Book Description

Decorative Style is the most practical and innovative resource of decorating styles, techniques, and tools and materials ever created.

Using innovative, easy-to-master techniques and surprisingly inexpensive materials (paint, paper, fabric, replica molding -- even photocopies!), Kevin McCloud -- a brilliant young set designer turned interior decorator -- shows you everything you need to know to design and create your own stunning adaptations of today's most popular decorating styles.

There are forty styles in all -- from Santa Fe, Shaker, Miami Deco, and Caribbean to Bauhaus, Biedermeier, Mackintosh, and French Country (to name just a few) -- each designed and created especially by the author and stunningly photographed, with literally hundreds of styling options and color variations to choose from.

Each style is represented by a complete floor-to-ceiling "room slice" -- a unique device that allows you to see the total impact of a scheme while easily visualizing its possibilities for your own room. The decorative effects and other components of each style are analyzed, rephotographed with a full range of imaginative alternatives, and cross-referenced to all the techniques, tools, and materials needed to create each unique effect. Even the most inexperienced and budget-conscious of home owners will be inspired by Kevin McCloud's imaginative use of inexpensive, readily available materials and amazing timesaving techniques.

Whether you do the work yourself or hire it out, whether you're redoing an alcove or an entire house, Decorative Style will kindle your imagination and give you all the tools you need to create spectacular, one-of-a-kind interiors that will truly distinguish and enhance the value of your home.

4 out of 5 stars If Your World's a Stage.......2007-10-05

The rooms pictured in this book are very dramatic-- some might suggest over dramatic. But if you'd like some drama in your life look here. A Greco-Roman Bathroom with a claw-footed tub. There's a new plaster bas-relief panel that was given some treatment with shellac and lime. I would probably have pulled out books showing the frescoes of Pompeii and gone with some of their less racy scenes.

His French Empire study for some reason reminded me of one of my favorite Nintendo Entertainment System games-- Castlevania. I think it was the imperial purple walls, candelabra and wall scones with lit candles that brought that game to mind.

You definitely need high ceilings and lots of "stuff" laying around to try to copy any of his rooms, but I think the books works better as inspiration and frankly I enjoy looking at the many items in the rooms-- I have the coffee pot, cream, and sugar bowl that goes with the tea pot on the table in the Baushaus Study. It was made in West Germany after the 50's so it's not actually period.

Anyway, fun book.

3 out of 5 stars Not Useful - Too Theme-y.......2005-11-17

This was a beautifully photographed book. I'm just not sure why I didn't like it very well. Maybe it was because I did not find much that was useful in a room that I decorate in my home.

The book was somewhat helpful in demonstrating some of the techniques used to get the wall treatment, but maybe I am a simpleton and needed more steps. The rooms also did not have a very realistic look. I did like the wall treatment in the tuscany style room but really didn't like the room. The Greek room was also kind of strange looking to me, maybe because the decor was so "fake" looking.

I was just thankful I checked it out of the library first before spending my hard-earned money. "-)

If you like a VERY themed room, you might like this book, but I think I prefer something a little more subtle and classy that does not SCREAM the theme.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not as your only decorating book.......2004-08-19

This is overall a good book that has an excellent section on faux painting techniques and a decent section on various periods of decorative style. The pictures can provide plenty of inspiration if you're going for a certain period of "look" but don't know what elements you need to get there. It also has a good description of artists paints and pigments and where they came from. IE, what exactly is burnt sienna?

I would give this book five stars except that a lot of his decorating techniques seem better suited to a theatre set where everything is built from the ground up and it only has to last a few months. I found a lot of his overall decorating suggestions to be ill-suited to my needs, where I already have quite a bit of furniture, want to integrate what I have into an overall "look", and want what I do to last until I decide to take it down or paint it over. There are other books that meet that need, and they make a good complement to this book.

This would not be the only decorating book I'd buy, but is a good part of a collection. This book is worth it for the descriptions of the elements in each style period and the faux finishes section.

3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book, but not enough detail regarding techniques.......2004-03-22

This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL book. Many styles are explored and techniques discussed, however, there is not enough detail regarding completing the techniques. I had high hopes when I purchased this book, but I think that if I try doing any of these techniques, I'll have to make it up as I go along.

5 out of 5 stars Refer to it over and over again.......2003-02-14

This is one of the only "inspirational" decorative books that I have kept for years. Why? Because in addition in inspriring, it tells me what I need to do it. And it lets me feel that these finishes are within my grasp. Now all I really need is a house with rooms big enough to do much of this!

    Book Description

The avant-garde movements of Central Europe were an integral part of modernism’s evolution as it reached its peak throughout the continent during the 1920s. Written documents--manifestos, artists' statements, and reviews--were the lifeblood of these movements and, during the periods when political events conspired to isolate them, one of their few means of communication and exchange. Much of this crucial evidence has become lost to us, and the artistic avant-gardes of Central Europe have been a blind spot of modernist studies. Until their narratives have been recovered, the story of modernism will remain incomplete. In this book an international team of scholars has selected an essential compendium of documents that take an important step toward regaining this lost perspective.

Between Worlds contains primary documents of the avant-gardes in Austria, the Czech lands, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia from 1910 to 1930. The manifestos and magazines of Western European radical art circles are well known to Western scholars, but few have researched the pages of magazines such as Zenit, Integral, Punct, 75 HP, Tank, and Ma. We know about Italian Futurism but not about Polish Futurism. Few Westerners are aware that French surrealist magazines drew much of their inspiration from Czech publications. The hundreds of documents in the book, almost all of them translated into English for the first time, bring back into circulation landmark texts by the major writers, editors, artists, magazines, and movements of Central Europe. With this publication they are restored to their rightful place in the pantheon of modernism.

Between Worlds is distributed for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Art Therapy.......2006-03-16

Usually these types of books are theoritical (for example why art therapy works) while this one is practical with many activities to work with.

    5 out of 5 stars easily understandible.......2006-03-12

Having found myself a little out of depth as regards people needing release from pain and stress, I have found the practicality of this book invaluable. It has opened my eyes to understand a lot more of the history of art therapy, and the exercises are helpful. I found the pictures included also enable one to grasp some of the concepts within the text and the layout of the book makes it exciting reading.

4 out of 5 stars The Art Therapy Sourcebook.......2005-07-25

I just got done with my first year at college and I got interested in art therapy. I wasn't to sure what exactly it was, and I was recommended this book from my school counselor. It was very informative, and it helped me decide to pursue my study in art therapy.

5 out of 5 stars most innovative and readable art therapy book in print.......2002-04-18

After reading a lot of *same old, same old* art therapy books, I was absolutely thrilled to discover THE ART THERAPY SOURCEBOOK. There are so many art therapy books that are dense and poorly written; Malchiodi is a clear and articulate writer who provides a savvy overview of the field of art therapy in a style that is inviting and exciting. Even if you have never heard of art therapy before, this book will inspire you to want to try your hand at art and will encourage your creative process. As a teacher of art therapy, I require all my first year art therapy and counseling students to read this book and as a therapist, I encourage my clients to read it too. Bravo! I look forward to more books by this author!

    Book Description

Today's world is so flooded with images and information that only the freshest designs get noticed; but dominating trends and carbon-copy successes often trap designers in "been there, done that" mediocrity. In the first portion of this book twenty of the world's leading designers, including Wolfgang Weingart, Stefan Sagmeister, Margo Chase and James Victore reveal the unique and diverse places in which they find inspiration and show how they have incorporated these sources into their work. Whether it be a city, a person, a movie, a promise, a piece of garbage, or simply the act of conversing, inspiration comes in many forms and being able to recognize and harness its power is half the battle.

The back half of this book opens the door to a new way of seeing by delivering an endless stream of imagery and ideas straight to a designers' desktop. Indigenous design, traditional patterns, captivating textures and materials, and common and uncommon sights introduce readers to "found design," where inspiration flows not from successful finished designs, but from textures, colors, patterns, and primitive and offbeat imagery. This creative sourcebook will enable artists to transform their work from common and bland to beautiful and unique.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Creatives.......2002-10-26

Petrula pours herself heart and soul into insipiration=ideas' pages. From its loud purple and orange cover to its innovative page layout and design, inspiration=ideas is stuffed with creative samples-posters, packaging, book jackets, logos, illustrations-inspirational photographs, honest advice, text and quotes. Inspiration=ideas is an essential reference for creative types-designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and writers. Or anyone who has a care to be pushed and inspired.

An intoxicating read, inspiration=ideas is frequently off my shelf and in my hands-right where it belongs.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Creatives.......2002-10-26

I can't stand chain restaurants-TGI Friday's, Bennigan's, Applebee's, Olive Garden-they're all cut from the same tired rug. I bet, however, if I went to one of these establishments with Petrula Vrontikis that I would be overjoyed, eating up every bite of my shrimp fettuccine alfredo or potato skin appetizer.

I had the privilege, actually, of sharing a meal with Petrula-at a small uptown cafe-in Atlanta several weeks ago. She was visiting as a guest speaker at my school, The Portfolio Center, where I study graphic design. During her presentation, she showed her work and talked about her design career. She presented slides of her creative work, including restaurant identity design for Kozo Hasegawa of the Global Dining group in Tokyo. At lunch, she named several books (The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd; Made You Look by Stefan Sagmeister; Flatness is God by Ryan McGinness) that were must-haves for young designers, like me.

Weeks later, my classmates and I still talk about Petrula-and her inspirational book-both in and outside of school. That speaks to the type of woman that Petrula Vrontikis is-present, compassionate, caring, of-the-moment, not afraid. She designs with her whole self, pulling creative influence from unlikely sources-travel photographs, signage, international currency.

The pool of responses to the "ongoing sources of inspiration" question posed to each designer is fun. Take, for example, New York designer James Victore who shares "my heroes have always been cowboys," citing the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson as ongoing sources of inspiration. Or design radical Stefan Sagmeister whose best situation for coming up with an idea is sitting on his roof at 5:30 A.M., sipping espresso, smoking a cigarette.

An intoxicating read, inspiration=ideas is frequently off my shelf and in my hands-right where it belongs.

5 out of 5 stars It Fed My (Designer's) Soul.......2002-07-30

I had hurt my back earlier this summer, and read this book from cover to cover during my recovery. It was SUCH a treat, and there was so much more to it than your average design book.

The layout of the book is beautiful and innovative. Within the structure, the elements in each chapter would change colors or form to reflect the inspiration of the highlighted designer.

I think what is most appealing about this book is that it includes the spiritual and philisophical motivations behind the design process as viewed by these designers. It was a way to get to know some of these talented designers, and to realize that many of the things that motivate and inspire them, also stir my creative juices. It also enlightened me to the fact that everything we do that feeds our soul - whether it be spending time in nature, appreciating a disintigrating billboard, or listening to music we love, is fuel for our creativity.

5 out of 5 stars Imagination comes from things that move youýthis will!-H.R........2002-06-29

No doubt, professionals will enjoy Petrula's book, but as an educator I'd especially recommend it to design students and young designers considering or entering the field. This breathtakingly beautiful volume, chocked with gorgeous images, is so simple and elegant in its structure, you can flip to any page, any name, and be moved, inspired, stimulated, and informed. The first half is like a window into the minds of your favorite designers, giving you a peek at what drives them to create and what is born of that drive. The last half of the book is a salvo of spectacular, superlative found images that will force you to raise your own bar. As the title says, inspiration equals ideas, and there is much inspiration to be gleaned from these pages.

I was a little disappointed by this one. The photos are often not sharp enough to really bring out details. Also, most of the Americal colonial and early 19th c. details pictured are in New York so you get a good look at styles from the region, but not a broad overview. My biggest complaint though is that so much space is devoted to reproduction or historic-inspired details rather than the real thing.

If you're looking for an idea book for adding historic-inspired touches to a home, this is a good choice. As a source for restoration, I think it falls short

Longtime Japan resident Amy Sylvester Katoh and photographer Shin Kimura have created a fascinating and educational masterpiece in Japan: The Art of Living. More than 300 pictures of rooms, furniture, table arrangements, stylish windows, and more enliven its pages as they guide the reader on a "photographic tour of exquisite homes in the Tokyo area, focusing on ... antiques and folk crafts."

Katoh counsels readers to break free from some of the rules that govern Japanese style and design and experiment with their own brand of panache--or Japanache, as Katoh calls it. Instead of simply cataloging stylish homes, the author presents a design element, such as tansu chests, with a dozen options and alternatives, providing both ancient ideas and their modern updates. In addition to the superb photos and engaging text, there is also an index of places to buy the featured antiques, textiles, washi paper, screens, and other items, both in Japan and in 11 states in the U.S. If you were a fan of Japanese design before, this book will make you a fanatic. --Jhana Bach

1 out of 5 stars expecting something different.......2002-12-16

If you are looking for examples of the zen and minimalist aspects of Japanese style, then this is the wrong book for you.

    Pluses:
Some of the pictures are interesting, and I liked many of the cultural aspects of the book.

    Minuses:
Some of the pictures reminded me of the elaborate and glitzy decor of some Westernized Asian restaurants.

    Recommendation:
If you are interested in all aspects of Japanese style, this book might interest you. Everyone else should avoid buying this book.

    5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2001-11-15

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sourcebook for Japanese Interior Design.......2000-12-15

Regardless if you want to have a Japanese Tea Room, a Japanese touch, or just like looking at great photographs of Interior Design, you should buy this book.

I normally don't like books which take elements from one Style, in this case Japanese, and then adapt it for Western use, but here it works very well, thanks to superb and tasteful examples. The authors are also very up-front about it, as the sub-title which does not appear on the cover is "A Sourcebook of Japanese Style for the Western Home".

In hundreds of excellent photographs we are shown in sections with such titles as: "Light and Space", "Traditional Furniture" and "Japanese Textiles" just how easy it is to give rooms and areas of your home a Japanese touch or feel. I personally like the Style very much because it is subdued, almost austere, yet elegant, and makes much use of natural materials. The book is full of really clever examples of what one can do with space, and the best part is, that for the most part it can be done without great expense. The list of sources of where to buy materials at the end of the book is unfortunately out of date. The copy of the book I have was published in 1990, but many sources should be readily available on the Internet.

Along with the excellent book "Japanese Style" by Suzanne Slesin, et.al. (at the time of writing out of print), "Japan: The Art of Living" is all you'll need to go Japanese. And lastly before I forget, the price is right.

    4 out of 5 stars very helpfull.......2000-08-19

As a an architecture student and in an architecture firm working guy I found this book very helpfull. I like japanese architecture and this book has taught me a way to design interiors in japanese-western way.

    Book Description

Ambitious and interdisciplinary, this long-awaited collaboration is a landmark presentation of the writings of contemporary artists. These influential essays, interviews, and critical and theoretical comments provide bold and fertile insights into the construction of visual knowledge. Featuring a wide range of leading and emerging artists since 1945, the collection--while comprehensive and authoritative--offers the reader some eclectic surprises as well.
Included here are texts that have become pivotal documents in contemporary art, along with writings that cover unfamiliar ground. Some are newly translated, others have never before been published. Together they address visual literacy, cultural studies, and the theoretical debates regarding modernism and postmodernism. The full panoply of visual media is represented, from painting and sculpture to environments, installations, performance, conceptual art, video, photography, and virtual reality. Thematic concerns range from figuration and process to popular culture, art and technology, and politics and the media. Contemporary issues of gender, race, class, and sexuality are also addressed.
Kristine Stiles's general introduction is a succinct overview of artists' theories in the evolution of contemporary discourse around art. Introductions to each chapter provide synopses of the cultural contexts in which the texts originated and brief biographies of individual artists. The text is augmented by outstanding photographs, many of artists in their studios, and vivid, contemporary art images.
Reflecting the editors' shared belief that artists' own theories provide unparalleled access to visual knowledge, this book, like its distinguished predecessors, Hershel Chipp's Theories of Modern Art (with Peter Selz and Joshua Taylor) and Joshua Taylor's Nineteenth-Century Theories of Art, will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in contemporary art.
"In New York in 1915 I bought at a hardware store a snow shovel on which I wrote 'in advance of the broken arm.' It was around that time that the word 'readymade' came to mind to designate this form of manifestation."--Marcel Duchamp (1961)
"Women have always collected things and saved and recycled them because leftovers yielded nourishment in new forms. The decorative functional objects women made often spoke in a secret language, bore a covert imagery. When we read these images in needlework, in paintings, in quilts, rugs and scrapbooks, we sometimes find a cry for help, sometimes an allusion to a secret political alignment, sometimes a moving symbol about the relationships between men and women."--Miriam Schapiro and Melissa Meyer (1978)
"I want to create a fusion of art and life, Asia and America, Duchampiana modernism and Levi-Straussian savagism, cool form and hot video, dealing with all of those complex problems, spanning the tribal memory of the Nomadic Asians who crossed over the Bering Strait over 10,000 years ago."--Shigeko Kubota (1976)
"Black for me is a lot more peaceful and gentle than white. White marble may be very beautiful, but you can't read anything on it. I wanted something that would be soft on the eyes, and turn into a mirror if you polished it. The point is to see yourself reflected in the names. Also the mirror image doubles and triples the space."--Maya Lin (1983)
"Artists often depend on the manipulation of symbols to present ideas and associations not always apparent in such symbols. If all such ideas and associations were evident there would be little need for artists to give expression to them. In short, there would be no need to make art."--Andres Serrano (1989)

4 out of 5 stars a super place to start.......2007-08-26

briefly - this is a great basic anthology if you want artist manifestos and excerpts from period art critics. my only complaint about this anthology is that it really doesn't have many of the writings/interivews that are well known from sources like artforum (e.g. smithson's yucatan mirror article) or partisan review (rauschenberg interview). but one can't have all things in one place - that said this is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Packed with History.......2006-08-30

The critics always have alot to say about what the artists have created. Artists are not always as forthright. They can be indirect, weave tales or romance the past. But this book gives you a rare chance to hear it all first hand. The beauty of this book is you drop in with the artist of your choice.

1 out of 5 stars Not much use.......2005-07-25

For a compilation that pretends to deal with contemporary art, this volume is surprisingly outdated, tending to focus on issues in art practice that are at least a decade old. Additionally, it is surprisingly uninformed on a disturbing number of issues. A case in point, two writers, including the editor, mis-read and misunderstand McLuhan, and are even unable to get the basic idea that the medium is the MASSAGE, not the medium is the MESSAGE. If you want a book that informatively and insightfully deals with current issues in art, I suggest you look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Misquoting of latin-american artists raise doubts..........2004-11-17

I've purchased this book while beeing in New York in 2003, and my first impression was that I had aquired an excellent and almost encyclopedical resourse for research. However, when looking for references on familiar contemporary artists like Brazilian Lygia Clark (one of the most important and internationally renowed creators, having teached in Sorbonne, among other things) I've found her name misquoted as "Lydia Clark" while she's reffered as "Argentinian" in the index. The fact that I've found such a mistake concerning a familiar name raises doubts on the rigor of this interesting work.

5 out of 5 stars This is a gold mine.......2000-07-25

I have been searching for a book like this off and on for years, but just recently came accross it. What a great collection of essays and interviews from the artists! I am a teacher/artist myself, not a researcher, and it is so wonderful to have all this information at my finger tips. I hope the editors do more work like this. If you are interested in finding out about what a contemporary artist was thinking, check this book first!

    Book Description

By the end of the eighteenth century a distinctly modern vision of life was emerging. The revolutions in America and France revealed new beliefs about human nature; rights and duties; the natural and material worlds; and a new faith in science, technology and the idea of progress. As people began to change the way they thought about themselves and the world around them, a whole new way of thinking developed, which still has an overwhelming impact two centuries on.

The Enlightenment Reader brings together the work of major Enlightenment thinkers to illustrate the full importance and achievements of this period in history. Extracts are gathered thematically into sections on such aspects of the Enlightenment as political theory, religion and belief, art and nature. In each section, the texts are introduced and a final section on 'Critical Reflections' provides a selection of modern critical opinions on the period.

Containing illustrations from the work of artists such as Hogarth and Chardin,a chronology of the Enlightenment, and a detailed bibliography, The Enlightenment Reader is a rich source information and inspiration for all those studying this great period of change.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be Enlightened..........2004-02-08

While I might quibble a bit with the chronological boundaries set by the editors of this text, it nonetheless incorporates the majority of the Enlightenment period in the selection of writings. The Enlightenment is primarily the post-Renaissance philosophical period around the eighteenth century, where reason and individualism in the various intellectual disciplines surpassed tradition as primary factors. Key figures in the Enlightenment strand of philosophy include Newton, Locke, Leibniz, Voltaire, Hume, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Diderot, Pope, Gibbon, Adam Smith, Bentham and Kant. Various artistic, literary, philosophical, and political movements that began in the Enlightenment are still primary factors in the world today. For example, the economic and political frameworks of the American Revolution and the French Revolution came out of this movement. Scientific and mathematical principles established during this period still remain powerful methodological tools in current practice.

Editors Paul Hyland, Olga Gomez and Francesca Greensides each bring a background of liberal arts, history and cultural studies to bear the task of developing this superb collection of readings and essays on the Enlightenment. The texts themselves come from as original of sources as were available -- the editors did not try to 'clean up' the language or standardise too much, but did do editorial changes to reduce awkwardness in punctuation, capitalisation and such. Most of these selections come from authoritative eighteenth century editions or translations.

Each section of sources is tied to a particular subject or theme; each section is introduced by a brief essay discussing the importance of the subject or theme to the overall context of the Enlightenment. For example, the very first subject section is on Human Nature -- given the importance of the rise of individualism as a key concept regarding human nature for the Enlightenment mindset, this is a good place to start. Alexander Pope is quoted as an Enlightenment champion for saying 'the proper study of mankind is man', in other words, the movement was away from theological ideas concerned more with a distance and unchanging/immutable God and more toward the human condition.

There are thirteen sections of sources, which include the following topics: Human nature; the search for knowledge; religion and belief; the natural world; science and invention; political rights and responsibilities; civil society; moral principles; gender and society; art, architecture and nature; Europeans and the wider world; radicalism and revolution; and a few autobiographical pieces (Rousseau, Franklin, and Madame de Roland). Within each of these sections are a selection of sources from the major writers, artists and other figures of the period, sources that had the greatest impact -- for example, under the topic of political rights and responsibilities is included passages from Locke and Montesquieu, as well as sources from political leaders Catherine II and Frederick II. Each author is introduced with a brief biographical sketch and contextual information; occasionally the editors insert more material to put the source selection in proper perspective.

The second part of the book (actually only one-tenth of the page number of the book) is a reader of various essays from modern writers such as Jurgen Habermas, Peter Gay, Jean-Francois Lyotard and Michel Foucault on different aspects of the Enlightenment, looking at it both as a piece of history and as a continuing force to be dealt with in modern times. The third part is a brief chronology, highlighting key events, publications, artistic accomplishments, political situations and more. Primary sources for further study are highlighted in this chronological listing.

The further readings listings are extensive and well organised according to general works, primary and secondary sources, national contexts, works from particular writers, and finally the chapter topics. The index is extremely well done and useful, an important piece in a large academic text such as this.

No sourcebook on a period such as the Enlightenment can ever be complete. I have several shelves of books from writers from this period of history; of course this could not be incorporated in a single volume. However, what the editors have done is a splendid job of selecting the most interesting, most insightful, most influential pieces from this period, and set the stage for a broad understanding of the Enlightenment, as well as (hopefully) stimulus for further research.

5 out of 5 stars THE Grammar has Remained an Influential Source .......2006-09-10

Englishman Owen Jones first published his monument to design, the Grammar of Ornament, in 1856. It was originally published in installments for subscribers. Jones's illustrated plates and design motifs drew from nineteen different cultures including the ornament of Oceania, Rome, Byzantium, ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Moorish Spain.

The Grammar was adapted to architectural decoration, fabrics, textiles, tile design, furniture and wallpaper during the second half of the nineteenth century. It has remained influential among designers worldwide.

The quirky colorways are decidedly of another era and worthy of study. I have effectively used them to thwack my creativity out of occasional dead ends or potholes. This is a respected, classic reference. It is deserving of space in every designer's reference library.
