica is nothing but the doodles of a bored kid in math class who fills a page with scribblings about genitalia; if you are a Picasso fan, they are true to his norm - but people who judge by quality will laugh. Non-Picasso fans can only laugh at his disturbed works as silly.
Either the editor chose the wrong artists, or maybe most of the people dealing in erotica have a sick viewpoint of sex. The one constant them that comes across is that these people think sex is ugly. (Only one or two refute the idea with pretty artwork.)
Which is what a lot of these are; bad drawings by sick people or at least presenting sick ideas of sexuality.
I've seen a lot of non-erotic nudes and I think overall the reason erotica does has had a bad name in many circles is that it is so poorly done as to give it an ugly reputation. Playboy and more hardcore sources overshadow the overall gloomy, ugly, often silly quality of these works. Indeed, Playboy is mostly respected for beautiful presentations of women; few people would respect the low quality of the grungy works shown here. Except art scholars who have a fad for the stuff.
Mostly this is a collection of ugly pictures about sex.
Dirty pictures by any other name.......2001-08-08
This series is supposedly a study of erotica through the ages. It is nothing more than a compliation of dirty pictures. Save your money. If you want dirty pictures...there are better books. If you want something that seriously explores erotica over the past couple hundred years this is NOT the place to look. Boring.
Great Quality Book.......2001-06-23
This is a fabulous look at the erotic are in the early 20th century. The Quality of the book is astounding considering its low price. It is listed as a soft back, but the cover is thicker than most soft back books. The size is that of a trade size copy but the quality of the paper both inside and outside completely outstrips that of the average trade paperback. The colors are so bright and clear that I feel as if I'll get my fingers wet when I touch the pages.
The prints of the erotic art itself, which range from black and white to color to line drawings, are incredible. The erotic content and the impact of the art itself range from the sublime, to the grotesque, to the simply beautiful.
While I rarely buy any art books, they are too bulky for apartment living and expensive besides this series promises to lend itself to both the series and the not so series collector of books. This is a beautiful book.

An excellent overview blending visuals with a running commentary on fashion's influence.......2006-01-02
The history of the 20th century can be revealed through its fashion trends, and Gerda Buxbaum Icons Of Fashion: The 20th Century proves this with an overview of fashion trends and revolutions. Yes, there are the icons of fashion to testify to these changes: Chanel, Karan and others - but also fine photos capturing styles ranging from body stockings to military and cocktail dress; all contained in an excellent overview blending visuals with a running commentary on fashion's influence.

Beautiful and Comprehensive.......2003-01-09
I have only just begun this book (20 pages in), and I am enthralled. So many fashion books are written chronologically, so this book, arranged by theme and designer, is an interesting change. The pictures are gorgeous, many of them are in color, and every other page contains an essay on various topics. The topics range from an influence on fashion, a particular designer, themes in collections, or a period of history. Included are also short timelines of the careers of designers from the last century. This book covers a wide range of topics, and gives the reader a comprehensive look at the past century in fashion. I would not recommend this book for someone who wants a chronological look at the development of fashion trends, because the articles skip from the thirties to the Victorian era to the twenties. It is interesting, colorful, and even educational.
A unique approach.......2000-07-18
This book takes a unique approach to the fashions of the past century. Arranged by theme and idea rather than chronologically, the book is a breath of fresh air in the realm of "fashion books". Each entry is written by someone with close knowledge of the subject, and so is more personal than a faceless editor. Overall, I thought the book was really interesting and a great read.

Well Designed Design Book!.......2007-09-21
As always, this is a beautifully put together book from Taschen. It has a lot of important information, but tends to be more on the short and concise side as opposed to numerous details. Also, the layout of the book can be frustrating at times, as it's in alphabetical order and not chronological. Which is interesting...
Another great Icons book.......2006-05-18
This little paperback certainly packs a lot in just 192 pages. There are so many designers to read histories on. And the photos of their designs are shown in their best light. Very inspiring.
A very good dictionary for designers.......2001-09-07
Whether you're an interior, industrial or other sort of designer, an architect, or simply a design conoisseur, this book will help answer almost all your questions about designers, design houses, movements, etc. In addition to this (definitions, biographies, etc.) you'll find an abundance of very good pictures that go with most of the entries, that illustrate them very well.
The only reason I give it four stars is because some topics it seems to cover with lots of detail (a good example is "Herman Miller") while others are left with a few lines. Yes: Herman Miller is a huge name in furniture design, but that doesn't make Gaudi, for example, any smaller.
Richly Illustrated.......2000-01-03
A richly illustrated encyclopedia of the most important names, objects and ideas in the history of 20th century design (graphic design, furniture, textile, glass, ceramics and metalware). Featured in its 780 pages are more than 400 one- or two-page articles on design-related styles, individuals, schools, companies and institutions, illustrated by over 700 full-color photographs. (Copyright © by Roy R. Behrens, from Ballast Quarterly Review, Vol 15 No 2, Winter 1999-2000.)
A century of design in your hands.......1999-12-27
This is an excellent reference book on 20th century design. It has over 700 color photographs and illustrations and is very well organized. The pocketbook size (5.5 x 7.5 in.) makes it very user friendly. The price point makes it a real bargain.
