Book Description
Forms, Folds & Sizes is the book that is always next to a designer's computer. Completely practical with only the most needed information, this book will provide designers with all the little details that can make or break a design such as how much space to leave in the gutter when designing barrel folds, how to layout a template for a box and the ratios of each part, metric conversion charts, standard envelope sizes in the USA, Europe, Canada and Asia, etc. This hardworking handbook is 2-color with a durable soft vinyl cover.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference for any Graphic Designer.......2007-09-21
This book has some great resources for any graphic designer, whether you're needing to figure out the right CMYK mixture for a color, or the average envelope size.
Finally! A replacement for the "Pocket Pal".......2007-08-11
A great resource for all the little details you don't find in your design school text books. I've tossed my Pocket Pal and this is next to my copy of Bringhurst now.
for a beginner.........2007-08-04
i'm a big design book junky. i have shelves of them. so once you have all that.. you really don't need this one. it has little tidbits of design how-to's.
The Book Should Be Renamed.......2007-07-20
After reading the mixed reviews from ambiguous raves to detail specific criticisms, I checked out the book myself in a store.
The book isn't awful, but if you have a production department, it's probably better to ask them a question. The book doesn't outline anything that a production artist wouldn't know and that any competent graphic designer should know by heart.
Without any specific mechanicals or keylines, it'll give you an idea or suggestions for package design, but like a typographer doesn't need to get a book that just lists type samples of what they own (you can print samples out yourself with Fontbook or ask a freshman at any university to kidnap one from their Viscom dept.), a package designer should need such basic package design suggestions.
I was hoping for this to be a cheat-sheet kind of book much like the O'Reilly cookbook series might be, but it's the opposite.
An entire chapter devoted to how color prints! Great for a college freshman without access to a prepress class, but entirely asinine for someone who's done press checks. Your better off referencing Pantone's website or ordering yourself one of their color books since it'll be more accurate than a cheaply printed book like this.
It's actually really baffling that any creative person would rather reference an off the rack book that might suffer light or acid deterioration for CMYK swatches rather than Pantone Formula Guide Coated, unCoated, matte.
Yeah, this is a cheap concise reference, but you get what you pay for and this isn't an exception.
The book should be renamed to:
A Cheap Concise Production Reference for Short-cut Takers

Book Description
The Third Edition continues its long tradition as a useful tool in the ever-changing world of packaging design. It features more than fifty new patterns and new material on the latest advances in closures. This hands-on resource gives designers the advantage they need to successfully meet any packaging challenge. Every pattern has been test-constructed to verify dimensional accuracy and is ready to be traced, scanned, or photocopied for immediate use.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book of Patterns.......2007-02-22
The patterns in this book are fantastic - a great book for designers of all types. My only wish is that it came with a CD ROM of the patterns.
Good material, bad presentation.......2007-02-16
The information is a great database for packaging design, but, it comes in a very thin paper. As you use, handle it, you'll feel as if your book is melting in your hands. And you'll miss a CD-ROM with the patterns, in a vetorial format. I have no idea why they didn't provide that.
A monster of a book!.......2007-01-24
"The Packaging Designer's Book of Patterns", currently in this newly revised third edition, is a massive collection of cardboard and corrugated board packaging designs. The book has a small introduction to these materials, highlighting the basic principles behind scoring and die-cutting, plus some information on the common printing processes available for folding carton and some comparison charts between the materials. There is a chapter (mostly in diagram form) about closures and corner locks, which could perhaps benefit from some extra (textual) aids, but it serves its basic purpose. The book chapters are organized by packaging type (Folding Carton, Set-up Paper Boxes, Corrugated Containers and Point-of-Purchase Displays), with various designs of cartons, tubes, trays, multi-packs, point-of-purchase displays, shipping containers, etc. Each design features both the pattern and assembled forms, but there is little or no accessory information to complement them (the author states that this is intentional, not to "stifle the creative process", but as he himself states, many people have asked for this, so why not give the people what they want? Maybe a fourth edition will correct this). There is practically a design for every use imaginable, and you can surely adapt the designs to other purposes as well. Supposedly, these designs are ready to be scanned or photocopied (be aware that some of the designs are patented), but you will probably find this very difficult without damaging the book's spine, as many of the graphics are too close to the inner margin and will most likely suffer distortion if scanned/photocopied. To make matters worse, the paper used for the pages is also incredibly thin for a book of this size and at times, even with mere handling, I am genuinely afraid of making a tear in them. Whether you are a hobbyist looking for functional packaging patterns, a student trying to learn from practical examples or a designer looking for inspiration, this book will most definitely be of use.
Most Complete.......2007-01-04
The Packaging Designer's book of Patterns is the most comprehensive book of packaging patterns available. It is well written with excellent explanations covering all of the main types of packaging, with technical information that every beginning designer should have. I purchased the book as a resource for my Production for Graphic Design class and recommend it as an essential resource to my students and for every graphic designer.
A wonderful design book for beginners.......2006-11-10
I went through a lot of design books. This one is definity a great book for a starter. It has a lot basic designs as well as some interesting design sturctures. Great book to have for the price.

ASIN: 0691123241 |
Book Description
In April 1956, a refitted oil tanker carried fifty-eight shipping containers from Newark to Houston. From that modest beginning, container shipping developed into a huge industry that made the boom in global trade possible. The Box tells the dramatic story of the container's creation, the decade of struggle before it was widely adopted, and the sweeping economic consequences of the sharp fall in transportation costs that containerization brought about.
Published on the fiftieth anniversary of the first container voyage, this is the first comprehensive history of the shipping container. It recounts how the drive and imagination of an iconoclastic entrepreneur, Malcom McLean, turned containerization from an impractical idea into a massive industry that slashed the cost of transporting goods around the world.
But the container didn't just happen. Its adoption required huge sums of money, both from private investors and from ports that aspired to be on the leading edge of a new technology. It required years of high-stakes bargaining with two of the titans of organized labor, Harry Bridges and Teddy Gleason, as well as delicate negotiations on standards that made it possible for almost any container to travel on any truck or train or ship. Ultimately, it took McLean's success in supplying U.S. forces in Vietnam to persuade the world of the container's potential.
Drawing on previously neglected sources, economist Marc Levinson shows how the container transformed economic geography, devastating traditional ports such as New York and London and fueling the growth of previously obscure ones, such as Oakland. By making shipping so cheap that industry could locate factories far from its customers, the container paved the way for Asia to become the world's workshop and brought consumers a previously unimaginable variety of low-cost products from around the globe.
Customer Reviews:
A Box is more than a box........2007-10-18
A good review of the transportation & shipping industry.
A little tedious at times but the points are well made.
I would like to have had a side bar on the boxes used in the
air cargo network to round out the topic.
No where near technical enough.......2007-10-03
Like many jounalists' stories this is set around a particular factor. In this case an entrepeneur who no doubt had a big role to play.
But there were lots of other factors which are not given much play and others bearly alluded to. Also, not even one drawing of a container or its fittings!
So OK as an intro but by no means a comprehensive history.
Global supply chains explained.......2007-08-13
It's hard to dispute that containerization has dramatically altered the rules of the game: global supply chains, logistics, and outsourcing are all direct consequences of the massive trade flows enabled by modern containerships. Marc Levinson's account of this industry is an interesting mix of politics and history. A good section of the book is dedicated to labor disputes, and the general resistance of the dock workers and US unions to mechanization. In retrospect, they were worried for the right reasons, modern ports require very little human involvement and the days of breakbulk shipping are long gone. In all, 'The Box' offers a good mix of the politics, strategy, and historical research.
Interesting Look at the Building Blocks of Globalization.......2007-08-08
Although THE BOX may be somewhat too American centered, economist and business journalist Marc Levinson has written an eminently readable history of the advent of the modern logistics industry that goes a long way toward bringing the attention of a nonspecialist audience to the topic. Despite his belief that his subject has "all the romance of a tin can" (p. 1), his account is anything but dull because he builds much of his narrative around a cast of colorful entrepreneurs, engineers, and union leaders. The most significant character is Malcom P. McLean, who launched modern containerization in April 1956 by having fifty-eight truck trailers loaded onboard a refitted oil tanker that sailed from Newark, New Jersey, to Houston. The main background to Levinson's account, however, consists of the various roadblocks to containerization put in place and enforced by government regulators in agencies such as the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), the United States Maritime Administration, and the Federal Maritime Board. In the author's opinion, the bureaucrats, far from having the consumer's best interest in mind, usually undertook to protect established commercial interests by limiting competition in the transportation industry....
Levinson's treatment of the revolutionary days of container shipping, which lasted until the early 1980s, is very thorough, but his account of the more recent past is much less so. Indeed, people familiar with the industry may get the impression that a final (non-American) chapter is missing from the book. For example, although Levinson describes the rise of container ports in western Europe and East Asia, he devotes only two paragraphs to the fact that European and Asian firms that were late entrants in the game now dominate the industry. No U.S. firm is currently listed in the world's top eighteen container ship companies. Five of these top firms (including the three largest) are headquartered in Europe, three in China (two in mainland China and one in Hong Kong), three in Japan, two in Taiwan, two in South Korea, and the remaining three in Singapore, Chile, and Israel. (See Ted Smith-Peterson, "Railroading's New Economy: The Spigot," TRAINS 66, no. 9 [2006]: 34-41.) In Levinson's opinion, these late entrants achieved success because they "arrived with financial and managerial skills foreign to many of the carriers they replaced, skills appropriate to an industry in which raising capital and managing information systems were far more important than maritime knowledge" and because they were not burdened with "the legacy of government subsidies and directives that had crippled many of their predecessors by forcing them to buy ships built in their home countries or to sail routes determined by regulators" (p. 275). No doubt many readers would like to know more about these developments and about which skills Levinson means.
Levinson also barely alludes to more recent technological advances and to the amazing fact that the rest of the world now handles only one-third as many containers as the Chinese do (for both domestic and international trade). Furthermore, in the words of one industry analyst, China has now become the "U.S. railroads' growth engine" and has been the cause of an American "rail renaissance" (Tom Murray, "Railroading's New Economy: The China Factor," TRAINS 66, no. 8 [2006], p. 28).
Despite such shortcomings, however, THE BOX is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in understanding the emergence of our contemporary "globalized" world economy.
Superb for non-specialists.......2007-05-08
I read this book a few months ago for my nonfiction "foreign policy" book club and we loved it. I continue to rave about it and recommend it to others in diverse fields from national security to development to leadership studies. As generalists unfamiliar with shipping, this book was incredibly readable and engaging. Chapters treated a diverse range of topics, which we found well covered and incisive, such as the discussion of the role of labor unions, business entrepreneurship, and interplay between containerization and globalization. Kudos to Mr. Levinson for a superb effort.

Ehhh. A little disappointing..........2007-02-22
I would totally agree with the above review, Eldridge picks many of the same brands to showcase and perhaps my aesthetic tastes are very specific or my standards are high, but not all of them deserve to be in a book that is supposedly showcasing "good" design. Maybe it's supposed to be displaying a wide range of design taste, but I expected some sort of standard to be selected - for example, there was a plain Ann Taylor carrier bag that they stuck in there (the plain off-white ones - not even the pretty grey ones with the satin handles and pink interiors!), which reinforced my opinions that the book contains more filler and fluff than clever design worthy to be praised.
If you're considering buying this, I suggest you first go to a bookstore and flip through it for yourself.
Must have for inspiration!!.......2006-11-10
I am in love with these rockport books! The 1000 series is an awesome source for inspiration. You can randomly flip through them and something will catch your eye and it starts your creative juices flowing. I would definitely say that these books should be in any design student's library. The 1000 Graphic Elements is the other one that I could not live without!
1000 Bags, Tags & Labels Review.......2006-04-03
This book has a LOT of great ideas and inspirations. I will say that I wish there was more variety amoung contributors. There tends to be a lot of the same designers contributing work. There is also a handful of work that I would not consider to be worthy of "book status".
Overall I do like the book. Another great book by Rockport "1000 Graphic Elements"...

BEWARE of this book.......2004-02-27
I feel I've been suckered into buying this book by the glowing reviews...
The book is large print, anemic content, and lacks any color illustrations or photos.
Not helpful or insightful in any way.
I wish I could get my money back on this one...
GREAT CRASH COURSE IN MARKETING.......2002-12-24
This book is indispensable. I recommend for designers who have not had any consumer behavior or marketing courses, this will help you see a broader vision in packaging design other than making it pretty! I am going to recommend that my supervisor (a marketer) read it, so that we have a good mutual understanding of the purpose in each package we develop. Your design will benefit from having read this book, even though it is written from a marketer's perspective. After all, that also is our job as designers, not to package the product, but to SELL the product!
Excellent Book!.......2002-01-25
This book is full of excellent packaging ideas from intial concepts to focus group research. If you think you know everything about brand marketing , think again. This book is for you.
Great marketing book!.......2000-05-24
One of the best I've read, this is why I want to purchase it now.

Book Description
This thoroughly revised and updated three volume set continues to be the standard reference in the field, providing the latest in microelectronics design methods, modeling tools, simulation techniques, and manufacturing procedures. Unlike reference books that focus only on a few aspects of microelectronics packaging, these outstanding volumes discuss state-of-the-art packages that meet the power, cooling, protection, and interconnection requirements of increasingly dense and fast microcircuitry. Providing an excellent balance of theory and practical applications, this dynamic compilation features step-by-step examples and vital technical data, simplifying each phase of package design and production. In addition, the volumes contain over 2000 references, 900 figures, and 250 tables.
Part I: Technology Drivers covers the driving force of microelectronics packaging - electrical, thermal, and reliability. It introduces the technology developer to aspects of manufacturing that must be considered during product development.
Part II: Semiconductor Packaging discusses the interconnection of the IC chip to the first level of packaging and all first level packages. Electrical test, sealing, and encapsulation technologies are also covered in detail.
Part III: Subsystem Packaging explores board level packaging as well as connectors, cables, and optical packaging.

Customer Reviews:
Nice book to have.......2007-03-06
This book takes a different approach to the packaging development. It has a decent amount of information on the whole process in packaging development from concept to shelf. However, the book does focus more on packaging appearance or graphic. Overall, I believe this is a book that is more suitable for management level rather than for packaging designers or engineers. The book doesn't offer enough details on some subjects that some packaging engineers or designers might be looking for.
If you are interested in knowing the whole process, this is definitely a good book to start up with.
Encylopedia of Packaging.......2006-10-01
This book has it all, the perfect addition to a Package Designers Library. Krasovec and Ms. Klimchuk have thoroughly explained to how a package is developed and also show the thought process of today's package designer. This book has been a long time coming!
The 4-1-1 of Packaging Design.......2006-09-10

A resource asset for both design rookies and professionals, Packaging Design: Successful Product Branding from Concept to Shelf highlights important case studies that provide model roadmaps for achieving retail brand recognition. With a focus on environmental considerations, Ms. Krasovec and Ms. Klimchuk emphasize a critical concern for all product marketers.
