5 out of 5 stars A must read book about the greatest American designers of the 20th Century........2006-01-15

Charles and Ray Eames were not only creative artistic talents, they were also commercial geniuses (just like George Nelson was). These two talents provided the secret for success that would reward them throughout their life. This book gives in debt view about the vast creative inspiration that Charles and Ray Eames had. It documents in detail how Charles and Ray Eames got their early start (working on projects for the army among others) and how they expanded their line with Herman Miller.
The book covers the entire span from 1940 to the 1970's.
And everything is included, from their early plywood chairs, art and films. The stills that the book includes from their films are truly wonderful. This is a wonderful coffee table book, a joy to browse through. If you like modern design I also suggest to visit the wonderful online archive about George Nelson at WWW.GEORGENELSON.ORG and also the museum archive from Verner Panton at WWW.VERNERPANTON.COM

5 out of 5 stars A stunning visual record of a great American design team.......2001-10-21

This is THE book about Charles and Ray Eames. Beautifully printed and designed and with more than 3500 photos to explore the work, year by year, of these two famous designers. The range of work is amazing, furniture (domestic and commercial) films, exhibitions, architecture, books even toys. I have a set of their 1952 House of Cards, a deck of fifty-four playing-card size cards that can be interlocked to create three dimensional structures, a very simple idea beautifully conceived.

If I have a criticism it is that the book does not have an index and that makes refering to it rather frustrating.

I think the book easily reflects the joy and stimulation that Charles and Ray Eames got out of the creative process.

***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

2005 REVIEW NOTE Many of the pages in the book are devoted to the short films Charles and Ray created, you can get thirty-five of these on a wonderful six DVD box set 'The Films of Charles & Ray Eames' (ASIN B0009S2K92) they are available individually but cost a lot more than the box.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Text.......2001-04-14

An exceptionally comprehensive year-by-year summary of the work of the Eames Office from the early 1940s to the late 1970s. Covers everything equally -- from wartime plywood experiments and herman miller furniture to toys, exhibitions, and, of course, films. A must for anyone interested in Eames design. Full of hard-to-find information and photos of rarely seen items.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of Eames Studio.......2000-07-31

This is an excellent survey of the work of the Eames studio. It provides a chronological survey of the furniture, films, exhibits, and other work of the studio. It even provides a listing of the Eames staff at each point and time. Lavishly illustrated, it provides photographs of furniture, exhibits, and stills from the over 100 films produced by the Eames's. Highly recommended as the one book you must have about their work.

Published on the occasion of a major international traveling exhibition organized by the U.S. Library of Congress and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany (holders of the two richest Eames collections in the world), this comprehensive volume is a testament to the Eameses' belief that good design could improve people's lives. From the 1940s to the 1970s, the prolific husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames designed furniture, buildings, exhibitions, and interiors, and made films. They are perhaps best known for the form-fitting chairs that were mass-produced using the same techniques the Eameses developed in their first apartment. Taking a multifaceted approach to their multifaceted careers, this comprehensive, clothbound volume with French folds includes a filmography, making clear the pair's profound influence on the visual vernacular of the 20th century.

Book Description

From the 1940s to the 1970s, the Los Angeles-based husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames practiced design at its most virtuous and its most expansive. Their furniture, toys, buildings, films, graphics, exhibitions, and books all aimed to improve society-not only functionally but also culturally and intellectually. The essays in this handsome and generously illustrated volume examine the Eameses' projects in the contexts of science, corporate patronage, and politics as well as those of modern design, architecture, and art.

An interesting couple who remained highly creative through the span of their careers. I first discovered their work as a child when I saw their brilliant film "Powers of 10". I intend on picking up more books of their work. Great reference for designers and architects.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Design @ it's best!!.......2002-04-13

Words don't do justice to the work & imagination of Ray & Charles Eames! This is a beautiful book covering the creative minds of two of the best modern furniture designers. Filled with great pictures, & very complete text of their design & the many other things they created besides furniture. The Eames' are my biased favorite, if you love modern 50's furniture, fabric, & art you must have this book. They worked for the infamous Herman Miller company, who has reissued many of the Eames furniture pieces available again today. As creator of the modern molded fiberglass chair, & molded plywood, the Museaum Of Modern Art has Charles' chairs as Art, which they are & comfortable too!More than comparable to their Danish counterparts, this couple brought us sleek, smooth lined furniture that will take us into the space age for at least another fifty years!(check out A.I.-incredible backgrounds of modern furniture!)

5 out of 5 stars Everything Eames.......2001-07-06

This is a wonderful addition to any coffee table! I learned so much about this creative couple that I never knew before. The pictures are A+ & very well done. If you are a fan of Eames furniture, you cannot live without this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Founders of a Profession.......2000-08-23

The Eamses were innovators in many fields such as Architecture, furniture design, film, etc. But to my mind their gretest acheivement was the definition of a new profession, 'Graphic Design', or as I beleive they called it, a 'Design Office'.

Up till then, there was 'Commercial Art', and 'Art Departments', and whatever styling was applied to an industrial product was done as an afterthought, and usually by an amateur.

After The Eamses, a new recognition that the design of appearances was a craft and a profession, and not just an art, was born.

This book demonstrates in many ways, how Ray and Charles Eames applied this and many other insights to the various fields of endeavor that they entered and changed forever.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine classic of popular scientific writing. Buy it!.......2007-07-15

`Powers of Ten' by Philip and Phylis Morrison and `The Office of Charles and Ray Eames' is one of those non-fiction classics which everyone gets around to buying or at least browsing in the library before they reach the age of forty. In fact, I'm quite surprised to see that the book was copyrighted in 1982, since it seems as if it has been around for decades, easily going back as far as the 1950's.

Part of this impression may be due to the fact that the concept is so simple. The heart of the book is a series of forty-two (42) photographs, or simulated photographs, each showing a view exactly 1/10th the size of the previous view. One thing that confirms the vintage of the book is that the views near the middle of the series, those from near outer space, are genuine photographs from some NASA platform or other.

One similar book that comes to mind is `Flatland', the `fictional' description of a three-dimensional person visiting a two-dimensional world. A similar work, far more whimsical than these two, is `The Point and the Line'. One advantage the geometrically premised works have on `Powers of Ten' is that their underlying mathematical bases are virtually secure for the ages. Not so with our `Powers of Ten'. Even my layman's knowledge of modern physics can spot at least two out of date aspects in the book. The first I spotted was the statement that the largest share of mass in the universe is in stars. Modern theory posits a mysterious moiety called `dark matter', which now explains a lot of facts about astrophysics which were a mystery under the `all mass in stars' point of view. The second out of date perspective is the absence of any fine detail at the sub-atomic particle level. In the early 1980's, the most advanced physics relied entirely on a particle-based paradigm for sub-atomic structures (The last quantum physics advance cited is the hypothesis of quarks). Since the mid-1980s, the theory of choice is based on strings or even `superstrings'. The conjectural pictures at this level know nothing of vibrating strings. The `big' perspectives also don't really do justice to hypotheses about deep space entities such as black holes and quasars.

Still, this is a great classic. If, for no other reason than it is a great tutorial on getting someone acquainted with the metric system of measuring distances, as all steps are in tenths or tens of a meter. On a more general level, this is a great little lesson in the history of physical science, as the book contains a chronology of the discoveries that pushed our perceptions of the world in one direction (big) or the other (small).

Any family with at least one scientifically curious child should own a copy of this little gem!

5 out of 5 stars Powers of Ten -- a Flipbook.......2002-01-08

Charles and Ray Eames give us a photographic tour of the universe we can hold in our hands. Starting with a picture of the dark emptiness of at the edge of the universe, each page brings us closer to our galaxy, solar system, planet, and down to the one power of ten on which we humans live. But then we continue to dive deeper -- skin deep -- shrinking smaller and smaller through the cells, molecules, and finally sub-atomic space of which we are composed... finding the empty space within the atom to be eerily reminiscent of outer space itself. It's an exciting, thought-provoking five-minute journey you'll want to take again and again.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ride Through The Powers Of Ten........2001-01-23

With a start at 10e+25 meters, from the far end of the universe (~1 billion light years), the book takes 1 power of ten steps downward to the subatomic level, about 10e-16 meters - or smaller than a hydrogen atom. A very good book to get lost in the comparison from one power to the next - be it higher (bigger) or lower (smaller).

5 out of 5 stars From the Macrocosm to the Microcosm---a cosmic adventure.......2005-03-14

From a proton to the deeper reaches of space (at 10 million light years), this little gem has been an inspiration to me since I purchased it a few years ago. It is based on the film of the same name. It simply presents photos of each level with what you are looking at---one picture per page. Hence, the "flipbook" feature.

Going by the mathematical powers of ten (ie 10 to the +23 meters (outer space past our galaxy) to the proton at 10 to the -15 power, the structure of our universe and ourselves is endlessly fascinating to me. It actually solidifies my validation of the truth "as above, so below".

If one ever doubts that there is a Higher Power, just check this amazing visual feast of a book out!

A mind-expanding experience!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Concept & Motivation Book for Teachers & Students.......1999-07-28

This picture book is an excellent pictorial view of the miniscule to the enormous. Very Interesting! Mathematics and science teachers at all levels should have this book in their classrooms. I can't wait to show my Algebra and Mathematics Laboratory students. On the other hand, this book would be interesting for anyone having interest in Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, and Measurement.

If you like Eames, mathematics, outerspace you'll love this flipbook. You flip the pages and zoooom from the milky way through the solar system, into earth and ultimately into an atom in a man's hand.

Beautiful color images.

    Book Description

The work of Diller + Scofidio questions how architecture may contribute to a probing and unresolved engagement with the world by challenging the images of stability and control we conventionally confer upon our buildings. Their new design for The Eyebeam Atelier in New York not only reveals the innards of the museum by making a huge transparent billboard of the people, art and media-technology it contains, it also frames the intrinsically mutable identity of any contemporary cultural institution. In the end their proposition for this new media arts and performance center does much more than simply provide an armature for a new vision of art and technology--it produces vision itself.

5 out of 5 stars Unparalleled on Amazon.......2007-03-26

It's not so much the patterns that make this stationery set great; it's the quality. The paper and the envelopes are of thick, well-manufactured paper and excellent printing/screening. I have been sampling some of the other stationery sets and while they may be prettier or have patterns that are more fun, none have even come close to the quality in this set. I'll keep looking but I doubt I'll find anything better.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best stationery boxed sets!.......2004-09-21

First off, I'd like to say how much I like letter writing and so, I'm a big fan of stationery sets. From boxed sets to fold & mails, I've tried them all and now I'll try to review them all :) This boxed set takes the cake for modern overall great quality as far as I'm concerned.

The Eames textile designs are very modern, colorful and pretty. It's not too feminine or masculine so it's a great tool for anyone. 3 designs in 6 color combinations and envelopes to coordinate perfectly. The quality of the paper is second to none, thick enough stock, and the sheets are perfectly matchable with the sturdy envelopes so your letters will look quite sophisticated and classic.

The quality's very good for the price, esepcially if you consider it all comes in a reusable, decorated box. It's a great gift for anyone in your list or for yourself if you feel like a little something. It'll definitely jump-start and inspire some letters of your own. Very, very recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Bought it as a gift & then bought a set for myself.......2002-12-31

This is a funky set of Eames pattern stationery. I bought this museum gift shop quality set for my brother who had studied industrial design and is familiar with the Eames patterns. When he opened it Christmas morning and we got a closer look at the good size, good quality paper and matching tongued envelopes, I logged on and ordered a set for myself. This is a great set not just for letter writing but for crafts and decor. Although the box appears a little feminine, the patterns are varied and this would make a great gift for anyone, including, er, yourself.

    Book Description

The first book to capture the philosophy and spirit behind the work of Charles and Ray Eames, An Eames Primer offers an in-depth look at the couple's prolific legacy--one that has placed them among the most important American designers of the twentieth century. Those who know one or two aspects of the Eameses' work are often surprised to learn just how far and vast their range extended. Yet throughout their myriad works, from architecture and furniture to exhibition and design and filmmaking, their core philosphy prevails. An Eames Primer is the first book to illuminate this seamless connection.

Author Eames Demetrios explores the rich energy of the Eameses' world from a unique perspective, informed by his close relationship with Charles and Ray. He shares personal anecdotes, previously unpublished photos, and his extensive interviews with former friends and colleagues of the Eameses to make connections between the Eameses' influential philosophy and their widely admired work. For those unacquainted with the designers, the stories behind the design process will inform, entertain, and inspire, while readers with an extensive knowledge of the Eameses' work gain a deeper level of understanding their process.

Compact and highly accessible, An Eames Primer is the definitive introduction to the life of this century's most influential designers.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful history.......2006-02-21

This is a great insight into the lives of the Eames'. I think many designers (myself included) think we know something of their lives and importance. This book is a true eye opener into their influence around the world. There is so much to learn not just from their work, but HOW they lived their lives. Very well written. A must read for any designer.

5 out of 5 stars Connected to the Work.......2005-06-22

As you might imagine and the title implies this is a wonderful introduction to the work of the Eames' design office. More importantly it is a warm fun filled story of two wonderful and creative human beings who truly sought to make a difference in the world by living with integrity. I feel they succeeded and I think that anyone who reads this little gem will begin to see the connections that weave all life's little mysteries into a comprehensive story .

In 1988, filmmaker Eames Demetrios made the film, 901: After 45 Years of Working, a family record of the closing of the Eames Office shortly after the death of Ray. It was an objective attempt to capture the essence of the studio and design work created by Charles and Ray Eames and their multi-talented staff. Now more than ten years later, Demetrios has again recorded the studio and work in the book, An Eames Primer. The modest title implies an introduction and starting point to all the work of his grandparents but it is much more informative. What makes this book essential reading is the personal nature of the writing, connections, and the concept of "design addressing itself to the need."

Much of this personal nature is expressed in the chapter on the life of Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser before their meeting at Cranbrook, including extensive writing on each family history. This early period of their lives is illustrated by several drawings and paintings by Charles and Ray with each piece exhibiting a pleasing combination of color and form that would later become the hallmark of their work.

Demetrios devotes two pages on the issue of the Eameses signing with either Knoll or Herman Miller for the plywood group. This analysis, which isn't really dealt with in other books, is a rational and logical explanation of Charles and Ray's principles and their main concern about simply marketing a "good chair". For anyone interested in this crucial choice the author has formulated an essential case for the decision to go with Herman Miller.

One of the many highlights of the book is a wonderful collection of color photographs of different objects hanging from the ceiling of the Eames House that is pure aesthetic delight. Also, the bottom right corner of each page serves as a flipbook tour of the expansive 901 Studio.

What must have been an amazing event in film exhibition is Glimpses of the USA at the American Pavilion in Moscow in 1959. The seven-screen presentation of life in the United States shows a cultural identity of amazing diversity and Demetrios explains the process behind the production of this film. In an unbelievable set of circumstances, the American government had given Charles and Ray complete freedom to produce this film at the height of the Cold War with no "final cut" approval from Washington. Several pages also describe the production of the two versions of Powers of Ten. These films required experiments in film technology and camera work and Demetrios fully describes the process. The many contributions of staff members and outside consultants are thoroughly explained.

Throughout the book, many former Eames Office members and consultants describe their experience of working in the studio on the amazing variety of projects. Issues of design attribution are commented upon and examined for several projects.

Two days after finishing the book I retrieved Eames Design and several other excellent books and realized that everything now seemed much clearer after reading Primer. Perhaps Demetrios is correct in giving his work that modest title. The clean and clear connection has been analyzed and described so that it all seems so perfectly obvious. This is an informative educational book written in a casual but serious style and a worthy addition to a personal library.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Couple of Designers.......2003-01-20

Charles and Ray Eames' lives are documented by their grandson in this fascinating collection of anecdotes, photographs, and excerpts. If you know only a little about this creative couple - their chairs, perhaps, or the House of Cards - read this book to hear about their work with IBM, the government of India, and the Nobel Prize Committee. They have touched al of our lives in some way, making design accessible to the masses, and this book tells their story very well.
