"Building Type Basics for Recreational Facilities" .......2005-06-09
"Building Type Basics for Recreational Facilities" is an essential guide for anyone contemplating the design and construction of recreation facilities, be they owner, developer or architect. Although, as stated in Stephen Kliment's excellent preface, it is "not a coffee table book", it does have a section containing 26 color plates of some of the more interesting projects.
It is a utilitarian book --- an architect's contemporary "Graphic Standards" for recreation facilities. It makes easier the programming and planning of every conceivable type of recreation project, plus some this reviewer had never heard of! The majority of projects are complete with sketches, floor plans and photographs. There are numerous charts and design standards. Every area of concern is covered from basic programming through design, engineering systems, interiors, operation and maintenance to costing/financing and sustainability issues.
"Building Type Basics for Recreational Facilities" is a well designed book, with text that spells out clearly and simply guidelines for the design of a myriad of recreational project types ---a vital tool for the experienced and as well first time owner, developer and architect.

Book Description
"This book will save you money and grief before you can say woven roving."--Sailing
"A comprehensive and accurate work that should benefit almost any owner of a fiberglass boat."--SAIL
"This book will prove a valuable addition to the library of any boat builder or owner who is seriously interested in doing his own repairs, as well as intercepting minor problems before they become major projects."--Boatbuilder
Are there hairline cracks in your boat's deck or topsides gelcoat? Have her color and luster faded over the years? Does she have deck leaks? Has she been holed? Is her hull oilcanning in a sea? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, this book is for you. This is the definitive guide for fiberglass boat repair and beautification, covering not just cosmetic dings and scratches, but also major repairs of structural damage to hull and decks. It will show you how to:
- replace deteriorated gelcoat, or repair the flaws in an existing gelcoat and recoat it with polyurethane or marine alkyd enamel paint;
- strengthen a weak and overly flexible hull or deck;
- tab in loose hull liners and joinerwork;
- make templates from the good side of a hull to reshape large shattered or missing areas on the other side;
- repair or replace water-saturated deck cores;
- repair keels, rudders, and centerboards;
- rebed and refasten underwater and on-deck hardware;
- rebed, refasten, and strengthen hull-to-deck joints;
- fix broken hatches, and make new ones when necessary;
- treat the symptoms and causes of overstressed hulls.
That beautiful craft swinging at anchor or nestled dockside, her topsides reflecting water and sky like a polished mirror, could be yours. Here's how.

This is a very old book as far as fiberglass boats go.Must later prcedures,and products not included. There is some usefull info in the book
I think there are better books out there . . ........2001-02-05
This is a good book. It is complete, to be sure. For the expert fiberglass repair person, I cannot speak, but it is certainly difficult to read for an amateur. Generally, a bit much to swallow. I think that other books have similar information more elegantly stated. The fault is not with the content, but the presentation.
Also Valuable When Buying A Used Boat!.......2000-02-06
Of the many boatbuilding and repair manuals I have seen, I would consider this to be the best reference for fiberglass boat repair. The pictures on the dust-jacket alone indicate that a serious treatise is contained within. It would appear that no matter how bad it looks, there is no problem beyond the scope of the competent fiberglass repairman. (Caution - some of the color photos of repairs-in-progress between pages 118 and 119 are not for the faint-hearted!)
Mr. Vaitses has been at this for a long time and with experience in the world of wooden boats (all boats have wood in them somewhere) as well as having been a player in the fiberglass revolution, is able to offer a well-rounded perspective. His honest, no-nonsense approach to problem-solving is refreshing.
Besides the obvious background info and how-to descriptions, this book can be an invaluable asset when examining a used boat. Mr. Vaitses is currently working as a marine surveyor (a person who inspects and evaluates the condition of boats for prospective buyers). All used boats need some kind of work and the challenge then becomes evaluating the nature and scope of needed repairs, e.g. distinguishing structural and safety issues from cosmetics and determining whether one can affect the repairs oneself vs. how much it will cost to have someone else do it.
Studying this book allows one to communicate more effectively with the surveyor and to describe problems more accurately to repair facilities in order to estimate projected costs. We recently completed the evaluation and purchase of a 1974 36-foot fiberglass cruiser. I can honestly say that the knowledge and confidence I gained from this book made the entire process a good bit less nerve-racking than it might have been!

Book Description
This is the story of a man with a dream—as well as the vision and passion to make it come true. The dream was to build a great American links course, one that would contain all the excitement of the famous golfing destinations in Scotland and Ireland, storied places like St. Andrews and Ballybunion. The man was Mike Keiser, an entrepreneur and amateur golf enthusiast, founder of the successful company Recycled Paper Greetings, and Dream Golf is the story of how, with the help of some of the most colorful—and occasionally controversial—men in golf, he transformed a remote area on Oregon's Pacific coast into not one, but three of the most stunning, challenging, and highly ranked courses in the world.
It began modestly, when Mike Keiser decided to build a nine-hole "dunes" course and golf club on the shore of Lake Michigan, near his home in Chicago. The experience prompted him to look further, with the goal of realizing a dream that he had harbored for some time: to bring to American golfers the same kind of experience he had enjoyed while playing some of the legendary courses of the British Isles, "links" courses that had evolved naturally to fit the rugged, heaving coastal terrain. These ancient courses were the antithesis of most modern American courses, where the features were shaped by bulldozers and all too often look sleek, manicured, and artificial.
No, Bandon Dunes would be a "pure" golf experience, pitting the golfer against the elements, allowing the land to dictate the course, banning the use of carts, making the golfer feel at one with both nature and the game. To achieve that goal would take a great amount of planning and hard work, the struggle of man against nature in shaping the land into three courses that would become the Bandon Dunes complex. Conventional wisdom said it was impossible. And even if he built it, would anyone come to this remote Oregon outpost?
Dream Golf is the first complete account of how drive and determination, coupled with the best minds in the game, created a utopian golf experience in a place of breathtaking natural beauty. It is the gripping and compelling account of how one man followed his dream to its greatest conclusion.

We purchased this book for our son for Christmas, and it was a big hit!! He's already finished it and is loaning it out to friends and family. It's a wonderful book for any golfer with a love of the game, whether he/she has been to Bandon Dunes already or is perhaps dreaming of the day....
Great book on golf.......2007-01-03
First let me say that I haven't read this book. I bought it for my husband who never reads books. Never. I gave it to him when we went on vacation so he'd have something to read while laying in the sun. He read every day until he finished it. He kept regaling me with interesting facts and bits of information from the book, and he has recommended it to several friends.

Book Description
This is one of the best-selling technical books in its field. For years, engineers, engine designers, high-performance tuners and racers have depended on this book to help maximize their engines' potential. Dr. John C. Morrison is one of the foremost authorities on the analysis of the induction and exhaust processes of high-speed engines. Together with Philip Smith, he gives a thorough explanation of the physics that govern the behavior of gases as they pass through an engine, and the theories and practical research methods used in designing more efficient induction manifolds and exhaust systems, for both competition and street use. An outstanding, authoritative book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-04-05
This book is an excellent read, but keep in mind it was written by mechanical engineers, I am a an electrical engineer and never got heavy into fluid flows so this book did me great justice. Someone mentioned that it does not mention forced induction in the text. With forced induction you are not particularly concerned about intake side, for exhaust side all you have to do is adjust the pressures to how ever many bar you are running, or as this book writes it into lbs/in squared, these equations are based off of perfect afr so figuring out the exhaust output pressure is not all that tough.
All in all I gave this a book a 4 because it is exactly what it says it is, but supplemental reading on fluid flows is a really good idea, if not a must... this book is more of highlights the fluids theories in intake and exhaust systems for you.
Excellent book.......2004-02-26
The information in this book is just as relavant now as it was when it was written back in 1972. Physics is physics, after all. The book gave me a much clearer understanding of header theory. My only complaint is that Smith and Morrison obviously wrote this book for engineers, and I'm not one. I had to struggle to understand some of the concepts, particularly on tri-y header design; but in the end, it was definitely worth it. The exhaust concepts are equally applicable to carbs and fuel injection. The only things lacking were crossovers and merge collectors, but I guess those things weren't invented in 1972. This book will give you a basic grounding in header design theory, and will enable you to discern a set of well-designed headers from a useless tangle of pipes. If you plan on building a set of custom headers, this book is definitely required reading.
In desperate need of updating!.......2003-07-27
Very outdated. I regret not having read the reviews here prior to purchasing this book. The last time this book was updated was 1972! There is nothing in the way of forced induction. Turbochargers are not mentioned and there is a single reference to superchargers on page 17! "Fuel Injector" is mentioned once. I am definitely sending this one back. Not the first time I have been disappointed with Bentley Publishing. FYI, 1972 was the year Pong came out. As I said, the book desperately needs to be updated.
highly recommended if you..........2000-05-09
I have designed race cars for years and I definitely recommend this book. I found information in this book that I have not seen published anywhere else. It explains how tri-y headers work. It explains the theory behind pulse tuning of exhaust and intakes. The intake pulse tuning is the basis of why Porsche created intake manifolds that effectively change between several intake runner lengths. These theories are even backed up by proven test results performed by engineers. There are even simple equations that are directly applicable to designing an intake or exhaust. This book is "old" but then so is the 4-stroke engine and although today's engines may seem "new" they are fundamentally the same as the "old" ones which makes the material in this book very worthwhile. If you want to know more than what intake or exhaust you should *buy* and are possibly thinking about creating your own intake or exhaust system, definitely buy this book. If you are looking for a book like this but even more technical, I suggest the 2 volumes titled "The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice" by Charles Fayette Taylor.
Stuck in the '60's.......1999-11-23
I read the book cover to cover. My impression is that this book contains exhaust and intake design information that was current in the 50's and '60s. Very little information for modern 4 or 5 valve per cylinder engines, and fuel injection tuned intake systems. No information on practical design of V8 performance exhaust system for street emmissions legal exhaust. Needs updated.

My use of Nigel's book.......2007-07-16

Top Flight Calder.......2004-12-24
The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand. Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman. Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it.
A Cruiser's Engine Atlas.......2004-12-18
This book provides the reader with a broad overview of most of the basic problems that can occur and offers simple solutions. I have recommended/loaned my copy of this book to several Diesel sailboat owners. The all remarked on how simple their repair was according to the book and how it save them $$.
I do find the book is a little lacking in coverage of large powerboat diesels, but the concepts seem applicable.
Know Your Diesel.......2004-05-11
My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat.
Don't Leave The Dock Without it.......2003-09-06
With this book aboard plus Peter Compton's "Marine Diesel Engines" and your engine manual you can cruise with an easy mind. The first two books explain all aspects of diesel function as well as define any problem you may have, with diagrams, explanations, and tips to cope. Calder also has photographs. The engine manual shows you how this relates to your particular engine.

Customer Reviews:
The Encyclopedia of Yacht Designers.......2006-07-03
A Truly magnificent book, all the photos and drawings a boat enthusiast could ever want. I nice broad range of vessel types covered from racing multihulls to powerboats to keel boats and gaff rigged schooners.
Excellent Coffee-Table Book.......2005-12-09
This book is very impressive and the years of extensive work to create and publish this book is amazing! A great conversation piece on a coffee-table. Anyone who enjoys yachts would enjoy this book, whether you have an interest in yacht designing or not. Or maybe I'm just a little partial, as my Dad, William H. Shaw, is one of the yacht designers written about in this book and I'm very proud of him.
An instant classic.......2005-11-21
An instant classic. This is an indispensable resource that has been too long in coming. The research is amazingly put together and the depth of entries is impressive. I was particularly interested in the research on Walter Pinaud and the yachting activity around Cape Breton at the turn of the century. Also, of less importance than the material in the book but still notable is the appearance of the book. It is a very attractive volume and the price on Amazon can't be beat.
Classic maritime reference work.......2005-10-26
Long awaited, this magisterial reference work by Lucia Knight and Dan McNaughten about the world's yacht designers will rapidly become a must have book for anyone with an interest in boats, sailing, yacht racing and racing rules, the evolution of yacht design, and many other facets of the maritime world. It's stunning, authoritative and comprehensive.
The Untimate Yachting Book.......2005-10-20
This monumental book, ten years in the writing covers virtually every yacht designer of the century. The length of the entry for each designe is based somewhat on their prominence or the prominence of their designs. The designs come from about the turn of the century (I really like some of the steam powered racing yachts.) to quite modern designs. The size of the yachts vary from small under twenty foot (7' is the smallest I see)) personal boats to the yachts of kings that may be 400 feet plus.
The statistics of the book are amazing in their own rights:
Ten years
87 of the world's finest yachting writers
525 of the world's best yacht designers
650 drawings and photos of represntative boats.
In on book, here is a history, a technical reference manual, a commentary, a picture book, a reference on the designers. In short, here's an encyclopedia.

The Nature of Boats: Insights and Esoterica for the Nautically Obsessed
ASIN: 0070231591 |
Book Description
"This work is significant. It is the first to include a method of assessing structural strength in the context of the modern marine environment." --Commander M. C. Cruder, U.S. Coast Guard
Acclaimed author and naval architect Dave Gerr created this unique system of easy-to-use scantling rules and rules-of-thumb for calculating the necessary dimensions, or scantlings, of hulls, decks, and other boat parts, whether built of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, steel, or aluminum. In addition to the rules themselves, The Elements of Boat Strength offers their context: an in-depth, plain-English discussion of boatbuilding materials, methods, and practices that will guide you through all aspects of boat construction.
Now you can avoid wading through dense technical engineering manuals or tackling advanced mathematics. The Elements of Boat Strength has all the formulas, tables, illustrations, and charts you need to judge how heavy each piece of your boat should be in order to last and be safe. With this book, an inexpensive scientific calculator, and a pad of paper, you'll be able to design and specify all the components necessary to build a sound, long-lasting, rugged vessel.
What reviewers have said about Dave Gerr's books:
Propeller Handbook
"By far the best book available on the subject."--Sailing
"The best layman's guide we've ever read."--Practical Sailor
Dave Gerr and International Marine made a complicated topic understandable and put it into a handbook that is easy to use."--WoodenBoat
"Without doubt the definitive reference for selecting, installing, and understanding boat propellers."--Royal Navy Sailing Association Journal
The Nature of Boats
"If you are not nautically obsessed before reading this book, you will most certainly be afterward."--Sailing
Fascinating potpourri of information about today's boats, modern and traditional."--WoodenBoat
Customer Reviews:
Read every word!.......2007-10-11
Great book! This book was just what I needed, while making boat repairs and contemplating my next purchase (or perhaps build).
With an undergraduate degree in Ocean Engineering with a couple of naval architecture courses under my belt, I really needed a professional's common sense, savvy discussion of boat design. With each page read I visualized the different construction details seen at boat shows and on friend's boats, I can trace failures observed back to the discussions.
The author's writing style really livens up the reading! I have read many books on the subject, this and "The Nature of Boats" are my favorites to date.
My only criticism is that the scantlings were noted to be appropriate for speeds up to 45 knots, I would have liked to book to include higher speed designs as that is my current interest, still looking.... Otherwise, five stars!
Already applied it.......2007-03-12
As an amateur boat builder, it helped me a lot to understand the subject. After finishing this book, now it is much easier for me to understand the class rules. It already paid back, since it made me realize a mistake on the number and thickness of the scantlings on my friend's boat.
Not bad.......2007-01-05
Gerr starts this book with the calculation of a "scantling number." This number is essentially based off the length, width and height of the vessel. He then applies this number to several charts thoughout the book to give "rule of thumb" values on the proper dimensions of the scantlings (hull plating, stiffeners, beams, etc.) for the vessel in question. Overall this book should be useful to the home boat builder. The math in the book is simple and the values obtained from the book seem reasonable for most boats. The books main weakness is that it glosses over the engineering aspects (calculating stresses, etc.).
if I can read.......2006-03-02
My Englisjh is terrible, so if I can read this book (and I do), this is a good and simple book.
Thank you

Its a good book but I can imagine some difficulties to people not affine with this subject.
I have no problem as a Naval Architect.

Book Description
This step-by-step guide to building a lashed-frame, fabriccovered sea kayak is both a means to a sleek, fast, universally admired boat and an excellent introduction to woodworking and boatbuilding for hobbyists. The Inuit design scales up or down to fit the paddler and can be built using $150 worth of hardware-store materials, a few basic tools, and a minimal investment of time. Also included: plans for a low-volume version designed for Eskimo rolling; an especially stable version for children; and discussions of kayaking equipment, paddling, and rolling techniques.

Building your own kayak.......2007-02-24
My daughter and I are building kayaks in an Adult Ed class using this book as our bible. Luckily, there is an instructor who has built 2 kayaks before using this book. The book contains all you need to know, albiet that you have to spend time reading the words repeatedly because there aren't enough sketches to show what is intended. There are lots of photos, but they don't convey the same amount of info as a sketch with dimensions. But, if you keep re-reading the book to figure our how to make the jigs, you'll end up with a piece of art, that you can kayak in.
All You need.......2006-10-19
If you want to build a greenland kayak then this is all you need. Instructions are clear and not wordy. It also has sections on making paddles and paddling clothing. The style shown in this book has slight deviations from the original greenland technique but he specifically states all the changes. I built a kayak from this book with my only help being a second pair of hands, and i am only 15. The boat was exactly to his designs and it is fast, fairly stable, and responsive.
Terrific book with lots of details and pictures.......2006-08-01
This is a terrific book. I bought Robert Morris' book on Skin on Frame building and had many questions. Chris Cunningham's book provides lot of details and answered my questions. Both books compliment each other and since I do not know much about this process, I consider both required reading before I build.
I like how this book provides all details on what type of lashing to get, the Eskimo knot, fabric and type of material for sewing seams. It focuses on 1 type of boat only, which allows the author to provide lots of details and pictures during the build. I probably will not use the 2 part polyurethane finish as it shown in the book. I think I would rather use the water based exterior polyurethane as shown in the Morris book. If you plan on building a skin on frame, you have to get this book. Even if you don't plan to build one, it is a great book for those interested in this process.
Great detail and instruction.......2006-04-19
This book was great for a novice builder like myself. The intructions were clear and easy to follow. I like the way the instruction passages started with the result intended followed by detailed instructions.
The jigs were especially helpfull in achieving the results intended.
Easy-to-follow building instructions accompanied by hundreds of photos
Complete lists of all the tools and materials you'll need
Detailed primers in lumber milling, fastening, rib bending, and measuring
Additional instructions for making a Greenland paddle, paddling clothing, float bags, skegs, and more
Pointers on paddling skills, kayak rolling, and children's kayaks
Another view of skin-on-frame building........2005-08-26
Cunningham provides a very detailed view of the building techniques he uses, complete with jigs and adaptations that work for him. He includes chapters on clothing, equipment, rolling and variations, which you may find useful. This book is a useful addition to Morris' "Building Skin-on-Frame Boats" for its practical tips and a different view of the process. A good value and worthwhile addition to the boatbuilding library.

Book Description
By unanimous agreement, this is simply the best work on the subject - the definitive book. Mr. Garrison, a mechanical engineer by training, built perhaps the finest rods ever - and describes how it's done. He died before the book was first published (in 1977) though his protégé, Hoagy B. Carmichael, completed it and brought it to publication. Essential reading for all who admire fine bamboo rods. A useful section is included on restoration, refinishing and repair as well. Customer Reviews:
Bible of bamboo rod building.......1998-12-20
Garrison's book is one of the seminal references for anyone who endevours to build bamboo fly rods. It's also a great read for anyone who enjoys cane rods. Though I may never have the chance to cast a Garrison, I've gained a much greater appreciation of the care and craftsmanship that he invested in each of his rods.
Plus, it's a nice green color and looks impressive on a bookshelf.

Book Description
One of the greatest surfers of all time, Greg Noll has built a considerable reputation as master of surfboard making, or "shaping." Today, collectors and surfers alike prize his unique brand of board. Recently featured in the award-winning documentary feature, Riding Giants, "Da Bull," in his iconic black-and-white striped trunks, was emblematic of big surf and fearless commitment. In addition to being a pioneer of big-wave surfing, surf movies, and surf magazines, by the mid-1960s, Noll was one of the largest surfboard manufacturers in the world.

DREW KAMPION'S LATEST BOOK PROJECT IS A TOP DRAWER AFFAIR.
HAVING BEEN EDITOR AT BOTH 'SURFER MAGAZINE' AND 'SURFING MAGAZINE',DREW IS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL QUALIFIED TO DELVE INTO EXPLORATIONS OF THE SPORTS HISTORIC PASSAGES. THE ART OF THE SURFBOARD' DOCUMENTING GREG NOLL'S LIFE AND TIMES IS NO EXCEPTION. GREG NOLL AND THE SURFBOARDS THAT HE HAS LEFT IN HIS WAKE ARE INDEED LEGENDARY.
THE BOOK IS PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED; FOR MANY THIS ALONE IS ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY PURCHASING THE BOOK..... BUT FACTOR IN A CONFLUENCE OF KAMPION'S NEAR PERFECT HISTORICAL ACCURACY WITH GREG'S 20/20 CANDID HINDSIGHTS AND THIS RETROSPECTIVE HAS ALL THE MAKINGS OF A BOOK TO BE REFERENCED FOR DECADES TO COME.
IF YOU SHARE A PASSION FOR POST MODERN SURFING AND THE ATTENDING MYSTIQUE THAT SURROUNDS IT, DON'T MISS THIS BOOK

The story behind the wave craft..........2007-06-18
An infinitely deep look at THE quintessential legend of surfing, "Greg Noll: The Art of the Surfboard" is an honest, "no rock left unturned" retrospective of surfboard shaper/surfer/waterman Greg Noll. Leaf through the pages of this book and you're instantly captivated by a virtual kaleidescope of Noll's meticulously handcrafted, functional works of art, coupled with a treasure trove of stories well worth telling.
Kampion, a "literary savant of surfing's cultural record", has chronicled just about every aspect of the sport of kings, making him a natural choice to weave this tale. Here he takes on the insurmountable task of capturing Noll's endless contributions to surfcraft with his characteristic thirst for all things water-related.
The sheer amount of research that went into this book is unimaginable, and yet somehow reading it feels like you're simply talking story, Hawaiian style.
The best part about this book is that it's not just a historical register: Kampion also turns his lens at Noll's son Jed, and we get a glimpse of how Greg's skills with a sander and Surform are being passed down to another generation of board builders.
With every turn, "The Art of the Surfboard" is pure aloha. And no filler.
lush publication indeed!.......2007-05-31
An ambitious project, a captivating and thoroughly enjoyable read. 'Greg Noll, The Art of Surfboard' has assumed it's rightful place in my home, right smack in the middle of my coffee table!
An essential part of any self respecting surfers library, even non surfers love this book......lush publication indeed!
I really appreciated the way in which Kampion so astutely and interestingly captured Noll's stunning legacy whilst revealing so many vital aspects of our surfing heritage.
Incredible research....simply awesome product!

Two Characters.......2007-05-26
Surfing is a pastime/activity/obsession/lifestyle (I can't bring myself to call it a... sport) unique in its history and characters (think renegades), and Noll is a unique character/renegade/lunatic even amongst that lot. Kampion, aside from being a character/renegade/lunatic his own self, is simply THE historian/chronicler/storyteller of the pastime/activity/obsession/lifestyle.
To put it another way: If you're over 40 and surf this book is mandatory.
If you're under 40 and surf: "mandatory" means you should read it.
