4 out of 5 stars knitting on the edge.......2007-10-09

The author wanted to make a single source that collected all her edgings and the book is simply a collection of 350 patterns on edges. The chapters are; ribs, ruffles, lace, fringes, flora, and points and picots. There are some finished designs in the book that I don't believe that anyone would knit, they are simply not fitted, but she definitely fulfils her edge-aim. At first I was pretty bored when looking in the book. Then I realized that I was thinking about several different knits I would like to do, being inspired by the edgings in the book... Therefore, I believe this is is a book for anyone who likes to make own designs and who wants new inspiration to make edges that adds something to the knits. I haven't looked into her other two books on edgings, so I don't know if or how they add to each other.

Great book!
Well written, well described, really nice ideas.
Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Knitting on the Edge: Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Floral, Points & Picots: The Essential Collection of 350 Decorateive Borders.......2007-02-06

It's OK. I bought it, but could have lived without it. The sections include: Introduction, Texture, Size, Notes, Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Flora, Points & Picots, Patterns, Stitches, Abbreviations, Techniques, Acknowledgments, & Recourses.

This is an excellent book for beginner or intermediate knitters. Experienced knitters would have already used many of these ideas in their self-designed knitted project. It's a nice reference book for them.

2 out of 5 stars Where are the corrections????.......2006-12-18

There are many mistakes in this book...and it is poorly written. Patterns should be more clear. One person stated she couldn't find any errors...well I beg to differ with you, so far every pattern I've started has errors and have not been able to complete either project because of them. what is up with P1 P5...????? why not p6????? I do not understand that and have never seen it before....crazy

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring book to use as a springboard for your knitting imagination.......2006-12-09

After much deliberation, I decided to buy the three Nicky Epstein books in this series (On the Edge, Over the Edge, Beyond the Edge). Each of these books are just gorgeous, filled with color illustrations of each border or design on glossy pages. In essence, I'll be reviewing all three of the books together, but focusing on this one since I'm currently doing a border from it.

While I'd heard of Nicky Epstein (if you're into knitting, I don't see how you couldn't!), I waited about a year before buying her books, and I'm glad I did. I needed the time to become a better knitter. I consider myself an advanced beginner or an intermediate knitter, and I don't think these are books for beginners. For one thing, they're not meant to be pattern books. There are very few patterns included in them (and the ones that are there are pretty scary looking! When I was first learning to knit I would have given up, because they're very complex-looking). The author assumes that her audience would know how to do some of the more advanced stitches used in her border patterns, and that they would also have some experience under their belt to figure out how to use her borders in bigger projects like sweaters or blankets or whatever.

That being said, I'm taking a star off because it's really hard to find errata for this book on the internet. I had to do some searching before I found a scant two or three corrections on the Vogue Knitting website. I spent two days working and reworking a specific border (the Serendipity, p.83) before I realized that the numbers the author had listed for how many stitches the pattern worked over were wrong. As I continued in the pattern, I found other number errors in it. When I looked for corrections, I couldn't find any for that specific pattern. Since I know this book has been out for a while, I would hope that all the pattern errors would have been worked out in later printings. Other than that, a great book and totally worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented.......2007-07-26

The book is beautifully presented with exceptional diagrams and step by step instructions. There are many different varieties of flowers not found in other books, exotic orchics and beautiful butterflies. I love it.

I received my book very quickly, Amazon kept me informed via email that the order was received and when the book was sent. Great service.

5 out of 5 stars And then there were three - or not .......2007-02-04

I've had Kelly's first book (as a section of a larger beading book) for a while and have had great fun with it. The flowers in this second book are just as beautiful. The instructions are clear and relatively easy to follow. I've already done a couple of the projects and they've turned out well.

Now for the caution flag. Kelly's first book is titled 'French-Beaded Flowers: New Millennium Collection'. This second book is titled 'More French Beaded Flowers: 38 Patterns for Blossoms, Leaves, Bugs & More'.

However, there is another Kelly book that you may see, titled 'French Beaded Flowers'. Be aware that this seemingly THIRD Kelly book is the UK's version of the second book. The only differences between the two books are the cover, the longer title and the publisher. The project content is exactly the same. Judging from the dates of the reviews written for the UK version, it seems to have been published first. Maybe the publishers of the U.S. version decided to add the word 'MORE' to the title just to be different. Or maybe it was some type of legal thing. The one thing it IS, is confusing to the consumer.

So, please don't be fooled by the cover, like I was and buy both of them. As far as I know, there are only two books by Dalene Kelly on French Beaded Flowers, not three.

5 out of 5 stars Bead-Dazzling Garden of Flowers!.......2006-03-02

I've been working with beads for many years, and creating french beaded flowers for at least 20 years, and I STILL was very impressed with this book (which isn't easy to do!) The instructions are clear and the designs are wonderful! It's hard to say if a beginner would view it the same since I have been working with this art form for so long, but I believe it would be an excellent instructional guide, and a fantastic addition to every beading artist & hobbyist's library.

5 out of 5 stars This book will keep you pleasantly occupied for a while.......2005-09-26

I bought Dalene's first French Beaded Flowers book and used it extensively. I was happy to add the second one to my collection. It is a very project-based book like the first one. I have made a number of the flowers already. The instructions are clear and concise. A good book for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Stop and bead the flowers!.......2004-04-19

Dalene's second book of French Beaded Flowers is a welcome addition to her first. I've already made several of the flowers! Her instructions are clear, and the flowers are just beautiful. Good work, Dalene!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Floral Stitches.......2007-10-02

I have many embroidery books and this is the best so far.

It is the most detailed I have seen and it includes not only great
visual step by step illustrations but information on how to design
stitch layouts for a flower you may have in your own garden.

Examples of both thread and ribbon uses are shown as well as
information on fabric and color choices (color wheel included).
It's a great book for those who have some experience in basic embroidery.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-05-30

I have seen this book and can't wait to get my hands on one of my own. Just waiting for one at the right price. It is even better than Elegant Stitches and is in COLOUR. recommend

5 out of 5 stars Visually delightful, mentally informative.......2006-02-26

"Floral Stitches" is one of the most lovely books I own. It is actually a work of art, containing soothing, pleasing, delightful, and concise, informative, and inspirational content. The stitches are well- illustrated, and useful, and Montano provides exact information from an artist's eye on how to create work with depth. You will be delighted with it! Its small enough to go into my stitching tote, and I carry it everywhere I stitch. Eye-appealing! YOu can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!.......2003-02-18

If you love Victorian Stiches then this is the book for you. Clearly illustrates dozens of embroidery stitches.

Great Book.

4 out of 5 stars For the experienced embroiderer.......2002-11-14

This book is beautiful to thumb through. It makes you long for a gentler time when people made more effort to embellish their things. There are some wonderful ideas with good illustrations and diagrams. This is not a good book if you are just starting to explore the world of embroidery but if you are a seasoned embroiderer, this is a lovely treasure to add to you library.

Book Description

“Trish Burr has painstakingly recreated blooms from the paintings of 19th century botanical artist Pierre Joseph Redoute in exquisite embroidery. Using only the simplest stitches, she provides instructions, illustrations and photo- graphs to take you step-by-step through stitching 17 beautiful buds—roses, lilies, birds of paradise, dahlias, magnolias and more. A gorgeous gift for anyone with a passion for flowers or needlework.”—Vogue Patterns.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Acceptable to some?.......2007-07-16

I have found this book to be a disappointment, but only because I already own Trish Burr's Long & Short Stitch Flowers. The text is basically a copy of Long & Short Stitch and the embroidery appears to be not as refined. No need to own both.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed instructions, beautiful patterns.......2006-08-31

Although you can't "Look Inside" this book at Amazon (currently, anyhow), the cover is exactly representative of the projects inside. This is no encyclopedia of a billion stitches, but a book focused tightly upon reproducing Redoute's beautiful botanical prints in "thread painting."

There were several things about this book that stood out for me:

Not the Kitchen Sink
--------------------
Trish Burr wisely restricts herself to a relatively few stitches: long-and-short, satin, stem, split, bullion knot, French knot, and perhaps a couple more. They are presented clearly, in diagrams and words (and photos in some cases), and followed by a small sampler. Then come the Redoute projects...

Clear Presentation
------------------
Each flower (there are 17) is presented in the same format:
- First, a large-scale photograph of the stitched piece, along with a list of needles and other materials.
- Then, three line drawings: one for the pattern outlines, one to define which areas are padded or detailed, and one to show color placement.
- Another, smaller photograph on the same page spread as the diagrams
- A verbal explanation gives details on stitching each part of the flower: which stitches, in what order, how many strands.

Ms. Burr writes in her Introduction that she aims for clear illustrations and good explanations, and she has achieved her target admirably. Although the format as I've described it may sound repetitive, I found it refreshing not to have to flip back and forth between pages, searching for color keys or stitch info--and equally refreshing not to have all the directions crammed into one cryptic diagram. (Anyone who has ever struggled to decode the projects in "A to Z of Ribbon Embroidery", for instance, knows what I mean. Sumptuous photos of the projects, but figuring out how to reproduce them is murder.)

Unusual Selection of Subjects
-----------------------------
It's easy to find embroidery books on English flowers, and many of them are truly gorgeous (Helen Stevens' Masterclass series comes to mind), but if you're looking for something different, something... well, something French!, this may be just the thing for you. Instead of pinks and cornflowers and foxgloves, here are lilies and iris and camellias and magnolias. Roses, morning-glories, and a few exotics like amaryllis, bird-of-paradise, and poppy are also represented. Again, the cover illustration gives a good idea of what you'll find inside. It ain't no cottage garden!

Achievable
----------
All projects are stitched using easily available DMC embroidery floss. None of the stitches are jazzy or difficult. The instructions are so clear that even a relative novice should be able to achieve exciting results. (Again, Helen Stevens comes to mind, but alas, as a counterexample. I love looking at her books, but they have never given me the slightest bit of confidence that I could do work like that.)

=============

All in all, an excellent book, well worth the money. Bravo, Ms. Burr!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; Honors Redoute Well, Easy to Use.......2003-12-01

The book provides all of the information anyone would need to teach themselves to embroider at home. The results are terrific. The author has done a superb job of recreating Redoute's elegant flower portraits. There is a great deal of value packed into this small book. Worth the price

5 out of 5 stars Redoute's Finest Flowers in Embroidery.......2002-11-26

I bought this sight unseen which is unlike me but this surely would cause me to try that again !!! It is a needlework book of a higher level. By that I mean the novice and the expert can do it; only skill improves the work appearance. It is fully creative embroidery. I am making all 17 project designs and developing them into a moire quilt or cushions. The designs are smallish (5" or so ) but can then be incorporated into whatever your heart desires. They are very fast to do with any fabric of your choice for any textile idea you might hae in botanicals.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-07-07

Until now my only stitching has been Cross Stitch, but
having seen this publication it just makes me want to try to re-create just a fraction of the wonderful work Trish Burr has put into this book.

She makes it seem so easy, which I am sure it is not; it is
all very well explained, colourful, easy to follow and anyone
interested in stitching should have a copy.

My recommendation to all those stitchers out there "Buy a copy".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of Verneuil.......2007-02-28

This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.

5 out of 5 stars Good designs.......2006-11-05

If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions.......2006-06-07

I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Art professional point of view .......2006-03-21

This book helps me in my work big time. I'm free freelance artist and right now I'm working on my next big project in Art Nouveau style and I can not imagine my work without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sit down before you open this one.......2006-01-14

Dover Publications is the friend of anyone with nearly any sort of interest (and not much money). If you're interested in the ways and means of New Art, get this one.

M. Verneuil clearly would have liked the Dover editors. LIke them, he had his wide-ranging interests, in his case in botany, Japanese design, and decorative arts (to judge by his booklist).

This book is a feast that shifts back and forth from stylization and abstraction on one hand to close observation of natural plant forms on the other. One two-page spread (plates 62 & 63) in particular juxtaposes both this reduction into pattern and the accuracy of his eye.

These are the crown imperial and the German iris from Verneuil's Etude de la plante. Side views of each plant give you the random visual complexity of the original -- almost scruffy leaves, in the crown imperial's case. Both set forth the visually overwhelming detail of the blossoms. But, at the bottom of both plates are plan views of a blossom, simple, regular and compelling as a Japanese mon.

If the rest of Verneuil's plant book is this good, I'm hoping Dover reprints the whole thing one day.

When Verneuil moves to greater depths (or is it heights?) of abstraction, the results are often stunning. Don't miss plate 27, an overall pattern of maidenhair fern in shades of orange, or plate 28, a tiled pattern of wild iris in rippling water.

It's interesting to compare the sunflowers in plate 79, apparently a detail from a running line of tiles, with the one in plate 59 from Etude de la plante. The latter captures the petals in wild abandon, the leaves in their rough, almost papery reality. The former flattens and regularizes each leaf, and views the flowers head-on, giving us a literal sunburst of shape and color in complex but regular pattern.

Throughout, M. Verneuil brings a solid color sense, now playing with shades of neighboring hues, now with contrasting hues. Each one seems absolutely right.

You can't open this book to any page without feeling that the mind and eye that originated it were pretty special. It's more than likely that some of this impression is due to the care of Carol Belanger Grafton, who selected and arranged the plates -- many of the two-page spreads seem to delight in comparing, or mirroring, or contrasting Verneuil's designs.

If you like art nouveau, you'll want this book.

5 out of 5 stars Projects not limited to quilts.......2004-03-05

The floral quilt projects comprising A Floral Affair come from the pages of "Quilts Japan" magazine: as such, Japanese quiltmakers share their vision and workmanship with a distinctly oriental flair. 12 selected projects feature floral designs, a range of piecing and applique techniques, and projects which will appeal to all levels. Both standard and US metric measurements accompany projects not limited to quilts, but including cosmetic bags, pillows and more.

Book Description

In Quilting In The Morning Calm: Floral Delights from Ancient Korea, Shirley MacGregor and Sheila Steers turn a quilter's eye to Korea's ancient Chosun Dynasty, and to the works of Sim Saimdang. Born in the early 1500's this very talented woman quietly sidestepped the harsh restrictions of the times to express her artistic gifts through embroidery, calligraphy, poetry and painting. She painted simple but elegant representations of plants and insects on decorative screens to grace her family's living quarters. Now, almost 500 years have passed and we discover that her paintings are wonderfully suited to appliqué.

Here an international group of quilt artists interpret seven of these beautiful paintings in cloth. We invite you to join them in celebrating the spirit of one of Korea's most notable women.

The book features 17 beautiful quilts by quilt artists from the US, Canada, Korea, the UK & New Zealand

Full-size tear-out patterns for each design Authentic designs found in the art and archetecture of ancient Korea

Biographical information on participating quilters, and comments on their work

Cultural notes on Korea and the life of Sim Saimdang

5 out of 5 stars Korea quilted.......2003-04-12

For a number of years, Shirley MacGregor has been bringing us the beauties of the Far East rendered as quilts through her "Manhole Cover" books, which feature designs from the streets of Japan. In this volume she and her co-author (and a bevy of volunteer quilters) have provided a variation on the theme, borrowing floral designs from 16th century Korea and rendering them in appliqué. The book is a rich cultural mix - part history, part biography, part art - held together by the stories of the quilters and their quilts as they brought these lovely designs to life. Basic appliqué instructions and patterns are included for making some of these quilts. The most spectacular of the quilts is a rendering of the "two pumpkins" design by Madelaine Hutchin of Sussex, England, but all of the quilts are lovely, and as usual with the books from Carriage Trade Press, very different.

5 out of 5 stars One of Shirley's Best.......2002-08-04

This artistic publication is a timeless journey celebrating the
expression of Sim and a tribute to the creativity of quilting.

4 out of 5 stars Lifelike flower designs..........2003-03-24

Cross-Stitch Florals is a design book of bright and crisp images. Not all the charts have photographed finished textiles, but the charts that have been photographed are very attractive. The colors used are bold, bright and lifelike. Included are: Anchor to DMC chart, and inches to metric chart. Color charts (555) are on 10x10 grid, easy to follow, with a floss legend on each page. The introduction includes: fabric, floss, design size, needles, stitching and finishing techniques. The finished pieces have vivid, true to life colors and the color photos are inspiring. It will take some imagination for 90% of the charts that aren't photographed, but this book is a nice addition to a stitching library. I purchased it after looking through the book, so I wasn't surprised by the few color photos.

4 out of 5 stars Whats all the negative fuss about?.......2003-01-29

I thought this book was very interesting when I got it. There are really unusual floral designs. They want you to work them as a grouping. Sure, you have to use your imagination on the end result, but so what. I would rather have more graphs then pages of talk and pictures. Really unusual, classy, designs. Vases, realistic flowers, unusual animals and borders. I think some of these will be good for a man and his office. And we know how hard it is to find mens designs.

5 out of 5 stars Simple designs, but very good........2002-04-04

I really like that the designs are printed in color. They are simple but beautiful. This is my favorite of Marie Barber's books.

3 out of 5 stars Nice collection; not destined to be a favorite........2001-12-20

This book falls short of my favorite Marie Barber book: Gifts of Nature: An American Sampler. The qualities that I liked most about that book are missing from this one. There, Marie had large samplers that were photographed in finished form as well as including ideas of how to pull out portions of the designs for smaller projects. This book is loaded with small patterns but few are shown combined or photographed finished. I would like some suggestions on how to use these patterns individually or combined. I also miss the size charts that tell me how big the finished design will be based on thread count of fabric used; call me lazy.
I have worked a few of these designs, and they are easy to follow as are all of Marie's patterns. So I would say that this is nice book for someone who is looking for a collection of small, simple floral patterns.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but oh so disappointing!.......2001-10-24

I saw this book on this website and as I am an avid cross stitcher and a Marie Barber fan to boot, I decided to buy it after looking at a picture of the front cover and reading the synopsis on the book. However, when it arrived at my doorstep, I was terribly disappointed to see that 90% of the patterns in the book were not shown as completed projects. The book is jam packed full of, what seem to be, lovely patterns, but only about 10% of the patterns are shown as finished. This was a great disappointment to me as I like to look and see what the finished item looks like before I start to stitch it. This helps me to decide whether I am going to use the recommended fabric, or try one in a colour of my own. As far as I am concerned, the author spent so much time packing the book full of patterns that she never took the time to get all the projects stitched and photographed for display. Because of this, I find myself staring endlessly at a pattern that I think I might like to stitch, only to put the book down in disgust, not wanting to waste my time starting a project that I might turn out to dislike. All lovers of the art of Cross Stitching will know what I am talking about when I say this. Finally, and this is the greatest frustration to me, but there is no dialogue in the book....just pages and pages and pages of patterns that may or may not stitch up to the satisfaction of the stitcher. So, the book spends more time on my shelf than it does in use and I regret the wasted money. Having said all this, I still rate the book 3 stars as I don't think I would be too disappointed should I try out one of the patterns as Marie Barber's work is usually a delight to me. However, for those of you who like to see the finished result before you start stitching, this book will be a great source of frustration. It certainly is that to me.
