4 out of 5 stars Good Book for a Study Guide.......2007-10-09

Some of the reviews for this book are far too harsh. I do agree that the first version of the book had numerous errors, but the second version corrected most of them. I used this book as my primary study guide for the 70-536 exam and I passed the exam easily. I considered using an alternative practice exam solution, but the software that came with the book was adequate, and in some instances, more difficult than the actual exam.

With that being said, I too agree that this book alone will (most likely) not enable you to pass the exam. This book is a *study guide*, not a *cheat sheet*. The goal of the book is to introduce you to exam topics and prepare you to solve exam problems using the .NET Framework App Foundation. This book is intended for candidates that have experience with previous or current versions of the Framework, who wish to condition that knowledge to pass an exam. The authors inform you of what level of skills you should have at the beginning of every chapter.

As with any technical book, it can use a little work. Chapter 9 'Installing Applications' should be considered for revision to flow better for the reader. But even with it's choppy flow, the information in chapter 9 is quite useful.

In summary; I read it, I passed, I'd recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars gr8.......2007-09-28

It's a gr8 product, the only setback was that Microsoft has just one book for VB as well as C# coders, so half of the book is useless for me

2 out of 5 stars Context Challenged.......2007-09-20

I am a Java programmer with no background in .Net, so I thought I would try to get certified as a way to learn the subject matter in a comprehensive manner. This book is not a good introduction to creating applications for Windows for a couple of reasons. First, much of the information in this book is badly out of context. For example, the first lab in Chapter 9 gives complete, detailed instructions on how to create a project in Microsoft Visual Studio. This lab would have been more useful as the first lab in the first chapter (obviously). In addition, many security related items are brought up in early chapters, but discussion of them is deferred to Chapter 11. Second, the book assumes familiarity with Windows concepts or products without explanation (which, in a "Foundation" book, I believe it shouldn't do). A discussion on remote components assumes a familiarity with IIS. I have finished chapters on Application Domains and Services and Installing and Configuring Applications and I still don't have a good idea of what a .dll file is, or how to actually create a componentized application.

That said, the book is not a total loss, it just requires considerable effort on the part of a novice to understand the information.

3 out of 5 stars Good enough to help me pass the test, about all.......2007-09-01

After reading this book cover to cover and taking the practice test many, many times I was able to pass the test on my first try.

What really pissed me off (along with my co-workers) is the amount of errors both in the book and the practice test. The book has so many typo's and errors the there is 2 (yea TWO) knowledge base articles for the errata. About 15% of the practice test questions (out of 300+) were just WRONG. Either the answers were not correct, or there were no correct answers.

Ok, enough of the rant. Like I said, this book did help me to pass the test, so for that I give it 3 stars. Had i failed the test it would have been more like 1 star.

Take that for what it is. Since this is the ONLY book for the test, you are kinda stuck... Just be ready for errors and frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but you need more -- This exam is not a breeze so please do not under estimate.......2007-08-25

First, I appeared for MCTS 70-529 (Distributed Applications) and I was able to clear in the very first attempt with 856 score -- not an easy one as it covers complex topics. Then I attempted MCTS 70-536 thinking that it is easier than 70-529. But definitely not an easy one either and I got a score of 771. It is voluminous and a beast as it covers lots of topics, right from types to code access security, collections, threading, interoperability, serialization, instrumentation, internationalization and more.

As you can imagine, a single book is not enough. You need to consult MSDN documentation heavily and frequently as most methods are overloaded with so many variations. And plus I suggest some other question bank (such as transcender, measure up, etc) in addition to the ones provided with the book. Question bank provided with book is good but not enough to cover all the tricks.

You can skip other question banks only if you are extremely .NET savvy. Which I suppose many people will not have exposure to so many topics in their careers does not matter with how many years of IT experience.

This exam is definitely not a breeze. So please prepare seriously if you intend to gain knowledge and pass this exam.

Book Description

Anyone still think that Adobe Photoshop Elements is a toy version of the real thing? As the most popular photo-editing program on the market, Photoshop Elements not only has Photoshop's marvelous powers, but also has capabilities the mothership lacks. Each new version includes more tools designed specifically for today's consumer digital photo enthusiasts. The latest edition, Photoshop Elements X, solidifies the reputation of this superb and inexpensive product with new scrapbook features, a link to online photo services, and many other improvements.

In fact, there's so much to Photoshop Elements that it can be quite confusing at times. That's precisely why our Missing Manuals are the bestselling books on the topic. Adobe provides a pamphlet and some help files; our book, now in its fourth edition, carefully explains every feature the program has to offer (something no other book has done) by putting each one into a clear, easy-to-understand context. Photoshop Elements X: The Missing Manual covers the Windows version of Adobe's workhorse and gives you the low down on a host of new features:

Author Barbara Brundage also introduces you to a new sophisticated tool called "Curves" to adjust the color and contrast in your photos, and shows you how to burn multi-session CDs and DVDs. As always, she lets you know which features work well, which don't, and why -- all with a bit of wit and good humor. Although the book progresses from simple to complex tasks, you can easily jump around to learn specific techniques, such as creating photomontages (composites), restoring old photos, preparing images for the Web, and archiving. More than a dozen downloadable images let you practice using the editing tools right away!

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and clear.......2007-10-11

I never take the methodical approach to learning anything. After installing Elements 5, I sat down with The Missing Manual and a few photos and began editing. It was fairly easy to consult the index and then read the pages necessary to change my photos. I skipped around the book from back to front and in between. The resulting photos were surprisingly good.

I'm not recommending this learning process, but if you want to just jump off the deep end and begin editing, it is doable. When time permits, an organized and careful reading will no doubt produce even better photographic results. In the meantime, I find reading a few pages and just experimenting with my pictures is a lot of fun.

Two important things to remember: Don't be intimidated by the size of this manual. It contains everything you wanted to know and a lot of stuff you don't want to know. Skip the latter. Next, always make a copy of your original photo and edit the copy. This way, you can be fearless in your experimenting always knowing that the original is unharmed and ready to supply endless copies for you to play with.

The complaint I have about The Missing Manual is the quality of the photo-examples printed in the book. Not the fault of the author. The printing quality is just very, very poor. The book would have earned 5-stars from me were it not for the paper/print quality.

5 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 5.0 The Missing Manual.......2007-09-29

This is a must have. Covers everything the other manuals miss, and gives pertinent information others miss. Well written, easily followed and understood. Pick a topic and go, or read it from front to back.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, but needs more step by step instructions........2007-09-24

Lots of information but some of it assumes you already know how to use it. Can get to what you want to do with some digging.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference for Elements users.......2007-09-20

I did quite a bit of research on Elements 5.0 books, and I ended up choosing this one because of the great reviews it had gotten. Excellent choice! The book is very easy to understand, and I can't imagine tackling Elements 5.0 without it. It gave me the good start I needed in understanding and effectively using the software. Barbara Brundage is an excellent author. She's great at writing in a way that gives you the info you need while avoiding the techno-speak that many software developers use. If you have Elements 5.0 and need a good reference....or a good way to start using the software...this is your book.

4 out of 5 stars DIGITAL INTEGRATED CIRCUITS.......2007-08-01

It's a great book,I studied with it during the semester, and it covered all the topics i needed.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for fundamentals/reference.......2007-03-06

I used the first edition of this book in my graduate class. I found the book well-written with good examples and explanations. It also covers a diverse range of subjects and I still find myself referring to it when I have doubts. If you are having problems with understanding fundamentals, I highly recommend this book as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "text"book to start Digial IC Design .........2006-12-17

I had this book for both my Undergraduate and graduate level VLSI Design classes. I cant think of other book that would make a perfect course textbook to learn 'Digital' Integrated Circuit (DIC) design. The book starts with device concepts to give you a good understanding the physics behind CMOS technology. Then it introduces the basics of CMOS circuits (inverter analysis) and covers the aspects of digital integrated design such as parastic analysis, logic families, memories, timing and complex architectures etc... The real world design, challenges and technologies are also given in the book through articles, discussions, problems and examples. It gives a good background and teaches the concepts so a designer would be able to choose a correct design paramaters, logic/arch. family and targets such as power/performance/noise/area.

The book does not go deep in to each subject since its intention is intro/intermediate. Also this book is not for serious circuit designers but its a start book to make one. Its the book to learn and broaden your knowledge on designing custom and high performace circuits.. The cons of this book would be that its not a user friendly at the beginning for a fresh starter but it will welcome and get you going pretty quick once you get the style of the author. I would recommend the Uyemura's book (CMOS Logic Design) for uncovered and extra examples to complete this book. And if you are looking more to designing complex high performance circuits, Chandrakasan's book (Design of High-Performance Microprocessor Circuits) would be the one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Electrical Engineers.......2006-03-29

Great book as it is very clear, methodical, and gives great examples in which you can actually follow unlike some others. I would also recommend going through the problem sets from the authors website online as it really helps solidify the concepts taught in this book. This book is highly recommended for budding VLSI designers or engineers who just want to learn a little bit about VLSI design!

3 out of 5 stars Ok for transistor level ..........2006-01-28

Has some good information at the transistor level. However, the book falls apart after the first time you open it. I returned my first copy and got a brand new one, but same thing happened. The back of the book cracks and pages fall out as soon as you start flipping through the thing. Highly overpriced, as most books of this type are!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Advanced as you would Think.......2006-10-03

I purchased this book along with "Circuit Design with VHDL" by Pedroni. The Pedroni book was supposed to help me with syntax issues and general knowledge of vhdl while I wanted this book to learn some more advanced techniques. I found the two books very similar in level of difficulty. Chapter 8 on the Design of Fast Arithmetic Units and the section in Chapter 5 about designing an LCD controler are about the only advanced topics in this book that teach you how to design in VHDL. The section on implementing a RISC Thumb processor is more of an arichitecture lesson than how to implement it in VHDL on a FPGA. This book is more of an intermediate book than an advanced one. This is a good book don't get me wrong its just not as advanced as I would have liked.

4 out of 5 stars using a finite state machine.......2005-06-20

Perhaps the key idea here might be the use or implementation of state machines in the design of the circuits. For the level of complexity and the number of transistors in a typical chip, you need some systematic means of disciplining the design.

While some readers might readily find other aspects of the book to be more pertinent, to me the paradigm of a finite state machine seems the most fruitful.

Book Description

Intelligent seonsors are revolutionizing the world of system design in everything from sports cars to assembly lines. These new sensors have abilities that leave their predecessors in the dust! They not only measure parameters efficiently and precisely, but they also have the ability to enhance and interupt those measurements, thereby transformng raw data into truly useful information.

Unlike many embedded systems books that confine themselves strictly to firmware and software, this book also delves into the supporting electronic hardware, providing the reader with a complete understanding of the issues involved when interfacing to specific types of sensor and offering insight into the real-world problems designers will face. Meaningful software examples are implemented in both C and assembly language, and the source code is included on the accompanying CD. The examples provide a complete, easily extensible code framework for sensor-based applications as well as basic support routines that are often ignored or treated superficially. The goal throughout is to make readers truly productive as quickly as possible while providing the thorough understanding necessary to design robust systems.

Readers will gain in-depth, real-world design information that will help them be more productive and get up to speed on sensor design skills more quickly. The book provides designers and students a leg up in a relatively new design area, imparting knowledge about a new microcontroller that offers some of the functionality of a DSP chip.

· Quickly teaches the reader to design the new wave in sensor technology, "intelligent" sensors

· In-depth design techniques, real-world examples, detailed figures and usable code

· Application chapters thoroughly exploring temperature, pressure and load, and flow sensors

· A FREE CD that provides a toolkit of software models in both C and assembly language

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars dsPIC.......2007-05-13

This is an introductory text on making sensors "intelligent". It meets that need well.

This book is not a text on DSP. If you need a text book on DSP, get a DSP text book.

This is not a text on PIC microcontrollers. There are several from introductory to advanced in print.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for the dsPIC Enthusiast Interested in Intelligent Sensor Design.......2007-01-13

This is an Excellent Book for the dsPIC Enthusiast Interested in Intelligent Sensor Design. The book really does deserve 5 stars. The reason I rated the book 4 stars is that there are a few errors that, once corrected will go a long way to a 5 star rating.

I sometimes get frustrated with an author that makes errors. This book is not riddled with errors like some I've read. In this case, the errors are forgivable as it is obvious that they were made in the effort to get this book to print. The first error has to do with the Nyquist theorem. The author states, "As one can easily see, a problem arises when the highest frequency component in the original signal is greater than twice the sampling frequency, a sample rate known as the Nyquist rate." Opps; the maximum frequency in an analog signal, f1, is often referred to as the `Nyqust frequency'. The minimum sampling rate (2 *f1 samples per second) at which a signal can be recovered is known as the `Nyquist rate'. The `folding frequency', which is one-half the sampling frequency used, is the highest frequency which can be recovered according to the Sampling Theorem (See Lynn and Fuerst, "Introductory to Digital Signal Processing, 2nd ed., p11). Hence, I believe the author meant to say, "As one can easily see, a problem arises when the highest frequency component in the original signal is greater than one-half the sampling frequency, a sample rate known as the Nyquist rate." The other factual error I found was stating that the dsPICDEM Demo board has a temperature sensor with SPI. The board I believe the author is referring to (dsPICDEM 1.1) has a TC1047A which is an analog sensor, not SPI. Neither error is worth rating a book lower, I just wanted to point out two errors that may, at first, puzzle a reader.

So, why is the book excellent? After reading the book, I believe it is fair to say Creed Huddleston is an experienced embedded veteran with a disciplined code style. Creed has mastered the dsPIC and can teach you a lot about using the dsPIC in intelligent sensor designs. That is, if you have an open mind, take the time to read and use the code on included CD, you will learn a lot. The code in the book is very well organized. You will need access to 1) Microchip's C30 GNU C compiler (a free student version is available); 2) the dsPIC Digital filter software (a lite version is available at a modest cost), 3) MPLAB (Free download from Microchip); 4) The dsPICDEM 1.1 demo board (unless you have the time to build your own circuit or adapt the code to another); 5) Time to build an interface circuit to the sensor of your choice. Creed takes you though the rational for intelligent sensors in the early part of the book, though a brief introduction to DSP (this is NOT a DSP tutorial book), though a brief introduction the dsPIC architecture, and finally to sensor interface by example of three projects; a temperature sensor, pressure and load sensors, and flow sensors.

In the latter half of the book, you are introduced to a dsPIC `toolkit', created by the author organized in a framework that you can use in your own projects. The beginning dsPIC developer or an intermediate developer would most likely benefit from learning from the code style, rational behind the code organization, and examples the author demonstrates. The framework is state machine driven using a simplistic approach and is not a UML diagram-based. That is, the style is common sense and low-key to allow the reader to understand the intelligent sensor concept, not software design theory.

The chapters are:
1. What Are Intelligent Sensors, and Why Should I Care about Them?
2. Intuitive Digital Signal Processing
3. Underneath the Hood of the dsPIC DSC
4. Learning to be a Good Communicator
5. A Basic Toolkit for the dsPIC DSC
6. Sensor Application - Temperature Sensor
7. Sensor Application - Pressure and Load Sensors
8. Sensor Application - Flow Sensors
9. Where are We Headed?
10. Appendix A: Software on the Included CD-ROM
11. Appendix B: Initialization of the dsPIC DSC and the System Start-up Code
12. Appendix C: Buffered, Interrupt-driven Serial I/O

I am very Satisified. The DVD included with the book is a real asset.

4 out of 5 stars Insert Pithy Title Here.......2007-10-11

I'll start off by saying that it wasn't actually my choice to get this book, it was the required book for the digital photography class I am enrolled in at the moment.

However, that aside, I am quite glad i did get the book as it is a fabulous manual for the most recent version of Photoshop (CS3). The highly instructive tutorials cover pretty much everything you would want to use photoshop on your photos for (and even some that might not have occured to you). The tutorials are mostly pretty easy to follow, though it get a bit complicated on some of the more lengthy procedures, and the provided DVD hold not only a few nice video guides to certain parts of photoshop, but also almost all of the pictures used in the tutorials in the book, so it becomes a good deal easier to compare results, and make sure you've done it right. Also the book is very well indexed, so if you're looking for something in particular, it doesnt take too long to find at all

i don't usually go for instructional books, but this one is thorough and very well done
i'd deffinately recommend it

4 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS3 for Photographers.......2007-09-29

This book is very big in size and has ample amount of information for the user. We are using it in our Photography class for Photoshop training but there is a CD that anyone could use without a class.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehesive and Informative.......2007-09-26

This is not for beginner. Mainly it aims at the seasoned PS users. I have owned Mr. Evening book since CS2 and found it very useful as a reference materials. The shortcuts and tricks are embedded in the text; as a result, you have to really read the book to garner the info. There are other books which give you tips & tricks. Just consider this book is a reference material.

Digital compositing, defined here as "the digitally manipulated combination of at least two source images to produce an integrated result," is a huge field incorporating 2-D and 3-D still and animated artwork. The Art and Science of Digital Compositing homes in on a specific area--visual effects in film, multimedia, and commercials--and expands on it in a highly precise and technical fashion. The author, Ron Brinkmann, has applied his expertise to many projects, including such feature films as James and the Giant Peach and Die Hard.

Here he teaches aspiring film, video, and multimedia artists how to create mattes; manipulate time; track, view, and analyze images; work with various film and video formats; and understand the issues of quality versus efficiency. Brinkmann concentrates on improving what you've put together by manipulating color, brightness, perspective, lighting, cameras, and more. You can apply much of the introductory information--resolution, bit depth, compression, color, and geometric manipulations--to simple image-compositing projects. But then you're off into Hollywood territory, though the tone is one of serious insight, not whimsical observation. This is essentially a textbook for people who are looking for an in-depth discussion of technology for advanced animation production. As such, it does an excellent job. --Kathleen Caster

Book Description

Computer-generated visual effects are now used extensively in feature films, commercials, music videos, and multimedia. The backbone of this process, the final and most important step, is known as digital compositing. The Art and Science of Digital Compositing is a comprehensive reference that provides a complete overview of the technical and the artistic nature of this process. This book covers a wide range of topics from basic image creation, representation, and manipulation, to a look at the visual cues that are necessary to create a believable composite. Designed as both an introduction to the field as well as a valuable technical reference, this book should be of interest to both novices and professionals alike.

Written by a working professional in the visual effects industry, the book provides over 250 different images and illustrations (including a 40-page color insert) as well as a complete glossary of compositing and visual-effects terminology. Also included are in-depth case studies from well-known films such as Speed, Independence Day, and Titanic.

Balances fundamental "hard science" topics with the more qualitative/artistic challenges which face anyone involved in a digital composition project
Provides examples and illustrations from motion picture work
CD-ROM contains additional composition examples, illustrations, and development software
Includes 32 pages of colour

5 out of 5 stars A must.......2007-06-13

Even if I'm not working in vfx, so I haven't a great experience, I think this book should be in every comps shelf: very simple, well written, it deals with the math under every (even the simplest) operation you can do in your compositing package (it's quite software-indipendent). It explains several wonderful tricks too.
Globally, very useful in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars An essentrial for all CG artist.......2007-02-24

Ron goes over the very concepts of compositing that are essential to know in the computer graphics feild. I have bought several copies of this book as the disappear from my desk (no longer kept in public view)

4 out of 5 stars Great Book but Where's the CD?.......2007-01-23

This book is exceptional and a must for anyone pursuing this area of interest. The only disappointment I had in purchasing this item is that it is supposed to come with a CD, and the CD was never shipped to me. What's up, Amazon?

5 out of 5 stars A math mad must for Comps.......2007-01-05

That can I say about Mr Brinkman. Well he's one of the God's of compositing and VFX. Mad about the math behind Node based compositing software, which incidentally is a good thing. This is not meant to be a 'Shake' bible as it is supposed to be non software specific. However it uses 'Shake' language and node naming. This is not a criticism as 'Shake' is the meccano kit of compositing. Understand the mode and the math behind it and you can do anything. I would also assume that this will still be relevant when shake is 'reborn'.

This is also essential for other composing software where the math is hidden. If you've ever considered what happens inside that 'magic button' after you've clicked.

I also think that Steve Wright's 'Digital Compositing for Film and Video, Second Edition' is a must too. Another great book from a great man of VFX.

Having not been personally taught by Mr. Brinkman and Mr Wright these books prove to be the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for compositors and digital artists.......2006-07-02

This book is a in depth study of the techniques and technologies involved in the art of compositing. Not sooo technical that no one will understand it, but technical enough that it even explains in detail the algorithms and math used for antialiasing, blurs, the transfer operators like multiply, screen overlay., etc... I am a professional cg artist and highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Product walkthrough.......2007-07-05

This is a well written book, however talks less about workflow and more about Lightroom. if you are new to light room I highly recommend this book as it is a great introduction to the product and a walkthrough on all of it's features 1.0 (does not cover 1.1).

If you are looking for workflow and already know lightroom.... this book will teach you a few things you didn't know. I suggest taking a look at your local book store first to see if it is right for you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to using Lightroom.......2007-05-29

Most folks who've been around digital imaging for any length of time know Tim Grey. An engaging, energy-filled, computer whiz who used to teach for George Lepp at the Lepp Institute of Digital Imaging and then got hired by Microsoft to head their professional photo expansion effort, Tim has a rare talent for clear, insightful writing about complex subjects. He's parlayed that skill into a whole series of books, of which this is one of his latest, and it carries on the tradition of being very thorough and easy to read and understand.

The topic of this book is one of a new breed of image editing tools that takes a fundamentally different approach to working with digital photo files from the King Kong of the industry, Adobe Photoshop. While Photoshop still is the industry leader by far, it has several serious drawbacks, including expense, complexity, and a very steep learning curve.

Enter Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. The concept for this new tool is to provide a more user friendly, efficient end-to-end workflow within one program that includes editing, optimizing, cataloguing, and output, allowing the photographer to spend less time in front of the computer and more time actually taking pictures. There are competing programs from other companies with a similar goal - Apple's Aperture (strictly for Macs), and LightZone from Light Crafts (for both platforms), but only Lightroom has near-seamless cross compatibility with Adobe's other creative products.

Lightroom has strong promise. One of its leading attributes is that it works nondestructively. When you make editing changes to images you are not altering actual pixel values within the image file but only adding a set of instructions for changes you wish to make and shows those effects on the fly. This makes files much smaller than when you create multiple variations in Photoshop, many times with many layers resulting in huge files. Many of its tools are both clever and intuitive as well, speeding the way to a polished product in less time.

There are some limitations however. While image adjustments are well mechanized, there is no provision in this version of the program to apply them selectively to parts of the image. For this type of work the file must be exported to another editing program. Also, there is no means for working on more than one monitor. A favorite approach for many who use Photoshop is to use two displays with the image on one and the palettes for various adjustments on the other; can't do that at this point with Lightroom.

Will Lightroom catch on? Very likely, especially for those photographers who yearn for a tool that gives good, quick results that increase their productivity. And when the global adjustments available within Lightroom aren't enough, it's easy to export to another tool for that kind of work. In addition, the simple digital asset management capabilities may be enough for someone whose file storage and cataloguing needs aren't too great. Furthermore, this is version 1.0, and there is every expectation that the program will grow and improve as the new conceptual paradigm gains acceptance, particularly with serious competition from at least two other quadrants.

So, how valuable is Tim Grey's take on the subject? About as good as it gets, I'd say. Tim has a rare talent for clarity of expression that leaves little doubt about what's being described. Throughout his books he makes suggestions about settings and states his personal preferences so someone new to the program has a place to start, which is far preferable, in my view, to just describing all the choices and leaving one hanging without a clue where to begin. If you purchase Lightroom, or are even just considering doing so, you should also acquire this book. It will save hours and hours of figuring it all out on your own and give you a running start toward becoming an expert with one of the best new editing programs.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Grey's Lightroom book.......2007-05-24

Tim's effort is a noteworthy in clarity of writing style. Realistic workflow approach and sequencing in this book makes Lightroom's use far more understandable. Tech-writing of technical subject-matter always is a difficult job. Tim does it exceptionally well. Oddly, Tim's book... is the very material that - should - be included within Adobe's $300 product under the "Help" menu. User tips picked up from the book make it a worthwhile purchase. LR itself... the jury is still out on that issue. Noteworthy features, but quirky Raw conversions and exposure values and color balance readings. A product that attempts to be the proverbial "Swiss Army Knife" with the inclusion of many many functions... the number count tends to overload the user, even get in the way.

4 out of 5 stars Great visual guide.......2007-05-17

There are so many Lightroom books available but I waited for Tim's because of his writing style. He's a technical guy who can also make us "visual" people understand.

5 out of 5 stars Lightroom Workflow.......2007-05-13

A great book! Easy to read and helps make sense of Adobes new product. Tim Grey is one of the most knowledgeable experts on Lightroom and other
Adobe products for photographers. This bood will be an ongoing source of reference as I work in Lightroom. I would highly recommend it to anyone starting in Lightroom.

4 out of 5 stars Photoshop follow directions and try it........2007-09-14

This book I am using with a class I am taking. The instructions take a few chapters to get used to the writers style. The author covers a lot of good things that are very useful in photography as well as graphics. The only thing is the guy just can't take very good photos, but you can fix that, learn the basics from this book and take your'e own photo's! There is a lot to learn in this book to adapt to your own style! Go for it!!!

5 out of 5 stars The why of Photoshop.......2007-05-04

As a web designer whose strength is in coding and scripting, Photoshop has always seemed to be a cauldron of black magic to me. The knowledgible knew how to coax results from the tempermental pot, but we newbies were most likely to get burned. While Photoshop's unfriendly, counter-intuitive environment is partly to blame, a host of "follow this list of steps to make a button/background/fancy text/whatever without learning why these steps are necessary" tutorials - both on the web and in books - also share some of the responsibility.

Thankfully, McClelland's book more than makes up for the lax presentations of scores of wannabe Photoshop authors.

To get right to the point, One-on-One is an exercise in describing the why of Photoshop. While the book is filled with tutorials (a few per chapter), they all fit into a shared context. McClelland doesn't just tell the reader to slavishly follow his steps, but WHY they're necessary and WHY they work. He teaches the reader how to read a color historgram, why relying on Photoshop's auto image adjustment tools are only the first step in editing an image, even rudimentary color theory. I honestly learned more by reading the first chapter in this book then by struggling through a host of inane tutorials.

In short, One-on-One does it right. It's a must-have for any potential Photoshop user.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly useful.......2007-03-31

After a few unsatisfactory experiences, I was quite ready to admit the art of photography mending is beyond my capacities, and Deke McClelland's "Adobe Photoshop CS2" was in a way some "ultimate try" at the subject. After reading this book, I am aware of the fact I still have a lot to learn, but I am now confident I can reach some satisfactory level in using the powerful software Photoshop is.
In its step-by-step manner, this book is a masterpiece of pedagogy. The teaching, precise as well as relevant, is lavishly accompanied by superior illustrations. Without ever being overwhelmingly patronizing, it goes when necessary into precious details, all the time making sure the reader is able not only of acting the right way, but also of understanding why it is the right way.
If you are in need of learning how to use Photoshop CS2, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Value for money.......2007-03-13

I found the book a good source of step by step learning. It takes you through beginner to full user. You can move at your own pace. I found the book easy to follow, as it is written in conversational style. It most certainly is good value for money. I recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Sub-Par for SLR Photographers.......2007-03-11

If you're looking for a book with painfully drawn out explinations and unispiring pictures, this book is for you; otherwise, head elsewhere. If you need to learn the basics of photoshop for non-photography needs, or want to learn how to add layout and text to your projects, this book would suffice. For photographers who want to learn how to use photoshop to manage, edit and manipulate their SLR captured pictures, this ISN'T the book for you. The projects are drawn out, cumbersome and uninspiring. Topics such as layers and masks aren't covered until 2/3 through the book! I would recommend the How to Wow series over this book - How to Wow is conscience, informative and conveys information quickly vs. the verbose manner which Deke seems to favor.....
