5 out of 5 stars Favorite Graphic Design Book.......2007-09-21

I just finished reading all but one or two chapters of this book for a class where this was the primary text. I have to say that this book goes everywhere with me and has become a favorite. Compared to the other text books I had this semester (and many others as well), this was a breath of fresh air. The writing was never dry and it never dragged. What I read really stuck with me and I looked forward to my weekly reading. Also having the exercises at the end of most of the chapters is wonderful for a student for further learning that truly is self-paced. I plan on doing most, if not all of these exercises for further practice. I am definitely going to have to look into Landa's other titles as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best G.D. Book out there!.......2007-04-04

Was advised to buy from instrucor as additional class materials and found I love this book! Covers from core information to breaking down new media and cutting edge styles. Would not go without this book if you are interested in learning about graphic design as an art and a science. Great organization and use of information -good for any level designer.

4 out of 5 stars Graphics Student.......2007-02-23

I am taking a night course that required this book. Amazon.com had the best price. The book itself has many beautiful graphic illustrations and the text is fairly easy to read. It is not the total snoozer I thought it would be and has many fun projects to illustrate the points made in the text. All-in-all not a bad course book although this is not something I would have ever picked up for personal reading.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Intermediate Designers.......2007-02-20

This book is a big help if you have been thrust into a job where you must come up with a great design for a poster or flyer. Gives you as many or as little steps as you think are necessary. Good reference.

4 out of 5 stars Great Text For Art students.......2007-01-04

Combining great illustrations along with good information, this text truly delivers what many are lacking in. From print to web design, this book explores many facets of Design.

3 out of 5 stars Vista incompatability........2007-10-11

I purchased the software for a class and found out the software doesn't work on Vista. Not anyones fault but my own. So although the book is required and provides reading the ability for me to do software excercises is nil on my computer.
The purchase process was fast and I was pleased with the quickness of delivery. The book is new and overall I am happy with the outcome.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-10-10

The book is good for working with GIS, I especially like the CDs that come with it that allows you to practice at home...any college taking GIS would be lucky to have this book!!

5 out of 5 stars ArcGIS.......2007-09-28

The Book is perfect. I received activation and registration from the publisher the next business day for starting use the software. I am perfectly satisfy with the product.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2007-09-14

Very through tutorial. Successfully completing the lessons in this book would probably be worth 4 semester units if it were a college level course.

It can be a little obtuse at times therefore 4 stars not 5.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect guide to learn ArcGIS.......2007-08-27

Complete, easy to use and with a lot of color illustration step by step, the best guide for a software i have ever read...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2005-06-22

I have many years of architectural drafting experience. Although this book says "Basic Skills" on the cover, it is much more than basic. It's an excellent reference book, covering everything that is needed for interior design drafting: from line weights to scale, dimensioning, plans, elevations, sections, checklists, furniture and finish schedules, contract documents, and the list goes on. I highly recommend this book for students of interior design and practising designers alike.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Poor value.......2007-10-12

While much of the covered material is well presented, the price cannot be justified. Design Basics Index is a far better value that presents similar information with more mini "case study" examples. I'm also disappointed that the discussion of new technologies is still weak like the previous version.

I wish that this book could be affordable the way that Princeton Architectural Press' books (such as Ellen Lupton's excellent book "Thinking with Type" are.

The people this book is most aimed at - beginning students - are those who can least afford it.

2 out of 5 stars Some excellent parts, grossly misleading web design and computer info.......2007-08-23

I read the book cover-to-cover before writing this review. Generally speaking, it is a very good intro to basic "graphical design" concepts. The first half of the book, examples focus on specific concepts of good design, and explains them well without unnecessary verbiage.

For example, the writer correctly assumes that most people have less knowledge of good font usage than good picture usage. She explains that the space inside fonts must be considered as shapes that contribute to and can be used in design, not just the shapes of the letters themselves. She details the history of font families just enough to teach you why they are made the way they are.

I also learned that things like "Helvetica" are a font-FAMILY, not a specific font, and that DIFFERENT PEOPLE often make the specific fonts in a family, such as the various italic, condensed, and extended variations, and therefore the sizes often don't match. That's critical information for websites because you must ensure text on your page looks the way you want for various fonts/users. However, there really was not an direct explanation of all this, the information is scattered in a couple of chapters and is mostly hinted at when you read about how the "Univers" font-family was created to have an identical "x-height" regardless of the specific font used.

Things like repetition and visual weight are explained clearly and succinctly. The history of different design movements is given to allow students to analyze design approaches from various points of view.

Exercises for chapters are interesting. In earlier chapters, they have a very specific focus, and in later ones, students are combining design techniques. What I really like is that she mixes professional examples of design with those students created for a portfolio. Some of their work is quite good! There is just the right amount of great examples of professional work. If someone wants a complete collection of some of the best design work, it would be appropriate to pick up a copy of Problem Solved.

I (unfortunately) expect people in the "graphical design" field to ignore usability and accessibility in website design, and approach the subject with limited knowledge and a let's-show-off-the-eye-candy approach. However, Ms. Arntson goes beyond mere ignorance and directly contributes to the devil-may-care attitude with statements like, "you don't really need to learn HTML" and "create your webpage in PhotoShop".

She's even crass enough to include a list of "good website design" tips that would not even make the grade in an "HTML for dummies" book. Her idea of website "design" is using wizards (implied, since says don't learn HTML) to create tables and frames, and dragging-and-dropping buttons in a WYSIWYG program.

Even if she's no expert, she could have at least mentioned that while web design is a topic not covered but not difficult, it will be important for students to study cross-device (not just cross-browser) compatibility and accessibility issues as they develop good web design habits. Some necessities are not using frames, moving away from tables-based design, testing websites in a variety of browsers (including a text-based browser and a cell phone, or at least using "Shift+F11" in Opera to shrink the page to cell-phone size -- though that doesn't address the fact that cell phones and other devices don't do frames or even tables), and avoiding JavaScript except for non-essential eye candy.

She even claims that Flash automatically avoids download-time problems -- we all know that couldn't be further from the truth! Flash can be good or really, really bad, depending whether a person bothers to learn to optimize it. Not to mention, you might as well walk up to a blind person and slap them across the face.

She says that filenames must be eight characters because of different operating systems (Windows, Unix, etc.)...where in the heck did she get that idea? Any OS that can run a webserver understands long filenames, and has for years. Does she think people run webservers on DOS???

Everything before the last few chapters was immensely enjoyable and well-written. Even before all the explicitly WRONG web design info, though, she totally lost my respect when she said this: "The central processing unit (CPU), the main part of the system, houses the hard drive." OMG! HA! HA! HA! Did an editor even look at this book before letting it out the door???

This book is just proof that publishers will let anyone write a textbook even if they have no idea what they are talking about. That's not the only hilarious, completely computer-illiterate thing in Chapter 11. It's just the worst. She also thinks that you buy RAM chips individually and attach them onto the "memory boards" yourself. (No, Ms. Arnston...you can only buy the memory cards with the chips already attached, then you pop the cards onto your MOTHERBOARD.)

The thing is, this throws into doubt all the seemingly-interesting information in this chapter about preparing your work for the press, and the various types of press, and associated formats, because it seems like she doesn't even know how to use a computer. There's seemingly highly-informative information about graphics files and how the computer uses them (though I saw a minor error or two there), but I don't know if I should give the information any merit at all. I don't know if she wrote that part or someone else. In any case, someone else should have written the other computer-centric info, too. But really, publishers need to check teachers backgrounds (and work outside teaching) before they let them loose on a textbook!

If she only likes to work with traditional pen/paper she should at least say so. Of course, it could be that like many professors, she teaches in a field in which she hasn't actually practiced in decades. I can't see how else the "art" parts of the book would be so good and the computer- and website-related information so horrible. It's almost as though she went on a 3-day bender and then stayed up all night with a hangover to finish the book by deadline. I don't even truly know how to rate it, because the visual aspects of design are covered so well. It's like the book was written by Jeckyl and Hyde!

3 out of 5 stars Should be 5 - but new it's too expensive.......2006-03-25

This is a great book, and as a former design educator, I always encouraged my students to look into this book. The basics of the practice are excellently covered. However most students balked at the price. Buy it used if you can. The Web chapter is really dated now.

4 out of 5 stars A great introductory review of graphic design principles.......1999-08-24

This is a great introductory review of basic graphic design principles. The subjects covered include: foreground/background, form, structure, juxtaposition of elements on a page, gestalt perceptual theory, hierarchy, and typography. There is a bit of history, color theory, and computer-related issues. Overall, this is a sound book to recommend to an introductory graphic design class.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Is "H.O.T.".......2007-05-06

Shane Rebenschied's Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Beyond the Basics Hands-On-Training (BTB:HOT) is the second book in a small series on teaching would-be developers how to effectively use Macromedia Flash in their web projects.

BTB:HOT is very well written. The author uses very clear instructions and appropriate graphics(screenshots) to illustrate the points being made. It is a very easy read, especially if you are weary of computer programming style books. The HOT series is written as if the instructor is standing beside you and telling you what you need to do.

This books was definitely written for the layman. This book was not written for someone who is looking to take Flash to the next level of professionalism. The book is very short (almost too short), and really doesn't include very much discussion about the possibilities that can happen with a particular project.

After reading this book and working through the examples, I determined that there really isn't anything new in this book that a seasoned web developer couldn't figure out after reading the first book in the series.

To finish, very good book, but just for novices.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-07-22

This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!

5 out of 5 stars Good tutorial book on Flash.......2006-05-17

This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program.......2006-03-02

Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.

My only complaint, if you can call it that, would be that if you are coming from a programmer's background, you will skim A LOT of pages. You've got to hand it to the author in how he really takes his time introducing programming to the neophytes, but I found myself actually reading only 1 page out of every 3-6.

If you already know how to program in any language, you could probably find the tutorials online to get by without this book, but the expenditure in time probably wouldn't be worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Written by a good teacher.......2006-01-06

Excellent book. The author has obviously taught classes and adopted a style that can be followed by any type of reader/student. If you are a novice you will have no trouble following each step-by-step lesson and learn the topics covered. When you are finished with the book your skill level will have improved.

If your skills are advanced or intermediate you will be able to get through each lesson quickly and learn another way of accomplishing something. The videos on the CD are good and delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.

One of the main goals of the book is to teach the concept of object oriented programming. As you go through the book you build a web site, or, better, an application that loads the different applications you learn about in the book, all tied together by a navigation section.

The use of winks and jokes may seem inappropriate to some, but it kept things light for me and I even laughed a couple of times.

I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to produce Flash applications. You must know the basics of Flash, and you will not learn about tying to databases or using XML or web services. This is why this is the perfect INTERMEDIATE Flash book.

It is very informative and it covers all the basics in 359 pages. The design itself of the book is a pleasure to hold and browse, you almost feel like you just want to carry it around for just in case. It comes with exercises which are helpful mostly if you're a bigginer and it also has a lot of tips and ideas that come hand just about any time. Overall i think this book is great and if you're considering graphic design as a career path this book will surely help you define if you really love design or not.

    5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-08-24

This book really shows you the guidelines of design... not rules but boundaries, emphasizing what most designers lean toward .. and tend to stay away from.
    Great book.

Krause tops himself with this book. It's packed with ideas and technical layout specifics. Also included are a variety of exercises for stretching your creativity. Worth it!

    5 out of 5 stars A must buy........2007-08-12

First I bought The Elements of Graphic Design, apperantly a popular design guide, but it was a visual trainwreck, and was very dull. So I returned it for this book, and have since fallen in love with it. An essential reference, it's authoritative without being constraining or commanding or judging. Refreshing. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Hold on to!.......2007-08-07

This book completely covers the basic design principles and shows in depth the application and usefulness of them. Not only does it do this effectively, but it's exciting to read! Overall the book is very easy to understand and could teach just about anyone how to design better. If you need a guide in design for any field, choose this one!

    Book Description

Complete coverage of basic design principles illustrated by student examples

Design for Communication offers a unique approach to mastering the basic design principles, conceptual problem-solving methods, and critical-thinking skills that distinguish graphic designers from desktop technicians.

This book presents forty-two basic to advanced graphic design and typography assignments collaboratively written by college educators to teach the fundamental processes, concepts, and techniques through hands-on applications. Each assignment is illustrated with actual student solutions, and each includes a process narrative and an educator's critical analysis revealing the reasoning behind the creative strategies employed by each individual student solution.

Assignments are organized from basic to advanced within six sections:
    * The elements and principles of design
    * Typography as image
    * Creative word play
    * Word and image
    * Grid and visual hierarchy
    * Visual advocacy

Design for Communication is a highly visual resource of instruction, information, ideas, and inspiration for students and professionals.

    4 out of 5 stars Advanced "homework".......2007-06-08

I am just starting out in graphic design and this book, though interesting, is very hard for me to grasp at this time. I think I will really enjoy doing the instructionals as I learn more about design though. I tried a few of the exercises and (for me) they are hard to do right now.

5 out of 5 stars This work contributes to graphic design education.......2004-01-22

This review was sent to me by a colleague.

"I am particularly impressed with the strength of the sections and introductory texts for each section. It is very cleverly planned and well written. More importantly, the strength of the book for me lies on the fact that the assignments do not illustrate but on the contrary, strengthens your observations, aims/objectives, methodology, structure and propositions for the design education.

The book is also in excellent record of what goes on in design colleges in terms of methods of working (to record students statements and instructors evaluations is, on its own right, a great contribution to knowledge within the design education). The interaction between students statements and instructors evaluations are very important for me. The two different texts create a dialogue within the book.

The book brings theory and practice together for the students and educators which is very rare in design publication and education and even more so at the BA/ undergraduate level.

Thank you for your great work!"

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Approach to Graphic Design Education.......2003-07-10

Professor Resnick's new text, Graphic Design for Communication offers a fresh, innovative approach to teaching visual communication in general and graphic design in particular. She presents many conceptual design principles in a format that is easy-to-understand, practical, and clear in its organizational hierarchy. The book provides intelligent, pragmatic lessons about design that will be of use to both students and teachers alike.

The book's most notable strength lies in its author's unique approach to the subject matter. In the past, most authors have tackled the task of writing an instructional text on design by focusing on a few basic principles of the craft and supplementing these with exercises designed to impart specific skills and techniques to the reader. In contrast, Resnick has employed a far more inclusive, conceptually focused approach. Like her peers, as an educator she does offer text that presents her perspective on various basic design principles. Yet unlike many others her focus is clearly on the reason we design-namely to effectively express and communicate ideas. And again unlike some other texts, ideas about BOTH form and content are give their due here. The different principles explored each section are illuminated with appropriate exercises. This is where Resnick's book shines as a unique accomplishment. For her illustrative exercises, Resnick invited a remarkable group of international educators to work with her as collaborators. All were invited to submit their best assignments along with student work for inclusion. In this respect, Graphic Design for Communication is unlike most other texts because it offers an inclusive diversity of approaches to design and will certainly be a great tool for educators. As a text for use at all levels of instruction, it offers the best, "road-tested", assignments for lecturers to draw upon as inspiration when explaining the principles of design to students. The numerous exercises impart information in a manner that is at once both practical and conceptually expressive.

Graphic Design for Communication features a structure that is pragmatic and clear. Each section opens with a well-written, articulate introduction to a different design principle (e.g., basic elements of design; typography as both image and semiotic message; word and image relationships; the grid and visual hierarchy; and visual advocacy). This text is followed by a series of design assignments (from basic to advanced) that teach students how to effectively integrate ideas with various techniques and processes. The design exercises are amply illustrated with examples of real student work completed in response to the assignments. In addition, most of the student samples include a brief process statement from the student as well as a critical instructor evaluation. As another reviewer pointed out, students will certainly appreciate the many illustrations (some in color) and the opportunity to examine both the process and critical evaluation of peer work outside the classroom. By using student work for examples (as opposed to those created by master designers), Resnick succeeds in bringing both the assignments and the creative design process to life.

Because of the great range of exercises included, this text will serve both students and educators as a useful handbook. For anyone who has either audited a class or wished they could have, the book is a joy. It is a little like auditing the "best of" graphic design education-all the more rewarding because the author was enlightened enough to collect some assignments and visual examples from cultures outside the U.S.

Professor Resnick deserves special credit for her concise editing and clean layout. I suspect one of the challenges in a compilation of this sort had to be the careful editing of her collaborator's assignments. It would appear that she did not just leave them to their own devices in this regard. Rather, as an educator herself she has thoughtfully and carefully applied her writing skills to the task. The result is a well-considered, consistent survey of the principles that guide modern graphic design. In addition, I must add that her bibliography is outstanding. It should be adopted as a standard reading list for anyone interested in the field.

As with the very best cookbooks (I am thinking of the classics here, such as Rombauer and Becker's Joy of Cooking or Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking) this book will find a place in the libraries of both novices and experienced students of design. Like those texts, it effectively explains the important principles that guide all design work. Her decision to present contemporary master "recipes" (those proven to work in the classroom) introduces students to design as a thoughtful "process" without forfeiting any artistry or pleasure along the way. It is clear that Professor Resnick is passionate about her work as BOTH a designer and educator and in this book she she shares that pleasure with us, the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Design for Communication: Conceptual Graphic Design Basics.......2003-06-17

This new book, like Elizabeth Resnick's earlier one (Graphic Design: A Problem-Solving Approach to Visual Communication), that was published in the early '80s, has a generous amount of student work on its pages, providing the reader with some wonderful and useful examples of solutions to the problems presented. There's even a section with some of these shown in full color!

When Ms. Resnick wrote her first book, no graphic design was being done on a computer. This current text, published now that we're fully into the digital age, also very wisely steers clear of a "how to" approach. It's all too easy for students starting out in graphic design now to think that it's about "how to use QuarkXPress" or some other software package, but Resnick's book stresses concepts, communication, and the art of creating fresh and thoughtful solutions to design problems. It will help students to learn the importance of research, and how to develop the analytical and conceptual skills they will need as professional designers later on.

The idea of using quality student work as a teaching tool is a very good one. It results in a book that is much more appealing to the student. Each solution has a statement by its creator as well as the instructor's feedback. I think students will find the author's approach to the subject fresh, direct, and very accessible. The presentation of each problem consists of: the Assignment Brief, Objectives, Specifications, Process, and Critiques. This results in a very clear, useful, and well-structured text. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a graphic design text with depth.......2003-06-07

There are so many books out there on graphic design that are merely pretty picture books, and focus only on what a piece LOOKS like. What students need is something with depth, something that addresses the conceptual aspects that can be so difficult to grasp.
Resnick's book really targets this need, by presenting an integration of formal and conceptual issues and respecting the students' intelligence in the process. It shows them how FORM influences and strengthens CONCEPT, which I haven't seen in any other text. This is one of the most important (and elusive) issues in graphic design education.

The book is illustrated entirely with student work, all high quality. Students will love this approach; they are used to being shown only the work of experienced professionals.

The book is also going to be really useful for instructors
who want to improve the rigor and depth of their assignments but aren't sure how to go about it.

      2 out of 5 stars Shoddy Editing.......2007-05-26

I've had a generally good experience with the Hands on Training series, but I wish I had read a few reviews before purchasing this one. I'm exactly the type of intermediate user that this title is aimed at, and there is plenty to learn from this book. But it is chock full of proofing errors, mistakes that an intermediate or advanced user can probably suss out and compensate for, but that a relative newcomer to DW or CSS could easily be stumped by. Most unforgiveable is the fact that there are errors in the exercise files - alignment and browser display problems, as well as inclusion of files that have already had the exercise steps performed on them - so that in order to to perform the exercise, you have to start at the end, undo all the steps, then perform them. The exercise files are the main reason to buy books in this series, so problems with those files are inexcusable.

Another shortcoming that intermediate users or below should be aware of: the author does a pretty poor job of giving a context and rationale for many of the procedures used in this book-another issue that makes this book a lot more work than it ought to be.

I'd advise anyone thinking of buying this book to look closely at something in the O'Reilly series - maybe the CSS or Website Cookbooks.

      5 out of 5 stars A Literary Classic!.......2007-05-13

This is a great read if you wish to go to sleep late at night. Okay, I am just kidding, but you know what you are getting into if you are buying this book and it delivers the goods! That's all folks...

2 out of 5 stars Some excellent information, but errors (many of them critical) cannot be overlooked.......2007-01-23

I enjoyed this book thoroughly; I very much appreciated how much information Mr. Lowery tried to cover in a relatively small book. He attempts to bring in more advanced (from a beginner's standpoint) CSS techniques, XML, Ajax, and other topics to the discussion. But, there are many critical errors, both in the book and in the exercise files on the CD-ROM. The errata page for the book does try to make amends for the missing files for Exercise 3, but there are many other exercises that are partially completed or have critical errors which make them render improperly after you are done with the exercise. I am sure that some of the errors are on my part, but the fact there are so many prevalent mistakes and missteps is very disconcerting for someone who is just learning. I went through the first lynda.com Dreamweaver 8 book, and learned a lot. Unfortunately, this book was simply not as well edited.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the basics.......2007-01-09

Detail instructions giving for you to follow.Gives you more than the basics of dreamweaver.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Intermediate nor Advanced.......2006-10-24

This book has so many faults! The CD that comes with the book does not work in many browsers. Sometimes the exercise files on the CD are already completed. They don't work either.

I have asked for help twice. The first time I was told the problems I identified would be added to the errata list. The second time I was told that the author would review the whole chapter and get back to me in two days. That was a week ago. Still no answers as to why things do not work!
