"A life without direction is a life without passion," says motivational specialist, therapist, and career counselor Barbara Sher. In I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was, a sort of broader, less dense, and less intimidating version of What Color Is Your Parachute?, she reveals how to "recapture long lost goals, overcome the blocks that inhibit your success, decide what you want to be, and live your dreams."

This is a perfect book for new college graduates or anyone sick and tired of languishing in a dead-end job or relationship--yet reluctant to make drastic life changes due to uncertainty about what would actually inspire them. I Could Do Anything combines the I'm-not-buying your-excuses inspiration of Dr. Laura Schlessinger with the soothing, analytic encouragement of Dr. Martin Seligman in his classic Learned Optimism. In other words, Sher will pick you up off your butt and get you moving. She's included enough self-analytical exercises in here to save you hundreds of dollars in therapy.

Whether you're looking to make improvements in your job or personal life, Sher will teach you how to determine what your goals are, and how to successfully reach them--even if right now the only thing you know is that you're vaguely to very unhappy and haven't the foggiest idea what to do with yourself.

5 out of 5 stars MyBestLifeCoach Applauds this Book.......2007-10-05

As a life coach, I find that most people really do know what they want in life. There is a subset of folks who truly have no clue; this is an excellent resource for them. I find that most confusion about life goals does come from resistance to declaring, "I want this". Ms. Sher deals with these issues beautifully in her book, and I use many of her ideas in my coaching work with clients. All of Barbara Sher's books are an excellent vehicle for stimulating change, but many people will need a life coach to move through the change process.

5 out of 5 stars "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" might be your answer.......2007-08-06

Steve Jobs' commencement speech at Stanford University. In it, he says the advice we've all heard a thousand times:

"You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." - Steve Jobs

Barbara Sher has some excellent books, DVDs, CDs and seminars on helping you to find your passion. Get your hands on everything that you can until one of them turns on that light bulb and you discover what that passion is and then do everything in your power to follow.

One example she offers: You have a passion for ice skating and competing, but you are not quite good enough to make it professionally. Well, there are still alternatives. Go to work for the Ice Follies in some capacity that keeps you close to your passion. Take a position in sales with a manufacturer of ice skates, etc. You get the idea.

You have to work hard at this and try to think out of the box. Let Barbara Sher help you step by step.

If Barbara is not the answer for you, don't stop looking or you may follow my true story below.

In my youth, after leaving my hometown, I read all of the books and listened to all of the tapes PMA, success, motivation, sales and on and on and they helped.

But, "If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be and what would you be doing?" Traveling on a sailboat through out the South Sea Islands didn't seem like it was going to make me a fortune or support my family. It is still necessary to be pragmatic.

So, what do you think happened? I did what probably 99% of the population does. I went to work for a large corporation and at the end of nearly 5 years I realized this wasn't for me. I had been transferred 5 times in 5 years, San Francisco to Houston to Philadelphia to Houston to Los Angeles and finally to San Diego. But, the reality set in. What was I trained to do? The answer was, since I had been the general manager of a national collection agency with branches across the United States, I would open a collection agency. That's what I knew and I knew I was good at it. And, I knew I could make good money doing it.

And, all of a sudden, I was the President of my own company, small though it might have been at the time.

But, then the frightening reality set in, I hated what I was doing. I didn't look forward to getting up each morning and racing into the office and I hated the overwhelming stress that came with being the President of my own company . But, of course, now I was in my late forties so what was I going to do? The only practical thing was to continue going in to a job I hated and tough it out until retirement time. My life had flashed before my eyes and twenty five years had gone by, unfulfilled, unsatisfied and day by day.

The point is that this is what happens to most of us in life. We get rapped up in the day to day routine, the need to make enough money to pay our bills and raise our children and then all of a sudden, it is over. The children have grown and there we are.

I had essentially done the same thing, but I left Spokane, Washington after high school and had been introduced to a whole other world, one with goals, goal setting, big dreams, Zig Ziglar`s, Brian Tracey`s, etc.

What I lacked was the single most important thing of all, finding my passion and following it. And, finally I discovered "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" by Barbara Sher which was recommended by a close, successful friend. Now, I am recommending it to you.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I Ever Read!.......2007-07-15

This book covered every question I could think of about life transition like: (1)What do I really love and what do I want to do with the rest of my life? (2)What's keeping me from moving forward in my life? (3)What is resistance and where does it come from? (4)What part of me is my real-self and why has it been in hiding so long? (5)Why action is better than analysis when I'm in a low mood? (6)How to move beyond a hurtful past. (7)How to overcome narcissistic tendencies. (8)How to claim and create a new life for myself.

Barbara Sher demonstrates how understanding that there is a reason for everything and finding that reason, can literally transform one's life. She encourages compassionate understanding as opposed to deep analysis of problems. She supplies creative, fun exercises that help target and clarify the answers to a myriad of questions. Her suggestions are priceless, like how to create your own support system.

This book is an artful fusion of creative career counseling, wise therapy, motivational inspiration and plain old common sense teaching. I've never seen so much information given away in one book. You'd think it would have taken her a lifetime to write. Thank you Ms. Sher for the best book I have ever read!

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-04-28

Inspiring. Soemthin to keep you thinking about your life choices. You have to do the work though. There is no book out there that will do it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great read & I also recommend..........2007-01-04

I credit Sher's book with my new successful career choice. Her book was recommended by my career counselor. I dug deep, poured my heart into the exercises and came out with a career choice of sales & marketing. (I work for a leading environmental consulting company & my choice has been financially rewarding).

Another book also recommended by my career counselor and one I highly recommend is
The Sales Adventure Guide. Since I used Sher's book to make the sales career choice - I needed a book that would provide real insight and teach me how to go about "sur-thriving" in the sales world. If you are considering working in sales or marketing - definitely consider this (The Sales Adventure Guide) book.

All the best.

Book Description

Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.

This book is FANTASTIC!
Everyone has a story and has things going on in their life. This book makes everything that happens to you make sense. It allows you to understand why you have ended up where you are in life. Why you have chosen certain paths. And allows you to understand and be at peace with other peoples choices and the way they live their life.
I just loved it.Everyone should have a copy.It is well written, easy to understand and informative. But above all..it just makes sense. And things seem alot more clear to me than they did before I read the book.I loved it.For anyone who needs alittle hope or clarity in their lives..read this book.

This book has some interesting ideas but it is a slow read. Not too sure if I would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Karma is more than payback.......2007-10-11

This book really changed my perspective on my current life situation. I was quite negative about the situation I'm dealing with, feeling it was just the result of past lives in which I had incurred very bad karma and I would just have to live through it. But, after reading this book, I believe I am living this life because of contracts I made in the pre-birth planning. That changes everything for me - if I agreed to the challenges I'm working with because I wanted to help one I love, there can be no resentment, just gratitude for being able to help, and love for the one I'm struggling with. Thank you, Robert Schwartz, what a gift!

5 out of 5 stars So that's why . . ........2007-10-08

If you ever want to get into the backside of your pre-birth planning of your life challenges, read Courageous Souls by Robert Schwartz. Want to know why you attract illness, accidents, birth defects? Want to know why you chose a life of alcoholism or drug addiction, or are around someone who has? Read this book. The stories, while may start out slow at first, are powerful and insightful. Just stick with them. Robert uses mediums who are able to access multiple guides at one time, and your primary guide and listen in on conversations between you and your soul group.

2 out of 5 stars not credible.......2007-09-30

I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mind blowing.......2007-09-19

This is probably one of the best books by Barry Long I have read, it makes you start thinking about the nature of you, and how much we are programmed by soceity. Maybe think is not a good word to use because barry long thinks that thinking is a psychological disease. So read this book, start to meditate and stop to think, that the way to penetrate into your own being.

Enjoy the journey

5 out of 5 stars No compromise in Truth.......2005-09-07

I haven't finished this book yet but am blown away by Barry's directness, integrity and the deep resonance of Truth in his words. This truly is Wisdom for the Western mind. No gurus, no mantras, no spiritual baggage - just the Truth, straight and simple. How the world needs this now....

But Barry's message is only for those who are ready to hear it. I imagine his uncompromising directness and 'zero tolerance' spirituality will deter those who are not prepared for it. Not many people seem ready to hear that they've no right to be unhappy, or that they're entirely responsible for their unhappiness.

A brilliant book. Thank you so much Barry Long.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly original insights into the cause of unhappiness.......2002-03-20

Barry Long's words have got a quality that penetrated me deeply. i found that even when i had finished this book, I kept going over what he had said and saw that it was all the truth. I've never heard anyone talk about the personality like this before, at first i was intrigued. After a while it actually gets a little uncomfortable, it made me look at myself so deeply, more deeply than i ever have before. It gave me insight to how my emotions really work and after reading this I no longer feel as though there is some force beyond me that controls my life and makes me unhappy. This book changed me! d I'm amazed by how much freer i am, it really works! Who doesn't want to be happier? Everyone should read this book, it's absolutely brilliant. Barry must be either totally enlightened or a genius.

5 out of 5 stars Barry Long's Darkness will show you the light........2000-04-04

Barry Long relentlessly hammers you with Truth. When I read this book, I periodically flipped as he pointed out the obvious to the oblivious with deadly accuracy. From guiding us not to tell our sad story, through the crazed media minefields, to the slithering souls waiting to incarnate, Master Long will do something to you. It is up to you to find out what....

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful on the What - Brief on the How.......2007-07-16

I love Scott Morrison's writings. I have found him to be truly committed to living in the now and manifesting Unconditional Love. I learned a lot fomr reading this thin volume.

On the other hand, I myself find it difficult just to "let go" by telling myself to "let go." Telling myself to be committed to living in the present moment has not caused it to happen in my life so far. In that sense, this book might either be:

A) An introduction to where you want to go i.e. creating your destination
or
B) The last step in the journey - when you are the precipice of arrival.

5 out of 5 stars For those on the path.......2003-10-20

I imagine that it must be so difficult to write a book about how to live in the present moment because the mere act of trying to live in the present moment takes us away from it. Despite this difficulty, this book does an admirable job in helping people understand this and eventually "know" this in their hearts. I must admit that just reading the book was incredibly soothing to me. This is a great book if you feel like you could use some help on your path to the spiritual goldmine many people talk about. The book that I presently like the most on this subject is "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone truly interested in personal growth and happiness.

4 out of 5 stars yet another book .. nothing remarkable .. more preliminary.......2003-07-11

On first reading, I did not see any point in the book. This prompted me to read it again, to take a second look. This time I appreciated its content, and the continuity of thread of thought.

I felt that the title did not truly reflect the content. There was not much which takes or directs one to the Now, as grand as the title sounds.

There are no new ideas. The treatment of various topics is more basic. 'Clarity of Motive', 'Clarity or onepointedness of mind', and 'Clarity of View' i.e 'go ahead and be what you already are' - form the main analysis and prescription of the author.

Page 39: " True love is, in fact, what you discover you are, the instant you cease to be preoccupied with yourself as a separate entity with its endless ambitions, problems and worries."

Page 44: "To be enlightened is to be unconditionally intimate with this moment. There is no other time or place to give yourself, totally, to all that is."

Page 45: "If you are willing, completely willing, to let go of every thing you think of as "yourself" and "your life", to bring it all to an absolute STOP, right now, then something profoundly sensitive and beautiful will be free to reveal itself."

Page 51: "If you completely abandon your compulsive preoccupation with your mental/emotional versions of yourself, with their endless ambitions and the constant flow of problems that arise because of them, it's an absolute shock !"

Page 58: "The way of Realization is not difficult. All you have to do is open your eyes ! If you allow yourself to see things as they actually are, without confusing yourself with prior opinions, every thing will be clear and freedom will be everywhere."

Page 75: "Question to the core this fundamental assumption: that there is a separate "you", as pictured or heard or fantasized or remembered in your mind, and that "he" needs to be improved, because he is somehow incomplete or unacceptable."

Page 76: "If you are willing to accept yourself and your life so thoroughly, such that "you" are no longer an issue, all seeking, all searching, all longing will cease. (And even if it arises again, it will be seen for the sham that it is.)"

. . . is all the help one gets about the practice/technique for Realization.

The chapter on 'How delusion works' is a helpful tool to understand the mental prosess of individual self.

In a way, the book teaches the same conventional do good and be good lesson, and some vertically typed lines - what people call as poetry. It only says that without taking things for granted, please see every thing afresh, and you will discover 'something'.

I happened to read 'As It Is' by Tony Parsons, just before this book. I read it twice and hope to read it several times more. 'As it is' seems to be more helpful teaching, as it seems to present some conclusions and techniques directly. Also, 'Consciousness Speaks' by Ramesh Balsekar will make a better reading. Probably one can read "There is only now" as a preliminary preparation to "Consciousness Speaks" or "As it is".

5 out of 5 stars A SOOTHING BOOK FOR THE HEART AND SOUL!.......2001-10-26

This book is as warm as the sun on a hot summer's day and as refreshing as a breath of fresh air. Finding peace, happiness and balance in one's life is not easy these days, but this author has brought some very important messages to the forefront and written a book that both inspires and teaches. The thoughts and words will cause readers to do some serious soul searching about who they are and where they are proceeding on life's path. "There Is Only Now" is a book well worth reading and definitely worth a five-star-plus rating.

5 out of 5 stars Just Great.......2000-11-12

This book is an intellectual discourse on someone's view of religion but a guide for people having personal spiritual experiences. I loved the book. I would also recommend the book An Encounter With A Prophet for the same reasons I appreciated this book

Book Description

In 1975, Jerry Jampolsky cofounded the Center for Attitudinal Healing in Tiburon, California, where people with life-threatening illnesses practice peace of mind as an instrument of transformation. Based on the healing power of love and forgiveness, the 12 principles developed at the center, and explained in this book, embrace the idea that total giving and total acceptance are crucial to the healing process and that attitudinal healing can lead to harmony, joy, and life without fear.

5 out of 5 stars Like coming home..........2005-08-18

Even though this book was written several years ago...I find that when I return to it, even now, it is truly like coming home, like the warmth of visiting an old friend. Filled with wisdom and spiritual insight, it inspires and creates inner peace by reminding us all that our essence is, indeed, love...which "doesn't care what you call it...love just is. It unfolds endlessly and beautifully upon itself." Thank you, Dr. J.

4 out of 5 stars Love is all there is.......2003-01-25

In this slim volume there are all the words that we need to convey the idea that if we teach only about and with love there is no need for anything else. We are love and when we teach with that expression, only good can result. Easy to reach and one to keep for your library. It is a classic.

1 out of 5 stars 60s mind-expanding era meets 21st century love.......2002-07-09

The first few chapters held great promise, but this book got pretty weird quick. Clinics that teach only love are a great idea, but I'd rather have their workbook filled with application and result oriented material than this "guru's" personal history..."man". To save yourself a read, imagine someone you respect and trust, possibly more than anyone you really know. And they say to you, "In the moment of choice, when you choose how your heart will deal with a situation--use only love." When walk away from them, believe them wholeheatedly for the rest of your life and take time to remember and apply their words daily. Then, spare yourself the read on this book--it get's weird fast... Writing about your 60s mind expanding experiences? Come on, the movie Ghandi teaches more about love than this. (I threw the book away.)

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-02-26

This is a great hands on book,no religion needed, just add LOVE.

4 out of 5 stars Simple. practical advice for healing.......2001-01-28

Just as a wise person won't fight fire with fire, one is ill-advised to fight hatred with hatred - whether it's sexism, racism, or any other -ism. Love IS the universal solvent, which Jampolsky proves again and again in this book, with stories and principles, examples and suggestions. Rather than doing battle with our demons, we're enouraged to RELEASE them. This book embodies the best of a Judeo-Christian outlook without being preachy or religious.

3 out of 5 stars narration not as clear as I would like.......2007-07-11

The NLT translation is a good translation and one of the few translations that actually words sentences in modern spoken English. No inverted negatives, no run-on sentences, no awkward wording.

Having said that, the recording was a bit disappointing. The hortatory passages in Psalms and elsewhere had too much inflection and became irritating after awhile. In Malachi I noticed that the narrator often dropped the ends of sentences and I couldn't hear what was said. He often does this when he is racing to get to the next sentence. I know that people in society often speak this way, but on a CD I am trying to become familiar with the passage; it doesn't help if I can't hear it. In order to hear the drop offs, I have to elevate the volume to an uncomfortable level. The production company needed a little more quality control in the processing.

The narrator has nice voice and is enjoyable to listen to in the calmer passages. Listen to the CD quality- try Malachi- before you put out the big bucks.

5 out of 5 stars My Highest Recommendation.......2007-04-26

When I was thinking of how to provide a meaningful review of this version of the Bible, a Paul Baloche song lyric of "Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord" is what came to mind. In short, I give my highest recommend for this version of the Bible. Todd Busteed, the narrator, was superlative in injecting the necessary life into the stories of the men and women documented in the Bible. Knowledge is power. Having spent the past few weeks listening to the all the stories and testimonies contained in the Bible, I am now a richer person in dealing with life's various pathways that we all face on a daily basis.

Why did I obtain this version of the Bible? I wanted to know what was in the Bible beyond the sound bites and verse pointers that one typically gets in a weekly church service. Considering that there is over 70 hours worth of oral stories in the Bible, the short glances that one gets on a weekly basis can leave one wanting for more; I wanted first hand knowledge of the contexts of each sermon's highlighted Bible passage.

Why listen rather than read the Bible? My past forays into reading the Bible left me quickly reaching a crossroads between my desire for knowledge of the Bible and my ability to set aside the appropriate time to read the Bible over a many month duration. Factoring in that I have a daily round-trip work commute of one hour, I wanted to see if listening to the Bible would satisfy my thirst. As a pleasant surprise, once I got into the habit of listening to the Bible to and from work, I actually looked forward to driving on any occasion so that I could hear more of the life stories contained in the Bible. Now that I have taken in the Bible via a verbal method, I believe that taking in the Bible in this manner allows one to reflect more thoughtfully to what one is listening to as they are hearing the stories of the Bible rather than the starts and stops one experience's when reading the Bible.

If you've ever served on jury duty, you're familiar with the instructions that you should to listen to the entire body of knowledge before reaching any conclusions. I would recommend this advice as you listen to the Bible, as the twists, turns, and plots that are a contained throughout the Bible cause shifts in one's interpretation of the knowledge that is contained in the Bible.

Rather than continue this review with specific personal Biblical stories of note to me, let me conclude this review by saying that if your spiritual journey has not included reading or hearing the Bible from beginning (Genesis: "In the beginning...") to end (Revelation: "May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's holy people."), my highest recommendation is that this audio version of the Bible is an excellent forum for you to enrich your journey.

It has been my pleasure to know the author, Dana Snyder-Grant as a professional colleague and to have followed her through her professional and personal journey. Her book reflects the honesty and humility and optimistic view of life that I have always seen and experienced with Ms. Snyder-Grant. She has allowed us into her everyday world with its subsequents ups and downs and has reinforced the simple truths of life--the importance of supportive and accepting friends and loved ones and the ability to take life one day at a time and stay in the moment. This book should serve as an inspiration for anyone who struggles with chronic illness and those who care for and about them.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable read for anyone who wants to understand more about disability........2007-01-10

This is a fine book with presents an intriguing insight into the traumas and everyday of being disabled. I understand more about MS now and about what it is like to live with disability. The book really works. I was drawn into the consistency of theme which defines each group of chapters, and sometimes into the chronology of each section. The themes of the first 5 sections are especially compelling; I was drawn in with a desire to know more. That is not to say that the last 2 sections are not good, they are just lighter and more about the everyday.

    A valuable read.

    5 out of 5 stars Just Like Life...Dana Snyder-Grant.......2007-01-06

Dana Snyder Grant has written a very engaging and impressive collection of personal essays and reflections on living life fully and well with M.S. She is a mental health professional who is dedicated to working with medically ill and physically challenged adults to help them achieve the optimal adaptation to their particular challenges. She shines through as a person with wonderful integrity, empathy and attunement as well as with a robust sense of humor and perspective. This book will "speak" to M.S. patients, their families and friends. I enthusiastically recommend Just Like Life... Stan Berman, Ph.D.

    5 out of 5 stars What a find.......2006-07-23

This has to be one of the most heartwarming books I have read in years. It's well written. It's thoughtful. It makes you smile. It makes you laugh and it makes you think about your own life. I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend this book.
