Book Description

In Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world's most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century's most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographers—from Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named Condé Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossus—from its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazine—from runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. Unparalleled in its scope and exceptionally illustrated, In Vogue is sure to be among the most important publications on the subjects of culture, art, fashion, photography, and media.

What attracts you to Vogue? Chances are that element is represented someplace within the pages of In Vogue.

To me, the photographs are the main appeal of Vogue. Since its founding on December 17, 1892, Vogue has attempted to capture current and future fashion through its images. The magazine has been blessed by talented work done by most of the world's best fashion photographers since then who brought us the most interesting society women, celebrities, cultural icons, and, of course, fashion models. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the book contained at least a few works by each of the greatest photographers to appear in Vogue. Most of the images were known to me, but a number were new. My main disappointment was that the photographers I like the most didn't have more photographs in the book. But the book is very bulky and heavy as it is.

To my interest in the photographs came many essays about why the photographers were selected and what the editors asked them to accomplish. The interaction of the art directors and the photographers was particularly noteworthy in regard to covers.

I have also spent many years as a management consultant in the magazine industry. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there's a pretty complete overview of the management thinking and decisions that led to Vogue becoming so successful.

But the most interesting surprise came in the extended views into the editorial philosophies and working styles of the magazine's editors. Creating a fashion magazine is very demanding, and Vogue has been fortunate in its editors both for their energy and their vision for the reader.

If neither business nor editing interest you, you'll still find lots of marvelous images to help you trace the development of fashion and style in the United States over the last 100 plus years.

Here are a few of my favorite photographs in the book:

3 out of 5 stars Just OK........2007-06-28

I liked the information and photos about the early Vogue, and wish there was more of it. I was not so interested in the later stuff, as it seemed overly self-important. Instead of presenting fashion, the current Vogue seems to commision special clothes for its photo shoots. What's the point if you can't buy that? Plus the photos don't even show what the clothes look like. I have better books on fashion, but this really was about the history of the magazine, and as such it succeeds. I just don't happen to like the magazine as it never shows anything I'd want to wear.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificient overview of an iconic magazine.......2007-06-22

Ten gets you one that when you ask someone to name a fashion magazine, the first answer you get will be, "Vogue". That's how much of an institution the magazine has become. While "Elle" and "Women's Wear Daily" might dispute the contention, "Vogue" seems to have become the periodical of record for worldwide haute couture. As such, as the authors note in their introduction, a basic history is past due. With a great deal of help from the Vogue staff itself - Anna Wintour, the magazine's longtime editor (and so prominent a figure in her own right that Meryl Streep's spoof of her in last year's movie "The Devil Wears Prada" was instantly recognizable), is prominent in the list of contributors - Angeletti and Oliva, magazine historians both, have assembled an informative text and a gorgeous array of imagery which effectively covers the century-plus history of Vogue, from the cover of the very first magazine to the latest photos of Nicole Kidman. The book is certainly a highly display-worthy item, as another reviewer has suggested, but more than that, it's meant to be leafed through and read. You can find it brand-new at a wide variety of prices, but even if all the Amazon Marketplace sellers were somehow sold out of their copies, it'd still be worth the list price!

5 out of 5 stars A travel through time by book.......2007-05-14

The authors of In Vogue composed a diversified chronicle of the appearance and the development of Vogue from 1892 until today. The photographs chosen portray the history of fashion photography wonderfully, each of them either a ravishing new sight or a spectacular recognition. The structuring by Decade, introduction of publishers, contributing editors, photographers, etc interposed by special contributions and excerpts of resumes offers the reader a diverting journey trough publishing history in general and the publishing of fashion in particular.

A lovely book with interesting stories but I was after beach gardens and there are very few. The title is misleading as it is from the magazine by this name.

4 out of 5 stars Hamptons Cottages and Gardens.......2007-09-06

This is a beautiful book which is as entertaining to read as it is to gaze at the pictures! I would have appreciated it more had all the houses featured been in a similar style to the one on the cover. There is quite a large spectrum of different designs. I wished they had presented more photographs of each individual home, but overall there is plenty to feast your eyes on.

The book was purchased for an anniversary gift for my daughter who resides on one of the Hamptons. She liked the book and even was familiar with the owner of the garden on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars Which one to Choose?.......2007-08-17

With the 300 beautiful bouquets in this beautiful little book that are so beautifully photographed it will be hard for the bride to decide which one to choose. The photography is exquisite and shows the bouquets off to perfection giving you a brief description of how it's made and which type of dress it would be appropriate with and the scents they carry. What more could you ask for?
I would recommend this book for all brides in waiting, to help them decide what type of bouquet to choose, for their special occasion.

4 out of 5 stars Good for color ideas.......2007-07-12

This is a great little book to help you get ideas on colors and different types of flowers for your wedding. It's current and gives you just enough information.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but not exciting.......2007-05-15

I bought this book when I was trying to plan my wedding, reading all the reviews I felt that it could be an excellent resource. On the good side, the pictures are really beautiful with close ups of each arrangement. It is also very well organized with each section focusing on the main colors in the bouquet. Unfortunately, I found the bouquets themselves to be completely unexciting, I got more ideas flipping through wedding magazines. There was not a single arrangment that I ended up showing my florist as an example.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2007-01-18

HI! This book had just what I needed to determine what kind of boquet I wanted. It was all PICTURES of RELAVENT stuff and not just a bunch of words. Also it lists out what kind of flowers are in each boquet and what they mean. That is awesome!

4 out of 5 stars A great place to get ideas for your bouquet.......2007-01-10

This book has so many lovely, colorful photos of wedding flowers you will be spoiled for choice. I found it an excellent armchair guide to the many options out there for the bridal bouquet. Even if you have no idea where to start, this book will give you plenty of ideas for picking a stunning modern wedding bouquet.

Best of BUTT: Bringing back the "sex" in homosexuality

Since its first legendary issue in 2001, international quarterly magazine BUTT has been bringing together groups of young alternative gay guys all around the world, connecting fashion, sex, and art with a good sense of irony.

Put together by the magazine's founding editors Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers in collaboration with photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, this book is a 'best of' compilation of the first 17 issues of BUTT, full of interviews with famous personalities and photographs by the likes of Terry Richardson, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Wolfgang Tillmans as well as unknown talent. Collectors of the magazine who have been desperately searching for rare back issues will be able to round out their collections with this compendium, which will also be a delight for those who haven't yet discovered the joy of BUTT.

With sexy pictures of, and candid interviews with: Asianpunkboy, Bruce Benderson, Peter Berlin, AA Bronson, Christopher Ciccone, Al Eingang, Simon Foxton, Marc Jacobs, Heinz Peter Knes, Marcelo Krasilcic, Inez van Lamsweerde, Bruce LaBruce, Lutz, Matmos, Ryan McGinley, Alasdair McLellan, Stephin Merritt, Walter Pfeiffer, Terry Richardson, Jeremy Scott, Hedi Slimane, Casey Spooner, Michael Stipe, Wolfgang Tillmans, Viktor & Rolf, Domenic Vine, Matthias Vriens, Rufus Wainwright, John Waters, Bernhard Willhelm, Jonny Wooster, Gus van Sant, Edmund White.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not For The Small-Minded.......2007-07-13

This book is a collection of frank interviews and pictoral articles that will keep you turning pages until you've finished each and every one of the too-few-at-550+ pages. The more you read, the more you want. Each story is a voyeuristic acid trip into some aspect of the gay world that you probably hadn't even imagined existed.
Have you ever seen someone interesting walking down the street, and wondered what their story was? Well, what if someone went and asked them simple but insightful questions and then actually got answers? You would have this book. Some of the people being interviewed are somebodies...some are anybodies, and some are nobodies...but they are all equally interesting when asked the right questions.
Trust me, if you have a curious mind, you will love this book. If you already have all the answers, you probably just want to keep right on walkin'.

5 out of 5 stars Love it but just buy it somewhere else..........2007-05-17

I first ordered this book from amazon but they kept on delaying the shipment until I saw the book at a local Tower Records store so, I cancelled the order and bought it brand new. It cost a little more but sometimes you just have to have what you want asap.

Now, about the book. Unlike some review I read here stating that this book portraits young, famous and rich men. Not at all, the interviews are great, intelligent and witty and the characters portrayed range from music stars to ordinary guys (not ordinary like in "common", but simply "not famous"). The format is pretty simple, a Q&A session but it's perfect for revealing every character's personality, interests and humor.

Most of the pictures are cool, others are weird.

I recommend this book if you want to have a broad picture of the gay subculture out there or if you want to get to know better what's going on in the gay cultural world.

1 out of 5 stars It's just porn ..........2007-02-22

I flipped through this trash at American Apparel. It's just a new, sort of elitist way of repackaging porn. It's just as destructive as regular porn. More execs trying to sell us on what is attractive and what is not; i.e., young, muscled, endowed, rich = attractive and worthy of the gay "community's" attention, anything else = not.

You all can give this review "unhelpful" votes, all you want. Truth be told, gays wouldn't care about this magazine if it did not feature handsome, young white men. Look at all the attention given to CNN's Thomas Roberts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-01-30

This book is wonderful for entertainment while on the toilet! You can even use the pages if you run out of toilet paper! The pictures are quite lovely and the European aesthetic is so much better than anything manufactured in the US. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars BUTT-tastic!.......2007-01-10

I love the magazine and I'm absolutely in love with this book! I accidentally ran across Butt a couple of years ago while doing some research on one of my favorite creatures alive: Wolfgang Tillmans (who has quite a contribution to the magazine as well as this book, specifically). The magazine is funny, candid, refreshing, gorgeously-sleazy in a honest/tounge-(and whatever else)-in-cheek sort of way, and highly intelligent to boot. This book is all of that bounded into one Butt. It is one giant amazing Buttfest.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Nice imagery, nice thoughts, no technical info.......2006-09-03

Briefly looking through this book you can quickly see that it is not a technical design book.

It does a very nice job at praising various popular magazines, and it does highlight fundamental design practices within magazine design.

It is a good overview book. It is also a good book to see many images of successful magazines without having to hunt down various magazines.

However, the problem is the book does not going into the technical process of magazine layout. Magazine layout IS a very technical process that most books don't explain. There is much about the grid - it is extremely important and very under estimated. It is also more simple than most people would think. There is also much about magazine layout and structure this book will not cover. Also about the whole process, from layout to print. There are a MILLION questions and problems that pop-up while designing a magazine. Many considerations and variables that vary. This book does not bring up any of those.

Can you design a magazine after reading this book? No.
Can you evaluate and understand magazines better after reading this book? Yes.
Can you get a feeling for what magazine design is about after reading this book? Yes.
Can you get some great ideas out of this book? Yes. ...you can also get them by looking through quality magazines.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-02-19

Very helpful in what's "hot" in magazine design. Covers differnt genres in mag. design. Extensive reasearch and helps generate different design ideas. Only complaint: Took 2 long to recieve. From my order date, it took over a month.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2005-01-19

I think a person's appreciation of this book depends on their particular field and learning style. I work as a graphic designer for a number of different hobby magazines, and my learning style is that of a sponge - I see something, I soak it up. This book was PERFECT for me. I like to page through it, soak up the ideas, immerse myself in these various styles of good design before embarking on my own projects. I have a number of design collections, but this is the best one I've seen that's magazine specific. I also found the articles interesting and to the point, but they are more of a supplement to the designs.

1 out of 5 stars pretty pictures, little info.......2004-11-01

I'm just launching a new magazine, so I have alot to learn. I have read some terrific books; this is not one of them. Basically the pictures are nice, but I honestly cannot think of one thing I learned from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational rather than informative.......2004-06-04

I found this book to be a good place to look for inspiration and overall themes. It doesn't get too much into the nitty-gritty, hard-working pages of ads mixed with content, but it does talk about process and consistency of voice. The author lets several editors explain the design choices they made when faced with title relaunches and updates, and how those choices reinforced the type, photography, writing style, and illustrations used. There are rationale breakdowns of section headers, feature articles, grids, typography, photographic styles, etc, for several well-maintained and respected magazines.

5 out of 5 stars Best Real-World Examples.......2006-10-15

I blame Amazon for this horrible problem I have with buying gillions of design books...most are good references but not really day-2-day tools and inspiration...in my lastest order, got this book and RIGHT AWAY I was stoked with the samples and the dogma presented. YIPPEE!

4 out of 5 stars Nice but..........2006-06-27

As with other books by Samara (e.g. Typography Workbook), this one is filled with beautiful and relevant examples. My only gripe would be that... the type used for the main text is too light and hard to read! - which kind of contradicts the subject? :-/

3 out of 5 stars Needs a Glossary.......2006-06-17

As an introduction to publication design the book is good.

The only criticism I have is that there is no glossary or even an index. There are some places in the book where a term is introduced before it's been described so at times I was wondering if I'd missed something. The term is eventually described, usually a couple of paragraphs or sometimes pages later, so if you're not reading the book from beginning to end it can be difficult to find the place where a term is described.

The book does not offer an exhaustive treatment of design principles and I will buy other books to learn more, but it's been a helpful introduction.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2006-03-21

This book is great. I'm not even finshed with it yet and already I've learned a lot. It's full of usefull tips that I never learned in school. It is a wlecome contrast to the many industry books that show you lot of examples but no explanations for the principles behind the design. I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for birders.......2007-02-21

This is a great book for anyone interested in backyard birding, no matter what size your backyard may be. There are articles on how to attract, feed, and house different birds.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-02-16

I like this book. I'm a new bird watcher. I've made some of the projects mentioned in this book and they work quite well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for bird-loving gardeners!.......2007-01-12

Numerous, easy to follow instructions on how to create wide variety of projects! Includes illustrations also. Must have for those that want to attract birds to their gardens without spending a fortune buying items ready-made. Would be a good resource for those wanting to learn how to make garden produces to sell also.

5 out of 5 stars Projects for the Birder's Garden.......2006-11-28

The book arrived promptly and was a good bargain price. It had very good information on attracting and taking care of birds.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR LIBRARY - RECOMMEND HIGHLY.......2005-09-07

I have been a "birder" for over 45 years and a gardener (in a very sloppy, haphazard way) for just about as long. This is a wonderul work that fits well into my hobbies. It is simple, practical and a joy to work with. As another reviewer pointed out, the ideas put forth in this book actually work! I was also thrilled that most of these projects were ones that my four grandsons were more than able to help with and in doing so, actually taught them something. I happen to live in a rural area, infact, I live in the middle of the woods. Most of the projects in this book were non-intrusive and blended in well with the natural look that my wife and I strive for. Recommend you add this one to your library. Now if I can just train my nine barn cats......

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide and reference material........2007-01-10

I use this book to teach my first year graphic design students. It has some excellent and simple illustrations. The layout of the book is very friendly and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!! - "Conflicted" should look a little deeper!.......2006-12-02

First of all, if "Conflicted" found the book difficult to follow, so be it. Mileage varies from person to person. And I will agree, the cover is a disappointment.

However, the part you couldn't read was a design element, not intended as text to be read; the **title** is printed in clear letters at the top of the cover. Second, this book is intended for beginners and - since we supposedly learn 90% of everything we *ever* learn by example - it tries to teach as much by example as by assertion. Hence, the informal style and wonderful profusion of examples. White **shows** as well as tells on almost every two-page spread - that's one of the major strengths of the book, in my opinion. Instead of distracting the reader by content-specific illustrations, he chose **very carefully** hand-drawn illustrations - and, by the way, mostly black and white to keep the book affordable. And for all that concrete terminology you couldn't find - try the Glossary that begins on p. 241.

As I said, your mileage may vary. But to me, this book presents the basic concepts of page and type design for the beginner in a way that really worked for me. 30 years later, I still value it!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Mr White........2006-05-13

I have probably never learned more about any subject than I have with this book. Being the eternal student, I can be critical if a book doesn't teach me anything new, or pads itself out with extraneous rot. This book does neither of these things. It is concise, incredibly comprehensive, clear, honest and delivers much much MUCH. How I would love to get inside this man's brain and/or have him partner my business! The attention to detail and range of example is exhilarating. An exemplary work that could very well have delivered the bones of my entrepreneurial idea, or at the very least, given me the vim and knowledge to execute it. Thank you, Mr White.

2 out of 5 stars Conflicted.......2005-09-21

The Good:
The book contains an abundance of illustrations which can be very helpful. The author uses the text of the book itself as bad examples of design.
The Bad:
As a newbie to publication design, I approached this book as a student. I probably would have never even opened the cover of it if it weren't required for a class. The design of the cover (and most of the book) is horrible. I can't read the title and it does nothing to attract me visually. The illustrations are so sloppy they are unprofessional. Although sketches in real life should be messy, the sketches in the book should at least be interpretable. The author never uses any concrete terminology, so it is difficult categorize information as you absorb it.

4 out of 5 stars An Especially Useful Feature . . ........2005-08-11

Rather than reiterating what other reviewers have already done a great job of covering, I'll simply put my proverbial 2 cents worth in for my favorite feature of the book.

Anyone who has taken design classes or read many design books has seen that the authors almost always instruct the reader to sketch out "roughs" of ideas on paper while doing the initial brainstorming on a design. This is the only book I've run into with any quantity of such sketches included.

It's always a pleasure to see an author put their money, or in this case their page space, where their mouth is.

Nicely Done.

5 out of 5 stars Eastern sock parade!.......2000-10-01

Aspiring and experienced Eastern sock fanatics! This is your book! Full color photos and charts and sketches of how to knit Eastern socks. Shows many historical beauties in enough detail to copy. Here are my thoughts on knitting these socks. They are dreamy and historically compelling--but the foot of yesterday's Eastern women is shaped totally different than my foot. I need Western socks with western shaping. Would I ever knit a pair of these socks? Why sure--when I die and go to knitting heaven and get 20/20 vision and magic knitting needles that lead my hands to create these art socks. Do I reccomend this book? Of course. I've spent many wonderful afternoons in the hammock with this book, dreaming which ones I'll knit. I usually pick the Eastern Anatolian stockings as I think the lovely russet shadings will look great on my feet as I hop from cloud to cloud. Now--down to earth ! The best part of this book is there are directions for minature samplers of the major sock styles in this book. You could knit these as a collection and display them as an art grouping--or sew them into quilt squares for a stunning wall hanging. I think it's a very pratical application if you desire to try your hand at knitting these intricate designs successfully. This is a beautifully well thought out book and has given me many hours of pleaure reading and viewing these socks and the directions for making them. :)Miz Socks Cox

5 out of 5 stars Not just about knitting socks!.......1999-06-02

I'd recommend this book to anyone who's been knitting for a while and wants to learn new techniques - NOT "just" sock knitters. It's certainly not a "how to knit" book, but it covers subjects that could improve any knitter's technique.

The subject of the book is the Art of sock knitting, as practised in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Art section of the book is well researched and well presented. The pictures make it fun to read.

The focus of the book is on the Craft by which these works of art are created. This book includes a compendium of cast on techniques, analysis of knitting styles, detailed instruction on how to spin yarn which will wear well and maintain its shape, and great information on designing, especially with multiple colors.

The section on knitting intarsia (multiple colored pictures) IN THE ROUND is worth the cost of the book by itself. There are multiple options for shaping toes and heels, and for solving typical sock knitting and fitting problems as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, thorough book about Central Asian socks.......1999-03-13

This is a wonderful book if you've become fascinated with knitting socks. Priscilla covers the traditional, knit from the toes up socks of Central Asia. She also covers spinning your own yarn, East/West hybrids, and working sample socks to learn the techniques.

The book is well written, well laid out and the socks are fabulous! It covers some of the same territory as Fancy Feet and Anatolian Socks, but I'd recommend this book if you could only have one!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars very complete.......2007-03-26

very complete and well explained, with interesting comments. It gives you ideas and opens your mind if you are a not-so-expert person on the subject

1 out of 5 stars Design Trumps Function?.......2007-03-11

For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.

1 out of 5 stars Almost unreadable.......2007-02-02

Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one

5 out of 5 stars strong examples.......2007-01-29

this is a great book, it give a very nice examples about the best graphics in the market and how it was made. It can inspire you.

1 out of 5 stars Great for Big City Designers, but not for me.......2007-01-22

I produce newsletters for non-profit's on a true shoestring budget. I am constantly searching for inspiration that is do-able on a shoestring budget (no color, no fancy paper, no long-winded discussions about the "role" of the designer - "sheesh") but found literally nothing in this book helpful to me, that makes the book worth keeping on my shelf.

If you have big budgets and staff, this book might be useful for you.

When going with two colors is a "challenge" you know that the designers whose work is being held up as the best of design really have no clue about the challenges faced by those working for needy but worthwhile agencies who cannot afford to hire "designers" but need to get information out, and attempt to do so in a visually pleasing and accessible way.
